iṟuku (p. 57) கிறது, இறுகினது, ம், இறுக, v. n. To become tight--as a bandage, knot, &c., to be strained, be close, hard, compact, &c.--as land dried by the sun, அழுந்த. 2. To grow thick in consistency, to coagulate, to be inspissated, be clotted, உறைய. 3. To congeal, become hard--as wax, metals, &c., to become dry--as mortar, clay, &c., கட்டியாக. 4. To become firm--as a loose tooth, பெலக்க. 5. To be close, rich, luxuriant--as growing corn, fruitful trees, &c., செறிய. எண்மண்டையிறுகிப்போயிற்று. இளகு
iḷku (p. 55) கிறது, இளகினது, ம், இளக, v. n. [prov.] To relax, abate, become pliable, flexible, to lessen in intensity or severity--as wind, rain, sun-shine, fever, &c., தணிய. 2. To become tender, indulgent, mild, yielding, placable, to relax in ardor, application, &c., நெகிழ. 3. To grow moist --as goods, &c. in rainy weather, to soften--as heated iron or other metals, to dissolve a little, be reduced in hardness, &c., to deliquesce, soak through--as tiles, கரைய. 4. To become relaxed--as a bowstring, to become loose--as screws, &c., தளர. இளகாதவன், s. A hard-hearted, inexorable person. இளகிக்காண, inf. To become limber, soft, loose, pliant, lubricous, &c., நெகிழ. 2. To appear less strict, rigid, &c.--as the mind; to become less tense. இளகினபொன், s. A stile or other contrivance in a lane or hedge which a man may pass over or through, but not cattle, இடுக்குமரமுதலியன. கடப்புக்கால், s. [prov.] Bandy legs, வளைந்தகால். கடவான், s. [prov.] A channel cut in the ridge of a rice-field to let the surplus water pass away, or for watering the next field, நீர்மடை. கடவு, s. [prov.] Way, path, வழி. கடவுமரம், s. A turn-stile--as கடவை. கடவை, s. Fault, defect, crime, குற்றம். (பிங்.) 2. A leap, jump, passing over, கடக்கை. 3. The door of a native house, garden, &c., the sill of which is to be stepped over, வாயில். 4. A ladder, ஏணி. 5. kṭumai (p. 88) s. Severity, harshness, cruelty, hard-heartedness, அகோரம். 2. Rigor, strictness, asperity, rigidness, earnestness, zealousness, கண்டிப்பு. 3. Vehemence, impetuosity, forcibleness, furiousness, மூர்க்கம். 4. Rapidity, speed, haste, velocity, விரைவு. 5. Hardness, tenacity, firmness, roughness, ruggedness, கடினம். 6. Excessiveness, intensity, immoderateness, vastness, exorbitancy, flagrancy, atrocity, malignity, heinousness, desperateness, மி குதி. 7. Ferocity, savageness, furiousness, violence, கோபம். 8. Strength, powerfulness, வன்மை. 9. Cutting in language, offensiveness, satiricalness, injuriousness, குரூரம். The leading character of this word in its different meanings is intensity. (See கொடுமை.) From this word id derived the symbolic verb கடிது. (3d person sing.) It is severe, &c., with any of the meanings of கடுமை. கடிசு, v. noun. Being too perpendicular, too little bent-- as a hoe, adze, &c., to the handle, or a plough-share to the shaft, நிமிர்வு--opp. to தணிசு. கடிச்சை, s. Niggardliness, உலோ பகுணம். கடிச்சைக்காரன், s. A niggard, a penurious man. கடியது, the neuter appellative.) That which is severe. கடியமோசம், s. Imminent danger. கடியவார்த்தை, s. Hard or angry words, offensive terms or language. கடியன், s. A severe, cruel man. கடுங்கணாளர், s. Cruel, savage, barbarous persons, கொடியோர். கடுங்கண், s. Cruelty, severity, barbarousness, unmercifulness, கொடுமை. 2. [prov.] The scallop of a palmyra leaf in a கோலுபட்டை, cut too closely, ஒலைக்கண். கடுங்கருத்து, s. Abstruse idea, farfetched unnatural meaning, கடமையானக ருத்து. கடுங்காய், s. [prov.] Unripe fruit, பழாதகாய். கடுங்காய்நுங்கு, s. Palmyra fruit, the kernel or pulp of which is too far advanced to be eatable, முதிர்ந்தநுங்கு. கடுங்காய்ச்சல், s. Violent fever, மிகுசுரம். 2. v. noun. Being over-heated-as by the smith, அதிககாய்ச்சல். 3. Being dried or scorched much in the sun, வெ யிலிலதிகமாய்க்காய்தல். கடுங்காய்ச்சலாக்காய்ந்துபோயிற்று. (The corn, &c.), is all scorched (not irrecoverably) by the sun and want of water, rain, &c. கடுங்காரநீர், s. An egg, முட்டை. கடுங்காரம், s. A powerful caustic, ஓர்வகையெரிமருந்து. 2. Excessive pungency, அதிகவுறைப்பு. கடுங்காலம், s. A hard season as in drought, scarcity, &c., a season of adversity, பஞ்சகாலம். 2. A hot season, hot weather, வெப்பமானகாலம். கடுங்காற்று, s. A strong breeze, a furious wind, a tempest, அதிககாற்று. கடுங்கூர்மை, s. Being sharp, அ திககூர்மை. 2. Salt from sesamum, கடுந்தி லாலவணம். 3. Salt of sulphur, கந்தகவுப்பு. 4. Sea salt, கடலுப்பு. கடுங்கூர்மைலவணம், s. Salt from urine, அமரியுப்பு. கடுங்கோடை, s. A severe drought, முதிர்வேனில். கடுங்கோபம், s. Violent anger. கடுஞ்சினப்பூமி--கடுந்தழற்பூமி, s. Alkaline earth, lixivium, உழமண். கடுஞ்சினேகம், s. Very close friendship, too great intimacy, அதிகசினேகம். கடுஞ்சினேகங்கண்ணுக்குப்பகை. Too great intimacy is productive of evil. கடுஞ்சுண்ணத்தி, s. Alum, சீனக் காரம். கடுஞ்சூடு, s. Great heat, அதிகசூடு. கடுஞ்செட்டு, s. Unfair traffic, trading at an exorbitant profit. கடுஞ்செய்கை, s. A cruel or wicked deed, கொடியகிரியை. கடுஞ்சொல், s. A severe word, a harsh expression, a reprimand, கொடுஞ் சொல். கடுதலைமுடிச்சு, s. [prov. prop. க டைதலைமுடிச்சு.] A treacherous contrivance, perfidy. கடுநடை, s. A tiresome walk, hard walking, a hard walk. கடுநெருப்பு, s. A fierce fire, a fire too large or too powerful for the occasion--as for culinary or chemical purposes. கடுந்தரை, s. Hard soil, வன்னிலம். கடுந்தோயல்--கடுந்தோய்ச்சல், v. noun. Over-tempering a weapon, &c., முதிர்ந்ததோயல். கடுமத்தியானம்--கடும்பகல், s. The intense heat of mid-day. கடுமுள், s. Weapons of warfare, யுத்தாயுதப்பொது. கடுமூர்க்கம், s. Great fury, vehement anger, அதிகமூர்க்கம். கடுமூர்க்கன், s. A furious man. கடும்பச்சை, s. A curious green stone, நாகப்பச்சை. கடும்பத்தி, s. Rigorous devotion, earnest excessive zeal, மிகுபத்தி. கடும்பத்தியம், s. A strict diet, கண் டிப்பானபத்தியம். கடும்புலி, s. A ferocious tiger, கொடும்புலி. கடும்புளிப்பு, s. Excessive sourness, அதிகபுளிப்பு. கடுவட்டி, s. Excessive interest, usury, அதிகவட்டி. கடுவழி, s. A rugged way, கடுமை யானவழி. கடுவிலை, s. An exorbitant price, அதிகவிலை. கடுவெயில், s. A burning sun, அதி கவெயில். கடுவெளி, s. A dry extensive plain or open space, free from trees, &c., a vast expanse, பெருவெளி. 2)

kaṇam (p. 88) s. A particle, a trifle, சி றுமை. Wils. p. 183. KAN'A. 2. A minute portion of time, a moment, காலநுட்பம். 3. A measure of time equal to thirty கலை or four minutes, ஓர்காலஅளவு. wils. p. 261. KHAN'A. 4. A company, tribe, class, clan, flock, herd, a series, கூட்டம். 5. A body of troops. (See கணகம்.) Wils. p. 277. GAN'A. 6. Long-pepper, திப்பிலி. 7. A demon, vampire, பிசாசம். 8. [in astrology.] Asterisms classed under three heads as indicating human, infernal, and divine interference in their influence on the birth of children, நட்சத்திரங்களாற்குறிக்குமூவகைக் கணம். 9. The retinue of a deity, தேவக ணம். 1. One of the ten பொருத்தம், or series of poetry auspicious or the contrary according to the feet of which it is composed. It is modified into eight kinds, ஓர் செய்யுட்பொருத்தம். 11. One of the பொருத்தம் concerning marriage, கணப்பொருத்தம். 12. A star, விண்மீன். (p.) கணந்தோறும். Every moment. ஒருகணத்திலேவந்துவிடுவேன். The anger of those who have attained to the summit of virtue, though it is ever so transient, is hardly endurable-(குறள்.) கணநாதர்--கணநாயகர், s. The attendants of Siva, கணாதிபர். கணபதி, s. Ganesa, விநாயகன். கணப்பொருத்தம், s. One of the அட்டகணம். 2. One of the விவாகப்பொருத் தம். கணப்பொழுது, s. A moment, ச ணப்பொழுது கணமூலம், s. The root of longpepper. கணமூலி, s. The சாணாக்கி herb, Ocimum, L. கணாதிபன், s. Ganesa, விக்கினேசு ரன். 2. Siva, சிவன். கணேசன், s. Ganesa, son of Siva and Parvati--god of wisdom and remover of obstacles--whence he is invoked in all new undertakings. He is represented as a short man with an elephant's head and large belly, வினாயகன். Wils. p. 278. GAN'ESHA. விவாககணம்--வதுவைக்கணம், s. The correspondence between the constellations under which the bride and bridegroom were born. It is of three kinds, viz.: 1. தேவகணம், when both the bride and bridegroom are born under the following seven constellations, அச்சு வினி, அத்தம், அனுடம், இரேவதி, சோதி, புநர்பூசம் and மிருகசீரிடம். The union of such is regarded auspicious. 2. மனிதகணம், when they are born under the following eleven constellations, உத்திரம், உரோகணி, உத்திரட்டா தி, உத்திராடம், திருவாதிரை, திருவோணம், பரணி, பூசம், பூரட்டாதி, பூரம் and பூராடம். Or even if the former be of the first class, and the latter of the second, or vice versa, it is thought indifferent. 3. இராக்கதகணம், when they are born under the following constellations, அவிட்டம், ஆயிலியம், கார்த்தி கை, கேட்டை, சதயம், சித்திரை, மகம், மூலம், and விசாகம், it is thought indifferent; but should the first be of either of the former class and the second of the last class, or vice versa, it is thought inauspicious. இக்கணம், s. This instant, now. அட்டகணம்--அஷ்டகணம், s. [in poetry.] The eight kinds of ominous feet with which the invocation of the poem may begin, viz.: (1) நிலம் (ground), நிலக் கணம், a foot consisting of three நிரை; (which see)--as கருவிளங்கனி. (2) நீர் (water), நீர்க்கணம், a foot consisting of one நேர் and two நிரை--as கூவிளங்கனி. (3) மதி (moon), சந்திரகணம், a foot consisting of one நிரை, and two நேர்; (which see)--as புளிமாங்காய். (4) இயமானன் (life, soul), இந் திரகணம், a foot consisting of three நேர்-as தேமாங்காய். A poem in which the invocation commences with any of the above four கணம், is believed by Tamulians to bring good luck to the hero of the poem. (5) சூரியன் (sun), சூரியகணம், a foot consisting of one நேர், one நிரை and one நேர்--as கூவிளங்காய்; this foreshows that the hero of the poem will soon become a coward. (6) தீ (fire), தீக் கணம், a foot consisting of one நிரை, one நேர் and one நிரை--as புளிமாங்கனி; this portends a loss of health. (7) வாயு (air), மாருதகணம், a foot consisting of two நேர் and one நிரை--as தேமாங்கனி; this foretells the loss of wealth. (8) ஆகாயம் (sky, expanse), அந்தரகணம், a foot consisting of two நிரை and one நேர்--as கருவிளங்காய்; this portends shortness of life. The last four கணம், are on the whole considered to be inauspicious. See சீர். பதினெண்கணம், s. The eighteen classes of dependent supernals, viz.: 1. அமரர், immortals, the inhabitants of Swerga. 2. சித்தர், a kind of gods. 3. அசுரர், demons. 4. தைத்தியர், another kind of demons. 5. கருடர், another kind of gods. 6. கின்னரர், celestial musicians. 7. நிருதர், a kind of demons. 8. கிம்புரு டர், a kind of celestial musicians who possess a human face and the body of a bird. 9. காந்தருவர், heavenly choristers. 1. இயக்கர், demigods who minister to gods, attendants particularly on குபே ரன். 11. விஞ்சையர், heavenly magicians. 12. பூதர், ghosts, familiar spirits. 13. பிசாசர், devils. 14. அந்தரர், wanderers. 15. முனிவர், sages, hermits, learned men. 16. உரகர், serpents. 17. ஆகாயவாசிகள், those who dwell in the air. 18. போக பூமியர், those who by the practice of virtue in this world have attained a residence in that of the particular principal deity whom they worshipped. They are ever blooming and young; their time of residence, however in this abode of happiness depends upon the merit they had acquired previous to their admission. நாற்கணம், s. The four classes of letters, viz.: 1. உயிர்க்கணம், vowels. 2. வன்கணம், the six hard-sounding letters. 3. மென்கணம், the six soft-sounding letters. 4. இடைக்கணம், the six middlesounding letters. கணம், s. kṇ (p. 89) s. The eye, விழி. 2. A hollow mark or spot, குழி. 3. A roundish hole, orifice, crevice, cavity, aperture, துவாரம். 4. A knot or point in a tree, கணு. 5. (p.) A bamboo, மூங்கில். 6. Place, location, situation, இடம். 7. A form of the locative case--that employed in grammatical examples, &c., ஏழனுருபு. 8. Kindness, benignity, graciousness, protection, கண்ணோட் டம். 9. Greatness, பெருமை. கண்கண்டதுகைசெய்யும். What the eye has seen the hand may do; i. e. we learn by observation. கண்காணநடந்தசெய்தி. Any event that happened before one's eyes. கண்ணிலேகாணப்படாது. I hate the very sight of him. 2. Even the sight of it is injurious; i. e. prejudicial--spoken where mutual animosity exists--as in the kite and snake, &c. 3. (p.) It will not appear to the eye. கண்ணிலேகுத்துகிறதோ. Does it hurt your eyes? why do you envy me, &c. கண்ணுக்கின்பமானபொருள். That which is delectable to the eye. கண்ணுக்குக்கண்ணானவன். [prov.] To pour water on plants, growing corn, &c., especially the first time. கண்கழுவுதண்ணீர், s. [prov.] Water conducted in channels for watering young plants, newly sown seed, &c. கண்காசம், s. A disease of the eye, cataract. கண்காட்சி, s. Vision, sight, பார் வை. 2. A gratifying or pleasant sight, a pageant, spectacle, show, கண்ணுக்குச்சிற ப்பு. 3. A prodigy, அதிசயம். 4. [ironically.] A disgusting ungainly sight, துக் கக்காட்சி. கண்காணம், s. Oversight, inspection, watch, மேல்விசாரிப்பு. கண்காணக்காரன்--கண்காணச்சே வகன், s. A watchman. கண்காணஞ்செலுத்த--கண்காணம் பண்ண, inf. To superintend, watch. கண்காணம்வைக்க, inf. To appoint an inspector, to set a watch. கண்காணி, s. An inspector, an overseer, a supervisor, an agent, மேல்வி சாரிப்புக்காரன். 2. One who looks after the subordinates in a government office, சிரே ஷ்டாதிகாரி. 3. [In Christ. usage.] A bishop, அத்தியட்சர். கண்காணிக்க, inf. To oversee, supervise, superintend, மேல்விசாரணைசெய் ய. கண்காணிப்பு, v. noun. Oversight, supervision. கண்காந்தல், v. noun. The hot sensation of the eyes caused by neglecting to bathe, by disease, &c., கண் ணெரிவு. கண்காரர், s. Persons who sit before a conjurer, looking at the magical paint without winking, and to whom the discoveries are made, அஞ்ச னம்பார்ப்போர். கண்குத்திபாம்பு, s. A bright green snake that is said to strike at the eye, the eye-snake; a whip-snake. கண்குவளை, s. The socket of the eye, கட்குழி. கண்குழிதல், v. noun. Sinking of the eyes by disease, emaciation, &c. கண்குளிரப்பார்க்க, inf. To refresh the eyes by viewing a pleasing object--as a dear child, &c., to feast the eyes. கண்குளிர்ச்சி, v. noun. Refreshing, gratifying, pleasing to the sight. கண்குறிப்பு, s. A significant expression of the eye, கண்சமிக்கை. கண்கூச, inf. To see obscurely from the eyes being dazzled. 2. To be weak-sighted, tender-eyed. கண்கூடு, s. Socket of the eye, கண்குவளை. 2. A thing in sight, ocular demonstration, பிரத்தியட்சம். கண்கூடாய், adv. Evidently, demonstrably. கண்கூர்மை, s. Sharpness of sight. கண்கூலி, s. A present for finding a thing lost. கண்கெட, inf. To be struck blind. 2. adv. In spite of one's own sight, to the destruction of one's own eyes, &c. கண்கெடச்செய்ய, inf. To do what one knows to be wrong--as presenting defiled food to an idol, friend, &c. கண்கெடப்பேச, inf. To falsify the evidence of one's own eyes in delivering testimony, &c. கண்கெட்டதெய்வம், s. The blind deity--a profane and familiar phrase among the vulgar used in seasons of distress. கண்கொள்ளாக்காட்சி, s. A great or wonderful object, a thing over-powering to the sight, அதிசயக்காட்சி. கண்சமிக்கை, s. A wink with the eyes. கண்சாடை, s. A winking at, taking faint notice of, &c. கண்சாய்ப்பு, s. A side-look in displeasure. 2. Connivance. 3. Partiality, favor shown by a wink, &c. கண்சாய்ப்பாய்ப்பார்க்க, inf. To look jealously, to have an evil eye. கண்சாய்ப்பாயிருக்க, inf. To overlook, be partial in judgment, to connive. கண்சிமிட்ட, inf. To make a signal with the eye. 2. To wink, to twinkle through weakness of eyes. கண்சிமிட்டு, s. A signal of the eye. கண்சுருட்ட, inf. To entice one by uncommon beauty, lustre, &c., to cantivate, to fascinate. கண்செருகல்--கண்சொருகல், v. noun. Rolling up of the eyes--as in swoons, fits, death-bed, and sometimes in sleep. கண்ணஞ்ச, inf. To fear, dread, as excited by the sight of a superior, lightning, &c. கண்ணஞ்சனம், s. Collyrium, the ointment used to blacken the eye-lashes. 2. Blue vitriol. கண்ணடைக்க, inf. To choke, stop up--as the orifice of a spring, a nipple, துவாரமடைக்க. கண்ணடைய, inf. To become choked or stopped up--as a hole, &c., தூவாரமடைபட. 2. [prov.] To cease shooting--as the head or heart of a plant, பயிரின்குருத்துக்கண்ணடைய. இடியப்பக்குழல்கண்ணடைந்துபோயிற்று. The இடியப்ப mould is stopped up. கண்ணடைந்தபால், s. Milk injured by being kept too long. கண்ணப்பன், s. One of the sixtythree devotees of Siva who scooped out his own eye and consecrated it to that deity--also called திண்ணன். கண்ணயர்ந்துபோதல், v. noun. [impr. கண்ணசந்துபொதல்.] Being heavy or drowsy. கண்ணரிப்பு, v. noun. A kind of itching disease in the eye, கண்ணில்வரு மோர்நோய். கண்ணருள், s. Favor. கண்ணழற்சி, v. noun. A glass, glass in general, தருப்பணம். 2. A mirror, a looking glass, முகம்பார்க்குங்கண்ணாடி. 3. Spectacles, மூக்குக்கண்ணாடி. கண்ணாடிச்சால், s. Blank squares, or balks left between the furrows in cross ploughing, திடரிடைவிட்டுழுமுழவு. கண்ணாடிச்சுவர், s. A small wall to screen the fire in a room. கண்ணாடிபார்க்க, inf. To look into a looking glass. கண்ணாடிப்பலகை, s. A plank with a peeping-hole. கண்ணாடிப்புடவை, s. A thin inferior kind of cloth. முகக்கண்ணாடி, s. A looking glass. மூக்குக்கண்ணாடி, s. [com.] Covering the eyes with the hands or doubling the upper eyelid over the eyeball inside out, and running round as children in play, ஓர்விளையாட்டு. 2. Giddiness, dizziness, கண்மயக்கம். கண்ணாம்பூச்சியாட, inf. To run about in play with the eyes covered, or with the eyelid doubled over. கண்ணாம்பொத்தி, s. [prop. கண் பொத்தி.] A game, children's play, hideand-seek. கண்பொத்திவிளையாட, inf. To play at hide-and-seek. கண்ணாயிரம், s. The argus of the Hindus. கண்ணாயிருக்க, inf. To be watchful, vigilant, attentive, looking steadfastly, நோக்கமாயிருக்க. கண்ணுக்குக்கண்ணாயிருக்கிறான். He is as dear or precious as one's eyes. கண்ணாரக்காண, inf. Crude camphor, பச்சைக்கருப்பூரம். கண்ணீருகுக்க--கண்ணீர்சொரிய --கண்ணீர்வடிக்க--கண்ணீர்விட, inf. To shed tears, கண்ணீர்சிந்த. கண்ணீர்ததும்ப--தளம்ப, inf. Something hurts my eye. 2. My eye smarts from ophthalmia. கண்ணூறு--கண்ணேறு, s. The blight of the eyes, an unlucky look supposed to cause sickness, &c., திட்டி தோஷம். விண்ணேறுதப்பினாலுங்கண்ணேறுதப்பாது. One may escape a thunderbolt, but to escape an evil eye is impossible. மதன்கண்ணேறெய்தலுங்கழிந்ததோ. (Has the waist) become so attenuated through the influence of kama's eyes? கண்ணூறுகழிக்க, inf. To dispel the blight of an evil eye by prescribed ceremonies. கண்ணூறுபட, inf. To suffer or experience the ill effects of evil eyes. கண்ணெச்சில், s. Fascinating, bewitching, blighting, &c.--as by a glance, and otherwise, as in food looked on with an envious eye, &c., கண்ணூறு. கருப்புரவிளக்கமேந்திக்கண்ணெச்சில்கழித்திட் டாரே. To pluck out the eye. கண்ணைமூடிக்கொண்டிருக்க--கண் மூடிக்கொண்டிருக்க inf. To connive at. 2. To be indifferent about, to be careless. என்னைப்பாராமற்கண்மூடிக்கொண்டார். To look intently, gaze, to eye, see, look upon, பார்க்க. கண்ணோக்கு, v. noun. Gaze, glance, கண்பார்வை. கண்ணோட, inf. To run out--as the sight on an object of desire, to look at with desire, cast wistful or lustful glances, விருப்பமாகப்பார்க்க. 2. To watch, look after, inspect, superintend, பார்வை யிட. 3. To examine cursorily--as a book, writing, &c., மேலெழுச்சியாய்ப்பார்க்க. 4. To be kind, benignant, gracious, to treat kindly, be indulgent, தயவாயிருக்க. 5. To be partial, to have the mind biased toward one, to yield to feelings of compassion, தாட்சிணியஞ்செய்ய.--Note. All the meanings have reference to sight as prompting to passion and action. உடையவன்கண்ணோடாப்பயிர், s. Growing corn not looked after by the owner. கண்ணோட்டம், s. A glance, a look, the scope of the sight, கடைக்கண்பா ர்வை. 2. Regard to persons, either in a good or bad sense, kindness as prompted at the moment, partiality, favoritism, glow of kind feelings toward a friend, reluctance to deny his request, &c., கடாட்சம். 3. Civility, complaisance, regard, மரியாதை. 4. Discerning by the eye, close examination, scrutiny, பார்வை யிடுகை. இவனவனிடத்திற்கண்ணோட்டம்வைத்தான். He was very kind to him. கண்திட்டம்--கண்மதிப்பு, s. Guess by the eye, or opinion from sight. கண்திட்டி--கண்திஷ்டி--கண்தீமை, s. The blight of the eye, திட்டிதோஷம். கண்திட்டிகழிக்க, inf. [prov.] A small jackfruit or a small bunch of palmyra or other fruit attached to a larger one. கண்புகைச்சல், v. noun. A disease of the eye. ஓர்நோய். 2. Dimness of sight from age, disease, கண்மங்கல். கண்புதைக்க. inf. To cover the eyes, to hoodwink, கண்பொத்த. (p.) 2. To weaken or prevent the sight--as dust, &c. கண்பூத்தல், v. noun. Ocular deception, illusion, sudden appearance and disappearance--as of a phantom, a thing stolen, &c., கண்ணுக்குத்தோன்றிமறைகை. கண்மின்ன, inf. To flash--as the eyes on fainting or by a blow. கண்மின்னியார்த்தல், v. noun. Growing dim as the eyes when one is dizzy. கண்முகிழ்க்க--கண்மூட, inf. To shut the eyes, cover the eyes, to hoodwink, கண்ணிமைசேர்க்க. 2. To become drowsy, go to sleep, தூங்க. 3. To die, சாவ. 4. To be careless, indifferent, unconcerned at any thing, கவலையில்லா திருக்க. கண்மூடிவிழிக்குமுன்னம். In less than a wink. ஒருகண்மூடியொருகண்விழிக்கிறவன். He who is partial, biased. என்னைப்பாராமற்கண்மூடிக்கொண்டான். He does not look at me, he has closed his eyes on me. கண்மை, s. A collyrium for the eyelids, கண்ணுக்கிடுமை. 2. A kind of benignant look, கண்ணோட்டம். கண்வரி, s. Streaks, especially red, in the white of the eye. கண்வளர, inf. To go to sleep, to sleep, நித்திரைசெய்ய. கண்விட, inf. To break--as the eye of a needle, the rivet hole of a knife, ஊசிமுதலியவற்றின்கண்ணொடிய. 2. To form as butter in churning, வெண்ணெய் திரள. கண்விடுக்க, inf. To paint the black of the eyes in a picture, சித்திரப்பா வைக்குக்கண்வரைய. 2. To open the eyes of an idol giving it the appearance of sight, விக்கிரகத்துக்குக்கண்திறக்க. (சிந்தாமணி.) Seeing clearly, having the sight restored after disease of the eyes or dimness. கண்வைக்க, inf. To be benignant, gracious, kind, &c., toward one, கிருபை வைக்க. 2. To look wistfully upon a thing, to desire, look at lustfully, விருப்பம் வைக்க. 3. To form as a hole in an ulcer, புண்ணிற்கண்வைக்க. அவளவன்மேற்கண்வைத்தாள். She cast her eyes upon him. வாக்குக்கண்--மாறுகண், s. A squint eye. மயிற்றோகைக்கண், s. The spangles in a peacock's tail. கடைக்கண், s. The corner of the eyes. கடைக்கண்பார்வை, s. A sideglance. 2. Regard, favor, condescension. சல்லடைக்கண், s. The holes of a sieve or strainer. ஓரக்கண், s. As வாக்குக்கண். ஓரக்கண்ணன், s. One who is squint-eyed. பருக்கண், s. The orifice of a boil. உடலக்கண்ணன், s. A disease of the eye which causes the sight to fail in the dark. வலைக்கண், s. The meshes of a net. ஊற்றுக்கண், s. The orifice of a spring. பறைக்கண், s. The end of a drum. கொடுங்கண்--தறுகண்--வன்கண், s. Envy, invidiousness. ஆயிரங்கண்ணன், s. Indra who has a thousand eyes. (p.) கூசுகண், s. As சூகைக்கண். விரிகண், s. kālam (p. 104) s. Time. duration, பொழுது-Note. In Hindu philosophy, காலம் is said by the Saivas to have proceeded from மோகினி Maya, and to be a co-efficient cause with Siva in the acts of creation, preservation and destruction. It is Time personified, and according to the Hindu metaphysicians, one of the seven வித்தியாத் துவம். (சிவ. சி.) 2. Season of the year or life; also a specific time of the day, பருவம். 3. A seasonable or proper time, opportunity, season, சமயம். Wils. p. 216. KALA. 4. Day-break, விடியல். 5. (fig.) (c.) The different number of years of influence ascribed to the respective planets as operative on the lives of persons, ஆயுள்நியதிச்சக்கரம். 2. Guess of time from mere inspection, காலஉத்தேசம். 2. Reckoning of time, காலக்கணக்கு. (p.) காலசந்தி, s. The daily morning worship; also applicable to that at noon and evening. 2. The interval between any two yugas, kalpas, &c. See கற்பம் and சந்தி. திரிகாலசந்தி, s. Worship in the morning, at noon and in the evening. காலசுகம், s. Time in reference to the influences of planets upon the fortune, health, &c., of a person. காலநோக்காடு, s. [prov. in child-birth.] Natural and timely labor. காலந்தள்ள, inf. To pass one's days, to pass one's time, to maintain one's self, to live, காலம்போக்க. காலப்பரிச்சேதம், s. Discernment--as to the time of an event or the existences of a thing. It is one of the three பரிச்சேதம் modes of ascertaining facts. காலபரிபாகம், s. The maturity of the soul, or time for its attaining bliss, having eliminated its good and evil propensities. காலபேதம்--காலவித்தியாசம்--கால வேற்றுமை, s. Difference of time with respect to the changes it produces. காலபோகம், s. A crop of grain or fruits in the proper season. 2. The enjoyment or suffering resulting from previous moral actions, to which a living being at distant times is subjected, காலப் பயனுகர்வு. காலப்பெயர், s. Nouns or names of time--as year, month. 2. Nouns derived from names of time--as பங்குனன் (one born in the பங்குனி month). காலப்பெயர்ச்சி, s. Change of season or monsoon; unseasonable weather, கால விகற்பம். காலமயக்கம்--காலமயக்கு, s. [in gram.] An improper use of the tenses, காலவழு. 2. An allowed deviation in the use of tenses, காலவழுவமைதி. காலமலைவு, s. Confusion of statement in regard to time--as asserting that the lotus blooms in the evening, or the lily during the day. காலமல்லாக்காலம், s. An unfortunate, fatal time; an unseasonable time, அகாலம். காலமழை, s. Rain in the proper season, பருவத்திற்பெய்யுமழை. காலமறிய, inf. To know the times so as to adapt one's self to them, காலவகைய றிய. 2. To know things past, present or future intuitively or by apiritual sight --as yogis, காலவியற்கையறிய. காலமாறு, Morning by morning, every morning, காலைதோறும். (c.). காலமானம், s. [in arith.] Time measure. காலமிருத்து, s. Death at the destined season--as distinguished from accidental death, விதித்தகாலத்திலடையுமரணம். காலமே--காலத்தாலே. In the morning, early, betimes. காலம்பண்ண--காலம்பண்ணிப்போக, inf. To finish one's time, to die. காலம்பார்க்க, inf. To look or watch for a proper time or opportunity, சமயம் பார்க்க. காலம்புரள, inf. To present a manifest revolution--as in the order of things; to be irregular, deranged, &c.--as the events of a time--as toddy-drawers seen riding in palankeens, &c. காலம்போக்க, inf. To pass the times. 2. To while away time. காலவகை, s. Seasons, times, காலக் கூறுபாடு. 2. Circumstances depending on time, காலவேறுபாடு. காலவர்த்தமானம், s. Events of the times. காலவழக்கம், s. Customs of the times. காலவழு, s. [in gram.] An improper use of the tenses--as the past for the future, &c., காலக்குற்றம். காலவாகுபெயர், s. [in gram.] Nouns of time or portions of time, used by metonymy for what is intimately connected with time--as கார்த்திகை, the name of a month, for a plant which mostly blossoms during the month. காலவிடைநிலை, s. [in gram.] Characteristics of tenses, காலத்தைக்காட்டுமிடை நிலை. They are 1. த், ட், ற், and இன் for the past. 2. ஆநின்று, கின்று and கிறு for the present. 3. ப், ல், for the future. There are some other characteristics-as மன், இசின், ய், இ, ன், &c. காலவிரைவு, v. noun. Swiftness or rapid flight of time. காலாகாலம், s. Times seasonable and unseasonable, auspicious and inauspicious, நற்காலந்துர்க்காலம். 2. One time or another, not often, not frequently. (c.) காலாக்கினி, s. The fire which is to destroy the world at the end of the great yuga; a deluge-fire said to be in reserve in the nethermost part of the earth. Wils. p. 218. KALAGNI. 2. One of the two-hundred and twenty-four புவ னம் under the regency of Kálágni. காலாக்கினியுருத்திரம், s. One of the thirty-two உபநிடதம். காலாக்கினியுருத்திரர், s. Rudra or the deity in the lowest region, in charge of the deluge-fire. There are ten subordinate Rudras, who resemble their chief. காலாந்தம், s. The end of time, கால முடிவு; [ex. அந்தம்.] காலாந்தரம், s. Intermediate space of time, process of time, காலநடை. 2. Meanwhile, காலவிடை; [ex அந்தரம், interval.] காலேச்சுரவாதம், s. The metaphysical philosophy which maintains that Time is God. காலோசிதம், s. A fit, proper time, உச் சிதகாலம்; [ex உசிதம்.] அந்தியகாலம், s. The time of death. ஆங்கால மெய்வருந்த வேண்டா வதுதானே தேங்காய்க் கிளநீர்போற் சேருமே, போங்காலம் காட்டானை தின்ற கனியதுபோ லாகுமே தேட்டாளன் றேடுந் தனம். Wealth shall or itself accumulate at the appointed time of increase, as the liquor within a cocoanut, and no toll is required; but at the fixed time for ruin, the riches of a hard-working man shall pass away like the contents of a woodapple eaten by an elephant. எக்காலமும். At what time soever, always. சாங்காலம், s. The time of death or ruin. திரிகாலம்--முக்காலம், s. The three divisions of time, present, past, and future. 2.The three tenses of a verb. திரிசந்திகாலம். குமுறு
kumuṟu (p. 123) கிறது, குமுறினது, ம், குமுற, v. n. To thunder, மேகமுழங்க. 2. To sound, to roar; to bellow, to resound, to rumble, to emit a roaring hollow sound, இரைய. 3. To bubble in boiling, to efferversce, கொதிக்க. 4. To sound--as the noise of a multitude, பேசலாலொலிக்க. குமுறிவிழுகிறான். He is bellowing, vociferating; is wanton and mettlesome. உலைகொதித்துக்குமுறுகிறது. The water (for rice, &c.), is boiling up with a rumbling noise, &c. முலையிற்பால்குமுறிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறது. The milk in hte breast, or udder, is working up to gush out, or to distend the vessels. குமுற இடிக்க, inf. To pound foreibly in a mortar, in beating out the grain, &c. குமுறக்காய, inf. நெஞ்சு
neñcu (p. 279) s. The mind, the heart; [in popular use.] Consciousness, thought, reason, judgment and will, மனம். 2. Conscience, மனச்சாட்சி. 3. Breast, bosom, chest, மார்பு. 4. Throat, தொண்டை. 5. (fig.) Boldness, courage, daring heroism, தைரியம். 6. Audacity, venturousness, துணிவு. (c.) மறவாதேநெஞ்சே. Forget not O my soul! எனக்குநெஞ்சைக்கரிக்கிறது. I feel a nausea in the throat. இத்தனைநெஞ்சுனக்கிருக்கிறதோ. Are you so bold? நீசெய்ததுஎன்னெஞ்சிலிருக்கிறது. What you have done is remembered. நெஞ்சிலேமிதிக்கிறான். He treats me with great disrespect. நெஞ்சைத்தட்டிப்பார். Ask your own breast. நெஞ்சையொழித்தொருவஞ்சகமில்லை. There is no fraud in which the heart is not concerned. (Avv.) உன்னெஞ்சிற்சிறாயெடுத்துப்போடுவேன். I will reduce your pride. உன்நெஞ்சுகல்நெஞ்சு. Your breast is a stony breast. நெஞ்சடைத்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To be choked, or stifled in the throat. நெஞ்சடைப்பு--நெஞ்சடைவாதம், s. Obstruction in the chest, ஓர்நோய். நெஞ்சழிதல், v. noun. Failing or being overwhelmed, as the heart with sorrow, or fear. 2. Loss of consciousness, through sorrow, fear, drunkenness, &c. 3. Being overcome with lust; losing self-control. நெஞ்சறிய, inf. [as an adverb.] Consciously. நெஞ்சறியப்பொய்சொல்லலாமோ. Can you knowingly lie? நெஞ்சறிவிளக்கம், s. A treatise. நெஞ்சன், s. [in combin.] A hard-hearted person. See கன்னெஞ்சகன், வன்னெஞ்சகன். 2. [prov.] A bold, daring person, துணி வுடையோன். 3. A person of self-importance, இடும்பன். நெஞ்சாங்கட்டை, s. The breast-bone, as நெஞ்செலும்பு. 2. A log placed across the breast of a corpse to prevent its rising while burning, பிணத்தின்நெஞ்சுக்கட் டை. 3. (fig.) A plot to destroy one, தூராலோசனை. இதுவுனக்குநெஞ்சாங்கட்டைக்கோ. Throbbing of the heart, from fear, &c. நெஞ்சிலேகல்--நெஞ்சிற்கல், s. (fig.) A heavy calamity, பெருந்துக்கம். நெஞ்சிலேகல்லுப்போட்டீர். You have put a stone in my breast, used in lamentation for the dead. நெஞ்சிலேதெண்டல், v. noun. [prov.] Affecting the breast--as wind, spasm, or cramp, நெஞ்சிற்றடுக்க. நெஞ்சிளைக்க, inf. To become fearful, timid, cowardly. நெஞ்சிற்பாரம், s. (fig.) Burden or weight of responsibility oppressing the heart. 2. Sorrow of heart. நெஞ்சுகரிப்பு--நெஞ்சுக்கரிப்பு, v. noun. A nausea in the throat. நெஞ்சுகாய, inf. To become dry, gnawing, &c., as the breast in disease, causing thirst, &c. 2. [prov.] To faint as the heart through sorrow, fear, &c. நெஞ்சுக்கட்டு-நெஞ்சுக்கோழை, s. Pectoral disease from phlegm, as asthma. நெஞ்சுக்குத்து--நெஞ்சுவலி, s. Pain in the chest. நெஞ்சுதட்ட, inf. To tap the breast in defiance, as a challenge. 2. To tap the breast with a boast of doing an exploit. நெஞ்சுதுடித்தல், v. noun. Throbbing of the heart from fear. 2. Sympathizing with one in affliction, பரிதாபப்படல். நெஞ்சுத்தடிமல், s. Catarrh seated in the breast, cold and cough. நெஞ்சுத்துணிகரம்--நெஞ்சுத்துணிவு, s. Boldness of heart, heroism, intrepidity. நெஞ்சுநெஞ்சென்றுகுத்துதல், v. noun. Striking the breast with the tips of the fingers, in bewailing the dead, &c. See மார்படித்தல். நெஞ்சுநோ, s. Pain in the breast. 2. (fig.) Grief of heart. நெஞ்சுபக்கிடுதல், v. noun. Being struck with sudden fear or sorrow. நெஞ்சுபதறுதல், v. noun. Fluttering of the heart at the sight of a distressed object, of unjust suffering in another, or of danger of injustice to one's self. நெஞ்சுபுண்ணாக--நெஞ்சம்புண்ணாக, inf.
