aṭi (p. 8) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To beat, lash, smite, scourge, stamp, blow or beat as wind, வீச. 2. To defeat, overcome, wash away, carry away as waves, flowing water, &c., to flap, (as with wings) மோத. 3. [vul.] To kill, slay, slaughter, கொல்ல. 4. To fasten, make firm, drive in, அறைய. 5. To act with force and energy, make thorough work of, முயற் சியுடன்செய்ய. 6. v. n. To emit as a scent, வாசனையடிக்க--Note. This word joined to other verbs increases their intensity, as, மழையடித்துப்பெய்கிறது, It rains very hard. பேச்சிலேயடித்துவிட்டான், He confuted by argument,--spoke with fluency and overwhelming eloquence. அடித்துச்சொல்லிக்கொண் டுபோ, Speak fast, forcibly, fluently, &c. Added to neuter infinitives, it makes them active, as, சிதறடிக்க, to disperse. அடிகாற்று, s. [prov.] A very powerful wind, a strong gale, a tempest. அடித்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To beat one's self. அவனுக்கு அதிஷ்டம் அடிக்கிறது. Good fortune abounds to him. 4)

aṭai (p. 8) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To shut, close, stop up, சார்த்த. 2. To lock, பூட்ட. 3. To block up a passage, obstruct, தடுக்க, (see குறள். அன்புடைமை. Ellis 215.) 4. To enclose, encompass, shut up, encage, fold cattle, &c., புகுத்த. 5. To secure, keep safely, conceal, காப்புச்செய்ய. சுவாமிதிருவுளத்தடைத்தார். Swamy thought --kept in his mind. அடைகல், s. A stone placed at the entrance of a sluice to prevent the water from flowing, மதகடைக்குங்கல். அடைகுளம், s. [prov.] A tank with no outlet, pent up, stagnant water. அடைசீலை, s. Cloth steeped in a medical preparation and put in the mouth for a sore throat, &c., அடைசுபொட்டணம். அடைத்தகுரல், s. A hoarse, husky voice. அடைபட, inf. To be closed, shut up, அடைக்கப்பட. 2. To be obstructed, as a passage, &c., தடைபட. அடைப்பன், s. Obstruction of the throat, quinsy in cattle, ஓர்வியாதி. அடைப்பு, v. noun. Shutting, closing, stopping. 2. s. Obstruction. 3. Enclosure. 4. Trees, &c., enclosed. 5. A plug, stopper, peg. 6. A door. காதடைப்பு, s. Obstruction of the ears or dullness of hearing, from cold, hanger. (c.) மாரடைப்பு, s. Obstruction of the breast. அடைமழை, s. ari (p. 23) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To sift, separate larger and smaller bodies with the hand, sieve, riddle, &c., கொ ழிக்க. 2. To separate rubbish from dried leaves with the hand, in order to gather the latter for fuel, சருகரிக்க. 3. To beat and wash away, as flowing water on sand, or waves on the shore, washing away the earth and leaving the pebbles, &c. behind, நீர்மணலையரிக்க. 4. To wash rice, separate dust and grit from rice, &c., by washing; or particles of gold, silver, &c., கழுவிப்பி ரிக்க. 5. To gnaw as white ants and other vermin, செல்முதலியவரிக்க. 6. To corrode, as rust, &c., cut away, as caustics, consumemar, as moths, கல்ல. 7. To tease, vex by importunity, as creditors, an urgent child, &c., மனதையலைக்க. 8. To take away one's property by little and little, சிறிதுசிறிதாக க்கவர. 9. [in arith.] To divide, பங்கிட. அரித்துப்பிடுங்குகிறான். He teases or vexes by incessant entreaties, (lit.) he stings or bites as lice. மணிகளையரித்தெடுத்தான். He separated and took the precious stones. அரிகறையான், s. A teasing person, (lit.) a gnawing white ant. அரிபிளவை, s. A cancerous formation, constantly eating into the flesh, ஓர்வகைப்பரு. அரிபுழு, s. Worms constantly grawing and causing itching irritation, &c. (c.) அரிபெட்டி, s. A sieve or cullender, சல்லடை. அரிமணல், s. Fine sand. அரிப்பு, v. noun. Sifting, separating. 2. Nibbling, gnawing, &c. 3. Itching. 4. Corrosion. 5. Smartness. (c.) அரிப்பன்--அரிப்பான்--அரிப்புக் காரன், s. A sifter, one who sifts sand in the street, or the dust of the goldsmith. அரிப்புக்கூடை, s. A riddle.

By thee. ஆணைசெலுத்த, inf. To sway the sceptre, exercise the functions of government. ஆணைச்சக்கரம், s. Sceptre. 2. (fig.) Royal power. ஆணைமீற, inf. A devotional poem composed by yogis. ஆனந்தநித்திரை, s. Abstract meditation in the stat of ஞானம், on the deity, யோகநித்திரை. ஆனந்தபயிரவி, s. The name of one of the thirty-two tunes, ஓரிராகம். (p.). ஆனந்தபரவசம், s. Extacy of joy, especially in divine things. (p.) ஆனந்தபாட்பம்--ஆனந்தபாஷ்பம், s. Tears of joy, weeping from excessive joy, ஆனந்தக்கண்ணீர். (p.) ஆனந்தமயகோசம், s. āṟu (p. 43) s. A river, natural current, brook, channel or passage through shallows, a canal, நதி. (c.) 2. (p.) Way, road, path, mode, manner, rule, method, order, custom, circumstance, வழி. In this sense, in verse, the று, is sometimes omitted. 3. Morality, virtue, good conduct, way in a moral sense, the good or right way, ஒழுக்கம. சுரருலகெய்துமாறளித்தான. He endowed him with the bliss of the gods, or literally, granted that he should attain to the world of the gods. யான்வந்தவாசென்றியம்புதி Go and tell that I am come--ஆ for ஆறு. என்றவாறு. A form added to explanations of grammatical rules, &c., implying such is the meaning. ஆறலைக்க, inf. To rob in the highway, infest the road, வழிப்பறிக்க. (p.) ஆறலை--ஆறலைப்பு, v. noun. Highway-robbery, street-robbery, வழிப்பறி க்கை. ஆறலைக்கள்வருமளியராயினார். Even the highway-robbers have proved friends. (நடை.) ஆறாடி, s. A lascivious, idle fellow, a vagabond, a pest. 2. One not to be relied on, a changeling, man without character. ஆறுகட்ட, inf. To construct a dam across a river, construct the banks of a river. ஆறுகாட்டி, s. A guide, pilot, வழிகாட்டி. ஆறை--ஆற்றூர், s. The name of a town in the Carnatic. (p.) ஆறைநகர்காவலன், s. The king of that town. ஆற்றங்கரை, s. The bank of a river, shore of a river. ஆற்றிடைக்குறை, s. Blank, or dried spots in a river, an inlet, ait, அரங் கம்; [ex இடை, intermediate, et குறை, wanting.] ஆற்றிடைப்பட, inf. To be in the way, வழியிலிருக்க. 2. To meet in the way, வழியெதிர்ப்பட. (p.) ஆற்றுக்காலாட்டியர், s. Agricultural women of low caste, உழத்தியர். (p.) ஆற்றுக்கால், s. A dike, channel for conveying water to the fields, ஆற்று வாய்க்கால். ஆற்றுச்சுழி, s. A whirlpool, vortex, ஆற்றுநீர்ச்சுழி. ஆற்றுச்செருப்படி, s. A small water-plant, ஓர்பூடு. ஆற்றுணா, s. Rice tied up for a journey, கட்டுச்சோறு. (p.) ஆற்றுத்தும்மட்டி, s. Colocynth, பேய்க்கொம்மட்டி, Citrullus colocynthis, L. ஆற்றுநீர்ப்பொருள்கோள், s. The natural construction of a sentence. See பொருள்கோள். ஆற்றுநெட்டி, s. The நீர்ச்சுண்டி, a water-plant, Aeschynomene paludosa. ஆற்றுப்பச்சை, s. A curious, greenstone--one of the one-hundred-andtwenty kinds of minerals--as நாகப்பச்சை. ஆற்றுப்படுத்த, inf. To lead, direct or conduct a person into the right way, வழிப்படுத்த. 2. To give advice, to conduct into the path of virtue, நன் மார்க்கத்திலுட்படுத்த. (p.) ஆற்றுப்படை, v. noun. The act of conducting, directing, &c., either physically or morally. 2. A poem, the object of which is to conduct one to a superior. விறலியாற்றுப்படை, s. A songstress directing another to a benevolent man. பாணராற்றுப்படை, s. A singer directing another to a patron. கூத்தராற்றுப்படை, s. An actor on the stage directing another to a generous man. பொருநராற்றுப்படை, s. A buffoon directing another to a prince. ஆற்றுப்பாசி, s. A water-plant, ஓர்பூடு, Caulinia indica, L. ஆற்றுப்பித்தல்--ஆற்றோரம், s. Side or bank of a river. ஆற்றுப்பூவரசு, s. A tree, ஓர்மரம், Trewia nudiflora, L. ஆற்றுப்பெருக்கு, s. A swelling of a river. ஆற்றுமடை, s. The channel or bed of a river, ஆற்றுக்காலின்மடை. ஆற்றுமரி, s. A shrub, நீருமரி. ஆற்றுமல்லிகை, s. A species of the Arabian Jasmin, ஓர்மல்லிகை, Jasminum sambac. ஆற்றுமுகத்துவாரம், s. The mouth of a river. ஆற்றுமுள்ளி, s. A thorny plant growing by the river, ஓர்பூடு, Dilivaria ilicifolia. ஆற்றுமேலழகி, s. A plant, ஓர்பூடு, Celsia coromandeliana, L. ஆற்றுவாளை, s. A river-fish. See வாளை. ஆற்றெதிர்ப்பட, inf. To meet on the road. ஆற்றொழுக்கு, v. noun. The flowing of a river, stream, current, ஆற்றுநீரோ ட்டம். 2. Rules following each other in regular and natural order, (lit.) the flowing of a river--one of the four aspects of a grammatical rule. See சூத்திர நிலை. தீயாறுடையான், s. An immoral man. நல்லாறுடையான், s. A moral person, one whose conduct is agreeable to rule. சிற்றாறு, s. A rivulet, a brook. 66)

(தத்துவ-24.) Office, function, operation--as the evolving, carrying forward and reduction of nature by the deity, கடவுளின்முத்தொழில். இருதுசாந்தி--இருதுசாந்திக்கலியா ணம், s. uruvu (p. 65) கிறேன், உருவினேன், வேன், உருவ, v. a. To unsheath, draw out of a case or sheath, வாள்முதலியவற்றையுருவ. 2. To draw between the finger and the thumb--as a hair, thread, straw, &c., to free it from oil, moisture, &c.; or a necklace, to remove the beads; or a tamarind twig, to remove the leaves, &c., தழைமுதலிய வுருவ. 3. To draw the hand with pressure down a limb, or any part of the body, to allay pain, inflammation, &c., also down a pole, or other cylindrical body, சுளுக்குமுதலி யவற்றிற்குஉருவ. 4. To loosen or tighten a noose, கயிற்றையுருவ. 5. To pierce through, penetrate, pass through, enter, or transfix, --as an arrow, a needle, &c., ஊடுருவ. உருவினவாளுடனேவந்தான். Strip off the potherbs or greens. ஆற்றையுருவநடக்க. To ford, or wade through a river. உருவக்குத்த, inf. To stab, pierce, transpierce, transfix. உருவத்துளைக்க, inf. To bore through, or into, as with an instrument, or as beetles and other insects. உருவத்தைக்க, inf. To stitch through. 2. To nail through, transfix. 3. To pierce, or pass through--as a thorn, a weapon, a nail, &c.; ex. ஆணியுரு வத்தைத்தது, the nail is gone through. உருவுண்டுபோக, inf. To slip off-as beads from a string, to become loose, or to slip through, or become tight as a noose. உருவுதடம், s. [prov.] A noose, சுருக்கு. உருவொளி, s. Transparency, translucency. 41)

uvṭṭu (p. 66) கிறேன், உவட்டினேன், வேன், உவட்ட, v. n. To nauseate, loathe, வெறுக்க. 2. To overflow, pour forth--as a water-fall, fountain, &c., to flow--as the head of the tide, பிரவாகிக்க. 3. To rise-as the surf, பெருக்கெடுக்க. உவட்டியுந்திடுதிரைப்புனல். The overflowing rushing wave. (ஸ்காந்.) நெஞ்சையுவட்ட, inf. To feel nausca, to loathe, to be sea-sick. உவட்டு, v. noun. ēntu (p. 79) கிறேன், ஏந்தினேன், வேன், ஏந்த, v. a. To sustain, support, hold up, to carry in the hand--as a weapon, &c., to endure, to sustain a character, reputation, &c.; to support--as a beam, pillars, &c., தாங்க. 2. To raise or spread out hands --as a beggar; to raise a thing with the hands spread, கையேந்த. 3. To catch or receive in the hands or arms, to receive as flowing water, rain, &c., with the hands or with a vessel in the hands, பாத்திரமுதலி யவற்றையேந்த. 4. To hand up with extended arms, கையிலேந்திக்கொடுக்க. 5. v. n. To be elevated, exalted, உயர. ஏந்தியகொள்கையார். Persons of exalted character. (குறள். அதி. 9.) கையேந்திநிற்க. To stand begging with the arms extended. முன்றானையேந்தியிரத்தல். Spreading a corner of the cloth and begging. ஏந்திக்கொள்ள, inf. To hold up any thing. 2. To give a helping hand. ஏந்திசை, s. [in pros.] One of the three varieties of harmony in a verse consequent on a peculiar combination of metrical feet. ஏந்திசைச்செப்பல், s. The harmony of sounds peculiar to வெண்பா verses composed of வெண்சீர் வெண்டளை; also, a verse of that harmony. ஏந்திசைத்துள்ளல், s. The harmony of sounds peculiar to கலி verses of கலித் தளை; also, a verse of that harmony. ஏந்திசைத்தூங்கல், s. The harmony of sounds peculiar to வஞ்சி verses of ஒன்றியவஞ்சித்தளை; also, a verse of that harmony. ஏந்திசையகவல், s. The harmony of sounds peculiar to அகவல் verses of நேர்நேரியற்றளை; also, a verse of that harmony. ஏந்திழையார், s. Women, the adorned, பெண்கள். (p.) ஏந்துகொம்பு, s. The tusks of an elephant, curved upward and terminating horizontally, யானைக்கொம்பு. 2. A curved palankeen pole, or pole for carrying a load, தாங்குகொம்பு. ஏந்தெழில், s. Surpassing beauty. பிள்ளையேந்த, inf. To take a child from another. 2. To carry a child in the arms. ஏந்தல், v. noun. Holding up, raising, &c., one of the three harmonies. ஏந்தல்வண்ணம், s. A poem in which the same words are repeated for the purposes of clearness and strength, ஓர்சந்தம். ஏந்தானம், s. [prop. ஏந்துதானம்.] A hanging shelf, a rack, grate, shelf to set things on, தூக்கங்கள். 2. The hands, or arms extended forward or locked with another's, to carry a child, a thing, &c., கையிலேந்துகை. ஏந்தானத்திலேகொண்டுபோகிறது. To carry on the hands so extended. ஏந்தி, s. A bearer, supporter, one invested with, கையேந்துபவன்--used in combination only. 23)

oẕuku (p. 84) கிறது, ஒழுகினது, ம், ஒழுக, v. n. To flow, நீர்முதலியவோட. 2. To go, pass, walk, செல்ல. 3. To act, behave, maintain a course of conduct, act according to rule, to behave well, நெறிப்படிநடக்க. 4. To be long, நீள. (p.) 5. To leak, drop as water, fall by drops, trickle down, drip, drop through, to be shed, தொளைவழி யாயொழுக. ஒழுகுபொற்கொடிமூக்கு. The nose of the damsel who resembles a beautiful long creeper. (நைட.) ஒழுகொளிவிரிக்குங்கதிர்மணி. The radiant gem which diffuses flowing light. கூற்றமேயில்லத்திருந்தொழுகாப்பெண். But an unfaithful wife is to the household as death. பன்மார்புசேர்ந்தொழுகுவார். Those who habituate themselves to the embraces of many-- (நாலடி.) அதிரசமொழுகுங்கனிகள். Fruits flowing with much honey. குடமொழுகுகிறது. The vessel leaks. ஒழுகிசை, s. A flowing kind of melody in poetry in which nothing discordant occurs, பாவினோசையுளொன்று. ஒழுகிசைச்செப்பல், s. A poem consisting of வெண்சீர்வெண்டளை and இய ற்சீர்வெண்டளை. ஒழுகிசையகவல், s. A kind of அகவல் verse composed of நேரொன்றாசிரிய த்தளை and நிரையொன்றாசிரியத்தளை. ஒழுகுவண்ணம், s. A cadence which flows in an easy and pleasing style, ஓர்சந்தம். ஒழுகல், v. noun. Flowing. 2. Leaking, dropping, a leak. 3. Behavior. 4. Length. 5. Height. ஒழுகலான், appel. n. He who does not conduct himself virtuously (நீதிநெறி.) வாய்நீரொழுகல், v. noun. Drivelling. ஒழுக்கு, v. noun. Leaking, dropping, dripping, ஒழுகுகை. 2. Flowing, flow, நீர்முதலியவோடுகை. 3. The passing of urine in drops. ஒழுக்குக்குவைத்தசட்டிபோல். Like a vessel set to catch the water from a leak-spoken of one supported at the expense and pleasure of another. ஒழுக்குமாற்ற, inf. [prov.] To stop leak. ஒழுக்குவிழ, inf. To drop as water from a leak, to leak. ஒழுக்கெறும்பு, s. A species of large black ants which follow one another in a train. 8)

ōṭu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஓடினேன், வேன், ஓட, v. n. To run, flee, flee away, pass quickly, விரைந்துசெல்ல. 2. [used with the impers. terminations.] To grow long, extend, be long, go far, நீள. 3. To divide, split, crack, வெடிக்க. ஓடவுமாட்டான் பிடியுங்கொடான். He will neither run, nor suffer himself to be caught. அவனுக்குஎழுத்துநடையோடாது. He cannot read freely. ஊரோடுகையிலொக்கவோடு. Run when your fellow-countrymen do; i. e. do as others do. வேரோடுகிறது. The root runs (into the ground). கப்பலோடுகிறது. The ship is sailing, is under sail. ஓடவைத்தல், v. noun. Refining metals, புடம்வைத்தல். இழிவினோடொன்றிநின்றவாடகத்தையோடவைக் குமாறுபோல். As refining gold spoiled by mixture with the same metal of inferior quality. (பார.) ஓடவைத்தபொன், s. Refined gold. ஓடாணி, s. [in jewelry.] A pin or bolt passed into an ornament as a fastening, ஆபரணக்கடைப்பூட்டு. ஓடித்திரிய, inf. To run about. 2. To assume airs. 3. To take great pains, &c., to attain an object. ஓடிப்படர, inf. To run and spread as a creeper. ஓடிப்பிடிக்க, inf. To overtake in running. ஓடிப்போக, inf. To run away. ஓடியாடிப்பார்க்க, inf. To go about, to endeavor. அவன்ஒருஉத்தியோகத்திற்கோடியாடிப்பார்க்கிறா ன். He goes about in pursuit of a situation. ஓடியுறைய, inf. To congeal gradually, இறுக--chiefly used in the past. கஷாயமெல்லாமோடியுறைந்தது. The decoction is all congealed. ஓடிவர, inf. To approach at a running pace. ஓடிவிறைக்க, inf. To extend--as stiffness over the body through cold, முழுதும்விறைக்க. ஓடிவெளிக்க, inf. [prov.] To be dispelled--as clouds; to clear--as the sky, முகில்பரந்தொழிய. 2. To be discovered--as fraud, theft, &c., களவுவெளிப்பட. அவர்வஞ்சகமெல்லாமோடிவெளித்துப்போயிற்று. He has discovered the imposition, &c. மழையோடிவெளித்துப்போயிற்று. The appearance of rain is past away, the sky is become clear. ஓடுதாவடி, s. Bustle and confusion in preparing--as for a journey, &c., going abroad--as for business, &c., in a time of bustle, &c., கலக்கம். ஓடுதாவடிப்படுதல், v. noun. Being in a bustle--as in preparing for a journey, &c. ஓடுபந்தல், s. [prov.] A moveable canopy supported on cords, &c., நடைக் காவணம். ஓடுவிப்புருதி, s. A running cancer, ஓர்புண். ஓட்டம், v. noun.
