aṭṭam (p. 9) --அஷ்டம், s. Eight, எட்டு. (p.) Wils. p. 92. ASHTAN. அட்டகணம்--அஷ்டகணம், s. [in poetry.] The eight kinds of feet with which the invocation of a poem may begin; four indicative of good, and four of evil. See கணம். அஷ்டகம், s. The eight super-human powers, எண்வ கைச்சித்தி. See சித்தி. அஷ்டசுபம்--அஷ்டமங்கலம், s. The eight auspicious objects, to meet which is thought a favorable omen. See மங்கலம். அஷ்டதந்திரவாதம், s. One of the eighty disorders from flatulency, combining eight bad symptoms. அஷ்டதனம், s. The eight special advantages; viz. 1. ரூபம், beauty. 2. சம்பத்து, acquisitions. 3. வித்தை, skill. 4. விவேகம், wit, ingenuity. 5. குணம், good disposition. 6. தனம், gold. 7. நல் லகுலம், good caste. 8. வயது, age. அஷ்டதானபரீட்சை, s. The eight symptoms of disease. See பரீட்சை. அஷ்டதிக்கயம், s. The eight elephants of the cardinal points, எட்டுத்திசை யானை. See திக்கயம். அஷ்டதிக்குப்பாலகர், s. The regents of the eight cardinal points, எண் டிசைப்பாலகர். See திக்குப்பாலகர். அஷ்டநாகம்--அஷ்டமாநாகம், s. The eight serpents, எண்வகைநாகம். See நாகம். அஷ்டபந்தனம், s. One of the eight forms of puja. 2. Binding the cardinal points by incantations, &c. See திக்குக்கட்டு. அஷ்டபந்தனஞ்சாத்த, inf. To put a mixture of wax, resin, vermilion, frankincense, butter, &c., in the niche around a stone idol. அஷ்டபோகம், s. The eight species of enjoyment. See போகம். அஷ்டப்பிரமாணம், s. The eight laws of evidence. See பிரமாணம். அஷ்டமணம், s. The eight kinds of marriage. See மணம். அஷ்டமச்சனி--அஷ்டமத்துச்சனி, s. Saturn situated in the eighth sign from that of one's birth, when his influence is deemed the most malignant, எட்டாமிடத்துச்சனி. அஷ்டமாந்தம், s. The eight kinds of disease in children. See மாந்தம். அஷ்டமி, s. The eighth day of the moon, either waxing or waning, எட் டாந்திதி. 2. The eighth of any series or number, எட்டாவது. அஷ்டமூர்த்தம், s. The eight forms assumed by Siva, spiritual and natural, regarded as his bodies. அஷ்டமூர்த்தி, s. Siva, சிவன். See the preceding. அஷ்டமூலம், s. The eight medicinal roots. A medicine composed of eight metals: 1. பொன், gold. 2. வெள்ளி, silver. 3. செம்பு, copper. 4. இரும்பு, iron. 5. வெண்கலம், white copper. 6. தரா, brass. 7. வங்கம், lead. 8. துத்தநாகம், zinc, with different salts and vegetable juices; the whole prepared by fire and reduced to powder to be used in various diseases. அஷ்டவசுக்கள், s. The eight வ சுக்கள், a class of தேவர் or gods. See வசுக்கள். அஷ்டவணிககுணம், s. The eight qualities of a good tradesman. See வ ணிககுணம். அஷ்டவருக்கம், s. aẕai (p. 33) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To invite, bid, call, accost respectfully, cite, summon, வாவென்ன. 2. To invoke the deity, &c., to adjure a spirit to take temporary possession of a person, in order to utter an oracle, வேண்டியழைக்க. 3. To lead, conduct, &c., கூட்டிப்போக. 4. To introduce as into an assembly, சபைக் கழைக்க. 5. To call (a snake, evil spirit, &c.,) by incantation, enchantment, &c., மந்திரத்தாலழைக்க. 6. To evoke, charm, invite or draw into union with, எத்தியழைக்க. அருத்தனே யடியேனாதரித்தழைத்தாலதெந்தவேயெ ன்றருளாயே. Oh! divine father, if I reverently invoke three, thou wilt condescened to own me as thine. (திருவாசகம்.) அவனையழைத்துக்கொண்டுவந்தான். He called and brought him. விருந்துக்கழைக்க, inf. To invite to a meal, or an entertainment. அழைக்கை, v. noun. A call, a calling, கூவுகை. அழைப்பு, v. noun. Invitation, request, citation, summons, invocation, விளிக்கை. 12)

ōlm (p. 84) s. Sound, noise, roar, சத்தம். 2. A cry of lamentation, appeal to, or invocation of the deity, அபயக்குரல். 3. Snake, பாம்பு. (Rott.) 4. The sea, கடல். (p.) மூர்த்தியே--ஓலம்--ஓலம். Swamy, help, help (I cry to thee for aid). ஓலமிடுதல், v. noun. Calling on a deity, or superior for help. invoking audibly, அபயமிடுதல். 2. Calling or weeping aloud. ஓலமிட்டழுகிறாள். She weeps with a loud voice. ஒருத்தனேயுன்னையோலமிட்டலறியுலகெலாந் தேடியுங்காணேன். O thou the only God, I invoked thy aid in a weeping tone and sought for thee in vain the whole world over. kṭvuḷ (p. 87) s. The Deity, the Supreme Being, தெய்வம். 2. A god, a demigod, வர னவன். 3. A sage, முனிவன். 4. A guru, குரு. 5. Goodness, நன்மை; [ex கட, surpassing, or கடம், bounded in, or by whom all are bound, the all-comprehensive being by whom universal nature is bounded.]-Note. Some philologists identify this word with the Anglo-Saxon word, God. கடவுட்பணி, s. The serpent ஆதி சேடன். 2. Divine service, கடவுளூழியம். கடவுட்பாம்பு, s. Demigod of a serpent race supposed to support the earth, ஆதிசேடன். கடவுண்மூர்த்தி, s. Argha, the deity worshipped by the Jainas, அருகன். கடவுளர், s. The gods, வானவர். கடவுளர்தாரம், s. A medicinal tree, தேவதாரம், Sethia Indica, L. (M. Dic.) கடவுள்வணக்கம், s. Invocation addressed to a god or the gods at the commencement of a treatise, மங்களாசரணை மூன்றினுளொன்று. 2. I am anxious to get a propitious look, glance of your eye. கடைக்கண்ணாற்பார்க்க, inf. To glance, look sidewise. 2. To cast a propitious or benignant look. கடைக்கண்பார்வை, v. noun. A side look, a glance. 2. A propitious or benignant look, approbation, a token of favor. கடைக்கனல்--கடையனல், s. The final deluge-fire, ஊழித்தீ. கடைக்காப்பு, s. Stern of a vessel--also written கடையால். கடைசாலொதுக்க, inf. To finish a business in hand. கடைச்சங்கம், s. The third and last of the ancient Madura colleges consisting of forty-nine literati, இறுதிச்சங் கம். கடைச்சரக்கு, s. Curry stuff, spices, &c., drugs, medicines, &c., sold in the bazaar, கடையில்விற்கப்படுஞ்சரக்கு. கடைச்சன், s. The youngest son, கடைப்பிள்ளை. கடைஞர், s. The laboring caste in agricultural districts, மருதநிலமாக்கள். கடைதலைப்பூட்டு, s. An inverted construction in poetry, by which the last word in a verse is connected with the first, விற்பூட்டுப்பொருள்கோள். கடைதிறப்பு, v. noun. Opening a door. In erotics, the section which relates to an application made for the opening of a door to a coming or expected lover; or in war poems, to a warrior returning in triumph after a victory, கதவுதிறக்கை. (p.) கடைத்தடம், s. Gate-way, வாயில். (p.) கடைத்தரம், s. The last class, the lowest or worst kind, கீழ்த்தரம். கடைத்தலை--கடைத்தலைவாயில்-கடைத்தலைவாய்தல், s. The outer gate, the outer court or yard, தலைவாயில். கடைத்தெரு, s. A market-street, a bazaar, கடைவீதி. கடைத்தேற, inf. [prop. கடத்தேற.] To be saved, to escape all afflictions. கடைத்தேற்றம், s. [prop. கடத்தேற் றம்.] Salvation. கடைநாள்--கடைமீன், s. The twenty-seventh lunar asterism, இரேவதி. (p.) கடைநிலை, s. A poem uttered by holy persons coming from a distance to the hero of the poem at the door of whose residence they stand and desire the door-keeper to inform his master of their arrival, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். (See பிரபந்தம்.) 2. An outside door, புறவாயில். (நீதிநெறி.) 3. The last letter of a word or verse, ஈற்றெழுத்து. (p.) கடைநிலைத்தீபகம், s. A word at the end of a sentence understood in other parts--one of the தீவகம். கடைநிலையளபெடை, s. The rhyme in which the last letter of each verse is lengthened. கடைநிலையெழுத்து, s. [in grammar.] Letters proper to end a word, இறுதிநிலை. கடைபோக, inf. To end, terminate, conclude, முடிய. 2. To be fulfilled, நிறைவேற. கடைபோட--கடைவைக்க, inf. To set up a shop, open a shop. கடைப்பட, inf. To be inferior, below mediocrity, to be last in quality or estimation, degree or order, இழிவாக. 2. To be practicable, capable of completion, நிறைவேற. என்னாலிதுகடைப்படாது. This will not be completed by me. கடைப்பாடு, s. Determination, தீர் மானிப்பு. 2. Inferiority, baseness, இழிவு. கடைப்பந்தி, s. The lower end of a dining table or of a row of guests, கடைசிப்பந்தி. கடைப்பிடி, s. Bearing in mind, remembering, ஞாபகம். 2. Indelible impressions of gratitude for benefits received, of duties to be performed, of the importance of virtue and religion, மறவா மை. 3. Certainty, ascertainment, established truth, தேற்றம். 4. Firm belief in the essentials of religion serving as the hope and support of the mind in reference to a future state, the last grasp of the soul, உறுதி. 5. Firm determination, firm resolve, either for good or evil, கரும முடிக்குந்துணிவு. 6. Doctrines, truth firmly believed as necessary to salvation, உறுதி யானகொள்கை. கடைப்பிடிக்க, inf. To ascertain clearly, to know certainly, தெளிய. 2. To determine, resolve firmly, be decided in purpose either in a good or evil course, துணிய. 3. To remember, to bear in mind benefits, to be grateful, &c., to be deeply sensible of one's obligations for favor received, மறவாமலிருக்க. 4. To have an abiding sense of the importance of virtue and religion, சன்மார்க்கத்திலுறுதியாயி ருக்க. 5. To have an unwavering faith in the essentials of religion, to embrace or take firm hold of religious instructions, &c., தேவபத்தியிலுறுதியாயிருக்க. 6. To grasp, resort to--as the soul for its last refuge, பற்ற. 7. To provide, be provident, be economical, வீண்செலவுசெய்யாது வைக்க. (p.) கதவிலரேதற்சார்ந்தார்வண்ணங்கடைப்பிடியாதார். Unkind are they who are forgetful of the situation of their friends. (காரிகையுரை.) மற்றதன்கள்ளங்கடைப்பிடித்தனன்று. It is important to have an abiding sense of the wiles of Yama. வாழ்க்கைக்குவேண்டும்பொருளறிந்துகடைப்பிடி த்தலும். Knowing and duly providing all things necessary for her household-(குறளுரை.) நன்மைகடைப்பிடி. Persevere in good works. (ஔவை). கடைப்பிறப்பு, s. The meanest species of birth in any class of beings, இழிந்தபிறப்பு. கடைப்புணர்முரண்--கடைமுரண், s. A species of rhyme when the last foot of every line is of opposite meaning, ஓர்தொடை. கடைப்புணர்வு--கடைப்பூட்டு, s. [in jewelry.] Clasp, hasp, அணியின்கடைப் புணர்வு. கடைப்புத்தி, s. [prov.] Stupidity, இழிந்தபுத்தி. 2. A piece of folly, பின்புத்தி. கடைப்போக்கு, s. The flood-gate of tank. கடைமடக்கு, s. [in rhetoric.] Continued recurrence of the same words at the end of each line through a stanza, but with different meanings, சொல்லணி யிலொன்று. See மடக்கு. கடைமுறை, s. The last time, eventually, கடைசிமுறை. (நீதிநெறி. 48.) கடைமோனை--கடையாகுமோனை, s. (See மோனை.) A rhyme when the first letter of the last foot of every line is the same, ஓர்தொடை. (p.) கடையயல், s. [in grammar.] The penultimate, ஈற்றயல். (p.) கடையர், s. (fem. கடைசியர்--க டைச்சியர்.) Laboring classes in agricultural districts, மருதநிலமாக்கள். (p.) கடையழிய, inf. To be afflicted with a painful and lingering disease, to suffer extremely, வருந்த. 2. To be distressed with poverty, வறுமையுற. 3. To degenerate, கேடுற. கடையனல், s. The fire by which the world will finally be consumed. கடையன், s. A man of the lowest rank, இழிந்தோன். கடையாகெதுகை, s. A rhyme, ஓர்தொடை. (p.) கடையாட்டம், s. [prov.] Lingering in disease, excessive suffering from disease, வருத்தம். 2. Vexation, teasing, imminence, trouble, annoyance, உலைவு, lit. mean work. கடையாட்டப்பட, inf. To drudge, to be employed in mean work. 2. To linger in disease, suffer exceedingly, வ ருந்த. 3. To be vexed. harassed. &c.-as a nurse by troublesome children, உ லைய. கடையாணி, s. A linch-pin, அச் சாணி. 2. A peg or pin used to keep a tenon in a mortise, or for any similar purpose, பூட்டாணி. கடையாந்தரம்--கடையீறு, s. [vul.] The very last, the extremity, &c.--as கடைசி. கடையாயார், s. Persons of the lowest rank, இழிந்தோர். கடையால், s. Stern of a vessel, தோணியின்பிற்புறம். See கடைசால், usage. கடையிணைமுரண், s. A rhyme when the last two feet of a line are of opposite meanings, ஓர்தொடை. (p.) கடையிணைமோனை, s. A consonance of the first letters in the last two feet of each line in a verse. (p.) கடையீடு, s. Land of the poorest quality, கடைத்தரமானநிலம். கடையுணி, s. [prov.] A mean fellow who eats what he can beg or pick up-- a worthless being, இழிந்தோன். கடையுண்ண, inf. [prov.] To linger in disease, வருத்தப்பட. 2. To be stinted or weak in growth--as a child, நசுங்க. 3. To be neglected, abused, &c.-- as a book, a utensil, &c.; in this meaning it is a term of displeasure, இகழப்பட. கடையுவா, s. The full moon, பௌரணை. (p.) கடையெழுஞ்சனி, s. The twelfth asterism in which Saturn is considered malignant in his influence, உத்திரம். See சனி. கடைவழி, s. Final salvation, the last path. கடைவழிக்குதவும். It will avail for the salvation of the soul. காதற்றஊசியும்வாராதுகாணுங்கடைவழிக்கே. Be assured that even an eyeless needle will not accompany you in that sad hour. கடைவளர, inf. To be enlarged-said of the genitals of a cow, &c., before yeaning, ஈனுங்காலத்திற்குறிவிரிய. கடைவள்ளல், s. The last of the third class of liberal men--he who bestows charity from motives of ostentation, கேட்டபின்கொடுப்போன். கடைவாய், s. The corner or extremities of the mouth, வாயின்கடை. கடைவாய்நக்கி, s. A great miser, உலுத்தன், lit. he who licks the corners of his mouth. கடைவாய்ப்பல், s. The double teeth, the grinders, the back teeth. கடைவாய்வழிய, inf. The anger of those who have attained to the summit of virtue, though it is ever so transient, is hardly endurable-(குறள்.) கணநாதர்--கணநாயகர், s. The attendants of Siva, கணாதிபர். கணபதி, s. Ganesa, விநாயகன். கணப்பொருத்தம், s. One of the அட்டகணம். 2. One of the விவாகப்பொருத் தம். கணப்பொழுது, s. A moment, ச ணப்பொழுது கணமூலம், s. The root of longpepper. கணமூலி, s. The சாணாக்கி herb, Ocimum, L. கணாதிபன், s. Ganesa, விக்கினேசு ரன். 2. Siva, சிவன். கணேசன், s. Ganesa, son of Siva and Parvati--god of wisdom and remover of obstacles--whence he is invoked in all new undertakings. He is represented as a short man with an elephant's head and large belly, வினாயகன். Wils. p. 278. GAN'ESHA. விவாககணம்--வதுவைக்கணம், s. The correspondence between the constellations under which the bride and bridegroom were born. It is of three kinds, viz.: 1. தேவகணம், when both the bride and bridegroom are born under the following seven constellations, அச்சு வினி, அத்தம், அனுடம், இரேவதி, சோதி, புநர்பூசம் and மிருகசீரிடம். The union of such is regarded auspicious. 2. மனிதகணம், when they are born under the following eleven constellations, உத்திரம், உரோகணி, உத்திரட்டா தி, உத்திராடம், திருவாதிரை, திருவோணம், பரணி, பூசம், பூரட்டாதி, பூரம் and பூராடம். Or even if the former be of the first class, and the latter of the second, or vice versa, it is thought indifferent. 3. இராக்கதகணம், when they are born under the following constellations, அவிட்டம், ஆயிலியம், கார்த்தி கை, கேட்டை, சதயம், சித்திரை, மகம், மூலம், and விசாகம், it is thought indifferent; but should the first be of either of the former class and the second of the last class, or vice versa, it is thought inauspicious. இக்கணம், s. This instant, now. அட்டகணம்--அஷ்டகணம், s. [in poetry.] The eight kinds of ominous feet with which the invocation of the poem may begin, viz.: (1) நிலம் (ground), நிலக் கணம், a foot consisting of three நிரை; (which see)--as கருவிளங்கனி. (2) நீர் (water), நீர்க்கணம், a foot consisting of one நேர் and two நிரை--as கூவிளங்கனி. (3) மதி (moon), சந்திரகணம், a foot consisting of one நிரை, and two நேர்; (which see)--as புளிமாங்காய். (4) இயமானன் (life, soul), இந் திரகணம், a foot consisting of three நேர்-as தேமாங்காய். A poem in which the invocation commences with any of the above four கணம், is believed by Tamulians to bring good luck to the hero of the poem. (5) சூரியன் (sun), சூரியகணம், a foot consisting of one நேர், one நிரை and one நேர்--as கூவிளங்காய்; this foreshows that the hero of the poem will soon become a coward. (6) தீ (fire), தீக் கணம், a foot consisting of one நிரை, one நேர் and one நிரை--as புளிமாங்கனி; this portends a loss of health. (7) வாயு (air), மாருதகணம், a foot consisting of two நேர் and one நிரை--as தேமாங்கனி; this foretells the loss of wealth. (8) ஆகாயம் (sky, expanse), அந்தரகணம், a foot consisting of two நிரை and one நேர்--as கருவிளங்காய்; this portends shortness of life. The last four கணம், are on the whole considered to be inauspicious. See சீர். பதினெண்கணம், s. The eighteen classes of dependent supernals, viz.: 1. அமரர், immortals, the inhabitants of Swerga. 2. சித்தர், a kind of gods. 3. அசுரர், demons. 4. தைத்தியர், another kind of demons. 5. கருடர், another kind of gods. 6. கின்னரர், celestial musicians. 7. நிருதர், a kind of demons. 8. கிம்புரு டர், a kind of celestial musicians who possess a human face and the body of a bird. 9. காந்தருவர், heavenly choristers. 1. இயக்கர், demigods who minister to gods, attendants particularly on குபே ரன். 11. விஞ்சையர், heavenly magicians. 12. பூதர், ghosts, familiar spirits. 13. பிசாசர், devils. 14. அந்தரர், wanderers. 15. முனிவர், sages, hermits, learned men. 16. உரகர், serpents. 17. ஆகாயவாசிகள், those who dwell in the air. 18. போக பூமியர், those who by the practice of virtue in this world have attained a residence in that of the particular principal deity whom they worshipped. They are ever blooming and young; their time of residence, however in this abode of happiness depends upon the merit they had acquired previous to their admission. நாற்கணம், s. The four classes of letters, viz.: 1. உயிர்க்கணம், vowels. 2. வன்கணம், the six hard-sounding letters. 3. மென்கணம், the six soft-sounding letters. 4. இடைக்கணம், the six middlesounding letters. கணம், s. A circle, வட்டம். 2. A ball, rotundity, திரட்சி 3. One of the eight kinds of diseases in children--a kind of hectic fever, ஓர்நோய். 4. A kind of grass, ஓர்புல். (p.) கணக்காய்ச்சல், s. [impr. கணைக் காய்ச்சல்.] A kind of lingering fever in children. 48) *

kaṉṉikai (p. 102) s. A virgin undefloured, a girl unmarried, கன்னிமையழிவில்லாள். 2. The five கன்னிகை, viz.: அகலிகை, the wife of கௌதமன்; துரோபதை, the wife of the பஞ்ச பாண்்டவர் or five brothers, sons of the king பாண்டு; சீதை, the wife of இராமன்; தாரை the wife of வாலி; and மண்டோதரி, the wife of இரா வணன். 3. (p.) The pericarp of a lotus, தாம ரைப்பூங்கொட்டை. Wils. p. 196. KARNIKA. 4. A flower-bud, பூவரும்பு. (p.) கா காத்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To keep, preserve. மானங்காத்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To preserve one's self-respect, character, dignity. காவாமல், neg. ver. part. [vul. காக் காமல்.] Not keeping. தன்னைக்காக்க--தற்காக்க, inf. To keep one's self, to act so as to avoid blame, scandal, &c. காத்தல், v. noun. Defending, guarding, &c. காப்பு, v. noun. Preservation, defence, guard, protection, cherishing, பாது காப்பு. 2. Watching, caution, vigilance, காவல். 3. Warding off, guarding against, இரட்சிப்பு. 4. s. An amulet, இரட்சாபந்தன ம். 5. A bangle or bracelet,கைக்காப்பு. 6. A bandage tied round the arm, in token of a vow for hearing a sacred book read at a temple, keeping a feast, &c.-serving also as an amulet for the time, and as a monitory to practise abstinence and other required duties, to abstain from ceremonial pollutions, &c.-- also tied on the arms of a newly-married couple for four days, who are to keep apart for this time--also on the candidates for initiation by the Guru, மஞ்சள்நூ ற்காப்பு. 7. The invocation at the commencement of all poems, imploring the protection, aid, blessing of the god worshipped by the author, and often of others, தெய்வவணக்கங்கூறுங்காப்பு. 8. The arm-ring of the Guru, worn on the right arm as an amulet on special occasions, கோயிற்குருவணியுங்காப்பு. 9. A string tied round medical plants with incantations to avert evil effects in their use,மூலிகைக் குக்கட்டுங்காப்பு. 1. (p.) A surrounding wall, a fortification, a fence, a hedge, &c., மதில். 11. A door, கதவு. 12. Sacred ashes worn as an amulet, திருநீறு. 13. Clothes, ஆடை. காப்புக்கட்டில்லாமலெல்லாருமுள்ளேவரலாமா. Is it proper for all to come in without restraint? கன்னிகாதானம்--கன்னியாதானம், s. Giving a virgin in marriage--one of the thirty-two meritorious acts. See அறம். கன்னிகாரத்தினம், s. An illustrious virgin. 84)

kāppuccollutl (p. 102) v. noun. Reciting the invocation of a purana at the beginning and end of every day's reading. 2. Reciting the invocation in the last day's reading with special ceremonies. 3. Repeating the recitation of the invocation extempore for such as come late.

caṉṉiyāci (p. 174) s. A Hindu ascetic, a wandering devotee who has renounced social life, with all its enjoyments and attachments, subjected his passions, and lives on what is given him unasked. He remains in a village only one day, in a town not more than three days, and in a city only five; lest his mind become secularized. See ஆச்சிரமம். 2. [among R. Catho.] A monk; [ex சன்னியாசம்.]--Note. There are two orders of சன்னியாசி, namely. 1. ஏகதண்டசன்னியாசி, one who carries a single staff, and is of the Smriti sect; 2. திரிதண்ட சன்னியாசி, one who carries three staves tied together, and is a worshipper of Vishnu. சா சாவாக்கியம், s. A Table of equations. சாவிசேஷம், s. Tidings of death. சாவிளைவு, s. A good crop as a prognostic to one's death; spoken after the occurrence. சாவீடு, s. A funeral-house. சாவெடி, s. [prov. சாவெடில்.] The smell of a dead body, பிணநாற்றம். சாவெழுத்து, s. Fatal letters; a class of letters, which it is supposed may be so placed in an invocation, as to effect the death of a person to whom the verse is addressed--intentionally or unintentionally. See எழுத்துத்தானம். சாவோலை, s. An ola-letter burnt at the end, for a funeral mark, giving notice of death. உற்கிரமச்சா, s. The versed sine. See also கிராமச்சா--மூலச்சா, the sine; and கோடி ச்சா, the cosine. 4) *

civaṉ (p. 188) s. Siva, the third of the Indian Triad, in the character of destroyer, or reducer of things to their primitive atoms. By his votaries he is considered the supreme god. the other deities being subject to him, சங்கரன். சிவகணம், s. The attendant demi-gods of Siva, commonly in companies, சிவன் சேனை. சிவசமயம், s. The Siva religion. சிவசிந்தை, s. Divine contemplation, meditation on Siva--as சிவத்தியானம். சிவஞானசித்தியார்--சிவஞானசித்தி, s. A commentary on சிவஞானபோதம். See சித்தி யார். சிவஞானபோதம், s. A celebrated work consisting of twelve rules translated from the ரௌரவம், or the sixteenth Agama, being almost the only part of the Agamas known in Tamil. It is regarded as divine, without origin, and as not to be read unless the person has attained a competent degree in the religion. Other works--as சித்தியார், சிவப்பி ரகாசம், தத்துவப்பிரகாசம், &c., are commentaries on this or other treatises in support of its doctrines, ஓராகமநூல். சிவஸ்தலம்--சிவஸ்தானம்--சிவதலம், s. Temples, places, &c., sacred to Siva; Saiva temples. சிவதத்துவம், s. Degrees of religious power or attainment derived from Siva, of which five are specified--as 1. சத் தவித்தை. 2. ஈச்சுரம். 3. சாதாக்கியம். 4. சத்தி. 5. சிவம், which see severally. சிவதரிசனம், s. Sight or knowledge of Siva. 2. Pilgrimage to holy places of Siva. 3. A treatise containing a representation of the deity according to the Agamas, ஓர்நூல். சிவதர்மம்--சிவதன்மம், s. Meritorious or virtuous works performed in reference to Siva, as distinguished from actions of benevolence to creatures, பதி தர்மம். 2. One of the eighteen secondary Puranas, ஒருபுராணம். சிவதர்மோத்தரம்--சிவதன்மோத்தரம், s. The Uttera Candum (உத்தரகாண்டம்.) or the last part of the சிவதன்மபுராணம். சிவதீட்சை, s. The initiatory ceremony on entering the Saiva sect. சிவதீர்த்தம், s. A sacred tank within the precincts of the great temple at Ramisseram. சிவதொண்டு, s. Service of Siva. சிவதொண்டர், s. Devotees or votaries of Siva. சிவத்தாபனம்--சிவஸ்தாபனம், s. An edifice sacred to Siva, a large shrine. சிவத்தியானம், s. Contemplation of Siva in silent devotion, an image being formed in the mind as an object of worship. சிவத்துரோகம், s. Sin against Siva; a profanation of sacred things. சிவநிந்தை, s. Blasphemy or contempt of Siva. சிவபஜனை, s. Praising Siva by lyrics. சிவபத்தர்--சிவபத்திக்காரர்--சிவமதஸ்தர், s. Worshippers or devotees of Siva as distinguished from விட்டுணுபத்தர். சிவபத்தி, s. The religion of Siva. 2. The profession of the Siva religion. 3. Adherence, attachment, or devotedness to Siva. சிவபுண்ணியம், s. Deeds of merit, performances in reference to Siva--as சிவதர்மம். சிவபூசை, s. The worship of Siva as practised in the temple or by the கிரியை க்காரன்; the Siva-pujah, consisting of the offering of flowers, milk, boiled rice, fruits, &c., waving incense and light-reciting mantras and praises, prostrating, before the idol, &c., 2. Mental worship of Siva, in which there is an idol ceremony corresponding to what is mentioned above. சிவபூசைவேளையிலே கரடியைவிட்டாட்டுகிறதா. Is it proper to exhibit a dancing bear during the Siva-pujah--i. e. to trifle on a solemn occasion? சிவபுராணம், s. The Siva-Puranas, forming ten out of the eighteen. See புராணம். சிவபுரி, s. The abode of Siva, or city in the Siva-logam, கைலாசபுரி. 2. The city of Benares, as sacred to Siva, காசி முதலியநகரிகள். சிவபோகம், s. Enjoyment of the soul in union with Siva. (தத்.) சிவப்பிரகாசம், s. A work on the Agama philosophy, exhibiting in a condensed view the doctrines inculcated in சித்தியார், and other cognate works. சிவப்பிரதிட்டை--சிவப்பிரதிஷ்டை, s. The consecration of a temple or image of Siva. சிவப்பிராமணர், s. Brahmans, குருக்கள் who adhere to the Siva or Agama doctrines and practices, as distinguished from those who profess the வைதீகம். சிவப்பிரீதி, s. That which is acceptable, agreeable and pleasing to Siva--as fruits, &c. 2. May it be acceptable to Siva, --spoken by the receiver as an acknowledgement of a gift, an act of reverence, &c. சிவமயம், s. A term of invocation; also of benediction--meaning happiness, prosperity, and success, சுபமஸ்து. சிவமுந்திருக்கூட்டமும், s. See under கூட்டம். சிவமூர்த்திபேதங்கள், s. The different forms assumed by the deity, the gods. சிவராத்திரி, s. (Sometimes சிவநிசி.) The night preceding the new moon in February, kept as a watchnight in honor of Siva. சிவவாக்கியம், s. A poem on theism, wholly condemning polytheism, ஓர் நூல். சிவவாக்கியர், s. The name of a celebrated saint, the author of the poem சிவவாக்கியம். சிவலிங்கம், s. The Linga, as the chief image and material object of worship in the Saiva religion. சிவலோகம், s. The world of Siva, being the upper of the seven superior worlds. See சிவபுரி. சிவவேடம், s. The habiliments, or other badges characteristic of the worshippers of Siva--as red vestments, sacred beads, ashes, the linga, &c. சிவனடியார், s. Votaries of Siva. 2. The sixty-three special votaries of Siva mentioned in Periya Purana. சிவாகமம், s. The Agamas as the scriptures of the Siva sect, being twentyeight; of these the சிவஞானபோதம், a part of the ரௌரவம் and the வாதுளம், are translated into Tamil. The place for an image of Siva used for daily worship; [ex ஆதனம்.] சிவாயநம, s. The famous five lettered incantation called the மூலமந்திரம்--as being the foundation of spiritual wisdom and all religion, and the means prescribed and proper for obtaining liberation, from births and union with the supreme. சிவார்ச்சனை, s. cēvi (p. 209) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To serve, as a soldier, படையிற்சேவிக்க. 2. To worship, serve; to serve God, to serve a master, perform service, minister, பணி விடைசெய்ய. 3. To serve a demon, as a magician, பேயைச்சேவிக்க. 4. To play on loud instruments in the temple, at a wedding, festival, &c., வாத்தியமுழக்க. 5. To sing praises with beating of drums, &c., in the invocation of a deity or demon, for the utterance of oracles, சுவாமிசேவிக்க. 6. To make obeisance pay respects, homage, &c., பெரியோரைவணங்க. 7. tṉi (p. 231) [impers. used adverbially and as an adjective.] Alone, solitary, sequestered, secluded, distinct, separate, detached, insulated, தனிமையான. 2. Sole, single, only, individual, ஒன்றான. 3. Unique, matchless. unparalled, ஒப்பில்லாத. 4. Unlike, without an equal, one of the pair--the other being wanting, ஒற்றையான. 5. Independent, absolute, entire, சுவாதீனமான. 6. Pure, simple, unadulterated, unalloyed, genuine, கலப் பில்லாத. 7. Deserted, forsaken, forlorn, helpless, ஏதுமற்ற. --Note. க், ச், த், ப், are doubled after தனி. (c.) தனிக்கடவுள், s. Absolute deity, the matchless deity. தனிக்காட்டுராசா, s. A sole sovereign in a jungle. (c.) தனிக்காப்பு, s. An invocation, comprized in a single verse. தனிக்குடி, s. (also ஒன்றிக்குடி.) A solitary family. 2. One family of a caste, living among other castes. 3. Keeping house separately, as distinguished from living under the paternal roof. தனிக்குடை, s. The umbrella of an autocrat; (fig.) absolute sovereignty, தனியாசாட்சி. தனிக்குடைநிழற்ற. To spread the imperial umbrella, to govern. (p.) தனிக்குறில்--தனிக்குற்றெழுத்து, s. A single short consonant. தனிக்கோலான், s. He whose government is incomparable, the Supreme Being, கடவுள். 2. An independent sovereign. (p.) தனிச்சமையல், v. noun. Cooking for a single person, for one's self only, &c., தனிச்செய்கை, v. noun. Cultivating land alone, not jointly with others. தனிச்சொல், s. (Bab. Gram. p. 8.) A detached foot in வெண்பா and other verse, between two lines, தனிச்சீர். 2. A single or uncombined word. தனித்தனியே, adv. Individually, separately, each one singly, each alone. --Note. The ஏ is often added whether தனி be repeated or not--as தனியே. தனித்தாட்டன், s. [prov.] A large monkey that keeps distinct from, or goes before, the drove. தனித்தியலிடுகுறிப்பெயர், s. A specific name, including many individuals, or some varieties. தனித்தேட்டம், s. Amassing wealth alone, without the burden of a family. தனிநிலை, s. Solitariness, தனி்துநிற் கை. 2. (in gram.] The letter ஃ, ஆய்த வெழுத்்து. தனிப்பட, inf. [adverbially.] To be alone, to be left alone, to be forseken. 2. To be solitary. 3. To be kept alone as witnesses and prisoners, or apart, detached--as persons, or animals. (c.) தனிப்படச்சொல்லுகிறேன். I will tell you in secret. தனிப்பட்டு, s. A single or distinct fold, plait, strand or string, one out of several folds of a necklace. 2. (c.) Silk only, all silk. தனிப்பயணம், s. Travelling alone, as தனிவழி. தனிப்பன்றி, s. A wild boar alone, as more ferocious and dangerous than others. தனிப்பாடு, v. noun. Loneliness, solitude. தனிமை. 2. Bearing the whole labor, responsibility, &c., alone, முழப் பொறுப்பு. A sacred name, the name of a deity or holy person. 2. The Vaishnuva sectarian mark on the forehead. 3. A divine song. திருநாளைப்போவார், appel. n. One of the sixty-three devotees of Siva. திருநாள், s. A religious festival, a great or special day, a holy day. திருநீலகண்டன், s. A large kind of centiped, ஓர்பூரான். 2. One of the sixtythree devotees of Siva, சிவனடியாரிலொரு வன். 3. A very wicked man. திருநீறு, s. (also விபூதி.) Sacred ashes of burnt cowdung, one of the chief marks of the Saiva sect. திருநீறணிய--திருநீறிட--திருநீறுபூச, inf. To rub sacred ashes on the forehead, breast, &c. திருநீறுசுட--திருநீறுவிளைவிக்க, inf. To make sacred ashes. திருநீற்றுக்காப்பு, s. Sacred ashes rubbed on one's forehead by a great person as a charm or for benefit to the soul. 2. As திருநீறு. திருநீற்றுக்கோயில்--திருநீற்றுப்பை, s. A bag for sacred ashes. திருநீற்றுப்பச்சை--திருநீற்றுப்பத்திரி, s. The official look of the guru in the administration of the தீட்சை. திருப்படைவீடு, s. Putting on the wedding badge, as the essential part of marriage, தாலிகட்டுகை. 2. The wedding badge, தாலி. திருமகள்--திருமாது, s. Lukshmi. திருமகண்மைந்தன், s. Kama; [ex மைந் தன், son.] திருமஞ்சனம், s.
