aṭi (p. 8) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To beat, lash, smite, scourge, stamp, blow or beat as wind, வீச. 2. To defeat, overcome, wash away, carry away as waves, flowing water, &c., to flap, (as with wings) மோத. 3. [vul.] To kill, slay, slaughter, கொல்ல. 4. To fasten, make firm, drive in, அறைய. 5. To act with force and energy, make thorough work of, முயற் சியுடன்செய்ய. 6. v. n. To emit as a scent, வாசனையடிக்க--Note. This word joined to other verbs increases their intensity, as, மழையடித்துப்பெய்கிறது, It rains very hard. பேச்சிலேயடித்துவிட்டான், He confuted by argument,--spoke with fluency and overwhelming eloquence. அடித்துச்சொல்லிக்கொண் டுபோ, Speak fast, forcibly, fluently, &c. Added to neuter infinitives, it makes them active, as, சிதறடிக்க, to disperse. அடிகாற்று, s. [prov.] A very powerful wind, a strong gale, a tempest. அடித்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To beat one's self. அவனுக்கு அதிஷ்டம் அடிக்கிறது. Good fortune abounds to him. 4)

The eight special advantages; viz. 1. ரூபம், beauty. 2. சம்பத்து, acquisitions. 3. வித்தை, skill. 4. விவேகம், wit, ingenuity. 5. குணம், good disposition. 6. தனம், gold. 7. நல் லகுலம், good caste. 8. வயது, age. அஷ்டதானபரீட்சை, s. One of the ten அவத்தை--talking much of a loved one. ஆக்கப்பெயர், s. Nouns or names given at pleasure, arbitrary signs differing slightly from the pure, இடுகுறிப்பெயர். It is of two kinds; viz.: 1. இடுகுறியாக்கப் பெயர்; as முட்டை, though already an arbitrary sign to denote an egg has yet the signification of Subramanian, as a name given to him subsequently by பொய்யாமொழிப்புலவர், at his own request. 2. காரணவாக்கப்பெயர்; as மலைமகண்மகன், the son of Parvati--the above Subramanian himself. ஆக்கப்பொருள், s. A meaning given to a word or phrase not originally and directly belonging to it, ஆகுபெயர்ப் பொருள். ஆக்கவினைக்குறிப்பு, s. A verb indicating a natural change of state or quality, ஓர்குறிப்புவினை, as இவன் நல்லவனாயிருக் கிறான். 22) *

ām (p. 39) s. One of the poetic expletives, சாரியை. 2. An expletive, அசைநிலை. 3. A termination of the first person plural, in verbs of both classes, தன்மைப்பன்மைவி குதி. 4. A termination of the plural of verbs embracing the first and second person, உளப்பாட்டுத்தன்மைப்பன்மைவிகுதி. 5. A contraction of ஆகும், used to denote a quotation--as பெரியவனாம், it is said 'he is great.' 6. A contraction of the future of ஆ, in the third person neuter. 7. A particle of assent, yes; it is often doubled --as ஆம் ஆம், written, ஆமாம், and contracted to ஆமா. 8. A particle of comparison, ஓர் உவமவுருபு--as அல்லாங்குழலாள், a woman whose hair is black as darkness. (p.) வந்தாம். We came. பணியுமாமென்றும் பெருமை. Greatness is always humble. நானும் நீயுஞ்சென்றாம். I and you went. ஆங்காலம், s. The season when fortune favors and all things prove successful. ஆந்தனையும்--ஆமளவும். As much as possible. ஆமாறு, s. The proper manner of doing a thing, ஆகுமுறை. (p.) ஆமானவன், s. A worthy, competent respectable person, சிறந்தவன். (c.) ஆம்படி. In the manner which is agreeable to, or sufficient for. ஆம்புத்தி, s. Good or suitable advice, discrimination, cleverness, skill. ஆம்போலே. Agreeably to, possibly, perhaps. மண்ணாங்கட்டி, s. A clod. 10)

Do not build too spacious a house. கேட்டவிடத்திலில்லையென்கிறான். On being asked, he said no. இடக்கை--இடங்கை--இடதுகை, s. The left-hand. இடங்காட்ட, inf. To indulge one, to humor, encourage, &c. இடங்காரம், s. The left hand of a double drum, the end of which is glued, முழவினிடப்புறம். இடங்குறுக--இடமிடைய, inf. To be confined, be narrow, close, to want room to pass, &c., இடம்நெருங்க. இடங்கெட்டபாவி, s. An utterly destitute person, a miserable wretch. இடங்கேடு, s. Poverty, தரித்திரம். இடங்கொடாமை, neg. v. noun. Non-concession, non-indulgence, obstinacy, முருட்டாட்டம். 2. An assumed indifference, &c. in one who has done wrong and conceals it, sang froid, பிடி கொடாமை. இடங்கொடுக்க, inf. To give place, yield, admit. 2. To allow, permit, suffer, grant liberty, permission. இடங்கொள்ள, inf. To take up room, இடம்பிடிக்க. 2. To be spacious, capacious, விசாலமாயிருக்க. இடங்கொள்பூதலம். The wide-spread earth. (நைட.) இடங்கோல, inf. To gain a footing, establish one's self in place. 2. To take preparatory measure, make interest with one, &c. 3. To make larger, wider--as in digging a well, a foundation, &c. இடசாரி--இடச்சுற்று, s. Turning, wheeling, &c. to the left--as in dancing, military tactics, horsemanship, &c. இடஞ்சுழி, s. A curl on the body to the left. இடந்தலைப்பாடு, s. One of the துறை in love poetry--the meeting of lovers in a place previously agreed upon. இடமயக்கம்--இடமலைவு, s. Ascribing things to unnatural places--as pearls to the mountain, gold to the sea, &c. திணைமயக்கு. இடமற்றபிள்ளை, s. A child without fortune. இடமானம், s. A spacious place. 2. An honorable place, (Old Dic.) இடமானமானவீடு, s. A spacious house. இடம்பாடு, s. Width, spaciousness, extensiveness, விசாலம். 2. Wealth, prosperity, greatness, affluence, செல்வம். இடம்பார்க்க, inf. To seek or find a place, a situation, an opportunity. இடம்புரி, s. A conch, a species of shell from which bangles, or handrings are cut, சங்கு. 2. A left hand shell, இடம்புரிச்சங்கு. 3. A species of medicinal plant forming a drug, ஓர்பூடு. 4. A rope twisted to the left, இடப்பக்க மாகமுறுக்கியகயிறு. இடவகை, s. A house, வீடு. (சது.) 2. Local affinity. இடவழு, s. [in grammar.] The wrong use of one person for another. இடவன், s. [prov.] The left ox in the yoke, இடம்பூண்டவெருது. 2. The fellow or mate in a yoke of oxen, கூட்டெ ருது. இடவாகுபெயர், s. Place, room, space, position, situation, இடம். 6. A form of the seventh or locative case, ஏழனுருபு. 7. The side of a thing, place, quarter, region, பக்கம். 8. An elephant, யானை. 9. Interim, opportunity, con venient season, season, சமயம். 1. The full moon, பௌரணை. 11. A measure of length, breadth, thickness, &c., நீட்டலளவையிலொ ன்று. 12. One of the three நாடி, or passages for the breath--that through the left nostril, the lunar nerve or vessel, திரிநாடி யிலொன்று. 13. One of the (நாடி) nerves or arteries, தசநாடியிலொன்று. (See நாடி.) 14. (misused for எடை) Weight, gravity நிறை. (See சுழிமுனை, and பிங்கலை.) நல்லாரிடைப்புக்கு. Associating with the good. இடைகலை, s. The breath of the left nostril--as சந்திரகலை. See பிங்கலை. இடைக்கட்டு, s. A girdle, sash. 2. The allowance made for the weight of a vessel before weighing any thing in it. இடைக்காடன், s. A Rishi or சித்தன்--one of the eighteen. இடைக்கிடை. Here and there, interspersed, நடுநடுவே. 2. Of like weight, even weight, equilibrium, நிறைக்குநிறை இடைக்குலநாதன், s. Vishnu as brought up by shepherds. இடைக்குறை, s. [in grammar.] A word shortened in the middle, syncope, elision; as ஓதி for ஓந்தி, camelion. (See விகாரம்.) 2. An island, blank space in a river, &c., ஆற்றிடைக்குறை. இடைக்கொள்ளை, s. Pillaging, plunder, free booty, plundering without regard to either party, நடுக்கொள்ளை. 2. (in Agastiar.) The ravages of an epidemic discase, கொள்ளைநோயான்வருமழிவு. இடைசுருங்குபறை, s. A small drum tapering in the middle, உடுக்கை. இடைசூரி, s. [prov.] Gold or silverbeads interspersed here and there between sacred or other beads, உருத்திராக்க முதலியவற்றிற்கிடையிற்கோத்திடுவது. இடைச்சனி--இடையெழுஞ்சனி, s. To cease or terminate suddenly. இடையறாவன்பு, s. Never-ceasing love. இடையன், s. (fem. இடைச்சி.) A shepherd--as occupying a middle position. இடைப்புத்திபிடரியிலே. Acquired wealth and prosperity, obtained during life, not derived from ancestors. இடையிட்டெதுகை, s. The எது கை or rhyming of the third letter in every other line. இடையிடை. From time to time, at intervals, intervening space. இடையிலேகொண்டுபோக, inf. To take by theft or force, to plunder fruits, furniture, &c. 2. To take off property at one's death--as persons who are not heirs. 3. To seize and carry off property from one who has stolen it--as a constable from a thief. (c.) இடையிலேவயிறுவளர்க்க, inf.
