கிரியை
kiriyai (p. 110) s. Act, action, deed, operation, performance, emphatically good manners, orderliness, cleanliness, செய்கை 2. Religious rites or duties as prescribed by the Shastras, சமயநிஷ்டை. 3. The second degree in the religion of Siva-entitling the disciple to the privilege of performing puja, &c. (See பாதம்.) 4. Works, rites, &c., in religion--as distinguished from abstract or silent devotion, in which these rites and dispensed with. (See சிவபூ சை.) 5. Funeral rites for a deceased ancestor, உத்தரகிரியை. 6. In Sanscrit compounds the word retains its Sanscrit pronunciation, கிரியா. கிரியாகாண்டம், s. Those parts of the Vedas which inculcate works, rites, and ceremonies, கருமகாண்டம்--opposed to ஞா னகாண்டம். கிரியாங்கம், s. Worship, rites and ceremonies, chiefly applicable to prescribed individual practice--as preparing the sacred ashes, repeating the incantations, touching the joints of the fingers while repeating them, &c., கிரியையுறுப்பு. கிரியாங்கம்பண்ண, inf. To perform the several external actions in the daily worship. கிரியாசத்தி, s. lit. The operative energy or power. [in the agama philosophy.] One of the three active or female energies of Siva, by which he effects the creation or evolution of the universe. 2. the faculty or power of action, operation, &c., as applied to any agent. (சிவ. சி.) கிரியாசாதனம், s. Being trained or inured to the performance of works, religious duties, &c., கிரியையனுட்டிப்பு. கிரியாசைவம், s. One of the sixteen divisions of the Siva system. See சைவம். கிரியாசொரூபன், s. One who is the embodiment, கிரியை; (appropriately) Ganesa, who is considered the impersonation of Siva's divine operations. கிரியாதீதன், s.கிரியையொழிந்தவன். கிரியாபதம், s. [in Sanscrit grammar.] A verb, வினைச்சொல். கிரியாபாதம், s. The second of the four stages or degrees in the Siva worship; [ex கிரியை, et பாதம்.] கிரியாபூசை, s. The worship offered to Siva by one in the second degree. (p.) கிரியாமார்க்கம், s. The practice of duties in the second degree of the Siva religion; the performance of rites and ceremonies, கிரியைநெறி. கிரியாமாலை, s. Inflection or conjugation of verbs, chiefly in Sanscrit, வினைச் சொல்லின்ரூபகரணம். கிரியாவதி, s. A person who practices the rites and ceremonies enjoined in the Vedas. கிரியாவுத்திரி, s. Transcendental and symbolical instruction in the most spiritual rites, by a guru to an advanced disciple--opposed to ஞானாவுத்திரி. (சிவ. சி.) கிரியைகெட்டது, appel. noun. Any thing disorderly, slovenly, ஒழுங்கற்றது. கிரியைகெட்டவன், s. One destitute of good manners, slovenly in dress, or irregular in habits. கிரியைக்காரன், s. One in the second degree of the Siva religion. கிரியைக்கேடு, s. slovenliness, debauchery, beastliness, ஒழுங்கின்மை. கிரியைசெய்ய, inf. To perform actions, duties, rites, &c., சடங்குசெய்ய. 2. To perform funeral rites, உத்திரகிரியைசெய்ய. கிரியையனுட்டிக்க, inf. To perform rites, and ceremonies. 2. To practice the daily rites, to perform the duties of the second degree. கிரியையொழிந்தவன், s. One who has dispensed with works, having attained a higher degree, கிரியாபாதங்கடந்தவன். காட்டுக்கிரியை, s. Obsequies, funeral rites in the place of burning or burial --as distinguished from வீட்டுக்கிரியை. 2) *
சமாதி
camāti (p. 163) s. The last of the eight அ ங்கயோகம், or states and modes of silent, contemplative worship, அங்கயோகத்தொன்று. 2. One of the postures of the ascetic for silent meditation, being an upright, majestic position, as a fancied image of the deity, ஞானசமாதி. 3. The abstract contemplation of the ascetic in which the soul is supposed to be independent of the body and mind. (See யோகம்.) 4. Knowledge of the sublimest description--as of the deity, one's own spiritual nature, &c., acquired by supernatural illumination, without the aid of organs physical or mental, சமாதி தரிசனை. 5. A mode of interment, by placing the corpse in a sitting posture in imitation of the சமாதி worshipper, சமாதி யில்வைக்க,--Note. The வீரசைவர் sect are all burried in this manner, (it being deemed improper to burn them lest the linga previously worn should be burnt also,) and occasionally a monument of masonry is built around the corpse, as a linga, which thus becomes an object of worship. 6. A grave, a tomb, a sepulchre, பிணம் புதைக்குங்குழி. 7. [in rhet.] A species of personifications, a metaphor in which the quality or attribute properly belongs to the objects to which the metaphor refers, ஓரலங்காரம்--as பாயிருள்பருகிப்பகல்கான்றெழுதரு பருதி, the orient sun which swallows the darkness and pours forth the day; also, கன்னிமதில், virgin walls, i. e. imperishable, and குமரிஞாழல், the young rush, i. e. ever green. 8. Death, demise, commonly spoken of a devotee, மரணம். W. p. 896. SAMAD'HI. சமாதிக்குப்போக, inf. To betake one's self for a time to his cell, as an advenced devotee to secure uninterrupted, and protracted contemplation in silent worship. சமாதிக்குழி, s. The cell or grave of the devotee for interment, in an erect, sitting posture. 2. A grave. சமாதிபண்ண, inf. To sit in any of the postures of the Yogi. (p.) சமாதிபெற, inf. To receive of the Guru the degree of the Yogi, entitling the person to the privilege of sitting in the சமாதி postures. சமாதியடைய, inf. To sit in the ச மாதி posture in silent meditation. 2. To retire to the grave, to die. 3. To die in an erect posture--as a devotee. சமாதியில்வைக்க, inf. To bury a corpse in a sitting posture--as customary with some Hindus. (c.) சமாதியிருக்க, inf. To sit in a contemplative posture--as a silent devotee. 2. To betake one's self to his sepulchre --as an exalted devotee, on the approach of death, remaining without nourishment in a sitting posture until life is extinct. சமாதியுப்பு, s. A kind of medicinal salt formed from the corpse interred in a sitting posture, taken up after some years; also the salt cast into the grave at the interment to prevent putrefaction. 10)
தீட்சை
tīṭcai (p. 242) --தீக்ஷை--தீக்கை, s. Initiation of disciple into the Siva religion by a Guru, who with appropriate ceremonies communicates the appointed mantras; also his introduction to any higher stage or degree in the system; குரூபதேசம். 2. Special means employed by a Guru for the instruction and mental illumination of a disciple; intended for the removal of his sins, and the ripening of his soul for emancipation, ஞானபோதனை. 3. The imparting of spiritual illumination to a soul ripening for absorption; its accumulated stock of merit and demerit--the results of former actions--together with its original மலம்--the source of these actions--being nearly exhausted by the joys and sufferings experienced in its former transmigrations, பக்குவான்மாவைக்க ரையேற்றல். 4. Performance of a course of austerities, விரதநியமம். 5. Performance of vows, சங்கற்பம். W. p. 41. DEEKSHA. --Note. There are seven kinds of தீட்சை. 1. சட்சுதீட்சை, சயனதீட்சை, by the eye or by looking on the disciple for the dispersion of his mental darkness and moral evils, and the communication of spiritual light. 2. பரிசதீட்சை, by the touch, or placing the right hand on the disciple's head, and touching five principle parts of his body, thus conferring on him the virtue of the five lettered incantations. 3. வாக்குத்தீட்சை, வாசகதீட்சை, oral instruction, and illumination. 4. மானசதீட்சை, by the mind or intense interest felt for the disciple, leading to the enlightening of his mind, &c. 5. சாத்திரதீட்சை, நூற்றீட்சை, spiritual illumination by means of the shastras. 6. யோகதீட்சை, பாவனதீட்சை, instruction by example, in character of the silent, motionless ascetic, in the eight postures prescribed. (See யோகம்.) 7. அ வுத்திரிதீட்சை, imparting instruction by symbolic figures, made on the ground, &c. This last is two-fold, ஞானாவுத்திரி, and கிரியாவுத்திரி.--Note. There are two other kinds of தீட்சை; 1. சபீசதீட்சை, instruction that has reference to future rites to make them complete; 2. நிர்ப்பீசதீட்சை, instruction complete in itself. சிவதீட்சை--சைவதீட்சை, 3 The three stated introductory rites of the Saiva system. 1. சமயதீட்சை, the initiatory rite of discipleship. 2. விசேஷதீட்சை, special rite confirming the disciple, after which he eats in private, or unseen by those of lower degree, and his eligible to read, and receive instruction in the Agama mysteries. It is administered only to சைவர், who eat no flesh or fish. 3. நிருவா ணதீட்சை, the highest rite entitling the disciple to perform puja, to sit and eat with his Guru, and to enjoy all the privileges of the system. தீட்சதர், s. (plu.) Persons who have received the initiatory, or any succeeding rite of the Saiva religion, தீட்சைபெற் றோர். 2. The brahmans of சிதம்பரம், formerly said to have been three-thousand, தில்லைமூவாயிரவர். தீட்சதன், s. A disciple who has received the தீட்சை. தீட்சைகேட்க--தீட்சைபெற, inf. To receive தீட்சை of the guru. தீட்சைகொடுக்க--தீட்சைபண்ண--தீட் சைவைக்க, inf. To administer தீட்சை. தீட்சைபெற்றவன், appel. n. (neg. தீட் சையில்லாதவன்.) One who has received தீட்சை, to whom the secrets of religion may be communicated. 16)

tēvam (p. 259) s. Deity, Godhead, See தெய்வம். 2. Fate; ued only adjectively. தேவகங்கை, s. The celestial Ganges, ஆகாயகங்கை. தேவகடாட்சம், s. Divine favor. தேவகட்டளை, s. Divine injuction, command of God. தேவகணம், s. The class of the inferior gods, or celestials. See கணம். தேவகாந்தாரி, s. A kind of tune, ஓர்பண். See காந்தாரி. தேவகானம், s. Divine melody, tune, &c., தெய்வப்பண். தேவகிரி, s. A place sacred to Skanda near the Himalaya range, ஓர்மலை. தேவகிருபை, s. Divine grace, merey, compassion. தேவகுமாரன்--தேவசுதன், s. The son of a deity. 2. [in Chris. usage.] Jesus Christ. தேவகுரு, s. The planet Jupiter, or its regent, priest of the celestials, வியா ழன். தேவகுருவஞ்சம்--தேவகுருவம், s. A place of bliss, one of the போகபூமி, which see. (சது.) தேவகுலம், s. The race of gods, தே வசாதி. 2. (சது.) A temple, கோயில். தேவகூத்தியர், s. (plu.) Courtesans of the gods of Swerga, தேவகணிகையர். தேவகோட்டை, s. Name of a town in the Madura District, the principal residence of நாட்டுக்கொட்டையார். தேவக்கிரியை, s. The providence of God, தெய்வச்செயல். 2. One of the thirtytwo tunes in singing. See இராகம். தேவசபை, s. The divine presence, &c., as தேவசமூகம். 2. The assembly in the temple. See சபை. தேவசமூகம், s. Divine presence, the presence of a deity, idol, &c., spoken in reverence of the interior of a temple. தேவசன்னிதானம்--தேவசன்னிதி, s. The divine presence. 2. A temple as the abode of a deity. See திருமுன். தேவசாயுச்சியம், s. Beatification. See சாயுச்சியம். தேவசாட்சி, s. An oath, ஆணை. (சது.) தேவசித்தம், s. Divine will. See திரு வுளம். தேவசிந்தனை, s. Divine meditation. See சிந்தனை. தேவசீகிருதம், s. That which belongs to God, தேவசம்பந்தமுடையது, (Beschi.) தேவசுபாவம், s. Nature, attributes, qualities of the Deity. தேவசேவை, s. Attendance at the temple, ministering to and worshipping the idol, தெய்வஊழியம். 2. Having the appearance of the deity, his vision, his form, &c., தெய்வதரிசனம். தேவசேனாதிபதி, s. Skanda, as general of the Devas in the expedition against the Asuras, கந்தன். தேவடியாள், s. A dancing woman of the temple. (c.) See தேவதாசி. தேவடியாள்மகன், s. A bestard; spoken in contempt. தேவதச்சன்--தெய்வத்தச்சன், s. The architect of the gods, Visvakarma, விச் சுவகர்மன். தேவதத்துவம், s. Divine power. தேவதரு, s. See தேவதாரம். தேவதலம்--தேவஸ்தலம்--தேவஸ்தா னம், s. A sacred shrine, a temple, &c., கோயில். தேவதாசன், s. A devotee, a servant of a deity, தொய்வத்தொண்டன். 2. The son of Arichandra, one of the six monarchs of India, அரிச்சந்திரன்மகன். தேவதாசி, s. (St.) A dancing and singing girl of a temple, commonly a courtesan, தேவடியாள்.--Note. The courtesans of the gods are உருவசி, மேனகை, திலோத்தமை and அரம்பை. தேவதாரம், s. Any of the five famous trees in Swerga, ஐந்தருவிலொன்று. 2. A medicinal, fragrant tree, செம்புளிச்சை. 3. A kind of pine tree, ஓர்மரம், Erythroxylon aureolatum, L. தேவதாரி--தேவதாரு, s. A kind of pine tree, as தேவதாரம். 3. தேவதாருவனம், s. A forest celebrated in the Skanda Purana, in which fortyeight thousand Rishis resided. தேவதாளி, s. A kind of plant, a Convolvulus, a kitchen herb, ஓர்பூண்டு. தேவதுந்துமி, s. The drums of the gods, தெய்வப்பறை. தேவதூஷகன்--தேவதூஷணக்காரன், s. A blasphemer, one who reviles God, or sacred things. தேவதூஷணம், s. Blasphemy. தேவதூதன், s. [fem. தேவதூதி.] A divine messenger. 2. [in Chirs. usage.] An angel. See தூதன். தேவதேவன், s. Deity, the Suprems Being--applied by each one to the object of his higest worship. தேவஸ்தானம், s. See தேவதலம். தேவஸ்திரி, s. Divine females of Swerga. தேவத்தொண்டு, s. Service to a deity, temple, &c., திருப்பணி. தேவத்தொண்டன், s. A devotee, as தே வதாசன். தேவத்தன்மை, s. Divine nature. தேவத்துவம், s. Divinity; as தெய் வத்துவம். தேவநகர், s. A temple, கோயில். (சது.) 2. The city of the gods, தேவர்நகரம். தேவநாகரம், s. [sometimes தேவநாகரி.] The Nagari character of the Sanscrit language, சமுஸ்கிருதத்தோர்வகையட்சரம். தேவநாயகன், s. The Supreme Being, கடவுள். 2. Any superior deity, தேவர்த லைவன். தேவநாயகன்பட்டணம், s. A town near Cuddalore. தேவநிலம், s. The proper site of a house determined by divination, being one-sixth of a square plot divided and apportioned to the several deities. லதேவநீதி, s. Divine justice. தேவபதம், s. Heaven, the firmament, ஆகாயம். 2. Royal presence, இராசசமுகம். தேவபதி--தேவராசன், s. Indra, இந்தி ரன். தேவபாடை--தேவபாஷை, s. The Sanscrit language as that of the celestials, சமுஸ்கிருதம். தேவபூசை, s. Puja as offered to an idol. தேவபூமி, s. The region or mansion where the gods dwell, தேவர்வாழிடம். தேவபோதனை, s. Divine instruction. தேவப்பிறப்பு, s. A birth entitling a soul to the rank of a god. See தெய் வப்பிறப்பு. தேவப்பிரமா, s. A name of the Muni Narada, நாரதன். தேவப்பிராமணன், s. A divine Brahman. தேவயோனி, s. Divine birth or origin, தெய்வப்பிறப்பு. (p.) தேவரூபி, s. [also தேவசொரூபி.] A divine person, as தேவதாசொரூபி. தேவப்பெண், s. A goddess. தேவமாதா--தேவமாதுரு, s. Mother of the gods, as அதிதி. 2. [R. C. usage.] The Virgin Mary, கன்னிமரியாள். தேவயத்தினம், s. [sometimes தேவேத் தினம்.] Divine providence. தேவயாத்திரை, s. A pilgrimage to some fane. 2. An idol procession. தேவயானம்--தேவரதம், s. (St.) A car or vehicle of a god, திவ்வியவிமானம். தேவயானி, s. (St.) Daughter of சுக்கி ரன், teacher the Asuras, சுக்கிரன்புத்திரி. தேவரம்பை, s. Females of Swerga, தெய்வப்பெண். 2. One of the courtesans of the gods, தேவதாசிகளிலொருத்தி. தேவரனுசரிப்பு, s. Supplication (R.) தேவராசன், s. Indra, இந்திரன். தேவராதன், s. A king of Mit'hila. தேவராளன், s. [fem. தேவராட்டி.] One supposed to be possessed so as to utter oracles. சன்னதக்காரன். தேவரிஷி, s. A Rishi of the celestial class. தேவரீர், Your lordship, (2d person plu. of a symbolic verb.] தேவருணவு--தேவரூண், தேவவுணவு, s. Nectar, ambrosia, amrita, அமுதம். தேவர்--தேவர்கள், s. [pl. of தேவன்.] Gods, celestials, deities, objects of worship, gods of Swerga or any other inferior class, சுரர். 2. Honorable persons, as a guru or priest, உயர்ந்தோர்.--Note. According to the Saiva sect the superior gods, or forms of the first order assumed by the Deity are five, viz.: 1. Brahma, பிரமா. 2. Vishnu, விட்டுணு. 3. Rudra or Siva, உருத்திரன். 4. Mayesvara, மயேச்சுரன். 5. Sathasiva, சதாசிவன், These are called, பஞ்சமூர்த்திகள்; the five Murtis, or பஞ்சகர்த்தாக்கள்; five lords. தேவர்கோயில், s. A temple, தேவால யம். தேவர்கோன்--தேவேந்திரன், s. Indra. தேவர்க்காடல், v. noun. Demoniac possession, dancing after certain sacrifices to devils, as சன்னதம், which see. தேவர்வகை, s. The gods of Swerga, 33,,, are divided into four classes, with a chief for each கோடி, or 1,,, as follows. 1.துவாதசாதித்தர், the twelve Adityas. ஆதித்தர், (lit.) the twelve suns, chiefs of their class numbering with them, 12,,, 2. ஏகாதசருத்திரர், the eleven Rudras. உருத்திரர், lords of their companies. comprising in all, 11,,, 3. அஷ்டவசுக்கள், the eight Vasus. their classes, including themselves, containing 8,,. 4. மருத்துவர், the two Asvinis, அச்சுவினிகள், the two physicians, the whole class being 2,,. தேவலகன், s. A brahman who attends on an idol, அர்ச்சகப்பிராமணன். W. p. 423. DEVALAKA. தேவலோகம், s. World of the gods, Swerga, the third of the secven upper worlds, of which Indra is king, the lowest heaven of mortals, who assume the form of gods for a residence in it. The enjoyments are all sensual, and the period of their continuance depends on the merit of the persons while on earth. When this is exhausted, they return for another period of probation; or go to a place of suffering for the expiration of previous demerit. This is the only heaven presented to the hope of the multitude, and generally the highest bliss they anticipate, சுவர் க்கம். தேவவசனம்--தேவவாக்கு, s. The word of God, the divine, word, கடவுள்வாக்கு. தேவவசீகரம், s. [R. Cathol. usage] Transubstantiation. See வசீகரணம். தேவவருஷம்--தேவவருடம், s. A year of the gods. See தேவாண்டு. தேவவிரதன், s. (St.) Bishma, வீடுமன். 2. A pious or religious person, கடவுளைவழி படுவோன். W. p. 434. DEVAVRUTA. தேவவிருட்சம், s. Any of the five species of trees in Swerga, பஞ்சதரு. W. p. 424. DEVAVRUKSHA. தேவவெளிப்படுத்தல், s. (Chirs. usage.) Divine revelation. தேவவைத்தியம், s. Superior medical preparations requiring a knowledge of chemistry, and regarded as of divine origin. See வைத்தியம். தேவன், s. A Deity, a god, a divine being, கடவுள். W. p. 421. DEVA. 2. A title given to அகம்படியர் caste. 3. A title given to some among Maravars. 4. (சது.) The name of Argha, அருகன். தேவாங்கம், s. Silk cloth, பட்டுச்சீலை. தேவாசனம், s. [in chris. usage.] The throne of god, an altar, கடவுளிருக்கை. தேவாசுவம்--தேவாஸ்வம், s. The horse of Indra, இந்திரன்பரி; [ex அசுவம்.] தேவாண்டு--தேவஆண்டு, s. A year of the gods of Swerga, being three hundred and sixty-five yaers of mortals, திவ்வியவருஷம். தேவாதாயம்--தேவதாயம், s. Allowance for the support of heathen temples. தேவாதி, s. God, கடவுள், (சது.) தேவாதிதேவன், s. The God of gods. தேவாதியர், s. [com.தேவாதிகள்.] The gods of Swerga and other celestials. தேவாதீனம், s. Properties, peculiar rights, prerogative, &c., of a deity. 2. Divine providence. See தெய்வாதீனம். தேவாத்திரம்--தேவாஸ்திரம், s. A divine missile-weapon from the gods. தேவாமிர்தம்--தேவாமுதம், s. The ambrosia of the gods, the food of immortality, தேவருணவு. தேவாரம், s. Divine praises, songs, &c., chanted by an assistant of the priest others, after the performance of the puja in the Saiva temples. They were made by the three celebrated servants of Siva, அப்பர், சம்பந்தர் and சுந்தரர், and are called the Tamil Vedas, being considered divine. தேவாலயம், s. A temple, a place of worship, any sacred shrine, கோயில். W. p. 424. DEVALAYA. 2. (சது.) The golden mountain Naha Meru, as the favorite resort of the gods, மேருகிரி. See ஆலயம். தேவாலயத்தினுடைமை, s. Temple property, கோயிற்சொத்து. தேவானுட்டிப்பு, v. noun. Religious practice, duties, exercise, worship, &c., [ex அனுஷ்டிப்பு, observance.] தேவி, s. A goddess. 2. Parvati, பார் வதி. 3. Durga, துர்க்கை. 4. Kali. காளி. 5. A queen, the wife of a prince, or nobleman, a term of respect to a married women, சீமாட்டி. 6. A wife, மனைவி--as அண்ணன்தேவி. elder brother's wife. தேவிகோட்டம், s. Any temple of Kali. காளிகோயில்; [ex கோட்டம்.] 2. A town, ஓ ரூர். W. p. 424. DEVIKOD'D'A. தேவிபட்டனம், s. The town of Devipatam, ஓரூர். தேவீகம்--தேவிகம், s. [com தெய்வீ கம். Divinity. தேவேந்திரன், s. Indra, இந்திரன். தேவோக்கித்தம்--தேவோக்தம், s. Divine revelation, தேவவெளிப்படுத்தல்; [ex Sa. Ukta, spoken. (Beschi.) தேவோத்தியானம், s.
