āṇvm (p. 38) s. Pride, arrogance, manliness, கருவம். 2. Self-importance, self-will, conceit of doing some thing one's self, instead of ascribing all transactions, to the deity; in which sense, it is one of the three evil principles or மலம், in which the soul is involved from eternity, and by which it is excited to the performance of moral actions and kept from union with the deity. These must be subjected and annihilated, for the soul's liberation, by the அருள் of the deity. It is used as a means of benefit to the soul, as the acid in fruit becomes a luscious juice, மும்மலத்தொன்று; [ex ஆள்.] 2. One of the thirty-two kinds of arsenic in its natural state, கோளகபாஷாணம். ஆணவப்பிணிப்பு, v. noun. The bondage of moral evil, original sin, ஆண வமலபந்தம். (p.) ஆணவமலம், s. One of the three kinds of மலம். ஆணவமறைப்பு, v. noun. The illusion or blindness in which the soul is held through the power of ஆணவம், மூல மலத்தடை. 20) *

iẕi (p. 55) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. n. To descend, dismount, sink, fall into, to be involved in, இறங்க. 2. To be degraded, disgraced, to degenerate, to be reduced in character, estimation, rank or circumstances, இழிவுபட. 3. To fall below mediocrity, to be inferior, to be below in comparison, தாழ. இழிகடை, s. [vul.] The meanest, lowest, most degraded, மிகவிழிந்தது. (Abusively.) அவனொரு இழிகடை. He is a low wretch. இழிகண், s. Inflammation of the eyes causing the lids to droop, இழிந்தகண். இழிகுலத்தோர், s. Low caste people, கீழ்மக்கள். இழிசனர், s. Persons of low caste, illiterate or ill-bred people, கீழ்மக்கள். இழிசனர்வார்த்தை, s. The vulgar dialect. இழிசொல், s. Disgraceful or improper language, பழிச்சொல், of which four kinds are enumerated, viz.: 1. கோள் --குறளை, an invidious or injurious report, tale bearing, aspersion, slander, backbiting. 2. பொய்மொழி, lying, falsehood. 3. கடுஞ்சொல், harsh expressions, irritating language, scolding. 4. பயனில்சொல், nonsense, idle talk, vain expressions. 2. A vulgar word, இழிவானசொல். இழிஞர், s. Low caste people, the vulgar, the wretched, the miserable, debased, ignoble persons, சண்டாளர். இழிதகவு, v. noun. Inferiority, baseness, disgrace, degradation, meanness, இழிவு. 2. s. Poverty, destitution, எளிமை. இழிதிணை, s. The inferior class. See திணை. இழிந்தோர், s. The vulgar, the illiterate, low-bred persons, தாழ்ந்தோர். இழிபு, v. noun. Lowness, inferiority, meanness, degradation, baseness, தாழ்வு. 2. A hollow or ditch, any hole or cavity, depressions in land, பள்ளம். வெள்ளைக்கிழிபு, s. The less or minor species of வெண்பா verse. இழிவு, v. noun. Inferiority, lowness in rank or character, meanness, baseness, தாழ்வு. 2. Contempt, disgrace, dishonor, ignominy, abjectness, wretchedness, abasement, நிந்தை. 3. Diminution, decrease, a diminished quantity, deficiency, குறைவு. 4. A hollow or cavity, பள்ளம். 5. Decay, ruin, destruction, கேடு. 6. Fault, blemish, deviation from rule, misdemeanor, குற்றம். இழிவறிந்துண்பான். One who eats knowing the advantages of a spare diet. இழிவுபட, inf. To grow mean, base, vile, to deteriorate, be in disgrace, to be degraded, ஈனப்பட. இழிவுபடுத்த, inf. v. a. To degrade, disgrace, deteriorate, debase, தாழ்வுபடுத்த. இழிவுபண்ண, inf. To treat with contempt, நிந்தைசெய்ய. தனதுமரபினிழிவுயர்ச்சியின்றி. (Choosing a wife) from a family neither above nor below his rank. 34)

iẕu (p. 55) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To draw, pull, haul, drag, tug, drag to justice, to drag along the ground, ஈர்க்க. 2. To attract--as a magnet, ஊசி முதலியவீர்க்க. 3. To attract--as a snare, to entice, allure, inveigle, seduce, draw over to one's interests, வசமாக்க. 4. To strain, stretch, lengthen or attenuate by pulling, to draw out, நெடுகச்செய்ய. 5. To drag one into an affair, to cite, force one to court, &c., to drag one's name, &c. in support of an argument or practice, வலிகக. 6. To upbraid, drag out one's faults to view, to cast reproaches, insults, &c., புறத்திலிழு க்க. 7. To draw into, swallow up, engulph --as a stream, a whirl-pool, a whirl-wind, சுழித்துவாங்க. 7. To absorb--as a sponge, to absorb humors from the body, to draw-as a medicine or plaster, உறிஞ்ச. 8. To draw out the voice, lengthen the sound properly in singing, to draw in speaking, reading, &c., நீட்டிப்பேச. 9. To strain muscularly, distort the features or limbs in spasms, &c., to have the cramp, to be convulsed; in this sense, it is often used impersonally, வலியிழுக்க. 1. v. n. To linger, to be protracted, தாமதிக்க. இழுத்துப்பாடு. Sing, dwelling on the notes. தாய்வருமளவும்பேச்சிழுத்தாள். She protracted, continued the conversation, till her mother came. அந்தவழக்குவெகுபணமிழுத்துப்போட்டது. That law-suit has swallowed up a great deal of money. காரியமிழுத்துக்கொண்டுவருகின்றது. The affair is protracted, the business is delayed, being involved in various intricacies. இப்படியிழுத்துக்கொண்டுநின்றாலொன்றுந்தீராது. If you protract the matter so carelessly, you cannot expect a happy result. வழக்கிலேயிழுத்துவிட்டார்கள். They have dragged the matter into court. ஊர்க்காரியங்களையிழுக்க To make a long story, unnecessarily talking of other people's affairs. உன்காரியத்திலென்னையிழாதே. Do not draw me into your affairs, as a witness, party, &c. காரியத்திலிழுத்துக்கொண்டுநிற்கிறார்கள். They pull against or away from each other-as two parties, &c., they dissent, are unsettled (fig.), from the idea of two beasts tied together. இழுத்துக்கொண்டுவர, inf. To put off from day to day. என்கடனைத்தீர்க்காமலிழுத்துக்கொண்டுவருகிறான். He delays to pay the debt he owes me. இழுத்துப்பேச, inf. To speak drawlingly. இழுத்துவலிக்க, inf. To draw in a rope, or cord--as attached to a net, paper-kite, &c. இழுத்துவிட, inf. To put off, to protract, to delay, continue putting off and never fulfilling. 2. To bring into court, indict, prosecute, expose to the public. மடியைப்பற்றியிழுக்க, inf. To seize one's lap and pull him. காலிழுத்துநடக்க, inf. To trail the leg in walking--as a lame man. இழுபறி, s. A scuffle, a struggle, strife, squabble, வாது. இழுப்பு, v. noun. Drawing, pulling, draught, a pull, a tug, a twitch, இழுக் கை. 2. Attracting, attraction, allurement, inviting, engaging. 3. Distortion of the limbs or features by convulsions, cramp, &c. 4. Absorption. 5. Draught or force of a current, wind, &c. 6. Procrastination, tardiness, protraction, suspense, uncertainty. The meanings of the verb generally are applicable also to the verbal noun. அதிலே முன்னிழுப்புப்பின்னிழுப்பில்லை. In that matter, there can be no dispute one way or the other. இழுப்பறை, s. A box in a case, a drawer. இழுப்பாட்டம், s. Tardiness, protraction, procrastination. இழுப்பாட்டியம், s. [prov.] Procrastination, protraction, tardiness, delay--used instead of இழுப்பாட்டம். இழுப்பாணி, s. [prov.] A delayer, postponer, lingerer. 2. A moveable peg that fastens the yoke to the beam of the plough. இழுப்புண்ண, inf. To be drawn unwillingly--as some persons when they are compelled to attend court; to be forced or dragged into an affair. 2. To be allured, seduced, decoyed; to be diverted from the business in hand, be tempted, be led away by lust, be ensnared, சிக்கிக்கொள்ள. இழுப்புப்பறிப்புப்பட, inf. [vul.] To scuffle, struggle, contend. 2. To pull one another--as persons intoxicated, or in play. இழுவல், v. noun. [prov.] The act of drawing. 2. Putting off, lingering, delaying, postponing. 3. One who neglects his own affairs and busies himself with those of others. அவனொரு இழுவல். He is a busy-body, drawn into every one's business. இழுவை, v. noun. A being drawn, draught, இழுப்பு. 2. Any thing drawn-as a draught of thorns, timbers, fishes, &c., இழுக்கப்பட்டவை. 3. A long rope for draught, இழுக்கும்வடம். 4. The mark or point made on the ground by a thing drawn, சுவடு. இழுவைகண்டாலடிப்பார்க்கிறதேன்? When the track in which the thing was dragged is plain, why look for footsteps? 37)

uḷ (p. 67) s. The inside, the interior, that which is intrinsic, private, secret, esoteric, உள்ளிடம், 2. Mind, heart, soul, breast, உள்ளம். 3. Place, இடம். 4. As a nominal affix or postposition, it governs the dative and expresses in, within, among, of, out of, inner, interior, intrinsic, esoteric, ஏழ னுருபு. உள்ளிருந்தார்க்குத்தெரியுமுள்வருத்தம். Those of the household only are acquainted with its secret sorrows. உட்கரணம், s. The intellectual faculties. See இந்திரியம் and கரணம். உட்கருத்து, s. The inmost thought, the real purpose or motive, அகக்கருத்து. 2. Cordial affection, உட்பட்சம். 3. The intrinsic meaning of a passage, &c., கருத்துரை. உட்கருத்தாகப்பேச, inf. To speak with reservation. உட்களவு, s. Guile, deceit, treacherousness, insidiousness, உள்வஞ்சகம். உட்கள்ளம், s. Deep-seated viciousness, dissimulation, உள்வஞ்சகம். 2. Internal, or unsubdued disease, hidden humor or matter--as in a boil, கட்டியினுள் விஷம். உட்காங்கை, s. Caloric, latent heat, உட்சூடு. உட்காந்த, inf. To have internal heat causing emaciation; [ex காந்து.] உட்காய்ச்சல், s. Internal fever, அகச்சுரம். 2. Inward anger, rancor, malice, &c., உள்ளெரிப்பு. உட்கிராந்த, inf. To become emaciated by disease or otherwise. 2. To be firmly rooted--as disease. உட்குத்துப்புறவீச்சு, s. A species of hepatic complaint attended with convulsions, ஓர்நோய். உட்குயிர், s. The Deity regarded as the life, or identified with the life or soul of each individual, உள்ளுயிர். உட்குறிப்பு, s. Aim, object, intention, உள்ளக்குறிப்பு. உட்குற்றம், s. Innate depravity. See உட்பகை. உட்கூதல், s. Internal cold, chill, slight fever. உட்கை, s. Palm of the hand, உள்ளங்கை. 2. A person who is privy to, a secret hand--as in உள்ளுளவு. 3. Turning to the left in dancing or other movements, இடக்கைச்சுற்று. உட்கைச்சுற்று, s. Turning to the left, winding or turning back wards, or contrary to the sun. உட்கொள்ள, inf. To eat as a god, or great personage, உண்ண. 2. To take food that has been consecrated to a deity, தேவப்பிரசாதமுட்கொள்ள. 3. To take food, medicine, to swallow, take in, imbibeas the earth does the rain, &c., விழுங்க. 4. To receive into the mind, meditate, or reflect upon, மனதிற்கொள்ள. 5. To wish for an occurrence, or to express desires mentally--as a deity or holy sage (the thing desired instantly talking place), திருவுளங்கொள்ள. 6. To have a secret object in view, to have in view, உட்கருத. உட்கோபம், s. Interior anger, malice. உட்கோள், s. The will, determination, internal, or inmost thought, உட்கருத்து. 2. Wish of the heart. 3. Opinion, belief, tenet, கோட்பாடு. உட்சங்கம், s. A select society, a committee, அகச்சங்கம். உட்சட்டை, s. An inner vest or tunic. உட்சமயம், s. The six religious systems of the followers of Siva, அகச் சமயம். உட்சாடை, s. The real object of an affair, the real feeling of the heart, உட்கருத்து. 2. Exposure of secrets by one of a party by signs, இரகசியங்களைச்ச மிக்கையாலறிவிக்கை. 3. The meaning, thing, &c., told or known to one's own party and differing from that which is made known to others, குழூஉக்குறி. உட்சீலை, s. An under or inner cloth. 2. The lining of a garment. உட்சவர், s. An inner wall, அகச் சுவர். 2. The interior of a wall, சுவரி னிடை. உட்சுவரிருக்கப்புறச்சுவர்தீற்றுகிறது. To whitewash the outside wall while neglecting the inside; i. e. to be scrupulously exact in external conduct, while the heart is full of wickedness; to attend to things remote while those at hand are neglected. உட்சூத்திரம், s. The main spring in a machine, any internal power or operation concealed from view, மூலசூத் திரம். 2. A clue, or key to an affair, உள்ளுபாயம். 3. The main spring in a business, மூலகாரணம். 4. A skilfully contrived rule in numbers, &c., நுட்பமான வகை. 5. A short, compendious and subtle method of ascertaining, or effecting a thing, இலேசானவகை. 6. (fig.) Internal meaning of a passage, real object in view, உட்குறிப்பு. உட்செல்ல, inf. To enter, insinuate one's self, உள்ளேபோக. உட்டுளை, s. Hollowness--as of a pipe or tube. உட்டுளைப்பொருள், s. Any thing tubular. உட்டெளிவு, s. Cleverness of mind, freedom from doubt, profound knowledge, அகத்தெளிவு. 2. The clear part of the liquid--as poured off from the sediment, வடித்தசாறு. 3. Soundness--as in timber, &c., உள்வைரம். 4. Inner measurment. உட்டேட்டம், s. The secret object or pursuit, as differing from profession, or appearances, மனநாட்டம். 2. Property acquired and kept secretly, உட்சம்பத்து. உட்பகை, s. Internal enmity, hatred or grudge, rancor at heart with professions of friendship. 2. Internal, innate, or secret foes attached to the soul, causing actions, &c., காமாதிக்குற்றங் கள். (For the six உட்பகை, see பகை.) 3. Hatred of a king by his professed friends, civil conspiracy, அரசருட்பகை. எட்பகவன்சிறுமைத்தேயாயினுமுட்பகையுள்ள தாங்கேடு. Though the internal hatred be as the fragment of a grain of rape seed, the consequent evil may be very great. உட்பக்கம், s. Subject of investigation or deduction in things of a mental, mystic, or spiritual character. See பக்கம். உட்பட, inf. To enter, be within, or under--as in age, உள்ளாக. 2. To engage in, be concerned in, to be, or become one of a party, or community; to be involved in, to be subject to, to yield to, to be obedient to, உடன்பட. 3. adv. Together with, inclusive. மூன்றுவயதுக்குட்பட்டபிள்ளை. A child under three years of age. அதுட்பட. That inclusive. மோசத்துக்குட்பட, inf. To fall into danger. உட்படி, s. A make-weight, உட்ப டிக்கல். உட்படுத்த, inf. To cause to enter, to introduce, அகப்படுத்த. 2. To persuade, proselyte, bring one into, or over to one's party, மதத்துக்குள்ளாக்க. 3. To include, involve, entrap, ensnare, சிக்கப்பண்ண. உட்பத்தியம், s. Abstinence from venery as a regimen while taking medicine, &c.; sometimes அகப்பத்தியம். உட்பந்தி, s. The chief row or table of guests, அகப்பந்தி. உட்பலம், s. Property at command, திரவியபலம். 2. Friends, assistants, attendants, &c., துணைவர்பலம். 3. Forces, army, army in reserve, சேனாபலம். 4. Strength, firmness of body, hardness, strength from food, தேகபலம். உட்பற்று, s. Internal attachment, affections of the heart, &c. See அகப்பற்று. உட்பிரவேசம், s. Entrance. உட்பிரவேசிக்க, inf. To enter, உள்ளேபோக, உட்புக.--Note. This and the preceding word are in use, but not, it is thought, on good authority. உட்புக, inf. To enter, engage in. உட்புகுந்துபேச, inf. To make professions of friendship, kindness, concern, &c. உட்புரை, s. The hollow of a tube or pipe, உட்டுளை. 2. The small folds of a garment, உள்மடிப்பு. 3. (fig.) The secret of the matter, internal affair, அந்தரங்கம். உட்புறம், s. The inside, உட்பக்கம். உட்பொருள்--உள்ளர்த்தம், s. The real meaning, தாற்பரியம். 2. The hidden, or secret meaning, உட்கருத்து. சாஸ்திரத்தினுட்பொருள், s. The occult sense of a doctrine. உட்போட, inf. To coax, to wheedle, வசமாக்க. உண்ணா--உண்ணாக்கு, s. The uvula, அண்ணம்; [ex நா, tongue.] உண்ணாட்டம், s. The real or secret object of pursuit, உண்ணோக்கம். உண்ணீரம், s. The moisture within a body or thing; [ex உள், et நீரம்.] உண்ணோக்கல், v. noun. Contemplation. உண்மடை, s. The lower opening of a water-course. 2. Oblations, or offerings of fruits, betel, rice, pastries presented to ferocious deities, inside the temple, அகமடை. See மடை. உண்மட்டைநார், s. [prov.] The bark of the inner side of the palmyra stem, being the best for use. உண்மாசு, s. Corruption of mind-as உபமலம். உண்முடிச்சு, s. Treachery by which one inveigles another, (lit.) an inner knot, உட்கள்ளம். உள்யோசனை, s. Secret object, project, intention, &c., உள்ளாலோசனை. உள்வட்டம், s. Agio, premium in exchange of coins or other money for difference in value. (opp. to வட்டம்.) உள்வணக்கம், s. Mental worship, அகவணக்கம். உள்வயிரம், s. Interior firmness. 2. Malice, internal hatred. See வயிரம். உள்வயிரிப்பு, s. Internal hardness of a boil, &c., உள்வயிரம். 2. (fig.) [prov.] Property possessed, money in hand, கையிருப்பு. உள்வலிப்பு, v. noun. Inward pain or convulsion. உள்வழிகடந்தோன், s. God who is transcendent in knowledge and wisdom. (சது.) உள்வளைய, inf. To bend inwards, உட்கோண. உள்வளைந்தவன், s. A stooping person. உள்வளையல், v. noun. The share in the produce of a field which comes to the owner. உள்விழ, inf. To fall in, or with, join a party, &c., உள்ளாக. 2. To assume the appearance of friendship for a sinister object; to pretend kindness, காரியார்த்த மாய்ச்சிநேகிக்க. உள்விழுத்த, inf. v. a. To join a person on professions of friendship in order to deceive and entrap him, &c. உள்வினை, s. Malice, evil in the heart kept secret, long indulged, &c., உட்பகை. 2. Inherited fate, ஊழ்வினை. உள்வீச்சுச்சன்னி, s. See சன்னி. உள்வெக்கை, s. Internal heat of the system, உள்வெப்பு. உள்வெட்டு, s. The marks on a testing piece of gold, for trying the fineness of other pieces, from eight degrees and upwards, உரையாணியினுள் வெட்டு. 2. The higher kinds of gold, உயர்ந்தமாற்று. 3. Inner boards or planks exclusive of the slabs, அகவெட்டு. உள்வெண்டையம், s. A tinkling ring of brass, put as an ornament on the feet of horses mounted by kings and great men-comp. தண்டை, which is the name of another ornament made of silver and commonly placed upon the former. 2. A pad placed between a load and the back of an ox. உள்ளங்கம், s. Symmetry of mind, the internal property or quality. See அகத்துறுப்பு. உள்ளங்கால், s. The sole of the foot. உள்ளங்கை, s. The palm of the hand. உள்ளடங்கிப்போக, inf. To be shut, shut in, to be swallowed up. உள்ளடக்க, inf. To enclose, shut in, shut up in a place. 2. To conceal, to keep secret. உள்ளடக்கம், v. noun. Reservedness, reserve in intercourse. உள்ளடி, s. The sole of the foot, உள்ளங்கால். 2. [vul.] That which is secret, இரகசியம். 3. [prov.] Nearness, vicinity, neighborhood, சமீபம். 4. (fig.) One's own relations, one's own circle, நெருங்கியசுற்றம். உள்ளடியிலே--உள்ளடிக்குள், adv. At home, within doors, near home-spoken in cases of theft, mischief, &c. உள்ளறை, s. An inner room, closet, cabinet, உள்வீடு. 2. A division in a drawer, box, &c.; a separate cell, பெட்டி யினுள்ளறை. உள்ளன்--உள்ளான், s. One of the party or family, a domestic, உள்ளிருக்குமாள். 2. A near acquaintance. 3. The head or middle one of the oxen which thresh the corn. உள்ளனுங்கள்ளனுமாயிருக்கிறான். He is an enemy in the camp. 2. He is an inmate and yet a rogue. உள்ளாக, inf. To enter in, உட்புக. 2. To become subject to, கீழ்ப்பட. 3. To join a party, engage in, சேர. 4. To be involved, to become privy to an affair, உடன்பட. அவனுக்குள்ளானேன். I am on his side, I have taken his part. ஆக்கினைக்குள்ளானவன். One who is doomed to punishment. துரோகத்திற்குள்ளாகாதே. Be not a partaker in treacherous deeds. உள்ளாக்க, inf. To get a person into one's party, or to interest him in one's concerns, வசப்படுத்த. உள்ளாட, inf. To have intercourse with an enemy in order to effect an object, உள்ளேபயில. உள்ளாடுசத்துரு, s. An enemy in the camp, a snake in the grass, a treacherous companion, உட்பகைஞன். உள்ளாந்தரங்கம், s. Internal secrets, private matters. உள்ளாயிருக்க, inf. To be engaged or concerned in an affair, to be one of a party, உடன்பாடாயிருக்க. உள்ளாராய்வு, s. Deep research, thought, insight, a disposition to investigate profoundly, உள்ளாராய்ச்சி. உள்ளாள், s. One who belongs to a particular party, or family--a domestic. உள்ளிட, inf. To include, comprise, உள்ளடக்க. தொல்காப்பியரையுள்ளிட்டபன்னிருவர். The twelve including Tolkappiar. உள்ளிடை, s. Private affairs, intellectual concernments, உட்காரியம். உள்ளிடைபார்க்கவந்துநிற்கிறான். He has come to pry into our secrets, and to ascertain our private affairs. உள்ளிடையானவன், s. A species of simile brought in by the by, rather indistinctly, and without the usual terms of comparison--opposed to வெளிப்படையு வமம். உள்ளூர், s. The interior of a town, or country, ஊர்நடு. 2. One's own country, town--spoken of when residing in it, one's home, சொந்தவூர். உள்ளூரிலும்பிறவூரிலும். At home and abroad. உள்ளூர்ச்சரக்கு, s. aintu (p. 80) adj. or noun. Five, ஓரெண். ஐங்கணை, s. Five flowers feigned to be the arrows of Hindu cupid. (p.) ஐங்கணைக்கிழவன், Kama, the Hindu cupid, lit. lord of the five arrows, மன்மதன். (p.) ஐங்கரன், s. Ganesa, the five-handed. He is represented with an elephant's head, the proboscis or trunk is figuratively reckoned as a hand, விநாய கன். (p.) ஐங்கரற்கிளையோன், s. The five confidential servants of a king, அரசர்க்குக்குழு, viz.: 1. மந்தியர், ministers. 2. புரோகிதர், priests. 3. சேனாபதியர், generals. 4. தூதர், ambassadors. 5. சாரணர், spies. ஐங்கோணம், s. A pentagon, quinquangular figure, பஞ்சகோணம். ஐஞ்ஞூறு, s. Five-hundred, ஐந் நூறு. ஐந்தரு, s. The five trees in the world of Indra, பஞ்சதாரு, viz.: 1. அரிச்சந்த னம். 2. கற்பகம். 3. சந்தானம். 4. பாரிசாதம். 5. மந்தாரம். ஐந்தருநாதன், s. Indra, lord of the five trees in the celestial world, which yield whatever is asked or desired of them, இந்திரன். (p.) ஐந்தலைநாகம், s. A fabulous fiveheaded cobra, of which each head is supposed to contain a very precious gem. It is said to be found in mountainous districts and to have the power of flying. ஐந்தவித்தல், s. The control of the senses, ஐம்பொறியடக்கல். ஐந்தவித்தானாற் றலகல்விசும்புளார்கோமானிந்திர னேசாலுங்கரி. Indra, the god of the celestials, is a living monument of the wonderful power of those who control the five senses. (குறள்.) ஐந்தனுருபு, s. The fifth case (இன்) --one of the ablatives denoting procession, similitude, limit, and means, ஐந்தாம் வேற்றுமையுருபு. மலையின்வீழருவி. Torrents rushing from the mountains. காக்கையிற்கரிதுகளம்பழம். The களா berry is as black as a crow. மதுரையின்வடக்குச்சிதம்பரம். Sethamparam is situated to the north of Madura. கல்வியிற்பெரியன்கம்பன். Kampan made himself great by learning. ஐந்தாங்கால், s. The first post of the marriage shed when planted on the fifth day before the marriage, the third, fifth, or seventh day being chosen, as it may be lucky or otherwise, according to astrological calculation, மணப்பந்தரின் ஐந்தாங்கால். ஐந்தானம், s. The fifth lunar asterism, மிருகசீரிடம். (p.) ஐந்திணை, s. The five kinds of land, &c., ஐவகைநிலம். (See திணை.) 2. The closest friendship or love between husbands and wives, அன்புடைக்காமம். (p.) ஐந்திணைச்செய்யுள், s. A poem in which the five different kinds of soil are described and illustrated--one of the ninety-six பிரபந்தம், ஓர்பிரபந்தம். (p.) ஐந்துருவாணி, s. A shaft connecting the floors or stages of a car. See அ ஞ்சுருவாணி. ஐந்துறுப்படக்கி, s. The tortoise, ஆமை. (p.) ஐந்தொகைவினா, s. [in arithmetic.] The rule of five or double rule of three, ஓர்வகையெண்வினா. ஐந்தொழில், s. The five divine operations, பஞ்சகிருத்தியம், viz.: 1. சிருஷ்டி, creation or reproduction. 2. ஸ்திதி, preservation. 3. சங்காரம், destruction, reduction of things to their primitive elements. 4. திரோபவம், that act of the deity by which he conceals from the sentient soul its future destiny for purposes of moral discipline; concealing, obscuring; i. e. involving the soul in ignorance or illusion by means of magic. 5. அனுக்கிரகம், grace, the various means adopted for the deliverance of the soul from the power of illusion and consequent transmigrations. See கிருத்தியம். ஐமீன், s. The thirteenth lunar asterism, அத்தநாள். (p.) ஐமுகன்--ஐயானனன், s. Siva, the five-faced, சிவன். (p.) ஐமுகாஸ்திரம், s. A five-pointed arrow, பஞ்சமுகாஸ்திரம். (p.) ஐம்பது, s. The hair of a female, மகளிர்கூந்தல். See பால். (p.) ஐம்புலம்--ஐம்புலன், s. The five senses, பஞ்சவிஷயம். ஐம்புலத்தடங்கான், s. He who is not comprehensible by the five senses-God, கடவுள். (p.) ஐம்புலம்வென்றோர், s. Ascetics, holy persons, முனிவர். (p.) ஐம்புலனடக்கல். Subjugation of the five senses. ஐம்புலனுகர்ச்சியினிறப்பன, s. The five kinds of creatures which perish by means of the senses, viz.: 1. சுவையரல்--மீன், fish, by the taste in catching at the bait. 2. நாற்றத்தால்-வண்டு, beetles, by the smell. 3. ஊற்றினால்-யானை, elephants, by copulation. 4. ஓசையால்-அசுணம், a species of bird by harsh sounds. 5. ஒளியால்-விட்டில், a species of insect, attracted by the light. ஐம்புலன்விழையான், s. [commonly ஐவேலி.] A creeping plant whose leaf is supposed to resemble the fingers, a pentadactyle, ஓர்கொடி, Bryonia laciniosa, L.-Note. In this plant the god Siva is said to have concealed himself when pursued by பஸ்மாசுரன், who had, by penance, obtained from him, as a boon, power to destroy all on whose head he should place his hand. ஐவிரல், s. oṭukku (p. 81) கிறேன், ஒடுக்கினேன், வே ன், ஒடுக்க, v. a. To reduce, compress, bring into a narrower compass, condense, to lessen, bring down--as another's pride, to keep down, keep under, அடக்க. 2. To press, oppress, tyrannize, vex, வருத்த. 3. To reduce the system by medicine or a sparing diet, உடம்பையொடுக்க. 4. To involve one in another--as the elements, cause to disappear--as the worlds, &c., at the close of an age, பூதங்களைலயிக்கச்செய்ய. 5. To close, to finish as a work, the harvest, &c., முடிக்க. 6. To pack in, to put in, to put things close in a bag, a box or other receptacle, செறிக்க. உலகப்பற்றையொவ்வொன்றாயொடுக்க. To relinquish worldly attachments one by one. ஒடுக்கிக்கட்ட, inf. To compress and tie a thing close. 2. To tuck up the skirts and fasten the end behind-as in wet weather. 3. To hem an ola basket, fan, &c. ஒடக்கித்தட்ட, inf. To make a metal utensil thicker and narrower by beating. ஒடுக்கித்தைக்க, inf. To make a garment smaller. ஒடுக்கிவெட்ட, inf. To hew timber reducing the breadth. ஒடுக்குவாய், s. Distorted mouth, கோணல்வாய். வீட்டையொடுக்கிக்கட்ட, inf. To build a house narrow. உடம்பையொடுக்க, inf. To reduce the body by eating sparingly. 2. To contract the body--as a tiger, a cat, &c., to reduce the body to a smaller compass --as in a leaping, sneaking, or creeping posture. செலவையொடுக்க--செலவையொ டுக்கிப்பிடிக்க. inf. To retrench expenses. 2. To live frugally, sparingly, &c. வயிற்றையொடுக்க, inf. To restrain the appetite, to reduce the quantity of food in order to save money. புலனையொடுக்க, inf. To restrain the senses--as ascetics or otherwise; to mortify the senses, passions, &c. 2. To call home the thoughts and fix them on divine things. ஒடுக்கு, v. noun. Contracting, closing, compression, narrowness, அடக் கம். 2. s. A corner to creep into, இடுக்கு. ஒடுக்கிடம், s. A corner, a narrow or confined place, மூலை. 2. A recess, a hiding place, மறைவிடம். ஒடுக்குச்சீட்டு--ஒடுக்குத்துண்டு, s. A receipt given by government for money, வரிச்சீட்டு. பணவொடுக்கு, v. noun. [prov.] A remittance of money. 48)

oṭungku (p. 81) கிறேன், ஒடுங்கினேன், வே ன், ஒடுங்க, v. n. To shrink, become reduced, compressed, closed, contracted, narrow, to lessen, to abate, crouch, lie within a small compass, diminish, grow less--as a globe from the centre to the poles, அடங்க. 2. To be restrained--as the senses, desires, &c., புலனொங்க. 3. To give place, recede, pass on one side--as in meeting a superior; to shrink within one's self, showing reverence, taking off the mantle, turban, sandals, &c.; to creep along sideways, ஒதுங்க. 4. To be reduced in circumstances, power, prosperity, in show, in expenditure, in the mental or bodily faculties, energies, &c., to grow lean, be reduced in size, whether by disease, want of food, or otherwise, குறைய. 5. To cease-as noise, bustle, stir, &c., அமைய. 6. To sink or retire--as the soul in sleep, fainting, or through the different stages at death, சோர. 7. To become dissolved or involved one within another--as the elements, worlds, &c., till all is absorbed in the deity, பூதங்களொடுங்க. 8. To end, terminate, cease, முடிய. 9. To obey, submit, கீழ்ப்படிய. 1. To be concealed, பதுங்க. 11. To be packed, stowed away, செறிய. 12. To be retrenched, சுருங்க. 13. To disappear, become absorbed, dissolved--as salt in water, &c., கரைய. 14. To grow dim-as a light, a heavenly body, &c., to become extinct--as light by passing into its previous elements or ether, ஒளிமழுங்க. மாடுநுகத்தைக்கண்டொடுங்குகிறது. The ox has assumed a sickly appearance; or it shrinks at the sight of the yoke. ஊணொடுங்கவீணொடுங்கும். If his food be reduced, his dissipation will cease. உலகுதோன்றினமுறையேயொடுங்கும். The world will be reduced to its primeval elements in the order in which it was educed. ஆளொடுங்கினவேளைபார்த்துவந்தான். He watched for an opportunity and came when all was still (for plunder, &c.). கலிமுதிரமுதிரப்பெரியவர்களொடுங்கிவிட்டார்கள்... As the iron age advances, the great are reduced. ஒடுங்கலில்பல்கலை. The various sciences which are unlimited. குளிராலொடுங்க, inf. To shrink with cold. ஒடுங்கி, s. A tortoise, ஆமை. ஒடுக்கம், v. noun. Narrowness, straitness, closeness, வழியொடுக்கம். 2. Contraction into itself--as the tortoise, an elastic substance, &c., சுருங்குகை. 3. Retirement within doors, abatement, concealment by stooping and creeping along--as a man to shoot, or a tiger to spring on its prey, &c., பதுங்குகை. 4. Suppression, contraction, reduction, நெருக்கம். 5. Reverence, self-restraint, modesty, அ டக்கம். 6. Involution--as of the elements one into another, absorption, dissolution, disappearance--as of salt in water, ஒன்றிலொன்றடங்குகை. 7. Cessation (of noise, bustle, stir--as by night in time of epidemics, &c.), quietude, calmness, stillness, அமைவு. 8. Sinking as the soul through its different stages at death, gradual reduction--as of circumstances, the powers of the body by age, &c., பலமுதலியவொடுங்குகை. 9. s. End, close, termination, முடிவு. ஒடுக்கத்திலேயொன்றுமில்லை. At the end nothing (of earth) will accompany us, remain, avail, &c. அவனுக்குச்சாப்பாடொடுக்கமாய்ப்போயிற்று. The business, provision, ceremony, &c., is on a small scale. ஒடுக்கநாள், s. A day of distress. ஒடுக்கமில்லாதவன், s. One who does not restrain himself, his passions, desires, &c. 2. One who does not pay proper respect to his superiors. ஒடுக்கம்பார்த்துவர, inf. To attack a house, a city, when in a defenceless state, or by night when all are asleep. ஒடுக்கவணக்கம், s. Modest deportment, reverence, veneration. பனியொடுக்கம், s. The fall of heavy dew when all is still. காற்றொடுக்கம், s. A calm, a lull, absence of wind. புலனொடுக்கம், s. Restraint of the senses. 2. The contract of betrothing in which the parties or their friends bind themselves under penalty to consummate the marriage. கலியாணமண்டபம், s. A hall for a splendid marriage ceremony. கலியாணமுடிக்க, inf. To marry. கலியாணமெழுத, inf. [prov.] To register a marriage. கலியாணம்பண்ண, inf. To marry, solemnize a wedding. 2. The operations of the deity--popularity in the characters of creator, preserver and destroyer; but in the mystic parts of the Agama system, the works of obscuring and enlightening the soul are superadded. Wils. p. 243. KRUTYA. தன்கிருத்தியந்தான்பார்க்கவேண்டும். Each one must perform his appropriate duties, personal, social, relative, civil, &c. கிருத்தியகர்த்தா, s. An operating deity, or a god who performs either of the five great operations in the universe. கிருத்தியகர்த்தாக்கள், s. (pl.) Agents who carry on operations in the universe; also, those of the விஞ்ஞானகலர் and பிர ளயாகலர் class of souls that have advanced so as to be cleansed from மலம், and permitted to be operative. கிருத்தியப்பிழை, s. Misdeeds, misbehaviour. 2. Failure or transgression in the performance of prescribed rites, ceremonies or other duties. கிருத்தியமில்லாதவன், s. One who does not practise the rites of the religion. ஒருகிருத்தியமுமில்லாதவன். One unemployed. கிருத்தியமுடிக்க, inf. To perform prescribed duties--as religious rites, ceremonies, &c. கிருத்தியம்பண்ண--கிருத்தியம்நடத்த inf. To perform the works of creation, &c..--as a deity, ஐந்தொழில்செய்ய. The direct object of this work is fancied to be; 1. To cleanse the soul from its moral defilements. 2. To cause it to experience the fruit of former actions. 3. To give it a temporary rest. 4. To produce an equilibrium between the good and evil actions of the soul. 5. To emancipate it from the பாசம் entanglements. (சிவ. சி.) 2. To perform works, rites, &c., சடங்குசெய்ய. 3. To perform the duties of one's calling, தொழில்செய்ய. 4. To perform the funeral rites for a deceased ancestor, உத்தரகிரியைசெய்ய. பஞ்சகிருத்தியம், s. The five operations of deity under various names, forms and modifications, viz.: 1st. சிருட்டி or படை த்தல், the work of creating or transforming matter, evolving it from the primitive Maya, producing words, furnishing the soul with its appropriate body, according to its actions in a previous birth, &c. In the popular system, this office is ascribed to Brahma. 2d.திதி or காத்தல், the work of preserving, usually ascribed to Vishnu. 3d. சங்காரம் or அழித்தல், the work of destroying, or of reducing the universe to the primitive Maya, through numerous involutions, --as earth into water, water into fire, &c. This office is ascribed to உருத்தி ரன், who by his worshippers is identified with Siva whom they consider supreme. 4th. திரோபவம் or மறைத்தல், the work of obscuration, or the veiling of the soul in moral darkness, and beclouding the understanding, so that the divine being cannot be perceived, while the mind attracted and illuded by visible and sensual objects, is excited to the performance of new actions, by which absolute liberation from பாசம் entanglements is prevented, and connection with Maya and its consequent transmigrations--except where the sanchita (சஞ்சிதம்) of former births is exhausted --is indefinitely prolonged. This is ascribed to மயேச்சுரன். 5th. அனுக்கிரகம் or அருளல், this is a work of benevolence as exerted for the benefit of the soul in furnishing it with appropriate bodies by which to expiate the guilt of former actions, though obscuring it with திரோ பவம், while it is thus working itself clear, at length withdrawing the veil and showing it that all visible and sensual objects are illusory and deceptive; also annihilating the passions and exciting disgust toward the objects of sense, and utter indifference to all mundane affairs, and thus causing entire cessation from physical and moral actions, and maturing it for final emancipation, and union with the Supreme. It is ascribed to சதாசிவம். சமுசாரகிருத்தியம், s. Domestic affairs, household business. 10) *
