[in prosody.] Repetition of a word or words with different meanings in the beginning of a line, or the repetition of a line in a verse with different meanings, சித்திரக்கவியி லொன்று, as, ஆகங்கண்டகராலற்றவாடவர், ஆகங் கண்டகராலற்றவன்பினர். அடிமடி, s. A secret place in the waistcloth, உள்மடி. அடிமடை, s. The commencement of a water channel, முதல்மடை. அடிமண், s. The earth adhering to one's feet, taken for enchantments against him (வசியம்) or for witchcraft, காலிலொட்டியமண். அடிமயக்கு, s. Transposing the lines of a verse without destroying the sense, அடிமாற்றுகை. 2. A verse so formed, ஓர்பா, as, அங்கண்மதியமரவின்வாய்ப்பட்டென்ப, பூசல்வாயாப்புலம்புமனைகலங்கி. அடிமறிமண்டிலவாசிரியப்பா, s. One of the four kinds of ஆசிரியம், the lines of which are interchangeable at pleasure, the meaning remaining the same, ஓர்வகையாசிரியப்பா. அடிமறிமாற்றுப்பொருள்கோள், s. Construction in which the lines of a stanza are interchangeable, the harmony and meaning remaining the same, or the harmony only slightly affected. See பொருள்கோள், as, சுரையாழவம்மிமிதப்பவரையனை ய, யானைக்குநீத்துமுயற்குநிலையென்ப கானகநாடன் சுனை. அடிமுகனை, s. [vul.] Beginning-as of a story, &c. அடிமுடி, s. Order, regularity, வர லாறு. 2. One of the forty-three kinds of rhyme in which the first word of a line has a meaning opposite to that of the next, செய்யுட்டொடை யிலொன்று, as, இருள்பரந்தன்னமாநீர்மருங்கின், நிலவுகுவித்தன்னவெண்மணலொருசிறை, where darkness and moonlight are opposite. அடிமோனைத்தொடை, s. One of the forty-three kinds of rhyme in which each line begins with the same letter, ஓர் வகை மோனைத்தொடை. அடியடியாக, adv. [prov.] In succession, as the descent of title, &c., தலைமுறை தலைமுறையாக. அடியந்தாதி, s. A repetition in verse. See அந்தாதி. அடியளபெடை, s. Prolonging the sounds of long vowels at the beginning of every line, தொடைவிகற்பத்தொன்று. அடியறுக்கி, s. A flat piece of wood by which the potter marks his work and cuts it from the wheel below, மட்கலமறுக்குங்கருவி. அடியனாதி, s. Time immemorial, antiquity, தொன்றுதொட்டுள்ளகாலம். அடியார், s. [sing. அடியான்--அடி யாள்.] Slaves, servants as applied to devotees in reference to their deity, and used by persons of themselves in addressing superiors, to show respect, obedience or submission, தொண்டர். அடியிட, inf. To set on foot, commence an undertaking, a law suit, &c., தொடங்க. 2. To make a beginning in braiding--as the bottom of a basket, the first end of a mat, &c., பாய்முதலியவை முடைதற்கு அடியிட. அடியுரம், s. [prov.] Ancestral property, original stock. 2. Crop of a past year reserved for the sustenance of the following. 3. Manure put on the soil round a tree, &c., எரு. 4. Strength from food, power of wealth, &c.; ex உரம், strength. அடியெடுத்துவைக்க, inf. To begin to walk as children. அடியெதுகைத்தொடை, s. One of the forty-three kinds of rhymes in which the second letters of each line are of the same class, ஓரெதுகைத்தொடை. அடியேன், s. I your slave, your humble servant. அடியோடுகெட, inf. To be destroyed utterly, extirpated. அடியோட்டி, s. A triangular instrument with spikes, which, however placed, has one spike upward to pierce the feet of men or cattle; used in war, &c., a caltrop. அடிவயிறு, s. The lower part of the belly, the abdomen, கீழ்வயிறு. அடிவரலாறு, s. Source, principle, cause, காரணம். 2. Beginning, origin, bottom of a thing, தொடக்கம். 3. Ancient lines of ancestry, வமிசவரலாறு. அடிவரலாறாகத்தெரிதல். Understanding from the first. அடிவருட, inf. To chafe, stroke, or shampoo the legs of another. அடிவாரம், s. The foot of a hill, சாரல். அடிவானம், s. Horizon, திகாந்தம். அடிவிட--அடிவிரிய--அடிவிள்ள, inf. [prov.] To be cracked as the bottom of a chatty, &c. by use, அடியுடைய. அடிவைக்க, inf. To step, set a step, காலடிவைக்க. 2. To begin to walk as a child, நடக்கத்தொடங்க. 3. To intrude one's self into an affair, தலையிட. 4. To begin a work, ஆரம்பிக்க. மலையடிப்பட்டி, s. A village at the foot of a hill. சிற்றடி, s. A small or delicate foot.

aintu (p. 80) adj. or noun. Five, ஓரெண். ஐங்கணை, s. Five flowers feigned to be the arrows of Hindu cupid. (p.) ஐங்கணைக்கிழவன், Kama, the Hindu cupid, lit. lord of the five arrows, மன்மதன். (p.) ஐங்கரன், s. Ganesa, the five-handed. He is represented with an elephant's head, the proboscis or trunk is figuratively reckoned as a hand, விநாய கன். (p.) ஐங்கரற்கிளையோன், s. A name of Skanda, முருகன். 2. Verapattra, வீரபத் திரன். (p.) ஐங்கலம், s. Sixty marcals. ஐங்காதம், s. Five leagues. ஐங்காயம், s. The five kinds of காயம். (See காயம்.) 2. Other five kinds are used in witchcraft, viz.: 1. மிளகு, pepper. 2. வெந்தயம், dill. 3. ஓமம், cardamom. 4. வெள்ளுள்ளி, garlic. 5. பெருங் காயம், assaf&oe;tida. ஐங்காயத்தூள்--ஐங்காயவுண்டை, s. Powders of five ingredients given to women after child-birth, ஓர்மருந்து. ஐங்குரவர், s. The five confidential servants of a king, அரசர்க்குக்குழு, viz.: 1. மந்தியர், ministers. 2. புரோகிதர், priests. 3. சேனாபதியர், generals. 4. தூதர், ambassadors. 5. சாரணர், spies. ஐங்கோணம், s. A pentagon, quinquangular figure, பஞ்சகோணம். ஐஞ்ஞூறு, s. Five-hundred, ஐந் நூறு. ஐந்தரு, s. The five trees in the world of Indra, பஞ்சதாரு, viz.: 1. அரிச்சந்த னம். 2. கற்பகம். 3. சந்தானம். 4. பாரிசாதம். 5. மந்தாரம். ஐந்தருநாதன், s. Indra, lord of the five trees in the celestial world, which yield whatever is asked or desired of them, இந்திரன். (p.) ஐந்தலைநாகம், s. A fabulous fiveheaded cobra, of which each head is supposed to contain a very precious gem. It is said to be found in mountainous districts and to have the power of flying. ஐந்தவித்தல், s. The control of the senses, ஐம்பொறியடக்கல். ஐந்தவித்தானாற் றலகல்விசும்புளார்கோமானிந்திர னேசாலுங்கரி. Indra, the god of the celestials, is a living monument of the wonderful power of those who control the five senses. (குறள்.) ஐந்தனுருபு, s. The fifth case (இன்) --one of the ablatives denoting procession, similitude, limit, and means, ஐந்தாம் வேற்றுமையுருபு. மலையின்வீழருவி. Torrents rushing from the mountains. காக்கையிற்கரிதுகளம்பழம். The களா berry is as black as a crow. மதுரையின்வடக்குச்சிதம்பரம். Sethamparam is situated to the north of Madura. கல்வியிற்பெரியன்கம்பன். Kampan made himself great by learning. ஐந்தாங்கால், s. The first post of the marriage shed when planted on the fifth day before the marriage, the third, fifth, or seventh day being chosen, as it may be lucky or otherwise, according to astrological calculation, மணப்பந்தரின் ஐந்தாங்கால். ஐந்தானம், s. The fifth lunar asterism, மிருகசீரிடம். (p.) ஐந்திணை, s. The five kinds of land, &c., ஐவகைநிலம். (See திணை.) 2. The closest friendship or love between husbands and wives, அன்புடைக்காமம். (p.) ஐந்திணைச்செய்யுள், s. A poem in which the five different kinds of soil are described and illustrated--one of the ninety-six பிரபந்தம், ஓர்பிரபந்தம். (p.) ஐந்துருவாணி, s. A shaft connecting the floors or stages of a car. See அ ஞ்சுருவாணி. ஐந்துறுப்படக்கி, s. The tortoise, ஆமை. (p.) ஐந்தொகைவினா, s. [in arithmetic.] The rule of five or double rule of three, ஓர்வகையெண்வினா. ஐந்தொழில், s. The five divine operations, பஞ்சகிருத்தியம், viz.: 1. சிருஷ்டி, creation or reproduction. 2. ஸ்திதி, preservation. 3. சங்காரம், destruction, reduction of things to their primitive elements. 4. திரோபவம், that act of the deity by which he conceals from the sentient soul its future destiny for purposes of moral discipline; concealing, obscuring; i. e. involving the soul in ignorance or illusion by means of magic. 5. அனுக்கிரகம், grace, the various means adopted for the deliverance of the soul from the power of illusion and consequent transmigrations. kṭi (p. 87) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To bite, bite off, crop, gnaw, nibble, grasp with, or hold in the mouth, to champ, பல்லாற்கறிக்க. 2. To hurt, pinch, gall --as new shoes, a new ring, &c., செருப்புமு தலியகாலையழுத்த. காதையிந்தக்கடுக்கன்மிகக்கடிக்கிறது. This earring pinches my ear very much. காலைச்செருப்புக்கடித்துப்போட்டது. The sandal has galled my foot. கையைக்கடியாமலிருக்கப்பார்க்கிறார். He takes care that the expense shall not fall on himself. சற்றுப்பல்லைக்கடித்துக்கொண்டிரு. Be patient, hold still a little, lit. bite your teeth and be still. ஒருமனிதனைக்கடித்துப்பிடுங்கலாமோ. Should one fall foul on a person and compel him? முயிறுகடித்துப்பிடித்துக்கொண்டது. The red ant is biting me, has laid fast hold of me. கடிநாய், s. A vicious, snappish dog, கடிக்கிறநாய். 2. (fig.) A surly person, a cynic, துஷ்டன். கடிப்பான், s. Condiment, a sauce, கறி. கடிவாளம், s. A bridle, கலினம். கடிவாளம்போடுதல்--கடிவாளம்மா ட்டுதல், v. noun. Bridling a horse. கடிவாளம்வாங்க--கடிவாளங்கழற்ற, inf. To unbridle. கடிவாளம்வெட்டுதல், v. noun. kṭṭu (p. 88) கிறேன், கட்டினேன், வேன், கட்ட, v. a. To tie, bind, gird, confine, link, chain, hamper, trammel, shackle, pinion, fasten, brace, pack, put on clothes, to wear, பிணிக்க. 2. To build, construct, frame, erect, fix, arrange, வீடுமுதலியகட்ட. 3. To hug, embrace, தழுவ. 4. To marry, விவாகஞ் செய்ய. 5. To bind by spells, magic, &c., to conjure, தடைகட்ட. 6. To fabricate, contrive, invent, கதைகட்ட. 7. To harden, condense, consolidate mercury, vermilion, &c., by the admixture of certain ingredients, சரக்குக்கட்ட. 8. To subordinate, subdue, subject, அடக்க. 9. To suborn, to bribe, பரிதானத்தாற்கட்ட. 1. v. n. [with the impersonal terminations.] To harden, consolidate, form as concretions, to concrete, clot, congeal, இறுக. 11. The blood is clotted in the part which is bruised. இப்படியிட்டேற்றம்பேசினாலுனக்குத்தொண்டையி லேகட்டும். If you persist in thus traducing me, you will have a boil in your throat; i. e. you will be seriously distressed--a curse. கட்டாக்காலி, s. An ox or cow suffered to run wild, or not folded by night. கட்டாணி, s. a fastening for a female ear-ring, கடைப்பூட்டாணி. கட்டிக்காக்க, inf. To preserve, guard, to protect. கட்டிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To give a daughter in marriage. 2. To make, build, construct, &c., and give one. கட்டிக்கொள்ள, inf. To take in marriage. 2. To hug, to embrace. 3. To contract, to lay up, to accumulate as moral deeds, virtue or vice, for future retribution. 4. To secure as an object, to turn a thing or person to one's own account, to conciliate favor, to bring within one's own power or influence. 5. To suborn, to bribe. 6. To make up a difference, a quarrel, &c., to become reconciled, to settle amicably, to compromise. தேசத்தைக்கட்டிக்கொள்ள. To conquer a country. புண்ணியத்தைக்கட்டிக்கொள்ள. To do a good action. பாவத்தைக்கட்டிக்கொள்ள. To contract guilt, to commit a sin. மாங்காய்ப்புளிதொண்டையைக்கட்டிக்கொண்ட து. The acid of the mango has caused a constriction in my throat. என்னபலனைக்கட்டிக்கொண்டாய். What hast thou obtained? கட்டிப்பிடிக்க, inf. To throw the arms round a person, to hug, to embrace, to grasp, to seize. கட்டிப்புகுந்தவள், s. A widow that has married again. கட்டியடிக்க, inf. To tie and flog, whip, &c., கட்டுகரை, s. A mole, a pier to defend shipping in a harbor. கட்டுசரக்கு, s. Mercury, &c., consolidated. கட்டுத்தாலிகட்ட, inf. To marry a widow. 2. To take a woman to wife-this may be done, if the man has no child by his first wife, with her consent, who acknowledges its validity by tying the marriage symbol round the neck of the new bride. தன்னைக்கட்ட, inf. A kind of odoriferous plant, ஓர்வாசனைச்செடி, thick leaved lavander, Lavandula, carnosa, L. கர்ப்பூரவில்வம், s. A species of வில்வம், very fragrant, ஓர்வில்வம். கர்ப்பூரவெற்றிலை, s. Odoriferous betel, வாசனைவெற்றிலை. பச்சைக்கர்ப்பூரம், s. Crude camphor. கிண்ணிக்கர்ப்பூரம், s. [as இரசகர்ப் பூரம்.] A kind of arsenic; it is so called from its having the form of a cup after preparation, sublimate of mercury. ஆரதிகர்ப்பூரம்--தீபகர்ப்பூரம், s. Wanderer, திரி வோன். 3. Title given to the chief of the Paller caste, பள்ளர்தலைவன். காலாட்டம், s. Activity in business, in duty, and consequent properity, மு யற்சி. காலாட்டமுள்ளமாடு, s. An ox that is brisk and ploughs well. காலாணி, s. A corn on the foot. 2. Pegs in the beams of native houses to support the roof. காலாணியற்றுப்போனவன், s. One who is become weak or poor. காலாயுதம், s. A gallinacious fowl, whose foot is its weapon, கோழி. காலாழி, s. See under ஆழி. காலாள், s. A person on foot; footsoldiers, infantry, பதாதி. காலாற, inf. To set on foot firm on the ground; to become established. காலூன்றிநிற்க, inf. To stand firmly, stand fast. காலூன்றிப்பெய்ய, inf. To rain in torrents--the clouds seeming to rest on the horizon. காலேயரைக்கால், s. A quarter and oneeighth, five-eighths. காலோடேகால்சேர்ந்துநிற்க, inf. To stand with closed legs. கால்கட்டு, s. Inseparableness--as of wife and husband. கால்கட்டுகைகட்டு, Bound hand and foot. 2. (fig.) Confined at home by the sickness of another, by a grown-up daughter, a motherless child, or by urgent business, &c. கால்கழுவ, inf. To wash the feet; metaphorically to clean one's self with water after stool, மலங்கழுவ. கால்கூசுதல், v. noun. Shrinking of the foot in touching rough ground, &c. 2. Recoiling of the legs in stepping into the compound or house of a stranger. 3. Having spasms in the arms, and legs --as in cholera. கால்சீக்க, inf. To root out, exterminate, வேரோடுகளைய. 2. To efface, to obliterate, துடைக்க. 3. To dispel darkness, இருளைஅகற்ற. 4. To scrape with the foot, காலினாற்சீக்க. கால்செய்வட்டம், s. A fan, விசிறி; [ex கால், air, et செய்வட்டம்.] கால்தளர--காறளர inf. To become weak in the limps, by walking, sickness, age, &c. கால்தோல்--காற்றோல் s. [prov.] Leathern defences for toddy-drawers feet in climbing, மரமேறுவோர் காலிலிடுந்தோல். கால்நகம்--கானகம் s. Toe-nail. கால்நடை--கானடை. v. noun. Walking, going on foot--as distinct from riding and driving. 2. s. Sheep and goats; oxen, cattle, ஆடுமாடுகள் அவனுக்குமாட்டில் நூறுகால்நடையுண்டு. He has no-hundred oxen. கால்நடையாய், adv. On foot, a-foot. கால்நடையாய்ப் பிரயாணம்போக, inf. To travel on foot. கால்நோக்கு--கானோக்கு s. One-fourth aspect of a planet, being one of the four aspects. கால்பாவவில்லை. The feet do not seek the ground--recoiling from going. கால்பிடிக்க, inf. To fall at one's feet to ask a favor. 2. To press and rub the legs in order to induce sleep, to shampoo. கால்பின்னிக்கொண்டுநிற்க, inf. To stand cross-legged. கால்பின்னிக்கொள்ள--காலோடேகால் பின்னிக்கொள்ள, inf. To lose the power of walking, legs being crossed. கால்மட்டம், s. [prov.] Use of the feet in walking, by guess or practice--as in the dark or as a blind man. கால்மாடு, s. A lame man. கடைகால், s. The foundation, அஸ்திவா ரம். 2. An excavation for laying the foundation. 3. [prov.] A small iron bucket for drawing water. கிந்துகால், s. A halting or hobbling leg. கிந்துகாலன், s. A hobbler. கீற்றரைக்கால், The contracted form of உ, marked thus ,-- as து, நு. கீற்றுக்கால், The contracted form of ஊ, marked thus --as தூ, நூ. See under கீற்று. குதிகால்--குதிங்கால் s. Heel. குந்துகாலன், (fem. குந்துகாலி.) A hobbler, a limping person. 2. A Squatter, a man sitting on the his knees. குந்துகால், s. Tip-toe. 2. Squat, sitting on the heels--as a man. கொம்புக்கால், s. The two signs for ஒ marked thus ெ-ா, as in கொ,சொ,. தோரணக்கால், s. Poles to which strings or ropes adorned with twigs or leaves are tied, to represent triumphal arches. நாற்காலி, s. Chair. பகுதிக்கால், s. The sign of உ, in certain compound characters marked thus --as சு, பு. பகுதிக்காற்பிறை, s. The sign of ஊ, marked --as பூ, யூ. பவளக்காலி, s. The name of a bird, Erythropus longipes, corallinus. பின்னங்கால், s. Hind leg. புள்ளிக்கால், s. The character ள subjoined to the letter உ, to lengthen it. புறங்கால், s. The upper part of the foot, instep. பொய்க்கால், s. A stilt, a false leg-as a wooden one. பொய்க்கால் கட்டியாட, inf. To go upon stilts. மடிப்பங்கால், s. Legs with folded knees. மடிப்பங்கால்போட. inf. To sit upon the hams with folded knees. மரக்கால், s. Crutches. 2. A wooden leg. 3. [ex கால், a measure.] An instrument of dry-measure. முக்காலி, s. Tripod. முக்கால், s. Three quarters, ??, தெ. முக்காலும். The three times, even three times. முக்காலும்போவேன். I will certainly go, come, &c. முக்காலேமூன்றுவீசமும். Almost, for the greatest part, nearly. முன்னங்கால், s. The poetic தளை are of seven kinds embracing four classes. I. ஆசிரி யத்தளை. connexion of ஆசிரியம் verse of two species. 1. நேரொன்றாசிரீயத்தளை, combination of simple syllables in the ஆசிரியம் connexion, or of one simple ஆசிரியம் foot, with another. 2. நிரையொன்றாசிரியத்தளை, combination of compound syllables, or the connexion of one compound ஆசிரியம் foot, with another. II. வெண்டளை, connexion of வெண் பா verse, also of two species. 1. வெண்சீர் வெண்டளை, combination of genuine வெண்சீர் foot, or of one வெண்சீர் foot with another foot, biginning with a simple syllable 2. இயற்சீர்வெண்டளை, combination of simple, or ஆசிரியம் feet, or connexion of an ஆசிரியம் foot ending with a compound syllable with another foot beginning with a simple syllable, or vice versa. III. கலித்தளை, connexion of the கலிப்பா verse, being single, viz.; that of வெண்சீர் foot ending with a syllable with another foot beginning with a compound syllable. IV. வஞ்சித்தளை, connexion of வஞ்சி verse of two species. 1. ஒன்றியவஞ்சித்தளை, combination of compound syllables, or of one வஞ்சி foot with another foot beginning with a compound syllable. 2. ஒன்றாதவஞ்சித்தளை, combination of a compound with a simple syllable, or of one வஞ்சி foot with another beginning with a simple syllable.
