irai (p. 51) s. The food of birds, beasts, and other inferior animals, provender, prey, பறவைமுதலியவற்றினுணவு. 2. A bait, தூண்டிலிரை. 3. [in a low sense.] Food in general, victuals, உணவு. 4. [prov.] Food eaten, sustenance, nutriment, &c. in the system, உண்டது. இரைக்க, inf. To eject food by a voluntary effort--as dogs, &c. இரைகழிய, inf. To evacuate indigested matter--as in cholera. இரைகொடுக்க, inf. To feed cattle, fowls, &c. (in a low sense), to support, maintain. இரைகொள்ளி, s. A gluttonous person, பெருந்தீனியாள். 2. The craw or crop of birds, இரைப்பெட்டி. இரைக்குக்கிடக்க, inf. To lie in wait for prey--as snakes. இரைக்குடர்--இரைக்குடல்--இ ரைப்பை, s. The stomach, ventricle, the maw. இரைசீரணிக்க, inf. To digest food. இரைதேட, inf. To gather food-as birds, to go in quest of prey, &c. இரைதேற, inf. To remain undigested or entire--as food in the stomach. இரைப்பற்று, s. [prov.] Indigested food lodged in the system, indigestion, செரியாதது. இரைப்பெட்டி, s. [prov.] Crop of birds, craw, maw, gizzard, பறவை யாதிகளிரைப்பை. இரைமீட்க, inf. To chew the cud --as cows, &c., அசைபோட. இரையூட்ட, inf. To feed their young ones--as birds. இரையெடுக்க, inf. To gather food --as birds, &c., pick up food, catch prey. 2. To chew the cud. 27)

uṇṭi (p. 59) s. Food, sustenance, eatables, உணவு. 2. Boiled rice, சோறு. 3. The food of carnivorous animals, இரை. (நிகண்டு and திவாகரம்.) 4. (பாரதிதீ.) The food of birds and beasts in general, பற வைவிலங்கிவற்றினுணவு. Four kinds of eating are enumerated, viz.: 1. உண்டல், eating without mastication--as boiled rice, &c. 2. தின்றல், masticating, chewing--as meat, curries, &c. 3. நக்கல், licking--as honey, molasses, lapping. 4. பருகல், drinking, sucking--as a child. Sometimes a fifth is added, viz.: மென்றல், chewing--as spices, pungents, leaves, &c. kept in the mouth. உண்டிசுருங்குதல்பெண்டிர்க்கழகு. It is becoming in a woman to eat little. பேருண்டி, s. A principal meal-as dinner, &c., போசனம். 2. Eating to excess, gluttony, gormandizing, பெருந் தீன். சிற்றுண்டி, s. A light meal--as luncheon, tiffin, பலகாரம். 2. Eating sparingly, சிறுதீன். 3. A style, எழுத்தாணி. கொல்லர்தெருவிலேயூசிமாறவந்தான். He is come to sell needles in the street of the smiths. ஊசிக்கண்--ஊசிக்காது--ஊசித்து ளை, s. The eye of a needle. ஊசிக்காந்தம், s. Loadstone, magnet, இரும்பிழுக்குங்காந்தக்கல். ஊசிக்கார், s. A kind of paddy, thin and long, ஓர்வகைநெல். ஊசிக்கால், s. Uprights in a building set on beams to support the ridge-beam, மச்சுக்கால். ஊசிக்கூடு, s. A needle-case, a tin-case. ஊசிப்பாலை, s. A species of பா லை plant. ஊசிப்புல், s. A kind of grass, ஓர்வகைப்புல். ஊசிமல்லிகை, s. A kind of jasmine, ஓர்வகைமல்லிகை. ஊசிமிடறு, s. A narrow throat like a needle, சிறுதொண்டை. ஊசிமிடறுந்தாழிவயிறும். A throat like a needle and a belly like a washerman's caldron--a glutton. ஊசிமுனை, s. The point of a needle, ஊசிநுனி. ஊசிமுனைநாட்டுமிடமாகிலும்நான்கொடுக்கிறதில் லை. I will give no ground, not even to fix the point of a needle upon. ஊசிமுனையிலேநிற்கிறான். He cannot endure to stay; lit. he stands on the point of a needle. ஊசியோட, inf. To pass the needle and thread through any thing, to sew. துன்னூசி, s. A nail which fastens the ploughshare to the plough. 36)

ūṇ (p. 69) s. Food, உண்டி. 2. Boiled rice, சோறு. 3. Food of beasts, birds, இரை. 4. Sufferings and enjoyments ordained by God and experienced by the soul, as the fruits of action, நன்மைதீமையினால்விளையும் புசிப்பு. (தீ. 297.) ஊணற்றபோதேயுடலற்றுப்போம். The body cannot exist without food. ஊணற்றபோதேயுறவற்றது. Without entertainment friendship ceases. ஊணுக்குமுந்தவேண்டும்கோளுக்குப்பிந்தவேண்டும். Be first at a feast and the last at slander. ஊணன், s. (fem. ஊணி.) A glutton, மிகவுண்போன். 2. One who is too fond of eating, whose object is to fill his belly, போசனப்பிரியன். 3. A barbarian, மிலேச்சன். ஊணன்கருமமிழந்தான். The glutton failed in his object; i.e. the gluttonous will fail in their pursuits. ஊணுறக்கமில்லாதவன், s. One who neither eats nor sleeps. எனக்குஊணுமில்லையுறக்கமுமில்லை. I have neither food nor sleep. ஊண்பாக்கு, s. Betel-nut taken after eating, உண்டபின்றின்பாக்கு. ஊண்பாக்கொழியவீண்பாக்காகாது. Betelnut should be taken only after food. 52)

kḷi (p. 100) s. Joy, gladness, delight, exhilaration, exultation, mirth, jollity, hilarity, மகிழ்ச்சி. 2. Riot, revelling கள்முதலிய அருந்திக்களிக்கை. 3. Wantonness, licentiousness, unrestrained passions, arrogance, சிற் றின்பம். 4. Bewilderment, aberration of mind or intellect, intoxication whether from liquor or circumstances, frenzy, fury, மயக்கம். 5. Toddy, vinous liquor, கள். 6. A person intoxicated with money, learning, liquor, &c., a reveller, செருக்குள்ளவன். (p.) 7. Thick pulp, any soft, thick mass --as thick pap, &c., the quality or consistency of a thick paste or glutinous matter, இறுகியபழச்சாறு. 8. A kind of pap of hasty-pudding, குழம்பு. 9. A kind of pottage hard in itself and made with flour, மாவாற்கிண்டியகளி. களிகிண்ட--களிகிளற, inf. To make களி, pap. களிகூர, inf. To rejoice, exult, மகிழ்ச்சிகூர. களிக்காய், s. Pulpy-fruit, களிப் பானகாய். களிநெஞ்சன், s. A jovial, wanton person. களிப்பாக்கு, s. Areca-nut boiled and dried, அவித்தபாக்கு. களிமண், s. Clay, potter's clay. களிமண்ணடைக்கிறதுபோலடைத்துப்போடுகிறான். He takes in, or swallows up as if he had to fill (a pit) with clay; i. e. he is a glutton, a gormand, a gormandizer. களிமண்தரை, s. Clayey soil. களியர், s. Bacchanaliaus, drunkards, கள்ளுண்டுகளிப்போர். களியர்வண்ணம், s. A poem extolling the advantages of high living, dainty food, vinous liquors, &c., an epicurean poem, ஓர்வண்ணம். களியாட்டு, s. Drunken feasts, bacchanalism, revels, உண்டாட்டு. கேழ்வரகுகளி--கம்புக்களி--சோ ளக்களி, s. Pottage prepared with the flour of different grains. 13)

kẕi (p. 98) s. A kind of thread, cotton, yarn, silk, &c., a hawk, a knot, a tie, நூற் சுருள். 2. Salt-pans, உப்பளம். 3. Shallow sea waters, salt rivers, salt marshes, உப் பாறு. 4. Lute-stick, stick for playing on the lute, a plectrum, யாழினையிசைக்குங்கருவி. 5. A rod, a cudgel, a staff, a branch, a twig, a switch, கொம்பு. 6. adj. and adv. Much, great, excessive, very extensive, மிகுதி. 7. [prov.] A roll of sealing wax, lunar caustic, &c., மெழுகுவர்த்தி. கழிக்கரை, s. Banks of salt rivers, marshes, &c., கழியினதுகரை. கழிக்கரைப்புலம்பல், s. [in erotics.] Persons expressing in a soliloquy a lady's lamentations for, and complaints of, her lover's absence, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். (p.) கழிக்காரை, s. A plant, ஓர்செடி. கழிநிலம், s. Brackish soil, marshy districts bordering on the sea, உவர்த்தரை. 2. Natural salt-pans, உப்பளம். கழிமுகம், s. The mouth of a river, ஆற்றுநீர்க்கழிவு. கழியர், s. Salt makers, உப்ப மைப்போர். 2. kuṇṭam (p. 118) s. A small pot, குடுவை. 2. A large pot, பானை. 3. A pool, well, &c., especially consecrated to some sacred purpose or person, குளம். 4. A deep hole, a pit, குழி. 5. A hole in the ground for receiving or preserving sacrificial fire, &c., ஓமமுதலியகுண்டம். Wils. p. 228. KUN'D'A. குண்டமண்டலம், s. The mystic diagram about the sacred hole in the கிரியா வுத்திரி instruction, &c. குண்டம்பாய--குண்டம்மிதிக்க, inf. To walk on fire--as persons under the influence of religious frenzy, in fulfilment of a vow, &c. யாககுண்டம்--வேள்விக்குண்டம், s. A hole for sacrificial fire. குண்டவண்டன், s. [prov.] A short, thick person. குண்டோதரன், s. A short Bhuta with a large round belly in the army of Siva, பூதகணத்திலொன்று. 2. [in burlesque.] A great-bellied glutton, பெருந்தீனிக்காரன். குண்டோதரன்போலிருக்க, inf. To be full-fed, stuffed up; to have one's lap full. 33)

cāppiṭu (p. 177) --சாப்படு, கிறேன், சாப்பிட் டேன், வேன், சாப்பிட, v. a. To eat, drink, to take food, medicine, betel, &c., உட்கொள்ள. 2. To make a meal, to board, உண்ண; [ex சப்பு, from Sa. Charva.] (c.) பால்சாப்பிட, inf. To take milk. சாப்பாடு, v. noun. Food, diet, victuals for the human species, போசனம். 2. A meal, ஒருவேளைப்போசனம். 3. Board, boarding, புறத்தியிற்சாப்பாடு. சாப்பாட்டுக்குப்பூச்சியம். Nothing to eat. சாப்பாட்டுராமன். A glutton, a gormandizer, (lit.) a gluttonous Rama. 2. A dull, stupid, inactive man, in contempt. சாப்பாடுகொடுக்க--சாப்பாடுபோட, inf. To give food, a meal or victuals. 2. To provide with food, to board. சாப்பாடுசெய்ய, inf. To give a pleasure-party to friends and acquaintances. சாப்பாட்டுக்கழைக்க--சாப்பாட்டுக்குச் சொல்ல, inf. To invite one to take food, as dinner, &c. தடிக்கம்புச்சாப்பாடு, s. [in burlesque.] Switching, flogging with a switch, a ratan, &c. See under தடி. 17)

cōṟu (p. 212) s. Boiled rice, சாதம். 2. Apex of the wild pine-apple resembling boiled rice; also a white spongy substance found in the palmyra, wild al&oe; &c, கற்றாழை முதலியவற்றின்சோறு. (c.) 3. The second lunar asterism. See பாணி. சோறுங்கூறையும்கொடுக்க. To give food and raiment. சோற்றாலெடுத்தசுவர். A wall of rice, food, &c., i. e. the body. வயிற்றுச்சோற்றுக்குவேலைசெய்ய. To serve for daily bread. (Low.) இன்றைக்குச்சோற்றுக்கில்லை. Nothing to eat. சோற்றிறக்கமில்லை. The rice will not go down; i. e. he cannot eat. சோறாக்க--சோறுசமைக்க, inf. to boil rice. சோறிட, s. To set rice before one. 2. To board, feed. சோறுகொடுப்பிக்க, inf. To cause a bride to present boiled rice to the bridegroom, as an essential part of the marriage ceremony among some castes. சோறுகொல்லி, appel. n. A glutton, பெருந்தீனிக்காரன். 2. Green vitriol, அன்ன பேதி. சோறுபடைக்க--சோறுபோட, inf. To set rice on plates, leaves, &c., for eating. (c.) சோறுபொங்க, inf. To cook rice. 2. To boil over, bubble up. சோறுபொலிய, inf. [prov.] To swell or enlarge, as rice in boiling. சோறுவடிக்க, inf. To strain off rice. சோறூட்டல், v. noun. The ceremony of first feeding with rice, performed on an auspicious day. See அன்னப்பிராசனம். சோறூற, inf. [prov.] To be too much soaked, as rice in boiling over insufficient fire. சோற்றகப்பை, s. Ladle for rice, in distinction to that for curry. (c.) சோற்றலகு, s. A wicker strainer for boiled rice. (R.) சோற்றாலாத்தி, s. Boiled rice waved before a person, an idol, a married couple, a great person, &c., to remove the supposed fascination of unlucky eyes. (c.) சோற்றுக்கடன்--சோற்றுதவி, s. Duty or obligation to one for support. சோற்றுக்கத்தளை, s. A kind of fish. See கத்தலை. சோற்றுக்களை, s. Languor after eating. 2. Fainting through want of food. சோற்றுக்கற்றாழை, s. See தாழை. சோற்றுக்காரி, s. A woman who prepares food for one who pays her expenses. (c.) சோற்றுக்குடலை, s. [prov.] See குடலை. சோற்றுக்குவீங்கி, appel. n. A man greedy of food, who will eat any where. சோற்றுக்கூடை, s. A large basket in which rice is served up to a company. சோற்றுக்கை, s. The right hand as used in eating rice, &c.--oppos. to பீச்சைக் கை. (c.) சோற்றுக்கொடை, s. Giving boiled rice as alms to religious mendicants, being the first kind of bounty. சோற்றுச்சட்டி, s. An earthen pan for cooling boiled rice. சோற்றுத்துருத்தி, s. The body; (lit.) a leather bag of rice. (p.) 137)

tiṉ (p. 241) கிறேன், றேன் பேன், ன, v. a. To eat, to feed, to take a meal, உண்ண. 2. [in poetry.] To eat light food, pastries and relishes, &c., சிற்றுண்டிபுசிக்க. 3. To chew, to masticate, மெல்ல. 4. To devour--said of an animal, பட்சிக்க. 5. To eat away, consume, corrode--as white ants, ironmould, rust, &c., அரிக்க. (c.) தின்றதெல்லாஞ்சமித்துப்போயிற்று. What he has eaten is digested; i. e. he ahs forgotten the benefits I have done him. தின்றுகொழுத்துப்போனான். By eating (of my food) he is become fat and saucy. (In abuse.) செல்லுதின்றுவிடும். The white ants will eat away. தின்னாவீட்டில்தின்னி. One who eats with low families. [prov.] மண்தின்றுவிடும். The earth will corrode it. இந்தஎருதுஅந்தஎருதைத்தின்றுவிடும். This ox will surpass that. நேற்றுத்தின்றதீன்அல்லவோ. Is not the (work, &c.) for what ate yesterday; i. e. I want food to day. புல்லைத்தின்னும்மாடுஉதவுகிறதுபோலப்புலியைத்தின் னுஞ்சென்னாய்உதவுமோ. Will a wild dog which kills the tiger be as useful as an ox that eats grass; i e. will any one who lives luxuriously labor like one who takes plain food? யானைத்தின்றவிளாங்களிபோலே. Like the woodapple which the elephant had eaten (swallowed); i. e. hollow, the substance being absorbed through the unbroken shell. தின்பண்டம், s. (com. தீன்பண்டம்.) Eatables, including pastry and fruits. தின்பண்டநல்கல், v. noun. One of the thirty-two acts of charity. See அறம். தின்றல்---தின்னல்--தின்னுதல், v. noun. A eating. தின்றி, s. Eatables, தீன். தின்றிப்போத்து, s. (Tel. திிபோது.) A glutton; (lit.) a well-fed bull. தின்றுகழிக்க, inf. To loathe food from satiety. தின்னாச்சாதி, s. Low castes, with whom it is disgraceful to eat. See சாதி. 69)

tīṉ (p. 244) s. (com. தீனி.) Food, victuals, a meals, உணவு. தீன்பண்டம், s. Eatables, as தின்பண்டம். பெருந்தீனிக்காரன். s. A glutton. 34)

teviṭṭu (p. 256) கிறேன், தெவிட்டினேன், வேன், தெவிட்ட, v. n. To be sated, glutted, overloaded as the stomach, to be cloyed, தேக்க. 2. To loathe from excess, to nauseate, to vomit, வாந்திசெய்ய. 3. To grow full, நிறைய. (c.) 4. (சது.) To think, reflect, நினைக்க. 5. To sound, ஒலிக்க. பார்க்கப்பார்க்கத்தெவிட்டவில்லை. However much it is examined, it never cloys. தெவிட்டாத்தித்திப்பு, s. Sweets that do not cloy. தெவிட்டல்--தெவிட்டு, v. noun. Nausea from sweet things, the sight of medicines, &c., உவட்டு. 2. Loathing of food from satiety, வெறுப்பு. 76)

pātakam (p. 310) s. [poet. பதகம்.] A grievous sin, a heinous crime, துரோகம். W. p. 524. PATAKA. Note. For the five பாதகம், or heinous sins, see பஞ்சபாதகம். Another classification is seven-fold, as given in சதுர கராதி, being apparently the venial sins of the Romanists; சித்தசமுன்னதி, or அகங்காரம், pride; 2.அருத்தலோபம், or உலோபம், avarice; 3. காமம், lust, lasciviousness; 4. வைஷம்மியம் or பகை, hatred, enmity; 5. அசனப்பிரியம், போசனப்பிரியம், gluttony; 6. கோபம் or காய்தல், anger, malice; 7.அனுஷ்டணம் or சோம்பல், idleness, laziness. பாதகத்துரோகி, s. A perfidious villain, an infamous wretch, கொடும்பாவி. பாதகன், s. [plu. பாதகர், fem. பாதகத்தி, பாதகி.] A vile, desperate sinner, துரோகி. பாதகன்முகத்திலேவிழிக்கப்படாது. Look not on a wicked person. 14)
