akpporuḷ (p. 2) s. [ex. அகம், mind, et பொருள்.] Rules for amatory poems, அ கப்பொருள்விதி. 2. Rules for reasoning, தர்க் கவிதி. 3. mental enjoyments in love, இன் பம். 4. A book treating of mental delectation, ஓரிலக்கணம். அகப்பொருள் is developed in these three constituents, viz., 1. முதற்பொருள், primary arrangements of nature with regard to (a) நிலம், soil, in five varieties, and (b) பொழுது, time in two grand divisions. 2. கருப்பொருள், natural peculiarities incidental to each of the divisions of the soil under 14 heads viz., (a) ஆரணங்கு, peculiar gods belonging to a place, tutelary deities or penates, (b) உயர்ந் தோர், chiefs or lords of the district, (c) இழிந்தோர், subjects or inhabitants under them, (d) புள், birds, (e) விலங்கு, beasts, (f) ஊர், city or town, (g) நீர், water, (h) பூ, flowers, (i) மரம். trees, (j) உணா, food, (k) பறை, drum, (l) யாழ், musical instruments, (m) பண், tune, and (n) தொழில், occupation, trade or mode of earning a livelihood. 3. உரிப்பொருள், essential characteristics of lovers. The subject matter of this treatise, to which the two former are auxiliary or conducive, is developed in five dispositions or actions, either mental or coporal, viz., (a) புணர்தல், union or the state in which husbands and wives are together in their family, (b) பிரிதல், separation when for lawful purposes, (c) இருத்தல், the state in which they continue solitary, especially the bride, (d) ஊடல், love quarrels, (e) இ ரங்கல், weeping and lamentation in any period of their life for any cause. These five characteristics are respectively ascribed to the above five species of soil, as appropriately adapted to their nature, as புணர்தல் to குறிஞ்சி, பிரிதல் to பாலை, இருத்தல் to முல்லை, ஊடல் to மருதம், and இரங்கல் to நெய்தல். இந் த ஐந்து ஒழுக்கத்தையுங்குறித்துப் பாடும்பொழுது அத தற்குக்குறித்த திணையிலுள்ள கருப்பொருள்களையெடுத் துப் பாடுதன்முறையாம். aṭkku (p. 7) கிறேன், அடக்கினேன், வேன், அடக்க, v. a. To subject, control, curb, bring to order--as foes, &c., compress, coerce, restrain, tame, break--as a horse--constrain, repress, cause to recede, bring one to terms, to still, compose, கீழ்ப் படுத்த. 2. To reduce, lessen, condense, abbreviate, குறைக்க. 3. To deposit, conceal, stow away, cover, inter, infold, புதைக்க. 4. To contain, hold, கொள்ள. 5. To encroach upon, seize unjustly, கவர. 6. To engross, monopolize, கைவசஞ்செய்ய. 7. To embody, incorporate, திரட்ட. அடக்கி, s. A taciturn person, one who conceals his real circumstances, ability, &c. 55)

ati (p. 10) A Sanscrit prefix, implying superiority, in place, quality or quantity, உயர்வுப்பொருளைக்காட்டுமடைசொல். Wils. p. 22. AD'HI. அதிகதம், s. The deity, he who is possessed of all attributes, or according to Hinduism, he who is above all attributes, who is without attributes, கடவுள். அதிதூதன், s. A chief ambassador, a chief messenger. See வானோர்கணம்-9. அதிதேவதை, s. A specific or tutelary deity, as Saraswati presiding over the arts, &c. Wils. p. 22. AD'HIDEVATA. அதிரதம், s. The first of the four kinds of royal chariots used in war, நால்வகைத்தேரிலொன்று. அதிரதன், s. A warrior of a particular class fighting in a car, one who protects his chariot and army and detroys his enemy, முழுத்தேரரசன். Wils. p. 23. AD'HIRATHA. அதிரூபம், s. A superior form, fine features, excellence of figure. அதிவாசம், s. The day before a feast, preparation day. 2. A religious ceremony, with perfumes and other ingredients to purify a house, person, &c. 3. Great perfume. அதிவேதனம், s. To send away, to dismiss. அனுப்புவித்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To bid farewell, to take leave. செய்தியனுப்ப, inf. To send a message. வழியனுப்ப, inf. To accompany one a little way. ஆளனுப்ப, inf. aṉṉam (p. 34) s. Boiled rice, food in general, சோறு. Wils. p. 4. ANNA. அன்னக்களை, s. Faintness through hunger; languor on eating too much food when weak. அன்னக்காவடி, s. Boiled rice carried with ceremony under a canopy, &c. to be presented to the idol. 2. Boiled rice begged from house to house, to be distributed to mendicants. அன்னக்கொடி, s. A flag hoisted on a choultry to give notice that rice is distributed gratuitously. அன்னக்கொடை, s. Liberality in giving boiled rice. அன்னசத்திரம்--அன்னசாலை, s. A choultry where boiled rice is distributed gratuitously. அன்னசாரம்--அன்னரசம், s. The essence of food, chyle. Wils. p. 4. ANNARASA. 2. Conjee, rice-gruel, கஞ்சி. அன்னசுத்தி, s. Ghee, நெய். அன்னதாதா--அன்னதாதிரு, s. One who gives food, a charitable person. Wils. p. 4. ANNADATRU. அன்னதானம், s. The giving of boiled rice as alms; [ex தானம்.] Wils. p. 4. ANNADANA. அன்னதானப்பிரபு, s. A very liberal man who gives boiled rice daily, &c. அன்னபானம், s. Food and drink. அன்னபானாதிகள், s. Food, drink, &c. அன்னப்பாகு, s. (Anat.) Chyme. அன்னப்பால், s. The water strained from boiled rice, conjee. அன்னப்பிராசனம், s. The ceremony of feeding a child with rice for the first time--if a boy, on the sixth or any other even month afterwards, as the eighth, tenth, &c.--if a daughter, on any odd month after the sixth. The direction is given in காசிகாண்டம், and is regularly practised by Brahmans, குழ ந்தைக்குமுன்னர்ச்சோறூட்டல். Wils. p. 4. ANNAPRASHANA. அன்னமயகோசம், s. The gross material body, sustained by food--as one of the investitures or supports of any soul, சரீரம். See கோசம். Wils. p. 4. ANNAMAYAKOSHA. அன்னரேகை, s. [in palmistry.] A line on the hand indicating abundance of the means of support to him who has it, கையிரேகையினொன்று. அன்னவஸ்திரம், s. Food and clothing. அன்னவூறல், s. Rice-gruel, or water in which rice has been boiled, கஞ்சி. அன்னாபிடேகம்--அன்னாபிஷேகம், s. Anointing an idol with boiled rice. அன்னாலாத்தி, s. Lamps of boiled rice before an idol, or a new married couple, to dispel the fascination of unlucky eyes. See ஆலாத்தி. 9)

arcṉ (p. 22) s. (plu. அரசர்.) A king, prince. இராசா. 2. A supreme master, God, எப்பொருட்குமிறைவன். 3. The planet Jupiter, வியாழம். 4. The title of the chief of the முக்குவர் caste, முக்குவர்தலைவன்.--Note. There were three famous kings; viz.: 1. சேரன். 2. சோழன். 3. பாண்டியன், which see. (p.) அரசரொளி, s. The splendor or glory of kings; it is of four kinds; viz.: 1. கொடை, gifts. 2. தலையளி, condescension. 3. செங்கோல், justice. 4. குடியோம் பல், care of his subjects. அரசர்குணம், s. The three properties of kings; viz.: 1. தூங்காமை, decision. 2. கல்வி, learning. 3. துணிவு, prowess. அரசர்க்குக்குழு, s. The five different officers of a king; viz.: 1. Ministers, மந்திரியர். 2. Soothsayers, புரோகிதர், 3. Generals, சேனாபதியர். 4. Messengers, தூதர். 5. Spies, வேயர். அரசர்க்குத்துணைவர், s. The eight assistants of a king; viz.: 1. Ministers, மந்திரியர். 2. Rulers, கருமாதிகாரர். 3. Relations, சுற்றம். 4. Door-keepers, கடை காப்பாளர். 5. Citizens of his capital, நகர மாக்கள். 6. Commanders, படைத்தலைவர். 7. Cavaliers, இவுளிமறவர். 8. Warriors on elephants, யானைவீரர். அரசர்க்குறுதிச்சுற்றம், s. The five confidential servants of a king, as, Companions, நட்பர்; Brahmans, அந்தணாளர்; Cooks, மடையர்; Physicians, மருத்துவர், and Prophets, நிமித்திகர். அரசர்சின்னம், s. The twenty-one distinguishing marks of a king. See இராசசின்னம். அரசர்நால்வகையியல்பு, s. The four special qualities of kings; viz.: 1. அஞ்சாமை, fearlessness, fortitude. 2. ஈகை, bountifulness. 3. அறிவு, discernment. 4. ஊக்கம், prowess. அரசர்வல்லமை, s. The four acts or powers of kings; viz.: 1. இயற்றல், making acquisitions. 2. ஈட்டல், collecting his revenues. 3. காத்தல், securing them. 4. வகுத்தல், distributing or expending them. அரசனாணை, s. The order or decree of a king, சாசனம். அரசனுயிர்காத்தோன், s. A unicorn, as the fabled protector of a king, காண்டாமிருகம். அரசன்விருத்தம், s. A kind of poem describing the country and magnificence of the king, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். அரசி, s. A queen, இராசஸ்திரீ. 2. A lady, தலைவி. 42)

aruttam (p. 25) --அர்த்தம், s. Meaning signification, import, motive, கருத்து. 2. Wealth, property, substance, gold, பொ ருள். 3. Fruit, profit, result, consequence, பயன். 4. Gold, பொன். 5. There are thirty-five figures of language; viz.: 1. தன்மை, a word or phrase expressing the nature of a thing. 2. உவமை, a parable. 3. உருவகம், metaphor. 4. தீவகம், a word once used and understood in the other parts of the sentence. 5. பின் வருநிலை, the repetition of the word beginning a sentence with the same or a different signification. 6. முன்னர்விலக்கு, rejecting a truth asserted, by showing its absurdity. 7. வேற்றுமைப்பொருள்வைப்பு, establishing the truth of a particular fact by a general truth. 8. வேற்றுமை, contrast. 9. விபாவனை separating effects from their proper causes and attributing them to other causes alluded to. 1. ஒட்டு, an allegory. 11. அதிசயம், hyperbole or exaggerated description. 12. தற்குறிப்பேற்றம், a principal kind of metaphor. 13. ஏது, a figure showing the cause, &c. 14. நுட்பம், a figure which presents a suitable idea, by a corresponding hint, &c. 15. இலேசம், a figure in which a trifling excuse is given, as a cloak for a thing of greater magnitude. 16. நிரனிறை, one of the eight kinds of construction of a sentence, i. e. the separate successive arrangements of a series of nouns and their verbs in natural or reverse order. 17. ஆர்வமொழி, an affectionate word or phrase. 18. சுவை, the passions or emotions of the mind expressed by gesture, exhibited in action and transferred to poetry. 19. தன்மேம்பாட் டுரை, self-adulation. 2. பரியாயம், a figure in rhetoric by which one thing is told and another connected with it is intended. 21. சமாயுதம், the accomplishing of one's object by indirect means. 22. உதாத்தம், a figure which expresses copiousness, richness, enterprise, &c. 23. அவநுதி, denying the character, quality or essence of a person or thing in order to attribute the same to others. 24. சிலேடை, a word of double interpretation. 25. விசேடம், distinguishing a cause by ascribing to it effects which it is inadequate to produce. 26. ஒப்புமைக்கூட்டம். enumeration of analogous words, &c. 27. விரோதம், opposition. 28. மாறுபடுபுகழ்நிலை, praising a person or thing to the disparagement of another. 29. புகழாப்புகழ்ச்சி, praise, flattery, &c., couched in terms of dispraise. 3. நிதரிசனம், feigning a thing in nature as doing good or evil to another, a species of personification as a mode of moral instruction. 31. புணர்நிலை, a figure in which the same epithets or attributes are adapted to two or more different subjects. 32. பரிவ ருத்தனை, a figure in rhetoric, describing an exchange of beauties, excellencies. 33. வாழ்த்து, congratulation. 34. சங்கீரணம், the blending of several figures. 35. பாவிகம், moral instruction, inference, applications, &c., from events related in epic poems. அலங்காரநைவேத்தியம், s. An offering made in front of a temple, for show. அலங்காரபஞ்சகம், s. A poem of a hundred verses, (lit.) the five forms of beauty. It is a series of five kinds of verses; viz.: வெண்பா, கலித்துறை, அக வல், ஆசிரியவிருத்தம், சந்தவிருத்தம். (இவ்வகை யே மாறிமாறி நூறுசெய்யுள் அந்தாதித்துப்பாடுவது.) அலங்காரப்படுத்த, inf. āṟpatam (p. 43) --ஆஸ்பதம், s. Virtue, essence, vigor, strength, சாரம். ஆற்பதங்கெட்டவன். One whose strength is reduced. இந்தச்சோற்றிலேயாற்பதமில்லை. There is no substance, nourishment, in this rice. 68)

āḷ (p. 43) s. A person, grown man, ஆண் மகன். 2. A man of property, power, influence, consequence, &c., ஆடவன். 3. A servant, slave, அடிமை. 4. A laborer, messenger, கூலியாள். 5. A devotee, தொண்டன். 6. The common termination of the third person singular feminine, பெண்பாற்படர்க்கை யொருமைவிகுதி. ஆளானான். He has attained to manhood, has become a person of consequence. அவனதற்காளோ? Is he competent for that? மரங்களாளாய்ப்போயின. The trees have arrived at maturity. ஆட்காட்டி, s. The forefinger, சுட்டுவிரல். 2. A bird, the lapwing, which screeches on the approach of a person by night, ஓர்பறவை. ஆட்கூலி, s. The hire of a workman. ஆட்கொல்லி, s. A murderer, manslayer, homicide, assassin, கொலை காரன். 2. (fig.) Gold, money, பணம். ஆட்கொள்ள, inf. To employ as a servant, admit as a worshipper, devotee, &c.--used in reference to the deity, or a great person--implying grace or condescension in the receiver, and benefit to the person taken, அடிமைகொள்ள. ஆட்பட, inf. To become a servant, devotee, &c., commonly to a deity. 2. [prov.] To rise from obscurity, become a man of some property, or consequence. 3. To come to manhood. 4. To regain strength, &c., after sickness. அவனென்னாலேயாட்பட்டான். He became eminent by me. ஆட்படுத்த, inf. To adopt one as a devotee, servant, &c. 2. To raise a person from obscurity. 3. To rear, bring up a person from a child to a man, cherish, nourish. ஆட்பார்க்க, inf. To seek another. 2. To watch as a thief, guard himself against detection. 3. To look for persons for any bad purpose--as a prostitute, &c.--as Yama the god of death. ஆட்பார்த்துழலுமருளில்கூற்றுண்மையால். Since Yama the merciless god of death, who goes about looking for his victims, does actually exist. (நாலடி). ஆளரி, s. Vishnu in his incarnation as a lion. ஆளன்கீழப்பெண்சாதி, s. A wife. ஆளானவன், s. One who is arrived at the state of manhood. 2. One who is become eminent, or exalted over others. ஆளொட்டி--ஆளொதுங்கி, s. A hiding place, மறைவு. 2. A sentry-box, காவற்கூடு. ஆளோட்டி, s. A slave-driver, task-master, overseer of workmen, ஆளை வேலைகொள்வோன். ஆள்தேறுதல், v. noun. Recovering strength or stoutness. ஆள்த்திட்டம்--ஆட்டிட்டம், s. Depth, capacity of a person. 2. Marks for recognizing a person, recognizance. ஆள்வணங்கி, s. A tree, Ficus, L. ஆள்வினை, s. Energy, alacrity, diligence, application, exertion, perseverance, an enterprise, முயற்சி. 2.
