ūṉṟu (p. 72) கிறேன், ஊன்றினேன், வே ன், ஊன்ற, v. a. To plant, set, fix, place firmly, rest upon with pressure--as a pole in propelling, fixing a boat, a musket, a lever, &c., நிறுத்த. 2. To lay down premises in an argument, நியாயத்திற்குமூலத்தைஸ்தாபிக்க. 3. To grasp, hold, strike root as trees, gain a firm footing, become established in a place, இறுகப்பிடிக்க. 4. v. n. To lean upon, recline, or depend on a staff, a person, &c., சார. 5. To be steadfast, firm, intent upon, உறுதியாய்நிற்க. ஊன்றக்கொடுத்ததடியென்னுச்சியையுடைக்கிறது. The staff which I gave him to lean upon, breaks my head; i. e. the good I have done him has turned out evil. கையூன்றிக்கரணம்போடவேண்டும். To tumble, the hands must be fixed on the ground; i. e. nothing can be done without money, means, &c. மழையூன்றிப்பேய்கிறது. It rains hard or incessantly. மேகங்காலூன்றிமழைபெய்தது. The clouds resting on the horizon poured down torrents. நிலத்திற்சிக்கெனவூன்றியவேர். Roots stuck firmly in the ground. ஒத்தகடப்பாட்டிற்றாளுன்றியெய்து. Exerting themselves in their proper calling. ஊன்றக்கட்ட, inf. To edify, ratify. ஊன்றிக்கேட்க, inf. To interrogate with much emphasis, press for an answer, உறுதியாய்வினாவ. 2. To hear attentively, கருத்தாய்ச்செவிகொடுக்க. ஊன்றிக்கொள்ள inf. To gain a firm footing in a place, office, &c.; to establish one's self, நிலைபெற. 2. To lean or depend upon, சார்ந்திருக்க. ஊன்றிச்சொல்ல, inf. To speak, or pronounce with distinct articulation, உறுதியாய்ச்சொல்ல. ஊன்றித்தாங்க, inf. To press on a pole in stopping, or poling a boat, ஊன்றித்தள்ள. ஊன்றிநடக்க, inf. To walk cautiously, firmly, &c.--as on slippery ground. 2. To walk firmly as one regaining the use of his limbs. 3. To walk with a firm foot so as to secure a quick pace. கோலையூன்றிக்கொண்டுநடக்கிறான். He walks with the assistance of a staff. ஊன்றிப்படிக்க, inf. To read poetry with proper pauses. 2. To sing with proper articulation, emphasis, &c. ஊன்றிப்பார்க்க, inf. To look steadfastly, intently, &c., நோக்கிப்பார்க்க. 2. To consider a thing maturely, to fix the mind intently on the object of consideration, ஆராய்ந்துபார்க்க. 3. To feel, try--as a fruit, &c., pressing it with the hand, கையினாலழுத்திப்பார்க்க. ஊன்றிப்பிடிக்க, inf. To seize firmly, hold tight, இறுகப்பிடிக்க. 2. To mark faults severely, கூர்மையாய்க்குற்றம் பிடிக்க. 3. To hold fast an opinion, பிடி வாதமாயிருக்க. ஊன்றிப்பேச, inf. To speak emphatically or forcibly, உறுதியாய்ப்பேச. இந்தநியாயத்திலூன்றிப்பேசு. Urge this argument, insist upon it. ஊன்றிப்போட, inf. To confirm an opinion, accusation, evidence, &c., ஸ்திரப்படுத்திவிட. ஊன்றிமிதிக்க, inf. To tread cautiously--as one on a well-beam, step firmly, steadily, &c. ஊன்றியெழுத, inf. To press or indent well in writing. ஊன்றிவைக்க, inf. To establish a family. 2. To settle one in life, business, &c. 3. to confirm, settle one in an opinion in a slight degree. ஊன்றுகால், s. A stay, a prop, உதைகால். ஊன்றுகோல், s. A staff, a walking stick, a support, பற்றுக்கோடு. எழுத்தையூன்ற, inf. To put a point over a letter which makes it mute. நாற்றையூன்ற, inf. To set plants.

koṭu (p. 146) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To give, grant, afford, bestow, present, ஈய. 2. In combination, to issue--as commands; கட்டளையளிக்க; to communicate, impart--as knowledge, அறிவிக்க; to supply, give aid, உத விசெய்ய; to stay with the hand, or give support, முட்டுக்கொடுக்க; to create, give existence--as the Supreme Being, சிருட் டிக்க; to give place, to yield, இடங்கொடுக்க. Note.-- This word is generally used in its direct meanings of give, &c., only when there is a receiver, so as to correspond with வாங்க. It is therefore, except as to the elephant, incorrectly, though commonly, used in reference to the lower animals, Strictly also it implies the giving of a superior, to an inferior; but these distinctions are little noticed. When combined with the gerund of another verb or with a noun, the meaning is often modified--as சொல்லிக்கொடுக்க, to instruct, to teach; காட்டிக்கொடுக்க, to betray; முதுகு கொடுக்க, புறங்கொடுக்க, பின்கொடுக்க, to turn the back, to flee. கொடுப்பதொழியேல். Cease not to give [the poor.] கொடுக்கல்வாங்கல், v. noun. Dealing, bargaining. 2. Lending, borrowing, &c. அவனுக்குமெனக்குங்கொடுக்கல்வாங்கலுண்டு.... He and I have business transactions together. கொடுக்கல்வாங்கல்பண்ண, inf. To deal, bargain, barter; to lend and barrow. கொடுக்குமதி, s. [prov.] What is due to one, a debt. கொடாமை, v. noun. Not giving, withholding. கொடான். He will not give. கொடுத்துக்காட்ட, inf. To give and thus unintentionally encourage further application. கொடுத்துக்காட்டினால்விடார்கள். If you give way and encourage them, they will not let you be quiet. கற்றுக்கொடுக்க, inf. [loc.] To teach. சாகக்கொடுக்க, inf. To lose by death-as a mother her child, &c. புருஷனையுமகனையுஞ்சாகக்கொடுத்தேன்..... I have given my husband and son to death--lost them by death. நிறங்கொடுக்க, inf. To tinge, give a color. 2. To be sleek, smooth, plump-as a person in health. பால்பழங்கொடுக்க, inf. To present milk and peeled plantain--as the bride, to the bridegroom; the first food supplied to him. பெண்கொடுக்க, inf. To give a girl in marriage. முடித்துக்கொடுக்க, inf. To finish and give to another. 2. To marry; to give in marriage. வாங்கிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To take and give, that is, buy for another. கொடுப்பன--கொடுப்பனை, v. noun. Giving in marriage, கொள்வனை is receiving or marrying. எங்களுக்குமவர்களுக்குங் கொள்வினைகொடுப்பினை யில்லை. We do not intermarry. 6)

tāraṇai (p. 234) s. Stability, steadiness, firmness, establishment, fixture, உறுதி. 2. One of the eight அங்கயோகம் of the silent, motionless devotee; fixing the mind, constantly on a member of the body as an expedient for keeping the thoughts from wandering. 3. Construction, arrangement, order, system, principles, established order of things either natural or artificial. See நவதாரணை. (Sa. Dha'ran'a.) நவதாரணை, The nine classes of things; existing or established by art; 1. நாமதாரணை, names appellations. 2. வச் சிரதாரணை,(probably) terms of architecture. 3. மாயாதாரணை, things formed by மாயை, as words, appearance of things created. 4. சித்திரதாரணை, paintings or sculpture. 5. செய்யுட்டாரணை, poems, poetry, compositions. 6. நிறை வு குறைவாகிய எண்பொருட்டாரணை, perhaps abstract numbers. 7. சத்ததாரணை, contrivance for the formation or modulation of sounds, as bells, musical instruments. 8. வஸ்துதாரணை, productions of art in general. 9. சதுரங்கதாரணை, a complete army of four kinds of forces. (See சதுரங்கம்.) II. The nine forms of worship practised by the Saiva Yogis. Their classification is: 1. நாமதாரணை, the worship of the Omnipresent God in the form of an image, to which is given his name. அளவிடப்படாதபிர மத்தைநாமத்தினால்வரையறைப்படுத்தல். 2. மாயாதா ரணை, worshipping the Supreme Being, who is unlimited, and without form, by the use of he formule, Maha Vakya (the great speech), accompanied by the entire renunciation of the world. This accords with the practice of the Adwita class of Vedantists, விகாரங்களில்லாதபாமரன் மாவினிடத்தில்புனைந்துரைக்கப்பட்ட பிரபஞ்சவியா பாரமாயையைத்துறப்பதற்குக்கருவியானமகாவாக்கியத் தைப்பொளுணர்ச்சியோடுஉச்சரித்தல். 3. பேததார ணை, an exercise of the Yogi to restrain his bodily affections, by uniting the vital air in the heart, பிராணன், in the podex, அபானன், in the body generally, வியானன், and in the throat, உதானன், these four, with that in the navel, சமானன்; and thus with the inward recital of the mystic O'm, to alter the position of his heart, supposed to be like a lotus flower with eight petals hanging downwards, பலமுறைஇயமாதிகள்செய்து, பிராணன், அபாணன், வியானன், உதானன் என்கிறவாயுக் களைச்சமானவா யுவுடனேசேர்த்து, கீழ்முகமாயிருக்கிற உள்ளக்கமலத் தைமேல்முகமாக்குகை, 4. மந்திரதாரணை, worshipping Siva by the famous five lettered incantation, நமசிவாய--rejecting the mystic O'm--ascribing to him the supremacy, and recognizing the universe as only the manifestation of Siva. Such as do this reject the primitive system, and believe in an all pervading soul of the universe, called Siva, எல்லாவற்றிற்கும் அதிஷ் டானமாய்எவையுமாகிறவன்சிவனேயென்று, பௌ ராணிகமந்திரங்களால்சிவத்தியானஞ்செய்தல். 5. சது ரங்கதாரணை, meditating on the Supreme Being, as one who having purified himself, and suspended his breath, unites the faculties of the mind with the four constituents of the body--earth, water, fire and wind--in the cavity of the crown of the head. This is done when the reason represented by fire; reflection by the wind; the will by water, are joined with resolution or passion, represented by earth, and all co-operate to fix the mind in the air, the seat of Brahma, காய சோதனம்பண்ணுகிறவன் நிலம், நீர், தீ, கால் என் னுஞ்சதுரங்கமாகிய அகங்காரசித்த புத்திமனசென்கிற வைகளைமுறையாக அடக்கி, பின்பு கால்வடிவானம னசை ஆகாயமாகியபிரமத்தானத்தில் சேரும்படிதியா னித்தல். 6. சத்ததாரணை, continual meditation of an ascetic in an immoveable posture, uttering the sounds of அ, உ, ம், or O'm. which represent the deity. This is done while closing the eyes and restraining all the external senses. By the mystic syllable, the வாதநாடி pulse is said to be purified, and its pulsation may be beard. (See கும் பகம்.) பிரமத்தையுணர்த்துகிற பிரணவத்தைத்தியான தாரணசமாதிகளால்அடைந்து, புறக்காணச்செய்கை யற்று, கும்பகத்தானமானவாதநாடியைச்சுத்திபண் ணி, நாதானுசந்தானத்தையடைதல். 7. வஸ்துதார ணை, the mental perception of Brahm, obtained by the firm power of thought, separated from external things, which unites the reason with the will, These combined, produce action or passion, Passion, reason and will are condensed in reflection, by which Brahm is perceived, பிறபொருளையடையாமல்அசைவற்றிருக்கிற மனமானதுபுத்தி, சித்தம், அகங்காரங்கள்மூன்றையு முறையேசேர்த்துக்கொண்டபின், அம்மனத்தால்பிரம த்தைத்தரித்தல். 8. வச்சிரதாரணை, rendering homage to Siva only in the Lingam. rejecting the lower positions which represent Brahma and Vishnu; and renouncing passion, and the corporeal senses, contemplating the divine essence with a fixed mind, பிரமன்வடிவாகியபீடத் தையும், திருமால்வடிவாகியவிவரத்தையும்நீக்கி, இலி ங்கத்தைமாத்திரம்பூசித்தல்என்றால்--அகங்காரத்தை யுஞ்சீவத்துவத்தையும்துறந்து, பரத்துவத்தையேதியா னித்தலாம், 9. சித்திரதாரணை, becoming ripe for absorption and approaching assimilation to the deity, by gaining a knowledge of the twenty-six properties of the body, the soul, and the Supreme Being (ஷட்விம்சகபாவம்). This is obtained by entirely forgetting the austerities practised, repeating continually the மகா வாக்கியம், solely contemplating the benefit to be derived, and then renouncing even that; the soul thus dominates over the immerging principle, arrives at a pure, spiritual knowledge and is merged in the Divinity, சத்தஉச்சரிப்பா லாகியமந்திரப்பிரயோகத்தைநீக்கி, பொருளையே ம னதில் அனுசந்தானம்பண்ணிக்கொண்டு, ஷட்விம் சகபாவத்தையடைந்து, பிராரப்தம் என்கிற கர்மபயன் களைமறந்து, சத்தார்த்தங்களையும்விட்டு, அறிவுமயமாயே இருத்தல். 32) *

A fattened bull; sometimes குண்டுக்காளை. துண்டுவாசிகூட்ட--துண்டுவாகிகூட்டி வாங்க, inf. To recover what was lost. துண்டுவிழ, inf. To be cut into pieces. broken into fragments. 2. [in burlesque.] To happen or befall as a loss in trade, as a theft, &c. அந்தமரம்மூன்றுதுண்டுவிழும். That tree will form three pieces. 2)

tēṟu (p. 260) கிறேன், தேறினேன், வேன், தேற, v. n. To recover strength, vigor, &c.,-as persons, beasts, plants, to grow well-as vegetation; to thrive, improve, செழிக்க. 2. To recover from swooning, intoxication, drooping, தெளிய. 3. To be comforted, consoled, solaced, soothed; to recover from fear, to cheer up, take courage, தைரியங்கொள்ள. 4. To make proficiency, arrive at perfection in a lesson, or in an art, &c., அதிகரிக்க. 5. To be through, accomplished, celebrated, perfect, mature, clear as the mind, to come to perfection, maturity, முதிர. 6. To prove, to result, to amount to--as profit, to turn out clear, பலிக்க.
