A poem in which the poet expresses the object or wish of his patron, having ascertained it by signs, gestures, &c., பாட்டுடைத்தலைவன்கருத் தைவிளக்குங்கவி. 2. A poet who expresses his thoughts sweetly, இனிப்பைத்தருங் கவி பாடுவோன். 3. A sweet poem, இன்பந்த ருங்கவி. இங்கிதக்காரன், s. kruku (p. 96) கிறேன், கருகினேன், வேன், கருக, v. n. To be scorched, scarred, to darken, blacken by fire or the sun, to be tanned--as the countenance; to turn brown and sickly--as growing corn, &c.; to wither from want of water, to be burnt to tinder. சிரங்குகருகிப்போயிற்று. The itch is cured (dried, &c.). கொப்புளங்கருகிப்போயிற்று. The pustule is dried up. மருந்தெண்ணெய்கருகிப்போயிற்று. The medicinal oil is burnt. பயறுகருகிப்போயிற்று. The pulse is burnt in parching. கருகுமாலை, s. The dim evening twilight, மாலைவெளிச்சம். பல்லுக்கருக, inf. To turn dark as the teeth of a person on his death-bed-an indication of approaching death. முகங்கருக, inf. To darken--as the countenance from fear, anger, &c. மனங்கருக, inf. To be displeased, to have the affection alienated. உதடுகருக, inf. To become dried --as the lip. பயிர்கருக, inf. To become sickly --as growing corn. பொரியல்கருக, inf. To be burnt-as dried food. ஈரற்கருக, inf. To be smitten with anguish, fear, shame, &c. கருகல், s. Rice, curry, &c., burnt in cooking, கரிந்தது. 2. Betel leaves, grain or other vegetation scorched and blackened by the sun, கருகிப்போனது. 3. Obscurity in language, abstruseness, மறைபொருளானது. 4. Dimness of the evening twilight, dusk, மாலைவெளிச்சம். 5. v. noun. Being partially charred, or scorched, scarred, embrowned, tanned, தீதல். கருகலானபொரியல், s. A burnt stew or fry. கருகல்வெற்றிலை, s. Betel leaves tanned by the sun. கருகற்சோறு, s. Burnt rice. கருகற்புண், s. A healed or dried sore. 123)

kātu (p. 104) s. Ear, செவி. 2. The eye of a needle, ஊசியின்காது. The pan of a gun, துப்பாக்கிக்காது. 4. The bottom of a tobacco leaf near the stem, (See சோணை.) 5. The top of an ola bond, as far as the hole through which it is filed; also the stamped part of an indenture or bond, which is nipped off, when the bond becomes null and void, உடன்படிக்கையின்காது. 6. Eye of an umbrella wire, which plays round the whale bone, குடைக்கம்பியின்காது. 7. The ear of a machine or vessel--as இராட்டினக்காது. 8. A small wedge to hold a tenon, handle or peg in its place, இறுக்கலாப்பு. காதுக்கிட்டால்முகத்துக்கழகு. Rings, &c., put in the ear are ornaments to the face. காதுங்காதும்வைத்தாற்போல். With the utmost secrecy, ear to ear, &c. எனக்குக்காதுகேளாது. I am deaf. காதடி, s. [vul. காதவடி.] The back part of the cheek, செவியடி. காதடைப்பு, v. noun. Deafness occasioned by a fall, blow, disease, &c. காதணி, s. An ear-ornament; of this there are sixteen kinds: viz., கடிப் பிணை, கம்பி, கன்னப்பூ, கன்னாவதங்கம், குணுக்கு, குண்டலம், குழை, கொட்டை, செவிமலர், தாட ங்கம், தூக்கம், தொங்கல், தோடு, மஞ்சிகை, வல் லிகை, வேடம். காதற--காதறுந்துபோக, inf. To have the perforated part of the ear cut or torn off. காதறுக்க, inf. To rend the ear by tearing off the ear-rings. 2. To cancel a bond, commonly by mutilating it. காதறுத்தகூலிகைமேலே. Tearing the ear and getting booty; i. e. doing injustice and getting money. காதறுப்பான், s. A sore that appears round the ear, காதைச்சுற்றிவரும் இரணம். காதறை, s. One whose ear has been cut off, or mutilated. 2. The cavity of the ear. காதற்றமுறி, s. A cancelled ola bond. காதார, adv. With one's own ear. காதாரக்கேட்க, inf. To hear with one's own ears. காதாரக்கேட்டசாட்சி, s. An ear-witness. காதிலேசொல்ல, inf. To whisper in the ear. காதிலேயடிபட, inf. To be uttered in one's hearing. காதிலேயோத, inf. To whisper in the ear. 2. To initiate a disciple by whispering a மந்திரம் in the ear. 3. To give private advice. காதிலேவிழ, inf. To reach the ears, to be heard. காதுகடிக்க, inf. To whisper, to buzz in the ear. காதுகுத்த, inf. To bore, perforate or pierce the ear. நீயெனக்குக்காதுகுத்துகிறாயா. Do you pierce my ear? (Do you teach me?) காதுகுளிர, inf. To be gratifying to the ear--as good news, a good voice, sweet music, &c. காதுகேளாதவன், s. A deaf man. காதுகொடுக்க, inf. To give ear, to hearken, to listen, to give attention. என்சொல்லுக்குக்காதுகொடுத்தான். He has given ear to my words. காதுக்கின்பமான, Pleasing to the ear. காதுக்குடைச்சல், s. An itching, tingling sensation in the ear. காதுக்குத்து--காதுநோய், s. Ear-ache. காதுக்குறும்பி, s. Ear-wax, cerumen. காதுச்சோணை--காதுத்தண்டு, s. The lobe of the ear. காதுதூர, inf. To close the perforation of the ear. காதுத்துவாரம்--காதுத்துளை s. A perforation or hole in the ear intended for jewels. காதுப்பூ, s. A flower-shaped ear-ornament, for females. காதுப்பூச்சி, s. [prov.] A small kind of centipede, said to be very dangerous if it get into the ear, செவிப்பாம்பு. காதுமடல், s. The gristles of the ear, காதின் இதழ். காதுமந்தம், s. Dullness of hearing, காதடைப்பு. காதுமந்தன், s. A person dull of hearing. காதுமுருத்து, s. [prov.] The hard gristles of the ear. காதுவளர்க்க, inf. To promote the proper growth of the lobe of the ear for wearing jewels. காதுவிடாய், s. Weakness or lassitude in hearing, occasioned by hunger or sickness. காதுவெட்ட--காதுநறுக்க--காதுகிள்ள, inf. [prov.] To tear or nip off the stamped part of an ola bond, or otherwise to mutilate it as an indication of its being cancelled, உடன்படிக்கையின் காத றுக்க. காதெழுச்சி, s. A sore in the ear, கா தில் வரும் ஓர்நோய். காதைநெறிக்க, inf. To prick up the ears. காதைப்பொத்த, inf. To stop the ear. காதோதி, s. A malicious whisperer. காதோலை, s. caṉṉi (p. 173) s. Affection of the brain, apoplexy, paralysis, convulsions, delirium from fever, &c., சீதநோய்; [perhaps from the Sa. Sanipata, with its suffix apocopated.] --Note. In medical works, thirteen kinds of சன்னி are described. viz.: 1. கண்டகுப் சம், nervous affections of the throat, sore throat; [ex குப்சம், crookedness.] 2. சந்தி கம், (Union.) a disease arising from improper sexual intercourse. It is of two kinds. சுகசன்னி, of a man after bathing with the use of oil for anointing, and சூத கசன்னி, of a female during menstruation. 3. தாந்திரிகம், nervous debility. 4. பகீகனநேத்தி ரகம், affection of the nerves of the eye, blindness. 5. ருக்தாகம், pains of the body attended with thirst. 6. சிஃவீகம், nervous affection of the tongue, dumbness. 7. பிர லாபம், falling sickness, epilepsy. 8. அந்த கம், convulsion preceeding death. 9. ரக்த ஷடீவி, mucus mingled with blood from the nose. 1. சித்தவிப்பிரமம், fainting fits, syncope. 11. சீதகாத்திரகம் or சீதாங்கம், congestion of blood attended with spasms and profuse perspiration; spasmodic cholera. 12. கர்நீகம், nervous deafness. 13. அபின்னி யாசம், convulsion, distortions. சன்னிகுன்மம், s. Convulsive fits. (R.) சன்னிக்கட்டி, s. [prov.] A tumor near or in the ear, காதுவீக்கம். சன்னிக்குணம், s. The stage of a disease bordering upon that of coma, apoplexy, &c., 2. Symptoms, indications, &c., of coma, &c. (c.) சன்னிநரம்பு, s. Nerves of the great toe, which being injured are sometimes inflamed so as to produce lock-jaw. சன்னிநாயகம், s. A plant--black cumin, கருஞ்சீரகம். See சீரகம். 2. A medicinal plant, தும்பைப்பூண்டு. Phlomis Indic. L. சன்னிநாயன்--சன்னிகணாயன், s. (lit. god of fits.) As சன்னிநாயகம், 2. சன்னிபாதம், s. Convulsions accompanied with fever. சன்னிபிறக்குதல், v. noun. The inducing of coma. c. அலறுசன்னி, s. Convulsions accompanied with laughter, hysterics--as கம் பீரசன்னி. இரணசன்னி--புறவீச்சுச்சன்னி, s. External convulsions. இசிவுசன்னி, s. Lock-jaw. see underஇசி. v. உள்வீச்சுச்சன்னி, s. To tell tales of; to inform or insinuate against. சாடைபண்ண, inf. To be patient or lenient in passing a sentence; inflicting a punishment, &c. 2. To make gestures. சாடைமூட்ட, inf. [prov.] To sow discord, stir up strife, &c., by insinuations, &c. (c.) சாடைமோடை, s. Formality, external show. 2. A trifling or slight result. சாடையறிய, inf. To know one's aim, object, or wishes, by his looks, and gestures. சாடையாயுப்புக்கூட்ட, inf. To add a little salt; commonly in diet. சாடையாய்ப்பேச, inf. To give an intimation, to allude to. சாடையாயெழுத, inf. To write reservedly. சாடையாய்ப்போய்விட, inf. To come to a frivolous result, to prove to be a slight or trifling matter. 2. To steal or slip away from company, &c. சாடையாய்விலக, inf. To withdraw privily or slyly. சாடையானசிவப்பு, s. A faint red. இதுமண்சாடையாயிருக்கிறது. This appears like earth. அவர்வந்தசாடையில்லை. There is no appearance of his having come. தமையனுந்தம்பியுமொருசாடை. The two brothers are much alike. 67) *
