ēṉ (p. 79) . Why? what? wherefore? a change of என். 2. An affix of entreaty, இரக்கப்பொருளைத்தருமிடைச்சொல். 3. The common termination of the first person sing. in verbs and appellatives, தன்மையொருமைவி குதி.--Note. ஏன் is the common form of answering to a call. It is also in some places used as a sign affixed to the name of the contracting party in the introduction of bonds. ஏனென்பாரில்லை. No one cares (for him); i. e. to afford him relief. 2. He has a dislike to every thing worldly, being disposed to become an ascetic. கூப்பிட்டாலேனென்றுசொல்லு. If you are called, answer-lit. say ஏன். நான்வருவானேன். Why should I come? அவர்கள்போவானேன். Why should they go? In the last two examples, the verb is in the gerundial form--a finite verb being understood. 98)

kiḷḷu (p. 112) கிறேன், கிள்ளினேன், வேன், கிள்ள, v. a. To pinch with the finger and thump, the nails, &c., கையாற்கிள்ள. 2. To pinch off, to pluck, to nip, to pick--as a leaf, &c., இலைமுதலியகிள்ள. 3. To hold, take up, carry, &.--as with the beak, the fingers and thump, &c.; to take up a little, a pinch, &c., கொஞ்சமாயெடுக்க. வயிறுகிள்ளுகிறது. I am pinched with hunger. கிள்ளாக்கு, s. A bit of leaf, especially an ola given as a token of being sent by some superior, அதிகாரநறுக்கு. 2. A note of hand, a bit of leaf, a token from a person in authority--as a passport, warrant, letter of introduction, &c., உத்தார ச்சீட்டு. கிள்ளாப்பிறாண்டு, s. [prov.] A kind of child's play, pinching, ஓர்விளையாட்டு. 2. fig. Want of attention to guests, at a feast; distribution to them in small quantities, அலட்சியம். கிள்ளாப்பிறாண்டுபண்ண, inf. To give a hint, a signal; also a summery, &c.; lit. a pinch. கிள்ளிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To give a little from a great quantity. 2. To give but little, a pinch, &c. கிள்ளித்தெளிக்கமாட்டான். local. He will not even give a jerk. கிள்ளிப்பிடுங்க, inf. To pinch and pluck off. கிள்ளிவிட, inf. To stir up; to excite, to instigate. கிள்ளிவைக்க, inf. To set or take a little from a heap--as the small mnemonic heaps in measuring grain. கிள்ளுகீரை, s. Greens plucked off from the root. அவன்உனக்குக்கிள்ளுக்கீரையோ. Is he a mere youngster, that you may cuff him as you please? கிள்ளுக்கீரைப்பண்ண, inf. To insult, to treat insultingly. கிள்ளுக்கீரையாய்நினைத்துப்பேச, inf. To speak contemptibly. கிள்ளு, v. noun. A pinch, a nip; a little piece of betel-leaf, tobacco, &c., கிள்ளப் பட்டதுண்டு. 2. A pinch in quantity, துணி க்கை. கிள்ளுங்கிழியுமாய்ப்போகக்கடவது. tīṭcai (p. 242) --தீக்ஷை--தீக்கை, s. Initiation of disciple into the Siva religion by a Guru, who with appropriate ceremonies communicates the appointed mantras; also his introduction to any higher stage or degree in the system; குரூபதேசம். 2. Special means employed by a Guru for the instruction and mental illumination of a disciple; intended for the removal of his sins, and the ripening of his soul for emancipation, ஞானபோதனை. 3. The imparting of spiritual illumination to a soul ripening for absorption; its accumulated stock of merit and demerit--the results of former actions--together with its original மலம்--the source of these actions--being nearly exhausted by the joys and sufferings experienced in its former transmigrations, பக்குவான்மாவைக்க ரையேற்றல். 4. Performance of a course of austerities, விரதநியமம். 5. Performance of vows, சங்கற்பம். W. p. 41. DEEKSHA. --Note. There are seven kinds of தீட்சை. 1. சட்சுதீட்சை, சயனதீட்சை, by the eye or by looking on the disciple for the dispersion of his mental darkness and moral evils, and the communication of spiritual light. 2. பரிசதீட்சை, by the touch, or placing the right hand on the disciple's head, and touching five principle parts of his body, thus conferring on him the virtue of the five lettered incantations. 3. வாக்குத்தீட்சை, வாசகதீட்சை, oral instruction, and illumination. 4. மானசதீட்சை, by the mind or intense interest felt for the disciple, leading to the enlightening of his mind, &c. 5. சாத்திரதீட்சை, நூற்றீட்சை, spiritual illumination by means of the shastras. 6. யோகதீட்சை, பாவனதீட்சை, instruction by example, in character of the silent, motionless ascetic, in the eight postures prescribed. (See யோகம்.) 7. அ வுத்திரிதீட்சை, imparting instruction by symbolic figures, made on the ground, &c. This last is two-fold, ஞானாவுத்திரி, and கிரியாவுத்திரி.--Note. There are two other kinds of தீட்சை; 1. சபீசதீட்சை, instruction that has reference to future rites to make them complete; 2. நிர்ப்பீசதீட்சை, instruction complete in itself. சிவதீட்சை--சைவதீட்சை, 3 The three stated introductory rites of the Saiva system. 1. சமயதீட்சை, the initiatory rite of discipleship. 2. விசேஷதீட்சை, special rite confirming the disciple, after which he eats in private, or unseen by those of lower degree, and his eligible to read, and receive instruction in the Agama mysteries. It is administered only to சைவர், who eat no flesh or fish. 3. நிருவா ணதீட்சை, the highest rite entitling the disciple to perform puja, to sit and eat with his Guru, and to enjoy all the privileges of the system. தீட்சதர், s. (plu.) Persons who have received the initiatory, or any succeeding rite of the Saiva religion, தீட்சைபெற் றோர். 2. The brahmans of சிதம்பரம், formerly said to have been three-thousand, தில்லைமூவாயிரவர். தீட்சதன், s. A disciple who has received the தீட்சை. தீட்சைகேட்க--தீட்சைபெற, inf. To receive தீட்சை of the guru. தீட்சைகொடுக்க--தீட்சைபண்ண--தீட் சைவைக்க, inf. To administer தீட்சை. தீட்சைபெற்றவன், appel. n. (neg. தீட் சையில்லாதவன்.) One who has received தீட்சை, to whom the secrets of religion may be communicated. 16)

nekiẕu (p. 279) --நெகிழ், கிறது, நெகிழ்ந்தது, நெகிழும், நெகிழ. v. n. [also ஞெகிழ்.] To become loose, as a garment or bracelet, or as the earth by rain; also to grow lean and weak, தளர. 2. To slip off, as a garment, நழுவ. 3. To flow out, as tears from the eyes, or milk from the breast, பொசிய. 4. (சது.) To expand, to blossom, மலர. 5. To become liquified, to melt, உருக. 6. To relent, as the heart in pity, இளக. 7. To give way, to yield--as to the axe in cutting, or the hammer, in beating, அழுந்த. 4. To be forsaken, கைவிடப்பட. 9. To be reduced to powder, பொடியாக. 1. v. a. To forsake, விட்டுநீங்க. (c.) வஸ்திரம்நெகிழ்ந்தது. The garment has slipped down. நூன்முகம், s. Preface, introduction, முகவுரை. (சது.) 2. A literary or scientific work, as நூல். நூன்முகங்களிலேபழகினவன். One well learned in literary works. அதுநூன்முகத்திலேஅறியவேண்டும். It is to be known by reference to the book itself. நூன்முடிபு--நூன்முடிவு, v. noun. The object of a work, நூலினதுபொருணோக்கம். 16)

pāyiram (p. 311) s. Preface, introduction, preamble, prologue, முகவுரை. 2. Synopsis, compend, syllabus, பொழிப்புரை. (ஸ்காந்.) 3. [fig.] Origin, history, account, வரலாறு. Preface is of two kinds. -- I. பொதுப்பாயிரம். a general preface, of which there are five particulars: நூற்றிறன், the properties and characteristics of classical writing; 2. நூவல்வோன்திறன், the character of the teacher, and his ability and aptitude to teach; 3. நுவலுந்திறன், the mode of teaching, system of imparting education; 4. கொள்வோன்றிறன், the qualifications of the student; 5. கோடற்றிறன், the method of pursuing his studies. II. சிறப்புப்பாயிரம், a preface relating only to the book to which it is prefixed; in which are eleven particulars--ஆக்கியோன்பெயர், the name of the author; 2. வழி, the origin of the work; 3. எல்லை, the country wherein it is used; 4. நூற்பெயர், the name of the book; 5. யாப்பு, its merit, and the position it holds in the list of works; 6.நுதலியபொருள், the subjects treated; 7. கேட்போர், students fit to study it; 8. பயன், advantages to the learner; 9. காலம், the time when it was written; 1. களம், the assembly who sanctioned it; 11. காரணம், the motive which led to its being published. செறுமனத்தார்பாயிரங்கூறி. Enemies, boasting of their origin. 60)

The ceremony of offering rice for deceased ancestors. பிண்டகன், appel. n. One who offers an oblation of rice for a deceased ancestor, பிண்டமிடுவோன். பிண்டக்கரு, s. The f&oe;tus. பிண்டக்காப்பு, s. Boiled rice, as பிண் டம். (colloq.) பிண்டச்சூத்திரம், s. An introduction which lays open a subject. See சூத்திரம். பிண்டதானம்--பிண்டப்பிரதானம், s. Presenting balls of rice, cakes, &c., to the manes. See சிரார்த்தம். பிண்டப்புறனடை, s. Abstract remarks or notes in an author's work, connected with the subject in hand, or with others. பிண்டப்பொருள், s. The substance or free rendering of a verse, &c. 2. Any thing in mass, as a heap of paddy, &c. பிண்டம்பிடிக்க, inf. To form any thing into a globular shape. 2. To create--as the Deity. பிண்டம்போட, inf. To set a ball of rice for each of the manes, in the shraddha or funeral ceremony, also பிண்டம்வைக்க; 2. [in cant.] To eat. பிண்டம்விழுதல், appel. n. Miscarriage or abortion. பிண்டம்வெளிப்படல், s. Appearing of the f&oe;tus at birth. பிண்டவுரை, s. A comment giving the substance of a text, in a free but concise manner, without ornament.
