akattiyaṉ (p. 2) --அகஸ்தியன், s. A poet and sage celebrated in the Ramayanam, Skandam and other works of antiquity. He is regarded as the former of the Tamil language which he is said to have learned of Skanda the son of Siva. He is also the reputed author of several works, still extant, in whole or in part, in the Tamil language; such as, a Grammar, Materia Medica, a work on Astrology, Astronomy, and several essays on the unity of the divine being, as opposed to the popular system of polytheism, &c. He is regarded as the son of both Mythra and Varuna by Urvasi; is represented to be of very short stature, and to have been born in a water jar. He is famed for having compressed and swallowed the ocean, for the sake of the celestials. Other wonderful stories are also told of him, and received with undoubted credence. akpporuḷ (p. 2) s. [ex. அகம், mind, et பொருள்.] Rules for amatory poems, அ கப்பொருள்விதி. 2. Rules for reasoning, தர்க் கவிதி. 3. mental enjoyments in love, இன் பம். 4. A book treating of mental delectation, ஓரிலக்கணம். அகப்பொருள் is developed in these three constituents, viz., 1. முதற்பொருள், primary arrangements of nature with regard to (a) நிலம், soil, in five varieties, and (b) பொழுது, time in two grand divisions. 2. கருப்பொருள், natural peculiarities incidental to each of the divisions of the soil under 14 heads viz., (a) ஆரணங்கு, peculiar gods belonging to a place, tutelary deities or penates, (b) உயர்ந் தோர், chiefs or lords of the district, (c) இழிந்தோர், subjects or inhabitants under them, (d) புள், birds, (e) விலங்கு, beasts, (f) ஊர், city or town, (g) நீர், water, (h) பூ, flowers, (i) மரம். trees, (j) உணா, food, (k) பறை, drum, (l) யாழ், musical instruments, (m) பண், tune, and (n) தொழில், occupation, trade or mode of earning a livelihood. 3. உரிப்பொருள், essential characteristics of lovers. The subject matter of this treatise, to which the two former are auxiliary or conducive, is developed in five dispositions or actions, either mental or coporal, viz., (a) புணர்தல், union or the state in which husbands and wives are together in their family, (b) பிரிதல், separation when for lawful purposes, (c) இருத்தல், the state in which they continue solitary, especially the bride, (d) ஊடல், love quarrels, (e) இ ரங்கல், weeping and lamentation in any period of their life for any cause. These five characteristics are respectively ascribed to the above five species of soil, as appropriately adapted to their nature, as புணர்தல் to குறிஞ்சி, பிரிதல் to பாலை, இருத்தல் to முல்லை, ஊடல் to மருதம், and இரங்கல் to நெய்தல். இந் த ஐந்து ஒழுக்கத்தையுங்குறித்துப் பாடும்பொழுது அத தற்குக்குறித்த திணையிலுள்ள கருப்பொருள்களையெடுத் துப் பாடுதன்முறையாம். A kind of play in writing, arranging letters in a fanciful manner, மிறைக்கவியி லொன்று. அக்கரவிலக்கணம்--அட்சரலட்ச ணம், s. The properties, forms, names, powers, &c. of letters, orthography. 2. One of the sixty-four கலைஞானம், ex இலக் கணம். அக்கராரம்பம்--அட்சராரம்பம், s. Beginning to teach a child the letters of the alphabet, with appropriate ceremonies, on the fifth year. 46) *

añcaṉam (p. 7) s. Blackness, darkness, black coloring, கறுப்பு. 2. A collyrium or black paint for the eyelids, கண் ணுக்கிடுமை. 3. A black coloring or magic ointment put on the hand, &c. to assist in discovering lost, stolen, or concealed property; a species of magic, சேமப்பொருள் முதலியகாட்டுமை. 4. Medicine for the eye when a person is bitten by a venomous snake, and also for one who has fits, கலிக்கம். 6. A black stone, marble, சலவைக்கல். (p.) அஞ்சனக்கலிக்கம், s. A magic ointment rubbed on the eyes or palms of the hand of one who wishes to discover any thing lost. அஞ்சனக்கல், s. Sulphuret of antimony, a combustible used in fireworks, giving a blue flame. See நிமிளை. (M. Dic.) அஞ்சனக்காரன், s. A soothsayer, conjurer, sorcerer. அஞ்சனக்கோல், s. A paint brush or pencil to blacken the eyelids. அஞ்சனத்திரயம், s. Three species of magical ointments, viz., பூதாஞ்சனம், that which assists in discovering whether a person is possessed or not; சோராஞ் சனம், that which assists in discovering stolen property; and பாதாளாஞ்சனம், that which assists in discovering treasure buried under ground. அஞ்சனபாஷாணம், s. One of the thirty-two kinds of native arsenic. அஞ்சனமெழுத, inf. To paint the eyes. அஞ்சனவண்ணன், s. Vishnu, the blue colored, திருமால். அஞ்சனாவதி, s. The female of the elephant supporting the north-east, or the eighth angle, of the world, வடகீழ்த்தி சையானைக்குப்பெண்யானை. அஞ்சனி, s. A small flower-tree, காயா, Memecylon, L. 2. añcu (p. 7) கிறேன், அஞ்சினேன், வேன், அஞ்ச, v. a. [used with the dative, sometimes with the accusative.] To fear, dread, பயப்பட, as அவனுக்கஞ்சுகிறேன், I fear him; அவனையஞ்சினான். He feared him. அஞ்சல், v. noun. Fearing, dreading, பயப்படல், Also the optative, வியங் கோண்முற்று. 2. Defeat, தோல்வி. அஞ்சாப்பட்டயம், s. [prov.] A certificate from the king, formerly inscribed on metal, clearing a man from the charge of guilt and re-establishing his rights as a citizen; a writ of authority, a security against oppression or ill-treatment. 3. Shrinking, compressing,--as a tortoise its members; reduction, condensation, compression, &c. of the powers of the mind, syncope from snake bite, &c., ஒடுக்கம். 1. [prov.] Fireworks in layers, producing successive discharges, பாணம். 11. Treasure kept in concealment, or laid by unobserved by others, புதைபொருள். 12.
