எரி
eri (p. 73) கிறது, ந்தது, யும், எரிய, v. n. To glow, shine, give light, பிரகாசிக்க. 2. To burn, ignite; to be injured, or consumed by fire, to be scorched, to flame, அழல. 3. To burn--as a sore, or fever; to smart, to be inflamed, புண்முதலியவெரிய. 4. To be envious, jealous, to fret, be peevish, பொறா மைகொள்ள. 6. To burn as the stomach with hunger, வயிறெரிய. 7. To suffer pain --as from a heavy load on the head, &c., தலைமுதலியனவெரிய. (c.) அடுப்பெரிகிறது. The fire upon the hearth burns. மந்தமெரிந்துபோனது. The indigestion has ceased, lit. is burnt up. நட்சத்திரமெரிந்துவிழுகின்றது. A star glows and falls. நான்தின்றதெல்லாமெரிந்துபோயிற்று. The food I took has digested. 2. I am so pained by what you said that the food I have eaten seems as nothing. 3. The food I took has digested by means of enchantment, medicines, &c. வயிறெரிகின்றது. A canine appetite, எரிவயிறு. (c.) எரிகுடலன், s. One who is always craving for food, தீபனமுள்ளவன். எரிகுன்மம், s. A stomachic disease, excessive heat, head-ache, &c., ஓர்நோய். எரிகொள்ளி, s. A fire-brand, கொள்ளிக்கட்டை. எரிசினம், s. Burning anger, கடுங் கோபம். எரிநரகம், s. The burning hell, ஓர்நரகம்--in distinction from others. எரிபடுவன், s. A burning ulcer or cancer, பிளவை. எரிபந்தம், s. A burning torch, a flambeau, தீவர்த்தி. 2. A kind of burning sensation all over the system from disease, எரிச்சல். எரிபிடாரி, s. An enraged or furious demoness, எரிதுர்க்கை. 2. A peevish, or fretful person-spoken disparagingly, எரிச்சலுடையவள். எரிபுழு, s. A kind of brownish, yellow caterpillar, the sight of which on leaving home, &c., is regarded as propitious, கம்பளப்பூச்சியினோர்வகை. எரிபூச்சி, s. A flying insect which, on contact, emits moisture that causes a burning smart and a discoloring of the skin, ஓர்பூச்சி. எரிமணி, s. Sparkling jewels, bright gems, பிரகாசமுள்ளமணி. எரிமுகி, s. A tree, the milk of whose seeds is pungent and caustic, and being indelible, is used in marking, சேங் கொட்டைமரம், Semicarpus anacardium. எரியவிழிக்க, inf. To look fiercely having the eyes flaming with rage, கோ பத்தோடுபார்க்க. எரிவண்டு, s. The Mylabris or blistering beetle, ஓர்வகைவண்டு. 2. An insect which strikes against the eye-ball inducing severe smarting, கண்ணிலடிக்கும் வண்டு. எரிவந்தம், s. A burning sensation in the body, எரிபந்தம். 2. (Met.) Anger, wrath, எரிச்சல். எரிவனம், s. A burning place for the dead, சுடுகாடு. எரிவரியன், s. A snake of the viper kind. பற்றியெரிய, inf. To take fire. எரிப்பு, v. noun. Burning, ignition, எரிவு. 2. s. Envy, jealousy, peevishness, malice, rancor, பொறாமை. 3. Satiety, nausea, நெஞ்செரிப்பு. எரிப்புக்காரன்--எரிப்புள்ளவன், s. An envious, impatient, peevish, or irritable person, பொறாமையுடையவன். எரிப்பெடுக்க, inf. To be peevish, cynical, querulous, எரிப்புண்டாக. ஓரெரிப்பாயெரிக்க, inf. To keep a fire burning, to heat continually--as in preparing medicines. ஓரெரிப்பாயெரித்துப்போட்டான்... He consumed it at one burning. 2. He has utterly destroyed (the family, town, &c., by injustice, oppression, &c.). எரியல், v. noun. Burning, எரிவு. 2. [prov.] That which is burnt--as food, at the bottom of a vessel in cooking, எரிந்தது. எரிவு, v. noun. Burning, ignition, எரிகை. 2. s. Heat in the system, smarting, pungency, inflammation, உடலெரிவு 3. ஓடு
ōṭu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஓடினேன், வேன், ஓட, v. n. To run, flee, flee away, pass quickly, விரைந்துசெல்ல. 2. [used with the impers. terminations.] To grow long, extend, be long, go far, நீள. 3. To divide, split, crack, வெடிக்க. ஓடவுமாட்டான் பிடியுங்கொடான். He will neither run, nor suffer himself to be caught. அவனுக்குஎழுத்துநடையோடாது. He cannot read freely. ஊரோடுகையிலொக்கவோடு. Run when your fellow-countrymen do; i. e. do as others do. வேரோடுகிறது. The root runs (into the ground). கப்பலோடுகிறது. The ship is sailing, is under sail. ஓடவைத்தல், v. noun. Refining metals, புடம்வைத்தல். இழிவினோடொன்றிநின்றவாடகத்தையோடவைக் குமாறுபோல். As refining gold spoiled by mixture with the same metal of inferior quality. (பார.) ஓடவைத்தபொன், s. Refined gold. ஓடாணி, s. [in jewelry.] A pin or bolt passed into an ornament as a fastening, ஆபரணக்கடைப்பூட்டு. ஓடித்திரிய, inf. To run about. 2. To assume airs. 3. To take great pains, &c., to attain an object. ஓடிப்படர, inf. To run and spread as a creeper. ஓடிப்பிடிக்க, inf. To overtake in running. ஓடிப்போக, inf. To run away. ஓடியாடிப்பார்க்க, inf. To go about, to endeavor. அவன்ஒருஉத்தியோகத்திற்கோடியாடிப்பார்க்கிறா ன். He goes about in pursuit of a situation. ஓடியுறைய, inf. To congeal gradually, இறுக--chiefly used in the past. கஷாயமெல்லாமோடியுறைந்தது. The decoction is all congealed. ஓடிவர, inf. To approach at a running pace. ஓடிவிறைக்க, inf. To extend--as stiffness over the body through cold, முழுதும்விறைக்க. ஓடிவெளிக்க, inf. [prov.] To be dispelled--as clouds; to clear--as the sky, முகில்பரந்தொழிய. 2. To be discovered--as fraud, theft, &c., களவுவெளிப்பட. அவர்வஞ்சகமெல்லாமோடிவெளித்துப்போயிற்று. He has discovered the imposition, &c. மழையோடிவெளித்துப்போயிற்று. The appearance of rain is past away, the sky is become clear. ஓடுதாவடி, s. Bustle and confusion in preparing--as for a journey, &c., going abroad--as for business, &c., in a time of bustle, &c., கலக்கம். ஓடுதாவடிப்படுதல், v. noun. Being in a bustle--as in preparing for a journey, &c. ஓடுபந்தல், s. [prov.] A moveable canopy supported on cords, &c., நடைக் காவணம். ஓடுவிப்புருதி, s. A running cancer, ஓர்புண். ஓட்டம், v. noun. Running, flight, galloping, speeding, ஓடுமோட்டம். 2. Current, flowing, course, pace, drift, நீரோட் டம். 3. Defeat, rout, retreat, flight, தோல்வி. அங்கேநானெடுத்தஓட்டமிங்கேவந்தோய்ந்தது... I ran all the way hither. அவனுக்கெழுத்தோட்டமில்லை. He does not read fluently. ஓரோட்டமாய்வா. Come at once, come without halting, do not stay on the way. ஓட்டங்காட்ட, inf. சன்னி
caṉṉi (p. 173) s. Affection of the brain, apoplexy, paralysis, convulsions, delirium from fever, &c., சீதநோய்; [perhaps from the Sa. Sanipata, with its suffix apocopated.] --Note. In medical works, thirteen kinds of சன்னி are described. viz.: 1. கண்டகுப் சம், nervous affections of the throat, sore throat; [ex குப்சம், crookedness.] 2. சந்தி கம், (Union.) a disease arising from improper sexual intercourse. It is of two kinds. சுகசன்னி, of a man after bathing with the use of oil for anointing, and சூத கசன்னி, of a female during menstruation. 3. தாந்திரிகம், nervous debility. 4. பகீகனநேத்தி ரகம், affection of the nerves of the eye, blindness. 5. ருக்தாகம், pains of the body attended with thirst. 6. சிஃவீகம், nervous affection of the tongue, dumbness. 7. பிர லாபம், falling sickness, epilepsy. 8. அந்த கம், convulsion preceeding death. 9. ரக்த ஷடீவி, mucus mingled with blood from the nose. 1. சித்தவிப்பிரமம், fainting fits, syncope. 11. சீதகாத்திரகம் or சீதாங்கம், congestion of blood attended with spasms and profuse perspiration; spasmodic cholera. 12. கர்நீகம், nervous deafness. 13. அபின்னி யாசம், convulsion, distortions. சன்னிகுன்மம், s. Convulsive fits. (R.) சன்னிக்கட்டி, s. [prov.] A tumor near or in the ear, காதுவீக்கம். சன்னிக்குணம், s. The stage of a disease bordering upon that of coma, apoplexy, &c., 2. Symptoms, indications, &c., of coma, &c. (c.) சன்னிநரம்பு, s. Nerves of the great toe, which being injured are sometimes inflamed so as to produce lock-jaw. சன்னிநாயகம், s. A plant--black cumin, கருஞ்சீரகம். See சீரகம். 2. A medicinal plant, தும்பைப்பூண்டு. Phlomis Indic. L. சன்னிநாயன்--சன்னிகணாயன், s. (lit. god of fits.) As சன்னிநாயகம், 2. சன்னிபாதம், s. A morbid state of the three humors of the body resulting in paralysis, convulsions, &c.--as சன்னி. W. p. 891. SANNIPATA. சன்னிபாதசுரம், s. (also சன்னிவாதசுர ம்.) Convulsions accompanied with fever. சன்னிபிறக்குதல், v. noun. The inducing of coma. c. அலறுசன்னி, s. Convulsions accompanied with laughter, hysterics--as கம் பீரசன்னி. இரணசன்னி--புறவீச்சுச்சன்னி, s. External convulsions. இசிவுசன்னி, s. Lock-jaw. see underஇசி. v. உள்வீச்சுச்சன்னி, s. Internal convulsions; oppo. to புறவீச்சுச்சன்னி. மாந்தசன்னி, s. convulsions from indigestion, commonly in children. முகவாதசன்னி, s. Paralysis causing the distortion of the face. மூடுசன்னி, s. Apoplexy with an utter suspension of the active powers. 88) *
செரி
ceri (p. 204) க்கிறது, த்தது, க்கும், க்க, v. n. To digest--as food in the stomach; concoct, decoct, சீரணிக்க. 2. (fig.) v. a. To control passion, to swallow down anger, கோபத்தைய டக்க. (c.) தருமச்சொத்துனக்குச்செரியாது. The property given for charity cannot be appropriated (digested) by you. செரியாமை, v. noun. (neg.) Indigestion, செரியாக்குணம். செரியாக்குடல்--செரியாக்குடர், s. Imperfect or bad digestion. செரியாமற்போக, inf. To be subject to bad digestion. (c.) செரியாப்பண்டம், s. Things that cannot be easily digested. செரியாமாந்தம், s. A disease inducing indigestion. See மாந்தம். குடித்தஎண்ணெய்செரித்துவிட்டதினாற்பேதியா காது. The oil you took was digested and will not operate. 61)

caittiyam (p. 209) --சயித்தியம், s. Cold, coldness, குளிர்மை. 2. That which is cool, refreshing, குளிர்ச்சியுள்ளது. (Sa. S`āit&hmacr;ya.) (c.) சைத்தியமுறிகிறது. The cold is breaking. சைத்தியங்கொள்ள, inf. To take cold. சைத்தியம்நீங்க--சைத்தியம்வாங்க, inf. To leave--said of a cold. சைத்தியோபசாரம், s. Cooling refreshment, cordials, fanning, &c. (Rare.) சைத்தியஉடம்பு, s. A phlegmatic temperament. சைத்தியமூடுதல், v. noun. The inducing of come, or cold fits. சைத்தியகுணம், s. Rheumatic tendencies. 22) *

col (p. 212) s. Word, term, vocable, மொழி. 2. Saying, sentence, phrase, expression, passage, maxim, proverb, வாக்கியம். 3. Declaration, promise, assertion, command, assurance, உறுதிச்சொல். 4. Praise, encomium, panegyric, புகழ். 5. [in gram.] Parts of speech, பெயர்ச்சொல்முதலியன. 6. Toddy, fermented liquor--as inducing garrulity, கள். 7. Rice, paddy, நெல். 8. Fine rice, செந்நெல். 9. Ears of fine rice. நெற்கதிர். --Note. The parts of speech are four, viz.; 1. பெயர்ச்சொல், nouns and pronouns. 2. வினைச்சொல், verbs of both kinds. 3. இடைச்சொல், particles, as connectives, expletives, interjections, &c. 4. உரிச்சொல், adjectives and adverbs. Other specifications are included, as இயற்சொல். common words; திரிசொல், learned words; திசைச்சொல், provincial words, or according to the நன்னூல், words peculiar to or derived from any of the Tamil provinces around the Madura district, or form any of the Indian cognate languages; வடசொல் or வடமொழி, words of Sanscrit origin. அவனுடையபேச்சு காற்சொல்லுமரைச்சொல்லும்..... He speaks broken language; (lit.) half and quarter words. அப்படிச்சொல்லு. Say so--as a command; or as meaning--that is right. ஒருசொல்லுள்ளமனிதன்--ஒருசொல் வாசகன், s. A man steadfast to his word. சொல்லிற்பிழைதேட, inf. To detect a fault in speech. சொல்லணி--சொல்லலங்காரம், s. [in Rhetoric.] Figures founded in words, as distinguished from figures of thought. (See மடக்கு, &c.) 2. Elegance of expression. 3. Correct pronunciation. 4. Empty politeness, mere professions of kindness, உபசாரவசனம். சொல்லழுத்தம், s. Emphasis,--Note. Strictly speaking there is no increased meaning given to a word in Tamil, by a stress laid upon it; this is done by intensitive particles. சொல்லறுதி, s. Decisiveness in selling, making an offer, striking a bargain, &c. சொல்லாட, inf. To utter words, speak, talk. (p.) (குறள். chap. 82.) சொல்லாதசொல், s. Improper, indecent, uncourteous, offensive language. 2. Things improper to be told, secrets, &c. சொல்லாளி, s. One faithful to his word. 2. An eloquent person. (c.) சொல்லானந்தம், s. Unlucky or inauspicious use of a word, as portending evil to the hero of the poem. சொல்லிணக்கணம், s. [in grammar.] The chapter on words; etymology. சொல்லின்முடிவினப்பொருள்முடித்தல், v. noun. (c.) சொல்லுதவி--சொற்சகாயம்--சொற்று ணை. s. Aid by words--as recommendation. சொல்லுறுதி, s. Certainty, positive declaration, a averment, &c., as to a fact, event, &c. 2. Keeping one's word, faithfulness to one's promise. சொல்லுரிமை, s. A fine emphatic expression. சொல்லுரை, s. Explanation of a word --an adopted phrase. சொல்லேருழவர், s. (plu.) Poets, the powerful in language, புலவர். 2. King's ministers, மந்திரிகள்; (lit.) those who plough with words. சொல்வகை, s. Classification of the parts of speech. 2. Proper method of speaking, as of a teacher, barrister, &c., stating a question. சொல்வல்லபம், s. Power of language, ability of speech, eloquence. சொல்வழிகேட்க, inf. To be obedient. சொல்வளம், s. A quibble, pun, play on words. சொற்சிமிட்டு, s. [prov.] The use of a little word or particle, easily overlooked yet materially affecting the meaning. 2. Artfulness, dexterity or ingenuity in the use of words. சொற்சிறப்பு, s. Superiority of one word over another to convey the author's meaning, or to suit the connection 2. Verbosity, bombast. சொற்சுவை, s. Choice selection of words. சொற்சோர்வு, v. noun. Faltering in speech. 2. Fault or error in discourse, either inadvertently, or intentionally. சொற்பட, inf. To succeed; to increase or yield--as grain, வாய்க்க. (p.) சொற்படி, According to one's word, command, promise. சொற்பயன், s. Meaning of a word. சொற்பாடு, v. noun. (with நேர்பாடு.) Occurring, as predicted at random. சொற்பிழை, s. Verbal mistake, a slight verbal error, &c. 2. The wrong use of a word. சொற்புணர்ச்சி, v. noun. Combination of coalition of words. சொற்புணர்ச்சிஇலக்கணம், s. Syntax. சொற்புத்தி, s. Advice, admonition. சொற்பொருள், s. Meaning of words. சொற்பொருள்விரித்தல், v. noun. Employing such terms as may exactly convey the author's meaning one of the thirty-two உத்தி. சொற்றவறாமை, s. Keeping one's word. சொற்றிருத்தம், s. Correct orthography and pronanciation, distinct articulation. 2. The correction of a mistake in pronunciation. சொற்றிருந்த, inf. piṇi (p. 315) s. Disease, malady, distemper, sickness, நோய். (c.) 2. Suffering, affliction, துன்பம். 3. A fastening, binding, link, tie, கட்டு. 4. [prov.] Higher or lower row of threads in a weavers loom, as raised or lowered to admit the shuttle, நூற்படை. பிணி, 3. The three kinds of temperament; 1. வாதம், flatulency, inducing melancholy; 2.பித்தம். bile, bilious distempers; 3. சிலேட்டுமம், phlegm, a phlegmatic temper. (சது.) See சரீரக்கூறு. பிணிக்குறை, s. Attack of an evil spirit on a child, causing disease, பேயி னால்வருந்தோஷம். பிணிதெறித்தல், v. noun. The disease being remedied. See தெறி, v. பிணிப்பேய், s. [prov.] A devil which attacks children. பிணிமிதிக்க, inf. To tread the loom, as a weaver, நூற்படைமிதிக்க. பிணியன், s. As பிணியாளன். (நன்.) பிணியாளன்--பிணியாளி, s. A sickly, or diseased man. பிணியுழற்றல், v. noun. Suffering from disease. (p.) பிணியோலை, s. An ola amulet tied on a child to prevent demoniacal influence. See ஓலை. 22)

pittam (p. 315) Bile, gall, bilious humor, முப்பிணியிலொன்று W. p. 356. PITTA. 2. Aberration of the senses, bewilderment, delirium, மயக்கம். 3. A variety of dance, கூத்தின்விகற்பம்.-- Of bile are அருசிப்பித்தம், aversion to food, &c.; இரத்தபித்தம், that which causes the spitting of blood; வறட் சிப்பித்தம், dryness of humors; கரும்பித்தம், black bile. பித்தஉபரி, s. As பித்தாதிகாரம்; used in the south. பித்தகாங்கை--பித்தகாரகம்--பித்தச்சூடு, s. Heat caused by bile. பித்தகாசம், s. A kind of bilious disease, causing great irritation. See காசம். பித்தகாமாலை, s. Jaundice from excess of bile. பித்தகாலம், s. The middle stage of life, when the bilious humor is supposed to be predominant from the age of 33 1/3 to 66 2/3. 2. The second and third of the twelve hours, both by day and night. பித்தகுணம், s. Delirium, slight derangement. பித்தகுன்மம், s. Dispepsia, disease in the stomach from excess of bile. See குன்மம். பித்தக்காய்ச்சல், s. As பித்தசுரம். பித்தக்கிராணி--பித்தகிராணி, s. A looseness of the bowels. See under கிரணி. பித்தக்கிறுகிறுப்பு--பித்தகிறுகிறுப்பு. v. noun. Giddiness in the head, from bilious affections. பித்தக்கொதி, s. [prov.] Feverish state of the system from derangement of the bilious humor. பித்தசரீரம், s. An emaciated body from excess of bile, a bilious temperament. See சரீரம். பித்தசிலேட்டுமம்--பித்தசிலேற்பனம், s. A temperament of body in which bilious and phlegmatic humors prevail. பித்தசுரம், s. Bilious fever. பித்தசூலை, s. Arthritic diseases from bilious humors. See சூலை. பித்தசோகை, s. A bilious heat, Leucophlegmatis, a kind of jaundice. பித்தச்சுழற்சி, s. As பித்தக்கிறுகிறுப்பு. பித்தச்சூடு, s. As பித்தகாங்கை. பித்ததிகாரம்--பித்தாதிகாரம்-பித்தாதிக் கம், s. Preponderance of bile in the system, பித்தஅதிகரிப்பு. பித்தத்தின்வீடு, s. The stomach. (R.) பித்தநாடி, s. The bilious pulse, as felt by the middle finger. See நாடி. பித்தநீர், s. Bilious humor. பித்தபாண்டு--பித்தபாண்டுரு, s. A sallow kind of jaundice, inducing great languor. பித்தமயக்கம், s. Delirium. 2. Giddiness, dizziness. பித்தமிறக்க, inf. [intrans. பித்தமிறங்க.] To reduce bile in the system. See இறக்கு. பித்தமெடுக்க, inf. To cast up bile. பித்தம்பிடித்தவன், appel. n. A deranged person, as பித்தன். பித்தரோகம், s. Bilious disease. பித்தவாயு, s. Wind in the body from heat. பித்தவெடிப்பு, v. noun. A chapping of the hands and feet. பித்தவெறி, s. Intoxication, phrensy. பித்தன், s. [fem. பித்தி, pl. பித்தர், பித்தர்கள்.] a crazy man, a mad man, an idiot. See திரவியம். 2. Siva, as eating intoxicating drugs and dancing with devils, சிவன். 3. Bhairava, வயிரவன். 4.
