ஆன்றல்
āṉṟl (p. 44) . An irregular defective noun. 1. Extension, width, breadth, being extensive, அகலம். 2. Greatness, vastness, dignity, being great, மாட்சிமை. 3. Abundance, copiousness, luxuriance, மிகுதி; [ex அகலல், extending.] (p.) ஆன்றகுணம், s. The highest quality. ஆன்றபுவி, s. The extended earth. ஆன்றவர்--ஆன்றார்--ஆன்றோர், s. Learned persons, the wise, poets, the great--as sages, &c., those who are great in moral excellence, சான்றோர். ஆன்றார்கேட்கிற்செவிபுதைக்கும். (Words so wicked that) the great will shut their ears against hearing them. (பாரதம்.) ஆன்றவொழுக்கு, s. Exalted virtue.

āriyam (p. 41) s. The country extending from the eastern to the western sea, and bounded on the north and south by the Hymalaya and Vindia mountains, ஓர்தேயம். 2. Beauty, அழகு. 3. என்
eṉ (p. 75) கிறேன், றேன், பேன், என்ன, v. a. To say, name, pronounce, express, do, indicate, either by words or signs, expressed, or implied, என்றுசொல்ல. This is the common form for quotation, in which sense it generally occurs in all its various uses. In the infinitive and other parts it is commonly found with one ன் only. என்கு. I say. என்கும். We say. என்ப--என்பர்--என்மர்--என்மனார்--என்றிசினோ ர். They say, they may say, some say, &c. அப்படியென்கிறான். So he says. 2. He does so (the speaker making the sign or sound intended). இல்லையென்கிறேன். I say no-implying impatience, displeasure, emphasis, &c. பணமில்லையென்கிறான். He says he has no money. போவென்கிறேன். I tell you to go, lit. I say go, and implying I have said so before. அவனைப்போவென்னப்போகிறான். When I say go, he goes. காமதேனுவென்கிறபசு. The cow (of the supernals) called Kamadhanu. நானென்னுமெண்ணம். Self conceit, consequence. என்பவன், appel. n. He who says so. 2. He who is called so. பெரியானென்பவன். Perian, or he who is called Perian. ஆவென்ன, inf. To open the mouth, lit. to say ஆ. ஈயென்ன, inf. To show the teeth, lit. to say ஈ. என்பிக்க, inf. To cause another to say, to prove, சொல்லுவிக்க. அதையவன்வாயினாலேயுமக்கென்பிப்பேன். I will prove it to you from his mouth. என்று. The gerund of the verb என், used instead of என the infinitive (which is the poetic usage in this connexion), it serves to end a quotation and to connect it with the following part of the sentence, in which case it often corresponds to the conjunction that, வினையெச்சம். அவனையடித்தேனென்றுசொன்னான். He said that he struck him, lit. he said, I struck him. Note 1st. In connexion with appropriate verbs, என்று, and என often mean to expect, to think, imagine, to suppose, to pretend, to desire, எண்ணுதல் or some such verb being implied; பணந் தெய்வமென்றுநடக்கிறான், he makes money his god; அதுபுகையென்றிருந்தேன், I thought it was smoke, I took it for smoke; அவர்வருவாரென்றிருக்கிறேன், I expect him to come; அவன்சொன்னானென்றுவந்தாயா, have you came because he told you?--Note 2d. According to நன்னூல், என்று and என are இடைச்சொல் or particles, with several specific uses, the other parts of the verb are or may be included. 1. With பெயர் or names; அழுக்காறெனவொரு பாவி, the sinner called envy. (குறள்.) 2. With குறிப்பு or symbolic forms; சிக்கென வூன்றியவேர், the root which has taken firm hold; திடீரெனவந்தான், he came suddenly. 3. With இசை or (imitative) sounds; ஒல்லெனவொலித்தது, it sounded ஒல்; அடுக் கு or repititive symbolic terms are included in this class; படபடென்றுநடுங்கி னான், he trembled (shook, shivered, &c.) greatly; சுஃஃறென்னுந்தண்டோட்டுப்பெண் ணை, the palmyras whose green leaves rustled (emitted the sound of சுஃஃறு). 4. With எண் enumeration, in which they are equivalent to the copulative conjunction; சாத்தனெனக்கொற்றனெனப்பூதனெ னமூவரும்வந்தார், Sattan, Kottan and Bhuta came; தேனென்றுபாலென்றுவமையில்லாமொழி, words unequalled (in sweetness) by honey or milk. 5. With பண்பு or symbolic terms expressive of quality and intensity; சிவேரெனச்சிவந்தது, it reddened to a crimson; வெள்ளெனவா, come in the grey of the morning; வெள்ளெனவி ளர்த்தது, it became very white.--Note 3d. என்று and என also serve to express similitude, like, as, &c.; புலியெனப்பாய்ந் தான், he sprang like a tiger; காந்தளெனக் கைநீட்டி, extending her காந்தள்-like hand. --Note 4th. என and என்று are also used to express pre-eminence, &c.; இன்னதென் றில்லை, it is no matter which; ஆரென்றுநி னைத்தாய், who do you suppose I am? I am not to be treated thus, &c., உயிரென் றுபார்க்கவில்லை, he does not (or did not) regard even life; அவனுக்கின்னாரென்றில்லை, it is no matter to him who; குருவென் றுபேணுகின்றிலன், he does not respect even the guru; எவ்வளவென்றில்லை, it is no matter how much. 2. How much soever, how little soever. 3. It is illimitable, undefined, the quantity is unknown; வாய்வயிறென்றுபார்க்கிறதில்லை, he does not give himself time to eat.--Note 5th. என and என்று are also used with reiterative symbolic terms; மடம்டென்றொலித்த து, it sounded மட, மட; அடியடியென்றடித் தான், he beat him soundly; தலைதலையென்ற டித்துக்கொண்டான், he beat his head greatly through rage, grief, despair, &c.; lit. saying, 'Head, head;' வாய்வாயென்றடிக்க, to beat one's mouth greatly--in sorrow, despair, &c.; எறியெறியென்றெறிந்தான், he threw many times; lit. he threw, saying, 'Throw, throw.'--Note 6th. என and என்று, with a dative imply, designed or appointed for, sacred or devoted to, for the sake of, &c.; சுவாமிக்கென்றுநேர்ந் தது, it is vowed (devoted) to God; தன்பிள்ளைக்கென்றுவைத்துக்கொண்டான், he kept it for his child; எனக்கென்றெடுக்கமாட் டேன், I will not take it for myself-Note 7th. The subjunctive என்றால் joined to verbs or used when verbs are implied forms the subjunctive of those verbs.--Note 8th. The subjunctive என் னில், poetically, என்னின், if, is contracted into எனில் and எனின், and in classical usage to எல் and என்: உம் joined to those forms makes them though; they are added to other verbs or to nouns; ஓரடி யென்கிலும்நட, walk, if it be but one step. 40)

கரப்பன்
krppṉ (p. 96) --கரப்பான், s. Humors causing eruptions, scurf, scall, eruption, blain, any cutaneous or herpetic disease, a rash, erysipelas, tetter, ஓர்கிரந்திப்புண் (c.) கரப்பன்பண்டம், s. Eatables that promote eruptions. கரப்பன்மொய்த்தல், v. noun. Being full, as part of the body with hu mors and itching. கரப்பான்பூச்சி, s. A cockroach, Blatta orientails. கரப்பான்பூடு, s. A plant, Lepidagathis cristata. கண்டக்கரப்பான், s. Eruptions on the neck. மண்டைக்கரப்பான்--கபாலக்கரப் பான், s. A kind of itch that appears on the head of skull. உமிக்கரப்பான், s. A disease of children, a kind of scurf over the whole body. கத்தரிக்காய்க்கரப்பான், s. A kind of eruption supposed to be produced by eating brinjals. கொள்ளிக்கரப்பான், s. A kind of blain extending over the body in children generally between two and four years old. அக்கி--அக்கினிக்கரப்பான், s. The erysipelas. செங்கரப்பான், s. A kind of reddish scurf in children. கருங்கரப்பான், s. A dark kind of eruption. ஊதுகரப்பான், s. A disease of children, a kind of scall, Achy or crustalactea. கடுவான்கரப்பான், s. A cutaneous disease, in the legs of infants, of rare occurrence. 80)
காரணம்
kārṇm (p. 104) s. Cause, origin, source, தோற்றத்துக்கு மூலம். 2. Principle, essential element, மூலம். 3. Instrument or means, கருவி. 4. [in logic.] Cause, reason, the ground of an assertion or argument, ஏது. occasion, நோக்கம். Wils. p. 213. KARANA. 6. One of the twenty-eight Agamas, ஆகமம் இருபத்தெட்டிலொன்று. According to the Hindu Philosophy, காரணம் is three fold, viz.: முத ற்காரணம், துணைக்காரணம், நிமித்தகாரணம், முத ற்காரணம், material, proximate cause--as clay from which pottery is made, or the primitive Maya out of which the universe was produced. துணைக்காரணம், secondary, instrumental, or co-efficient cause--as the wheel used by a potter, or the Sakti (energy) of the god Siva. நிமித்தகாரணம், the efficient cause or the agent--as the potter, in the manufacture of wares, or the god Siva in the production of worlds. சர்வத்துக்குமாதிகாரணமானவர். The first cause or creator of all things. காரணகர்த்தா--காரணகடவுள் s. The Supreme Being--the Chief Agent in all things, முதற்கடவுள். 2. Any supposed miracle-working deity, அற்புத கடவுள். காரணகாட்சி, s. Demonstration 'a priori', or from an axiom. Rott. 2. A pleasing and marvellous sight. காரணகாரியம், s. Cause and effect, காரமுங்காரியமும். காரணகுரு, s. A guru whose sole object is the spiritual benefit of his disciples, மெய்க்குரு--opposed to கரியகுரு. காரணக்குறி, s. [in gram.] Derived names or appellatives, as one of the classes of nouns--opposed to இடுகுறி,கார ணப்பெயர். 2. Presage, omen, prognostic, a sign showing beforehand what is to happen, முன்னறிகுறி. காரணங்காட்ட, inf. To affirm a cause, to ascribe or show reasons, ஏதுகாட்ட. காரணகேவலம், s. Absolute unconsciousness of the soul during its involution in காரணமாயை. It is one of the three காரணாவஸ்தை. காரணசகலம், s. Conscious state of the soul during its manifestation in the world, and consequent subjection to births and deaths; one of the three காரணாவஸ்தை. காரணசரீரம், s. The most subtile embryo of the body, as originally and eternally existing with the soul. (See சரீரத்திரயம்.) In the Vedantic philosophy, the original principle of spiritual ignorance, in which the soul is enveloped during the period of its non-absorption in Brahm. காரணசுத்தம், s. Complete liberation from பாசம், and the attainment of perfect purity and happiness; one of the three காரணாவஸ்தை. காரணச்சிறப்புப்பெயர், s. [in grammar.] Derived names limited in their application--as முடி, a crown so called because it is put on முடி, the head, ஒன் றற்குரியகாரணப்்பெயர். காரணச்சொல், s. A story, a narrative, கதை. (p.) 2. A derived word. காரணப்பெயர், s. [in grammar.] Derivative names. காரணப்பொதுப்பெயர், s. [in grammar.] Derived names extending to various classes--as அணி, jewel; so called because it embraces various kinds of jewels, which are worn, பலவற்றிற்குரியகார ணப்பெயர். காரணமாயிருக்க, inf. To be the author of the thing. காரணமாயை, s. Maya as the primitive, original substance from which all the manifestations of matter and spirit are evolved, and into which they are again resolved at the destruction of the universe, அகிலத்துக்கும் வித்தானமாயை. see மாயை. காரணமுகாந்திரம், s. Motive. காரணவணு, s. According to some atheistical schools, primitive or original atoms, by the fortuitous combination of which, the worlds were originated. காரணவாகுபெயர், s. Names in which the cause is, by the way of metonymy, used for the effect--as in திருவாசகம். காரணவிசேஷம், s. Chief or principal things. (p.) காரணவிடுகுறி, s. A name which, though given originally as descriptive of a class of objects, is applied to individuals of the class, though destitute of the qualities which it describes--as மறவன், கறங்கு. காரணவிலக்கணை, s. [in rhetoric.] Metonymy of a cause for the effect. காரணவிலக்கு, s. [in rhetoric.] Negation of effects from the absence of a cause, ஓரலங்காரம். காரணன், s. The first cause, நிமித்தன். 2. The Supreme Being, கடவுள். 3. Any deity supposed to work miracles, அற் புதகடவுள். 4. A king, அரசன். 5. The name of a kind of arsenic, மிரதபாஷாணம். காரணாவத்தை--காரணாவஸ்தை, s. The three principal, causative states or அவத் தை of the soul--கேவலம், சகலம் and சுத்தம், --as distinguished from காரியாவத்தை. காரணானுமானம், s. [in logic.] A priori reasoning; inference from cause to effect --opposed to காரியானுமானம். (சிவ. சி.) மூலகாரணம், s. The primeval cause. மொழிமுதற்காரணம், s. The first principle of a word. காரணி, s. Parvati, பார்வதி. 103)

kuku (p. 114) s. The moon on the first day of the first quarter when it rises scarcely visible in the East. 2. The hoot of an owl. கூகையொலி. (p.) Wils. p. 238. KUHU. 3. One of the ten tubular vessels of the body, seated in the umbilicus, and extending to the pudendum, தசநாடியிலொன்று. See நாடி. குகுகுகெனல், v. noun. Cooing, or uttering the mournful sound of கூகை owl, ஒலிக்குறிப்பு. 7)

cētu (p. 208) s. A causeway, a break-water, a bank, a dam, செய்கரை. 2. Adam's bridge, extending from the Coromandel coast toward Ceylon--said in India mythology to be ten yojanas wide and a hundred long, and to be formed by Nalan, or according to some legends, by Hanuman, the commander of Rama's armies, to enable the forces to pass over for the invasion of Lanka, சேதுவணை. 3. The island of Ramisseram, இராமேச்சுரம். 4. (fig.) The sacred sea-water of Ramisseram, commonly called தனுக்கோடி, சே துதீர்த்தம். W. p. 943. SE'TU. சேதுக்கரை, s. The northern and eastern shores of Ramisseram, &c. 2. Adam's bridge. சேதுதரிசனம், s. Visiting the sacred shrine at Ramisseram. சேதுதீர்த்தம், s. The sacred sea-waters of Ramisseram. 2. Bathing in the சேது waters. சேதுஸ்நானம்--சேதுநானம், s. Bathing in the sacred water at Ramisseram. சேதுநாதன், s. Siva, or the Sivalingam as worshipped by Rama at Ramisseram. சேதுபதி--சேதுக்காவலன், s. The king of the Marava country resident at Ramnad. சேதுபந்தனம், s. Adam's bridge--as சேது. சேதுபுராணம், s. A celebrated Purana describing the excellence of Ramisseram, the god there worshipped, and the sacred waters. சேதுயாத்திரை, s. Pilgrimage to Ramisseram. ஆசேதுகண்டம்--இமசேதுபரியந்தம். தோரணம்
tōraṇam (p. 264) s. Cords hung with garlands, palm-leaves, &c., or cloth hung up to adorn a road, in honor of an idol, or great person; or to garnish a house for a festivity; or the parts about a temple for an annual ceremony, &c., மகரிகை. 2. An outward door, a porch or ornamented geteway, சித்திரகோபுரவாயில். (c.) 3. A mound raised near a bathing place for a mark, நீராடுமிடத்திற்கட்டும்வரம்பு. W. p. 386. TORAN'A. 4. (R.) The beam of a balance, தராசுதாங்கி. தோரணக்கல், s. A stone pillar errected in a large tank to show the height of the water, நீராழம்அறியுங்கல். தோரணக்கால்--தோரணக்கம்பம், s. Pots supporting garlands, &c. See under கால். தோரணங்கட்ட-தோரணந்தூக்க--தோ ரணம்போட, inf. To make lines and decorations as ornaments, &c. 2. nākaṉ (p. 273) s. One of the ten vital airs, supposed to assist in extending, and contracting the body, and in speaking. See வாயு. W. p. 458. NAGA. 28)
நீட்டு
nīṭṭu (p. 277) கிறேன், நீட்டினேன், வேன், நீட்ட, v. a. To stretch a rope: to stretch out the hand; to extend, lengthen; to protrude the tongue, the head &c.; to reach forth, to draw out wire &c., நீடிக்கச்செய்ய. 2. To make wire by hammering, to beat, அடித்துநீட்ட. 3. [offixed to கை.] To give, to bestow, ஈய. 4. To prolong, delay, protract, procrastinate, defer, retard, தாமதப் படுத்த. இவள்வெகுநீட்டி. She carries her head high. நீட்டவுமாட்டார்முடக்கவுமாட்டார். He will neither stretch nor bend; i. e. he will neither lend nor borrow; is miserly. அதெல்லாம்என்னிடத்தில்நீட்டாதே. Do not boast much to me. நீட்டினகைமுடக்கக்கூடாது. One could not draw in a stretched hand (so thick is the crowd, &c.) நீட்டாள், s. An attending or waiting servant, வேலையாள். நீட்டல்--நீட்டு, v. noun. The act of extending, stretching, &c., as the verb. நீட்டலளவு--நீட்டலளவை--நீட்டள வை, s. Long measure, one of the four kinds of measure, நான்களவையிலொன்று. நீட்டலளவையாகுபெயர், s. [in gram.] One of the four kinds of அளவையாகுபெயர், according to which a measuring rod is put for the piece of land measured. நீட்டல்குறுக்கல், v. noun. [in gram.] Di&ae;resis and syn&ae;resis, separating and combining. Compare குறுக்கல். நீட்டல்மானம், s. Long measure, நீட் டலளவை. 249)
நெடுகு
neṭuku (p. 279) கிறேன், நெடுகினேன், வேன், நெ டுக, v. n. To extend, be lengthened, protracted, delayed, நீடிக்க. 2. To grow tall, high, long, to become too tall, உயர. 3. [prov. in burlesque.] To run away, to be gone, as a thing lent or lost, மறைந்துபோக. 4. To die, சாக. நெடுக. inf. [adverbially.] Lengthwise, longitudinally. 2. Straight on, forward, progressively. 3. Protractedly continuously. (c.) நெடுகக்கிடந்துமாய்தல். Being long occupied by a troublesome engagement. நெடுகப்போயுலாவித்திரிதல். Walking about idly. நெடுகஇருத்தல், v. noun. Sitting or extending in a row. 2. Lasting long, enduring. 3. Waiting long. நெடுகஇழுக்க, inf. To drag a great distance. 2. To put off, commonly with some pretence. 3. To lengthen a sound in singing or reading, to drawl. 4. To linger, as a disease, be lengthened, as a law-suit. நெடுகநடக்க, inf. To walk straight along. 2. To last long as power, influence, prosperity. நெடுகப்பிடிக்க, inf. To continue as rain, &c. 2. To pass on without stopping at the usual places. 3. To be long delayed, as rain. 4. [prov.] To waste away, as property. 5. v. a. (c.) To strect or hold a thing at full length. 6. To occupy, or take up time. 7. To protract a speech, an action, &c. நெடுகப்போய்வர, inf. To walk back and forth. 2. To go about idly. நெடகப்போய்நெடுகவந்தால்சோறாகப்படுமா. If you only go and come directly, will there be rice? நெடுகவளர்தல், v. noun. Growing tall as a person or tree. நெடுகவிட, inf. To let out a cord, to veer. 2. To put off a thing, as நெடுக இழுக்க. நெடுகினகாரியம், s. [prov.] A protracted, tedious, wearisome business. 2. A desperate matter. 56)
