īrm (p. 58) s. Wet, moisture, humidity, dampness, நனைவு. 2. Coolness, agreeableness, pleasantness, amenity, குளிர்ச்சி. 3. (p.) Kindness, affection, amenity of disposition, tenderness, அன்பு. 4. Grace, favor, தயவு. 5. Knowledge, wisdom, அறிவு. 6. Duty, tribute, பகுதி. 7. Nature, பண்பு. 8. (fig.) Beauty, அழகு. 9. The குங்குமம் flower. ஈரச்சீலைபோட்டுக்கழுத்த றுத்தாள். Having applied a wet cloth she cut my throat; i. e. she has behaved treacherously toward me. ஈரமிக்கசிந்தையண்ணல். (Dharma) the kindhearted sovereign. ஈரமில்லாநெஞ்சத்தார்க்கீந்தவுபகாரம். Favor bestowed on those whose heart is void of love. ஈரக்கல், s. A red stone, one of the one-hundred-and-twenty kinds of ore, குருந்தக்கல். ஈரங்கொல்லியர், s. Washermen, வண்ணார்; [ex கொல், killing; i. e. expelling moisture.] ஈரஞ்சுவற, inf. To be imbibed or absorbed--as water in the sand, or moisture in the head after bathing, &c., ஈரமுலர. ஈரநாவு, s. A slanderous tongue. ஈரநாவுக்கெலும்பில்லை. There is no bone in the tongue of a slanderer. ஈரந்துவட்டல், v. noun. Rubbing off moisture from the head and body after bathing. ஈரப்பசுமை--ஈரப்பசை, s. Moisture, dampness--as in lands, clothes, esculent roots, &c., நரம்புலராமை. ஈரப்பசையுள்ளவன், s. A benevolent man, இரக்கமுள்ளவன். 2. A prosperous man, செல்வமுடையோன். ஈரப்பலா, s. The bread-fruit tree, the wood of which is used for musical instruments, the ஆசினி, Artocarpus incisa, L. ஈரப்பற்று, s. Moisture, dampness, ஈரக்கசிவு. 2. Property, சம்பத்து. 3. Benevolence, நன்றி. ஈரமதி, s. The cool moon, குளிர்ந்த சந்திரன். (p.) ஈரவன், s. The moon, சந்திரன். (p.) ஈரவிதைப்பு, v. noun. Sowing when the land is wet, ஈரநிலத்தில்விதைக்கை. 2. [prov.] A crop from grain sown in moist land. See புழுதிவிதைப்பு. ஈரவுள்ளி--ஈருள்ளி--ஈரவெங்கா யம்--ஈரவெண்காயம், s. Onion--the two latter are formed of வெம் and வெண், pungent and white, and காயம், pungency, Allium cepa. ஈரிக்க, inf. [vul. ஈர்க்க.] To become or be made wet, moist, damp, cool, ஈரமாக. 2. To be benumbed, stiffened, or deadened by cold or disease, to grow cold. ஈரிப்பு, v. noun. Dampness, coldness, குளிர்மை. ஈரிப்புக்காண, inf. To be morbidly, cold. ஈரியநெஞ்சம், s. உடை
uṭai (p. 59) கிறது, ந்தது, யும், ய, v. n. To become broken--as a vessel; to crack, burst, break in pieces, split, to be fractured--as the skull, &c.; to break with force suddenly, to break or burst open--as a bank or shore; to break open--as a letter or seal, &c.; to be broken--as the skin; to be hurt--as by a wound, தகர. 2. To become broken--as the ranks of an army, to be discomfited, to retreat before the foe, இரிய. 3. To become broken--as the heart with grief, to be disheartened, dispirited, dejected, alienated, &c., to be in despair, மனம்நெகிழ. 4. To fall below in competition, rivalry or comparison, தாழ. 5. To be reduced in circumstances, to become poor, குறைய. 6. To effloresce, open, burst--as a flower, to blossom, மலர. 7. To become untwisted, முறுக்கவிழ. 8. Clothes, garments, vesture, dress, வஸ்திரம். உடைநடைபாவனை, s. The mode of dress, the gait, the manner, external appearance. உடையல், s. Any thing broken, a breach, a fracture. உடையல்நெரியல், s. Things cracked and broken. உடைவாள், s. A short scimiter, an accoutrement or article of equipage, சுரிகை. உடைவு, v. noun. A breach, disruption, eruption, infraction, crack, fracture, தகர்வு. 2. Being routed, a discomfiture, defeat, இரிவு. 3. Debility, brokenness of constitution, தளர்வு. 4. உடைமை
uṭaimai (p. 59) s. Property, possessing, having, owning, உரிமை. 2. The thing possessed, property, possessions, movable property, உரியவை. 3. Jewels, ornaments, ஆபரணம். 4. Wealth, riches, opulence, செ ல்வம். In the first meaning it is often in classical language affixed to other words. உடைமையுளின்மைவிருந்தோம்பலோம்பாமடமை... Poor in the midst of wealth are they who ignorantly neglect the duties of hospitality. (குறள்.) கல்வியுடைமைபொருளுடைமையென்றிரண்டுசெல் வமுஞ்செல்வமெனப்படும். The two possessions, viz.: knowledge and wealth are possessions indeed. (நீதிநெ.) உடைமைக்காரன்--உடைமையாள ன், s. A proprietor, possessor, an owner. 2. An opulent person. அன்புடைமை, s. kci (p. 85) கிறது, ந்தது, யும, ய, v. n. To grow moist, to ooze out--as moisture from a wall; to spread or extend--as humidity round a well, &c., ஈரமூற. 2. To perspire--as the hands and feet, வெயர்க்க. 3. To grow tender-minded, become compassionate, to relent, இரங்க. 4. To become soft, to melt--as jaggary, salt, &c., with damp, உப்புமுதலியனகசிய. 5. To weep, அழ. மனங்கசிகிறது. To become tender in mind, to be kind, affectionate, &c. மனங்கசிந்தழுகிறது. To weep bitterly. தலையிலெண்ணெய்கசிகிறது. The head is greasy with oil. நீர்கசிகிறநிலம். Marshy land in which moisture abounds. ஓட்டில்நீர்கசிகிறது. The moisture oozes from the tiles. கசிகசிப்பு, v. noun. Being wet or cold, &c., to the sense of touch, கசிவு. கசிவு, v. noun. Dampness, greasiness, moisture--as of land, sugar, salt, furniture, &c., ஈரம். 2. Tenderness, sensibility, softness, அன்பு. 3. Secretion, perspiration on the surface of the body, வெயர்வை. 4. kaṭiṉam (p. 87) s. Hardness, compactness, firmness, induration, வன்மை. 2. Severity, cruelty, harshness, rigorousness, asperity, கடுமை. 3. Difficulty, roughness, ruggedness, வருத்தம். Wils. p. 182. KADINA. வெயில்மிகக்கடினம். The sun is very hot. அவன்பிழைக்கிறதுகடினம். It will be hard for him to recover. கடினக்காரன், s. A severe, hard man. கடினச்செய்தி, s. Heavy tidings. கடினப்பட, inf. To grow hard, difficult, obdurate, to indurate, வன்மைப் பட. கடினப்படுத்த, inf. [caus.] To harden the heart, &c., to indurate, வன்மைப் படுத்த. கடினப்பட்டமனம்--கடினமனம், s. A hard or unfeeling mind, obduracy. கடினமாய்ப்பேச, inf. To speak harshly, roughly. கடினமானநிலம், s. A hard soil. கடினமானபாடம், s. A hard lesson. மனக்கடினம், s. Hard-heartedness, cruelty. 68) *

kṭumai (p. 88) s. Severity, harshness, cruelty, hard-heartedness, அகோரம். 2. Rigor, strictness, asperity, rigidness, earnestness, zealousness, கண்டிப்பு. 3. Vehemence, impetuosity, forcibleness, furiousness, மூர்க்கம். 4. Rapidity, speed, haste, velocity, விரைவு. 5. Hardness, tenacity, firmness, roughness, ruggedness, கடினம். 6. Excessiveness, intensity, immoderateness, vastness, exorbitancy, flagrancy, atrocity, malignity, heinousness, desperateness, மி குதி. 7. Ferocity, savageness, furiousness, violence, கோபம். 8. Strength, powerfulness, வன்மை. 9. Cutting in language, offensiveness, satiricalness, injuriousness, குரூரம். The leading character of this word in its different meanings is intensity. (See கொடுமை.) From this word id derived the symbolic verb கடிது. (3d person sing.) It is severe, &c., with any of the meanings of கடுமை. கடிசு, v. noun. Being too perpendicular, too little bent-- as a hoe, adze, &c., to the handle, or a plough-share to the shaft, நிமிர்வு--opp. to தணிசு. கடிச்சை, s. Niggardliness, உலோ பகுணம். கடிச்சைக்காரன், s. A niggard, a penurious man. கடியது, the neuter appellative.) That which is severe. கடியமோசம், s. Imminent danger. கடியவார்த்தை, s. Hard or angry words, offensive terms or language. கடியன், s. A severe, cruel man. கடுங்கணாளர், s. Cruel, savage, barbarous persons, கொடியோர். கடுங்கண், s. Cruelty, severity, barbarousness, unmercifulness, கொடுமை. 2. [prov.] The scallop of a palmyra leaf in a கோலுபட்டை, cut too closely, ஒலைக்கண். கடுங்கருத்து, s. Abstruse idea, farfetched unnatural meaning, கடமையானக ருத்து. கடுங்காய், s. [prov.] Unripe fruit, பழாதகாய். கடுங்காய்நுங்கு, s. Palmyra fruit, the kernel or pulp of which is too far advanced to be eatable, முதிர்ந்தநுங்கு. கடுங்காய்ச்சல், s. Violent fever, மிகுசுரம். 2. v. noun. Being over-heated-as by the smith, அதிககாய்ச்சல். 3. Being dried or scorched much in the sun, வெ யிலிலதிகமாய்க்காய்தல். கடுங்காய்ச்சலாக்காய்ந்துபோயிற்று. (The corn, &c.), is all scorched (not irrecoverably) by the sun and want of water, rain, &c. கடுங்காரநீர், s. An egg, முட்டை. கடுங்காரம், s. A powerful caustic, ஓர்வகையெரிமருந்து. 2. Excessive pungency, அதிகவுறைப்பு. கடுங்காலம், s. A hard season as in drought, scarcity, &c., a season of adversity, பஞ்சகாலம். 2. A hot season, hot weather, வெப்பமானகாலம். கடுங்காற்று, s. A strong breeze, a furious wind, a tempest, அதிககாற்று. கடுங்கூர்மை, s. Being sharp, அ திககூர்மை. 2. Salt from sesamum, கடுந்தி லாலவணம். 3. Salt of sulphur, கந்தகவுப்பு. 4. Sea salt, கடலுப்பு. கடுங்கூர்மைலவணம், s. Salt from urine, அமரியுப்பு. கடுங்கோடை, s. A severe drought, முதிர்வேனில். கடுங்கோபம், s. Violent anger. கடுஞ்சினப்பூமி--கடுந்தழற்பூமி, s. Alkaline earth, lixivium, உழமண். கடுஞ்சினேகம், s. Very close friendship, too great intimacy, அதிகசினேகம். கடுஞ்சினேகங்கண்ணுக்குப்பகை. Too great intimacy is productive of evil. கடுஞ்சுண்ணத்தி, s. Alum, சீனக் காரம். கடுஞ்சூடு, s. Great heat, அதிகசூடு. கடுஞ்செட்டு, s. Unfair traffic, trading at an exorbitant profit. கடுஞ்செய்கை, s. A cruel or wicked deed, கொடியகிரியை. கடுஞ்சொல், s. A severe word, a harsh expression, a reprimand, கொடுஞ் சொல். கடுதலைமுடிச்சு, s. [prov. prop. க டைதலைமுடிச்சு.] A treacherous contrivance, perfidy. கடுநடை, s. A tiresome walk, hard walking, a hard walk. கடுநெருப்பு, s. A fierce fire, a fire too large or too powerful for the occasion--as for culinary or chemical purposes. கடுந்தரை, s. Hard soil, வன்னிலம். கடுந்தோயல்--கடுந்தோய்ச்சல், v. noun. Over-tempering a weapon, &c., முதிர்ந்ததோயல். கடுமத்தியானம்--கடும்பகல், s. The intense heat of mid-day. கடுமுள், s. Weapons of warfare, யுத்தாயுதப்பொது. கடுமூர்க்கம், s. Great fury, vehement anger, அதிகமூர்க்கம். கடுமூர்க்கன், s. A furious man. கடும்பச்சை, s. A curious green stone, நாகப்பச்சை. கடும்பத்தி, s. Rigorous devotion, earnest excessive zeal, மிகுபத்தி. கடும்பத்தியம், s. A strict diet, கண் டிப்பானபத்தியம். கடும்புலி, s. A ferocious tiger, கொடும்புலி. கடும்புளிப்பு, s. Excessive sourness, அதிகபுளிப்பு. கடுவட்டி, s. Excessive interest, usury, அதிகவட்டி. கடுவழி, s. A rugged way, கடுமை யானவழி. கடுவிலை, s. An exorbitant price, அதிகவிலை. கடுவெயில், s. A burning sun, அதி கவெயில். கடுவெளி, s. A dry extensive plain or open space, free from trees, &c., a vast expanse, பெருவெளி. 2)

kṇ (p. 89) s. The eye, விழி. 2. A hollow mark or spot, குழி. 3. A roundish hole, orifice, crevice, cavity, aperture, துவாரம். 4. A knot or point in a tree, கணு. 5. (p.) A bamboo, மூங்கில். 6. Place, location, situation, இடம். 7. A form of the locative case--that employed in grammatical examples, &c., ஏழனுருபு. 8. Kindness, benignity, graciousness, protection, கண்ணோட் டம். 9. Greatness, பெருமை. கண்கண்டதுகைசெய்யும். What the eye has seen the hand may do; i. e. we learn by observation. கண்காணநடந்தசெய்தி. Any event that happened before one's eyes. கண்ணிலேகாணப்படாது. I hate the very sight of him. 2. Even the sight of it is injurious; i. e. prejudicial--spoken where mutual animosity exists--as in the kite and snake, &c. 3. (p.) It will not appear to the eye. கண்ணிலேகுத்துகிறதோ. Does it hurt your eyes? why do you envy me, &c. கண்ணுக்கின்பமானபொருள். That which is delectable to the eye. கண்ணுக்குக்கண்ணானவன். One as precious or dear as the eye. கண்ணுக்குப்புண்ணுமல்லக்காண்பார்க்குநோயுமல் ல. There is no wound to be seen, nor any visible symptoms of disease; the sickness, if real, is internal. கண்ணுக்குள்ளேநிற்கின்றது. It is fixed in my eyes, imagination, &c.-- as a departed friend, a thing lost, &c. இராசாவுக்குக்கண்மந்திரி. A counsellor is the eye of the king. அண்டைவீட்டுச்சண்டைகண்ணுக்குக்குளிர்ச்சி.... I suffer from his eye, his evil eye is upon me, he envies me. கட்கட்டி, s. [prov.] As கண்கட்டி. கட்செவி, s. A snake--its eyes being considered the organs of hearing as well as of sight, பாம்பு. (p.) கட்புலன், s. The sense of sight, நேத்திரேந்திரியம். ஓர்கட்பறை, s. A tambourine. கண்கடை, s. [in combination.] Corner of the eye. கண்கடைதெரியாதவன், s. One elated and blind through prosperity. கண்கடைதெரியாமற்பரிமாறுகிறான். He acts in disrespect of superiors through elation, &c. 2. He acts with recklessness, wantonness, waste of property, &c. கண்கட்ட, inf. To blind the eyes by magic. 2. To cover the eyes, to blindfold. கண்கட்டி, s. A sty on the eye. கண்கட்டு, s. Blind-folding, blindman's-buff. கண்கட்டுகாசம், s. A species of cataract. கண்கட்டுவித்தை, s. The art of legerdemain or blinding by magic, ஓர் காருடவித்தை. 2. The tricks played by conjurers, தந்திரவித்தை. கண்கலங்க, inf. To weep--as the eyes from dust, a trifling hurt. 2. To be distressed. கண்கழுவ, inf. [prov.] To pour water on plants, growing corn, &c., especially the first time. கண்கழுவுதண்ணீர், s. [prov.] Water conducted in channels for watering young plants, newly sown seed, &c. கண்காசம், s. A disease of the eye, cataract. கண்காட்சி, s. Vision, sight, பார் வை. 2. A gratifying or pleasant sight, a pageant, spectacle, show, கண்ணுக்குச்சிற ப்பு. 3. A prodigy, அதிசயம். 4. [ironically.] A disgusting ungainly sight, துக் கக்காட்சி. கண்காணம், s. Oversight, inspection, watch, மேல்விசாரிப்பு. கண்காணக்காரன்--கண்காணச்சே வகன், s. A watchman. கண்காணஞ்செலுத்த--கண்காணம் பண்ண, inf. To superintend, watch. கண்காணம்வைக்க, inf. To appoint an inspector, to set a watch. கண்காணி, s. An inspector, an overseer, a supervisor, an agent, மேல்வி சாரிப்புக்காரன். 2. One who looks after the subordinates in a government office, சிரே ஷ்டாதிகாரி. 3. [In Christ. usage.] A bishop, அத்தியட்சர். கண்காணிக்க, inf. To oversee, supervise, superintend, மேல்விசாரணைசெய் ய. கண்காணிப்பு, v. noun. Oversight, supervision. கண்காந்தல், v. noun. The hot sensation of the eyes caused by neglecting to bathe, by disease, &c., கண் ணெரிவு. கண்காரர், s. Persons who sit before a conjurer, looking at the magical paint without winking, and to whom the discoveries are made, அஞ்ச னம்பார்ப்போர். கண்குத்திபாம்பு, s. A bright green snake that is said to strike at the eye, the eye-snake; a whip-snake. கண்குவளை, s. The socket of the eye, கட்குழி. கண்குழிதல், v. noun. Sinking of the eyes by disease, emaciation, &c. கண்குளிரப்பார்க்க, inf. To refresh the eyes by viewing a pleasing object--as a dear child, &c., to feast the eyes. கண்குளிர்ச்சி, v. noun. Refreshing, gratifying, pleasing to the sight. கண்குறிப்பு, s. A significant expression of the eye, கண்சமிக்கை. கண்கூச, inf. To see obscurely from the eyes being dazzled. 2. To be weak-sighted, tender-eyed. கண்கூடு, s. Socket of the eye, கண்குவளை. 2. A thing in sight, ocular demonstration, பிரத்தியட்சம். கண்கூடாய், adv. Evidently, demonstrably. கண்கூர்மை, s. Sharpness of sight. கண்கூலி, s. A present for finding a thing lost. கண்கெட, inf. To be struck blind. 2. adv. In spite of one's own sight, to the destruction of one's own eyes, &c. கண்கெடச்செய்ய, inf. To do what one knows to be wrong--as presenting defiled food to an idol, friend, &c. கண்கெடப்பேச, inf. To falsify the evidence of one's own eyes in delivering testimony, &c. கண்கெட்டதெய்வம், s. The blind deity--a profane and familiar phrase among the vulgar used in seasons of distress. கண்கொள்ளாக்காட்சி, s. A great or wonderful object, a thing over-powering to the sight, அதிசயக்காட்சி. கண்சமிக்கை, s. A wink with the eyes. கண்சாடை, s. A winking at, taking faint notice of, &c. கண்சாய்ப்பு, s. A side-look in displeasure. 2. Connivance. 3. Partiality, favor shown by a wink, &c. கண்சாய்ப்பாய்ப்பார்க்க, inf. To look jealously, to have an evil eye. கண்சாய்ப்பாயிருக்க, inf. To overlook, be partial in judgment, to connive. கண்சிமிட்ட, inf. To make a signal with the eye. 2. To wink, to twinkle through weakness of eyes. கண்சிமிட்டு, s. A signal of the eye. கண்சுருட்ட, inf. To entice one by uncommon beauty, lustre, &c., to cantivate, to fascinate. கண்செருகல்--கண்சொருகல், v. noun. Rolling up of the eyes--as in swoons, fits, death-bed, and sometimes in sleep. கண்ணஞ்ச, inf. To fear, dread, as excited by the sight of a superior, lightning, &c. கண்ணஞ்சனம், s. Collyrium, the ointment used to blacken the eye-lashes. 2. Blue vitriol. கண்ணடைக்க, inf. To choke, stop up--as the orifice of a spring, a nipple, துவாரமடைக்க. கண்ணடைய, inf. To become choked or stopped up--as a hole, &c., தூவாரமடைபட. 2. [prov.] To cease shooting--as the head or heart of a plant, பயிரின்குருத்துக்கண்ணடைய. இடியப்பக்குழல்கண்ணடைந்துபோயிற்று. The இடியப்ப mould is stopped up. கண்ணடைந்தபால், s. Milk injured by being kept too long. கண்ணப்பன், s. One of the sixtythree devotees of Siva who scooped out his own eye and consecrated it to that deity--also called திண்ணன். கண்ணயர்ந்துபோதல், v. noun. [impr. கண்ணசந்துபொதல்.] Being heavy or drowsy. கண்ணரிப்பு, v. noun. A kind of itching disease in the eye, கண்ணில்வரு மோர்நோய். கண்ணருள், s. Favor. கண்ணழற்சி, v. noun. Giddiness, dizziness, கண்மயக்கம். கண்ணாம்பூச்சியாட, inf. To run about in play with the eyes covered, or with the eyelid doubled over. கண்ணாம்பொத்தி, s. [prop. கண் பொத்தி.] A game, children's play, hideand-seek. கண்பொத்திவிளையாட, inf. To play at hide-and-seek. கண்ணாயிரம், s. The argus of the Hindus. கண்ணாயிருக்க, inf. neñcu (p. 279) s. The mind, the heart; [in popular use.] Consciousness, thought, reason, judgment and will, மனம். 2. Conscience, மனச்சாட்சி. 3. Breast, bosom, chest, மார்பு. 4. Throat, தொண்டை. 5. (fig.) Boldness, courage, daring heroism, தைரியம். 6. Audacity, venturousness, துணிவு. (c.) மறவாதேநெஞ்சே. Forget not O my soul! எனக்குநெஞ்சைக்கரிக்கிறது.
