kẕuttu (p. 98) s. The neck of a person, brute, thing, &c., கண்டம். கழுத்தடி, s. The lower part of the nape of the neck, தோண்மேல். கழுத்தறுக்க, inf. To cut the throat, to server the wind-pipe. முன்விட்டுப்பின்னின்றுகழுத்தறுக்கலாமோ...... Would you bid one take precedence and then cut his throat? ஒருவன்கழுத்திலேகட்டிவிட. To devolve unpleasant consequences on another. 2. To attribute a crime or blame to a person. 3. To impose on another unsaleable goods, or a woman ineligible for marriage. கழுத்திடுகயிறு, s. Halter for a beast. கழுத்திருத்த, inf. To have the neck pressed down with a heavy load. (c.) கழுத்திலேகயிறுபோட, inf. To threaten self-immolation for the purpose of recovering debts, &c. 2. To be very treacherous, insidious, perfidious. (c.). கழுத்துக்குட்டை, s. A neckcloth, a cravat. (c.) கழுத்துக்கொடுக்க, inf. To lay down the neck for another on the block, to subject one's self to inconvenience or danger. 2. To expose one's life by a commission of crime. 3. To submit to the yoke as bullocks. கழுத்துச்சந்து, s. The joint of the neck. கழுத்துச்சுளுக்கு, s. Straining of the ligaments of the neck by violent turning of the head. கழுத்துத்திருக, inf. To wring off the head of a fowl, &c. 2. To throttle, twist the head. கழுத்துநெடியபானை, s. A longnecked pot. கழுத்துப்பட்டிகை, s. A collar, a cape. கழுத்துப்பட்டை, s. The collar of a cloak. கழுத்துப்பருத்திருக்க, inf. To have a thick neck. கழுத்துப்பொருத்தம், s. One of the ten பொருத்தம் for marriage, மணப்பொருத்தம் பத்திலோன்று. (c.) கழுத்துமுறிக்க--கழுத்தைமுறிக்க, inf. To break the neck--spoken of the power, &c., of demons. வேண்டாமென்றுகழுத்தைமுறிக்கிறான். To know whether a thing is proper or not. தகுமானபுள்ளி--தகுமானமனிதன், s. A worthy, responsible, competent man; a man of substance or wealth. (c.) தகுந்த அவுழ்தம், s. Proper remedy. தகுந்தசெலவு, v. noun. Proper expenditure. தகுந்தபிராயம், s. Proper age. தகுமானஏது, s. A reasonable cause. தகுமானவேளை--தகுந்தவேளை, s. Due time, proper time. தகும, (third per. neuter.) tīṭcai (p. 242) --தீக்ஷை--தீக்கை, s. Initiation of disciple into the Siva religion by a Guru, who with appropriate ceremonies communicates the appointed mantras; also his introduction to any higher stage or degree in the system; குரூபதேசம். 2. Special means employed by a Guru for the instruction and mental illumination of a disciple; intended for the removal of his sins, and the ripening of his soul for emancipation, ஞானபோதனை. 3. The imparting of spiritual illumination to a soul ripening for absorption; its accumulated stock of merit and demerit--the results of former actions--together with its original மலம்--the source of these actions--being nearly exhausted by the joys and sufferings experienced in its former transmigrations, பக்குவான்மாவைக்க ரையேற்றல். 4. Performance of a course of austerities, விரதநியமம். 5. Performance of vows, சங்கற்பம். W. p. 41. DEEKSHA. --Note. There are seven kinds of தீட்சை. 1. சட்சுதீட்சை, சயனதீட்சை, by the eye or by looking on the disciple for the dispersion of his mental darkness and moral evils, and the communication of spiritual light. 2. பரிசதீட்சை, by the touch, or placing the right hand on the disciple's head, and touching five principle parts of his body, thus conferring on him the virtue of the five lettered incantations. 3. வாக்குத்தீட்சை, வாசகதீட்சை, oral instruction, and illumination. 4. மானசதீட்சை, by the mind or intense interest felt for the disciple, leading to the enlightening of his mind, &c. 5. சாத்திரதீட்சை, நூற்றீட்சை, spiritual illumination by means of the shastras. 6. யோகதீட்சை, பாவனதீட்சை, instruction by example, in character of the silent, motionless ascetic, in the eight postures prescribed. (See யோகம்.) 7. அ வுத்திரிதீட்சை, imparting instruction by symbolic figures, made on the ground, &c. This last is two-fold, ஞானாவுத்திரி, and கிரியாவுத்திரி.--Note. There are two other kinds of தீட்சை; 1. சபீசதீட்சை, instruction that has reference to future rites to make them complete; 2. நிர்ப்பீசதீட்சை, instruction complete in itself. சிவதீட்சை--சைவதீட்சை, 3 The three stated introductory rites of the Saiva system. 1. சமயதீட்சை, the initiatory rite of discipleship. 2. விசேஷதீட்சை, special rite confirming the disciple, after which he eats in private, or unseen by those of lower degree, and his eligible to read, and receive instruction in the Agama mysteries. It is administered only to சைவர், who eat no flesh or fish. 3. நிருவா ணதீட்சை, the highest rite entitling the disciple to perform puja, to sit and eat with his Guru, and to enjoy all the privileges of the system. தீட்சதர், s. (plu.) Persons who have received the initiatory, or any succeeding rite of the Saiva religion, தீட்சைபெற் றோர். 2. The brahmans of சிதம்பரம், formerly said to have been three-thousand, தில்லைமூவாயிரவர். தீட்சதன், s. A disciple who has received the தீட்சை. தீட்சைகேட்க--தீட்சைபெற, inf. To receive தீட்சை of the guru. தீட்சைகொடுக்க--தீட்சைபண்ண--தீட் சைவைக்க, inf. To administer தீட்சை. தீட்சைபெற்றவன், appel. n. (neg. தீட் சையில்லாதவன்.) One who has received தீட்சை, to whom the secrets of religion may be communicated. 16)

nir (p. 277) A Sanscrit prefix implying negation, privation, இன்மை, as நிர்நாமன், the nameless; also fulness, நிறைவு, as நிர்நாசம், entire destruction. The final ர், often takes the particle உ, as நிரு; sometimes changes to ஷ், as நிஷ்களங்கம், being spotless; to ச், as நிச்சிந்தை, a quiet mind, and to ன், as நின் மலம். See துர். நிரங்குசம், s. Uncontrolled, self-willed, கட்டுப்படாமை; [ex அங்குசம், goad.] நிரங்குசன், s. The Deity, the uncontrolled, கடவுள். நிரஞ்சனம், s. Void of passions, or emotion, மாசின்மை. நிரஞ்சனன், s. The Deity, கடவுள். 2. Argha, அருகன். நிரஞ்சனி, s. Parvati, Lukshmi, &c. நிரட்சம், s. Terrestrial equator. நிரட்சரம்--நிரக்ஷரம், s. That which is without letters, எழுத்தின்மை. நிரட்சரகுக்ஷி, s. A blockhead, one that does not know letters, மூடன்; [ex குக்ஷி. belly.] நிரதிகாரம், s. Being without authority. நிரதிகாரன், s. One not competent, not duly authorized to execute authority. 2. [in the agamas.] One unworthy, ineligible, unauthorized to perform sacred rites, அநதிகாரி. நிரந்தரம், s. Continuity, uninterruptedness, இடமின்மை. 2. (சது.) Closeness, nearness, நெருக்கம். 3. Perpetuity, எப் பொழுதும். 4. A monkey, குரங்கு. நிரந்தரன், s. The Supreme Being the incomprehensible, கடவுள். நிரபராதம், s. Faultlessness, blamelessness, குற்றமின்மை. நிரபராதி, s. An innocent person. நிரபேட்சம்--நிரபேட்சை--நிரபே��வுள். நிருநாமன், s. The Deity--as நிருணா மன். நிருபாதி, s. Freedom or liberation from passions, or from pain, suffering, &c., உபாதியின்மை; [ex உபாதி, pain.] நிருபாதிகம், s. That which is freed, as the mind of the ascetic from secularities, &c., நிர்விகற்பம். நிருபாதானம், s. Being without an immediate, proximate cause, துணைக்காரண மின்மை; [ex உபாதானம்.] நிருமதம், s. An elephant grown quiet by age, free venereal fury, மதமில்லா யானை. நிருமலம்--நிர்மலம்--நின்மலம். s. Immaculateness, freedom from impurity, மாசின்மை. நிருமலன், s. The Supreme Being, கட வுள். 2. Siva, சிவன். 3. Argha, அருகன். 4. Vishnu, விஷ்ணு. நிருமூடம்--நிர்மூடம், s. Stupidity, blockishness, அறிவின்மைமிகுதி; also நின் மூடம்; [ex நிர், fulness.] நிருமூடன், s. A stupid man, a fool a ninny. நிருமூலம்--நிர்மூலம், s. That which is baseless, or without root, மூலமின்மை. 2. Extirpation, utter destruction, total extinction, பாழாதல்; also நின்மூலம். நிருமூலப்பட--நிருமூலமாக, inf. To be utterly destroyed. நிருமூலமாக்க--நிரூமூலம்பண்ண, inf. To destroy totally. நிருவாசம், s. That which is uninhabited, without occupant, குடியின்மை. நிருவிகற்பம்--நிர்விகற்பம், s. Freedom from passions, emotions, &c., entire tranquillity of the soul by abstract devotion, விகற்பமின்மை. நிருவிகற்பக்காட்சி, s. [in the Agama log.] Indefinite or indistinct knowledge, perception, &c. See காட்சி. நிருவிகற்பசமாதி--நிருவிகற்பச்சமாதி, s. The state of the ascetic, void of all affection, passion, &c., ஒர்யோகநிலை. நிருவிகாரம்--நிர்விகாரம், s. Unchangeableness, as in the Deity, who, in performing his operations is unaffected by them and in the actions of creatures has no participation or contamination, விகாரமின்மை. 2. Freedom from passions, &c., as நிர்க்குணம். நிருவிகாரி--நிர்விகாரி, s. One free from change as the Deity, or as the soul approximating to the Deity, கடவுள். நிருவிக்கினம்--நிர்விக்கினம், s. Freedom from obstruction, impediment, இடையூறி ன்மை. நிருவிசாரம்--நிர்விசாரம், s. Carelessness, recklessness, வேண்டாமை. 2. Tranquillity, freedom from, கவலையின்மை. நிருவிடம்--நிருவிஷம்--நிர்விஷம். s. A plant, Curcuma Zedoaria from which a poisonous drug is extracted, used as an antidote to snake bites, ஓர்பூண்டு. 2. (fig.) [ex நிர், fulness.] A very wicked person, துன்மார்க்கன். நிர்க்குணம், s. [vul. நிர்க்குணம்] Being without attributes, குணமின்மை. நிர்க்குணன், s. The Deity. See குணம். நிர்த்தாட்சிணியம், s. An unfavorable look, unkindness, unmindfulness, கண் ணோட்டமின்மை. நிர்த்தூளி, s. Utter demolition, entire destruction, சருவநாசம். நிர்தூளிபண்ண--நிர்த்தூளியாக்க, inf. To destroy utterly. நிர்த்தூளியாக, inf. To be reduced to dust, destroyed. நிர்நாசம், s. Imperishableness. See நிருநாசம். நிர்நிமித்தம்--நிர்நிமித்தியம், s. Without and cause, முகாந்தரமின்மை. நிர்ப்பத்தியம்--நிஷ்பத்தியம், s. Being without restraint in diet, &c., as a patient, பத்தியமின்மை. நிர்ப்பந்தம், s. [vul. நிற்பந்தம்] Misery, calamity, wretchedness, affliction.-Note. This word varies in Tamil from the Sanscrit. நிர்ப்பந்தமாயிருக்கிறவன். A woman in travail. (R.) நிர்ப்பாக்கியம், s. [vul. நிற்பாக்கியம்.] Unluckiness, misfortune. நிர்ப்பாக்கியன், s. Beauty, அழகு.--There are different kinds of torches, as இரும்புப்பந் தம், எரிபந்தம், ஏணிப்பந்தம், காடபந்தம், which See in their places; also துணிப்பந்தம், or வண் ணார்பந்தம், a torch made of rags obtained from washermen. பந்தக்காட்சி--பந்தம்பறி, s. A ceremony observed at the close of some Saiva festivals, when the torches are snatched away by the people to represent what the wife of Siva did to him when angry. பந்தங்கட்ட, inf. To make flambeaus. முகத்திலேபந்தங்கட்டிக்கொண்டுநிற்கிறான்..... His face flames with anger. பந்தஞ்செய்ய, inf. To tie, to bind. 2. To bind the soul in bodies, to connect it with matter or births. பந்ததயிலம், s. A kind of medicinal oil, சுடர்த்தயிலம். பந்தமுட்டி, s. Torches arranged so as to represent an elephant. (Beschi.) பந்தமும்வீடும். Bondage and liberation of souls; all creatures being affected by these. (p.) பந்தம்பிடிக்க, inf. To carry torches. பந்தம்போட, inf. To make and light a torch. பந்தவரிசை, s. A course or order of lights in a procession, தீவர்்த்தியின்வரிசை. 2. A play with flambeaus lighted at each end, ஓர்விளையாட்டு. பந்தவிளக்கு, s. A flambeau. பந்தர், s. [also பத்தர்.] Persons in bondage; those under the influence of moral evil on account of the sins of former births, and not yet eligible for divine illumination, பாசத்துக்குள்ளானவர்கள். 85) *
