A marriageable girl. வல்லமையறிவோம். We will find out which is the most competent, (by way of bravado.) தன்னையறியுமறிவேயறிவாகும் பின்னையறிவது பேயறி வாமே. To know one's self is knowledge, other knowledge is inferior. அறிகருவி, s. The organs of sense. அறிகுறி, s. A sign, mark, token, symbol. அறிஞன், s. A kind of sleep or meditation, in which the person understands all that passes about him--an attribute supposed to belong to the gods and sages, especially to Vishnu. அறிதுயிலமர்ந்தமூர்த்தி, s. Vishnu, திருமால். அறிமடம், s. Indisposition to reduce to practice what is learned. 2. Inability to recall to memory, stupidity in learned persons from infatuation. 3. Feigned ignorance. அறிமுகம், s. Acquaintance with persons (and in vulgar use) with things, slight familiarity. அறியக்கொடுக்க, inf. To inform against one, indict, impeach. 2. To communicate information, instruction, &c. அறியாமை, neg. v. noun. Ignorance. அறியாவினா, s. One of the six forms of interrogation--as when one asks for information. அறியொண்ணாமை, neg. v. noun. A contracted form of the negative gerund, எதிர்மறை வினையெச்சவிகுதி--as உண்ணா வந்தான்; for உண்ணாமல்வந்தான், he came, not having eaten. 12. A contracted form of the neg. rel. participle, எதிர்மறைப்பெயரெச்ச விகுதி--as ஓடாக்குதிரை, for ஓடாதகுதிரை, a horse that will not run. 13. A poetic form of the gerund, வினையெச்சவிகுதி--as பாராவணங்காமகிழ்ந்தான், he saw, worshipped and rejoiced;--பாராவணங்கா for பார்த்துவண ங்கி. 14. A neg. particle which may be expressed or understood before the termination of any verb except the neut. plural--as நடவாதான், he will not walk; நட வாய், you will not walk, &c. 15. A poetic contraction of ஆறு, way or manner--as, யான்வந்தவாசென்றியம்புதியேல், if you will go and give information of my arrival. 16. A poetic name of the ஆச்சாமரம். 17. One of the letters on which to exercise the voice in singing, running through the notes of the octave--a musical mode, இசையிலோசை. 18. A prefix to Sanscrit words--as, ஆகன் னம், ஆசட்சு. ஆ கெட்டேன். Ah! I am undone. ஆ கொடுப்பாய். Oh! thou wouldst give thyself--i. e. thyself and thy family--to Yama the god of death; [vul.] generally used by women. ஆதீண்டுகுற்றி--ஆவுரிஞ்சுதறி, s. ār (p. 41) . Who, the interrogative pronoun common to both numbers and all persons, in the rational class, though properly the third person plural--contracted from யாவர் or யார். (c.) நீயார்? Who art thou? அவரார்? Who is he?--Note. When உம் is added to ஆர், it implies all, and with a negative, none--as யாரும், all, யாருமில்லை, no one--also when it is doubled, it is used distributively--as ஆராருக்குக் கொடுத் தான்? To whom did he give? 51)

iracam (p. 48) s. Flavor, relish; what is tasteful, agreeable, palatable, delicious; taste in general, good or bad--also the six flavors. (See சுவை.) 2. Sweetness, இனிமை. 3. Sweet juice of fruits, &c., vegetable juice in general, சாறு. 4. Mercury, quicksilver, hydrargyrum, பாதரசம். 5. (p.) One of the juices of the body, சத்ததாதுவினொன்று. (See தாது.) It corresponds more with chyle than any other, but probably it is fanciful. 6. Pepper-water made of several ingredients, மிளகுநீர். 7. [in rhetoric.] The passions or emotions of the mind expressed by gesture, exhibited in action and transferred to poetry, வீரமுதலியவெண்சுவை. Of these eight are given; viz.: 1. வீரம் or வீரியம், courage. 2. அச்சம், பயம், or பயானகம், fear, terror. 3. இழிப்பு, விபற்சம், குற்சை, அருவரு ப்பு, abominating, loathing at or disgusting. 4. வியப்பு or அற்புதம், wonder, surprise, astonishment. 5. காமம், சிங்காரம், சிருங்காரம், love, sexual love. 6. அவலம் or கருணை, acute sensibility, weakness, tenderness, mercy, pity, clemency. 7. உருத்திரம், கோ பம், இரௌத்திரம், பெருங்கோபம், warlike fury, wrath, displeasure, rage. 8. நகை, பெரு நகை or ஆசியம், laughter, mirth, risibility, great or intense laughter, laughing in contempt. By some, சாந்தம், tranquillity, equanimity, peace, abstraction or the stoicism of the ascetics; and by others வற்சலம், parental tenderness are given as a ninth meaning; இரசம் is added at pleasure with the loss in some cases of its initial-as வீராசம், இழிப்பிரசம், &c. Wils. p. 697. RASA. இரசகந்தாயம், s. Tribute, the fatness of the earth. இரசகந்தாயமாய்ப்பேச, inf. To speak pleasingly. இரசகருப்பூரம், s. Muriate of mercury, ஓர்மருந்து. இரசகுண்டு, s. [prop. இரசக்குண் டு.] A globular glass filled with mercury as a decoration at weddings, &c., also as a charm. இரசகுளிகை--இரசமாத்திரை, s. A quick-silver pill employed in medicine, இரசத்தினாற்செய்தமாத்திரை. 2. [in alchemy.] A pill feigned to be used by a class of persons called சித்தர், now in the world of Indra, who thereby perform supernatural actions--as கமனஞ்செய்கை, or passing through the air to any desired place, சித்தர்குளிகை. இரசக்கட்டு, s. Condensed mercury, சூதக்கட்டு. இரசக்கிணறு--இரசக்குழி, s. A pit or mine where quick-silver is obtained. இரசக்குடுக்கை, s. A little bottle of mercury. இரசசிந்தூரம், s. RASAB'HASMAN. இரசபாஷாணம், s. A kind of prepared arsenic. இரசப்பிரீதி--இரசமாதா, s. One of the hundred-and-twenty kinds of arsenic in its natural state. இரசமணி, s. Hard globules of mercury prepared by incantations, &c., and worn as an amulet in order to prevent evil, cure diseases, to promote success in undertakings, &c. இரசமுறிக்க, inf. To prepare mercury for medicine. 2. To carry mercury off from the body. இரசலிங்கம், s. Vermilion, சாதி லிங்கம். 2. A case of mercury for a linga. இரசவாதம்--இரசவித்தை, s. Alchemy--one of the sixty-four கலைஞானம். இரசவாதம்பண்ண, inf. To practise the art of alchemy. இரசவாதி, s. An alchemist. இரசவாழை--இரதவாழை, s. [improp. இதரைவாழை.] A species of plantain, பேயன்வாழை. இரசவைப்பு, s. Any preparation from mercury--as a muriate, sulphate, &c., an amalgam. இரசனை, s. Flavor, deliciousness, sweetness, delicacy, சுவை. 2. The tongue, நாக்கு. 3. Juice, sap, essence, சாறு. இரசாதிபதி--இரசாதிபன், s. [in astrology.] The sun or one of the planets presiding over fruits, vegetables, &c., for the given years, இரசவஸ்துகட்கதி காரியாங்கிரகம். இரசாபாசம், A loss of flavor, or of juice. இரசேந்திரம், s. uṇr (p. 59) --உணரு, கிறேன், உணர்ந்தே ன், வேன், உணர, v. a. To be conscious, to feel mentally, to perceive, understand, comprehend, arrive at, or possess full and perfect knowledge, அறிய. 2. To discern, distinguish, பகுத்தறிய. 3. To think, reflect or consider, meditate, contemplate, நினைக்க. 4. To feel, perceive by the touch, பரிசித்தறிய. 5. To learn, acquire knowledge, கற்றறிய. 6. To become reconciled-as man and wife, be reunited after a love quarrel, ஊடறீர. 7. To become free from delusion, doubt, error, &c.--as in waking from sleep; recovering from languor; acquiring spiritual perception, &c., தெளிய. (p.) தெய்வப்புலவனுக்குநாவுணருஞ்சித்திரவோடாவிக்கு க்கையுணரும். The tongue of the inspired poet and the hand of the painter perform their functions intuitively. [prov.] உற்றுணரெங்களிலொருவன். One of us who have been initiated. (பாரதம்.) உணராமை, neg. v. noun. Stupor, want of perception, knowledge, feeling, &c., அறியாமை. 2. Insanity, intoxication, infatuation, bewilderment, உன்மத்தம். உணருமறிவு, s. Instinct, intuition. 2. Ready apprehension, cleverness. உணர்ந்தோர்--கற்றுணர்ந்தோர், s. The learned, persons of profound erudition, men of ability. உணர், v. noun. Feeling, perception, knowledge, intellect, உணர்வு. உணர்ச்சி, v. noun. Consciousness, feeling, intuition, perception, discernment, understanding, sensibility, knowledge, wisdom, judgment, experience, reason, learning, &c., acquiring knowledge, உணர்வு. என்காலிலேயுணர்ச்சியில்லை. My leg is devoid of feeling, affected by paralysis, &c. உணர்தல், v. noun. Being reconciled--as man and wife after a lovequarrel. ஊடலுணர்தல்புணர்தலிவைகாமங்கூடியார்பெற் றபயன். Disunion, reconciliation and the pleasures of love, those are the fruits of matrimony. (குறள்.) உணர்த்தி, s. [vul. prop. உணர்ச்சி.] Feeling. உணர்த்தியற்றவன், s. A man past feeling, one devoid of sensibility. உணர்த்தியுள்ளவன், s. A man of sensibility, one who is affected by the wants of others. உணர்வு, v. noun. Feeling, consciousness, intuition, perception, understanding, knowledge by means of the senses, உணர்கை. 2. Clear discernment, intellect, reason, தெளிவு. 3. Cessation from sleep, love quarrels, &c., ஊடலுந் துயிலுநீங்கல். 4. Acquiring of knowledge, learning, experience, acquaintance with science, &c., கற்றுணர்கை. 5. A sense, புலன். 6. Separation, நீங்கல். உணரவுணருமுணர்வுடையாரைப்புணரப்புணருமா மின்பம். To be united in friendship with the prudent who think of what they ought to think is productive of the highest felicity. (நாலடி.) உள்ளத்துணர்வுடையான். A man of great wisdom. உணர்வுகேடு, s. Forgetfulness, listlessness, inattention, உணர்ச்சியின்மை. 2. Want of understanding, அறிவீனம். நுண்ணுணர்வு, s. An acute perception. தேர்ந்தவுணர்வினன், s. A man of improved understanding. தளர்ந்தவுணர்வினன், s. A dull man, one slow of understanding. 114)

uṟukku (p. 67) கிறேன், உறுக்கினேன், வே ன், உறுக்க, v. a. To reprimand, chide, scold, reprove, rebuke, கடிந்துகொள்ள. 2. To meanace, denounce, threaten, either by words or gesture, பயமுறுத்த. 3. To speak with harshness, severity, anger, &c., குரூர மாய்ப்பேச. 4. (p.) To leap over, pass over, கடக்க. 5. To jump, குதிக்க. உறுக்கிக்கேட்க, inf. To interrogate in a threatening tone or manner. உறுக்கிச்சொல்ல, inf. To speak or declare with authority, to speak in a threatening tone. விரலாலுறுக்க, inf. To rebuke by raising or shaking the forefinger. உறுக்கல், v. noun. A jump, குதிப்பு. 2. s. Anger, கோபம். 3. Sign of anger, சினக்குறிப்பு. உறுக்கு--உறுக்காட்டம்--உறுக்கா ட்டியம், v. noun. Rebuking, threatening, severe reprimand, vehement command, உறுக்குதல். அவனுடையஉறுக்காட்டியத்தைப்பார். See how ostentatiously he rebukes. உறுக்காட்டியம்பண்ண, inf. To exercise authority, &c. 81)

uṟuppu (p. 68) s. A limb, or member of the body, parts, features, அவயவம். 2. Body, உடல். 3. Part (of a whole) component part, member, subdivision, department, section, பங்கு. 4. Just proportion, symmetry, அங்கலட்சணம். 5. Abundance, மிகுதி. 6. Bough, மரக்கொம்பு. 7. Closeness, narrowness, நெருக்கம். 8. A copy of single letters set for a child to imitate, மேல்வரிச்ச ட்டம். 9. Title deed, registry, &c. of land, காணியாட்சிப்பத்திரம். அந்தக்காணிக்கோருறுப்புமில்லை. There is no security, title, &c. for that land. உறுப்படக்கி, s. A tortoise, a turtle --from the contraction of its limbs, ஆமை; [ex உறுப்பு, et அடக்கி, from அடங்கு contraction.] உறுப்பணங்கெட்டவன். [prop. உ றுப்பினங்கெட்டவன்.] An ill-shaped, maimed, ugly person. 2. (Rott.) உறுப்பினங் கெட்டவன், A foolish, a witless fellow. உறுப்பற்றவன்--உறுப்புக்குறைந்த வன். An ill-formed, or deformed person, அவயவவீனன். 2. An ill-bred person. ஒழுக்கமில்லான். உறுப்பில்பிண்டம், s. The embryo. See எச்சம. உறுப்புக்குறைவிசேடம், s. [in rhetoric.] A species of the figure called விசேடம். உறுப்புத்தோல், s. A species of deer-skin which, according to the shasters, the Brahman should fasten to his sacred cord, நூலிற்கட்டியமான்றோல். உறுப்புநலனழிதல், v. noun. Decaying or withering--as the beauty of a female, on account of the absence of her lover, அங்கத்தழகுகெடுதல். உறுப்புமயக்கம், s. A prodigy, a monster, one whose limbs are redundant, defective, &c. See எச்சம். உறுப்புள்ளவன், s. A vigorous, well-formed man, அங்கலட்சணமுடையவன். 2. A man of enterprising character, qualified for business, திறமையுடையான். 3. A man of good conduct, அறத்துறுப்புடை யான். 4. A man of good manners, ஒழுக்கமுள்ளவன். காணிக்குறுப்புப்பண்ண, inf. To get a title deed passed for land. அகத்துறுப்பு, s. The constituent parts of virtue; they are eight in number. 1. ஐயப்படாமை, Freedom from doubt and uncertainty. 2. விருப்பின்மை, Liberation from the desires of the senses. 3. வெ றுப்பின்மை, Freedom from antipathy, prejudice, &c. 4. Exemption from illusion, confusion of mind, error, ignorance, &c. 5. பழியைநீக்கல், Freedom from evils. 6. அழி ந்தோரைநிறுத்தல், Restoring the ruined or apostate. 7. அறம்விளக்கல், Expounding or elucidating the nature of virtue. 8. பேரன்புடைமை, Great kindness, or benevolence to all sentient creatures. நூலுறுப்பு, s. One of the members or component parts of a treatise. மதிலுறுப்பு, s. The component parts of a fortification. திருவுறுப்பு, s. A jewel worn by bridegrooms upon their foreheads--a sign of the goddess இலக்குமி. செய்யுளுறுப்பு, s. The constituent parts or elements of poetry, as given in காரிகை, they are six, viz.: 1. எழுத்து, Letters forming thirteen classes. 2. அசை, Metrical syllables of two kinds. 3. சீர், Metrical feet of thirty kinds. (See. சீர்.) 4. தளை, Combination of feet one with another, of seven kinds. 5. அடி, Metrical lines determined by the number of feet of which they are composed, five kinds are given. 6. தொடை, Rhyme, forty-three species are enumerated. சீட்டினுறுப்பு, s. The style or different parts of a writ, or deed, &c. 5)

ūṉṟu (p. 72) கிறேன், ஊன்றினேன், வே ன், ஊன்ற, v. a. To plant, set, fix, place firmly, rest upon with pressure--as a pole in propelling, fixing a boat, a musket, a lever, &c., நிறுத்த. 2. To lay down premises in an argument, நியாயத்திற்குமூலத்தைஸ்தாபிக்க. 3. To grasp, hold, strike root as trees, gain a firm footing, become established in a place, இறுகப்பிடிக்க. 4. v. n. To lean upon, recline, or depend on a staff, a person, &c., சார. 5. To be steadfast, firm, intent upon, உறுதியாய்நிற்க. ஊன்றக்கொடுத்ததடியென்னுச்சியையுடைக்கிறது. The staff which I gave him to lean upon, breaks my head; i. e. the good I have done him has turned out evil. கையூன்றிக்கரணம்போடவேண்டும். To tumble, the hands must be fixed on the ground; i. e. nothing can be done without money, means, &c. மழையூன்றிப்பேய்கிறது. It rains hard or incessantly. மேகங்காலூன்றிமழைபெய்தது. The clouds resting on the horizon poured down torrents. நிலத்திற்சிக்கெனவூன்றியவேர். Roots stuck firmly in the ground. ஒத்தகடப்பாட்டிற்றாளுன்றியெய்து. Exerting themselves in their proper calling. ஊன்றக்கட்ட, inf. To edify, ratify. ஊன்றிக்கேட்க, inf. To interrogate with much emphasis, press for an answer, உறுதியாய்வினாவ. 2. To hear attentively, கருத்தாய்ச்செவிகொடுக்க. ஊன்றிக்கொள்ள inf. To gain a firm footing in a place, office, &c.; to establish one's self, நிலைபெற. 2. To lean or depend upon, சார்ந்திருக்க. ஊன்றிச்சொல்ல, inf. To speak, or pronounce with distinct articulation, உறுதியாய்ச்சொல்ல. ஊன்றித்தாங்க, inf. To press on a pole in stopping, or poling a boat, ஊன்றித்தள்ள. ஊன்றிநடக்க, inf. To walk cautiously, firmly, &c.--as on slippery ground. 2. To walk firmly as one regaining the use of his limbs. 3. To walk with a firm foot so as to secure a quick pace. கோலையூன்றிக்கொண்டுநடக்கிறான். He walks with the assistance of a staff. ஊன்றிப்படிக்க, inf. To read poetry with proper pauses. 2. To sing with proper articulation, emphasis, &c. ஊன்றிப்பார்க்க, inf. To look steadfastly, intently, &c., நோக்கிப்பார்க்க. 2. To consider a thing maturely, to fix the mind intently on the object of consideration, ஆராய்ந்துபார்க்க. 3. To feel, try--as a fruit, &c., pressing it with the hand, கையினாலழுத்திப்பார்க்க. ஊன்றிப்பிடிக்க, inf. To seize firmly, hold tight, இறுகப்பிடிக்க. 2. To mark faults severely, கூர்மையாய்க்குற்றம் பிடிக்க. 3. To hold fast an opinion, பிடி வாதமாயிருக்க. ஊன்றிப்பேச, inf. To speak emphatically or forcibly, உறுதியாய்ப்பேச. இந்தநியாயத்திலூன்றிப்பேசு. Urge this argument, insist upon it. ஊன்றிப்போட, inf. To confirm an opinion, accusation, evidence, &c., ஸ்திரப்படுத்திவிட. ஊன்றிமிதிக்க, inf. To tread cautiously--as one on a well-beam, step firmly, steadily, &c. ஊன்றியெழுத, inf. To press or indent well in writing. ஊன்றிவைக்க, inf. To establish a family. 2. To settle one in life, business, &c. 3. to confirm, settle one in an opinion in a slight degree. ஊன்றுகால், s. A stay, a prop, உதைகால். ஊன்றுகோல், s. A staff, a walking stick, a support, பற்றுக்கோடு. எழுத்தையூன்ற, inf. To put a point over a letter which makes it mute. நாற்றையூன்ற, inf. To set plants.
