ā (p. 34) . The second vowel of the alphabet, இரண்டாமுயிரெழுத்து. 2. A contraction of the infinitive ஆக, to become--as பெண் ணாப்பிறந்தவள், one become (born) a woman. 3. s. A neat, a cow or bull, பசுப்பொது. 4. A cow, பெண்பசு. 5. A she buffalo, பெண் ணெருமை. 6. A she elk, gayal, பெண்ம ரை. 7. A contracted form of the negative gerund, எதிர்மறை வினையெச்சவிகுதி--as உண்ணா வந்தான்; for உண்ணாமல்வந்தான், he came, not having eaten. 12. A contracted form of the neg. rel. participle, எதிர்மறைப்பெயரெச்ச விகுதி--as ஓடாக்குதிரை, for ஓடாதகுதிரை, a horse that will not run. 13. A poetic form of the gerund, வினையெச்சவிகுதி--as பாராவணங்காமகிழ்ந்தான், he saw, worshipped and rejoiced;--பாராவணங்கா for பார்த்துவண ங்கி. 14. A neg. particle which may be expressed or understood before the termination of any verb except the neut. plural--as நடவாதான், he will not walk; நட வாய், you will not walk, &c. 15. A poetic contraction of ஆறு, way or manner--as, யான்வந்தவாசென்றியம்புதியேல், if you will go and give information of my arrival. 16. A poetic name of the ஆச்சாமரம். 17. One of the letters on which to exercise the voice in singing, running through the notes of the octave--a musical mode, இசையிலோசை. 18. A prefix to Sanscrit words--as, ஆகன் னம், ஆசட்சு. ஆ கெட்டேன். Ah! I am undone. ஆ கொடுப்பாய். Oh! thou wouldst give thyself--i. e. thyself and thy family--to Yama the god of death; [vul.] generally used by women. ஆதீண்டுகுற்றி--ஆவுரிஞ்சுதறி, s. A rubbing post or stone for cows, erected as a meritorious deed of charity. ஆப்பி--ஆமயம், s. Cow-dung, கோமயம். காட்டா, s. A wild cow. காரா, s. Buffalo, (lit.) a black cow or ox. 16)

uḷm (p. 67) s. [a contraction of உள்ளம்.] Mind, heart, மனம். 2. Will, purpose, intention, எண்ணம். 3. Meaning, intrinsic meanings of a passage, &c., கருத்து. உளத்தியலிடை, s. An interjection. திருவுளம், s. Divine will, or the will of persons of high dignity. 34)

ūm (p. 70) s. An interjection formed from உம் lengthened, a particle indicative of attention, assent, &c. ஊமெனல், v. noun. Denoting attention, assent, &c. கதைசொல்லுகிறேன்ஊமென்றுகேள். I will tell you a story, show that you listen by saying ஊம். அவனூமென்னவுமில்லை. He does not say a word, he does not open his lips. 12)

eṉ (p. 75) . Why, wherefore, pronominal interrogative particle, from எ, what, வினாவி னைக்குறிப்பு. 2. A particle or interjection of doubt, ஐயக்கிளவி. 3. Particle of contempt, இகழ்ச்சிக்குறிப்பு. It is the crude form of a symbolic verb of double declension expressing what kind, what manner of person, thing, &c. பிறவினியுரைப்பதென்னே. What more then is there to be said? இவன்றந்தையென்னோற்றான்கொல்லென்னுஞ்சொல். What meritorious deed did the father perform to get such a son? அவையென். What are they? 39)

ē (p. 76) . One of the seven long vowels, நெட்டுயிரிலொன்று. 2. An arrow, அம்பு. 3. A particle of emphasis, &c., இடைச்சொல். In நன்னூல், it is said to have six different uses: 1. பிரிநிலை, a distinguishing particle-as அவனேசொன்னான், it was he who said it. In some cases, it would be used for self or selves in the plural where the connection demanded it--as he himself said it. 2. வினா, interrogative: அவனேகொண் டான், was it he that bought it? 3. எண், enumeration or copulative--as சாத்தனே கொற்றனே இருவரும்வந்தார், Sattan and Kottan both came; கடலே, கரையே, மரமே, மலரே, வளையே, இவ்வைந்து, the sea, the land, the tree, the flower, the conch, these five. 4. ஈற்றசை or அசைநிலை, a terminate expletive --as மல்லலோங்கெழில்யானைமருமம்பாய்ந்தொளித்த தே, (the weapon) lodged itself in the breast of the beautiful and powerful elephant. 5. தேற்றம், certainty, confidence, appeal, emphasis--as இதுள்ளதே, this is really true; முயற்குக்கோடில்லையே, the hare has no horns. 6. இசைநிறை, a poetic expletive for completing the metre--as ஏஏ இவ ளொருத்திபேடி, she is a hermaphrodite; பேடியோவென்றாரே, he said, is she an hermaphrodite? To these the commentator adds 7. எதிர்மறை, negative as implied by the tones and inflections of the speaker rather than expressed by the particle--as அவன்வந்தானே, he came, did he? implying he did not come. Another may also be given. 8. இகழ்ச்சி, an interjection of contempt--as எஏ--வைத்தியகாரா, oh, oh, (or fie, fie), thou stupid fellow. (p.) 5) *

aiyṉ (p. 80) s. [voc. ஐயா, ஐய, ஐயனே, &c., pl. ஐயன்மார், ஐயமார்.] Father, பிதா. 2. Elder brother, மூத்தோன். 3. Guru, குரு. 4. An elder, a superior, a person of dignity, respectability, master, &c., உயர்ந்தோன். 5. A king, அரசன். 6. A teacher, preceptor, உபாத்தியாயன். 7. The god Eyanar, ஐயனார். 8. Argha, அருகன். (p.) ஐயர் is sometimes used in the nominative case for ஐயன்--as ஐயர்வந்தபின்புனக்குத்தருவேன். I will give it to you after my father, master, &c., is come. ஐயா. The vocative of ஐயன் is often used as an interjection. ஐயாபணமிரந்தாலுங்கொள்ளக்கிடையாதே... Strange indeed, though one has money, the thing is not to be bought. வாருமையா. Come, sir--a common term of salutation among persons of respectability. அரிவையைக்கோடியையா. Take a wife, sir, I beseech you--addressed by a father to his son. (ஸ்காந்.) அறைந்தாயைய. You say, sir. (பாரத.) ஐயகோ. Poetic interjection expressive of grief, alas, alas, O lord, இரக்கச் சொல். 26)

oṉṟu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஒன்றினேன், வேன், ஒன்ற. v. n. To unite, coalesce, knit or grow together--as broken parts, two trees, &c.; to become one, to join, combine, இணைய. 2. To be engaged, be intent, &c. on an object, ஒன்றுபட. 3. To agree, suit, be agreeable, பொருந்த. 4. To copulate, புணர. ஒன்றவில்லை. It is not convenient. 2. They are not fit. 3. (They) (the things or parts) are not united, not joined well, &c. தேகத்தொன்றுநோய். Disease which befalls the body. (வைராக்கிய.) ஊழொன்றியிருப்பின். If destiny favor-ஒன்றப்பார்க்க, inf. To unite severed parts--as a magician by looking at them, lit. to look them into one, பொ ருந்தப்பார்க்க. 2. To join things to see if they fit or agree--as machinery, இசைக்க. ஒன்றாதவஞ்சித்தளை, s. See தளை. ஒன்றார்--ஒன்னாதார்--ஒன்னார், s. Foes, unfriendly persons. (p.) ஒன்றுகுடி, s. A family or person living in another's house, garden, &c. See ஒட்டுக்குடி and ஒதுக்குக்குடி. ஒன்றுகூட்டு, s. Concord, harmony, living on terms of friendship, ஒரு கூட்டு. ஒன்றுகூட்டாயிருக்க, inf. To be closely united, be in harmony, &c. ஒன்றுநர், s. Friends, relations, ந ண்பர். (p.) ஓ. The eleventh vowel, ஓகாரம். 2. A particle, இடைச்சொல். It has various uses; in நன்னூல், eight different meanings are given to it. (a) ஒழியிசை, a mark of ellipsis denoting the omission of a counter-part to what is expressed--as கொள லோகொண்டான், true he has obtained his object (but he will not prosper by it). (b) வினா, interrogatives--as சாத்தனோவந்தான், is it Sattan that came? (c) சிறப்பு, speciality, particularity, &c., an interjection of surprise. This is two-fold. 1. உயர்வுசிறப் பு, relating to objects of superiority, preeminence, &c.--as ஓஒ பெரியன், heigh day! he is an illustrious person. 2. இழிவுசிறப்பு, relating to objects of inferiority, baseness, &c.--as ஓஒ கொடியன், Oh! he is a cruel wretch. (d) எதிர்மறை, negation--as யானோ செய்வேன், will I do it? implying I will not. (e) தெரிநிலை, ascertainment, clear perception, appeal to the hearer, &c.-as ஆணோஅதுவுமன்றுபெண்ணோஅதுவுமன்று, it is neither male nor female. (f) கழிவு, bereavement, an interjection of pity--as ஓஒ தமக் கோருறுதியுணராரோ, alas, alas, they have found no way of salvation. (g) அசைநிலை, expletive--as காணியவம்மினோ, come let us see. (h) பிரிநிலை, distinguishing, marking-as அவனோகொண்டான், it was he who bought it. In addition to these it also serves to express doubt--as நீனிறமுகிலோபசியசைவல மோநெடுந்திரைகொழித்ததெள்ளறலோ, is the hair of the damsel analogous to the blue clouds, to the green moss, or the black sand on the shore drifted by the billows (நைட); அதென்னவோதெரியாது, What that can be I know not.

ōkō (p. 84) . An interjection of surprise, concern, pity, regret, bravado, oh! oh! behold, அதிசயவிரக்கச்சொல். 37)

cī (p. 190) An interjection of contempt, shame, disgust, &c; fie! hush! pish! pshaw! pugh! இகழ்ச்சிக்குறிப்பு. 2. s. Pus of a boil, புண் ணின்சீழ். 3. Semen virile, விந்து. 4. adv. [vul.] No, not so, அல்ல. (c.) சீசீ--சீச்சி. Interjective particles denoting by the repetition increased abhorrence--as சிச்சீ. சீச்சீ யிங்கிருந் தென்செய்தாய் நெஞ்சமே செத்தி லாய்கெடுவாயே. Fie upon thee, O my heart! what art thou about? at this rate thou wilt perish. (வைரா.) சீபோ. Fie, be off, go away. சீயெனல், v. noun. Expressing signs of disgust. சீயென்றுசொல்ல உடம்பெடுத்தாய். Thou art born in a despicable state. சின்னவன், s. A boy, a young man. 2. A man younger than another. 3. A man of inferior character, rank, &c. சின்னம்மை--சின்னமுத்து--சின்னவை சூரி, s. The measles--as the work of the goddess Parvati. See அம்மை. சின்னமேளம், s. The மத்தளம் drum. 2. A small musical band, in distinction from பெரியமேளம். சின்னன், s. [prov. prop. சின்னது.] A little child, animal, thing, &c. சின்னாஞ்சான், s. (in seamanship.) A back-stay rope, also பளிஞ்சி, or ஆஞ்சான். சின்னாஞா, s. [prov.] See சிற்றப்பன். சின்னாத்தாள், s. As சின்னாயி. சின்னாயி, s. The mother's younger sister or the wife of the father's younger brother; also a step mother. (c.) 8)
