akpporuḷ (p. 2) s. [ex. அகம், mind, et பொருள்.] Rules for amatory poems, அ கப்பொருள்விதி. 2. Rules for reasoning, தர்க் கவிதி. 3. mental enjoyments in love, இன் பம். 4. A book treating of mental delectation, ஓரிலக்கணம். அகப்பொருள் is developed in these three constituents, viz., 1. முதற்பொருள், primary arrangements of nature with regard to (a) நிலம், soil, in five varieties, and (b) பொழுது, time in two grand divisions. 2. கருப்பொருள், natural peculiarities incidental to each of the divisions of the soil under 14 heads viz., (a) ஆரணங்கு, peculiar gods belonging to a place, tutelary deities or penates, (b) உயர்ந் தோர், chiefs or lords of the district, (c) இழிந்தோர், subjects or inhabitants under them, (d) புள், birds, (e) விலங்கு, beasts, (f) ஊர், city or town, (g) நீர், water, (h) பூ, flowers, (i) மரம். trees, (j) உணா, food, (k) பறை, drum, (l) யாழ், musical instruments, (m) பண், tune, and (n) தொழில், occupation, trade or mode of earning a livelihood. 3. உரிப்பொருள், essential characteristics of lovers. The subject matter of this treatise, to which the two former are auxiliary or conducive, is developed in five dispositions or actions, either mental or coporal, viz., (a) புணர்தல், union or the state in which husbands and wives are together in their family, (b) பிரிதல், separation when for lawful purposes, (c) இருத்தல், the state in which they continue solitary, especially the bride, (d) ஊடல், love quarrels, (e) இ ரங்கல், weeping and lamentation in any period of their life for any cause. These five characteristics are respectively ascribed to the above five species of soil, as appropriately adapted to their nature, as புணர்தல் to குறிஞ்சி, பிரிதல் to பாலை, இருத்தல் to முல்லை, ஊடல் to மருதம், and இரங்கல் to நெய்தல். இந் த ஐந்து ஒழுக்கத்தையுங்குறித்துப் பாடும்பொழுது அத தற்குக்குறித்த திணையிலுள்ள கருப்பொருள்களையெடுத் துப் பாடுதன்முறையாம். akkaram (p. 3) --அட்சரம், s. A letter of the alphabet, a character, the marks on an amulet, எழுத்து. Wils. p. 4. AKSHARA. (p.) *அக்கரசுதகம்--அடசரசுதகம், s. A kind of play in writing, arranging letters in a fanciful manner, மிறைக்கவியி லொன்று. அக்கரவிலக்கணம்--அட்சரலட்ச ணம், s. The properties, forms, names, powers, &c. of letters, orthography. 2. One of the sixty-four கலைஞானம், ex இலக் கணம். அக்கராரம்பம்--அட்சராரம்பம், s. Beginning to teach a child the letters of the alphabet, with appropriate ceremonies, on the fifth year. 46) *

aṭu (p. 8) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. [used with the accusative.] To approach, approximate, come in contact with, கிட்ட. 2. To be near, close, adjacent, proximate, to propinquate, சேர. 3. To adhere, unite with, apply for protection, சார. 4. v. n. (with dative.) To belong, pertain, relate to, be fit for, suitable to, deserving of, conformable to, becoming, உரித்தாக. 5. To happen, occur, சம்பவிக்க. எனக்கடுத்தவர்கள், The people associated with or belonging to me, out own people, kindred. அவள் இவனுக்கடுத்தபெண். She is a suitable woman for him. ஒரு சொல்லிரண்டுமூன்று நான்கெல்லை முறைய டுக்கும். The same word will be repeated twice, thrice, or four times. (Nun.) அடாதது, appel. n. That which is improper, unfit. அவனுன் வீட்டிலே வால் அடாது. It is bad for you to have him come to your house. அடாநிந்தை, s. Injustice, unfounded reproach. அடுகிடை--அடுகிடைபடுகிடை, v. noun. [prov.] Lying down at a person's house determined not to leave till the thing asked is obtained, எழும்பாக்கிடை. அடுக்க, inf. [used adv.] Near, near at hand. அடுத்தடுத்துச்சொல்ல, inf. To reiterate. அடுத்ததண்டனை, s. Deserved punishment. அடுத்ததின்றன்மையான்மாவாகும். The associations of the soul determine its character. (In வீராகமம்.) அடுத்தவீடு, s. The next house. அடுத்தார், s. Adherents, relations, சேர்ந்தார். அடுத்தாற்போலே. Very high, next to, near. அடுத்திருந்து கழுத்தறுக்க, inf. To kill one by treachery. அடுத்துவர, inf. To follow closely, come immediately after, in time or place, நெருங்கிவர. 9)

aṭuppu (p. 8) v. noun. Adhering, joining, சேர்கை; [ex அடு, approach.] 2. s. Hearth, fire place for cooking, as சுல்லி; [ex அடுக்கு, the fire place being made of three stones or pieces of dried clay to support the pots.] 3. The star B'harani, the second lunar asterism of the Hindus, பரணி. 4. Fear, அச்சம். அடுப்பங்கரை, s. The front of the hearth; ex அம், et கரை, margin. சூட்டடுப்பு, s. A moveable heating apparatus, chafing dish, &c. கிளையடுப்பு--கொடியடுப்பு, s. A side hearth. 17)

atikkirāntapintu (p. 10) s. [in the Agama philosophy.] The principle or type of the male semen, as one of the nine different forms or constituent portions of the Deity, or one of the higher characters, in which no form is developed. See நவபேதம், பிந்து and விந்து. 60)

atai (p. 12) க்கிறது, த்தது, க்கும், க்க, v. n. To rebound as a ball, spring or start back, unbend with force, recover straightness as a bent bow, தாக்கிமீள. 2. To swell, puff up, வீங்க. (c.) இவனுக்கதைத்துப்போயிற்று, He has grown arrogant of late, he is become too proud; when said of a woman, it denotes immoral character. அதைத்தமுகம், s. A swelled face. அதைத்தவில்லு, s. An unbent bow. அதைப்பு, v. noun. Rebounding தாக்கிமீளுகை. 2. Swelling, prominence, protuberance, வீக்கம். 11) *

aṉāti (p. 33) s. [priv. அந், et ஆதி, beginning.] That which has no beginning, ஆதியின்மை. Wils. p. 28. ANADY. 2. (p.) [in grammar.] Priority to the immediate cause--as cotton to cloth made from it, the latter being preceded by the former; or a Sanscrit word to the same in Tamil characters, where the Tamil letters are ஆதிகாரணம், and the Sanscrit அனாதிகாரணம். 3. கடவுள். 4. Siva, சிவன். 5. Vishnu, விட் டுணு. அனாதிகாரணம், s. First cause or the cause of secondary causes--as cotton of cloth, thread, &c. (p.) அனாதிநாதர், s. One of the nine சித்தர். (p.) அனாதிமுத்தன், s. One eternally free from births and their attendant entanglements; i. e. the Supreme Being, கடவுள். (p.) 93) *

amai (p. 20) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. n. To yield, come to a right state, submit, comply, obey, acquiesce, சம்மதிக்க. 2. To become settled, peaceable, quiet; to subside, படிய. 3. To be at one's disposal, as a thing that may be effected, acquired, brought to good order, &c., வசமாக. 4. To fit, suit, join nicely, be adapted to, இசைய. 5. To be destined, be subject to a divine appointment or destiny, good or bad, விதிக்குட்பட. 6. To be made, formed, adjusted, திருந்த. 7. To be satisfied, contented, composed, comfortable, resigned, திருத்தியாக. 8. (in the third person only) To be enough, sufficient, போ துமாக. 9. To happen, occur, come to pass, சம்பவிக்க. 1. To belong to, be connected or combined with, be appropriate to, பொ ருந்த. 11. To be obtained, அமர. (p.)--Note. Most of the meanings of this word have reference to the mind. சாஸ்திரத்திற்கமைந்துநடக்கிறவன், He is one who obeyed the shasters. ஐம்புலனமைந்தவன், s. One who has suppressed the five senses, or to whom the senses are subject. இது என்விசாரணைக்கமைந்த காரியம். It is a matter at my disposal. என்விருப்பத்திற்கமைந்தபடிநடந்தது. It has occurred to my satisfaction. சுகதுக்கம் ஊழின்படி அமையும். Good and evil are appointed according to former character. செயுநீர்மைசெய்யாதமைகலாவாறு. Owing to dissatisfaction at inability to do charity. (குறள். 22. அதி.) அமையவுண்மின். Eat enough. இரட்சிப்பு இறைவனுக்கமைந்தது. Salvation is of God. அமையாமை, neg. v. noun. Unsubmission, insubordination, disquietness, unfitness, கீழ்ப்படியாமை. அமைவு, v. noun. Subjection, subordination, acquiescence, பொருந்துகை. 2. Composure of mind, tranquillity, contentment, மனவமைதி. 3. Repression of the senses, subjection of the mental powers, அடக்கம். அமைவடக்கம், s. Concealment, security, silence. அமைவன், s. The god of the Jainas, அருகன். 2. An ascetic, துறந்தோன். 3. A ஞானி. 4. (in general.) One who controls the passions, அடக்கமுடையோன். 5. A learned man, அறிவுடையோன். (p.) 35)

al (p. 27) க்கிறேன், ந்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. n. To be distressed with anxious desire, troubled, harassed, be wretched, be in distress, வருத்தப்பட. அலந்தார், s. The distressed, those who are in want. 20)

alangkāram (p. 27) s. Ornament, decoration, embellishment, சிறப்பு. 2. Beauty, அழகு. 3. Rhetorical ornament, figures of language, rhetoric, அணியிலக்கணம். 4. One of the sixty-four கலைஞானம், கலைஞானமறுபத் துநான்கினொன்று. Wils. p. 73. ALANKARA. There are thirty-five figures of language; viz.: 1. தன்மை, a word or phrase expressing the nature of a thing. 2. உவமை, a parable. 3. உருவகம், metaphor. 4. தீவகம், a word once used and understood in the other parts of the sentence. 5. பின் வருநிலை, the repetition of the word beginning a sentence with the same or a different signification. 6. முன்னர்விலக்கு, rejecting a truth asserted, by showing its absurdity. 7. வேற்றுமைப்பொருள்வைப்பு, establishing the truth of a particular fact by a general truth. 8. வேற்றுமை, contrast. 9. விபாவனை separating effects from their proper causes and attributing them to other causes alluded to. 1. ஒட்டு, an allegory. 11. அதிசயம், hyperbole or exaggerated description. 12. தற்குறிப்பேற்றம், a principal kind of metaphor. 13. ஏது, a figure showing the cause, &c. 14. நுட்பம், a figure which presents a suitable idea, by a corresponding hint, &c. 15. இலேசம், a figure in which a trifling excuse is given, as a cloak for a thing of greater magnitude. 16. நிரனிறை, one of the eight kinds of construction of a sentence, i. e. the separate successive arrangements of a series of nouns and their verbs in natural or reverse order. 17. ஆர்வமொழி, an affectionate word or phrase. 18. சுவை, the passions or emotions of the mind expressed by gesture, exhibited in action and transferred to poetry. 19. தன்மேம்பாட் டுரை, self-adulation. 2. பரியாயம், a figure in rhetoric by which one thing is told and another connected with it is intended. 21. சமாயுதம், the accomplishing of one's object by indirect means. 22. உதாத்தம், a figure which expresses copiousness, richness, enterprise, &c. 23. அவநுதி, denying the character, quality or essence of a person or thing in order to attribute the same to others. 24. சிலேடை, a word of double interpretation. 25. விசேடம், distinguishing a cause by ascribing to it effects which it is inadequate to produce. 26. ஒப்புமைக்கூட்டம். enumeration of analogous words, &c. 27. விரோதம், opposition. 28. மாறுபடுபுகழ்நிலை, praising a person or thing to the disparagement of another. 29. புகழாப்புகழ்ச்சி, praise, flattery, &c., couched in terms of dispraise. 3. நிதரிசனம், feigning a thing in nature as doing good or evil to another, a species of personification as a mode of moral instruction. 31. புணர்நிலை, a figure in which the same epithets or attributes are adapted to two or more different subjects. 32. பரிவ ருத்தனை, a figure in rhetoric, describing an exchange of beauties, excellencies. 33. வாழ்த்து, congratulation. 34. சங்கீரணம், the blending of several figures. 35. பாவிகம், moral instruction, inference, applications, &c., from events related in epic poems. அலங்காரநைவேத்தியம், s. An offering made in front of a temple, for show. அலங்காரபஞ்சகம், s. A poem of a hundred verses, (lit.) the five forms of beauty. It is a series of five kinds of verses; viz.: வெண்பா, கலித்துறை, அக வல், ஆசிரியவிருத்தம், சந்தவிருத்தம். (இவ்வகை யே மாறிமாறி நூறுசெய்யுள் அந்தாதித்துப்பாடுவது.) அலங்காரப்படுத்த, inf. almpu (p. 28) கிறேன், அலம்பினேன், வே ன், அலம்ப, v. a. To wash, rinse, கழுவ. (c.) 2. v. n. (p.) To sound, tinkle as little bells, murmur as a brook, as the sea when calm, ஒலிக்க. 3. (c.) To move, wabble as water when carried in a full vessel ready to overflow, ததும்ப. 4. To fluctuate, or be uncertain in condition, as a person whose situation is become doubtful, அலைய. 5. To be discouraged, dispirited, harassed, wearied, fatigued, tired with a person or thing, to prove tedious, அலைக் கழிவுபட. அய்யா மிகவும் அலுத்தோம் அலுத்தோமே. My lord, we are greatly fatigued. (ஸ்காந்.) அலுப்பு, v. noun. Weariness, discouragement, தொய்வு. 30)
