aḥku (p. 1) pres. கிறேன், past அஃகி னேன், fut. வேன், inf. அஃக, v. n. To diminish, shrink; be shortened as a vowel; be reduced, as wealth, &c. குறைய. 2. To become closed or compressed, as a flower, umbrella, &c. சுருங்க. 3. To be acute, refined, as knowledge, நுண்மையாக. (p.) அஃகியதனிநிலை, s. The letter ஃ shortened. அஃகியவறிவு, s. Penetration, acumen, discrimination. 7)

akattiyaṉ (p. 2) --அகஸ்தியன், s. A poet and sage celebrated in the Ramayanam, Skandam and other works of antiquity. He is regarded as the former of the Tamil language which he is said to have learned of Skanda the son of Siva. He is also the reputed author of several works, still extant, in whole or in part, in the Tamil language; such as, a Grammar, Materia Medica, a work on Astrology, Astronomy, and several essays on the unity of the divine being, as opposed to the popular system of polytheism, &c. He is regarded as the son of both Mythra and Varuna by Urvasi; is represented to be of very short stature, and to have been born in a water jar. He is famed for having compressed and swallowed the ocean, for the sake of the celestials. Other wonderful stories are also told of him, and received with undoubted credence. He is considered as the regent of the star Canopus, குறுமுனி. Wils. p. 5. AGASTYA. அகத்தியர்குழம்பு, s. A famous compound cathartic. See குழம்பு. 6)

akppāṭṭuṟuppu (p. 2) s. The twelve members of அகப்பொருள் or அகத்திணை, viz. 1. இயல்பகத்திணை. Method of defining a thing or showing its nature, quality, &c. 2. வகையகத்திணை. Amplification, or detailing at large what has been said briefly. 3. பொதுவகத்திணை. The rule for summing up or recapitulating. 4. சிறப்பகத்திணை. The rule for discriminating, or explaining the difference of things. 5. உவமவகத்திணை. The rule for illustrating a subject by metaphors, comparisons, &c. 6. புறநிலையகத்திணை. The rule for exemplifying a subject by examples. 7. எதிர்நிலையகத்திணை. The rule for elucidating a circumstance by its opposite. 8. காரண or கருவியகத்திணை. Showing the condition or quality of a thing by its orginal cause. 9. காரியவகத்திணை. Proving a thing by its effects. 1. காரகவகத்திணை. The rule for relating an action, event, &c., to which belong the following:-- 1. செய்பவன், who. 2. செய்தொழில், what. 3. கருவிகள், by what helps. 4. பயன், why. 5. இடம் or நிலம், where. 6. காலம், when. 7. திறன், in what manner or how. 11. முன்னவையகத்திணை. The rule for foretelling events from signs. 12. பின்னவையகத்திணை. The rule for foretelling the consequences of any action. (p.) 17)

akāṭi (p. 2) adv. (Hin.) Before, in advance, முன். 2. s. The rope with which a horse's fore-feet are tied, புரவிமுன்னங்காற் கயிறு. (c.) 58) *

akil (p. 3) s. A fragrant wood the smoke of which is used for perfuming the hair. Aquila, or eaglewood-Xylaloo, ஓர் மரம். (c.) அகிற்கட்டை-அகிற்குறடு, s. A block of Aquila, sandal. அகிற்கூட்டு, s. A compound of five ingredients, viz., ஏலம், an unguent, கருப் பூரம், pure camphor, எரிகாசு, spices, சந்தனம், sandal wood, and தேன், honey--used for perfuming the hair. (p.) அகிற்புகையூட்ட, inf. To fumigate the hair with the fragrant smoke of the அகில். 15) *

akkurōṇi (p. 5) --அக்கோணி-அக்கோகிணி, s. [prop. அக்கௌகிணி.] A complete army consisting of 19,35 foot, 65,61 horse, 21,87 chariots and 21,87 elephants, ஓர்படைத்தொகை; ex அட்ச, a carriage, et. உஹிணி, assemblage. Wils. p. 5. AKSHOWHINY. 2)

acuvati (p. 6) s. [vul., prop. அச்சுவினி.] The first constellation, or lunar asterism, of the Hindus; which, besides indicating both the horns in the ram's head, and by two stars the base of the greater triangle of the head, comprehends one in the left foot of Andromeda. It is depicted in the form of a horse's head, முதனாள். 45)

acuvam (p. 6) s. A horse, குதிரை. (p.) அசுவகந்தி, s. A medicinal shrub, as அமுக்கிரா, having the smell of a horse. அசுவகந்திசூரணம், s. The medicinal root of that plant. அசுவகந்திதையிலம், s. An ointment from the oil of this root. அசுவசாத்திரம், s. Horsemenship as a science, அசுவபரிட்சை. அசுவதாட்டி, s. The swiftness of a horse, குதிரையின்வேகம். அசுவத்தாமன், s. One of the seven சிரஞ்சீவியர், which see, துரோணன்மகன். (c.) அசுவபரி, s. A shrub, அலரி. (p.) அசுவபரிட்சை--அசுவபரீக்ஷை, s. One of the sixty-four கலைஞானம். The knowledge of the good or bad qualities of a horse. 2. The act of trying the animal. அசவமேதம், s. The sacrifice of a horse, as practiced by former Hindu kings, ஓர்யாகம். அசுவலட்சணம், s. The qualities and temper of a horse. 44) *

acai (p. 7) s. An-expletive, அசைநிலை. 2. Accent, இசைப்பிரிவு. 3. (c.) The cud, இரை மீட்பு. 4. (p.) Metrical syllable, செய்யுளுறுப்பா றினொன்று. There are two kinds of அசை, viz. (a.) நேரசை, when there is a single syllable, ஓரலகு. 1. When there is a long vowel, as ஆ. 2. When the vowel is short, as ழி. 3. When the short vowel is joined with a mute, as வெள். 4. When the long vowel is joined with a mute, as வேல். (b.) நிரையசை, When there is a compound syllable, ஈரலகு. 1. When two short vowels are joined, as வெறி. 2. When a short and long vowel are joined, as சுறா. 3. When two short vowels are joined with a mute, as in நிறம். 4. When a short and long vowel are joined with a mute, as விளாம். அசைச்சீர், s. A foot of one syllable, as நாள் and மலர். அசைச்சொல்--அசைநிலை, s. An expletive, அசைநிலைச்சொல். அசைபோட--அசையிட--அசை வெட்ட, inf. To chew the cud, to ruminate. அசையடி, s. One of the members of கலிப்பா. கலிப்பாவினோருறுப்பு. அசையந்தாதி, s. A poem in which the last syllable of one verse and the first of the succeeding are the same. 2)

One of the hundred and eight positions of the Yogi, in which he sits cross-legged, places his elbows on his knees and rests his cheeks on the palm of his hands, கால்மடித்து இ ரண்டு முழந்தாளினும் முழங்கையூன்றியிரண்டுள்ளங் கைகளையுங் கன்னத்திலேவைத்திருப்பது. 28) *

añcu (p. 7) கிறேன், அஞ்சினேன், வேன், அஞ்ச, v. a. [used with the dative, sometimes with the accusative.] To fear, dread, பயப்பட, as அவனுக்கஞ்சுகிறேன், I fear him; அவனையஞ்சினான். He feared him. அஞ்சல், v. noun. Fearing, dreading, பயப்படல், Also the optative, வியங் கோண்முற்று. 2. Defeat, தோல்வி. அஞ்சாப்பட்டயம், s. [prov.] A certificate from the king, formerly inscribed on metal, clearing a man from the charge of guilt and re-establishing his rights as a citizen; a writ of authority, a security against oppression or ill-treatment. 3. A passport or writ of protection in passing through a country, தத்துவபரிபாலனபத்திரம். அஞ்சாமை, neg. v. noun. Fearlessness, கலங்காமை. 44)

aṭkku (p. 7) கிறேன், அடக்கினேன், வேன், அடக்க, v. a. To subject, control, curb, bring to order--as foes, &c., compress, coerce, restrain, tame, break--as a horse--constrain, repress, cause to recede, bring one to terms, to still, compose, கீழ்ப் படுத்த. 2. To reduce, lessen, condense, abbreviate, குறைக்க. 3. To deposit, conceal, stow away, cover, inter, infold, புதைக்க. 4. To contain, hold, கொள்ள. 5. To encroach upon, seize unjustly, கவர. 6. To engross, monopolize, கைவசஞ்செய்ய. 7. To embody, incorporate, திரட்ட. அடக்கி, s. A taciturn person, one who conceals his real circumstances, ability, &c. 55)
