அங்கம்
angkam (p. 5) s. A limb, member, part or organ of the body, அவயவம். 2. Body, உடல். 3. Mark, sign, அடையாளம். 4. Skeleton, எலும்புக்கூடு. 5. Symmetry, well formed human or other shape as of letters, &c., as பாவனை. 6. (p.) A division of learning comprehending such science as is considered dependent on the Vedas; hence called வே தாங்கம், சாங்கம், உபாங்கம் and பிரத்தியாங்கம். 7. A country, ஓர்தேயம். 8. (p.) அங்கபடி--அங்கவடி, s. Stirrup, குதிரையங்கபடி. (c.) அங்கப்பிரதக்கணம்--அங்கப்பிரதட் சிணம், s. A mode of worship by rolling round a temple after a car, &c., turning to the right, in performance of a vow, &c.; (c.) ex பிர, before, et தட்சிணம், right. அங்கப்பிராயச்சித்தம், s. Expiation for bodily impurity, especially the oblation offered by the heir at the first funeral obsequies to remove the impurity contracted during the period of mourning. (c.) அங்கமாலை, s. A பிரபந்தம் or poem describing the principal members of the body, such as the eye, face, breasts, &c., in the female, and shoulders, arms, breast, &c., in the male. The order of description must be from the feet to the hair of the head, or from the head to the feet. (p.) அங்கயோகம், s. The eight qualities of a Yogi. See யோகம். (p.) அங்கரக்கா, s. அறம்
aṟm (p. 33) --அறன், s. Moral or religious duty, virtue; the performance of good works according to the shasters--including justice, hospitality, liberality, &c., also what is prescribed as the duty to be practised by each particular caste. Compare தருமம். The thirty-two acts of charity are the following; viz.: 1. ஆதுலர்க்குச்சாலை, building houses for the poor. 2. ஓதுவார்க் குணவு, giving maintenance and education. 3. அறுசமயத்தார்க்குண்டி, feeding persons of either of the six religious sects. 4. பசுவுக்கு வாயுறை, feeding cows. 5. சிறைச்சோறு, feeding prisoners. 6. ஐயம், giving alms. 7. தின் பண்டநல்கல், providing for travellers. 8. அறவைச்சோறு, feeding the destitute. 9. மகப் பெறுவித்தல், rendering assistance in childbirth. 1. மகவுவளர்த்தல், nourishing children. 11. மகப்பால்வார்த்தல், giving milk to infants. 12. அறவைப்பிணஞ்சுடுதல், burning or burying the poor. 13. அறவைத்தூரியம், furnishing clothes to the destitute. 14. சுண்ணம், giving chunam to use with betel. 15. நோய்மருந்து, giving medicine to the sick. 16. வண்ணார், paying for washing the clothes of the poor. 17. நாவிதர், the same for shaving. 18. கண்ணாடி, giving a looking glass. 19. காதோலை, giving cadjan or palmyra leaves to women for their ears. 2. கண்மருந்து, giving black paint to women for the eyes. 21. தலைக்கெண்ணெய், giving oil for the head. 22. பெண்போகம், aid to enjoy a woman. 23. பிறர்துயர்காத்தல், redressing injuries. 24. தண்ணீர்ப்பந்தல், keeping water pandals to give drink to the thirsty. 25. மடம், erecting inns or buildings for the reception of Brahmans, pilgrims, &c. 26. தடம், making tanks. 27. சோலை, planting topes, groves, &c. 28. ஆவுரிஞ்சுதறி, erecting stakes at which cows may rub themselves. 29. விலங்கிற்குணவு, feeding all kinds of animals. 3. ஏறுவிடுதல், giving a bull for covering a cow. 31. விலைகொடுத்துயிர்காத்தல், giving money to save life. 32. கன்னிகாதானம், giving assistance towards marriage. (p.) அறஞ்செயவிரும்பு. Desire to do charity. அறக்காடு, s. A desert place for burning the dead, சுடுகாடு. அறக்கொடியோன், s. God; He whose banner is charity, கடவுள். அறங்கடை--அறன்கடை, s. Sin, what is opposed to virtue; nonconformity to the shasters, பாவம். அறங்கடையிற்செல்லார். They who will not enter in the way of vice. அறச்சாலை, s. An alms-house, a hall or room where the thirty-two acts of charity are practised. அறச்செல்வி--அறத்தின்மூர்த்தி, s. Parvati, பார்வதி, famous for alms-giving. 2. A name of தருமதேவதை. அறத்தின்மைந்தன்--அறன்மகன், s. The elder of the five Pandavas. அறத்துப்பால்--அறப்பால், s. A section of the book குறள், which treats of அறம். அறத்துறுப்பு, s. The attributes or constituent parts of charity or virtue, including dispositions and actions. Eight are given; viz.: 1. ஐயப்படாமை, being void of doubt or scepticism. 2. விருப் பின்மை, freedom from covetousness or of inordinate desire for any supposed good. 3. வெறுப்பின்மை, freedom from disgust. 4. மயக்கமின்மை, being void of perplexity. 5. பழியை நீக்கல், avoiding reproaches, being void of censoriousness. 6. அழிந்தோ ரைநிறுத்தல், relieving the distressed or ruined. 7. அறம்விளக்கல், bringing into light the nature of benefaction and expounding it. 8. பேரன்புடைமை, the possession of abundant love. அறத்தைக்காப்போன், s. The god ஐயன். அறநிலை, s. The practice of virtue, a virtuous state or condition, தருமம். 2. One of the eight kinds of marriage --as பிரமமணம். See மணம். அறநிலைப்பொருள், s. One of the six அரசியல்--the collection of revenues justly. 2. Wealth gotten by continuance in a proper course of duty and by industry. அறநிலையறம், s. One of the six அரசியல்--the duty of a king to preserve his subjects from breaking the rules of the respective castes. அறநிலையின்பம், s. One of the six அரசியல்--pleasure from a virtuous course; marrying a virgin of proper age, caste and good manners (including conduct prescribed by the Shasters) and of good disposition. அறநெறி, s. The path of virtue. அறப்புறம், s. A place for the practice of virtuous actions. (See அறச்சாலை.) 2. A hall for learning or reciting the Vedas. அறவர்--அறவோர், s. The virtuous, those celebrated for charity and other good deeds, தருமநெறியோர். 2. Ascetics, துற வோர். 3. Brahmans, பார்ப்பார். 4. Sages, முனிவர். அறவன், s. Buddha, புத்தன். அறவாழி, s. The sea of virtue. அறவாழியந்தணன், s. Siva. 2. Vishnu. 3. Argha. அறவாழியந்தணன்றாள் சேர்ந்தார்க்கல்லாற் பிறவா ழிநீந்தலரிது. It is very difficult to swim and escape from the sea of vice, except for those who worship at the feet of him who is the sea of virtue. அறவாழிவேந்தன், s. God, கட வுள். 2. Argha, அருகன். அறவோன், s. uttrvu (p. 60) s. Permission, grant, leave (of superiors), விடுதலை. 2. A government order, கட்டளை. 3. Answer, reply, விடை. 4. A divine permission suggested in dreams, or revealed by inspiration, தேவோத்தரவு. அவனுக்குக்கதிர்காமத்திற்குப்போகஉத்தரவுகிடைத் தது. He has obtained divine permission to go on a pilgrimage to Cathirgamam (a place sacred to Soobramania). உத்தரவுகேட்க, inf. To ask leave. உத்தரவுகொடுக்க, inf. To give permission. உத்தரவுசெய்ய, inf. To grant permission, privileges, &c. உத்தரவுசொல்ல, inf. To give leave. உத்தரவுச்சீட்டு, s. A passport, permit, விடுதலைப்பத்திரிகை. 2. A certificate of right, permission, privilege, authority, அதிகாரப்பத்திரிகை. உத்தரி, s. A horse, குதிரை. (p.) உத்தரி, க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To make satisfaction, indemnify, compensate, atone for, expiate, ஈடுசெய்ய. 2. To bear, sustain, experience, to endure what is deserved, சகிக்க. 3. To pay debts, liquidate, to give satisfaction, கடன்செலுத்த. 4. To reply to, answer, state arguments on one's behalf, நியாயங்காட்ட. 5. To guarantee, உத்தரவாதஞ்செய்ய. 6. v. n. To suffer by disease, poverty, age, &c., அழுந்த. வியாதியிலேகிடந்துத்தரிக்க, To lie suffering in disease. சமுசாரப்பொறுப்பையுத்தரிக்க. To sustain the burden of a family. நாலுபேர்சமுகத்திலேயுத்தரித்தாலல்லோதெரியும்.... The merit of the parties will appear by a public discussion. அவனிடத்திலிருந்தென்னாலுத்தரிக்கக்கூடாது. To state arguments, to argue. 2. To reply in argument. உத்தரிப்பு, v. noun. Sufferings, afflictions--as retribution for sins of former births, சகிப்பு.--Note. All the meanings of the verb are equally applicable, but this is the most common. 34) *

uṟumu (p. 68) கிறேன், உறுமினேன், வே ன், உறும, v. n. To growl, grumble, &c., முறுமுறுக்க. 2. To growl--as a bear, tiger, dog or monkey in rut; to gnarl--as a cat, முறுக. 3. To grunt--as a pig, பன்றியுறும. 4. To thunder with a growling noise, மே கமுழங்க. 5. To sound as the உறுமி drum. 6. To show anger, சினக்க. 7. To rise, be stirred up, எழும்ப. முகிலுறுமுகிறது. kri (p. 96) s. Charcoal, நெருப்புக்கரி. 2. Blackness, crock, snuff of a lamp &c., கரு மை. (c.) 3. (p.) Poison, நஞ்சு. 4. The hard part of timber, வைரம். 5. Witness, evidence, testimony, சாட்சி, 6. Example illustration, திருட்டாந்தம். மயிர்ச்சுட்டுக்கரியாகுமா. Can charcoal be made of hair? i. e. what profit can accrue from mean savings, &c. அவளொருகரிநாய். She is a black dog; i.e. she is an ugly creature. கரிகறுக்க, inf. [vul.] To grow black, to become very dark, மிகக்கறுக்க. கரிகறுத்துப்போயிற்று. It is become as black as charcoal. கரிகறுத்தமுகம், s. A face as black as charcoal either naturally, or with rage. கரிக்கட்டி, s. A piece of charcoal. கரிக்கட்டை, s. A quenched firebrand. கரிக்காரன், s. A charcoal dealer. கரிக்காந்தல், s. [prov.] Particles of charred olas, rice husk and such-like thin substances, cinders of light bodies. See கரந்தல். கரிக்கிடங்கு, s. A pit or hole for burning charcoal. கரிக்குடல், s. [prov. vul.] The great gut, the rectum, மலக்குடல். கரிக்குருவி, s. A black bird greatly esteemed for its song, கஞ்சனம். It is said to peck crows and other large birds and to drive them away, Graceola religiosa. 2. A small black bird, ஓர்சிறுகுருவி. கரிக்கொள்ளி, s. A charred brand extinguished, குறைக்கொள்ளி. கரிக்கோடிடுதல், v. noun The appearing of soft hairs on the chin of young men. கரிச்சட்டி--கரிப்பானை, s. Begrimed, smutty pots. கரிச்சாம்பல், s. Black ashes, கறுத் தசாம்பல். கரிச்சுட, inf. To burn charcoal, to char, கரியுண்டாக்க. கரித்தண்ணீர், s. Water in which collied chatties have been washed. கரித்துண்டு--கரித்துணி, s. A dirty begrimed rag or cloth, கரிச்சீலை. கரிநெருப்பு, s. Fire made of charcoal, கரியிலுண்டானநெருப்பு. கரிப்பிடிக்க, inf. To be collied, be begrimed with soot, &c.--as a vessel on the fire, கரிப்பற்ற. கரிப்புரள, inf. To be collied, as clothes, &c. கரிப்புறத்திணை, s. Rules for explaining and proving a doctrine from the written and testimonies of the learned, சாட்சிப்புறத்திணை. கரிப்பூச, inf. To begrime with the smut of charcol. என்முகத்திலேகரிப்பூசிப்போட்டான். He has begrimed my face; i. e. brought a disgrace on me. கரிமருந்து, s. Powder used for fireworks, of which charcoal, is the essential ingredient, வெடிமருந்து. கரிமுண்டம், s. kompu (p. 146) s. The horn of a beast, விலங்கின்கொம்பு. 2. A branch, மரக்கொம்பு. 3. The foot-stalk or stem of a flower, பூங் கொம்பு. (p.) 4. A narrow stick; a staff, pole, கோல். 5. A musical instrument; a cornet, horn, ஊதுகொம்பு. 6. A tusk of an elephant or hog, யானைமுதலியவற்றின்தந்தம். 7. The curllike symbol in certain compound characters--as in நெ, பொ, &c., அக்கரத்தின்கோடு. 8. The bent front pole of a palankeen, சிவி கையின்கொம்பு. 9. (fig.) Eminence, greatness, மேன்மை. 1. (loc.) The outlet of a tank, ஏரிக்கோடி. பறக்குங்குருவிக்கு இருக்குங்கொம்புதெரியாது, பரதே சிக்குத்தங்குமிடந்தெரியாது. The migrating bird knows not the branch on which it may roost; and the pilgrim known not his halting place. பழுத்தபழங்கொம்பிலிராது. The ripe fruit remains not on the branch; i. e., at the appointed time, the event will happen. பிடித்தகொம்புமொடிந்துமிதித்தகொம்புமுறிந்தாற்போ லானேன். I was like a man in whose hands and under whose feet the branches had given way; i. e. I was without support. கொம்புசுற்றிக்காற்றடிக்கிறது. The wind blows and whirls around every branch. ஏதுகொம்புமுளைத்துவிட்டதோ. Have his horns grown? used when a person shows pride,insubordination, &c. கொம்படிக்க, inf. To butt--as oxen, buffaloes, rams, goats, &c. 2. (fig.) To assume authority, to be supercilious. கொம்பனையாள்--கொம்பனாள், s. She whose waist is as tender and narrow as the stem of flower. (p.) கொம்பன், s. A tusked elephant or other beast. 2. A kind of cholera or small-pox. கொம்பன்சுறா, s. The sword fish, (lit.) the horned shark. கொம்பாள், s. [loc.] A man looking out from a tree. Sometimes கொம்பத்தாள். கொம்புத்தேன், s. [prov கொப்பாந் தேன்.] Honey formed by bees on branches. கொம்புப்பயறு, s. A kind of pulse. கொம்புப்பாகல்--கொம்பன்பாகல். A kind of winding பாகல் creeper. கொம்பாடவிடான். He suffers no one else to take the lead; assumes too much. கொம்பேறிமூர்க்கன்-கொம்பேறிமூக்கன், s. [loc.] A long dangerous snake living in trees. அசைக்கொம்பு--ஆடுகொம்பு--தோற் கொம்பு, s. A moveable horn fixed in the skin. கடைக்கொம்பு--உளிக்கொம்பு, s. Stump of a horn. கவர்க்கொம்பு--கவட்டைக்கொம்பு-கிளைக்கொம்பு, s. A branched horn. திருகுகொம்பு--முறுக்குக்கொம்பு, s. Winding or tortuous horn. மட்டைக்கொம்பு--விரிகொம்பு, s. Horns extended on both sides. முகக்கொம்பு--முன்கொம்பு, s. Horns setting down towards the ground. மோழைக்கொம்பு, s. Horns hindered from growing by being burnt. உச்சிக்கொம்பன், s. A beast with perpendicular horns near together. ஏந்துகொம்பன், s. An elephant with curved tusks. 2. An ox with horns rising abruptly and projecting forward at the points. ஒற்றைக்கொம்பன், s. An elephant with one tusk, the other being broken. 2. Ganésa. See ஒற்றை. கணைக்கொம்பன், s. An ox with stunted horns. கிளிக்கொம்பன், s. See under கிளி. கூடுகொம்பன், s. An ox whose horns come near together at the points. கூர்ங்கொம்பன், s. Sharp-horned ox. கூழைக்கொம்பன், s. An ox with stubbed horns. நாரைக்கொம்பன், s. [prov.] An ox with long white horns. பவளக்கொம்பன், s. An elephant whose tusks resemble coral in color. பிடிக்கொம்பன், s. Short-horned beast. மாடைக்கொம்பன், s. A bullock with horns bent backwards. முத்துக்கொம்பன், s. An elephant whose tusks, in color, resemble pearl. விரிகொம்பன், s. An ox with spreading horns. கொம்புக்காரன், s. [prov. கொம்பூதி.] A horn blower. கொம்புக்கால், s. The ெ with ா--as ெ-ா, with க--making கொ. கொம்புகாலி, s. [prov.] A palankeen bearer; a term of reproach. கொம்புப்பிறை, s. civaṉ (p. 188) s. Siva, the third of the Indian Triad, in the character of destroyer, or reducer of things to their primitive atoms. By his votaries he is considered the supreme god. the other deities being subject to him, சங்கரன். சிவகணம், s. The attendant demi-gods of Siva, commonly in companies, சிவன் சேனை. சிவசமயம், s. The Siva religion. சிவசிந்தை, s. Divine contemplation, meditation on Siva--as சிவத்தியானம். சிவஞானசித்தியார்--சிவஞானசித்தி, s. A commentary on சிவஞானபோதம். See சித்தி யார். சிவஞானபோதம், s. A celebrated work consisting of twelve rules translated from the ரௌரவம், or the sixteenth Agama, being almost the only part of the Agamas known in Tamil. It is regarded as divine, without origin, and as not to be read unless the person has attained a competent degree in the religion. Other works--as சித்தியார், சிவப்பி ரகாசம், தத்துவப்பிரகாசம், &c., are commentaries on this or other treatises in support of its doctrines, ஓராகமநூல். சிவஸ்தலம்--சிவஸ்தானம்--சிவதலம், s. Temples, places, &c., sacred to Siva; Saiva temples. சிவதத்துவம், s. Degrees of religious power or attainment derived from Siva, of which five are specified--as 1. சத் தவித்தை. 2. ஈச்சுரம். 3. சாதாக்கியம். 4. சத்தி. 5. சிவம், which see severally. சிவதரிசனம், s. Sight or knowledge of Siva. 2. Pilgrimage to holy places of Siva. 3. A treatise containing a representation of the deity according to the Agamas, ஓர்நூல். சிவதர்மம்--சிவதன்மம், s. Meritorious or virtuous works performed in reference to Siva, as distinguished from actions of benevolence to creatures, பதி தர்மம். 2. One of the eighteen secondary Puranas, ஒருபுராணம். சிவதர்மோத்தரம்--சிவதன்மோத்தரம், s. The Uttera Candum (உத்தரகாண்டம்.) or the last part of the சிவதன்மபுராணம். சிவதீட்சை, s. The initiatory ceremony on entering the Saiva sect. சிவதீர்த்தம், s. A sacred tank within the precincts of the great temple at Ramisseram. சிவதொண்டு, s. Service of Siva. சிவதொண்டர், s. Devotees or votaries of Siva. சிவத்தாபனம்--சிவஸ்தாபனம், s. An edifice sacred to Siva, a large shrine. சிவத்தியானம், s. Contemplation of Siva in silent devotion, an image being formed in the mind as an object of worship. சிவத்துரோகம், s. Sin against Siva; a profanation of sacred things. சிவநிந்தை, s. Blasphemy or contempt of Siva. சிவபஜனை, s. Praising Siva by lyrics. சிவபத்தர்--சிவபத்திக்காரர்--சிவமதஸ்தர், s. Worshippers or devotees of Siva as distinguished from விட்டுணுபத்தர். சிவபத்தி, s. The religion of Siva. 2. The profession of the Siva religion. 3. Adherence, attachment, or devotedness to Siva. சிவபுண்ணியம், s. Deeds of merit, performances in reference to Siva--as சிவதர்மம். சிவபூசை, s. The worship of Siva as practised in the temple or by the கிரியை க்காரன்; the Siva-pujah, consisting of the offering of flowers, milk, boiled rice, fruits, &c., waving incense and light-reciting mantras and praises, prostrating, before the idol, &c., 2. Mental worship of Siva, in which there is an idol ceremony corresponding to what is mentioned above. சிவபூசைவேளையிலே கரடியைவிட்டாட்டுகிறதா. Is it proper to exhibit a dancing bear during the Siva-pujah--i. e. to trifle on a solemn occasion? சிவபுராணம், s. The Siva-Puranas, forming ten out of the eighteen. See புராணம். சிவபுரி, s. The abode of Siva, or city in the Siva-logam, கைலாசபுரி. 2. The city of Benares, as sacred to Siva, காசி முதலியநகரிகள். சிவபோகம், s. Enjoyment of the soul in union with Siva. (தத்.) சிவப்பிரகாசம், s. A work on the Agama philosophy, exhibiting in a condensed view the doctrines inculcated in சித்தியார், and other cognate works. சிவப்பிரதிட்டை--சிவப்பிரதிஷ்டை, s. The consecration of a temple or image of Siva. சிவப்பிராமணர், s. Brahmans, குருக்கள் who adhere to the Siva or Agama doctrines and practices, as distinguished from those who profess the வைதீகம். சிவப்பிரீதி, s. That which is acceptable, agreeable and pleasing to Siva--as fruits, &c. 2. May it be acceptable to Siva, --spoken by the receiver as an acknowledgement of a gift, an act of reverence, &c. சிவமயம், s. A term of invocation; also of benediction--meaning happiness, prosperity, and success, சுபமஸ்து. சிவமுந்திருக்கூட்டமும், s. See under கூட்டம். சிவமூர்த்திபேதங்கள், s. The different forms assumed by the deity, the gods. சிவராத்திரி, s. (Sometimes சிவநிசி.) The night preceding the new moon in February, kept as a watchnight in honor of Siva. சிவவாக்கியம், s. A poem on theism, wholly condemning polytheism, ஓர் நூல். சிவவாக்கியர், s. The name of a celebrated saint, the author of the poem சிவவாக்கியம். சிவலிங்கம், s. The Linga, as the chief image and material object of worship in the Saiva religion. சிவலோகம், s. The world of Siva, being the upper of the seven superior worlds. See சிவபுரி. சிவவேடம், s. The habiliments, or other badges characteristic of the worshippers of Siva--as red vestments, sacred beads, ashes, the linga, &c. சிவனடியார், s. Votaries of Siva. 2. The sixty-three special votaries of Siva mentioned in Periya Purana. சிவாகமம், s. The Agamas as the scriptures of the Siva sect, being twentyeight; of these the சிவஞானபோதம், a part of the ரௌரவம் and the வாதுளம், are translated into Tamil. The twenty-eight Agamas are the following: 1. காமிகம். 2. யோகசம். 3. சிந்தியம். 4. காரணம். 5. அசிதம். 6. தீபதம். 7. சூக்குமம். 8. சகத்திரம். 9. அஞ்சுமான். 1. சுப்பிரபேதகம். 11. விசயம். 12. நிசுவாசம். 13. சுவாயம்புவம். 14. அனலம். 15. வீரம். 16. ரௌ ரவம். 17. மகுடம். 18. விமலம். 19. சந்திர ஞானம். 2. விம்பம். 21. புரோற்கிதம். 22. இல ளிதம். 23. சித்தம். 24. சந்தானசருவோத்தம். 25. பாரமேச்சுரம். 26. கீரணம். 27. பேதம். 28. வாதுளம். சிவாதனம்--சிவாசனம், s. The place for an image of Siva used for daily worship; [ex ஆதனம்.] சிவாயநம, s. The famous five lettered incantation called the மூலமந்திரம்--as being the foundation of spiritual wisdom and all religion, and the means prescribed and proper for obtaining liberation, from births and union with the supreme. சிவார்ச்சனை, s. The worship of Siva with flowers, incantation, &c.; [ex அர்ச் சனை, worship.] See சிவபூசை. சிவார்ப்பணம்--சிவாற்பணம், s. An oblation to Siva. See அற்பணம். சிவாஸ்திரம், s. A missile weapon or dart said to be given by Siva; [ex அஸ்தி ரம்.] சிவாலயம், s. Saiva temple. சிவானுபவம், s. The bliss of union with Siva; [ex அனுபவம்.] 5)
