Transposing the lines of a verse without destroying the sense, அடிமாற்றுகை. 2. A verse so formed, ஓர்பா, as, அங்கண்மதியமரவின்வாய்ப்பட்டென்ப, பூசல்வாயாப்புலம்புமனைகலங்கி. அடிமறிமண்டிலவாசிரியப்பா, s. One of the four kinds of ஆசிரியம், the lines of which are interchangeable at pleasure, the meaning remaining the same, ஓர்வகையாசிரியப்பா. அடிமறிமாற்றுப்பொருள்கோள், s. Construction in which the lines of a stanza are interchangeable, the harmony and meaning remaining the same, or the harmony only slightly affected. See பொருள்கோள், as, சுரையாழவம்மிமிதப்பவரையனை ய, யானைக்குநீத்துமுயற்குநிலையென்ப கானகநாடன் சுனை. அடிமுகனை, s. [vul.] Beginning-as of a story, &c. அடிமுடி, s. Order, regularity, வர லாறு. 2. One of the forty-three kinds of rhyme in which the first word of a line has a meaning opposite to that of the next, செய்யுட்டொடை யிலொன்று, as, இருள்பரந்தன்னமாநீர்மருங்கின், நிலவுகுவித்தன்னவெண்மணலொருசிறை, where darkness and moonlight are opposite. அடிமோனைத்தொடை, s. One of the forty-three kinds of rhyme in which each line begins with the same letter, ஓர் வகை மோனைத்தொடை. அடியடியாக, adv. [prov.] In succession, as the descent of title, &c., தலைமுறை தலைமுறையாக. அடியந்தாதி, s. A repetition in verse. See அந்தாதி. அடியளபெடை, s. Prolonging the sounds of long vowels at the beginning of every line, தொடைவிகற்பத்தொன்று. அடியறுக்கி, s. A flat piece of wood by which the potter marks his work and cuts it from the wheel below, மட்கலமறுக்குங்கருவி. அடியனாதி, s. Time immemorial, antiquity, தொன்றுதொட்டுள்ளகாலம். அடியார், s. [sing. அடியான்--அடி யாள்.] Slaves, servants as applied to devotees in reference to their deity, and used by persons of themselves in addressing superiors, to show respect, obedience or submission, தொண்டர். அடியிட, inf. To set on foot, commence an undertaking, a law suit, &c., தொடங்க. 2. To make a beginning in braiding--as the bottom of a basket, the first end of a mat, &c., பாய்முதலியவை முடைதற்கு அடியிட. அடியுரம், s. [prov.] Ancestral property, original stock. 2. Crop of a past year reserved for the sustenance of the following. 3. Manure put on the soil round a tree, &c., எரு. 4. Strength from food, power of wealth, &c.; ex உரம், strength. அடியெடுத்துவைக்க, inf. To begin to walk as children. அடியெதுகைத்தொடை, s. One of the forty-three kinds of rhymes in which the second letters of each line are of the same class, ஓரெதுகைத்தொடை. அடியேன், s. I your slave, your humble servant. அடியோடுகெட, inf. To be destroyed utterly, extirpated. அடியோட்டி, s. A triangular instrument with spikes, which, however placed, has one spike upward to pierce the feet of men or cattle; used in war, &c., a caltrop. அடிவயிறு, s. The lower part of the belly, the abdomen, கீழ்வயிறு. அடிவரலாறு, s. Source, principle, cause, காரணம். 2. Beginning, origin, bottom of a thing, தொடக்கம். 3. Ancient lines of ancestry, வமிசவரலாறு. அடிவரலாறாகத்தெரிதல். Understanding from the first. அடிவருட, inf. To chafe, stroke, or shampoo the legs of another. அடிவாரம், s. The foot of a hill, சாரல். அடிவானம், s. Horizon, திகாந்தம். அடிவிட--அடிவிரிய--அடிவிள்ள, inf. [prov.] To be cracked as the bottom of a chatty, &c. by use, அடியுடைய. அடிவைக்க, inf. A village at the foot of a hill. சிற்றடி, s. A small or delicate foot.

ām (p. 39) s. One of the poetic expletives, சாரியை. 2. An expletive, அசைநிலை. 3. A termination of the first person plural, in verbs of both classes, தன்மைப்பன்மைவி குதி. 4. A termination of the plural of verbs embracing the first and second person, உளப்பாட்டுத்தன்மைப்பன்மைவிகுதி. 5. A contraction of ஆகும், used to denote a quotation--as பெரியவனாம், it is said 'he is great.' 6. A contraction of the future of ஆ, in the third person neuter. 7. A particle of assent, yes; it is often doubled --as ஆம் ஆம், written, ஆமாம், and contracted to ஆமா. 8. A particle of comparison, ஓர் உவமவுருபு--as அல்லாங்குழலாள், a woman whose hair is black as darkness. (p.) வந்தாம். We came. பணியுமாமென்றும் பெருமை. Greatness is always humble. நானும் நீயுஞ்சென்றாம். I and you went. ஆங்காலம், s. The season when fortune favors and all things prove successful. ஆந்தனையும்--ஆமளவும். As much as possible. ஆமாறு, s. The proper manner of doing a thing, ஆகுமுறை. (p.) ஆமானவன், s. A worthy, competent respectable person, சிறந்தவன். (c.) ஆம்படி. In the manner which is agreeable to, or sufficient for. ஆம்புத்தி, s. Good or suitable advice, discrimination, cleverness, skill. ஆம்போலே. Agreeably to, possibly, perhaps. மண்ணாங்கட்டி, s. A clod. 10)

ilingkam (p. 54) s. A sign, mark, token, symbol, அடையாளம். 2. The penis. ஆண்குறி. 3. The phallus or linga--a representation of the membra viri et mulieris used in temples as an object of worship, and regarded as deity under this emblem. It is also made of gold or silver and worn in a casket on the arm, the breast, or some other part of the body, as an amulet and as an object of veneration and worship. In both these cases it represents both sexes in conjunction, being emblematical of Siva and Sacti, or the male and female energies of the deity, சிவலிங்கம். In the Agama philosophy three lingas are mentioned; viz.: 1. Streelinga (ஸ்திரீலிங்கம்) the same as விந்து--the female linga common to male and female--including in both sexes the organs for secreting and containing the seminal fluid. 2. Purshalinga (புருட லிங்கம்) same as நாதம் (Natha) male linga, also common to both sexes, including in both sexes the genital organs for transmitting and combining the two productions essential to generation. 3. Napunchakalinga, (நபுஞ்சகம்) same as அலி, Ali or Alilinga, the neuter or rather hermaphrodite linga, being the physiological foundation of the other two, both as to their organization and functions. The image linga often bears this name; these three are distinguished by the terms அவன், அவள், அது. They are physiological and are found in such works as தத்துவக்கட்டளை, &c. There is another class of lingas called பஞ்சலிங் கம், the five lingas, popularly represented as deity under the emblems of the five elements, and worshipped in as many celebrated temples, viz.: பிருதிவிலிங்கம், earth-linga, worshipped at Canjeevara-அப்புலிங்கம், water-linga, worshipped at Tiruvanaicka--தேயுலிங்கம், fire linga, worshipped at Tiruvannamalay--வாயுலிங்கம், air-linga, worshipped at Tirukalatti-ஆகாயலிங்கம், ether-linga, worshipped at Sethumbaram. These are properly of a metaphysical or mystical character and belong to the arcana of Hinduism. The above designations are for popular use and are given from their physiological connection with the five bodies or casements of the soul, whose natural bases are the elements. earth, water, fire, air and ether, respectively. Among the initiated, the following are the terms employed, viz.: 1. ஸ்திரீலிங் கம், Streelinga--this is properly the organ entire--male and female with its functions; it is a figure (உரூபம்) the only one of the five to which form is ascribed. There is but one image, the representation of this. The சரிதை course of worship, i. e. the popular puranic course belongs to this. 2. புல்லிங்கம், this is defined to be உணர்வு; the course here is that of instruction and perception as to the action of the instrument, &c. To this belongs the கிரியை course of worship, the second great stage. 3. நபுஞ் சகலிங்கம், this is the stage of darkness, of neutrality, called the stage of darkness and doubt, and, as a course of worship, is included in the succeeding one. 4. பரமலிங் கம், this comes under the dominion of மயேச் சுரன், the concealer, and is called மறைப்பு; the course here is that of யோகம், the third great stage. 5. மகாலிங்கம், this is தெளிவு, the course of ஞானம், the last stage which exempts from births, and secures absorption in the supreme essence. Wils. p. 72. LINGA. இலிங்ககோளம், s. Glans penis. (Anat.) இலிங்கங்கட்டி--இலிங்கதாரி, s. One who wears the linga. இலிங்கசங்கமம், s. Symbols of the sexes united--probably a personification of the active energy of the deity and of matter, represented in metal. &c., or formed in the mind as objects of contemplation and worship. இலிங்கசூலை, s. A kind of venereal disease. இலிங்கபுடோல், s. The ஐவிரலி, creeper, Bryonia, L. இலிங்கபுராணம், s. One of the eighteen Puranas, புராணம்பதினெட்டிலொ ன்று. இலிங்கப்புற்று, s. A kind of venereal disease. இலிங்கரோகம், s. The venereal disease, ஆண்குறியில்வருமோர்புண். இலிங்கர்--இலிங்கிகள், s. Ascetics, Rishis who wear the Linga, சைவ தவப்பாலோர். இலிங்கி, s. An ascetic. 2. A worshipper of Siva, under the phallic emblem. 3. A hypocrite, a pretended devotee. ஸ்படிகலிங்கம், s. A linga made of quartz. பாணலிங்கம், s. A stone in the form of a linga--found in the river Nurbudda. பிரசாதலிங்கம், s. What is dedicated to Siva. பார்த்திபலிங்கம், s. Any thing assumed as an emblem of linga, and worshipped. சுயம்புலிங்கம், s. A linga supposed to be self-existent. சங்கமலிங்கம், s. A man of the Changama sect. குருலிங்கம், s. A spiritual father, a confessor. 17)

uruvu (p. 65) கிறேன், உருவினேன், வேன், உருவ, v. a. To unsheath, draw out of a case or sheath, வாள்முதலியவற்றையுருவ. 2. To draw between the finger and the thumb--as a hair, thread, straw, &c., to free it from oil, moisture, &c.; or a necklace, to remove the beads; or a tamarind twig, to remove the leaves, &c., தழைமுதலிய வுருவ. 3. To draw the hand with pressure down a limb, or any part of the body, to allay pain, inflammation, &c., also down a pole, or other cylindrical body, சுளுக்குமுதலி யவற்றிற்குஉருவ. 4. To loosen or tighten a noose, கயிற்றையுருவ. 5. To pierce through, penetrate, pass through, enter, or transfix, --as an arrow, a needle, &c., ஊடுருவ. உருவினவாளுடனேவந்தான். He came with a drawn sword. நெஞ்சிலம்புபட்டுருவிற்று. The arrow reached the heart and pierced it. மெல்லெனப்பாயுந்தண்ணீர்கல்லையுமுருவப்பாயும். Gently flowing water will wear away even a rock. அவன்மார்பையுருவிப்புறப்பட்டது. (The dart) entered his breast and passed through him. கத்தியையுருவினான். He drew his sword. கீரையையுருவிப்போடு. Strip off the potherbs or greens. ஆற்றையுருவநடக்க. To ford, or wade through a river. உருவக்குத்த, inf. To stab, pierce, transpierce, transfix. உருவத்துளைக்க, inf. To bore through, or into, as with an instrument, or as beetles and other insects. உருவத்தைக்க, inf. To stitch through. 2. To nail through, transfix. 3. To pierce, or pass through--as a thorn, a weapon, a nail, &c.; ex. ஆணியுரு வத்தைத்தது, the nail is gone through. உருவுண்டுபோக, inf. To slip off-as beads from a string, to become loose, or to slip through, or become tight as a noose. உருவுதடம், s. [prov.] A noose, சுருக்கு. உருவொளி, s. Transparency, translucency. 41)

uṟ (p. 67) க்கிறேன், ந்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To seize--as by the throat, to pinch, press hard, press matter from a boil, &c., பிதுக்க. 2. To press out pulp, juice, &c., press out wholly, பிழிய. 3. otungku (p. 82) கிறேன், ஒதுங்கினேன், வேன், ஒதுங்க, v. n. To subside, recede, retreat, retire--as for shelter, drift ashore, to a hedge or wall on one side, &c., to be put into a corner, on one side, to pass one side-ways, with marks of respect, &c., பதுங்க. 2. Place of retreat, shelter, resort, ஒதுங்குமிடம். ஒதுங்கிநடக்க, inf. To pass sideways as an act of reverence, or as one of the inferior castes. 2. To keep out of the way of an evil person, a wild beast, &c. ஒதுங்கிப்போக, inf. To get out of the way of a person. ஒதுங்கிவர, inf. To turn in. ஒதுக்கம், v. noun. [prov.] The last tender leaf of a plantain which envelopes the sheath or blossom and shoots out a little before it. கட்டைநெருப்பு, s. Coal fire. கட்டைப்புத்தி, s. Shallow wit, weak intellect, stupidity, தடிப்புத்தி. கட்டையடிக்க, inf. To pass a stick through a plucked jack-fruit to ripen it, ஆப்படிக்க. 2. The mode of using the hands in dancing which are of twenty-three kinds, viz.: 1. பதாகை, stretching all the five fingers keeping them close and straight. 2. திரிபதாகை, bending the thumb and ring-finger and stretching the rest. 3. பிறை, keeping the other four fingers close together separately from the thumb. 4. சர்ப்பசிரம், keeping the palm of the hand curved. 5. சாளையம், bending the little finger and ring-finger and stretching the rest. 6. மான்றலை, keeping the middle three fing ers down and lifting the other two up. 7. பதுமகோசரம், keeping up the palm of the hand opened having the fingers bent. 8. சிலீமுகம், keeping the tip of the forefinger at the bottom of the thumb and the tips of each of the rest at the middle of the adjoining finger. 9. முட்டி, folding all the four fingers and keeping the thumb above the middle finger. 1. சிக ரம், folding all the other fingers and keeping the thumb stretched. 11. சூசி, stretching the pointing finger and keeping the thumb curved while the others are folded. 12. கபித்தம், keeping the tips of the thumb and fore-finger close together and the other folded. 13. கடகம், keeping the tips of the thumb and forefinger together, the middle finger bent and the rest stretched. 14. சந்தங்கிஷம், keeping the tips of the thumb and pointing finger together, stretching the rest. 15. அஞ்சவாய், keeping the ringfinger and little finger separately stretched up and keeping the tips of the rest together. 16. முகிழ், keeping the tips of all the fingers together. 17. திரிலிங்கம், keeping the tips of the thumb and pointing finger together, the rest curved and the wrist a little bent. 18. மிருகசிரம், stretching up the pointing finger and the little finger and keeping the rest close together. 19. சிங்கநகம், keeping up the palm of the hand having the fingers almost folded. 2. கூர்மம், stretching up the middle finger while the others are bent down. 21. பூரணம், stretching all the five fingers straight not being close together. 22. மென்னிலை, bending the thumb and stretching up the rest. 23. முன்னதம், separating the fore-finger from the rest. கரவாளம், s.
