aṟi (p. 33) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. a. To know, understand, comprehend, recognize, be acquainted with; have a carnal knowledge of, தெரிய. (c.) புத்தியறிந்தபெண். A marriageable girl. வல்லமையறிவோம். We will find out which is the most competent, (by way of bravado.) தன்னையறியுமறிவேயறிவாகும் பின்னையறிவது பேயறி வாமே. To know one's self is knowledge, other knowledge is inferior. அறிகருவி, s. The organs of sense. அறிகுறி, s. A sign, mark, token, symbol. அறிஞன், s. A man of knowledge, especially of divine things, அறிவுடையோன். 2. A poet, புலவன். 3. A sage, முனிவன். 4. Mercury the planet, புதன். 5. Buddha, புத்தன். அறிதுயில், s. A kind of sleep or meditation, in which the person understands all that passes about him--an attribute supposed to belong to the gods and sages, especially to Vishnu. அறிதுயிலமர்ந்தமூர்த்தி, s. Vishnu, திருமால். அறிமடம், s. Indisposition to reduce to practice what is learned. 2. Inability to recall to memory, stupidity in learned persons from infatuation. 3. Feigned ignorance. அறிமுகம், s. Acquaintance with persons (and in vulgar use) with things, slight familiarity. அறியக்கொடுக்க, inf. To inform against one, indict, impeach. 2. To communicate information, instruction, &c. அறியாமை, neg. v. noun. Ignorance. அறியாவினா, s. One of the six forms of interrogation--as when one asks for information. அறியொண்ணாமை, neg. v. noun. The impossibility of knowing. அறிவினா, s. One of the six forms of interrogation; questioning in order to teach. அறிகை, v. noun. Knowing, understanding, knowledge, உணர்வு. 50)

ā (p. 34) . The second vowel of the alphabet, இரண்டாமுயிரெழுத்து. 2. A contraction of the infinitive ஆக, to become--as பெண் ணாப்பிறந்தவள், one become (born) a woman. 3. s. A neat, a cow or bull, பசுப்பொது. 4. A cow, பெண்பசு. 5. A she buffalo, பெண் ணெருமை. 6. A she elk, gayal, பெண்ம ரை. 7. An interjection of pity, regret, pain, desire, contempt, admiration, இரக்கச் சொல். 8. A particle expressive of eager desire, gaping for a thing--as, ஆவென்றுதிரிகி றான், he wanders in quest of what he can get. (See ஆவெனல்.) 9. An affix of interrogation, வினா--as விழித்தானா? is he awake? 1. The termination of the neg. neut. plural of verbs, எதிர்மறை யஃறிணைப் பன்மைவி குதி--as, அவைசெல்லா, they will not go. 11. A contracted form of the negative gerund, எதிர்மறை வினையெச்சவிகுதி--as உண்ணா வந்தான்; for உண்ணாமல்வந்தான், he came, not having eaten. 12. A contracted form of the neg. rel. participle, எதிர்மறைப்பெயரெச்ச விகுதி--as ஓடாக்குதிரை, for ஓடாதகுதிரை, a horse that will not run. 13. A poetic form of the gerund, வினையெச்சவிகுதி--as பாராவணங்காமகிழ்ந்தான், he saw, worshipped and rejoiced;--பாராவணங்கா for பார்த்துவண ங்கி. 14. A neg. particle which may be expressed or understood before the termination of any verb except the neut. plural--as நடவாதான், he will not walk; நட வாய், you will not walk, &c. 15. A poetic contraction of ஆறு, way or manner--as, யான்வந்தவாசென்றியம்புதியேல், if you will go and give information of my arrival. 16. A poetic name of the ஆச்சாமரம். 17. One of the letters on which to exercise the voice in singing, running through the notes of the octave--a musical mode, இசையிலோசை. 18. A prefix to Sanscrit words--as, ஆகன் னம், ஆசட்சு. ஆ கெட்டேன். Ah! I am undone. ஆ கொடுப்பாய். Oh! thou wouldst give thyself--i. e. thyself and thy family--to Yama the god of death; [vul.] generally used by women. ஆதீண்டுகுற்றி--ஆவுரிஞ்சுதறி, s. A rubbing post or stone for cows, erected as a meritorious deed of charity. ஆப்பி--ஆமயம், s. Cow-dung, கோமயம். காட்டா, s. A wild cow. காரா, s. Buffalo, (lit.) a black cow or ox. 16)

ār (p. 41) . Who, the interrogative pronoun common to both numbers and all persons, in the rational class, though properly the third person plural--contracted from யாவர் or யார். (c.) நீயார்? Who art thou? அவரார்? Who is he?--Note. When உம் is added to ஆர், it implies all, and with a negative, none--as யாரும், all, யாருமில்லை, no one--also when it is doubled, it is used distributively--as ஆராருக்குக் கொடுத் தான்? To whom did he give? 51)

iṭai (p. 45) s. Middle, midst, centre, நடு. 2. The middle of a body, the waist, மருங்குல். 3. As இடைச்சொல்--a particle. 4. Interval of time, &c., நடுநேரம். 5. (p.) Place, room, space, position, situation, இடம். 6. A form of the seventh or locative case, ஏழனுருபு. 7. The side of a thing, place, quarter, region, பக்கம். 8. An elephant, யானை. 9. Interim, opportunity, con venient season, season, சமயம். 1. The full moon, பௌரணை. 11. A measure of length, breadth, thickness, &c., நீட்டலளவையிலொ ன்று. 12. One of the three நாடி, or passages for the breath--that through the left nostril, the lunar nerve or vessel, திரிநாடி யிலொன்று. 13. One of the (நாடி) nerves or arteries, தசநாடியிலொன்று. (See நாடி.) 14. (misused for எடை) Weight, gravity நிறை. (See சுழிமுனை, and பிங்கலை.) நல்லாரிடைப்புக்கு. Associating with the good. இடைகலை, s. The breath of the left nostril--as சந்திரகலை. See பிங்கலை. இடைக்கட்டு, s. A girdle, sash. 2. The allowance made for the weight of a vessel before weighing any thing in it. இடைக்காடன், s. A Rishi or சித்தன்--one of the eighteen. இடைக்கிடை. Here and there, interspersed, நடுநடுவே. 2. Of like weight, even weight, equilibrium, நிறைக்குநிறை இடைக்குலநாதன், s. Vishnu as brought up by shepherds. இடைக்குறை, s. [in grammar.] A word shortened in the middle, syncope, elision; as ஓதி for ஓந்தி, camelion. (See விகாரம்.) 2. An island, blank space in a river, &c., ஆற்றிடைக்குறை. இடைக்கொள்ளை, s. Pillaging, plunder, free booty, plundering without regard to either party, நடுக்கொள்ளை. 2. (in Agastiar.) The ravages of an epidemic discase, கொள்ளைநோயான்வருமழிவு. இடைசுருங்குபறை, s. A small drum tapering in the middle, உடுக்கை. இடைசூரி, s. [prov.] Gold or silverbeads interspersed here and there between sacred or other beads, உருத்திராக்க முதலியவற்றிற்கிடையிற்கோத்திடுவது. இடைச்சனி--இடையெழுஞ்சனி, s. The eleventh lunar asterism, in which Saturn is considered very malignant. See கடையெழுஞ்சனி and முதலெழுஞ் சனி. இடைச்சன், s. The second child, இரண்டாம்பேறு. (c.) இடைச்சாதி, s. The second or middle tribe of வைசியர்--the third caste. இடைச்சேரி, s. A shepherd's village. இடைத்தட்டு, s. Getting profit indirectly by interposing between parties, &c. or by purchasing goods of one and selling them again from a distance. இடைநடு, s. The middle emphatically (a pleonasm in rhetoric.) இடைநரை, s. Hair or beard growing grey here and there. இடைநிலை, s. In verbs generally, the characteristics of tense, வினையிடைநிலை. 2. A neutral state, neutral or middle state, stagnation in business transactions, இருபுறத்திலுஞ்சாராமனிற்கை. 3. In some compound nouns, one of the component parts, பெயரிடைநிலை. இடைநிலைத்தீபகம், s. One of the beauties of poetry, விளக்கணிமூன்றிலொன்று. See தீபகம். இடைநிலைமயக்கு, s. [in orthography.] The proper combination of letters in the middle of a word, மொழியி லிரண்டெழுத்து மயங்கிநிற்கை--if the same consonant be repeated in the middle of a word, it is called, உடனிலைமெய்மயக்கு; if otherwise, it is called, வேற்றுநிலைமெய்ம யக்கு. இடைநீரினிற்க, inf. [prov.] To swim with the body erect and the water only up to the waist. இடைப்பட, inf. To interpose, happen in the interim, come in, between, among, &c., to happen, இடையிலுண்டாக. இடைப்படுதானம், s. Giving of a secondary order, bestowing through pity on the poor, the blind, மத்திமதானம். இடைப்பழம், s. Ripe fruits interspersed among the unripe. இடைப்பழம்பழுத்தல், v. noun. Ripening as fruits here and there. இடைப்பிறவரல், v. noun. Words intervening between any one word and another with which it makes sense--as between the noun and its attribute, &c., எழுவாய்முதலிய தொடரினுள் இடையிலேற்ற பிற சொல்வரல். இடைப்புழுதி, s. Land in a state for sowing, neither very moist nor very dry, காய்ந்துங்காயாதிருக்கிறபுழுதி. இடைப்புள்ளி, s. Marks scattered here and there--as in tobacco leaves, &c., fruits, &c. இடைப்பூட்டு, s. A truss, girdle, அரைப்பூட்டு. இடைப்போகம், s. An interior crop, out of season, இடையிற்புன்பயிர்விளைவு. இடைமடக்கு, s. Silencing one by vociferation, இடையிற்றடுக்கை. 2. Haughty speaking, இடக்குமடக்கானபேச்சு. 3. [in prosody.] The repetition of a word in the middle of a line with a varied meaning. See மடக்கு. இடைமுள், s. Small, new eruptions about a healing ulcer or bile, மறு முள்பாய்கை. 2. A disease, a kind of eruption, ஓர்கரப்பன். இடைமேடு, s. Rice-land of moderate height, நடுத்தரமானமேடு. இடையற, inf. To cease or terminate suddenly. இடையறாவன்பு, s. Never-ceasing love. இடையன், s. (fem. இடைச்சி.) A shepherd--as occupying a middle position. இடைப்புத்திபிடரியிலே. The shepherds have their wit in their nape; i. e. they have none. இடையன்கால்வெள்ளி, s. [prov.] The star Aldabaran in the constellation Aries, ஓர்விண்மீன். இடையாந்தரம், s. An intermediate space or time. அந்தவேலை யிடையாந்தரத்திலே கெட்டுப்போ யிற்று. The business was interrupted, spoiled in the interim. இடையாயர், s. Persons of a middling class in piety, excellence, &c. See தலை and கடை. இடையிட, inf. To intervene, be interspersed, to have intermediate spaces either of time or place, to intermit, happen intermediately, நடுவிற்றோன்ற. இடையிட்டுவந்தசெல்வம், s. Acquired wealth and prosperity, obtained during life, not derived from ancestors. இடையிட்டெதுகை, s. The எது கை or rhyming of the third letter in every other line. இடையிடை. From time to time, at intervals, intervening space. இடையிலேகொண்டுபோக, inf. To take by theft or force, to plunder fruits, furniture, &c. 2. To take off property at one's death--as persons who are not heirs. 3. To seize and carry off property from one who has stolen it--as a constable from a thief. (c.) இடையிலேவயிறுவளர்க்க, inf. To get a living at the expense of others, not reducing one's own stock. (c.) இடையினவெதுகை, s. One of the இனவெதுகை--that in which the second letter of each line is any of the medial letters. இடையீடு, s. Obstacle, impediment, frustration, விக்கினம். 2. Equivalent, equilibrium, ஈடு. இடையூறு, s. Frustration, interruption, disappointment, obstruction, hinderance, mishap, casualty, contingence, misfortune, disaster, இடர். (c.) இடையெண், s. A poem increasing and decreasing like the waves of the sea, அம்போதரங்கத்தொன்று. இடையொடுகடைமடக்கு, s. A figure in Rhetoric, repetition of a word or phrase in the middle and end of a line with different meanings, மடக்கணியி லொன்று. இடைவழக்கு, s. [prov.] A suit at law instituted by a new claimant while the previous one is going forward, கிளை வழக்கு. இடைவழக்காளி, s. An intervening party in a law-suit. இடைவழி, s. Midway. இடைவள்ளல், s. A term common to the second of the three classes of kings famed for liberality. (p.) இடைவாய், s. The degrees marked upon a steel-yard. இடைவிட, inf. To intermit, suspend, interrupt, leave intermissions, interstices, &c. இடைவிட்டுவிட்டு. Every other one. இடைவிடாமழை, s. Incessant rain. இடைவிடாமல், neg. v. part. Incessantly, constantly, without intermission. இடைவெட்டுப்பணம், s. A clipped or imperfectly stamped coin, மாறுமத் திரைவிழுந்தபணம். 2. [prov.] Profit made indirectly, பொறுக்கியெடுத்தபணம். இடைவெட்டுப்பேச்சு, s. Derision, ridicule. இடைவெளி, s. An intervening space, நடுவெளி. எட்கிடை--எள்ளிடை, s. The thickness of a rape-seed. urai (p. 65) s. Utterance, speaking, speech, பேச்சு. 2. A word, an expression, a sentence, a declaration, a saying, மொழி. 3. Explanation, interpretation, commentary, exposition, gloss, verbal renderings, &c., வியாக்கியானம். 4. Gold, பொன். 5. [in native lexicons.] The words for which synonymes of meanings are given, also the generic term of which the species are given, சொற்பயன். 6. Sound, ஒலி. 7. Eminence, உயர்ச்சி. 8. The written word, sacred writings, holy writ, as one of the three means of attaining knowledge, வேத மொழி; several kinds of உரை, or modes of explanation are given by Tamil Grammarians. The author of காரிகை has given four, viz.: 1. கருத்துரை, the main sentiment or scope of the text explained, also called தாற்பரியவுரை. 2. பதவுரை, verbal explanation, or interpretation, word by word, or clause by clause, also called கண்ணழிவுரை. 3. பொழிப்புரை, the substance of the text omitting rhetorical ornament, and adjuncts, or a free rendering of the text without interruption, also called பொழிப்புத் திரட்டுரை and பிண்டவுரை. --Note. The latter is the same as பதவுரை would be without the words of the text interspersed. 4. விரித்துரை, explanation at large, comment or exposition with proofs, illustrations, &c., also called அலகவுரை and விரியுரை; any of the preceding three, or any other kind of explanation may be included in this last. According to நன்னூல், உரை is divided into tow general classes, viz.: காண்டிகையுரை and விருத்தியுரை. 1. காண்டிகையுரை, brief exposition, or explanation of the text embracing five sub-divisions. (a) கருத்துரை, the scope of the text. (b) பதப்பொருள், verbal rendering being either as பதவுரை or as the scope and definition of பொழிப்புரை, given above, (c) உதாரணம், example for illustration. (d) வினா, anticipating objections, (lit.) proposing questions. (e) விடை, answering such objections or questions as may possibly occur. 2. விருத்தியுரை, copious or complete explanation embracing fourteen sub-divisions. 1. பாடம், giving the text or verse to be explained with different readings and choice exposition. 2. கருத்துரை, the general scope, or import of the text, as in காண்டிகை. 3. சொல்வகை, giving the parts of speech, or showing the grammatical connection when necessary to clear away obscurities. 4. சொ ற்பொருள், giving equivalent, literal words, or clauses as பதப்பொருள், in காண்டிகை, verbal renderings, &c. 5. தொகுத்துரை, a free rendering of the text as பொழிப்புரை, above. 6. உதாரணம், illustration by examples, as above. 7. வினா, anticipating objections, or raising questions as before. 8. விடை, answering such objections or giving reasons in support of the statements in the text. 9. விசேடம், special explanation, particular remarks. 1. விரிவு, supplying ellipses as of cases or otherwise. 11. அதிகாரம், determining the meaning of doubtful terms by reference to the subjects under discussion, as belonging to such a head, &c., or according to another exposition pointing out the beginning and ending of the discussion of the different subjects respectively, the opinions of different commentators. 12. துணிவு, deciding the meaning of terms concerning which there may be diversity of opinion. 13. பயன், inference, applications or recapitulation to show what is to be learnt by the text. 14. ஆசிரியவசனம், quotations, or textuary proofs from other authors. (p.) உரைகட்ட, inf. To comment on a work. உரைகாரன், s. A commentator, expositor, உரையாசிரியன். உரைக்கோள், s. The construction given by the commentator to the text, உரைகாரன்கருத்து. உரைசெய்ய, inf. To speak, declare, பேச. To make a commentary, வியாக்கியானம்பண்ண. உரைநூல், s. A work on which a commentary has been written, உரைபெற் றநூல். உரைபாடம்--உரையேடு, s. A work with its commentary. உரையாசிரியன், s. [used honorifically] A commentator, உரைகாரன். உரையாட, inf. To say, speak, tell, சொல்ல. 2. To converse, dispute, பேச. (p.) என்றுரையாடி நெடுங்கடல்வண்ணனெழுந்தருள. Having said thus, Vishnu who wears the color of the broad sea condescended to start--(பார.) உரையாயிருக்க, inf. To be in prose. உரையிலக்கணம், s. Rules for making commentaries. There are five according to சதுரகராதி, viz.: 1. பதம். 2. பதப்பொருள். 3. வாக்கியம். 4. வினா. 5. விடை. உரையிற்கோடல், v. noun. Additions to a text by a commentator--one of the உத்தி. உரையெழுத, inf. To write a commentary. உரைவன்மை, s. Eloquence, oratorical power, சாதுரியப்பேச்சு. 2. uṟukku (p. 67) கிறேன், உறுக்கினேன், வே ன், உறுக்க, v. a. To reprimand, chide, scold, reprove, rebuke, கடிந்துகொள்ள. 2. To meanace, denounce, threaten, either by words or gesture, பயமுறுத்த. 3. To speak with harshness, severity, anger, &c., குரூர மாய்ப்பேச. 4. (p.) To leap over, pass over, கடக்க. 5. To jump, குதிக்க. உறுக்கிக்கேட்க, inf. To interrogate in a threatening tone or manner. உறுக்கிச்சொல்ல, inf. To speak or declare with authority, to speak in a threatening tone. விரலாலுறுக்க, inf. To rebuke by raising or shaking the forefinger. உறுக்கல், v. noun. A jump, குதிப்பு. 2. s. Anger, கோபம். 3. Sign of anger, சினக்குறிப்பு. உறுக்கு--உறுக்காட்டம்--உறுக்கா ட்டியம், v. noun. ūṭu (p. 69) s. [as உள்.] The inside, that which is intermediate, between, நடு. (சத. 18.) 2. [vul.] Wool, thread woven across the warp, தார்நூல்.--Note. Commonly ஊடு as an affix governs the dative--as அவர்களுக்கூடேவந்தான், he came between them. இந்தஅலுவல்களுக்கூடேயிதையுமெப்படிச்செய்வே ன். How can I possibly do this in the midst of so much business? கனவூடும். Even in a dream-- (பார.) ஊடறுக்க, inf. To cut through, separate and pass through, cleave, to sunder--as an arrow; to force one's way through people, jungle, beasts, &c., உள்ளறுக்க. 2. To determine between two parties, to decide differences, settle amicably, வழக்குத்தீர்க்க. ஊடாட, inf. To go about--as a domestic in a house, அகத்திலுலாவித்திரிய. 2. To frequent, பலகாற்பயில. 3. A rock that cannot be moved by a crow-bar gives way to the roots of a tree. முட்டரோடாடியநட்புக்கருங்காலிக்கட்டையூடா டியகால். Friendship with the base is like a hard block thrown against the knee. மயிரூடாடாநட்புச்சிறிதுபொருளுடாடக்கெடும்... Friendship so close as not to admit of even a hair-like interruption may be destroyed by pecuniary dealings. ஊடாடிப்பார்க்க, inf. To search, examine, &c., to look into, ஆராய்ந்துபார்க்க. கல்வியிலூடாடிப்பார். Look into learning, learn. ஊடாட்டம், v. noun. Familiarity, intercourse, intimacy, பழகுகை. ஊடாட்டம்பண்ண, inf. To be familiar, have intercourse, with, பயிற்சி பண்ண. ஊடுசெல்ல, inf. To pass through a crowd, a jungle, &c. ஊடுதாக்க, inf. To oppose with firmness, பின்னிடாமலெதிர்நிற்க. 2. ūṉṟu (p. 72) கிறேன், ஊன்றினேன், வே ன், ஊன்ற, v. a. To plant, set, fix, place firmly, rest upon with pressure--as a pole in propelling, fixing a boat, a musket, a lever, &c., நிறுத்த. 2. To lay down premises in an argument, நியாயத்திற்குமூலத்தைஸ்தாபிக்க. 3. To grasp, hold, strike root as trees, gain a firm footing, become established in a place, இறுகப்பிடிக்க. 4. v. n. The staff which I gave him to lean upon, breaks my head; i. e. the good I have done him has turned out evil. கையூன்றிக்கரணம்போடவேண்டும். Exerting themselves in their proper calling. ஊன்றக்கட்ட, inf. To edify, ratify. ஊன்றிக்கேட்க, inf. To interrogate with much emphasis, press for an answer, உறுதியாய்வினாவ. 2. To hear attentively, கருத்தாய்ச்செவிகொடுக்க. ஊன்றிக்கொள்ள inf. To gain a firm footing in a place, office, &c.; to establish one's self, நிலைபெற. 2. To sing with proper articulation, emphasis, &c. ஊன்றிப்பார்க்க, inf. To look steadfastly, intently, &c., நோக்கிப்பார்க்க. 2. To consider a thing maturely, to fix the mind intently on the object of consideration, ஆராய்ந்துபார்க்க. 3. To feel, try--as a fruit, &c., pressing it with the hand, கையினாலழுத்திப்பார்க்க. ஊன்றிப்பிடிக்க, inf. To seize firmly, hold tight, இறுகப்பிடிக்க. 2. To mark faults severely, கூர்மையாய்க்குற்றம் பிடிக்க. 3. To hold fast an opinion, பிடி வாதமாயிருக்க. ஊன்றிப்பேச, inf. To speak emphatically or forcibly, உறுதியாய்ப்பேச. இந்தநியாயத்திலூன்றிப்பேசு. eṭu (p. 73) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To take up, lift up, raise, தூக்க. 2. To take off, take away, extract, take out, remove a stain, dirt, humor, &c., or one body from another, chemically, or otherwise combined, ஒன்றிலிருந்தெடுக்க. 3. I am unable to carry this load. அதையெடுத்துப்பேசினான். He took up the subject. யானைதும்பிக்கையினாலேபணத்தையெடுக்கும். The elephant will take up a small coin with his proboscis. ஏரியெடுத்துப்போகிறது. The water of the lake has carried away its embankment. இதினாலிலாகிரியெடுக்கும். This will cause intoxication. சோற்றிலிருக்கிறகல்லையெடுக்கமாட்டாதவன்மோக னக்கல்லைத்தாங்குவானா. Will he who cannot pick out a stone from rice be able to lift the stone architrave of a temple vestibule? i. e. he who is incapable of little matters must be incapable of great ones. விழுந்தவனையெடாமலுதைக்கலாமா. Is it proper to kick, instead of raising, a fallen man? இந்தச்சீலையையெந்தக்கடையிலெடுத்தாய். In what bazaar did you buy this cloth? புல்லெடுக்கிறதரை. Ground covered with an exuberant growth of grass. எடாதஎடுப்பு, s. Living above one's rank, circumstances, means, &c., engaging in an enterprise, beyond one's powers, &c. எடாதஎடுப்பெடுக்கலாகாது. It is improper to engage in an enterprise above one's circumstances. எடுகூலி, s. Porterage, hire for carrying burdens, சுமைக்கூலி. எடுத்தடிமடக்கு, s. Retort, turning a person's reasons or remarks against himself, confuting one by his own arguments, anticipating a person in word, or action, in order to check, or thwart him in his object; interrupting one in speaking, &c. 2. Temerity, rashness; speaking, answering, or acting rashly, துணிவு. எடுத்தடிவைக்க, inf. To begin to step--as a child, காலைப்பெயர்த்துவைக்க. எடுத்தபடி, adv. Suddenly, at once, promptly, extemporaneously. எடுத்தமொழியினெய்தவைத்தல், v. noun. An author's forming rules applicable to the examples he finds-one of the உத்தி. எடுத்தலளவையாகுபெயர், s. One of the four kinds of அளவையாகுபெயர், according to which, the weight of the article weighed is used for the scale. எடுத்தாட்சி, s. A thing much in use, வழக்கம். எடுத்தார்கைப்பிள்ளை, s. A lewd woman, குடும்பத்தைவிட்டுவெளிப்பட்டவள். எடுபட்டுப்போக, inf. To be raised --as a siege. 2. To be abolished. 3. To be defeated. அங்கிருந்தபள்ளிக்கூடம்எடுபட்டுப்போயிற்று.... Celebrity, a high style of living, notoriety in a good or bad sense, உயர்ச்சி. 2. Abolition, அழிகை. 3. Gaiety, in dress, in a woman, a lax, or lascivious disposition, மேட்டிமை. எடுப்பிக்க, inf. To cause to raise, or lift up. மனிதவதாரமெடுக்க, inf. To assume the human form, to become incarnate. வெறியெடுக்க, inf. To be intoxicated. வெறியெடுத்தவன், s. One who is intoxicated. பெயரெடுக்க, inf. To assume an appearance, a name, a character, &c.; to acquire a name, celebrity. நூலெடுக்க, inf. To disentangle thread. வாயாலெடுக்க--வாயிலெடுக்க, inf. To vomit. தொழிலெடுக்க, inf. He will not desist from his purpose. வாயெடுப்பாய்ப்பேசுகிறவன். One who talks arrogantly. ஒருவன்மேலெடுப்பெடுத்தல். Publishing the faults of another. எடுப்பாயிருக்க, inf. To be high. எடுப்பானவன், s. A haughty person, an upstart, one who lives above his rank or circumstances, மேட்டிமைக் காரன். எடுப்புச்சாய்ப்பு, Gentility, genteel and obliging behavior, united with display, pomp, grandeur, &c., உயர்வுதாழ்வு. எடுப்புண்டது, appel. n. That which is taken and carried away. எடுப்புத்தேர், s. A small portable shrine for the conveyance of an idol on men's shoulders--opp. to இழுப்புத்தேர். கல்லெடுப்பு, s. A funeral rite. எடை, v. noun. eṉ (p. 75) . Why, wherefore, pronominal interrogative particle, from எ, what, வினாவி னைக்குறிப்பு. 2. A particle or interjection of doubt, ஐயக்கிளவி. 3. Particle of contempt, இகழ்ச்சிக்குறிப்பு. It is the crude form of a symbolic verb of double declension expressing what kind, what manner of person, thing, &c. பிறவினியுரைப்பதென்னே. To spell, join letters. எழுத்துக்கூட்டாமல்வாசிக்க, inf. To read fluently. எழுத்துச்சந்தி, s. Union of letters in the combination of words, எழுத்துப்பு ணர்ச்சி. எழுத்துச்சாரியை--எழுத்தின்சாரி யை, s. Particles employed to express the names of the letters--as அ with the consonants; கரம், காரம் and கான் with the short letters and sometimes with the consonants; காரம் with the long vowels and கான் with ஐ and ஔ. In common use, ன is used with the short, and ஆன and அன்னா with the long letters. Some other forms are also given in ancient grammars and they are also occasionally used. எழுத்துச்சுருக்கம், s. A kind of play on letters by omitting one after another in regular succession, and thus changing the sense, ஓரணி. எழுத்துச்சேலை--எழுத்துப்புடவை, s. A woman's fancy dress whether printed or embroidered, சித்திரவஸ்திரம். எழுத்துத்திரிதல், v. noun. Permutation of letters--the change of one letter for another according to grammatical rules, for the purposes of euphony, மூவிகாரத்தொன்று. எழுத்துநடை, s. Easy and fluent reading. எழுத்துப்படிய, s. inf. To become trained--as the hand to writing; to have a settled hand. எழுத்துப்பதிக்க, inf. To indent in writing, பதியவெழுத. 2. To enter, write, imprint, settle an affair by writing. எழுத்துப்பதிய, inf. To be indented--as writing, engraving. 2. To be entered, written. எழுத்துப்பிழை--எழுத்துப்பிசகு, s. Error in spelling. எழுத்துப்பொருத்தம், s. The five classes into which the letters are superstitiously divided. (See தசப்பொருத்தம்.) 2. Choosing a name for a child so as to begin with one of the letters ascribed in astrology to the lunar mansion, under whose influence the child is supposed to have been born, பிறந்தநட்சத்திரத்திற்குப் பொருந்தப்பெயரிடுகை. எழுத்துமடக்கு, s. Repetition of, the same letter in a verse, ஓரணி--as நா நாநாதம்கூடிசைநாடுந்தொழிலேவாய். எழுத்துவருத்தனம், s. A kind of diversion by means of poetry, a play on letters, the meaning changing as letters are added. See மிறைக்கவி. எழுத்துவாசனை, s. The art of reading and writing, எழுத்துநடை. எழுத்துவேலை, s. Chintz-painting, சீலையின்மீதெழுதுகை. 2. Writing, transcribing, copying, எழுதுந்தொழில். எழுத்தொலி--எழுத்தோசை, s. The sound of a letter. நுணுக்கெழுத்து, s. A character or letter written unintelligibly. கிறுக்கெழுத்து, s. A letter erased, cancelled; a letter badly written. கூட்டெழுத்து, s. Double letters, letters written together in a contracted form--as 9 for க்க; ட்ட for ட்ட; ? for த்த, &c. நீர்மேலெழுத்து, s. An inscription on the water--a simile expressive of that which is evanescent. கல்மேலேழுத்து, s. An inscription on a stone expressive of that which is stable and enduring. நல்லோரொருவர்க்குச்செய்தவுபகாரங் கன்மேலெழுத்துப்போற்காணுமே--அல்லாத ஈரமிலாநெஞ்சத்தார்க்கீந்தவுபகாரம் நீர்மேலெழுத்திற்குநேர். The valued favors the deserving gain, Like sculptures in eternal rock remain; Of virtue's tribute charity is sure: But kind attentions to the worthless shown, Who debts and duties evermore disown, Like letters written in the wave endure. முதுவெழுத்து--தேறியவெழுத்து, s. Matured well-formed writing. நிலவெழுத்து, s. Letters written on sand. இளவெழுத்து, s. An immature hand not yet formed. சுட்டெழுத்து, s. A demonstrative letter. நெட்டெழுத்து, s. A long sounding letter. சார்பெழுத்து, s. Depending letters of which there are ten kinds, viz.: 1. உயிர்மெய். 2. ஆய்தம். 3. உயிரளபு. 4. ஒற்ற ளபு. 5. குற்றியலிகரம். 6. குற்றியலுகரம். 7. ஐகாரக்குறுக்கம். 8. ஔகாரக்குறுக்கம். 9. மகரக் குறுக்கம். 1. ஆய்தக்குறுக்கம். முதலெழுத்து, s. The twelve vowels and the eighteen consonants. வல்லெழுத்து, s. The six hardsounding letters--as க், ச், ட், த், ப், ற். மெல்்லெழுத்து, s. The six softsounding letters--as ங், ஞ், ண், ந், ம், ன். இடையெழுத்து, s. The six middlesounding letters, ய், ர், ல், வ், ழ், ள். வினாவெழுத்து, s. An interrogative letter. குற்றெழுத்து, s. ē (p. 76) . One of the seven long vowels, நெட்டுயிரிலொன்று. 2. An arrow, அம்பு. 3. A particle of emphasis, &c., இடைச்சொல். In நன்னூல், it is said to have six different uses: 1. பிரிநிலை, a distinguishing particle-as அவனேசொன்னான், it was he who said it. In some cases, it would be used for self or selves in the plural where the connection demanded it--as he himself said it. 2. வினா, interrogative: அவனேகொண் டான், was it he that bought it? 3. எண், enumeration or copulative--as சாத்தனே கொற்றனே இருவரும்வந்தார், Sattan and Kottan both came; கடலே, கரையே, மரமே, மலரே, வளையே, இவ்வைந்து, the sea, the land, the tree, the flower, the conch, these five. 4. ஈற்றசை or அசைநிலை, a terminate expletive --as மல்லலோங்கெழில்யானைமருமம்பாய்ந்தொளித்த தே, (the weapon) lodged itself in the breast of the beautiful and powerful elephant. 5. தேற்றம், certainty, confidence, appeal, emphasis--as இதுள்ளதே, this is really true; முயற்குக்கோடில்லையே, the hare has no horns. 6. இசைநிறை, a poetic expletive for completing the metre--as ஏஏ இவ ளொருத்திபேடி, she is a hermaphrodite; பேடியோவென்றாரே, he said, is she an hermaphrodite? To these the commentator adds 7. எதிர்மறை, negative as implied by the tones and inflections of the speaker rather than expressed by the particle--as அவன்வந்தானே, he came, did he? implying he did not come. Another may also be given. 8. இகழ்ச்சி, an interjection of contempt--as எஏ--வைத்தியகாரா, oh, oh, (or fie, fie), thou stupid fellow. (p.) 5) *

aintu (p. 80) adj. or noun. Five, ஓரெண். ஐங்கணை, s. Five flowers feigned to be the arrows of Hindu cupid. (p.) ஐங்கணைக்கிழவன், Kama, the Hindu cupid, lit. lord of the five arrows, மன்மதன். (p.) ஐங்கரன், s. Ganesa, the five-handed. He is represented with an elephant's head, the proboscis or trunk is figuratively reckoned as a hand, விநாய கன். (p.) ஐங்கரற்கிளையோன், s. A name of Skanda, முருகன். 2. Verapattra, வீரபத் திரன். (p.) ஐங்கலம், s. Sixty marcals. ஐங்காதம், s. Five leagues. ஐங்காயம், s. The five kinds of காயம். (See காயம்.) 2. Other five kinds are used in witchcraft, viz.: 1. மிளகு, pepper. 2. வெந்தயம், dill. 3. ஓமம், cardamom. 4. வெள்ளுள்ளி, garlic. 5. பெருங் காயம், assaf&oe;tida. ஐங்காயத்தூள்--ஐங்காயவுண்டை, s. Powders of five ingredients given to women after child-birth, ஓர்மருந்து. ஐங்குரவர், s. The five superiors, ஐம்பெரியோர், viz.: King, அரசன்; guru, குரு; father, பிதா; mother, மாதா and elder brother, தமயன். In some classifications, உபாத்தியாயன் is placed instead of மாதா. ஐங்குழு, s. The five confidential servants of a king, அரசர்க்குக்குழு, viz.: 1. மந்தியர், ministers. 2. புரோகிதர், priests. 3. சேனாபதியர், generals. 4. தூதர், ambassadors. 5. சாரணர், spies. ஐங்கோணம், s. A pentagon, quinquangular figure, பஞ்சகோணம். ஐஞ்ஞூறு, s. Five-hundred, ஐந் நூறு. ஐந்தரு, s. The five trees in the world of Indra, பஞ்சதாரு, viz.: 1. அரிச்சந்த னம். 2. கற்பகம். 3. சந்தானம். 4. பாரிசாதம். 5. மந்தாரம். ஐந்தருநாதன், s. Indra, lord of the five trees in the celestial world, which yield whatever is asked or desired of them, இந்திரன். (p.) ஐந்தலைநாகம், s. A fabulous fiveheaded cobra, of which each head is supposed to contain a very precious gem. It is said to be found in mountainous districts and to have the power of flying. ஐந்தவித்தல், s. The control of the senses, ஐம்பொறியடக்கல். ஐந்தவித்தானாற் றலகல்விசும்புளார்கோமானிந்திர னேசாலுங்கரி. The first post of the marriage shed when planted on the fifth day before the marriage, the third, fifth, or seventh day being chosen, as it may be lucky or otherwise, according to astrological calculation, மணப்பந்தரின் ஐந்தாங்கால். ஐந்தானம், s. The fifth lunar asterism, மிருகசீரிடம். (p.) ஐந்திணை, s. The five kinds of land, &c., ஐவகைநிலம். (See திணை.) 2. The closest friendship or love between husbands and wives, அன்புடைக்காமம். (p.) ஐந்திணைச்செய்யுள், s. A poem in which the five different kinds of soil are described and illustrated--one of the ninety-six பிரபந்தம், ஓர்பிரபந்தம். (p.) ஐந்துருவாணி, s. A shaft connecting the floors or stages of a car. See அ ஞ்சுருவாணி. ஐந்துறுப்படக்கி, s. The tortoise, ஆமை. (p.) ஐந்தொகைவினா, s. [in arithmetic.] The rule of five or double rule of three, ஓர்வகையெண்வினா. ஐந்தொழில், s. The five divine operations, பஞ்சகிருத்தியம், viz.: 1. சிருஷ்டி, creation or reproduction. 2. ஸ்திதி, preservation. 3. சங்காரம், destruction, reduction of things to their primitive elements. 4. திரோபவம், that act of the deity by which he conceals from the sentient soul its future destiny for purposes of moral discipline; concealing, obscuring; i. e. involving the soul in ignorance or illusion by means of magic. 5. அனுக்கிரகம், grace, the various means adopted for the deliverance of the soul from the power of illusion and consequent transmigrations. See கிருத்தியம். ஐமீன், s. The thirteenth lunar asterism, அத்தநாள். (p.) ஐமுகன்--ஐயானனன், s. Siva, the five-faced, சிவன். (p.) ஐமுகாஸ்திரம், s. A five-pointed arrow, பஞ்சமுகாஸ்திரம். (p.) ஐம்பது, s. Fifty. ஐம்பத்தொன்று, s. Fifty-one. ஐம்பால், s. [in grammar.] The five பால், or the genders and numbers, ஐந்து பால். 2. The five modes of dressing a woman's hair, ஐவகையாகமயிர்முடிக்கை. 3. The hair of a female, மகளிர்கூந்தல். See பால். (p.) ஐம்புலம்--ஐம்புலன், s. The five senses, பஞ்சவிஷயம். ஐம்புலத்தடங்கான், s. He who is not comprehensible by the five senses-God, கடவுள். (p.) ஐம்புலம்வென்றோர், s. Ascetics, holy persons, முனிவர். (p.) ஐம்புலனடக்கல். Subjugation of the five senses. ஐம்புலனுகர்ச்சியினிறப்பன, s. The five kinds of creatures which perish by means of the senses, viz.: 1. சுவையரல்--மீன், fish, by the taste in catching at the bait. 2. நாற்றத்தால்-வண்டு, beetles, by the smell. 3. ஊற்றினால்-யானை, elephants, by copulation. 4. ஓசையால்-அசுணம், a species of bird by harsh sounds. 5. ஒளியால்-விட்டில், a species of insect, attracted by the light. ஐம்புலன்விழையான், s. An ascetic, முனிவன். (p.) ஐம்புலாதி, s. [prov.] Anxiousness, being full of cares. ஐம்பூதம், s. The five elements, பஞ்சபூதம். ஐம்பொறி, s. The five organs of sense, பஞ்சேந்திரியம். ஐம்பொறிநுகர்ச்சி, s. [commonly ஐவேலி.] A creeping plant whose leaf is supposed to resemble the fingers, a pentadactyle, ஓர்கொடி, Bryonia laciniosa, L.-Note. In this plant the god Siva is said to have concealed himself when pursued by பஸ்மாசுரன், who had, by penance, obtained from him, as a boon, power to destroy all on whose head he should place his hand. ஐவிரல், s. Doubt, surprise, &c.--as one of the துறை, அகப்பொருட்டுறையினொன்று-as, போதோவிசும்போபுனலோபணிகளது பதியோ யா தோவறிகுவதேதுமரிது, whether the place the damsel occupies is a lotus flower, the world of the gods, water, or the world of serpents, it is difficult to determine. ஐயம்புகினுஞ் செய்வினைசெய். Though you go abegging, perform your duties. (ஔ வை.) ஐயகணசூலை, s. An arthritic disease arising from phlegm and heat, ஆறுசூலையிலொன்று. ஐயக்காட்சி, s. An object of subject exciting doubt, indistinct perception, problematical or hypothetical terms, அதுவோவிதுவோவெனக்காண்கை. (See காட்சி.) 2. Doubt, சந்தேகம். ஐயக்காரன், s. A beggar, a mendicant, பிச்சைக்காரன். ஐயக்கிளவி, s. Terms or particles of doubt or uncertainty, commonly found in interrogative expressions, ஐய மொழி--such as ஆ, ஏ, ஓ, கொல், யா, &c. ஐயநாடி, s. One of the three states of the pulse--that in which the phlegmatic humor is supposed to be prevalent in the system, சிலேட்டுமநாடி. See நாடி. ஐயப்பட, inf. To doubt, hesitate. ஐயப்படாமை, neg. v. noun. Freedom from doubt and fear, certainty, undauntedness, சந்தேகங்கொள்ளாமை. 2. One of the eight அறத்துறுப்பு. See உறுப்பு. ஐயப்பாடு, s. Doubt, uncertainty, indecision, apprehension, suspense, சந் தேகம். ஐயமறுக்க, inf. One of the five kinds of questions which are proposed to remove doubt from the mind, சந்தேக நிவர்த்திசெய்ய. ஐயமிட, inf. To give alms, பிச் சையிட. ஐயமிட்டுண். Give alms before you eat. ஐயமுற, inf. To doubt, சந்தேகம டைய. ஐயமேலிட, inf. To be in a great doubt, சந்தேகமதிகரிக்க. 2. To have the rattles in the throat--as a dying person, சிலேட்டுமமேலிட. ஐயவணி, s. A figure in rhetoric-as where doubt is entertained as to whether a thing which bears analogy to another is identical with or distinct from it--as தாதளவிவண்டுதடுமாறுந்தாமரைகொ ல் மாதர்விழியுலவும் வாண்முகங்கொல். I doubt whether it is the face of a woman or a lotus flower, since it resembles so much the latter. ஐயவதிசயம், s. A figure in rhetoric, ஓரலங்காரம். ஐயவிலக்கு, s. A figure in rhetoric, ஓரலங்காரம். ஐயவும்மை, s. A particle showing uncertainty, doubt. See உம். ஐயவுவமை, s. A figure in rhetoric, ஓரலங்காரம். ஐயுற, inf. To doubt, hesitate, to be undecided, to suspect, to be in suspense, சந்தேகமடைய. சக்கரஞ்சுற்றுகின்றமைகண்டையுற்று. Wondering at the sight of the whirling discus. பக்கத்தார்யாரையுமையுறுதல்.
