The eight special advantages; viz. 1. ரூபம், beauty. 2. சம்பத்து, acquisitions. 3. வித்தை, skill. 4. விவேகம், wit, ingenuity. 5. குணம், good disposition. 6. தனம், gold. 7. நல் லகுலம், good caste. 8. வயது, age. அஷ்டதானபரீட்சை, s. A medicine composed of eight metals: 1. பொன், gold. 2. வெள்ளி, silver. 3. செம்பு, copper. 4. இரும்பு, iron. 5. வெண்கலம், white copper. 6. தரா, brass. 7. வங்கம், lead. 8. துத்தநாகம், zinc, with different salts and vegetable juices; the whole prepared by fire and reduced to powder to be used in various diseases. அஷ்டவசுக்கள், s. kāṟṟu (p. 107) s. Wind, a breeze, the air, atmosphere, வாயு. 2. The wind that passes downward, அபானவாயு. 3. The fifteenth lunar asterism, or nacshatra, சோதிநட்சத் திரம். 4. A ghost, an apparition, a spectre, an evil spirit.--Note. This word is from the third person neut. sing. of a symbolic verb from கால், air. காற்றுள்ளபோதே தூற்று. Winnow while the wind blows; i.e. attend to a thing at a favorable time. காற்றசைகிறது, The wind moves (after a lull). காற்றடங்கிற்று--காற்றமர்ந்தது. The wind has subsided. காற்றடிக்கிறது, The wind blows. 2. The storm beats. காற்றருந்த, inf. To feed on wind--as snakes. 2. [vul.] To be gaping, listless, idle. காற்றாடவைக்க, inf. To air a thing; to expose it to the wind. காற்றாடி, s. A wind-whirl, a child's toy, கறங்கு. 2. A paper kite, காற்றாடிப்பட் டம். 3. (fig.) A changeable person, a waverer, நிலையிலி. காற்றாடிக்கொள்ள, inf. To cool, to refresh one's self. காற்றின்சகாயன், s. Fire, lit. the helper of wind; that which invites wind for winnowing, as a fire. காற்றுக்கழிய--காற்றுப்பறிய, inf. To break wind. காற்றுக்காலம், s. The windy season. காற்றுக்கிளம்பிற்று. The wind has sprung up or risen. காற்றுக்கிளம்பவில்லை. No wind rises. காற்றுக்குமறைவிடம். A shelter from the wind. காற்றுச்சங்கை, s. Possession by a demon. காற்றுத்திரும்பிவிட்டுது--மாறிவிட்டுது. The wind has changed. காற்றுநாள், s. The fifteenth lunar asterism, சோதிநாள். காற்றுப்போகிறது, The air is escaping. காற்றுமுந்துநாள், s. The sixteenth lunar asterism, விசாகநாள். காற்றுமோதுகின்றது, The wind beats or puffs. 2. The monsoon is set in. காற்றுவாக்கு, s. [prov.] Leeward--used when a current of offensive effluvia is conveyed to one by the wind--as by a fisher-woman in passing, &c., காற்றுப் பக்கம். 2. Neglect of duty, சோம்பல். 3. Random, chance, கண்டபாடு. காற்றுவீசுகின்றது, The wind blows. காற்றெழும்புகிறது. The wind rises. காற்றொதுக்கு, s. A shelter from the wind, காற்றடைப்பு. காற்றோட்டி, s. A kind of shrub yielding bitter fruit of an unpleasant smell, said to expel flatulency. It is fried and eaten on some fasts as a mode of selfmortification, ஓர்முட்செடி, Obtuse-leaved hibiscus. இளங்காற்று, s. A gentle breeze. ஊதைக்காற்று--பனிக்காற்று, s. A cold wind, in the dewy season. எதிர்காற்று--எதிர்க்காற்று, s. A contrary wind. கீழ்காற்று, s. East wind. குளிர்காற்று, s. A cold wind. சிறுகாற்று, s. A gentle wind. சுழல்காற்று--சூறைக்காற்று, s. A whirlwind. சுழிக்காற்று, s. A whirl-wind, limited to a small space, and tearing up trees, &c., that stand in its way. தீக்காற்று, s. A scorching, blasting wind. தென்காற்று, s. South wind. நச்சுக்காற்று, s. A noxious air, miasma --as in time of epidemics. நல்லகாற்று, s. A favorable wind. பெருங்காற்று, s. A strong or violent wind. மேல்காற்று, s. West wind. வடகாற்று, s. North wind. 2)

kirāṇi (p. 109) s. A class of disease, diarrh&oe;a. (See கிரகணி.) There are six kinds of diarrh&oe;a or looseness, viz.: 1. Looseness, arising from bile, பித்தக்கிராணி. 2. From heat and bad humors, உஷ்ணவாதக் கிராணி. 3. From phlegm and bad humors, சிலேட்டுமவாதக்கிராணி. 4. From internal heat, மேகக்கிராணி. 5. Dysentery, மூலக்கிராணி. 6. Looseness, arising from rheumatism and bad humors, வாதக்கிராணி. கிராணிக்கழிச்சல், v. noun. A flux attending the கிராணி disease. கிராணித்திரவியங்கள், s. kuṭl (p. 116) s. Bowels, entrails, intestines, garbage, குடர்--Note. இரைக்குடல், கல்லுக்கு டல், சிறுகுடல், தீனிக்குடல், பெருங்குடல்மணிக் குடல், மலக்குடல்--are different kinds of குடல் (See those words.) 2. A kind of fungous matter in the hollow of gourds, &c. காய்குடல். 3. Pith in the body of trees, மரக்குடல். 4. Streaks running down the interrior of plantains and other fruits, பழக்குடல். குடலதிருகிறது. The bowels tremble. குடலுங்கூந்தலுங்கொண்டதுகோலம். The bowels and the hair must be treated as accustomed. குடலழுகினபூசனிக்காய். A pumpkin, the internal part of which is rotten. குடல்கொழுத்தது. The bowels are grown fatty; causing a bad appetite--also exciting pride. குடலெரிகின்றது. The bowels are yearn. குடலேறிக்கொண்டுது. The bowels are twisted or deranged--as by assuming an unnatural position. குடலொட்டிக்கழிய. To have a flux from noxious matter in the bowels; to have a severe and copious discharge at stool. குடலேற்றம், s. Twisting or derangement of the bowels, See ஏற்றம். குடல்மாலை, s. The folds or turnings of the bowels. குடல்வலி, s. Aching pains in the bowels, caused often by continued hunger. குடல்வாதம், s. A disease causing flatulency and frequent watery discharges. குடல்கவ்வு, s. The omentum, caul. குடற்பிரிவு, v. noun. [prov.] A dislodgment of the bowels. குடற்புரை, s. The orifice of the bowels. குடற்பை--குடற்போர்வை, s. The womb, uterus. குடலறவோட, inf. To run very fast so as to cause the bowels to pant; lit. loosen or part. குடலைப்பிடுங்க, inf. To draw out the entrails. 2. (metoph.) To heave, retch, nauseate. குடல்காய்தல், v. noun. Drying of the intestines--being without food: starving. 31)

kumpam (p. 123) s. An earthen pot, a water-pot, கலசம். 2. A large sacrificial pot filled with water, used on sacred occasions; also, a sacred pot painted with mystic diagrams, adorned with leaves, flowers, &c., and sometimes carried in procession, காகம். 3. A kind of arsenic, பலண்டுறு கம். 11. A kind of native arsenic, தா லம்பம். கும்பகலசம், s. A small pot of water, wound round with thread and otherwise ornamented, placed on heaps of grain, deified temporarily by incantations, and worshipped as the representative of a deity--as many pots being set as there are deities invoked on the occasion, மந் திரகும்பம். கும்பசலம், s. The water in the sacred pot, afterwards sprinkled on the people, or sipped by them, as possessing mystic virtue to cure disease, to expiate sin, &c., மந்திரகும்பநீர். கும்பவஸ்திரம், s. The cloth with which the sacrificial pot is adorned. கும்பஸ்தாபனம், s. Setting up sacred pots for worship, religious ceremonies, &c. கும்பதக்கணை-கும்பதட்சிணை, s. Money for the sacrificial pot as an offering to the gods, and taken by the officiating priest. கும்பாபிஷேகம், s. The consecration of an idol, a king, &c., by pouring water from the sacrificial pots with appropriate ceremonies, &c., கும்பநீரபிஷேகம். கும்பமெடுக்க, inf. To carry in procession the sacred pot with appropriate ceremonies. கும்பம்நிறுத்த--கும்பம்வைக்க--கும்பம் ஸ்்தாபிக்க, inf. To set up a sacrificial pot for worship. கும்பம்போட--கும்பங்்கொட்ட, inf. To perform a ceremony to the goddess Durga, after recovery from small-pox; also sometimes in fulfilment of a vew. கும்பகாரன், s. A potter, குயவன். Wils. p. 231. KUMBHAKARA. கும்பசம்பவன்--கும்பசன், s. [prov.] To hang or droop--as the கும்பம் and head of a person while near death. கும்பஞ்செய்ய, inf. To make a hillock over a grave, சமாதியின்மேல்மண்குவிக்க. 2. To inter the dead, especially such as died of cholera. கும்பப்பிளவை, s. A cancerous disease on the top of the back, ஓர்பிளவை. கும்பவாதம், s. One of the eight disorders of flatulence. (M. carīram (p. 167) s. The living human body, the tenement of the soul, மனிதருடல். (c.) 2. Body in general of men or brutes, மிருகாதி களினுடல். W. p. 832. SAREERA. (not com. in Tamil.) சரீரகுணம், s. Temperament, disposition or state of body. 2. The disposition of the body with regard to the different effects of food, &c., on different persons. சரீரக்கட்டு, v. noun. Compactness of body. See கட்டு. சரீரக்கூறு, s. See under கூறு. 2. Any state of the body, as corpulent, thin, &c., thus. 1. வாதசரீரம், a constitution in which flatulent humors prevail, causing bloatedness, &c. 2. பித்தசரீரம், in which the bilious humors preponderate, causing thinness, emaciation, fretfulness, heat, &c. 3. சிலேட்டுமசரீரம், in which phlegmatic humors prevail, causing pulmonary diseases, dryness, &c. சரீரங்கனத்துக்கொள்ள, inf. See under கனம். சரீரங்காய--சரீரங்கரைந்துபோக, inf. To be emaciated, as the body by fever, &c. See காய். v. சரீரசகாயம், s. See under சகாயம். சரீரசங்கட்டம், s. Pain in the body, sickness. சரீரசஞ்சலம், s. Disease, ailment. சரீரசம்ரட்சணை, s. Preservation of the health of the body, nourishment of the body. (Rare.) சரீரசம்பந்த, adj. Belonging or relating to the body. சரீரசவுக்கியம், s. Health, sound state of the body. சரீரசுத்தி, s. Cleanliness, or purification of the body. சரீரஸ்மரணை, s. [com. சரீரசுரணை.] Sense of feeling in the body. சரீரத்திரயம், s. A three-fold enumeration of bodies, as given in the Agama. 1. தூலசரீரம், the gross body which perishes at death. 2. சூக்குமசரீரம், the subtile or ethereal body, or case and immediate organ of the soul, accompanying that through its various transmigrations. It is the embryo or seed of the respective bodies assumed to be, and is, capable of sensations in enjoyment, suffering, &c., beyond those of the grosser body. 3. காரணசரீரம், the original type or embryo of the body, as existing with the soul in its original state. See under காரணம். Another three-fold classification describes bodies as assumed by the soul with its சூக்குமம் adapted to three different states to which it is subject, namely. 1. யாதனாசரீரம், a body adapted to suffering, assigned to the soul for its abode in the infernal regions. 2. பூத னாசரீரம், a body capable of the sensual felicities of சுவர்க்கம், or the abode of Indra. 3. பரிணாமசரீரம், changeable bodies, the bodies of the present state, in which moral actions are performed. சரீரநோய், s. Pains in the body from over exertion, walking, cold, &c. சரீரபுஷ்டி, s. Corpulency. 2. A healthy, thriving state of the body. சரீரப்போக்கு--சரீரப்போங்கு, s. The state of the body; different states of constitution. சரீரமரணம், s. [in Christ. usage.] Death of the body, oppo. to ஆத்துமமரணம், spiritual death. சரீரவதை, s. Mortifying the body by austere penance. சரீரவாகு--சரீரவாக்கு, s. The temperament of the body. சரீரவுபாதி, s. Bodily pain. சரீரவுறவு, s. Consanguinity, oppo. to ஞானவுறவு. (p.) சரீராவச்சின்னவான்மா, s. cūtakam (p. 200) s. Birth, delivery, பிறப்பு. 2. (c.) Uncleanness, ceremonial impurity of a woman from catamenia, மகளீர்தொடக்கு. W. p. 94. SOOTAKA. 3. Ceremonial impurity of a person from the death of a relative, rendering him incompetent to perform certain rites; that from the father's side being greater, the mother's less, மரணசூதகம். 4. According to some, the causes of ceremonial impurity are five, viz.: 1. சனனாசூசம், or சாதகாசூசம், childbirth. 2. மரணாசூசம், or மிருதாசூசம், death. 3. சண்டாளநீரிற்றோய்தல், bathing in the waters used by low castes. 4. சுராபானம்பண்ணல், drinking toddy or ardent spirits. 5. பொய்கூறல், lying. The last seems but little regarded, also the fourth by many. Instead of the last three, the following are named by some; இருது சூதகம், menstruation. உச்சிட்டசூதகம், being spitten upon. சண்டாளபரிசசூதகம், contact with one of low caste. சூதகக்காரன், s. One ceremonially impure. சூதகக்காரி--சூதகஸ்திரி, s. A woman ceremonially unclean, by catamenia, or otherwise. சூதகக்கிராணி, s. A disease attending the childbirth, from wind or flatulency. சூதகங்கழிக்க, inf. To remove impurity by the prescribed means. சூதகங்காக்க, inf. To keep from society, abstain from venery, from shaving. &c., after a death, till the performance of the funeral rites. சூதகசன்னி, s. A disease of females from sexual intercourse during menstruation. See சன்னி. சூதகத்துக்குடையவர்கள், appel. n. Heirs of one deceased. சூதகமலடு, s. One of the six forms of barrenness. See மலடு. சூதகமாக, inf. To have the monthly course as a woman. (c.) சூதகமுட்டு, s. Suppression of the menses. See கருப்பசூலை under கர்ப்பம். சூதகவாயு--சூசிகாவாயு, s. Hysterics, &c.--from irregularities of the monthly course, and other complaints connected with pregnancy. (c.) 5) *

cevi (p. 205) s. Ear, காது. 2. Hearing, audience, கேள்வி. 3. Auricle of the ear, காதுத் துவாரம். செவியுஞ்செவியுமறியாமல். Not known to different ears; a secret. செவிகிள்ள, inf. To pinch the ear. செவிகொடுக்க, inf. To give ear, attend, listen. (c.) செவிகொள்ள, inf. To take into one's ears, to listen. (p.) செவிக்கின்பம், s. That which is pleasant to the ear, as gratifying sounds, good discourse, &c. செவிக்குணவு, v. noun. That which is pleasant to the ear, as instructive discourse, &c. (lit.) food for the ear. (குற.) செவிக்குத்து, s. Pain in the ear. செவிக்கெட்ட--செவிக்கேற, inf. To come to one's ears, to be heard. செவிசாய்க்க--செவிதாழ்த்த, inf. To hear; (lit.) to incline the ear. செவிச்செல்வம், s. The felicity obtained be hearing; i. e. knowledge, science, &c. (குற.) செவிதின்கிறவன், appel. n. A whisperer, a troublesome person, an evil speaker, ஒண்டிக்கேட்கிறவன். (R.) செவிபடுவாதம், s. One of eighty kinds of flatulence. (R.) செவிபிடிக்க, inf. To seize one by the ear, as in play of balls, &c., in token of victory. செவிபடுத்த, inf. To bring to the ears. 2. To utter the initiatory incantations in the ear, மந்திரம்உபதேசிக்க. (p.) செவிப்பாம்பு--செவிப்பூரான், s. An ear worm, காதுப்பூச்சி. செவிப்புண், s. A sore in the ear, செ விக்குள்வரும்ரணம். See காதெழுச்சி. செவிப்புலன், s. The sense of hearing. செவிப்புற்று, s. A kind of eruption about the ears. See புற்று. செவிமந்தம்--செவிமத்திபம், s. Dullness of hearing. செவிமலர், s. [prov.] A kind of female ear ornament, ஓர்காதணி. செவிமுறுக்க, inf. To twist the ears. செவியடி, s. The back of the cheek, the part about the front of the ear. செவியடிக்க, inf. To flap the ears--as an elephant. செவியடைப்பு, v. noun. Temporary and slight deafness. செவியறிவுறுத்த, inf. To give good advice, as a guru, a parent, a great person; or as the minister to his king, &c. (p.) செவியறிவுறூஉ--செவியறிவுறூஉமருட் பா, s. A kind of poem containing moral or spiritual advice, &c., ஓர்பிரபந்தம். செவியறை--செவியிலி, appel. n. one divested of ears, காதில்லாதவன். 2. A deaf person, செவிடன். (p.) செவியிலேதைக்க, inf. To hit one's ear; i. e., to be heard. (c.) செவியிலேவிழுத்த, inf. To listen, hearken. செவியிலேவிழ--செவியிலேபட, inf. To be heard. (c.) செவியிலேபேசுகிறான்--செவியோடேபேசுகிறா ன். He whispers in one's ear. 28)

piṇi (p. 315) s. Disease, malady, distemper, sickness, நோய். (c.) 2. Suffering, affliction, துன்பம். 3. A fastening, binding, link, tie, கட்டு. 4. [prov.] Higher or lower row of threads in a weavers loom, as raised or lowered to admit the shuttle, நூற்படை. பிணி, 3. The three kinds of temperament; 1. வாதம், flatulency, inducing melancholy; 2.பித்தம். bile, bilious distempers; 3. சிலேட்டுமம், phlegm, a phlegmatic temper. (சது.) See சரீரக்கூறு. பிணிக்குறை, s. Attack of an evil spirit on a child, causing disease, பேயி னால்வருந்தோஷம். பிணிதெறித்தல், v. noun. The disease being remedied. See தெறி, v. பிணிப்பேய், s. [prov.] A devil which attacks children. பிணிமிதிக்க, inf. To tread the loom, as a weaver, நூற்படைமிதிக்க. பிணியன், s. As பிணியாளன். (நன்.) பிணியாளன்--பிணியாளி, s. A sickly, or diseased man. பிணியுழற்றல், v. noun. Suffering from disease. (p.) பிணியோலை, s. An ola amulet tied on a child to prevent demoniacal influence. See ஓலை. 22)

pirmu (p. 317) கிறேன், பிரமினேன், வேன், பிரம, v. n. To have a flatulent evacuations by stool, பொருமிக்கழிய. (R.) 13) *

porumu (p. 337) கிறது, பொருமினது, ம், பொ ரும, v. n. To sob, to cry, until the face and cheeks swell, விம்ம. 2. To swell, to bloat--as the body with wind, disease, or indigestion; or as a dead body, பிணம்ப ருக்க. 3. To swell from dampness as paper, or a sponge, ஈரித்துப்பருக்க. 4. To become soaked--as tiles, new pots, &c., ஊறிக்கசிய. (c.) 5. (சது.) To weep, அழ. பொருமிக்கழிய, inf. To have flatulent evacuations by stool. பொருமல், v. noun. Flatulency, wind in the stomach, வயிற்றுப்பொருமல். 2. Weeping, அழுதல். பொருமலி, s. A fat woman, பருத்தவள். பொருமிப்பொருமியழுகிறது. Sobbing and crying greatly. 48)

mlṭu (p. 345) s. [as adj. மலட்டு.] Barrenness, பாழ். 2. A barren beast, வித்தில்லாத விலங்கு. (c.) அறுவகைமலடு. Six kinds of barrenness in women. They are: 1. வாதபித்த மலடு, sterility from bad humors; 2. கிருமிமலடு, by worms in the uterus; 3. சீதமலடு, by mucus; 4. வாயுமலடு, by flatulency; 5. சூதகமலடு, from hysterics; 6. துன்மாமிசமலடு, from fungus formations. மலடன், s. [fem. மலடி.] One incapable of procreation. மலடிமாந்தம், s. A disease in children. மலட்டுப்புழு--மலட்டுப்பூச்சி, s. A worm said to be in a barren womb causing sterility. மலட்டுமாடு, s. A barren cow. 20)

māntam (p. 349) s. A disease in children. W. p. 657. MANDYA. (c.) அஷ்டமாந்தம். Eight kinds of மாந்தம். 1. செரியாமாந்தம், indigestion; 2. போர்மாந் தம், visceral obstructions; 3. மலடிமாந்தம், loathing of milk with fever; 4. பெருமாந் தம், flux and cold; 5. வாதமாந்தம், flatulency; 6. சுழிமாந்தம், colic, with rolling of the eyes; 7. வலிமாந்தம், convulsions; 8. கணமாந்தம், fever and disordered bowels. மாந்தசன்னி, s. Convulsions of infants from indigestion. மாந்தசுரம்--மாந்தக்கொதி, s. Fever from indigestion, chiefly in children. மாந்தப்புல், s. A grass. See புல். 53) *
