ilakkumi (p. 53) --இலட்சுமி, s. Lukshmi the goddess, wife of Vishnu, திருமகள். 2. (fig.) Fortune, செல்வம். Wils. p. 713. LAKSHMEE.--Note. இழி
iẕi (p. 55) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. n. To descend, dismount, sink, fall into, to be involved in, இறங்க. 2. To be degraded, disgraced, to degenerate, to be reduced in character, estimation, rank or circumstances, இழிவுபட. 3. To fall below mediocrity, to be inferior, to be below in comparison, தாழ. இழிகடை, s. [vul.] The meanest, lowest, most degraded, மிகவிழிந்தது. (Abusively.) அவனொரு இழிகடை. He is a low wretch. இழிகண், s. Inflammation of the eyes causing the lids to droop, இழிந்தகண். இழிகுலத்தோர், s. Low caste people, கீழ்மக்கள். இழிசனர், s. Persons of low caste, illiterate or ill-bred people, கீழ்மக்கள். இழிசனர்வார்த்தை, s. The vulgar dialect. இழிசொல், s. Disgraceful or improper language, பழிச்சொல், of which four kinds are enumerated, viz.: 1. கோள் --குறளை, an invidious or injurious report, tale bearing, aspersion, slander, backbiting. 2. பொய்மொழி, lying, falsehood. 3. கடுஞ்சொல், harsh expressions, irritating language, scolding. 4. பயனில்சொல், nonsense, idle talk, vain expressions. 2. A vulgar word, இழிவானசொல். இழிஞர், s. Low caste people, the vulgar, the wretched, the miserable, debased, ignoble persons, சண்டாளர். இழிதகவு, v. noun. Inferiority, baseness, disgrace, degradation, meanness, இழிவு. 2. s. Poverty, destitution, எளிமை. இழிதிணை, s. The inferior class. See திணை. இழிந்தோர், s. The vulgar, the illiterate, low-bred persons, தாழ்ந்தோர். இழிபு, v. noun. Lowness, inferiority, meanness, degradation, baseness, தாழ்வு. 2. A hollow or ditch, any hole or cavity, depressions in land, பள்ளம். வெள்ளைக்கிழிபு, s. The less or minor species of வெண்பா verse. இழிவு, v. noun. Inferiority, lowness in rank or character, meanness, baseness, தாழ்வு. 2. Contempt, disgrace, dishonor, ignominy, abjectness, wretchedness, abasement, நிந்தை. 3. Diminution, decrease, a diminished quantity, deficiency, குறைவு. 4. A hollow or cavity, பள்ளம். 5. Decay, ruin, destruction, கேடு. 6. Fault, blemish, deviation from rule, misdemeanor, குற்றம். இழிவறிந்துண்பான். One who eats knowing the advantages of a spare diet. இழிவுபட, inf. To grow mean, base, vile, to deteriorate, be in disgrace, to be degraded, ஈனப்பட. இழிவுபடுத்த, inf. v. a. To degrade, disgrace, deteriorate, debase, தாழ்வுபடுத்த. இழிவுபண்ண, inf. உண்டி
uṇṭi (p. 59) s. Food, sustenance, eatables, உணவு. 2. Boiled rice, சோறு. 3. The food of carnivorous animals, இரை. (நிகண்டு and திவாகரம்.) 4. (பாரதிதீ.) The food of birds and beasts in general, பற வைவிலங்கிவற்றினுணவு. Four kinds of eating are enumerated, viz.: 1. உண்டல், eating without mastication--as boiled rice, &c. 2. தின்றல், masticating, chewing--as meat, curries, &c. 3. நக்கல், licking--as honey, molasses, lapping. 4. பருகல், drinking, sucking--as a child. Sometimes a fifth is added, viz.: மென்றல், chewing--as spices, pungents, leaves, &c. kept in the mouth. உண்டிசுருங்குதல்பெண்டிர்க்கழகு. It is becoming in a woman to eat little. பேருண்டி, s. upāyam (p. 62) s. Means, contrivance, expedient, device, good or bad, skill in accomplishing an object, சூழ்ச்சி. 2. Stratagem, artifice, craft, shift, art, cunning, shuffling, intrigue, தந்திரம். 3. The means for bringing an enemy to terms, of which four are enumerated, viz.: 1. சாமம், conciliatory measures. 2. பேதம், sowing dissension. 3. தானம், gifts, presents. 4. தண் டம், chastisement, punishment (by war), அரசர்க்குரியவுபாயம். 4. [vul.] Smallness, சொ ற்பம். Wils. p. 16. UPAYA. உபாயக்காரன்--உபாயி, s. An artful person, a schemer, contriver, தந்திரக்காரன். உபாயஞ்சூழ, inf. To contrive, scheme. உபாயஞ்சொல்ல, inf. To give counsel. உபாயதந்திரம், s. Devices, craftiness, subtility. உபாயமானவிளையாட்டு, s. Artful cheating in play. உபாயம்பண்ண, inf. [in rhetoric.] Artfully endeavoring to prevent an act, by representing the evil which will happen to one's self--as when a wife dissuades her husband from leaving her by declaring that, in case he does, she must die, ஓரலங்காரம். உபாயோபாயம், s. uṟuppu (p. 68) s. A limb, or member of the body, parts, features, அவயவம். 2. Body, உடல். 3. Part (of a whole) component part, member, subdivision, department, section, பங்கு. 4. Just proportion, symmetry, அங்கலட்சணம். 5. Abundance, மிகுதி. 6. Bough, மரக்கொம்பு. 7. Closeness, narrowness, நெருக்கம். 8. A copy of single letters set for a child to imitate, மேல்வரிச்ச ட்டம். 9. Title deed, registry, &c. of land, காணியாட்சிப்பத்திரம். அந்தக்காணிக்கோருறுப்புமில்லை. There is no security, title, &c. for that land. உறுப்படக்கி, s. A tortoise, a turtle --from the contraction of its limbs, ஆமை; [ex உறுப்பு, et அடக்கி, from அடங்கு contraction.] உறுப்பணங்கெட்டவன். [prop. உ றுப்பினங்கெட்டவன்.] An ill-shaped, maimed, ugly person. 2. (Rott.) உறுப்பினங் கெட்டவன், A foolish, a witless fellow. உறுப்பற்றவன்--உறுப்புக்குறைந்த வன். An ill-formed, or deformed person, அவயவவீனன். 2. An ill-bred person. ஒழுக்கமில்லான். உறுப்பில்பிண்டம், s. The embryo. See எச்சம. உறுப்புக்குறைவிசேடம், s. [in rhetoric.] A species of the figure called விசேடம். உறுப்புத்தோல், s. A species of deer-skin which, according to the shasters, the Brahman should fasten to his sacred cord, நூலிற்கட்டியமான்றோல். உறுப்புநலனழிதல், v. noun. Decaying or withering--as the beauty of a female, on account of the absence of her lover, அங்கத்தழகுகெடுதல். உறுப்புமயக்கம், s. A prodigy, a monster, one whose limbs are redundant, defective, &c. See எச்சம். உறுப்புள்ளவன், s. A vigorous, well-formed man, அங்கலட்சணமுடையவன். 2. A man of enterprising character, qualified for business, திறமையுடையான். 3. A man of good conduct, அறத்துறுப்புடை யான். 4. A man of good manners, ஒழுக்கமுள்ளவன். காணிக்குறுப்புப்பண்ண, inf. To get a title deed passed for land. அகத்துறுப்பு, s. The constituent parts of virtue; they are eight in number. 1. ஐயப்படாமை, Freedom from doubt and uncertainty. 2. விருப்பின்மை, Liberation from the desires of the senses. 3. வெ றுப்பின்மை, Freedom from antipathy, prejudice, &c. 4. Exemption from illusion, confusion of mind, error, ignorance, &c. 5. பழியைநீக்கல், Freedom from evils. 6. அழி ந்தோரைநிறுத்தல், Restoring the ruined or apostate. 7. அறம்விளக்கல், Expounding or elucidating the nature of virtue. 8. பேரன்புடைமை, Great kindness, or benevolence to all sentient creatures. நூலுறுப்பு, s. One of the members or component parts of a treatise. மதிலுறுப்பு, s. The component parts of a fortification. திருவுறுப்பு, s. A jewel worn by bridegrooms upon their foreheads--a sign of the goddess இலக்குமி. செய்யுளுறுப்பு, s. The constituent parts or elements of poetry, as given in காரிகை, they are six, viz.: 1. எழுத்து, Letters forming thirteen classes. 2. அசை, Metrical syllables of two kinds. 3. சீர், Metrical feet of thirty kinds. (See. சீர்.) 4. தளை, Combination of feet one with another, of seven kinds. 5. அடி, Metrical lines determined by the number of feet of which they are composed, five kinds are given. 6. தொடை, Rhyme, forty-three species are enumerated. சீட்டினுறுப்பு, s. The style or different parts of a writ, or deed, &c. 5)

There are eighteen kinds of rats; i. e. கத்திரிமணியன், செம்மூக்கன், வள்ளி, குறட்டை, கருங்காற்றலையன், விடவெலி, செந்தலைமுத்தி, செவ்வெலி, வீங்கெலி, உலர்ப்பெலி, தூங்கெலி, புடையெலி, இரைப்பெலி, செங்கண்ணன், புள்ளி, கரடன், குறுங்காலெலி, நச் செலி; some others are enumerated--as கா ரெலி, நீரெலி, வெள்ளெலி, முள்ளெலி, சுண்டெலி, வரப்பெலி and புள்ளெலி. எலிச்செவி, s. An herb, rat's ear, சவரியார்கூந்தல், Evolvulus emarginatus, L. எலித்திசை, s. [in astrology.] The north west point of the compass-opposite to பூனைத்திசை, வடமேற்கு. kalai (p. 96) s. A digit or one-sixteenth of the moon's diameter, a phasis, சந்திரன்பங்கு. 2. A minute portion of time equal to thirty காட்டை, or about eight seconds,காலநுட்பம். 3. The sixtieth part of a பாகை, or of onethirtieth of a zodiacal sign or one Indian hour, ஓர்பாகையிலறுபதிலொன்று. Wils. p. 2. KALA. 4. A specific power of any of the superior deities as manifested in an incarnation, or in the assumption of a form, human or other for any specific purpose, the manifestation of a deity, forms of the female energy of deity as they appear in nature, வித்தியாதத்துவமேழிலொன்று. 5. [in contempt.] To be cashiered, degraded, to lose office, decrease--as prosperity. கலைக்கொம்பு, s. Stag's horn--also called கலங்கொம்பு. கலைஞர், s. Poets, bards, philosophers, the literati, புலவர். கலைஞானம், s. Philosophy, literature, universal knowledge, கல்வியுணர்வு. 2. The arts and sciences, being sixty four, viz.: 1. அக்கரவிலக்கணம், the knowledge of spelling and reading, orthography, the science of reading. 2. இலி கிதம், caligraphy, penmanship. 3. கணி தம், the art of computation, arithmetic, the science of numbers. 4. வேதம், the Hindu Veda or law. 5. புராணம், a class of sacred books comprising the whole body of Hindu theology. 6. வியாகரணம், grammar. 7. நீதிசாத்திரம், jurisprudence. 8. சோதிடசாத்திரம், astronomy, including astroloy. 9. தருமசாத்திரம், ethics, moral philosophy, code of laws. 1. யோகசாத் திரம், the knowledge of abstract or silent devotion, rules for religious and abstract meditations. 11. மந்திரசாத்திரம், A division of the Vedas in the first practical part; it includes prayers and hymns addressed to particular deities and used at particular sacrifices, and it also comprehends incantations in religion. magic, medicine, and every other art or practice in which enchantments are used. 12. சகுணசாத்திரம், the science of prognosticating by omens and augury. 13. சிற்ப சாத்திரம், architecture and mechanics, symmetry, shapes in general including sculpture, painting features, lines, hair, &c., of the human system, and their various effects on life. 14.வைத்தியசாத்திரம், science of healing, physic, pharmacy and surgery which may include restoration to life of the dead, the reunion of severed limbs. &c. 15. உருவசாத்திரம், physiognomy, the art of discovering the temper and foreknowing the fortune by the features of the face, metoposcopy, chiromancy, the art of foretelling the events of life by inspecting the hand, சாமுத்திரிகம். 16. இதிகாசம், history, traditional accounts of former events, heroic history--as found in the Bharata and Ramayana. 17. காவியம், epic poetry --as சிந்தாமணி, நைடதம், &c. 18. அலங்காரம், science of rhetoric. 19. மதுரபாடணம், eloquence. 2. நாடகம், dramatic science. 21. நிருத்தம், the art of dancing. 22. சத்தப் பிரமம், directions for the modulation of sounds. 23. வீணை, the art of playing on the lute or stringed instruments. 24. வேணு. the art of playing on the flute or pipe. 25. மிருதங்கம், the art of beating the tambourine. 26. தாளம், the art of beating the cymbals. 27. அத்திரபரிட்சை, archery, the art of throwing darts. 28. கனகபரிட்சை, the art of an assayer in gold, &c. 29. இரதபரிட்சை, the art of driving chariots, charioteering. 3. கசபரிட்சை, the knowledge of the marks of an elephant. 31. அசுவபரிட்சை, the knowledge of the marks of a horse. 32. இரத் தினபரிட்சை, the art of examining and choosing gems, knowledge of precious stones. 33. பூமிபரிட்சை, the knowledge of the different kinds of soil, rules for determining by the surface, the nature and depth of soils, underneath which water is to be found, &c. 34. சங்கிராமவி லக்கணம், military art, tactics. 35. மல்ல யுத்தம், wrestling, pugilism, gymnastics, athletic art, boxing. 36. ஆகருடணம், the art of calling or summoning by enchantment. 37. உச்சாடணம், exorcism, dislodging devils or exciting them to injure others. 38. வித்துவேடணம், exciting hatred between parties by magical spells-one of the eight performances of enchantment. 39. மதனசாத்திரம், erotics, modus coeundi. 4. மோகனம், libidinous fascinations occasioned by enchantment. 41. வசீகரணம், the art of subduction by magic, the art of bringing one over to another's side or interest by enchant ment. 42. இரசவாதம், alchymy and chemistry. 43. காந்தருவவாதம் the knowledge of the condition of the celestial choristers. 44. பைபீலவாதம், the language of brute creatures from emmets upwards. 45. கவுத்துகவாதம், the art of restoring pleasure to a sorrowful mind. 46. தாதுவாதம், the knowledge of the pulse. 47. காரூடம். charms, incantations against poison. 48. நட்டம், information respecting any thing lost obtained by astronomical calculations. 49. முட்டி, information respecting any thing concealed in the palms of the hand (lit. in the fist.) 5. ஆகாயப்பிரவேசம், the art of entering into the air and becoming invisible. 51. ஆகாயமனம், the art of walking in the air. 52. பரகாயப்பிரவேசம், the power of leaving one's own body and entering another lifeless body or substance at pleasure. 53. அதிரிசயம், the power of making one's self invisible. 54. இந்திரசாலம், the art of conjuring, juggling, &c. 55. மகேந்திர சாலம், the art of performing wonders in heaven and earth. 56. அக்கினித்தம்பம், restraining the action of fire. 57. சலத் தம்பம், The art of counteracting the yielding quality of water so as to be able to walk on its surface. 58. வாயுத்தம்பம், the art of restraining the power of the wind. 59. திட்டித்தம்பம், the art of fascinating the eyes. 6. வாக்குத்தம்பம், the art of fascinating the mouth. 61. சுக்கிலத் தம்பம், the art of restraining the semen virile. 62. கனனத்தம்பம், the art of preventing the discovery of things concealed. 63. கட்கத்தம்பம், the art by which the power of sword or any other weapon is nullified. 64. அவத்தைப்பிர யோகம், the power of stationing the soul at pleasure, in any of the five stages in full energy by virtue of abstract devotion for converse with the deity. capai (p. 160) s. A hall of assembly, a public hall; especially the halls in the temple at Chillumbram (சிதம்பரம்), மண்டபம்,--Note. Five apartments are enumerated in which Siva is said to manifest himself--as கனக சபை, சித்திரசபை, சிற்சபை, தேவசபை, நிருத்தசபை, which see. 2. (c.) An assembly, a meeting, congregation, company, அவை. 3. Society, an association, a conclave, கூட்டம். 4. An assembly of the learned, the literati, புலவர் சபை. W. p. 893. SABHA'. 5. [in Christian usage.], a select society of believers--as திருச்சபை.--Note. This word retains its Sanscrit pronunciation in the Sanscrit compounds. சபாகம்பம், s. The pillar which supports the hall of an assembly. (R.) சபாபதி--சபாநாதன்--சபாநாயகன், s. The president of an assembly, சபைக்கிறை வன். 2. Siva--as god of the sacred halls at சிதம்பரம், சிவன். சபாமண்டபம், s. A public hall, assembly room. சாபாரஞ்சிதம், s. Pleasing manners, சபைக்கிதமானதன்மை; [ex இரஞ்சிதம், pleasantness.] சபைகூட, inf. To assemble, as a society or company. சபைக்கட்டு, s. [in Christian usage.] The established rules of the church. (c.) சபைக்கோழை, s. [com. சவைக்கோ ழை.] Bashfulness in company. [among Christians.] Church-members, திருச்சபையார். சபையிருத்த, inf. To seat a company properly according to their respective rank, to keep them in order, &c. (Little used.) சபையிலிருந்துதள்ள--சபைக்குப்புறம் பாக்க, inf. To exclude or reject from society, to excommunicate. சபையேற, inf. To come before an assembly, to appear--as a performer, &c. 2. To join or mix in society. சபையேறினவன், s. A person accustomed to society. 2. A person of good manners, free from rusticity, &c. சபையுள்ளார், s. The chorus, or the chief singers, in a play, கூத்தாடிகட்கு உதவி யாய்ப்படிப்போர். (p.) சபைவளமை--சபைவண்மை, s. The authority or public acts of an assembly, சபையதிகாரம். (R.) சபையேற்ற, inf. To crowd, muster, cluster, or collect together, fill with things, நிரப்ப. (c.) 3. To enumerate, say, declare, தனி தனியாய்ச்சொல்ல. 4. To sound, ஒலிக்க. 5. மிலேச்சம்
milēccam (p. 354) s. A country to the North of the Saraswati river in the neighborhood of Delhi, சரச்சுவதியாற்றின்வடதேசம். (சது.) மிலேச்சசாதிகள், s. Barbarous nations, foreigners. The tribes enumerated under this head by Menu, appear to be principally the inhabitants of the countries bordering on India, north and south; especially those adjacent to Bengal and Behar, and on the Southern part of the Coromandel coast, which are severally called Paundrakas, O'dras (Uriyas), and Draviras; also the Cambojas; Yavanas (Greeks or Bactrians); Sakas; Paravas; Pahlavas (ancient Persians); Chinese; Kiratas, generally mountaineers; Deradas (Darad&ae;) and K'hasas (Scuthi). W. p. 677.--Note. The term is now applied, more especially, to Europeans, and those from any remote country. மிலேச்சதேசம்--மிலேச்சமண்டலம், s. A foreign country, a country on the borders of India.--According to Wills. any country where the black antelope is not found. மிலேச்சத்தனம், s. Clownishness, barbarism. மிலேச்சன், s. [fem. மிலேச்சி, மிலேச் சஸ்திரீ.] A barbarian, one of a foreign tribe, of a foreign religion, customs, &c., கண்டகன்.-- According to Wils. one speaking any language but Sanskrit, and not subject to the usual Hindu institutions. 2. A weak man, simpleton, dunce, dolt, பேதையன். 3. A clown, clodhopper, மடையன்.

yamakam (p. 370) s. A species of alliteration, the repetition of words or syllables of like sound but varying in sense, in the different parts of a stanza, as at the beginning, middle or end of each hemistich. Ten varieties are enumerated. W. p. 681. YAMAKA.
