Expedient, shift, what is done by hook or by crook, by any means direct or indirect. அபானம், s. The anus, குதம். 2. avā (p. 30) s. Desire, eagerness, avididity, greediness, craving, cupidity, ஆசை. 2. Intense or sensual desire, as lust, avarice, great hunger, thirst, &c., ஆசைப்பெருக் கம். 3. Descent, இறங்குகை. (p.) அவாவயின்விதும்பல், v. noun. The longing of a loving and affectionate husband and his wife when separated. அவாவறுக்க, inf. To extirpate the desires arising from the senses, ஆசைநீக்க, [ex அறு.] அவாவின்மை, s. Freedom from desire, exemption from avarice, lust and other sensual appetites, suppression of the passions, விருப்பமின்மை. 13) *

ஆடி
āṭi (p. 38) s. The month of July, கர்க் கடகமாதம். (c.) 2. (p.) The twenty-first lunar asterism, உத்திராடநாள். 3. Mirror, கண்ணாடி. ஆடிக்கரு, s. Dark clouds in July regarded as indicative of plentiful rains in the ensuing monsoons. ஆடிக்கருவழிந்தால் மழைகுறைந்துபோம். If the teeming clouds in July discharge their contents, the rains will fail in the ensuing season. ஆடிக்கழைக்க, inf. To take away or separate the newly married woman from her husband, and to put her under her parents during the month of July of their first year of marriage. This separation is indispensable to prevent conception in that month, and delivery in the coming April, which is believed to bring ruin upon the family. ஆடிப்பண்டிகை, s. The first day of July (ஆடி.) a day of feasting, mutual visits, &c., when the sun is supposed to enter on its southern course. ஆடிப்பெருக்கு, s. A festival held on the day when the Cavery over-flows in July. 8)

ikẕ (p. 45) --இகழு, கிறேன், இகழ்ந்தே ன், வேன், இகழ, v. a. To contemn, scorn, defame, reproach, revile, disdain, நிந்திக்க. இகழாவிகழ்ச்சி, v. noun. Irony, satire. இகழ்வார், s. Scorners, gain-sayers, revilers, opponents, நிந்திப்பவர். இகழ்ச்சி, v. noun. Dispraise, censure, contumely, defamation, நிந்தை. 2. Meanness, baseness, inferiority, இழிவு. 3. Forgetfulness, neglect, மறதி. இகழ்ச்சியிற் கெட்டாரையுள்ளுக. Consider how many have been ruined by forgetfulness. இகழ்ச்சிபண்ண, inf. To scorn, despise. இகழ்ச்சியானகாரியம், s. A contemptible thing. இகழ்வு, v. noun. Contempt, scorn, defamation, &c., நிந்தை. 10)

iccai (p. 45) s. Wish, desire, விருப் பம் Wils. p. 13. ICHCHA. 2. Intense desire, மிகுவிருப்பம். 3. Covetousness, lust, irregular or inordinate desire, துரிச்சை. 4. Inclination, choice, will, இஷ்டம். 5. (p.) Ignorance, அஞ்ஞானம். 6. Fasehood, பொய். 7. Expostulation, உறுதிச்சொல். இச்சாசத்தி, s. One of the three active or female energies of the deity-benevolence to souls or creatures, உயிர்க் கருணேசம். See சத்தி. (p.) இச்சாபத்தியம், s. Generous diet in sickness-but abstaining from venery--avoiding only what will disagree with medicine. இச்சாபோகம், s. The gratification of desires. (p.) இச்சைப்பட, inf. To desire, covet, wish, to become libidinous. இச்சையடக்கம், s. Mortification of the sensual appetites. துரிச்சை, s. Evil desires, vicious propensities. தன்னிச்சை, s. Free will. 47) *
இந்திரியம்
intiriyam (p. 46) s. [contracted into இந்தியம்.] An organ of sense, or organ of the body, பொறி; [ex இந்திர, the soul or self, or what is with difficulty restrained by the soul.] There are three kinds of இந்திரியம், or sensual organs; viz.: those of perception, those of action and the intellectual organs. Wils. p. 133. INDRYA. I. ஞானேந்திரியம், the organs of sense or perception are five; viz.: 1. சக்கு, சட்சு or கண், the eye, the organ of sight having உருவம் or visible forms as its object. 2. சோத்திரம் or செவி, the ear, the organ of hearing, having சத்தம், (sound) as its object. 3. ஆக்கிராணம் or மூக்கு, the nose, the organ of smelling, having கந்தம், (odors) as its object. 4. சிங்குவை or நா, the tongue, the organ of tasting, having இரசம், (flavors) as its object. 5. தொக்கு or துவக்கு or உடம்பு, the surface of the body, the organ of feeling, having பரிசம், (touch or contact) as its object. II. கன்மேந்திரியம், or organs of actions are five; viz.: 1. வாக்கு, the mouth or organ of speech. 2. பாதம், the feet. 3. பாணி, the hands. 4. பாயுரு, the anus. 5. உபஸ்தம், the genitals. III. அந்தக்கரணம் or அந்தரிந்திரியம், the intellectual powers are four; viz.: 1. மனம், the organ of thought or perception, emotion. 2. புத்தி, understanding, conception, reason, intellect--the organs of examination, investigation, reflection, comparison, device, experiment. 3. ஆங்காரம், emotion, self-importance, inflation, presumption, energy, impulse, the organ of excitement, resolution, effort, &c. 4. சித்தம், volition, will, purpose, determination, that power of the mind which leads to the accomplishment of objects. 2. The sperm, seed of men, விந்து. இந்திரியகோசரம், s. Perceptibleness, capability of being determined by the senses, இந்திரியத்துக்குவிஷயமாகுகை. Wils. p. 132. INDRYAGOCHARA. இந்திரியக்காட்சி--இந்திரியப்பிரத் தியட்சம், s. Evidence of the senses. இந்திரியத்துவாரம், s. The inlets or avenues of the senses--as means of perception. இந்திரியநிக்கிரகம், s. The subjugation of the passions, இந்திரியமடக்குகை. இந்திரியநுகர்ச்சி, s. Enjoyment of sense, இந்திரியானுபவம். இந்திரியாசங்கம், s. Stoicism, detachment from sensual objects, விஷயவெ றுப்பு; [ex ஆசங்கை, doubt.] 18) *
இன்பம்
iṉpm (p. 57) --இன்பு, s. Delight, pleasure, happiness, bliss, அகமகிழ்ச்சி. 2. Agreeableness, இனிமை. 3. [in rhetoric.] One of the nine இரசம், நவரசத்திலொன்று. இன்பங்காட்ட, inf. To be sweet, pleasant, delicious, இனிமைதர. 2. To allure by gratifications, வசீகரிக்க. இன்பதுன்பம், s. Joys and sorrows. இன்பன், s. A husband, கணவன். (p.) இன்புறல், v. noun. Enjoying pleasure, being happy, rejoicing, experiencing, delight, being satisfied, மகிழ்ச்சிபொ ருந்தல். கண்ணுக்கின்பம், s. That which is delightful or pleasing to the eye. காதுக்கின்பம், s. That which is harmonious or pleasant to the ear. உடற்கின்பம், s. That which is pleasant to the touch. பேரின்பம், s. Heavenly bliss. சிற்றின்பம், s. Secular, evanescent pleasure, sensual enjoyment. 55)

irngku (p. 48) கிறேன், இரங்கினேன், வே ன், இரங்க, v. n. To pity, compassionate, commiserate, பரிதபிக்க. 2. To grieve, regret, relent, to feel concern, anxiety, துன் பப்பட. 3. To weep, cry, அழ. 4. (p.) To sound, resound, ஒலிக்க. போனநரட்கிரங்கவும்வரும். And regret may ensue for the days past (in vain.) இரங்கல், v. noun. Weeping, &c., அழுதல். 2. s. An expression of sorrow in love poetry, அகப்பொருட்டுறையினொன்று. 38) *

iṟukku (p. 57) கிறேன், இறுக்கினேன், வே ன், இறுக்க, v. a. To tighten, strain close or hard, to make compact, அழுந்தக்கட்ட. 2. To thicken a liquid, inspissate, உறையச்செ ய்ய. 3. (சது.) To put on clothes, to dress, உடுக்க. 4. [prov.] To urge, coerce, force, ஒடுக்க. 5. To reprimand, reprove, bear hard upon, chide, உறுக்க. இறுக்குவார், s. A saddle girth, the thong of a sandal, any thing used for tying or binding, அழுந்தக்கட்டும்வார். இறுக்கு, v. noun. Pressing, urging, rigor--as of a revenue officer, rigid exaction, coercion, ஒடுக்குகை. 2. Reprimand, reproof, censure, chiding, உறுக்கு கை. 3. s. A hard tie, knot, இறுக்கியமுடிச்சு. 25)

ulkm (p. 65) --உலகு, (Sans. லோக.) World, universe, உலோகம். 2. The earth, பூமி. 3. Country, territory, நாடு. 4. Region, திசை. 5. (fig.) The inhabitants of the world, உலகத்தார். 6. The sky, etherial regions, ஆகாயம். 7. The learned, the good, சான்றோர், 8. (fig.) Created beings or existences, every thing except the Supreme, சிருட்டிப்பொருள்கள். (தத். 37.) 9. Enjoyments, or sufferings apportioned to the soul in the present birth, உலோகானுபவம். (ஞா. 779.) 1. Earthliness, worldliness, secularity, உலகத்தன்மை. 11. A word auspicious to begin a poem, மங்கலச்சொற்களினொன்று. உலகஞ்சொல்லுகிறது. The country says so, such is the public opinion. உலகந்தோன்றிநின்றழிய. To appear, abide and perish periodically--as the universe-உலகசஞ்சாரம், s. Inhabiting the world, பூமியிற்சஞ்சரிக்கை. உலகசயன், s. Buddha, புத்தன். (p.) உலகநடை--உலகவழக்கம்--உலக வழக்கு, s. Fashion, custom, usage, உலகொழுக்கம். 2. Secularity, conformity to custom--as marrying, &c., உலகாசாரம். 3. [in grammar.] Colloquial language-as opposed to இயற்சொன்னடை, செய்யுள் வழக்கு, &c. உலகநாதன், s. The Supreme Being--as Lord of the world, கடவுள். 2. Bramah the creator of the world, பிரமன். (p.) உலகநீதி, s. Morality, நன்னெறி. 2. The rules, or customs of the world-as distinguished from those of religion, or of ascetic life, உலகநடை. 3. Natural law, இயல்பானநீதி. 4. The existing laws of the country, தேசவியற்கைநீதி. 5. Name of a work on morality, ஓர்நூல். உலகநேத்திரன், s. The sun, சூரி யன். (p.) உலகபயித்தியம், s. Worldly pomp, vanity, secularity--as opposed to the feelings and practice of the ascetic, உலக மயக்கம். உலகபாந்தவன், s. The sun, சூரிய ன். (p.) உலகப்பரப்பு, s. The world considered in its expanse, உலகவிரிவு. உலகப்பற்று, s. Attachment to the world, mundane, or sensual attachments, உலகபந்தம். உலகப்புரட்டன், s. One who holds opinions and acts contrary to the sentiments of the wise. உலகமலையாமை, s. One of the ten அழகு or beauties of language, classical usage, &c. See அழகு. உலகமலைவு, s. [in rhetoric.] Incongruity, impossibility, absurdity--as அலை கடல்களேழுந்தூர்த்தந்தாத்தினூடே--மலையனையமால் யானையோட்டிக்--கலவாரை--நீறுசெய்துவையநெ டுங்குடைக்கீழ்வாழ்வித்தான்--மாறாச்சீர்வையையார் கோன், the Pandian king of Madura of endless fame filled the seven seas with sand, drove his elephant through the sky, reduced his enemies to ashes, and brought the whole world under his sway. (அலங்.) உலகமாதா, s. The mother of the world--applied to Sarasvati, சரச்சுவதி. 2. Lukshmi, இலக்குமி. 3. Parvati, பார்ப் பதி. (p.) உலகமீன்றாள், s. Parvati the wife of Siva, the mother of the world, பார்ப்பதி. (p.) உலகமுண்டோன், s. Vishnu the world-eater, விட்டுணு. (p.) உலகரட்சகன், s. The saviour or protector of the world. உலகரட்சணியம்--உலகரட்சை, s. Protection, or salvation of the world. உலகர், s. Worldlings, those engrossed by worldly pursuits. (தீ. 335.) (p.) உலகவழக்கம், s. The customs of the world. உலகவாசை--உலகவாஞ்சை, s. Ardent love of worldly, or sensual enjoyments, உலகவிருப்பம். உலகவாழ்வு, s. Temporal prosperity. உலகளந்தோன், s. Vishnu the measurer of the world, விட்டுணு. (p.) உலகாசாரம், s. Relative duties, the customs, rites or duties to be performed according to the country, caste, rank, relation, &c., of persons respectively. உலகாயிதம், s. A system of materialism, or atheistical epicurianism, அறுசமயங்களிலொன்று. See சமயம். (p.) உலகாள--உலகோம்ப, inf. To govern, protect his country--as one of the duties of a king. உலகாள்வோன், s. A monarch, உலோகாதிபன். உலகியல், s. The customs of the world, உலகநடை. உலகோம்பல், v. noun. Preserving the world--one of the six occupations of kings. See தொழில். உலகோற்பத்தி, s. The origin, or development of worlds. மேலுலகு, s. The upper worlds, which are seven in number, viz.: பூலோ கம், புவர்லோகம், சுவர்லோகம், மகாலோகம், சன லோகம், தபோலோகம், சத்தியலோகம். கீழுலகு, s. The lower worlds or regions; which are also seven, அதலம், விதலம், சுதலம், தராதலம், இரசாதலம், மகாதலம், பாதாளம். மூவுலகம், s. The three worlds, viz.: சொர்க்கம், மத்தியம், பாதாளம். மூவுலகாளி, s. God, (lit.) the sovereign of the three worlds, கடவுள். (p.) மூவுலகுணர்ந்தோன், s. He who comprehends the three worlds, God, க டவுள். 2. Argha, அருகன். (p.) மூவுலகேந்தி, s.
