arumai (p. 26) s. Rareness, scarceness, scantiness, அபூர்வம். 2. Preciousness, desirableness, pre-eminence. மேன்மை. 3. Difficulty, laboriousness, வருத்தம். 4. Impossibility, unattainableness, கூடாமை. 5. Delicacy, சிறப்பு.--Note. As an adjective, மை is dropped before a consonant with a change of that, when required in combination, and அரு may be changed into அரிய with or without து, or the last vowel may be dropped, and the first lengthened as in ஆருயிர், precious life. அருங்கலைநாயகன், s. Buddha, the lord of eminent sciences, புத்தன். அருங்கலைவினோதன், s. one devoted to learning; one whose time is spent in cultivating the arts and sciences. அருங்கிடை, s. Extreme hunger from long abstinence, &c., பட்டிணி. அருங்கிடைகிடக்க, inf. To be in a starving condition. அருங்கேடன், s. One who is imperishable, who will always prosper. (குறள்.) 2. (c.) Rigid austerities. அருந்தவர், s. Ascetics. அருந்தூதன், s. A tormentor, one who inflicts pain, வேதனைசெய்வோன். அருமருந்து, s. Nectar, அமிர்தம். In classical works, this in the form அருமருந்தன்னபிள்ளை is contracted to அருமந்த, precious as nectar, as, அருமந்தபிள்ளை. A very dear child, அருமந்ததேர். A very costly chariot. அருமறை, s. The sacred Vedas. Ell. 145. 4. அருமறைக்கொடியோன், s. A name of Dronácharya, the military preceptor of the Pandavas and Kurus, because of the Vedic device on his banner. அருமைப்படுத்த, inf. To make scarce, hard, difficult. 2. To impart reluctantly, make much of. அரும்பண்டம், s. A rare article, choice wares, valuable commodity. அரும்பிணி, s. An incurable disease. (நாலடி.) Ell. 118. அரும்பூட்டு, s. [prov.] A girdle, waist-string, necklace, &c., so short as scarcely to be brought to meet, a string, rope, &c., so short as to be tied with difficulty, a bow-string so short as to be liable to break if brought up too far, any thing too little, too short, too narrow, &c., எட்டாப்பூட்டு. 2. Difficulty in settling a negotiation, agreement, &c., இணக்கக்கூடாமை. 3. Entanglement, ensnarement, மோசத்திலகப்படுகை. 4. Forced connection in language, clauses disconnected or not joined naturally, difficult or unnatural; construction, தொடர்ச்சி யின்மை. சொற்களையரும்பூட்டாய்த் தொடுத்துப்பேசினான். He spoke in an unconnected manner. அரும்பொருள், s. Excellent advice, hard doctrine, a rare or difficult meaning. 2. A choice or precious article. அருவினை, s. A great sin. அருவினைகளைந்து. The five great sins. தெய்வமொருவனென்றேத்தி யொருமித்திருந்தால் அருவினைகளைந்துமறும். The five great sins will be forgiven him who worships the one God with singleness of heart. (கம்பன்.) 5)

To fail (as a promise), be frustrated as a hope, &c., be refuted, தவற. அழிகரு, s. Abortion, கருவழிவு. அழிகுட்டி, s. A miscarriage, an abortion applied chiefly to brutes--the casting of the young, வயிற்றில்மரித்தது. அழிந்தோரைநிறுத்தல், v. noun. One of the eight constituent parts of virtue, அறத்துறுப்பு. அழிபுண், s. A foul ulcer, ஆறாப் புண். (M. Dic.) அழிமதி, s. Waste, extravagance, malicious intention, கெடுபுத்தி. அழிமுதல், s. Waste of property, as of capital, principal, &c. முதலழிவு. அழிம்பு, s. [vul.] The nin-payment of a debt or the non-restoration of another's property from dishonest motives, புரட்டு. 2. Ruin, devastation, injury, damage, கேடு. என்னுடையமைக்கழிம்புபேசுகிறான். He talks of destroying my property. அழிம்புசெய்ய, inf. To damage a thing. 2. To debauch a woman. அழிம்பன், s. [vul.] A spendthrift, a profligate, ஊதாரி. 2. One who makes excuses for not paying debts, restoring property, &c., புரட்டன். அழியாதபத்தினி, s. A name of D'hurupary, the wife of the Pandu princes. அழியாமுதல், s. Property devoted or entailed in perpetuity to a temple or other charity, நிலையான ஆஸ்தி. 2. God, கடவுள். அழியாமை, neg. v. noun. Incorruption, immortality, imperishableness, கெடாமை. அழிவழக்கு, s. An unjust lawsuit, a groundless prosecution, a frivolous or groundless defence, a lost lawsuit, அநி யாயவழக்கு. கற்பழியாதபெண், s. A pure virgin. அழிகை, v. noun. Destruction, decay, ruin, சிதைவு. அழிவு, v. noun. Decay, injury, ruin, loss, desolation, the act of perishing. கேடு. 2. That which has perished of itself, கெட்டது. 3. Fault, immorality, (in a restricted sense,) deviation from rule, குற்றம். அன்றுகண்டமேனிக்கழிவில்லை. Just the same appearance as before. அழிவின்மை, neg. v. noun. Freedom from decay. அழிவுகாலம், s. The time of a universal deluge and destruction at the end of an age, யுகமுடிவு. கடையழிதல், v. noun. Suffering extremely. நிறையழிதல், v. noun. Being disheartened, dispirited, without hope. 7)

(காசிகரண்டம்.) அழிகட்டு, s. A fabrication either varbal or written to deprive another of his right, a forgery, (a law term), பொ ய்ச்சீட்டு. 2. An excuse, pretence, subterfuge, வீண்போக்கு. 3. Obstacle, impediment, hinderance, தடை. 4. Means used for counteracting magic, poison, &c. மாற்று. அழிச்சாட்டியம், s. Improper treatment, an unlawful or wicked proceeding. வாங்கின கடனைக்கொடாம லழிச்சாட்டியம் பண் ணிவருகிறான். He gives much trouble by delaying to pay the debt. அழிச்சாட்டியக்காரன், s. A turbulent fellow, a bully. அழிப்பு, v. noun. Destroying, ruining, wasting, consuming in an active sense, அழிக்கை. அழிப்பாளி, s. A spendthrift, squanderer, prodigal, profligate, ஊதாரி. 8)

To throw, case, poke out, poke or thrust into, எறிய. 5. To designate, appropriate, assign, allot, destine, dictate, விதிக்க. 6. To pour, shower, சொரிய.--As an expletive, it is joined to the gerunds of other verbs in which, it sometimes gives additional force or emphasis to the action expressed, or serves as a kind of finish, வினையெச்சத்தோடுசேர்ந்தோர்பகுதிநீர்மைத்தா ய்வருவது.--The gerund இட்டு is sometimes used to express cause, instrumentality, &c.--as, அவனையிட்டிந்தப்பழிவந்தது, this disgrace happened through him. மரத்தினிற்பறவைக்கிடுகலேபோலப்பாதகமனைத்துந் தொலைத்திடும். It will drive away every evil, as a stone thrown at birds in a tree puts them to flight. இடுகடை, s. A door or gate where much liberality is exercised, கொடுப்போனில்வாயில். (p.) இடுகறல், s. Fuel, விறகு. (நிக ண்டு.) (p.) இடுகாடு, s. A burying place, பிரே தம்புதைக்குமிடம். 2. A place for burning the dead, சுடுகாடு. இடுகுறி--இடுகுறிப்பெயர், s. Arbitrary names of things, primitive terms. இடுகுறிச்சிறப்புப்பெயர், s. [in grammar.] A specific term or primitive nouns not common to all--as தெ ங்கு, a cocoanut tree. இடுகுறிப்பொதுப்பெயர், s. [in grammar.] A generic term, or primitive common noun--as மரம், tree or trees. இடுதங்கம், s. Refined gold, gold of the best quality, புடமிடுதங்கம். 2. Gold inlaid, set, mounted, &c., கல்நகையிலுள் ளிடுதங்கம். இடுதண்டம், s. A penalty, விதிக் கப்பட்ட ஆக்கினை. 2. A penalty, fine, mulct, அநியாயதண்டம். இடுதிரை, s. A curtain, திரைச் சீலை. இடுமருந்து, s. uṭai (p. 59) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To break a vessel, &c.; to burst, break open, break a bank, &c.; to break lumps, clods, &c.; to break a boil, a blister, the skull or any other flat, solid or massive substance; to split, fracture, தகர்க்க. 2. To break the ranks of an enemy, to defeat, discomfit, disperse, rout, put to flight, இரிக்க. 3. To ruin, impoverish one, கெடுக்க. 4. To untwist, untwine, முறுக்கவிழ்க்க. 5. v. n. To break--as a boil, கட்டியுடைக்க.-Note. உடைய and உடைக்க are not applicable to the breaking of a tree, a branch, an arm or any other long and cylindrical body that is broken off short or asunder. For this meaning see முரிக்க, ஒடிக்க, &c. தண்ணீருடைத்துப்பாய்கிறது. The water has broken (the dam) and flows out. பல்லுடைப்பேனென்றான். He said, I will break your teeth. கட்டுடைக்க, inf. To burst an embankment--as water. பெண்மையுடைக்கும்படை, s. The weapon that dissolves female continency. தலையுடைக்க, inf. To take much pains, mentally--as in abstruse calculations, intricate business. உடைப்பு, v. noun. A breaking, a breach, the bursting of a bank, உடை க்கை. 2. s. A channel out or broken through a dam in a field, disruption, உடைந்தஅறுவாய். 3. Weakness, தளர்ச்சி. தலையுடைப்பு, v. noun. A trouble, some intricate employment. 102)

ōṭu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஓடினேன், வேன், ஓட, v. n. To run, flee, flee away, pass quickly, விரைந்துசெல்ல. 2. [used with the impers. terminations.] To grow long, extend, be long, go far, நீள. 3. To divide, split, crack, வெடிக்க. ஓடவுமாட்டான் பிடியுங்கொடான். He will neither run, nor suffer himself to be caught. அவனுக்குஎழுத்துநடையோடாது. He cannot read freely. ஊரோடுகையிலொக்கவோடு. Run when your fellow-countrymen do; i. e. do as others do. வேரோடுகிறது. The root runs (into the ground). கப்பலோடுகிறது. The ship is sailing, is under sail. ஓடவைத்தல், v. noun. Refining metals, புடம்வைத்தல். இழிவினோடொன்றிநின்றவாடகத்தையோடவைக் குமாறுபோல். As refining gold spoiled by mixture with the same metal of inferior quality. (பார.) ஓடவைத்தபொன், s. Refined gold. ஓடாணி, s. [in jewelry.] A pin or bolt passed into an ornament as a fastening, ஆபரணக்கடைப்பூட்டு. ஓடித்திரிய, inf. To run about. 2. To assume airs. 3. To take great pains, &c., to attain an object. ஓடிப்படர, inf. To run and spread as a creeper. ஓடிப்பிடிக்க, inf. To overtake in running. ஓடிப்போக, inf. To run away. ஓடியாடிப்பார்க்க, inf. To go about, to endeavor. அவன்ஒருஉத்தியோகத்திற்கோடியாடிப்பார்க்கிறா ன். He goes about in pursuit of a situation. ஓடியுறைய, inf. To congeal gradually, இறுக--chiefly used in the past. கஷாயமெல்லாமோடியுறைந்தது. The decoction is all congealed. ஓடிவர, inf. To approach at a running pace. ஓடிவிறைக்க, inf. To extend--as stiffness over the body through cold, முழுதும்விறைக்க. ஓடிவெளிக்க, inf. [prov.] To be dispelled--as clouds; to clear--as the sky, முகில்பரந்தொழிய. 2. To be discovered--as fraud, theft, &c., களவுவெளிப்பட. அவர்வஞ்சகமெல்லாமோடிவெளித்துப்போயிற்று. He has discovered the imposition, &c. மழையோடிவெளித்துப்போயிற்று. The appearance of rain is past away, the sky is become clear. ஓடுதாவடி, s. Bustle and confusion in preparing--as for a journey, &c., going abroad--as for business, &c., in a time of bustle, &c., கலக்கம். ஓடுதாவடிப்படுதல், v. noun. Being in a bustle--as in preparing for a journey, &c. ஓடுபந்தல், s. [prov.] A moveable canopy supported on cords, &c., நடைக் காவணம். ஓடுவிப்புருதி, s. A running cancer, ஓர்புண். ஓட்டம், v. noun. Running, flight, galloping, speeding, ஓடுமோட்டம். 2. Current, flowing, course, pace, drift, நீரோட் டம். 3. Defeat, rout, retreat, flight, தோல்வி. அங்கேநானெடுத்தஓட்டமிங்கேவந்தோய்ந்தது... I ran all the way hither. அவனுக்கெழுத்தோட்டமில்லை. He does not read fluently. ஓரோட்டமாய்வா. Come at once, come without halting, do not stay on the way. ஓட்டங்காட்ட, inf. To lead the way, to precede inducing others to follow. ஓட்டமாகவோட, inf. To run with great speed. ஓட்டமெடுக்க-ஓட்டம்பிடிக்க, inf. To set out running, start out with speed, to flee; to begin to run. நீரோட்டம், s. A current, a stream. 78)

ōṭṭu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஓட்டினேன், வேன், ஓட்ட, v. a. To cause to run, to drive, propel, despatch, steer a vessel, செலுத்த. 2. To drive away, put to flight, chase, expel, exile, to disperse ignorance, darkness, ஓ டச்செய்ய. (தீ. 11.) 3. To pass in, insert, உட்செலுத்த. அந்தமாட்டையோட்டிக்கொண்டுபோய்விட்டான். He has driven away that cow. அந்தப்பேயையோட்டிப்போட்டான். He has expelled that demon. அவர்களைக்காட்டிலோட்டிவிட்டான். He has forced them into the jungle. ஓட்டி, s. A driver--used in combination--as ஈயோட்டி, fly-flapper; பே யோட்டி, an enchanter; படவோட்டி--சம் பானோட்டி, a boatman; ஆளோட்டி, a superintendent of laborers. ஓட்டு, v. noun. Sailing of a vessel, கப்பலோட்டம். 2. An assuming course of conduct. அந்தவோட்டிங்கேசெல்லாது. That course of conduct will not be tolerated here. எல்லாவோட்டுங்குல்லாவிலே. The value of the canoe is in the outrigger; i. e. all the matter hangs on him. [prov.] இந்தக்காற்றுநின்றாற்சென்னபட்டணத்திற்கு எத் தனைநாளோட்டிற்போகலாம். A species of plantain, ஓர்வாழை. கல்லகம், s. A rocky mountain, மலை. கல்லக்காரம், s. Candied molasses, candy, பனங்கற்கண்டு. கல்லக்காரம்விளைய, inf. To become candied-as the molasses of sweet toddy. கல்லங்காய், s. A fruit which becomes as hard as a stone, கற்காய். கல்லடிக்க, inf. To hew or cut stone. 2. To strike the foot against a stone. கல்லடிமூலம், s. A kind of arsenic, ஓர்பாஷாணம். கல்லடைப்பு, s. Retention of urine by gravel, நீரடைக்குமோர்நோய், Calculus. கல்லளை--கல்வளை, s. To obtain by very great labor. கல்லிழைக்க, inf. To set precious stones, கற்பதிக்க. கல்லீயம், s. A hard kind of lead, pewter, வன்மையானஈயம். கல்லுக்காரர், s. To frustrate a business by accusations or under-hand representations, காரியத்தைத்தடை செய்ய. கல்லுயர்தோள், s. A mountain-like shoulder. கல்லுரல், s. [prov.] A stanza commemorative of the death of an ancestor, mentioning the day and hour of the moon when it happened, kept by the descendants to assist in determining the precise time for the annual funeral rites, புகழ்ச்சிசெய்யுள். 4. [prov.] The mane of a well-known stanza, believed to have been written during the period of a Tamil Dynasty in Ceylon, foretelling, as it is interpreted, a succession of different foreign powers, and the final restoration of native rule, in those regions. It is as follows: முன்னைக்குளக்கோட்டன்மூட்டுந்திருப்பணியைப்பின்னைப்பரங்கிபிரிப்பனே--மன்னா கேள்--பூனைக் கண்செங்கண்புகைக்கண்ணனாண்டபின்பு--மரனே வடுகாய்வரும். 'The sacred edifices which the king Koolakottan reared, the Portuguese will demolish, listen O king-after the reign of the cat-eyed, the redeyed and the smoke-eyed, O thou deereyed, the Vaduca will succeed.' There is a different version of the last line, but it does not affect the general meaning-the smoke-eyed are said to be the present dominant power. கல்வெள்ளி, s. kālam (p. 104) s. Time. duration, பொழுது-Note. In Hindu philosophy, காலம் is said by the Saivas to have proceeded from மோகினி Maya, and to be a co-efficient cause with Siva in the acts of creation, preservation and destruction. It is Time personified, and according to the Hindu metaphysicians, one of the seven வித்தியாத் துவம். (சிவ. சி.) 2. Season of the year or life; also a specific time of the day, பருவம். 3. A seasonable or proper time, opportunity, season, சமயம். Wils. p. 216. KALA. 4. Day-break, விடியல். 5. (fig.) (c.) The time appointed for death, as distinguished from that for accident death, முடிவு. 6. [in gram.] Tense; also, the characteristic of a tense, வினையின்காலம். Time in reference to the influences of planets upon the fortune, health, &c., of a person. காலநோக்காடு, s. [prov. in child-birth.] Natural and timely labor. காலந்தள்ள, inf. To pass one's days, to pass one's time, to maintain one's self, to live, காலம்போக்க. காலப்பரிச்சேதம், s. Discernment--as to the time of an event or the existences of a thing. It is one of the three பரிச்சேதம் modes of ascertaining facts. காலபரிபாகம், s. The maturity of the soul, or time for its attaining bliss, having eliminated its good and evil propensities. காலபேதம்--காலவித்தியாசம்--கால வேற்றுமை, s. Difference of time with respect to the changes it produces. காலபோகம், s. A crop of grain or fruits in the proper season. 2. The enjoyment or suffering resulting from previous moral actions, to which a living being at distant times is subjected, காலப் பயனுகர்வு. காலப்பெயர், s. Nouns or names of time--as year, month. 2. Nouns derived from names of time--as பங்குனன் (one born in the பங்குனி month). காலப்பெயர்ச்சி, s. Change of season or monsoon; unseasonable weather, கால விகற்பம். காலமயக்கம்--காலமயக்கு, s. [in gram.] An improper use of the tenses, காலவழு. 2. An allowed deviation in the use of tenses, காலவழுவமைதி. காலமலைவு, s. Confusion of statement in regard to time--as asserting that the lotus blooms in the evening, or the lily during the day. காலமல்லாக்காலம், s. An unfortunate, fatal time; an unseasonable time, அகாலம். காலமழை, s. Rain in the proper season, பருவத்திற்பெய்யுமழை. காலமறிய, inf. To know the times so as to adapt one's self to them, காலவகைய றிய. 2. To know things past, present or future intuitively or by apiritual sight --as yogis, காலவியற்கையறிய. காலமாறு, Morning by morning, every morning, காலைதோறும். (c.). காலமானம், s. [in arith.] Time measure. காலமிருத்து, s. Death at the destined season--as distinguished from accidental death, விதித்தகாலத்திலடையுமரணம். காலமே--காலத்தாலே. Customs of the times. காலவழு, s. [in gram.] An improper use of the tenses--as the past for the future, &c., காலக்குற்றம். காலவாகுபெயர், s. [in gram.] Nouns of time or portions of time, used by metonymy for what is intimately connected with time--as கார்த்திகை, the name of a month, for a plant which mostly blossoms during the month. காலவிடைநிலை, s. [in gram.] Characteristics of tenses, காலத்தைக்காட்டுமிடை நிலை. They are 1. த், ட், ற், and இன் for the past. 2. ஆநின்று, கின்று and கிறு for the present. 3. ப், ல், for the future. There are some other characteristics-as மன், இசின், ய், இ, ன், &c. காலவிரைவு, v. noun. Swiftness or rapid flight of time. காலாகாலம், s. Times seasonable and unseasonable, auspicious and inauspicious, நற்காலந்துர்க்காலம். 2. One time or another, not often, not frequently. (c.) காலாக்கினி, s. The fire which is to destroy the world at the end of the great yuga; a deluge-fire said to be in reserve in the nethermost part of the earth. Wils. p. 218. KALAGNI. 2. One of the two-hundred and twenty-four புவ னம் under the regency of Kálágni. காலாக்கினியுருத்திரம், s. One of the thirty-two உபநிடதம். காலாக்கினியுருத்திரர், s. Rudra or the deity in the lowest region, in charge of the deluge-fire. There are ten subordinate Rudras, who resemble their chief. காலாந்தம், s. The end of time, கால முடிவு; [ex. அந்தம்.] காலாந்தரம், s. Intermediate space of time, process of time, காலநடை. 2. Meanwhile, காலவிடை; [ex அந்தரம், interval.] காலேச்சுரவாதம், s. The metaphysical philosophy which maintains that Time is God. காலோசிதம், s. A fit, proper time, உச் சிதகாலம்; [ex உசிதம்.] அந்தியகாலம், s. Wealth shall or itself accumulate at the appointed time of increase, as the liquor within a cocoanut, and no toll is required; but at the fixed time for ruin, the riches of a hard-working man shall pass away like the contents of a woodapple eaten by an elephant. எக்காலமும். kiravuñcam (p. 109) s. The Andil bird, அன்றில். (சது.) According to some authorities, a kind of heron. 2. The fourth of the seven Dwipas or continents, surrounded by the annular sea of curds, கிரவுஞ்சதீவு. (காந்.) 3. [vul.] Irregularity; shameless, immodest, profligate behavior--as that of the prince கீசகன் towards துரோபதை, ஒழுங்கின்மை. கீசகநாடகம்பண்ண, inf. To behave immodestly. கீசகாரி, s. A name of Bhima as the destroyer of கீசகன்; [ex கீசகன் et அரி.] கீசம்பறை--கீசறை s. [prov. contraction of கீசகன்முறை.] Disorder, confusion, profanation, prostitution, violation, முறை கேடு. கீசம்பறைகாரன், s. A disturber; a violater of decency, chastity, principle, &c. 5)

kuṉi (p. 132) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. n. (from Sans. Kun'a, contracted or curved.) To stoop, crouch, bend; to be bowed--as the head, வணங்க. 2. To bend or be bent-as a bow, வளைய. 3. (fig.) To stoop, condescend; to yield, தாழ. 4. (சது.) To pity, commiserate, relent, grieve, இரங்க. குனியநிமிரமாட்டான். He can neither stoop nor straighten himself--either from disease, fatness, or having eaten too much. வில்லுக்குனியாதெய்தால்விலகாதெதிர்த்தபகை. If the bow be not bent sufficiently, the enemy will not be put to flight. முட்டுமுன்குனியவேண்டும். Stoop before you strike your head; i. e. after-thoughts avail nothing. குனிந்துநடக்க, inf.
