aṭi (p. 8) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To beat, lash, smite, scourge, stamp, blow or beat as wind, வீச. 2. To defeat, overcome, wash away, carry away as waves, flowing water, &c., to flap, (as with wings) மோத. 3. [vul.] To kill, slay, slaughter, கொல்ல. 4. To fasten, make firm, drive in, அறைய. 5. To act with force and energy, make thorough work of, முயற் சியுடன்செய்ய. 6. v. n. To emit as a scent, வாசனையடிக்க--Note. This word joined to other verbs increases their intensity, as, மழையடித்துப்பெய்கிறது, It rains very hard. பேச்சிலேயடித்துவிட்டான், He confuted by argument,--spoke with fluency and overwhelming eloquence. அடித்துச்சொல்லிக்கொண் டுபோ, Speak fast, forcibly, fluently, &c. Added to neuter infinitives, it makes them active, as, சிதறடிக்க, to disperse. அடிகாற்று, s. [prov.] A very powerful wind, a strong gale, a tempest. அடித்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To beat one's self. அவனுக்கு அதிஷ்டம் அடிக்கிறது. Good fortune abounds to him. 4)

aḷ (p. 33) --அள்ளு, s. The ear, காது. 2. The cheek, கன்னம். 3. Sharpness, keenness of an edge or point, கூர்மை. (p.) 4. A cramp, a clasp, a clamp, a metal plate fastened round the corners of a box, &c., a ring or other iron bandage to hold pieces together, a cramp-iron, a ferrule, iron band, bandage, cincture, பற்றிரும்பு. 5. (p.) Closeness--as of hair, branches, &c., நெருக்கம். 6. [prov.] A disease among children, atrophy, ஓர்நோய். அள்ளுக்கட்ட, inf. To fasten with cramps, with plates of iron, sew together with wire, &c., பற்றிரும்புகட்ட. 2. (fig.) To confirm, பலப்படுத்த. 40)

A reserved man. 4. A courageous man. அழுத்தமாகப்பார்க்க, inf. To be strict, exact to the utmost in dealing, 2. To be precise, particular, to make much of a little fault, to be rigid. 3. aẕuttu (p. 33) கிறேன், அழுத்தினேன், வேன், அழுத்த, v. a. To press, press hard as in writing with a heavy hand, impress, imprint, அழுந்தச்செய்ய. 2. To make firm, compact, உரப்பிக்க. 3. To set diamonds, &c., enchase, inlay fine gold in jewels, பதிக்க. 4. To repeat, reiterate sentiments or arguments in order to make an impression on the minds of others, to insist upon, maintain tenaciously, கருத்திலிருத்த. (c.) இதை யுன்மனதிலே யழுத்திப்பார். Imprint this on your mind and attend to it. அழுத்திப்பேச, inf. To speak impressively, emphatically. அழுத்து--அழுத்துகை, v. noun. Closeness. 6)

aẕuntu (p. 33) கிறேன், அழுந்தினேன், வேன், அழுந்த, v. n. To become pressed, be impressed, pressed close or hard, அமுங்க. 2. To become firm, close, fast, compact, to be pressed together, உறுதியாயிருக்க. 3. To be immersed, to sink, be overwhelmed, ingulphed, plunged, (in sorrow, joy, disease,) அமிழ. 4. To be enchased, inlaid, imprinted, பதிய. (c.) நரகத்திலேயழுந்துவான். He will suffer long and greatly in hell. இன்பசாகரத்திலேயழுந்தினார்கள். They were immersed in an ocean of joy. நன்றாகவழுந்தவெழுது. Write so as to indent well, (on the ola.) காலின்கீழழுந்த. To be trodden under foot, pressed into the earth. அழுந்தக்கட்ட, inf. To tie fast. அழுந்தல்--அழுந்துதல், v. noun. Depression, humiliation the state of being sunk, sinking, suffering by a disease, pain, &c. 8)

āṟṟl (p. 43) s. Strength, power, prowess, ability, வலிமை. 2. Energy, spirit, முயற்சி. 3. Abundance, much copiousness, மிகுதி. 4. Wisdom, knowledge of divine things, ஞானம். 5. Stability, fixedness, firmness, நிலையுடைமை. For the verbal meanings of this word, see under ஆற்று. v. ஆற்றுவாராற்றல் பசியாற்றல் அப்பசியை மாற்றுவா ராற்றலிற்பின். Though the fortitude with which those who practise austerities endure their hunger is very great, yet it is inferior to the energy of the generous who feed the hungry. ஆற்றல்கேடு, s. Great weakness from sickness, great fatigue, வலியழிவு. (c.) ஆற்றறுக்க, inf. To deprive one of power, reduce his strength, &c., desert him in time of need, வலிகெடுக்க. 69)

āl (p. 43) . The chief form of the third case, or instrumental ablative--implying cause, agency, instrumentality, expressing by, by means of, with, by way of, in consequence of, மூன்றாம்வேற்றுமையுருபு. 2. A poetic expletive, usually annexed to the finite verb, also to nouns, அசைச்சொல். 3. A form of the subjunctive, joined to the gerund, or in poetry, to the finite verb, expressing if, வினையெச்சவிகுதி. 4. An optative termination expressing may, let, &c., வியங்கோள் விகுதி. 5. A negative form of the optative--as அழால், don't weep. 6. A form of affirmation, for yes, ஆமெனல். This definition, though given in Saturagarady and Negundu, is not proved by examples. 7. A form of the third case, expressing each, every, distributively. (p.) நீவந்தால். If you come. நாடாமால். It is a country, or one's native land. ஊராலொருதேவகுலம். A temple in every country. மரீஇ யதோரால். May you know--or know --know you what has happened. வாளால்வெட்டினான். He cut with a sword. அரசனாலாகியமனை. A house built by the king. 6)

iṭi (p. 45) s. A stroke, blow, push with the fist, elbow, shoulder, &c.--also with a club or other blunt weapon, தாக்குகை. 2. A thunder-bolt, அசனி. 3. (p.) A roar, thunder, sound, noise, ஒலி. 4. Ground grain, flour, rice-flour, இடித்தமா. 5. Cakes, &c., as a light meal, luncheon, tiffin, சிற்று ண்டி. 6. Pulvil, powder, dust, any thing pulverized, &c., சுண்ணம். 7. Hair-ointment, probably made of powder, மயிர்ச்சா ந்து. 8. Asseveration, affirmation, உறுதிச் சொல். 9. A throb, palpitation, துடிப்பு. 1. The standard of Indra, இந்திரன்கொடி. இடிபுரிந்தெள்ளுஞ்சொற்கேட்பர் மடிபுரிந்துமாண்ட வுஞற்றிலவர். They who are too idle to engage in any enterprize, will hear the words of rebuke which are applied to them. இடியுந்துய்த்து. Eating also millet-meal. (கல்லா.) இடிகொம்பு--இடியம்பு, s. Small mortars fastened upon a pole, which are loaded with powder and discharged at festivals, funerals, &c. இடிக்கொடி, s. The flag of Indra, இந்திரன்கொடி. இடிக்கொடியோன், s. Indra, இந் திரன். இடிபட--இடியுண்ண, inf. To be pushed about, elbowed, shouldered, battered, demolished, &c.--as a wall, bank, &c. 2. To be pounded--as rice, &c. இடிமுழக்கம், s. Thunder. இடியப்பம், s. A kind of paste or cake cooked in steam, சிற்றுண்டிவகை யிலொன்று. இடியப்பத்தட்டு, s. Flat circles or squares of braided rattan, &c., used for making the இடியப்பம். இடியப்பவுரல், s. The mould or cullender through which the paste is pressed to form the cake. இடியப்பவுரற்கண், s. The holes of the இடியப்பம் mould. இடிவிழ, inf. To strike as lightning, to fall as a thunder-bolt. 2. To cave or fall in--as a well. 86)

iṭi (p. 45) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To pound, beat in a mortar, comminute, pulverize, reduce to flour, தூளாக்க. 2. To strike with the fist, a club or any thing blunt, slantingly, not with a direct blow, தாக்க. 3. To push, gore as a beast, to thrust, to butt--as an old calf in sucking, முட்ட. 4. To thunder, eject thunder-bolts, இடியிடிக்க. 5. To beat so as to break, bruise or batter to pieces, demolish, shatter, தகர்க்க. 6. To speak forcibly and emphatically, to use strong language in order to make an impression, to urge, insist upon with earnestness, உறுதிசொல்ல. 7. v. n. To throb, beat-as the head when aching: to beat, pant, palpitate, துடிக்க. 8. To strike--as a vessel against the shore--as a gun fired, &c., உதைக்க. 9. To sound, make a noise, ஒலிக்க. இடிக்குந் துணையாரை யாள்வாரையாரே கெடுக்குந் தகைமையவர்? iruttu (p. 50) கிறேன், இருத்தினேன், வேன், இருத்த, v. a. To cause to sit, to seat, உட்காரச்செய்ய. 2. To detain, cause one to remain for a short time, தாமதிக்கச்செய்ய. 3. To press down or upon, bear upon, press with a style or other instrument, அழுத்த. 4. To beat down--as a floor, beat into-as a nail, to make firm or compact by beating, அடித்திருத்த. 5. To place upon, put in or upon, to fix, make stationary, நிலைபெ றச்செய்ய. 6. v. n. To sink down--as a house or foundation, இருத்திக்கொள்ள; [ex இரு.] வீடிருத்திக்கொண்டது. The house is sunk down. சுமையெனதுதலையிலிருத்துகின்றது. The load bears heavily on my head. நிரம்பியபானையையுறியிலிருத்த. To place a full vessel upon the swing. இருத்திப்பேச, inf. To speak emphatically or forcibly, to speak impressively. இருத்திப்போட, inf. To cause to settle, fix, make a thing stationary, cause a vessel to run aground. இருத்தியெழுத, inf. iṟuku (p. 57) கிறது, இறுகினது, ம், இறுக, v. n. To become tight--as a bandage, knot, &c., to be strained, be close, hard, compact, &c.--as land dried by the sun, அழுந்த. 2. To grow thick in consistency, to coagulate, to be inspissated, be clotted, உறைய. 3. To congeal, become hard--as wax, metals, &c., to become dry--as mortar, clay, &c., கட்டியாக. 4. To become firm--as a loose tooth, பெலக்க. 5. To be close, rich, luxuriant--as growing corn, fruitful trees, &c., செறிய. எண்மண்டையிறுகிப்போயிற்று. My head feels day (needing oil and bathing). சளியிறுகிற்று. The phlegm (in the throat) is become hard. இறுகக்கட்ட, inf. To brace or fasten tight, close, compact, &c., அழுந் தக்கட்ட. இறுகத்தழுவ, inf. To hug, embrace closely, இறுகவணைக்க. இறுகப்பிசைய, inf. To knead hard, make close by kneading, அழுந்தப்பி சைய. இறுகப்பிடிக்க, inf. To hold fast, grasp tight, அழுந்தப்பிடிக்க. 2. To be stingy, parsimonious, tenacious, செலவு செய்யாதிருக்க. இறுகவிறுக, [adverbially.] Very tight, drawn tighter and tighter, அழுந்த வழுந்த. இறுகினகை, s. Close-fistedness, parsimony, ஈயாதகை. இறுகினதேகம், s. A firm, compact body. இறுகினமனம், s. An unrelenting heart, a close or parsimonious mind. இறுக்கம், v. noun.
