அலங்காரம்
alangkāram (p. 27) s. Ornament, decoration, embellishment, சிறப்பு. 2. Beauty, அழகு. 3. Rhetorical ornament, figures of language, rhetoric, அணியிலக்கணம். 4. One of the sixty-four கலைஞானம், கலைஞானமறுபத் துநான்கினொன்று. Wils. p. 73. ALANKARA. There are thirty-five figures of language; viz.: 1. தன்மை, a word or phrase expressing the nature of a thing. 2. உவமை, a parable. 3. உருவகம், metaphor. 4. தீவகம், a word once used and understood in the other parts of the sentence. 5. பின் வருநிலை, the repetition of the word beginning a sentence with the same or a different signification. 6. முன்னர்விலக்கு, rejecting a truth asserted, by showing its absurdity. 7. வேற்றுமைப்பொருள்வைப்பு, establishing the truth of a particular fact by a general truth. 8. வேற்றுமை, contrast. 9. விபாவனை separating effects from their proper causes and attributing them to other causes alluded to. 1. ஒட்டு, an allegory. 11. அதிசயம், hyperbole or exaggerated description. 12. தற்குறிப்பேற்றம், a principal kind of metaphor. 13. ஏது, a figure showing the cause, &c. 14. நுட்பம், a figure which presents a suitable idea, by a corresponding hint, &c. 15. இலேசம், a figure in which a trifling excuse is given, as a cloak for a thing of greater magnitude. 16. நிரனிறை, one of the eight kinds of construction of a sentence, i. e. the separate successive arrangements of a series of nouns and their verbs in natural or reverse order. 17. ஆர்வமொழி, an affectionate word or phrase. 18. சுவை, the passions or emotions of the mind expressed by gesture, exhibited in action and transferred to poetry. 19. தன்மேம்பாட் டுரை, self-adulation. 2. பரியாயம், a figure in rhetoric by which one thing is told and another connected with it is intended. 21. சமாயுதம், the accomplishing of one's object by indirect means. 22. உதாத்தம், a figure which expresses copiousness, richness, enterprise, &c. 23. அவநுதி, denying the character, quality or essence of a person or thing in order to attribute the same to others. 24. சிலேடை, a word of double interpretation. 25. விசேடம், distinguishing a cause by ascribing to it effects which it is inadequate to produce. 26. ஒப்புமைக்கூட்டம். enumeration of analogous words, &c. 27. விரோதம், opposition. 28. மாறுபடுபுகழ்நிலை, praising a person or thing to the disparagement of another. 29. புகழாப்புகழ்ச்சி, praise, flattery, &c., couched in terms of dispraise. 3. நிதரிசனம், feigning a thing in nature as doing good or evil to another, a species of personification as a mode of moral instruction. 31. புணர்நிலை, a figure in which the same epithets or attributes are adapted to two or more different subjects. 32. பரிவ ருத்தனை, a figure in rhetoric, describing an exchange of beauties, excellencies. 33. வாழ்த்து, congratulation. 34. சங்கீரணம், the blending of several figures. 35. பாவிகம், moral instruction, inference, applications, &c., from events related in epic poems. அலங்காரநைவேத்தியம், s. An offering made in front of a temple, for show. அலங்காரபஞ்சகம், s. A poem of a hundred verses, (lit.) the five forms of beauty. It is a series of five kinds of verses; viz.: வெண்பா, கலித்துறை, அக வல், ஆசிரியவிருத்தம், சந்தவிருத்தம். (இவ்வகை யே மாறிமாறி நூறுசெய்யுள் அந்தாதித்துப்பாடுவது.) அலங்காரப்படுத்த, inf. To adorn, சிங்காரிக்க. அலங்காரப்பிரியன், s. Vishnu. அலங்காரப்பேச்சு, s. Fine, elegant language, flattery. 33) *

nitricṉm (p. 277) s. Example, illustration, authority, precept, திருஷ்டாந்தம்; [ex நி, fulness.] W. p. 467. NIDARSANA. 2. [in rhet.] A species of personification, feigning a thing in nature, as doing good or evil for a mode of moral instruction. See அலங்காரம். 13) *
பகை
pkai (p. 287) s. Hatred, enmity, dislike, repugnance, abhorrence, வெறுப்பு. 2. A foe, an enemy, an opponent, a rival, a competitor, பகைஞன். 3. Disagreement, counteraction, heterogeneousness, contrariety, as of light to darkness, or of medicine to the disease, விரோதம். 5. One of the five situations of a planet. See கிரகநிலை. (c.) முப்பகை, s. The three enemies are: பைசாசு, the devil; 2. உலகு, the world; 3. உடல், the body or flesh. (சது.) உட்பகை, 6, s. The six internal foes attached to the soul: காமம், lust; 2. குரோதம், anger; 3. உலோபம், avarice; 4. மோகம், sensuality; 5. மதம், pride; 6. மாச்சரியம், envy or malice. பகைமுன்னெதிரேறல். Facing an enemy. பகைமேற்செல்லல். Going against an enemy. முற்பகைசெய்யிற்பிற்பகைவிளையும். He who hates will be hated in return. (Avv.) இருளுக்குசூரியன்பகை. The sun is the foe of darkness. பகைசாதிக்க, inf. To gratify one's anger. See சாதி, v. பகைஞர், s. [sing. பகைஞன்.] Enemies. foes. (சது.) பகைத்தானம், s. One of the five situations of a planet. See தானம். பகைத்திறந்தெரிதல், v. noun. Knowing an enemy's strength. (குற.) பகைத்தொடை, s. [in gram.] The composition of words of opposite meaning, as முரண்டொடை. பகைப்படல், v. noun. Being displeased with, being at variance. பகைமன்னர், s. [pl.] Hostile kings. பகையகம், s. Battle-field, போர்க்களம்; [ex அகம், place.] (சது.) பகையாளி, s. A foe, an enemy. (c.) பகையாளிக்குடியைஉறவாடிக்கெடுக்கிறது. Destroying the habitation of an enemy by feigning friendship. பகைவர், s. [sing. பகைவன்.] Enemies. பகைவர்அரண்வளைத்தல். Besieging an enemy's fort. 27)
பாவி
pāvi (p. 313) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To imagine, to conceive, பாவனைசெய்ய. 2. To imitate, to represent, to personify, to personate, சாயல்காட்ட 3. To treat or act toward one well or ill, as if he were another character; to use or regard a thing as something else, பொய்யாய்நடிக்க. 4. To suppose, to fancy, to feign, to assume, எண்ண. 5. To form or contemplate a mental image of the deity, கடவுளுருவைத்தி யானிக்க-- The compounds in common use are கனமாகப்பாவிக்க, to treat one honorably; நீசமாகப்பாவிக்க, to treat one contumeliously; சுகமாகப்பாவிக்க, to fancy one's self well, when sick; உண்டுபாவிக்க, to confirm a lie; கண்டு பாவிக்க, to imitate; and form an image in the mind. கானமயிலாடக்கண்டிருந்தவான்கோழிதானுமதுவாகப் பாவிக்கும். The turkey seeing the peacock's gait may strut and imitate it. பாவிப்பு, v. noun. Conceiving, imitating, feigning, contemplating, &c., as the verb. 37)
பிணம்
piṇm (p. 315) s. Corpse, carcass, சவம். (c.) 2. (சது.) Evil spirit, a devil, vampire, பிசாசம். பிணக்காடு, s. Place of cremation, சுடு காடு. 2. The place of battle where many have been slain, யுத்தகளம். பிணஞ்சுட, inf. To burn a corpse. பிணத்தூக்கம், s. Deep sleep. பிணநாற்றம், s. Bad smell of a corpse. பிணநெய், s. Fat extracted from corpses and used in magic. பிணந்தின்னி, appel. n. One who feeds on corpses. பிணந்தின்னிப்பிச்சி--பிணந்தின்னிப் பேய், s. A puny devil living on corpses. பிணப்பறை, s. A funeral drum, as சாப்பறை. பிணமெடுக்க, inf. To take up a corpse for burning or burying. பிணம்போலேகிடக்க, inf. To be motionless, as a corpse when asleep or feigning sleep. 2. To be indifferent to harsh treatment. பிணம்வீழ்களம், s. A burning or burying place, for the dead, மயானம். 2. As பிணக்காடு, 2. பிணவறையன், s. [prov.] A dull, heavy, lazy person, பருத்தவன். [in displeasure.] பிணவெடில், s. [prov.] As பிணநாற்றம். 17)
பூச்சி
pūcci (p. 329) s. An insect, beetle, worm or any small reptile, சிறுசெந்து. 2. [in combin.] Covering, &c. See கண்ணாம்பூச்சி. (c.) 3. (Tel.) A ghost. பூச்சிகாட்ட, inf. [with the dative.] To frighten children by distortion, grimace. 2. To frighten. பூச்சிக்கடி, s. Ringworm, herpes, &c. பூச்சிக்கூடு, s. A kind of jewel worn by women, காதணியிலொன்று. 2. A cage for insects. பூச்சிபிடிக்க, inf. To breed worms. பூச்சிபூச்சியெனல், v. noun. Crying பூச்சி, or feigning illness beyond the reality. பூச்சியரிக்க, inf. To gnaw as worms and ulcers. பூச்சியாண்டி, s. See பூச்சாண்டி. 27) *
