aṭi (p. 8) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To beat, lash, smite, scourge, stamp, blow or beat as wind, வீச. 2. To defeat, overcome, wash away, carry away as waves, flowing water, &c., to flap, (as with wings) மோத. 3. [vul.] To kill, slay, slaughter, கொல்ல. 4. To fasten, make firm, drive in, அறைய. 5. To act with force and energy, make thorough work of, முயற் சியுடன்செய்ய. 6. v. n. To emit as a scent, வாசனையடிக்க--Note. This word joined to other verbs increases their intensity, as, மழையடித்துப்பெய்கிறது, It rains very hard. பேச்சிலேயடித்துவிட்டான், He confuted by argument,--spoke with fluency and overwhelming eloquence. அடித்துச்சொல்லிக்கொண் டுபோ, Speak fast, forcibly, fluently, &c. Added to neuter infinitives, it makes them active, as, சிதறடிக்க, to disperse. அடிகாற்று, s. [prov.] A very powerful wind, a strong gale, a tempest. அடித்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To beat one's self. அவனுக்கு அதிஷ்டம் அடிக்கிறது. Good fortune abounds to him. 4)

aṭaiccu (p. 8) கிறேன், அடைச்சினேன், வேன், அடைச்ச, v. a. To adorn the head with flowers, stick flowers in the hair, மலர்சூட்ட. (p.) கண்ணறுநெய்தலுங்கதுப்புறவடைச்சி, Sticking in their hair the mellifluent and fragrant neythal flowers. (In சிலப்பதிகாரம்.) 24)

ūẕi (p. 71) s. The periodical termination of a great age, or the time of the universal deluge and destruction of all things, the end of the world, உகமுடிவு. 2. A very long time, நெடுங்காலம். 3. (p.) Lifetime, உறைகாலம். 4. The earth, பூமி. ஊழிபெயரினுங்கலங்காருரவோர். Though the world should come to an end, the sages will not deviate from their purposes. ஊழியுள்ளளவும். Through all eternity, lit. to the end of an age. உனக்கூழிவர. may you die--an imprecation. நீடுழிவாழ்க. May you live long. ஊழிகாலம், s. A very long time, ages without number, நெடுங்காலம். (சத. 2.) ஊழிக்காய்ச்சல், s. An epidemic fever, or pestilence supposed to be produced by a malignant demon, தொத்து சுரம். ஊழிக்காற்று, s. A destructive wind that prevails at the end of the world, யுகமுடிவிலுண்டாகுங்காற்று. 2. A demon, or bad vapor that causes epidemic diseases, pestilence, &c., விஷக்காற்று. ஊழித்தீ, s. The deluge, or submarine fire, usually described as a mare dwelling in the sea and breathing fire, by which, at the end of every quadruple age, the fire is consumed, வட வைத்தீ. ஊழிநீர், s. The water which prevails at the last deluge, described as rain poured down from the seven species of clouds united, also as the water of the circumfluent sea, உலகமுடிவிலுண்டாகுஞ்ச லப்பிரளயம். ஊழிநோய், s. A pestilence induced by a malignant demon, தொத்து வியாதி. ஊழியூழிகாலம், s. From age to age, eternity. 2)

A plant whose flower shoots up in the form of a style, கூத்தன்குதம்பை, Microrhyncus sarmentosus, L. மடக்கெழுத்தாணி--குண்டெழுத் தாணி--மடிப்பெழுத்தாணி--நெல்லிக்காயெழுத் தாணி--தேரெழுத்தாணி--வாரெழுத்தாணி--குட வெழுத்தாணி, s. Writings, documents, உடன்படிக்கைப்பத்திரம். எழுத்துக்குற்றம், s. Orthographical errors in speaking, writing, &c., spoken chiefly of false interpretation, &c., of the Puranas or other writings deemed sacred, எழுத்திலக்கணவழு. எழுத்துக்கூட்ட, inf. To spell, join letters. எழுத்துக்கூட்டாமல்வாசிக்க, inf. To read fluently. எழுத்துச்சந்தி, s. Union of letters in the combination of words, எழுத்துப்பு ணர்ச்சி. எழுத்துச்சாரியை--எழுத்தின்சாரி யை, s. Particles employed to express the names of the letters--as அ with the consonants; கரம், காரம் and கான் with the short letters and sometimes with the consonants; காரம் with the long vowels and கான் with ஐ and ஔ. In common use, ன is used with the short, and ஆன and அன்னா with the long letters. Some other forms are also given in ancient grammars and they are also occasionally used. எழுத்துச்சுருக்கம், s. A kind of play on letters by omitting one after another in regular succession, and thus changing the sense, ஓரணி. எழுத்துச்சேலை--எழுத்துப்புடவை, s. A woman's fancy dress whether printed or embroidered, சித்திரவஸ்திரம். எழுத்துத்திரிதல், v. noun. Permutation of letters--the change of one letter for another according to grammatical rules, for the purposes of euphony, மூவிகாரத்தொன்று. எழுத்துநடை, s. Easy and fluent reading. எழுத்துப்படிய, s. inf. To become trained--as the hand to writing; to have a settled hand. எழுத்துப்பதிக்க, inf. To indent in writing, பதியவெழுத. 2. To enter, write, imprint, settle an affair by writing. எழுத்துப்பதிய, inf. To be indented--as writing, engraving. 2. To be entered, written. எழுத்துப்பிழை--எழுத்துப்பிசகு, s. Error in spelling. எழுத்துப்பொருத்தம், s. The five classes into which the letters are superstitiously divided. (See தசப்பொருத்தம்.) 2. Choosing a name for a child so as to begin with one of the letters ascribed in astrology to the lunar mansion, under whose influence the child is supposed to have been born, பிறந்தநட்சத்திரத்திற்குப் பொருந்தப்பெயரிடுகை. எழுத்துமடக்கு, s. Repetition of, the same letter in a verse, ஓரணி--as நா நாநாதம்கூடிசைநாடுந்தொழிலேவாய். எழுத்துவருத்தனம், s. A kind of diversion by means of poetry, a play on letters, the meaning changing as letters are added. See மிறைக்கவி. எழுத்துவாசனை, s. The art of reading and writing, எழுத்துநடை. எழுத்துவேலை, s. Chintz-painting, சீலையின்மீதெழுதுகை. 2. Writing, transcribing, copying, எழுதுந்தொழில். எழுத்தொலி--எழுத்தோசை, s. The sound of a letter. நுணுக்கெழுத்து, s. A character or letter written unintelligibly. கிறுக்கெழுத்து, s. A letter erased, cancelled; a letter badly written. கூட்டெழுத்து, s. Double letters, letters written together in a contracted form--as 9 for க்க; ட்ட for ட்ட; ? for த்த, &c. நீர்மேலெழுத்து, s. An inscription on the water--a simile expressive of that which is evanescent. கல்மேலேழுத்து, s. An inscription on a stone expressive of that which is stable and enduring. நல்லோரொருவர்க்குச்செய்தவுபகாரங் கன்மேலெழுத்துப்போற்காணுமே--அல்லாத ஈரமிலாநெஞ்சத்தார்க்கீந்தவுபகாரம் நீர்மேலெழுத்திற்குநேர். The valued favors the deserving gain, Like sculptures in eternal rock remain; Of virtue's tribute charity is sure: But kind attentions to the worthless shown, Who debts and duties evermore disown, Like letters written in the wave endure. முதுவெழுத்து--தேறியவெழுத்து, s. Matured well-formed writing. நிலவெழுத்து, s. Letters written on sand. இளவெழுத்து, s. An immature hand not yet formed. சுட்டெழுத்து, s. A demonstrative letter. நெட்டெழுத்து, s. A long sounding letter. சார்பெழுத்து, s. Depending letters of which there are ten kinds, viz.: 1. உயிர்மெய். 2. ஆய்தம். 3. உயிரளபு. 4. ஒற்ற ளபு. 5. குற்றியலிகரம். 6. குற்றியலுகரம். 7. ஐகாரக்குறுக்கம். 8. ஔகாரக்குறுக்கம். 9. மகரக் குறுக்கம். 1. ஆய்தக்குறுக்கம். முதலெழுத்து, s. ōṭu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஓடினேன், வேன், ஓட, v. n. To run, flee, flee away, pass quickly, விரைந்துசெல்ல. 2. [used with the impers. terminations.] To grow long, extend, be long, go far, நீள. 3. To divide, split, crack, வெடிக்க. ஓடவுமாட்டான் பிடியுங்கொடான். He will neither run, nor suffer himself to be caught. அவனுக்குஎழுத்துநடையோடாது. He cannot read freely. ஊரோடுகையிலொக்கவோடு. Run when your fellow-countrymen do; i. e. do as others do. வேரோடுகிறது. The root runs (into the ground). கப்பலோடுகிறது. The ship is sailing, is under sail. ஓடவைத்தல், v. noun. Refining metals, புடம்வைத்தல். இழிவினோடொன்றிநின்றவாடகத்தையோடவைக் குமாறுபோல். As refining gold spoiled by mixture with the same metal of inferior quality. (பார.) ஓடவைத்தபொன், s. Refined gold. ஓடாணி, s. [in jewelry.] A pin or bolt passed into an ornament as a fastening, ஆபரணக்கடைப்பூட்டு. ஓடித்திரிய, inf. To run about. 2. To assume airs. 3. To take great pains, &c., to attain an object. ஓடிப்படர, inf. To run and spread as a creeper. ஓடிப்பிடிக்க, inf. To overtake in running. ஓடிப்போக, inf. To run away. ஓடியாடிப்பார்க்க, inf. To go about, to endeavor. அவன்ஒருஉத்தியோகத்திற்கோடியாடிப்பார்க்கிறா ன். He goes about in pursuit of a situation. ஓடியுறைய, inf. To congeal gradually, இறுக--chiefly used in the past. கஷாயமெல்லாமோடியுறைந்தது. The decoction is all congealed. ஓடிவர, inf. To approach at a running pace. ஓடிவிறைக்க, inf. To extend--as stiffness over the body through cold, முழுதும்விறைக்க. ஓடிவெளிக்க, inf. [prov.] To be dispelled--as clouds; to clear--as the sky, முகில்பரந்தொழிய. 2. To be discovered--as fraud, theft, &c., களவுவெளிப்பட. அவர்வஞ்சகமெல்லாமோடிவெளித்துப்போயிற்று. He has discovered the imposition, &c. மழையோடிவெளித்துப்போயிற்று. The appearance of rain is past away, the sky is become clear. ஓடுதாவடி, s. Bustle and confusion in preparing--as for a journey, &c., going abroad--as for business, &c., in a time of bustle, &c., கலக்கம். ஓடுதாவடிப்படுதல், v. noun. Being in a bustle--as in preparing for a journey, &c. ஓடுபந்தல், s. [prov.] A moveable canopy supported on cords, &c., நடைக் காவணம். ஓடுவிப்புருதி, s. A running cancer, ஓர்புண். ஓட்டம், v. noun. One written in the form of inter-linked curves. சதுரங்கபந்தம். One in the form of squares. சுழிகுளம். Verses written in a winding manner. நாகபந்தம். A poem in the form of intertwined snakes, &c. சித்திரக்காரன், s. A carver, painter. சித்திரகூடம், s. An ornamented or painted room, or hall with pictures, --as சித்திரசாலை.--Note. This term is applied to the temple at Chillumbram, and a mountain in Bundelcund where Rama abode in his exile. சித்திரக்குள்ளன், s. A cunning or shrewd dwarfish person. (c.) சித்திரங்கொத்த--சித்திரம்வெட்ட, inf. To carve, sculpture, grave, &c., on a plain surface. சித்திரசொரூபம், s. An image, an idol, a carved statue, a picture. சித்திரதீபம், s. A painted candle or taper. சித்திரதீபம்போலிருந்து தியானிக்கிறான். He sits meditating, motionless as a painted taper. சித்திரத்தையல், s. Fancy needle work. 2. As சித்திரப்பாவை. சித்திரத்தேர், s. An ornamented car. சித்திரந்தீர--சித்திரந்தீட்ட, inf. To carve or engrave any figures on wood or stone. சித்திரப்படம், s. A picture. 2. (p.) Variegated, painted or printed cloth, எழுத் துப்புடவை. சித்திரப்படாம், s. Veriegated, painted cloth. 2. A book of pictures, folds of paintings for amusement. (p.) சித்திரப்பதிமை--சித்திரப்பதுமை, s. An anagram, as ஞிமிறு for மிஞிறு. சித்திரரேகை, s. Ornamental lines drawn on the body of a person. 2. One of the lines in the hand. 3. The wife of Kuvéra, குபேரன்மனைவி. சித்திரர்--சித்திரக்காரர், s. Fancy painters, portrait painters, limners, embroiderers. 2. Artizans, carvers, sculptors, engravers, சிற்பர். 3. Carpenters, தச்சர். சித்திரவதை--சித்திராக்கினை, s. Cutting and slashing in battle, prolonged butchery, cutting off member after member. 2. Ingenious and varied torture in inflicting death. (c.) சித்திரவித்தாரன், s. [prov.] தட்டிலும்வீச்சிலுங்காரியம்பார்க்க. To make a display and shift the expense on others. தட்டிலேவயிறுவளர்க்க. To support one's self at another's expense. தட்டுக்காரன், s. A rogue, a cunning fellow. 2. An evader, a prevaricator. தட்டுத்தட்ட, inf. To give a tap. 2. To evade. 3. To thwart or frustrate. 4. To act dexterously. தட்டுத்தடவல், v. noun. As தட்டல்த டவல், which see. தட்டாயிருக்க, inf. To be destitute, to be in straits. செலவுக்குத்தட்டாயிருக்கிறது. We are in want of the means of subsistence. தட்டுக்கொட்டு, v. noun. To nod the head in approval, or shake it in displeasure. தலயடி--தலையடிப்பு, v. noun. Trouble, vexation, annoyance. 2. The first threshing of corn, by beating the head of the sheaf against the ground. தலையடிக்க, inf. To be troubled with, to be the cause of trouble to one. தலையணை, s. A cow that has calved but once. தலையுடைக்க, inf. To break the head; i. e. to rack the brains and take great trouble in calculations, intricate business, &c. எவ்வளவாய்த்தலையுடைத்துக்கொண்டாலுங்கே ட்கிறானில்லை.
