ēẕu (p. 79) . Seven, septuple, seven fold, ஓரெண்.--Note. Seven is considered a special or sacred number. As a prefix it is often எழு or ஏழ். எழுகடல்--ஏழ்கடல், s. The seven oceans. எழுநிலைக்கோபுரம், s. A tower seven stories high. எழுநிலைமாடம், s. A palace seven stories high, lit. with seven door frames one above another. எழுபிறப்பு--ஏழ்பவம்--ஏழ்பிறப் பு, s. He is represented as a short man with an elephant's head and large belly, வினாயகன். Wils. p. 278. GAN'ESHA. விவாககணம்--வதுவைக்கணம், s. The correspondence between the constellations under which the bride and bridegroom were born. It is of three kinds, viz.: 1. தேவகணம், when both the bride and bridegroom are born under the following seven constellations, அச்சு வினி, அத்தம், அனுடம், இரேவதி, சோதி, புநர்பூசம் and மிருகசீரிடம். The union of such is regarded auspicious. 2. மனிதகணம், when they are born under the following eleven constellations, உத்திரம், உரோகணி, உத்திரட்டா தி, உத்திராடம், திருவாதிரை, திருவோணம், பரணி, பூசம், பூரட்டாதி, பூரம் and பூராடம். Or even if the former be of the first class, and the latter of the second, or vice versa, it is thought indifferent. 3. இராக்கதகணம், when they are born under the following constellations, அவிட்டம், ஆயிலியம், கார்த்தி கை, கேட்டை, சதயம், சித்திரை, மகம், மூலம், and விசாகம், it is thought indifferent; but should the first be of either of the former class and the second of the last class, or vice versa, it is thought inauspicious. இக்கணம், s. This instant, now. அட்டகணம்--அஷ்டகணம், s. [in poetry.] The eight kinds of ominous feet with which the invocation of the poem may begin, viz.: (1) நிலம் (ground), நிலக் கணம், a foot consisting of three நிரை; (which see)--as கருவிளங்கனி. (2) நீர் (water), நீர்க்கணம், a foot consisting of one நேர் and two நிரை--as கூவிளங்கனி. (3) மதி (moon), சந்திரகணம், a foot consisting of one நிரை, and two நேர்; (which see)--as புளிமாங்காய். (4) இயமானன் (life, soul), இந் திரகணம், a foot consisting of three நேர்-as தேமாங்காய். A poem in which the invocation commences with any of the above four கணம், is believed by Tamulians to bring good luck to the hero of the poem. (5) சூரியன் (sun), சூரியகணம், a foot consisting of one நேர், one நிரை and one நேர்--as கூவிளங்காய்; this foreshows that the hero of the poem will soon become a coward. (6) தீ (fire), தீக் கணம், a foot consisting of one நிரை, one நேர் and one நிரை--as புளிமாங்கனி; this portends a loss of health. (7) வாயு (air), மாருதகணம், a foot consisting of two நேர் and one நிரை--as தேமாங்கனி; this foretells the loss of wealth. (8) ஆகாயம் (sky, expanse), அந்தரகணம், a foot consisting of two நிரை and one நேர்--as கருவிளங்காய்; this portends shortness of life. The last four கணம், are on the whole considered to be inauspicious. See சீர். பதினெண்கணம், s. The eighteen classes of dependent supernals, viz.: 1. அமரர், immortals, the inhabitants of Swerga. 2. சித்தர், a kind of gods. 3. அசுரர், demons. 4. தைத்தியர், another kind of demons. 5. கருடர், another kind of gods. 6. கின்னரர், celestial musicians. 7. நிருதர், a kind of demons. 8. கிம்புரு டர், a kind of celestial musicians who possess a human face and the body of a bird. 9. காந்தருவர், heavenly choristers. 1. இயக்கர், demigods who minister to gods, attendants particularly on குபே ரன். 11. விஞ்சையர், heavenly magicians. 12. பூதர், ghosts, familiar spirits. 13. பிசாசர், devils. 14. அந்தரர், wanderers. 15. முனிவர், sages, hermits, learned men. 16. உரகர், serpents. 17. ஆகாயவாசிகள், those who dwell in the air. 18. போக பூமியர், those who by the practice of virtue in this world have attained a residence in that of the particular principal deity whom they worshipped. They are ever blooming and young; their time of residence, however in this abode of happiness depends upon the merit they had acquired previous to their admission. நாற்கணம், s. The four classes of letters, viz.: 1. உயிர்க்கணம், vowels. 2. வன்கணம், the six hard-sounding letters. 3. மென்கணம், the six soft-sounding letters. 4. இடைக்கணம், the six middlesounding letters. கணம், s. A species of plantain, ஓர்வாழை. கல்லகம், s. A rocky mountain, மலை. கல்லக்காரம், s. Candied molasses, candy, பனங்கற்கண்டு. கல்லக்காரம்விளைய, inf. To become candied-as the molasses of sweet toddy. கல்லங்காய், s. A fruit which becomes as hard as a stone, கற்காய். கல்லடிக்க, inf. To hew or cut stone. 2. To strike the foot against a stone. கல்லடிமூலம், s. A kind of arsenic, ஓர்பாஷாணம். கல்லடைப்பு, s. Retention of urine by gravel, நீரடைக்குமோர்நோய், Calculus. கல்லளை--கல்வளை, s. A master-mason, an architect, கற்றச்சரின்தலைவன். கல்லிலேநாருரிக்க, inf. To strip fibres from a stone; i. e. to seek for what is unattainable or impossible--an absurdity. 2. A stanza, foretelling or commemorating some important event; such stanzas appear sometimes to have been engraven in stone (whence the name), a recorded prediction, அழியாதசொல். 3. [prov.] A stanza commemorative of the death of an ancestor, mentioning the day and hour of the moon when it happened, kept by the descendants to assist in determining the precise time for the annual funeral rites, புகழ்ச்சிசெய்யுள். 4. [prov.] The mane of a well-known stanza, believed to have been written during the period of a Tamil Dynasty in Ceylon, foretelling, as it is interpreted, a succession of different foreign powers, and the final restoration of native rule, in those regions. It is as follows: முன்னைக்குளக்கோட்டன்மூட்டுந்திருப்பணியைப்பின்னைப்பரங்கிபிரிப்பனே--மன்னா கேள்--பூனைக் கண்செங்கண்புகைக்கண்ணனாண்டபின்பு--மரனே வடுகாய்வரும். 'The sacred edifices which the king Koolakottan reared, the Portuguese will demolish, listen O king-after the reign of the cat-eyed, the redeyed and the smoke-eyed, O thou deereyed, the Vaduca will succeed.' There is a different version of the last line, but it does not affect the general meaning-the smoke-eyed are said to be the present dominant power. கல்வெள்ளி, s. Temperament, disposition or state of body. 2. The disposition of the body with regard to the different effects of food, &c., on different persons. சரீரக்கட்டு, v. noun. Compactness of body. Any state of the body, as corpulent, thin, &c., thus. 1. வாதசரீரம், a constitution in which flatulent humors prevail, causing bloatedness, &c. 2. பித்தசரீரம், in which the bilious humors preponderate, causing thinness, emaciation, fretfulness, heat, &c. 3. சிலேட்டுமசரீரம், in which phlegmatic humors prevail, causing pulmonary diseases, dryness, &c. சரீரங்கனத்துக்கொள்ள, inf. Belonging or relating to the body. சரீரசவுக்கியம், s. Health, sound state of the body. சரீரசுத்தி, s. Cleanliness, or purification of the body. சரீரஸ்மரணை, s. [com. சரீரசுரணை.] Sense of feeling in the body. சரீரத்திரயம், s. A three-fold enumeration of bodies, as given in the Agama. 1. தூலசரீரம், the gross body which perishes at death. 2. சூக்குமசரீரம், the subtile or ethereal body, or case and immediate organ of the soul, accompanying that through its various transmigrations. It is the embryo or seed of the respective bodies assumed to be, and is, capable of sensations in enjoyment, suffering, &c., beyond those of the grosser body. 3. காரணசரீரம், the original type or embryo of the body, as existing with the soul in its original state. See under காரணம். Another three-fold classification describes bodies as assumed by the soul with its சூக்குமம் adapted to three different states to which it is subject, namely. 1. யாதனாசரீரம், a body adapted to suffering, assigned to the soul for its abode in the infernal regions. 2. பூத னாசரீரம், a body capable of the sensual felicities of சுவர்க்கம், or the abode of Indra. 3. பரிணாமசரீரம், changeable bodies, the bodies of the present state, in which moral actions are performed. சரீரநோய், s. Pains in the body from over exertion, walking, cold, &c. சரீரபுஷ்டி, s. Corpulency. 2. A healthy, thriving state of the body. சரீரப்போக்கு--சரீரப்போங்கு, s. The state of the body; different states of constitution. சரீரமரணம், s. [in Christ. usage.] Death of the body, oppo. to ஆத்துமமரணம், spiritual death. சரீரவதை, s. Mortifying the body by austere penance. சரீரவாகு--சரீரவாக்கு, s. The temperament of the body. சரீரவுபாதி, s. Bodily pain. சரீரவுறவு, s. Consanguinity, oppo. to ஞானவுறவு. (p.) சரீராவச்சின்னவான்மா, s. The individuated soul as it exists in bodies respectively--as distinguished or detached from the universal spirit, சீவான்மா; [ex சரீரம், et அவச்சின்னம், separated.] (சது.) சரீரி, s. A sentient soul, a corporeal being--oppo. to அசரீரி, an immaterial existence. சுகசரீரம், s. A healthy constitution, in which the three humors are in equilibrium. தூலீத்தசரிரம், s. cittu (p. 183) s. Intellect, intelligence, the principle of knowledge or intellect in the deity, or human souls; spirit (as opposed to சடம் or அசித்து, matter or non-intelligence) in all its diversified forms in the various beings inhabiting the universe, whether supernal, infernal, human, brute or vegetable; all being capable of knowing and enjoying the deity, அறிவுப்பொருள். W. p. 325. CHIT. 2. (a change of சித்தி.) Illimitable and supernatural powers, obtained by abstract devotion, and exercised at pleasure; including the eight சித்தி, which see. 3. Legerdemain, sleight of hand, exhibition of supernatural appearances by means of magic, alchemy, &c., மாயாவித்தை. 4. The யாகம் sacrifice. சித்திலாதபோதுவேறுசீவனில்லையில்லையே. When there is no intelligence, there is no life. i. e. to deny intelligence [as a first cause.] is to deny that there is life. சித்தசித்து, s. To fly or pass through ether, as the சித்தர். 2. (fig.) To disappear, as a person; spoken in surprise or contempt. 3. (fig.) To carry one's self proudly, to take airs; to be supercilious. சித்துப்பொருள், s. An intelligent being, the faculty of intelligence, as in the deity or a soul--oppo. to சடப்பொருள். சித்துரூபம்--சிற்சொரூபம், s. Imbodied intelligence, a spiritual nature. 2. The deity as identified with the intellect. சித்துரூபன்--சிற்சொரூபன், s. The deity as a pure intelligence, கடவுள். சித்துவித்தை, s. As சித்து, 3. சித்துவித்தைகற்றவன்--சித்துவித்தைக் காரன், s.
