arcṉ (p. 22) s. (plu. அரசர்.) A king, prince. இராசா. 2. A supreme master, God, எப்பொருட்குமிறைவன். 3. The planet Jupiter, வியாழம். 4. Soothsayers, புரோகிதர், 3. Generals, சேனாபதியர். 4. Messengers, தூதர். 5. Spies, வேயர். அரசர்க்குத்துணைவர், s. The eight assistants of a king; viz.: 1. Ministers, மந்திரியர். 2. Rulers, கருமாதிகாரர். 3. Relations, சுற்றம். 4. Door-keepers, கடை காப்பாளர். 5. Citizens of his capital, நகர மாக்கள். 6. Commanders, படைத்தலைவர். 7. Cavaliers, இவுளிமறவர். 8. Warriors on elephants, யானைவீரர். அரசர்க்குறுதிச்சுற்றம், s. The five confidential servants of a king, as, Companions, நட்பர்; Brahmans, அந்தணாளர்; Cooks, மடையர்; Physicians, மருத்துவர், and Prophets, நிமித்திகர். அரசர்சின்னம், s. The twenty-one distinguishing marks of a king. See இராசசின்னம். அரசர்நால்வகையியல்பு, s. The four special qualities of kings; viz.: 1. அஞ்சாமை, fearlessness, fortitude. 2. ஈகை, bountifulness. 3. அறிவு, discernment. 4. ஊக்கம், prowess. அரசர்வல்லமை, s. The four acts or powers of kings; viz.: 1. இயற்றல், making acquisitions. 2. ஈட்டல், collecting his revenues. 3. காத்தல், securing them. 4. வகுத்தல், distributing or expending them. அரசனாணை, s. The order or decree of a king, சாசனம். அரசனுயிர்காத்தோன், s. A unicorn, as the fabled protector of a king, காண்டாமிருகம். அரசன்விருத்தம், s. A kind of poem describing the country and magnificence of the king, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். அரசி, s. A queen, இராசஸ்திரீ. 2. A lady, தலைவி. 42)

aḷ (p. 33) க்கிறேன், ந்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To measure, fathom, expore, estimate, அளவுசெய்ய. 2. To apportion, mete out, measure out, பங்கிட. 3. To extend, reach, எட்ட. விசும்பளந்தாண்டுநின்றிடுஞ்சிகரியை. The turrets which reached to the sky. மரக்காலைப்பாய்ச்சியளக்கிறான். He measures thrusting in the marcal; i. e. into the heap. பறைவெட்டியளக்கிறான்--பறைதட்டியளக்கிறான். He measures by striking off the excess of the grain. ஐயனளந்தபடி. As God allots. அளக்கை--அளத்தல், v. noun. Measuring. அளபு, v. noun. Measurement, அ ளவு. 2. The lengthening of the sound of a letter, அளபெடை. அளபெடுக்க, inf. To lengthen a letter, whether vowel or consonant, by the insertion of another short letter or mute, as the case may be, for the sake of the poetry, and sometimes for euphony, as, கழூஉ for கழு; மாத்திரைமிக் கொலிக்க. அளபெடை, v. noun. The lengthening of a letter chiefly for the sake of the verse. There are two ways of doing this. 1. உயிரளபெடை, the addition of a short vowel to a long one, either in the beginning, middle, or end of a word--as ஈஇ கை, gift--for ஈகை; படாஅ கை, banner--for படாகை; and குழூஉ, multitude--for குழு. Again this is divided into இயற்கையளபெடை, and செயற்கையளபெ டை. 2. ஒற்றளபெடை, the lengthening of the mutes, ங், ஞ், ண், ந், ம், ன், வ், ய், ல், ள், and ஃ by being repeated twice either in the middle or end of a word when they are placed after one or two short syllables, as அரங்கம், முரஞ்ஞ்சு, மண்ண்ணு, அம்ம்பு, கொள்ள்க, விலஃஃகி. அளப்பம்--அளப்பு, v. noun. Measuring, அளக்கை. 2. (fig.) Fate, destiny, ஊழ். 3. Needless repetition, chatter, அலப்பு. 4. Expressing dissatisfaction, முறுமுறுக்கை. வனிதையரளப்பிலர், The damsels are without number. அளப்பளக்க, inf. To repeat, use needless repetitions, prate, chatter, அ லப்ப. 2. To complain, grumble, express dissatisfaction, முறுமுறுக்க. அளப்பன், s. [prop. அலப்பன்.] A babbler, prater, chatterer, வீணாகப்பேசு வோன். 13)

āṭu (p. 38) s. A goat, sheep, (the word is common to both,) அசம். (c.) 2. The sign Aries of the zodiac, மேடவிராசி. 3. Victory, success, வெற்றி. (p.) ஆடுதின்னாப்பாலை, s. A plant, (lit.) that which the goat will not eat, புழுக்கொல்லி, Aristolochia bracteata, L. See பாலை. ஆடுமாடு, s. Cattle, the mixed multitude of cow and sheep kinds. The varieties are காட்டாடு, a wild sheep; குறும் பாடு, a crump-horned, fleecy sheep; கொடி யாடு, வெள்ளாடு or காராடு, a long legged sheep or goat; செம்மறியாடு, a reddish sheep; பள்ளையாடு, a prolific goat or goat of low size, and வரையாடு, a mountain sheep. ஆட்டிறைச்சி, s. Mutton. ஆட்டுக்கடா, s. A he goat or ram, ஆணாடு. ஆட்டுக்கடாத்தானம், s. The gift of a he goat, with money, to avert or counteract the evil effects of an unpropitious planetary influence--made to a Brahman who is to offer incantations for the party for a certain number of days. ஆட்டுக்கல், s. The bezoar of the sheep, பாஷாணத்தொன்று. ஆட்டுக்கால், s. The அடம்பு creeper. ஆட்டுக்காற்கல், s. Coral stone, கொக்கைக்கல். ஆட்டுக்கிடை, s. A sheep-fold. ஆட்டுக்குட்டி, s. A lamb or kid. ஆட்டுச்செவிப்பதம், s. A certain immature stage in the growth of the kernel of the cocoanut, the maturest state in which the இளநீர் can be eaten, தேங்காய்வழுக்கைப்பருவம். 9)

A Sanscrit auxiliary prefix, forming a component part of a word, வடமொழிமுதனிலையடை--as பிர in பிரசங்கம், உப in உபசாரம், &c. Wils. p. 159. UPASARGA. உபசாந்தம்--உபசாந்தி, s. The disease is become milder. வியாதிக்குபசாந்திசெய்யவேண்டும். A remedy must be applied to mitigate the disease. உபசாந்தமானமருந்து, s. A mild medicine. 2. A medicine calculated to mitigate a disease, also an anodyne. உபசாபம், s. Disunion, வேறுபாடு. 2. Treachery, treason, துரோகம். Wils. p. 154. UPAJAPA. உபசாரகன்--உபசாரன்--உபசாரி, s. A polite person, உபசரிப்பவன். உபசாரம், s. Civility, politeness, urbanity, attention to a guest, affability, blandness, மரியாதை. 2. Salutation, compliment, obeisance, complaisance, வாழ்த்து. 3. Reverence, homage, acts of worship, duty, வழிபாடு. 4. A present, உபகாரம். 5. External honors done to a deity or holy person, including sixteen kinds, சோடசோ பசாரம், viz.: 1. தூபம், burning incense. 2. தீபம், placing lamps (before an idol). 3. நைவேத்தியம், eatables. 4. தாம்பூலம், betel and nut. 5. சந்தனம், sandal wood, &c. for anointing. 6. புட்பம், strewing flowers. 7. கர்ப்பூரம், camphor. 8. சலம், water for the feet, &c. 9. எண்ணெய், oil. 1. கண்ணாடி, mirrors. 11. சாமரை, hair fans. 12. குடை, umbrella. 13. கொடி, flags. 14. விசிறி, fans. 15. ஆல வட்டம், large circular fans. 16. வத்திரம், cloths. Wils. p. 153. UPACHARA. உபசரிக்க, inf. To compliment, show respect, to receive and wait on with marks of attention, treat with civility, உபசாரஞ்செய்ய. 2. to make obeisance, மரியாதைபண்ண. 3. To reverence a deity, perform service--as strewing flowers before idols or holy persons, வழிபட. உபசாரஞ்செய்ய--உபசாரம்பண் ண, inf. To treat with civility. உபசாரஞ்சொல்ல, inf. To give compliments, pay respects, to salute. உபசாரப்பணிவிடை, s. Civility, attention, obeisance. உபசாரமறியாதவன், s. A rude, unpolite, uncivil man. உபசாரவசனம், s. upayam (p. 62) s. Two, both, double, (doubt), இரண்டு. Wils. p. 161. UB'HAYA. 2. Any thing offered or devoted to religious purposes, given to religious mendicants, கோயிற்காணிக்கை. 3. A present, a gift, உபகாரம். உபயகுலம், s. Two castes, two tribes, one born of two castes. உபயகுலசுத்தம், s. Purity in both the ancestral lines. உபயகோமுகி, s. A cow in the act of calving, the donation of which to a Brahman, when the moon is south of the equator, is regarded as very meritorious (lit.) two-faced, or looking both ways, கன்றின்றலையுதயமாய்நிற்கும்பசு. உபயாத்தம்--உபயார்த்தம், s. Double meaning, ambiguity in words or language, இருபொருள். Wils. p. 162. UBHAYARTHAM. உபயமாதம், s. [in astrology.] The four months in which the sun is in the உபயவிராசி, equivocal or intermediate signs, viz.: march, June, September, and December, being of medial influence, உபயவிராசிமாதங்கள். உபயராசி, s. Every third sign of the zodiac considered in astrology as auspicious for building, &c. See இராசி. உபயவாதிகள், s. The plaintiff and defendant in a lawsuit, வாதிபிரதிவாதி கள். 2. The originator and defender of a controversy, தருக்கவாதியும்பிரதிவாதியும். 3. Persons secretly leaning to both parties or sides, இருதிறத்தாரையுஞ்சார்ந்துநிற்போர். உபயவோசை, s. An imitative, reiterated sound--as மடமடெனக்குடிக்கி றான், he drinks with a gurgling sound. 20) *

upāyam (p. 62) s. Means, contrivance, expedient, device, good or bad, skill in accomplishing an object, சூழ்ச்சி. 2. Stratagem, artifice, craft, shift, art, cunning, shuffling, intrigue, தந்திரம். 3. The means for bringing an enemy to terms, of which four are enumerated, viz.: 1. சாமம், conciliatory measures. 2. பேதம், sowing dissension. 3. தானம், gifts, presents. 4. தண் டம், chastisement, punishment (by war), அரசர்க்குரியவுபாயம். 4. [vul.] Smallness, சொ ற்பம். Wils. p. 16. UPAYA. உபாயக்காரன்--உபாயி, s. An artful person, a schemer, contriver, தந்திரக்காரன். உபாயஞ்சூழ, inf. To contrive, scheme. உபாயஞ்சொல்ல, inf. To give counsel. உபாயதந்திரம், s. Devices, craftiness, subtility. உபாயமானவிளையாட்டு, s. Artful cheating in play. உபாயம்பண்ண, inf. To adopt stratagems, to contrive, employ address, use means. உபாயவிலக்கு, s. [in rhetoric.] Artfully endeavoring to prevent an act, by representing the evil which will happen to one's self--as when a wife dissuades her husband from leaving her by declaring that, in case he does, she must die, ஓரலங்காரம். உபாயோபாயம், s. Various means or artifices. 2. Cunning for cunning in retaliation, &c. மோட்சம்பெறுமுபாயம்--மோட் சோபாயம், s. Means for obtaining eternal bliss. 52)

ulvi (p. 66) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. and n. To be sparing in order to leave a supply for others, to forbear, or be reluctant, &c., be bashful in eating, &c., உலோபமாயிருக்க. 2. To evince diffidence in accepting favors, gifts, &c.; to be diffident, or backward in coming into company, கூசியொழுக. 3. To restrain one's self, forbear, ஒறுக்க.--Note. This word seems to be a causative of உலவு in a contracted form. உலவியரமற்சாப்பிடும். Eat without restraint, take as much as you like. சாப்பாட்டையுலவிக்க. To eat food sparingly. அவருடைய முகத்துக்காகவுலவித்துவிட்டுவிட்டேன். One his account I forbore (to act as otherwise I would have done). இங்கேசாப்பிடவுலவிப்பானேன்? Why should you be unwilling to eat here? தன்வயிற்றைத்தானுலவிக்கலாமா? Ought one to deprive himself of necessary food? 8)

erumai (p. 73) s. A buffalo, especially the female, காரான். எருமைப்பால்குடித்தவன். One who has drunk buffalo's milk, a blockhead, மந்தன். எருமைக்கடா, s. A he-buffalo, பகடு. எருமைக்கடாத்தானம், s. A gift of a buffalo. See தானம். எருமைக்கற்றாழை, s. A species of the தாழை, growing in stony places. எருமைக்காஞ்சொறி, s. A plant, ஓர்பூடு, Tragia involucrata, L. எருமைக்கொத்தான், s. A kind of herb, hart's ear, or oleander-leaved cacalia, ஓர்பூடு. எருமைநாக்கு, s. A kind of fish, a sole, ஓர்மீன், Pleuronectes solea, L. எருமைமாடு, s. A buffalo, எருமை. எருமைமுல்லை, s. A kind of shrub, ஓர்முல்லைச்செடி. எருமைமுல்லைத்தீவு, s. An ancient name of Jaffna a district in Ceylon-so called from the above-named shrub. எருமைமுன்னை, s. A tree, ஓர்மரம். Premna mysorensis, L.
