pāḷai (p. 313) s. Flower-sheath, or spatha of a palm-tree, பனைமுதலியவற்றின்பாளை. (c.) 2. [prov. for பாலன்.] A male infant under five years, ஐந்துவயதுக்குட்பட்டஆண்குழந்தை. 3. A kind of paddy. See செம்பாளை. 4. (R.) Empty ears, பதர்.--Of the பாளை are அலகுபாளை, spatha, of the male palmyra tree; கட்டுப்பாளை, காய்ம்பாளை, the flower calyx of the female palmyra tree; வம்புப்பாளை, the flower-sheath put forth out of the proper season; பருவப்பாளை, buds properly put forth; பூம்பாளை, fruit-bearing flower-stem; கமுகம் பாளை, spatha of the areca-nut tree; பனம் பாளை, the spatha of a palmyra tree; தென்ன ம்பாளை, the spatha of cocoa-nut tree. பாளைக்கத்தி, s. A toddy-drawer's knife. பாளைசீவ, inf. To pare the fruit-stem of a palm-tree, for toddy. பாளைச்சூழ், s. [prov.] A torch made of the dried sheaths of cocoa-nut flowers. பாளைதட்ட, inf. To beat the flower stem that it may yield toddy. பாளைத்தடி, s. A short club used by toddy drawers for preparing the flower buds. பாளைப்பருவம், s. Infantile state. பாளைமடல், s. The expanded sheath of a palm-tree-blossom. பாளையரம், s. A long coarse kind of rasp, used in filing horse's hoofs, &c. பாளையிடுக்க, inf.
