ōtu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஓதினேன், வேன், ஓத, v. a. To recite the vedas with appropriate intonations, aspirations, &c.--being one of the six duties of the brahman; to chant a sacred eulogy in the temple, வேத மோத. 2. To read, learn, recite audibly in order to commit to memory, படிக்க. 3. To speak, say, declare, சொல்ல. 4. To repeat prayers--as the Romanists and Mohomedans, செபமுச்சரிக்க. 5. To give advice, persuade clandestinely, to teach one to act with duplicity, புத்திசொல்ல. 6. To utter incantations, to consecrate, மந்திரமுரைக்க. ஓதாதார்க்கில்லையுணர்வுடனொழுக்கம். Knowledge and good manners are not to be found in unlearned men. ஓதாமலொருநாளுமிருக்கவேண்டாம். Employ your whole time in the pursuit of knowledge. ஓதுவதொழியேல். Cease not to learn. (ஔ வை.) எண்ணெயோதிக்கொடுக்கிறது. To administer holy oil to women in labor. காதிலேயோதிவிட்டான். He has given him secret advice, he has prevailed on him by underhand or secret means. நூறுநாளோதியாறுநாள்விடத்தீரும். The traces of learning made in a hundred days will be effaced by indolence in six. ஓதியிறைக்க, inf. To sprinkle holy water. ஓதியுடைக்க, inf. To break a cocoanut with appropriate incantations. ஓதிவிட, inf. To cease reading. ஓதினநீர், s. Holy water, consecrated water. ஓதுவான், s. A teacher of the vedas, and other sacred literature, ஆசா ன். 2. A learner, a scholar, a student, படிப்பவன். 3. The eulogist of the god of the temple whose duty it is to chant the verses directed by the attending priest, திருப்பாட்டுப்பாடுவோன். ஓதுவானெல்லாமுழுவான்றலைக்கடையில். The scholar must wait at the backdoor of the ploughman; i. e. learning is dependent on the plough. ஓதுவிக்க, inf. To teach the vedas, வேதங்கற்பிக்க. 2. To teach science, instruct, படிப்பிக்க. ஓதல், v. noun. Reciting the vedas, &c. 2. Reading. 3. Learning, speaking. ஓதலினன்றேவேதியர்க்கொழுக்கம். Good manners in a brahman are preferable to the recitation of the vedas. ஓதற்றொழிலுரித்துயர்ந்தோர்மூவர்க்கும். A well-adjusted composition. கம்பீரவீரன், s. A bold hero, a spirited manly person. இரணகம்பீரம், s. Warlike bravery, military address. கம்பீரிக்க, inf. toḷi (p. 263) s. (St. துவனி.) Sound, noise, intonation, twang, peal, ஒலி. 2. Tone musical sound, கண்டத்திசை. 3. A figure of sound, change of meaning in a word or phrase by change of sound. (c.) தொலிச்சிலேடை, s. A சிலேடை in which there is only one important meaning, a part of the pharase being merely to make the pun, as ஒற்றுப்பெயர்த் தல். தொனியர்த்தம், s. Figurative meaning. தொனிவைக்க, inf. To make a great sound, noise, roar, &c., பேரொலிசெய்ய. 17)

vākku (p. 382) s. Word, speech, வார்த்தை. 2. The mouth, as one of the five organs of the body. See இந்திரியம். [ex Sa. Vach.] வாக்கு, 4. Four different sounds; 1. சூக்குமை, the sound from the navel--the supposed source of the air, or wind which gives intonation; 2. பைசந்தி, sound from the breast or lungs; 3. மத்திமை, sound from the throat or epiglottis; 4. வைகரி, articulate sound, from the tongue or mouth. அவருடையதுநல்லவாக்கு. His poetical composition is good. அவன்வாக்கிலேகேட்டேன். I heard it from his mouth. அமிர்தவாக்கு, s. A sweet word, a word of good omen--oppos. to விஷவாக்கு. வாக்காட, inf. To say, to speak. 2. To quarrel, as வாயாட. வாக்காள், s. Sarasvati, as வரகேசுரி. வாக்குக்குற்றம், s. A mistake, or fault, in speech, as வாய்க்குற்றம். வாக்குக்கெட்டாதது, appel. n. That which is unspeakable. வாக்கிட, inf. To promise. (p.) வாக்குச்சகாயம்பண்ண, inf. To aid by words, to recommend. வாக்குச்சித்தி, s. Success from words. See under சித்தி. வாக்குச்சொல்ல--வாக்குக்கொடுக்க-வாக்குப்பண்ண, inf. To promise, declare, pledge one's word. வாக்குத்தத்தம், s. A promise. See தத்தம். வாக்குத்தம்பம், s. The art of fascinating the mouth. See கலைஞானம். வாக்குத்தானம், s. See தானம், 15. வாக்குத்தானச்சனி, s. As இரண்டாமி டத்துச்சனி, under சனி. (R.) வாக்குத்தீட்சை--வாசகதீட்சை, s. Oral instruction--one of the modes of enlightening the mind of a disciple. See தீட்சை. வாக்குநாணயம், s. Fidelity to one's word, unfailing fulfilment of promises. வாக்குப்பிசக, inf. To slip, in words or utterance, as the tongue in pronunciation. 2. See பிசகு. வாக்குப்புரள--வாக்குமாற, inf. To fail in a promise, to break one's words. வாக்குப்புறப்படுதல், v. noun. The coming out of words from the mouth. வாக்குமூலம், s. A deposition in which the statements of complainants, defendants, and witnesses, are taken with their signatures. 2. [as adv. also வாக்கு முகாந்தரம்.] By word of mouth; upon one's assertion. வாக்குமூலம்வாங்குகிறது. Getting one's deposition as a magistrate. (Govt. usage.) வாக்குரோசம்--வாக்குரோஷம், s. Irritation from insulting words, irascibility. வாக்குவசீகரம், s. Cajoling, wheedling, இன்சொல். வாக்குவல்லபம், s. Emphatic and powerful language, oratorial speech. வாக்குவாதம், s. A disputation, a quarrel. வாக்குவிசேஷம், s. An effective speech. வாக்குவிற்க, inf. To give a binding promise, (lit.) to sell one's words (colloq.) நானவனுக்குவாக்குவிற்றிருக்கிறேன், தவறக்கூடா து. I cannot fail, for I have promised him firmly. 18)
