அளவை
aḷvai (p. 33) s. Measure, a definite quantity, அளவு. 2. Bound, limit, எல்லை. 3. A measure, or thing to measure with, அளவுக்கருவி. 4. A medium of knowledge, காட்சிமுதலியபிரமாணங்கள். 5. The name of a logical work, அளவைநூல். 6. Day, நாள். There are eight ways of obtaining the true knowledge of a thing or occurrence; viz.: 1. காட்சி, by the senses, especially the sight--by experiments, பிரத்தியட்சப்பிர மாணம். 2. அனுமானம், by inference, by drawing conclusions from what has been admitted or is supposed true--as நெருப்பிற்கு வியாப்பியம் புகையென்றறிதல், where smoke is, there is fire. 3. ஆகமம், by the testimony or assertions of great men, either orally or in writing, பெரியோர்வாய்ச்சொல். 4. அரு த்தாபத்தி, by deduction established from premises, அந்நியதாவநுபபத்தி--as இரவிலுணவி ல்லாமற் பகலுண்ணாதவனுக்குப் பருத்தல்கூடாதென் னுமுணர்ச்சி. 5. உவமானம், by similarity or likeness, comparison, மரை பசுப்போலென்னுமு ணர்ச்சி. 6. அபாவம், proof of non-existence-as முன்னில்லை, பின்னில்லை, முழுதுமில்லை, ஒன்றி ன்மற்றொன்றில்லை. 7. ஐதீகம், by traditional testimony--as இம்மாத்திற்பேயுளதென்பது, this tree is haunted by the devil. 8. சம்பவம், proof of co-existence--as ஆயிரத்தினூறுண்டெ னல், where a thousand is, there is a hundred. (p.) அளவையாகுபெயர், s. A metonymy in reference to measure, weight, number, &c. In Nannool, four kinds are given, எண்ணலளவையாகுபெயர், எடுத்தல ளவையாகுபெயர், முகத்தலளவையாகுபெயர், and நீட்டலளவையாகுபெயர். 15) *

irākkatar (p. 50) --இராட்சதர், s. One of the two classes of foes to the Devas or genii, sometimes improperly called giants. They appear to be of various descriptions, being either powerful Titans in a preternatural form--as Ravana and others--or mischievous and cruel goblins, demons, vampires or fiends, haunting cemeteries, devouring human beings, &c., அரக்கர். Wils. p. 699.RAKSHASA. இராக்கதகணம், s. A set of demons --as Rakshasas one of the eighteen classes. இராக்கதமணம், s. See மணம். இராக்கதி, s. A female fiend. இராக்ஷதகிர்த்தியம், s. uṟai (p. 68) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. n. To abide, lodge, inhabit, sojourn, வாசஞ் செய்ய. 2. To be, or to dwell in a natural, appropriate place, or element--as men in houses, villages, &c.--fishes in water-birds in the sky, &c., இருக்க. 3. To haunt, frequent, infest, retire to--as birds to the grove--bees to their hive--snakes to their holes. &c., சஞ்சரிக்க. 4. To thicken, congeal, curdle, coagulate, freeze, இறுக. (c.) 5. (p.) To be close, thick or clustered-as trees in a forest, செறிய. உறைந்தபனி--உறைபனி, s. Hoar frost, ice. உறைந்தமழை--உறைமழை, s. Snow. உறைபதி, s. One's place of residence, வசிக்குமூர். உறையிடம்--உறைவிடம், s. A place of residence; an inner apartment. உறையுள், s. Abode, appropriate abiding place for human beings, or other creatures, தங்குமிடம். 2. A house, வீடு. 3. A village, town, ஊர். 4. A country, a district, நாடு. 5. A bed, a sleeping place, a dormitory, மக்கட்படுக்கை. 6. A village or town in an agricultural district, மருதநிலத்தூர். 7. Lifetime, ஆயுள். (p.) உறையூர், s. Villages, towns, &c., in cultivated districts, மருதநிலத்தூர். (p.) பேயுறைந்தகாடு, s. A jungle haunted by demons. மெய்யுறைகின்றநா, s. A truthful tongue. வௌவாலுறைந்தவீடு, s. kuṇapam (p. 118) s. A dead body, a corpse, a carcass, பிணம். Wils. p. 227. KUN'APA. 2. A goblin or ogre, supposed to haunt cemeteries, and animate dead bodies, பிசா சம். (p.) குணபவூணர், s. kuyyakar (p. 124) s. A class of demigods in the service of Kuvéra, to whose custody his treasures were committed, ஓர்தேவகணம். Wils. p. 294. GUHYAKA. (காசி.) குய்யகலோகம், s. The region next above the earth, being the haunt of the Guhyaka demigods. (காந்.) 18) *

kulāvu (p. 127) கிறேன், குலாவினேன், வேன், குலாவ, v. n. To walk or move about; to haunt, சஞ்சரிக்க. 2. To hold familiar intercourse; to enjoy one's society; to be social, வங்கணஞ்செய்ய. 3. To shine, to be conspicuous, பிரகாசிக்க. 4. To move in state; to rejoice, to experience delight, கொண்டாட. 5. To admire, praise, extol, புகழ. 6. To bend; to be bent or curved, வளைய. குலாயகொய்யுளை. சஞ்சரி
cañcari (p. 157) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. n. [ex. Sa. Sanchara.] To move about--as in a rightful domain or natural element; to live or have residence--as men in houses, beasts in the forest, fishes in water, &c., உலாவிக்கொண்டிருக்க. 2. To frequent, roam about--as beasts; to haunt, infest, range, திரிய. 3. To lodge, sojourn, dwell, abide, inhabit, வாச ஞ்செய்ய. 4. To cohabit, கூடச்சஞ்சரிக்க. 5. (R.) To converse with one, சம்பாஷிக்க. சஞ்சரிப்பு, v. noun. Dwelling, wandering, &c., சஞ்சரிக்கை. (Rare.) 7) *

canti (p. 159) s. A joining, junction, meeting, union, combination, இசைப்பு. 2. The meeting or junction of two or more roads, rivers, &c., or the place of such meeting, சந்திக்குமிடம். 3. The joining of words, and the changes of letters by elision, reduplication, and substitution in the coalescence of words with each other, or in the addition to a word of particles expressing case, or in the formation of derivatives from a primitive, விகுதிமுதலிய வற்றின்புணர்ச்சி. 4. The intervals of morning and evening twilight, especially the latter, regarded as the union of the day and night, மாலைநேரம்; thus அந்திசந்தி, morning and evening. (c.) 5. A period at the expiration of each yuga, connecting it with the following, and occupying 1/12 of each, during which a gradual change takes place in the world, introductory to the peculiarities of the succeeding yuga; also a period of the same length, as the Satya yuga at the end of each Manvantara and of each Kalpa, யுகசந்தி. W. p. 889. SANDHI. 6. Reconciliation, pacification, forming friendship, நட்பாதல். 7. The bamboo, so called from its knots, மூங்கில். 8. The stated worship for each individual, morning and evening, and with some in mid-day, சந்தியாவந்தனம். (p.) 9. Division of time in a day, especially meal time--as ஒருசந்தி, one meal, it being fast-day. (c.) 1. [loc.] Juncture, crisis, a critical point of time, தறுவாய். சந்திகாவலன், s. [prov.] As அந்திகாவ லன், which see. சந்திக்கரை, s. The place where several roads or rivers meet. (c.) சந்திபண்ண--சந்திமுடிக்க, inf. To perform he daily private worship, morning, noon and evening. (p.) சந்திப்பாடு, v. noun. A mishap supposed to be caused by a malignant spirit in a cross way, or other haunted place. சந்திமறிக்க, inf. [loc.] to avert the displeasure of malignant divinities, in time of epidemics, by presenting them cooling offerings at cross roads, and thus to stop their progress into the country. சந்திமிதிக்க, inf. [prov.] To pass across way at an auspicious time, as after recovering from sickness, especially from the small pox, on first going out. சந்திமிதிப்பிக்க, inf. To cause a child to walk the first time on the 6th month in places where two or more ways meet. சந்தியாகாலம், s. The period of evening twilight, மாலைநேரம். 2. The three seasons of stated worship. (See சந்தி.) 3. The interval between one yuga and another, யுகசந்தி; [ex Sa. Sandhya.] W. p. 89. சந்தியாகாலகருமம், s. Evening devotion. (R.) சந்தியாராகம், s. The redness of the sky at sun-set. (R.) சந்தியாவந்தனம்--சந்தியாவந்தனை, s. [prov. சந்திவந்தனை.] Worship at any of the three stated periods; [ex வந்தனை, worship.] சந்தியிலிருக்க, inf. [prov.] To be ruined, to be driven into the street. சந்தியில்வைக்க, inf. To ruin a person, (lit.) to drive him into the streets. சந்திவிக்கிரகம், s. Forming a friendship with enemies to compass their ruin; one of the modes recommended for dealing with enemies. (p.) சந்தியிற்கொண்டுவர, inf. [prov. fig.] To expose a person to ridicule and shame (lit.) to bring to the street. முச்சந்தி, s. The meeting of three roads. நாற்சந்தி, s. The meeting of four roads or streets. சொற்சந்தி, s. One word combining with another in sense. சந்திவழு, s. Impropriety in the use of grammatical sandhi. The three grammatical sandhis as applied to words of Sanscrit origin are, 1. தீர்க்கசந்தி. 2. குண சந்தி. 3. விருத்திசந்தி. To these a fourth, ஆ திவிருத்திசந்தி is added. (நன்.) சந்திகாரியம், s. cappai (p. 160) s. [vul.] That which is flat, flattened or shrunk, as சப்பட்டை. 2. [loc.] The hips, haunch, flank; shoulder blade, சந்து. 3. [vul.] Leanness, emaciation, வலி யின்மை. [ex Sa. Charpa, flat.] சப்பைமூக்கு, s. A flat nose. சப்பைமூஞ்சி, s. [vul.] A flat face. சப்பைவாய், s. A mouth with lips flat or shrunk. சப்பைத்தலை, s. [prov.] Flat head; spoken of men, cows, &c. சப்பைக்காய், s. [prov.] Flat fruits--as some mangoes, &c. சப்பைப்பிடிப்பு, v. noun. Rheumatism in the hips, hip-gout. சப்பையொடிந்தமாடு, s. An animal lame in the hips. சப்பைவாக்கு, s. [loc.] The flat side --as of a plank, &c.--as சப்பட்டைவாக்கு. 50) *

cālakaṭangkaṭar (p. 179) s. One of the class of foes to the Devas; the Rakshas, இராக்க தர். (சது.) [ex சால, illusive, கடம், cemetery, கடர், who haunt.]--Note. சாலம் is probably an adjunct and கடங்கடர், the word. 41) *
சுடலை
cuṭlai (p. 193) s. A burning ground, a place for burning dead bodies, மயானம்; [ex சுடு, burn.] (c.) சுடலையிற்பேய். Devils that haunt burning places. சுடலைகாக்க, inf. To watch the funeral pile till the body is consumed; the office of a பறையன். சுடலைக்கரை, s. A place for burning the dead. சுடலைக்காடு, s. As சுடுகாடு. சுடலைக்குருவி, s. [prov.] A bird of passage with a long tail and large crest; which is active chiefly by night. Compare சாக்குருவி. சுடலைஞானம், s. (Sometimes சுடுகாட்டு வைராக்கியம்.) Solemn but transient impressions at a cremation. சுடலைநீறு, s. Ashes from the funeral pile. சுடுகாட்டுச்சாம்பல். சுடலைமாடன், s. An imp, a horrid goblin, ஓர்பேய். சுடலையாடி, s. Siva, who dances where bodies are burnt; i. e., the Destroyer, சிவன். 2. (R.) Soap, சவக்காரம். 25)

nṭmāṭu (p. 268) கிறேன், நடமாடினேன், வேன், நடமாட, v. n. To go about, move about as after sickness. imprisonment; to be at large, to frequent as people, ஊடாட. 2. Time as a god. சத்தப்பிரமம், s. Sound deified. See கலைஞானம். பிரமகத்தி--பிரமக்கொலை--பிரமத்தி-பிர மாத்தி, s. Murder of a brahman, பிராமணக் கொலை. 2. The guilt of brahmanicide as attaching to the soul and haunting the murderer. See under அத்தி. பிரமகத்திதோஷம்-பிரமகத்தியாதோஷம், s. Guilt of brahmanicide. பிரமகத்திதொலையல், v. noun. Terminating of the guilt of brahmanicide. பிரமகபாலம், s. The skull of the upper of fifth head of Brahma, plucked off by Siva, in the form of Bhairava, for pride; and worn by Siva as a part of his garland, or carried in his hand when begging, பிரமன்றலைஓடு. பிரமகற்பம், s. The age of Brahma. See கற்பம். பிரமகன்னிகை, s. A female of the Brahman caste, பிராமணப்பெண். 2. Sarasvati, சரஸ்வதி. பிரமகாதகன், s. Murderer of a brahman, பிராமணக்கொலைபாதகன். பிரமகாயத்திரி, s. The sacred incantation repeated by the brahmans, in their daily worship. See under காயத்திரி. பிரமகிரந்தி, s. Tying together, two stems of sacrificial grass in representation of the sexual union of Siva and Sakti, in the pujah or worship of the கிரி யைக்காரன், ஓர்முடிச்சு; [ex கிரந்தி, knot.] பிரமகுலம், s. The Brahman caste. பிரமகைவர்த்தம், s. One of the eighteen Puranas, in which the sun is regarded as the Supreme Being. See புராணம். (சது.) --The description in the Sans. Dict. is different. பிரமக்கியானம், s. As பிரமஞானம். பிரமக்கியானி, s. See பிரமஞானி. பிரமசடங்கம், s. Touching six members of the body, while repeating the five lettered incantation appropriated to the five faces of Siva, as representing the five operative dcities, ஆறங்கத்தோடு செய்யுஞ்செபம். பிரமசரியம்--பிரமசாரித்துவம், s. The order, condition or religious practice of the Brahmachari or religious unmarried student, நான்கு நிலையினொன்று. பிரமசரியமனுட்டிக்க, inf. To commence the practice of a religious student, commonly about the sixteenth year. பிரமசாபாலம், s. One of the thirty-two Upanishads, உபநிடதமுப்பத்திரண்டினொன்று. பிரமசாரி, s. The religious bachelorstudent, the first of the four orders prescribed for the brahmanical tribe. See ஆச்சிரமம். 2. Bishma, a son of king சந்தனு. பிரமசாரிசந்நியாசி, s. One who passes from the student to the ascetic or fourth order, without passing through the intermediate stages, பிரமசரியத்தினின்றுஞ்சன் னியாசியாச்சிரமத்திற்புகுந்தோன். பிரமசித்தி, s. Success, in acquiring a knowledge of the deity. பிரமசூத்திரம், s. A thread or cord consisting of three threads worn by brahmans, புரிநூல். 2. The name of a treatise, ஓர்நூல். பிரமசைதன்னியம், s. The original or first cause, God, கடவுள். பிரமஞானம், s. Experimental knowledge of the deity. 2. Regarding every thing as god. பிரமஞானி, s. One who has made great attainments in the knowledge of God, so as to become one with Him, பரமஞானி. பிரமதண்டம், s. A stick to support the chin, used by brahmans, in meditation. பிரமதண்டு, s. A stick used by devotees or yogis, யோகதண்டம். 2. See பிரமம், giddiness. பிரமதத்துவம், s. True knowledge of the Supreme deity, மெய்ஞ்ஞானம். பிரமதாயம், s. What is allowed to brahmans, or held free by them. பிரமதானம்--பிரமஸ்தானம், s. The inmost recess in a temple where the chief idol is placed, as கர்ப்பக்கிரகம். பிரமதேவன், s. The god Brahma, the Creator or Evolver of worlds. பிரமத்துவம், s. The divine nature, கட வுட்டன்மை. பிரமநிருவாணம், s. Union with the deity, கடவுளுடனொன்றுகை. பிரமபதம்--பிரமபதவி, s. The world of Brahma, an inferior state of bliss. பிரமபுத்திரம், s. The river, Brahmaputra, ஓர்நதி. பிரமபுத்திரி, s. The Sarasvati river, சரஸ்வதியாறு. 2. The goddess Sarasvati, சரஸ்வதி. பிரமபுரம், s. Seehali, a town in Southern India on the northern bank of the Cavery, சீகாழி. பிரமபுராணம், s. Puranas which teach that Brahma is the chief deity. In the celebrated eighteen there are two of this class. the பிரமம், and the பதுமம். (சது.) பிரமப்பிரளயம், s. The deluge at the end of the life of Brahma, பிரமனாயுள்முடி வில்வரும்பிரளயம். பிரமமணம், s. One of the eight modes of marriage. See மணம். பிரமமுனி--பிரமரிஷி, s. A Rishi of the Brahman caste, as most of them are. பிரமமூலி, s. A medicinal plant. See பிரமி. பிரமயாகம், s. One of the five யாகம், எச்சமைந்தினொன்று. பிரமயோனி, s. The birth, origin, or extraction of a brahman, பிராமணப்பிறப்பு. பிரமரட்சு, s. A savage man of a monstrous size, பருத்தமுருடன். பிரமரந்திரம், s. The tender part of the crown of the head where the bone is not formed in infancy, and through which it is said the soul of a yogi departs when he chooses to die, உச்சித்துவாரம். பிரமராட்சதன், s. A goblin or savage animated by the soul of a brahman, who in a former birth died with unexpiated sin. பிரமராட்சதி-பிரமராட்சதை, s. The ghost of a brahmani who having died a violent death appears in the form of a demon, inhabiting trees and possessing all the knowledge previously obtained, பார்ப் பாரப்பெண்பேய். பிரமலிபி, s. The writing of Brahma in the forehead of all persons before birth; fate, destiny. See தலைஎழுத்து. பிரமலிபிதப்பாது. The writing of Brahma will not fail. பிரமலோகம், s. The world and heaven of Brahma, being the seventh and highest of the seven upper worlds, also called சத்தியலோகம். (சது.) பிரமவமிசம், s. Lineage in succession from Brahma. 2. The race of brahmans, பிராமணசாதி. பிரமவாதம், s. The religious tenets of the Vedas considered systematically, வேதமதம். பிரமவித்து, s. One of the four grades of those who pursue a true and perfect knowledge of the deity, நால்வகைமுத்தரி லொருவன். பிரமவிந்து--பிரமபிந்து. s. The seed, or progeny of a brahman, &c., பிராமணவிந்து. 2. One of the thirty-two Upanishads. See உபநிடதம். பிரமனாள், s. The fourth lunar asterism, உரோகிணி. (சது.) பிரமன்--பிரமா, s. Brahma of the Triad, as creator, progenitor or evolver of worlds and creatures, நான்முகன். பிரமன்--பிரமா, s. Brahma of the Triad, as creator, progenitor or evolver of worlds and creatures, நான்முகன். பிரமன்றந்தை, s. Vishnu as father of Brahma, விஷ்ணு. பிரமாஞ்சலி, s. A form of worship in which the two hands are joined, and placed at the breast. பிரமாட்சரம், s. A letter which is the origin of all letters, and the prime root of all prayers and incantations, மூலவெ ழுத்து. பிரமாண்டம், s. The system of worlds, as created by Brahma, உலகம். 2. One of the eighteen Puranas, பதினெண்புரா ணத்தொன்று. 3. [fig.] That which is large, gigantic, huge, colossal, காத்திரம். (usage.) பிரமாண்டநாயகன், s. Lord of the universe, கடவுள். 2. An epithet used in praise, or compliment, சக்கரவர்த்தி. பிரமாத்திரம்--பிரமாஸ்திரம், s. A famous arrow of supernatural qualities, given by Brahma to some, who had practised extraordinary austerities. பிரமாந்தரம், s. Certain parts of the body regarded as stations of the soul, உயிர்நிலை. பிரமாயு, s. The age of Brahma, as பிர மகற்பம்; [ex ஆயு.] பிரமாயுதம், s. A number, one million, பத்திலட்சம். (சது.) பிரமாரண்ணியம், s. The name of a town called வேதாரண்ணியம். பிரமாலயம், s. The house of a brahman. பிரமானந்தம், s. Heavenly bliss, or felicity, as பரமானந்தம். பிரமோத்தரகாண்டம், s. The last section of chapter of the Brahma Purana, added by the Saivas concerning Gokarnam, பிரமபுராணத்துக்கடைக்காண்டம். பிரமோற்சவம், s. An annual grand festival at a pagoda. 3) *

puvarlōkam (p. 327) --புவலோகம், s. One of the divisions of the universe, the space between the earth and the sun, as the haunt of the Siddhas, Munis and other saintly beings. See மேலுலகு under உலகம். W. p. 622. B'HUVARLOKA. 33) *

pūtam (p. 330) s. Any of the five elements. See பஞ்சபூதம். 2. A Bhuta; a goblin, ghost or malignant spirit, employed by magicians and supposed to haunt places where the dead are burnt or buried. Companies of them attend Siva, Ganesa, &c., They are described as dwarfish, with huge pot-bellies, and very small legs, &c., கிருத்திமம். 3. A living being, life, animal power, சீவன். W. p. 623. The elements are described as two-fold: 1. சூட் சுமபூதம், the spiritual or subtle class of elements, types or radicals of the grosser. See தன்மாத்திரை. 2. ஸ்தூலபூதம், the gross or visible elements, which like the former are five: பிருதிவி, or நிலம், earth; 2. அப்பு or நீர், water; 3. தேயு or தீ, fire; 4. வாயு or காற்று, air, or wind; 5. ஆகாசம் or விசும்பு, ether. பூதம்போலே. Any thing great, monstrous, superhuman, &c. பூதகணம்--பூதசேனை, s. companies of Bhutas. பூதகரப்பன்பட்டை, s. The medicinal bark of the பீநாறி tree. பூதகலம்--பூதக்கலம், s. [prov. பூதாக்க லம்.] The giving of food by the bride to the bridegroom for the first time. See பரிமாறு. பூதகாலம், s. Past time, past tense, இறந்தகாலம். பூதகலிக்கம், s. A kind of collyrium used by magicians. See கலிக்கம். பூதக்கண்ணாடி, s. A magnifier, a microscope. பூதக்கால், s. The large leg, elephantiasis, as யானைக்கால். (Old Dic.) பூதசாரம், s. Essence of the elements, formed of or belonging to the elements, elemental, பஞ்சபூதசத்து. 2. What is composed of or belonging to the primitive or spiritual class or elements. பூதசாரசரீரம், s. Bodies composed of spiritual elements. See சூக்குமசரீரம் under சரீரத்திரயம். பூததயை, s. Benevolence to creatures, as சீவகாருண்ணியம். பூததாத்திரி, s. The earth as formed of the five elements; more etymologically as nourishing living beings, பூமி; [ex தாத் திரி.] பூததானியம், s. Sesamum, எள். பூதநாடி, s. Irregularity in the pulse of one possessed by an evil spirit, பேய் பிடித்தவர்நாடி. 2. As மரணநாடி. பூதநாதன்--பூதபதி, s. Siva, as lord of the Bhutas, சிவன். பூதநாயகி, s. Parvati, பார்வதி. பூதபஞ்சாட்சரம், s. A five lettered incantation. பூதபரிணாமம், s. Modifications or changes of the elements. See பரிணாமம். பூதபரிணாமதேகம், s. Bodies formed of the gross elements. See பரிணாமசரீரம் under சரீரத்திரயம். பூதபலி--பூதயாகம், s. One of the five kinds of sacrifices. See யாகம். பூதபிரேதபிசாசு, s. Three classes of vampires. பூதபேதயோனிகள், s. Varieties of the productions of elemental combination. பூதவாகனம், s. A vehicle in a temple in imitation of a Bhuta, to carry the image of Siva or any of his family. பூதவாக்கு--பூதவார்த்தை, s. Obscene talk, கெட்டசொல். (Beschi.) பூதவாதம், s. A religious belief, making the elements to be god, ஓர்சமயம். பூதவாத்துமா--பூதாத்துமா, s. Any living being, சீவாத்துமா. பூதவிருட்சம், s. The banyan tree, ஆல மரம். பூதவிருள், s. The darkness of the elements without the light of the sun, மூலவிருள். பூதாதிஅகங்காரம், s. [in the Agam.] One of the three அகங்காரம் or evil principles.
