The nectarine principle in the head or brain from which the silent, motionless devotee is supposed to obtain nutrition, support and enjoyment, when living without external food. அமுதபுட்பம், s. A creeping plant, சிறுகுறிஞ்சா, Periploca, L. அமுதப்பார்வை, s. A favorable or propitious look. as of a lady towards her admirer, குளிர்ந்தபார்வை. அமதமேந்தல், v. noun. Giving food to ascetics and other virtuous persons, guests, as one of the nine kinds of புண்ணியம், and of the sixteen உபசாரம். அமுதயோகம், s. [in astrology.] The auspicious conjunction of a certain day of the week, phase of the moon and lunar constellation. See யோகம். அமுதர், s. Celestials, வானோர். 2. Herdsmen, இடையர். (p.) அமுதவல்லி, s. A creeper, as சீந்தில். அமுதவெழுத்து, s. Letters deemed propitious and proper to begin a poem, or to be in other important places. Loss of power, property, dignity, &c., சீர்கேடு. ஈடன், s. A strong, competent, wealthy man, பெருமையுடையோன். ஈடன்பாடஞ்சான். A wealthy man will not fear losses. ஈடாட, inf. To compete with another, நேர்நிற்க. 2. [prov.] To be loose--as a tooth, a nail, the spokes of a wheel, to joggle, உழல. ஈடாட்டம், v. noun. Competing or matching with another. 2. Pecuniary ability, the free use of money--as by a rich merchant, கொடுக்கல்வாங்கல். 3. Being loose--as a nail, &c., உழலுகை. ஈடுகட்ட--ஈடுபண்ண, inf. To give security, பிணைகொடுக்க. 2. To make amends, restitution, reprisals, &c., to identify, ஈடுசெய்ய. ஈடுகொடுக்க--ஈடுசெலுத்த, inf. To reward, give an equivalent, to content, பதிலளிக்க. 2. To bear, tolerate, endure, yield, &c., ஈடுகட்ட. அவனுக்கீடுகொடுக்கமுடியாது. It is impossible to give him satisfaction. வீடுபலக்கக்கட்டினாற்புயலுக்குமீடுகொடுக்கும். If the house be strongly built, it will endure the storm. அவனுக்கிவனீடுகொடுக்கமாட்டான். This person cannot compete with him. ஈடுபாடு, s. Loss and gain, நய நஷ்டம். 2. Substitution, ஒப்பு. ஈடேற, inf. To be emancipated from sin, births, &c., to obtain final happiness, உய்ய. 2. To be saved from ruin and be rendered secure, to rise from indigence to prosperity, to be completely rescued from distress, difficulty, danger, disease, &c., வாழ்வடைய. கன்னிகையீடேறிவிட்டாள். The girl has attained a marriage settlement. அந்தக்குடியீடேறிவிட்டது. That family is rescued from indigence, saved from ruin. &c. ஈடேற்ற, inf. To deliver, rescue, இரட்சிக்க. 2. To raise one from distress, indigence, &c. to the attainment of the desired good, to promote, to establish in good circumstances. வாழ்வடை யச்செய்ய. 3. To redeem, emancipate from births, &c., மீட்க. ஈடேற்றப்பட, inf. To be saved, delivered, rescued from ruin indigence, distress, &c., to be rendered secure against danger, &c., இரட்சிக்கப்பட. ஈடேற்றம், s. Final and eternal happiness, the liberation of the soul from the body and its exemption from further transmigrations, and translation to a permanent state of happiness, final emancipation, பேரின்பவாழ்வு. 2. Deliverance from a state of suffering, indigence, &c., உய்வு. 3. The marriage of a destitute girl under favorable auspices, கன்னிகையீடேற்றம். ஈட்டுக்கீடு, s. Like for like, retaliation, requital. கடையீடு, s. Ground the lowest in value and assessment. தலையீடு, s. A very fruitful soil, known to be such by its aspect. 6)

ēkāntam (p. 77) s. A solitary place, தனி த்திருக்குமிடம். 2. Solitude, loneliness, retirement, தனிமை. 3. Concentration of the mental powers on an object, especially on the deity, entire abstraction of mind, தனித் துயோகஞ்செய்கை. Wils. p. 172. EKANTA. (p.) ஏகாந்தசேவை, s. Worshipping the Deity in secret, தனித்தசேவை. 2. Private attendance on a Guru. to receive instruction in the mysteries of religion, to pay him adoration, &c., தனித்துக்குருவைப் பணிகை. (ஞா. 21.) (p.) ஏகாந்தஸ்தலம், s. A private or retired place, தனித்தவிடம். ஏகாந்தநித்திரை, s. Sweet sleep, undisturbed repose. 2. The entire abstraction of the devotee, entire freedom from wordly care. ஏகாந்தமாயிருக்க, inf. To be retired, to be secluded from worldly affairs, to be given up to devotion, &c. ஏகாந்தமண்டபம், s. A room for retirement in a palace. ஏகாந்தவாழ்வு, s. Monastic life, the life of an ascetic, துறவியின்வாழ்க்கை. 2. To pass or get over, to cross, pass through a river, a country, &c., to traverse, கடந்துபோக. 3. To exceed, go beyond, surpass, அளவிறக்க. 4. To go too far, transgress, deviate from rule, disobey, violate to command, a custom, &c., மீற. 5. To go, pass by, proceed, pass--as time, water, clouds, shadow, &c., to become obsolete, செல்ல. 6. To relinquish, surmount, escape from the sea of births, the world, &c. (ஞா. 5.) 7. To depart from, நீங்க. 8. To overcome, conquer, vanquish, செயிக்க. நீங்கிக்கடப்பனேல். Transcendent wisdom. கடந்தநிலை, s. A transcendent degree--that of the ascetic. கடந்தேற, inf. To rise to a higher degree in religion, நற்கதியடைய. 2. To pass safely through disasters, difficulties, &c., to be saved, இடையூறுகடக்க. அணைகடந்தவெள்ளம், s. A flood overflowing an embankment. ஆணைகடத்தல், v. noun. Violating an oath. 2. Disobeying the orders of a superior. 3. Disregarding the solemn adjuration of a conjurer--as wild beasts. கடப்பு, v. noun. Passing over, க டக்கை. 2. s. A stile or other contrivance in a lane or hedge which a man may pass over or through, but not cattle, இடுக்குமரமுதலியன. கடப்புக்கால், s. [prov.] Bandy legs, வளைந்தகால். கடவான், s. [prov.] A channel cut in the ridge of a rice-field to let the surplus water pass away, or for watering the next field, நீர்மடை. கடவு, s. [prov.] Way, path, வழி. கடவுமரம், s. A turn-stile--as கடவை. கடவை, s. Fault, defect, crime, குற்றம். (பிங்.) 2. A leap, jump, passing over, கடக்கை. 3. The door of a native house, garden, &c., the sill of which is to be stepped over, வாயில். 4. A ladder, ஏணி. 5. kiruttiyam (p. 111) s. Act, actions, performances, operation, தொழில். 2. Moral actions good or bad, involving future retributions, கன்மக்கிரியை. 3. A course of conduct, நடக்கை. 4. Work, business, employment, லௌகிகவேலை. 5. Religious rules, prescribed duties, கடமை. 6. Rites, ceremonies, &c., religious acts or practice, சடங்கு. 7. The operations of the deity--popularity in the characters of creator, preserver and destroyer; but in the mystic parts of the Agama system, the works of obscuring and enlightening the soul are superadded. Wils. p. 243. KRUTYA. தன்கிருத்தியந்தான்பார்க்கவேண்டும். Each one must perform his appropriate duties, personal, social, relative, civil, &c. கிருத்தியகர்த்தா, s. An operating deity, or a god who performs either of the five great operations in the universe. கிருத்தியகர்த்தாக்கள், s. (pl.) Agents who carry on operations in the universe; also, those of the விஞ்ஞானகலர் and பிர ளயாகலர் class of souls that have advanced so as to be cleansed from மலம், and permitted to be operative. கிருத்தியப்பிழை, s. Misdeeds, misbehaviour. 2. Failure or transgression in the performance of prescribed rites, ceremonies or other duties. கிருத்தியமில்லாதவன், s. One who does not practise the rites of the religion. ஒருகிருத்தியமுமில்லாதவன். One unemployed. கிருத்தியமுடிக்க, inf. To perform prescribed duties--as religious rites, ceremonies, &c. கிருத்தியம்பண்ண--கிருத்தியம்நடத்த inf. To perform the works of creation, &c..--as a deity, ஐந்தொழில்செய்ய. The direct object of this work is fancied to be; 1. To cleanse the soul from its moral defilements. 2. To cause it to experience the fruit of former actions. 3. To give it a temporary rest. 4. To produce an equilibrium between the good and evil actions of the soul. 5. To emancipate it from the பாசம் entanglements. (சிவ. சி.) 2. To perform works, rites, &c., சடங்குசெய்ய. 3. To perform the duties of one's calling, தொழில்செய்ய. 4. To perform the funeral rites for a deceased ancestor, உத்தரகிரியைசெய்ய. பஞ்சகிருத்தியம், s. The five operations of deity under various names, forms and modifications, viz.: 1st. சிருட்டி or படை த்தல், the work of creating or transforming matter, evolving it from the primitive Maya, producing words, furnishing the soul with its appropriate body, according to its actions in a previous birth, &c. In the popular system, this office is ascribed to Brahma. 2d.திதி or காத்தல், the work of preserving, usually ascribed to Vishnu. 3d. சங்காரம் or அழித்தல், the work of destroying, or of reducing the universe to the primitive Maya, through numerous involutions, --as earth into water, water into fire, &c. This office is ascribed to உருத்தி ரன், who by his worshippers is identified with Siva whom they consider supreme. 4th. திரோபவம் or மறைத்தல், the work of obscuration, or the veiling of the soul in moral darkness, and beclouding the understanding, so that the divine being cannot be perceived, while the mind attracted and illuded by visible and sensual objects, is excited to the performance of new actions, by which absolute liberation from பாசம் entanglements is prevented, and connection with Maya and its consequent transmigrations--except where the sanchita (சஞ்சிதம்) of former births is exhausted --is indefinitely prolonged. This is ascribed to மயேச்சுரன். 5th. அனுக்கிரகம் or அருளல், this is a work of benevolence as exerted for the benefit of the soul in furnishing it with appropriate bodies by which to expiate the guilt of former actions, though obscuring it with திரோ பவம், while it is thus working itself clear, at length withdrawing the veil and showing it that all visible and sensual objects are illusory and deceptive; also annihilating the passions and exciting disgust toward the objects of sense, and utter indifference to all mundane affairs, and thus causing entire cessation from physical and moral actions, and maturing it for final emancipation, and union with the Supreme. It is ascribed to சதாசிவம். சமுசாரகிருத்தியம், s. Domestic affairs, household business. 10) *
குரு
kuru (p. 125) s. A guru, a spiritual teacher, a priest, ஆசான்.--Note. According to the shastras, the guru is to be regarded by the disciple as the personification of the deity; and to be worshipped with divine honors. In his presence, the disciple is exonerated from his accustomed rites, and devotions, and addresses him by appellatives, used in addressing the deity of his sect. 2. the planet Jupiter, regarded as the guru or priest of Swerga, &c., வியாழன். 3. Heaviness, weight, பாரம். 4. Consequence, importance, moment, காத்திரம். 5. Greatness, eminence, excellence, exaltedness, பெருமை. 6. [in music.] The quantity of a long vowel, or a long note. இருமாத்திரை. 7. [in gram.] A long vowel, நெடில். 8. [in the Agamas.] The deity Siva--as illuminator of souls, சி வன். 9. Divinity, திவ்வியம். Wils. p. 293. GURU. 1. A kind of native arsenic,, பலண் டுறுகம். 11. [in medi. &c.] Blue vitriol, துருசி. 12. [in alchy.] A compound medicine, formed of different metals; phylosopher's powder, உலோகங்களை வேதிக்குங்சிந்தூரமுதலியவை. 13. [in chem.] Mercury, இரதம்.--Note. In the last three senses, the word Guru has its technical meanings, derived however from its literal meaning of precepter and director. 14. Brilliancy, lustre, effulgence, பிரகா சம். Wils. p. 31. GHRU. 15. The name of one of the nine sons of அங்கீதிரன், who was the first monarch of Jambu Dwipa, அங்கீதிரன்புதல்வரில் ஒருவன். (காந்.) 16. One of the nine division or var'shas of Jambu Dwipa which fell to the share of the prince Kuru, being the most northern portion beyond the Sringa range of mountains, குருவருடம். 17. The name of a prince of the lunar race, famous in the Bharata, from whom the family was called குருகுலம் and the descendants, கௌரவர்; குரு குலவம்சத்து முதல்அரசன். (பார.) 18. A country near Delhi, over which Kuru of the lunar race was once a sovereign, குருபூமி. (பார.) 19. prickly heat, வேர்க்குரு; Wils. p. 232. KURU. 2. Pustule, blister; hence, any eruptive disease--as the small-pox, chicken-pox, measles, &c., குருவியாதி. குருஆரால்மூக்குப்போலிருக்கின்றது. The smallpox is like the nose of a lamprey. குருநாதன், s. The name of Skanda-as having explained to his father Siva the mystic word ஓம். 2. Siva. 3. A guru--as the lord of the disciple. குருபரன்--குருமூர்த்தி, s. The deity in human form, appearing for the instruction of a devoted person of the சக லர், especially spoken of Siva. குருகடாட்சம், s. The gracious or benign look of the guru on his disciple, dispelling sin, imparting spiritual wisdom, and preparing the soul for emancipation. குருகற்பனை, s. Precept or the guru-deemed sacred. குருசந்தானம், s. A regular succession of priests, or gurus. குருசம்பாவனை, s. Blessing or favor of the guru. 2. Worship or honor due to the guru. குருசம்பிரதாயம், s. Oral instruction in the secret meaning of the mantras, &c., handed down from generation to generation, in the line of the guru, and by him communicated confidentially to his advanced disciples. குருசன்னிதானம், s. The presence of the guru. குருசேடம், s. Remains of a guru's food--considered sacred, குருப்பிரசாதம். குருசேவை, s. Civilities, duties, worship, &c., paid to a guru, குருஉபசரணை. குருதக்கணை--குருதட்சிணை, s. Fees or presents to the guru, commonly in money, given with due homage, &c. குருதீட்சை--குருதீக்கை, s. The initiation of a disciple by a guru to certain privileges of his religion, or afterwards to a more advanced degree, குரூபதேசம். குருத்திரவியம், s. Property or treasure of the guru. குருத்துரோகம், s. Treachery towards a guru, or injury of one. குருநிந்தை, s. Indignity to the priest. குருத்துவம், s. Priesthood, or the dignity, power, honor, &c., of a guru, குருத்தன்மை. 2. Honor, respectability, கனம். Wils. p. 293. GURUTVA. குருபத்தி--குருவிசுவாசம், s. Dutiful love, piety, &c., towards the guru, குருவி னிடத்திலன்பு. குருபத்தினி--குருபன்னி, s. The wife of a guru, குருவின்மனைவி. குருபாரம்பரியம், s. Ancestral priesthood in regular succession; the lineage or genealogy of a guru,குருபாரம்பரை. குருபீடம், s. The dignified seat, or office of a guru, குருஸ்தானம். குருபுத்திரன், s. A son of a guru, குரு புதல்வன். 2. An obedient disciple, உண் மையானசீஷன். குருபூசை, s. Pujah or worship, offered to a guru, by an advanced disciple competent to do it, குருவுக்குச்செய்யுமாராதனை. 2. Food, &c., given to Brahmans, religious mendicants, &c., by the disciples of a deceased guru, in rememberence of him as deifled, இறந்துபோனகுருவைக்குறித்துச்செய் யும்பூசை. குருபோதனை, s. The instruction of the guru. குருப்பட்டம், s. The office, authority of dignity of a guru, குருத்துவம். குருப்பட்டம்பெற, inf. To receive priesty authority, ordination, &c. குருப்பட்டாபிஷேகம், s. The ordination of a guru. குருப்பிரசாதம், s. The favor, grace, or blessing of the guru; gift from the guru, குருவருள். 2. Remains of a guru's food, குருவுண்டசேஷம். குருமரியாதை, s. Reverence for the guru. குருமுகமாய்க்கேட்க--குருமுன்னிலை யாயறிய--குருவாக்கியமாய்க்கேட்க inf. To learn viva voce, so as to attain certainty in doubtful matters. குருமுறை, s. A guru's teaching, குரு சொல்லியமுறை. குருமுன்னிலையாய், In the presence of the guru, குருவின்முன்னிடம். 2. By means or favor of the guru, குருமூலம். குருமை, s. Dignity, superiority, பெ ருமை. குருமூர்த்தம், s. The manifestation of a deity as a guru for the instruction of disciples; especially spoken of Siva, குரு வடிவம். குருலிங்கசங்கமம், s. An aggregate of the spiritual guru--Siva under the phallic emblem--and the devotees of Siva, குருவுஞ் சிவமுந் திருக்கூட்டமும். குருமொழி--குருவசனம்--குருவாக்கியம் --குருவாக்கு, s. The precepts, instructions, &c., of a guru. குருவுக்குநாமம்வைக்கிறவன், s. One who out-schemes, and out-wits, his guru, teacher or superior. குருவுபதேசம்--குரூபதேசம்,s. The initiation of a disciple by the guru. சற்குரு, s. A divine guru, the heavenly teacher. குருசந்திரயோகம், s. The conjunction of Jupiter and the moon in the same sign--considered auspicious. குருசாரபலம், s. [in astrol.] Good and ill results, derived from the progress of the planet Jupiter through the signs, வியாழபலன். குருவாரம், s. Thursday, வியாழக்கிழ மை. குருக்கொடுக்க, inf. [prov.] To instigate, ஏவிவிட. 2. To persuade, incite, commonly to a bad action, கொடுமைசெய் யத்தூண்ட. 3. To assume to teach, give advice &c., in the presence of the learned, புத்திசொல்ல. குருக்கொள்ள, inf. To assume to teach, give advice, &c., above one's age. இராசநீதி குருக்கொண்டு முதிர்ந்தனையோ. Do you take upon you to teach jurisprudence? (பார.) குருதுரியம், s. [in the Agamas.] The highest degree in the சுத்தம் state of souls; that next to absorption. குருபதம், s. The bliss of the deity, சதானந்தம். 2. Liberation from births, and absorptiom in the deity, பிறவிநீக்கம். குருமுடிக்க, inf. To combine ingredients with medicines to make them active, or to neutralize poisonous qualities, &c., இரசவாதகுருமுடிக்க. குருகுலம், s. The Kuru dynasty; the patronymic is commonly applied to the sons and descendants of Dhrutarashtra, குருவமிசம். குருகுலத்தரசர்--குருகுலவேந்தர், s. Kings of the Kuru race. குருநிலம், s. The territory of the king Kuru. குருக்கேத்திரம்--குருக்ஷேத்திரம், s. The country near Delhi, the scene of the great battle between the Kurus and Pándavas, described in the Bharata. Wils. p. 242. KURUKSHETRA. குருக்கேத்திரன், s. The name of a king in mythology, ஓர்வீரன். குருவருடம், s. One of the nine portions or divisions of the central continent, or Jambu Dwipa, ஓர்கண்டம். [prov.] To shoot forth; to break out--as pimples, &c. குருமுகறன்--குருமூஞ்சி, s. [vul.] One whose face in pock-pitted. குருவண்டு--குருப்பூச்சி, s. A kind of spotted wasp, ஓர்குளவி. குருவெறும்பு, s. A handful, கைகொண்டஅளவு. 12. Sleeve of a garment, சட்டையின்கை. 13. Ability, சாமர்த் தியம். 14. A rafter, கைமரம். கைகட்டிநிற்க, inf. To stand with the arms folded; i. e. to stand in awe, to obey strictly. கைகழுவ, inf. To wash the hands after cating. 2. To relinquish, reject. கைகாட்ட, inf. To make signs with the hand, to beckon, &c. 2. To make gestures with the hands--as dancing girls. 3. To give a bribe, a present, something to please one, &c. 4. To make a pretence of giving; to give a little only. 5. To make signs with the back of the hand for one to go. கை. 8. The ear, or organ of hearing, காது. 9. The hearing or trial of a case, வழக்குக்கேட்கை. 1. Report, rumor, பேச்சு. 11. Tradition, பாரம்பரியம். கேள்வியற்றுக்கிடக்கிறது. There is no administration of justice; no justice or satisfaction can be obtained. கேள்விமுயல். Be prompt in receiving information. கேள்விகொடுக்க, inf. To give ear, to listen--not elegant. கேள்விமறுமொழி, s. Question and answer; a catechism. கேள்விக்கடுதாசி, s. [prov.] Written application to a court of justice. 2. Tenders or proposals in writing. கேள்விக்காரர், s. [prov.] Bidders at an auction. 2. Persons who tender proposals at a purchase. 3. Candidates or applicants for an office. கேள்விச்செவி, s. Listening credulously to hear-say reports. கேள்விச்செவியன் ஊரைக்கெடுத்தான். The credulous ruler ruined the country. கேள்விப்பத்திரம், s. [prov.] A request, application, petition, &c., in writing. கேள்விகேட்பாடு, s. [local.] Judicial inquiry, investigation. கேள்வியற்றஊர்--கேள்வியில்லாதஊர், s. A town without justice. கேள்விமுறை, s. Inquiry into; superintendence, control, management. கேள்வியாக, inf. To be heard, to be reported; to reach the ears--as news; to be heard in court. கை கைகாட்டு, v. noun. Gesture with the hand, as in dancing; beck of the hand. கைகுவிக்க, inf. To hold up the hands joined, in worship, &c. See குவி. கைகுறண்ட, inf. To have the hands bent by spasms. 2. To be cramped in the hands. 3. To be stingy, parsimonious, close-fisted. கைகூச, inf. To be backward in using the hand. See கூசு. கைகூட, inf. To come to hand, be obtained, to succeed, அனுகூலப்பட. அவன்செய்வதெல்லாம் அவனுக்குக் கைகூடும். All that he does prospers. கைகூப்பு, v. noun. Raising the joined hands in worship--as கூப்பு. 2. The distance from the tip of the fingers to the feet, when the hands are joined and raised above the head. கைகொட்ட, inf. To clap the hands. கைகோக்க, inf. To clasp one another's hands, to join hands. 2. To be arm in arm, to take another's arm. கைகோத்தாட, inf. To dance with arms linked. கைகோள், s. A course of conduct, especially in love affairs. (அகப்பொ.) கேள்வி, v. noun. The grand subjects of information under four heads; 1. அ றம், virtue or a virtuous course of action; all knowledge relating to the nature or practice of virtue, or having virtue as its object, including religion, jurisprudence, ethies and every thing connected with the well-being of society, and the promotion of universal benevolence towards all sentient beings. This is subdivided into, 1. இல்லறம், the duties and usages of man--as a member of society. 2. துறவறம், the duties and practices of the recluse, who renounces social life and retires to the desert. 2. பொருள், wealth, property, substance; truth; all kinds of knowledge relating to the nature, acquisition and uses of learning and wealth--including. 1. கல்விப்பொருள், general knowledge, and science. 2. செல் வப்பொருள், property, trade, commerce and the various occupations for gain or the support of life. 3. இன்பம், delight, gratification, knowledge of the nature and means of pleasure and bliss--especially love and matrimony. 4. வீடு, liberation from births, knowledge relating to final emancipation or eternal felicity. --Note. Another classification makes five parts, the fifth embracing the practice of the rules laid down for the attainment of the benefits implied in the four. 72)

caṉaṉam (p. 173) s. Birth; transmigration, whether past, present or future; production in creation by birth, or otherwise, from the celestials down to vegetables. See பிறப்பு. W. p. 339. JANANA. சனனகாலம், s. The time of birth. சனனகாண்டம், s. [R. Cath. usage.] The book of creation, Genesis. சனனசக்கரம், s. The name of a work on human Anatomy, and Physiology, by திருநந்திதேவர், ஓர்நூல். சனனசாகரம், s. The vast ocean of births, consisting of endless transmigrations. சனனசாபல்லியம், s. The main object of births; viz.: to secure emancipation. சனனசூதகம்--சனனாசூசம், s. The ceremonial defilement of birth. சனனநாள், s. Birth-day. சனனபூமி, s. One's native land. சனனமரணம், s. Birth and death as incident to the soul. சனனமெடுக்க, inf. To take a birth, to assume transmigration--as the soul, in order to enjoy and suffer the fruits of former actions. சனனமெடுத்தபேறு, s. The object to be secured in taking a body, namely, final emancipation--as சனனசாபல்லியம். சனனமோசனம், s. The termination of births. சனனம்விட, inf. To die. (p.) நல்லசனனம், s. A good or pious person who secures the opportunity of his present birth to obtain salvation. சனனி, s. A mother, தாய். 2. One that is born, சனனமெடுத்தவன். (p.) சனனிக்க, inf. சித்தி
citti (p. 182) s. Success, accomplishment, prosperity, the attainment of the desired object, கைகூடுதல். (c.) 2. Supernatural powers obtained by abstract devotion, and exercised at will, தபோபலம். 3. Final emancipation from mortal existence and the attainment of eternal beatitude, மோட்சம். 4. The sixteenth of the astronomical yogas, ஓர்யோகம். 5. Firmness, durability, திடம்-as காயசித்தி, firmness of body. W. p. 925. SIDDHI. 6. The எட்டி tree. 7. Soap, சவ க்காரம். (p.)--Note. As the last member of a compound word, it implies success obtained--as காயசித்தி, மந்திரசித்தி, &c. சித்திகணபதி--சித்திவிநாயகன், s. Ganesa the god who removes obstacles or gives success. 2. A manifestation of this god. சித்திநெறி, s. The way to bliss. 2. The way to success. (பஞ்சதந்.) சித்திபெற--சித்தியடைய, inf. To succeed. 2. To succeed in magic, medicine or some art. 3. (p.) To obtain bliss. சித்திபெற்றவன்--சித்தியுள்ளவன், s. One who has succeeded in magic, medicine, business, &c. சித்திமுத்தி, s. The happiness of success. (Colloq.) சித்தியாக, inf. To prove successful as magic, incantations, medicines, undertakings, &c., பயன்பட. அட்டசித்தி--அட்டமாசித்தி, s. The eight superhuman powers ascribed to Siva, and which, it is supposed, may be acquired by extraordinary austerities attended with magical rites. They are. 1. அணிமா, the power of reducing one's self or any thing else to the size of an atom. 2. மகிமா, the power of increasing one's bulk without limit. 3. இலகிமா, the power of rendering one's self or other things light, overcoming gravitation. 4. கரிமா, the faculty of increasing weight, solidity, &c., also written கிரிமா. 5. பிராத்தி, the power of attaining every thing desired, as to touch the moon with the finger, &c. 6. பிராகாமியம், the power to overcome natural obstacles and go any where. 7. ஈசத்துவம் or ஈசிதை, Supreme dominion over animate or inanimate nature. 8. வசித்துவம், or விசி தை, the power of enchanting, changing the course of nature or assuming any form.--Note. In Wilson's Dictionary, instead of கரிமா, is given, காமாவசா யிதை, the accomplishment of every promise or engagement. See also Ellis. p. 18. சிவஞானசித்தி, s. [commonly called சித்தியார்.] See சித்தியார். வாக்குச்சித்தி, s. Successful pleading, &c. 2. Supernatural gifts as attained by Munis to give their word effect. 3. Influence attending or supposed to attend the words of some persons. (c.) காரியசித்தி, s. Effect or the result of a thing. 2. Success of a thing. (c.) மந்திரசித்தி, s. சுயம்
cuyam (p. 194) s. (Sa. Svayam.) Self; being; selfexistence, தானாகுகை. 2. Peculiarity, identity, individuality, ஏகத்துவம். 4. Natural habits--as opposed to acquired; reality, originality, genuineness, சுபாவம். 5. Spontaneity, சுயபுத்தி. 6. [prov.] Continuity, perpetuity, constancy, நிதம். சுயகருமம், s. One's own ceremony. சுயகாறுபாறு, s. One's own authority. (R.) சுயகர்த்தன், s. An independent lord. சுயகாரியம், s. One's own affair, private duty. சுயகாரிய துரந்தரன் பரகாரிய பராமுகன். One zealous, in his own business, but neglectful in that of others. சுயகுணம், s. One's own peculiar nature, temper, disposition. 2. Being natural to one, not affected. சுயகுரு, s. One's own guru, the guru of the family or caste. 2. Siva--as the guru, or enlightener of souls. சுயசாதி, s. One's own tribe. சுயசாதிமானம், s. Partiality for persons of one's own caste. Seem சுயசாதியபிமானம். சுயசினேகம், s. Self love, தற்சினேகம். (R.) சுயஞ்சோதி, s. The deity as having light in himself and enlightening souls. சுயதன்மை, s. Own peculiar nature; 'sui-generis.' சுயதேசம், s. One's own country--as சுதேசம். சுயநீலம், s. A genuine sapphire. சுயபாஷை, s. One's own language. சுயபாரபத்தியம், s. Arbitrary power. சுயபுணர்ச்சி, s. Self-pollution, onanism. சுயபுத்தி, s. One's own sagacity, poliey, discretion. 2. A right mind, sobriety, as opposed to derangement, intoxication, fascination, passion, &c. See சுபாவம். சுயபோக்கு, v. noun. One's peculiar nature, temper, disposition. சுயமனுஷாள், s. [prop. சுயமனுஷர்கள்.] One's own relatives. (Colloq.) சுயமாயாடுஞ்சூத்திரம், s. An automaton or self-moving machine. சுயமானபால், s. Unadulterated milk. சுயமாமிசம், s. One's own flesh, kindred. (Christ. usage.) சுயமாய், adv. Of one's own accord, spontaneously. 2. [prov.] Constantly. சுயமானவிவேகம், s. Original genius. சுயம்பாகம், s. Cooking. 2. Cooking for one's self. 3. [with. ஒரு.] Provisions, stores for a meal for one person. சுயம்பாகங்கொடுக்க, inf. To give rice for cooking, in charity. சுயம்பாகம்பண்ண, inf. To cook. சுயம்பாகி, s. [vul. சோம்பாகி.] A cook, மடையன். சுயம்பாட, inf. To make poetry naturally, as one endowed with poetical genius. 2. To make original poetry. (c.) 3. To alter a tune by new composition, flourishes, &c. சுயம்பிரகாசம், s. Original light as in the deity. 2. Original radiance--as of gems, &c., மணியின்கண்ணொளி, (p.) சுயம்பிரகாசன், s. The possessor of light, as enlightener--as சுயஞ்சோதி. சுயவலது, [vul.] One's own capacity or power. (c.) சுயவிருப்பம், s. One's own liking, own choice. சுயாதிபதி, s. An independent sovereign; [ex அதிபதி.] சுயாதிபத்தியம், s. Independent sovereignty, தன்னிஷ்டஆளுகை. சுயாதீனம், s. (also சுவாதீனம்.) Freeagency, independence. 2. One's own right, one's own property. 3. Freedom, liberty, emancipation--opposite to பராதீ னம்; [ex ஆதீனம்.] சுயாதீனன், s. A free agent, one who is his own master. சுயேச்சை--சுவேச்சை, s. Free will, liberty of choice; [ex சுய, et இச்சை.]
திரம்
tiram (p. 239) --ஸ்திரம், s. Firmness, fixedness, stability, உறுதி. 2. Soundness, strength, பலம். 3. Hardness, solidity, உரம். 4. Permanence, durableness, நிலை. 5. Constancy. unchangeableness, மாறாமை. (c.) 6. Final emancipation, முத்தி. 7. Four stationary signs supposed to be propitious. (See திரராசி.) 8. The plant தகரைச்செடி. திரகரணம், s. The four fixed astrological Karana, in oppos. to சரகணம், or those moveable, which are seven. See கரணம். திரப்பட, inf. To be fixed, confirmed, established; to be steady, உறுதிப்பட. திரப்படுத்த--திரமாக்க, inf. To strengthen, to confirm. திரமானமனது, s. An inflexible mind uninfluenced by pleasure or pain. திரமாதம், s. [in astrol.] The four months in which the sun is in the stationary signs, viz.: May, August, November and February, as propitious to things stationary; opposite to சா மாதம் or moving signs. திரராசி, s. astrol.] Signs of the Zodiac favorable to employments of a stationary kind, as building, planting, &c. தீட்சை
tīṭcai (p. 242) --தீக்ஷை--தீக்கை, s. Initiation of disciple into the Siva religion by a Guru, who with appropriate ceremonies communicates the appointed mantras; also his introduction to any higher stage or degree in the system; குரூபதேசம். 2. Special means employed by a Guru for the instruction and mental illumination of a disciple; intended for the removal of his sins, and the ripening of his soul for emancipation, ஞானபோதனை. 3. The imparting of spiritual illumination to a soul ripening for absorption; its accumulated stock of merit and demerit--the results of former actions--together with its original மலம்--the source of these actions--being nearly exhausted by the joys and sufferings experienced in its former transmigrations, பக்குவான்மாவைக்க ரையேற்றல். 4. Performance of a course of austerities, விரதநியமம். 5. Performance of vows, சங்கற்பம். W. p. 41. DEEKSHA. --Note. There are seven kinds of தீட்சை. 1. சட்சுதீட்சை, சயனதீட்சை, by the eye or by looking on the disciple for the dispersion of his mental darkness and moral evils, and the communication of spiritual light. 2. பரிசதீட்சை, by the touch, or placing the right hand on the disciple's head, and touching five principle parts of his body, thus conferring on him the virtue of the five lettered incantations. 3. வாக்குத்தீட்சை, வாசகதீட்சை, oral instruction, and illumination. 4. மானசதீட்சை, by the mind or intense interest felt for the disciple, leading to the enlightening of his mind, &c. 5. சாத்திரதீட்சை, நூற்றீட்சை, spiritual illumination by means of the shastras. 6. யோகதீட்சை, பாவனதீட்சை, instruction by example, in character of the silent, motionless ascetic, in the eight postures prescribed. (See யோகம்.) 7. அ வுத்திரிதீட்சை, imparting instruction by symbolic figures, made on the ground, &c. This last is two-fold, ஞானாவுத்திரி, and கிரியாவுத்திரி.--Note. There are two other kinds of தீட்சை; 1. சபீசதீட்சை, instruction that has reference to future rites to make them complete; 2. நிர்ப்பீசதீட்சை, instruction complete in itself. சிவதீட்சை--சைவதீட்சை, 3 The three stated introductory rites of the Saiva system. 1. சமயதீட்சை, the initiatory rite of discipleship. 2. விசேஷதீட்சை, special rite confirming the disciple, after which he eats in private, or unseen by those of lower degree, and his eligible to read, and receive instruction in the Agama mysteries. It is administered only to சைவர், who eat no flesh or fish. 3. நிருவா ணதீட்சை, the highest rite entitling the disciple to perform puja, to sit and eat with his Guru, and to enjoy all the privileges of the system. தீட்சதர், s. (plu.) Persons who have received the initiatory, or any succeeding rite of the Saiva religion, தீட்சைபெற் றோர். 2. The brahmans of சிதம்பரம், formerly said to have been three-thousand, தில்லைமூவாயிரவர். தீட்சதன், s. A disciple who has received the தீட்சை. தீட்சைகேட்க--தீட்சைபெற, inf. To receive தீட்சை of the guru. தீட்சைகொடுக்க--தீட்சைபண்ண--தீட் சைவைக்க, inf. To administer தீட்சை. தீட்சைபெற்றவன், appel. n. (neg. தீட் சையில்லாதவன்.) One who has received தீட்சை, to whom the secrets of religion may be communicated. 16)
பகவன்
pakavaṉ (p. 286) s. The Supreme Being, கட வுள். 2. Argha, அருகன். 3. Siva, சிவன். 4. Vishnu, திருமால். 5. Brahma, பிரமன். 6. Buddha, புத்தன். 7. A guru, குரு; [ex பகம்.] --Note. It is also applied to the regents of the planets, to the gods of the elements, and sometimes to sages, and Rishis. பகவற்பத்தன், s. One devoted to the daity, being one of the six names given to such as are ripe for emancipation, தேவபத்தன். பகவற்கீதை, s. A section of the Mahabarata. See கீதை.
