ari (p. 23) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To sift, separate larger and smaller bodies with the hand, sieve, riddle, &c., கொ ழிக்க. 2. To separate rubbish from dried leaves with the hand, in order to gather the latter for fuel, சருகரிக்க. 3. To beat and wash away, as flowing water on sand, or waves on the shore, washing away the earth and leaving the pebbles, &c. behind, நீர்மணலையரிக்க. 4. A teasing person, (lit.) a gnawing white ant. அரிபிளவை, s. A cancerous formation, constantly eating into the flesh, ஓர்வகைப்பரு. அரிபுழு, s. Worms constantly grawing and causing itching irritation, &c. (c.) அரிபெட்டி, s. A sieve or cullender, சல்லடை. அரிமணல், s. Fine sand. அரிப்பு, v. noun. Sifting, separating. 2. Disgraceful or improper language, பழிச்சொல், of which four kinds are enumerated, viz.: 1. கோள் --குறளை, an invidious or injurious report, tale bearing, aspersion, slander, backbiting. 2. பொய்மொழி, lying, falsehood. 3. கடுஞ்சொல், harsh expressions, irritating language, scolding. 4. பயனில்சொல், nonsense, idle talk, vain expressions. 2. A vulgar word, இழிவானசொல். இழிஞர், s. Low caste people, the vulgar, the wretched, the miserable, debased, ignoble persons, சண்டாளர். இழிதகவு, v. noun. Inferiority, baseness, disgrace, degradation, meanness, இழிவு. 2. s. Poverty, destitution, எளிமை. இழிதிணை, s. The inferior class. See திணை. இழிந்தோர், s. The vulgar, the illiterate, low-bred persons, தாழ்ந்தோர். இழிபு, v. noun. Lowness, inferiority, meanness, degradation, baseness, தாழ்வு. 2. A hollow or ditch, any hole or cavity, depressions in land, பள்ளம். வெள்ளைக்கிழிபு, s. The less or minor species of வெண்பா verse. இழிவு, v. noun. Inferiority, lowness in rank or character, meanness, baseness, தாழ்வு. 2. Contempt, disgrace, dishonor, ignominy, abjectness, wretchedness, abasement, நிந்தை. 3. Diminution, decrease, a diminished quantity, deficiency, குறைவு. 4. A hollow or cavity, பள்ளம். 5. Decay, ruin, destruction, கேடு. 6. Fault, blemish, deviation from rule, misdemeanor, குற்றம். இழிவறிந்துண்பான். One who eats knowing the advantages of a spare diet. இழிவுபட, inf. To grow mean, base, vile, to deteriorate, be in disgrace, to be degraded, ஈனப்பட. இழிவுபடுத்த, inf. v. a. To degrade, disgrace, deteriorate, debase, தாழ்வுபடுத்த. இழிவுபண்ண, inf. To treat with contempt, நிந்தைசெய்ய. தனதுமரபினிழிவுயர்ச்சியின்றி. (Choosing a wife) from a family neither above nor below his rank. 34)

uṟuttu (p. 68) கிறேன், உறுத்தினேன், வே ன், உறுத்த, v. a. To cause to be, to originate, உண்டாக்க. 2. To form, constitute, ஏற்படுத்த. 3. To insert, introduce, சேர்க்க. 4. To render, produce, வருவிக்க. 5. To erect, construct, நாட்ட. 6. To bring in contact, clap together, make an impression on the mind, தாக்க. 7. To cause smarting irritation, &c. --as dust in the eye, a rough or uneven surface to one sitting, or lying down from the protrusion of his bones, வருத்த. 8. To produce mental pain--as by a sarcastic remark, &c., மனதிலுறுத்த.--Note. The meanings of this word are commonly determined by the noun prefixed to it, and it may generally be construed by the form to cause to be, &c. See எலும்புறுத்த, below. புரவிபண்ணுறுத்திடுவார். To speak so as to make an impression on the mind. 2. To speak with energy, earnestness, &c. எலும்புறுத்த, inf. To cause a smarting irritation--as the bones by being protruded. துன்புறுத்த, inf. To cause suffering. For many words compounded with this verb, such as கண்ணுறுத்த, பயமுறுத்த, மனமுறு த்த, வற்புறுத்த, &c., see in their respective places. 2)

eri (p. 73) கிறது, ந்தது, யும், எரிய, v. n. To glow, shine, give light, பிரகாசிக்க. 2. To burn, ignite; to be injured, or consumed by fire, to be scorched, to flame, அழல. 3. To burn--as a sore, or fever; to smart, to be inflamed, புண்முதலியவெரிய. 4. To be envious, jealous, to fret, be peevish, பொறா மைகொள்ள. 6. To burn as the stomach with hunger, வயிறெரிய. 7. My bowels are inflamed for food. 2. I am in distress, yearning, &c. அவன்பட்டதை நினைக்கிறபொழுது என்வயிறெரிகிற து. My bowels are inflamed when I think of what he suffered. கணகணென்றெரிகிறது. It burns with excessive heat. அவனெரிபொரியென்றுவிழுகிறான். He breaks out with rage and fury, lit. saying, Burn him, fry him. எரிகரும்பு, s. Fagots, விறகு. (c.) எரிகுடல், s. A canine appetite, எரிவயிறு. (c.) எரிகுடலன், s. One who is always craving for food, தீபனமுள்ளவன். எரிகுன்மம், s. A stomachic disease, excessive heat, head-ache, &c., ஓர்நோய். எரிகொள்ளி, s. A fire-brand, கொள்ளிக்கட்டை. எரிசினம், s. Burning anger, கடுங் கோபம். எரிநரகம், s. The burning hell, ஓர்நரகம்--in distinction from others. எரிபடுவன், s. A burning ulcer or cancer, பிளவை. எரிபந்தம், s. A burning torch, a flambeau, தீவர்த்தி. 2. A kind of burning sensation all over the system from disease, எரிச்சல். எரிபிடாரி, s. An enraged or furious demoness, எரிதுர்க்கை. 2. A peevish, or fretful person-spoken disparagingly, எரிச்சலுடையவள். எரிபுழு, s. A kind of brownish, yellow caterpillar, the sight of which on leaving home, &c., is regarded as propitious, கம்பளப்பூச்சியினோர்வகை. எரிபூச்சி, s. A flying insect which, on contact, emits moisture that causes a burning smart and a discoloring of the skin, ஓர்பூச்சி. எரிமணி, s. Sparkling jewels, bright gems, பிரகாசமுள்ளமணி. எரிமுகி, s. A tree, the milk of whose seeds is pungent and caustic, and being indelible, is used in marking, சேங் கொட்டைமரம், Semicarpus anacardium. எரியவிழிக்க, inf. To look fiercely having the eyes flaming with rage, கோ பத்தோடுபார்க்க. எரிவண்டு, s. The Mylabris or blistering beetle, ஓர்வகைவண்டு. 2. An insect which strikes against the eye-ball inducing severe smarting, கண்ணிலடிக்கும் வண்டு. எரிவந்தம், s. A burning sensation in the body, எரிபந்தம். 2. (Met.) Anger, wrath, எரிச்சல். எரிவனம், s. The five places are: 1. ஆட் சித்தானம், when the planet presides, (See under ஆள், v.) 2. உச்சதானம். when the sun is in Aries, the Moon in Taurus, Mars in Capricornus, Mercury in Virgo. This is a very auspicious conjunction, four times better than the first. 3. நீசத் தானம், the position of the planets in the seventh place from the auspicious, உச் சம், and thought to be very bad. 4. நட் புத்தானம், the benign position of the planets. (See under நட்பு.) 5. பசைத்தானம். the malign position, causing continual hatred. See under பகை. தானம், 12. The twelve astrological signs are: 1. சென்மஸ்தானம், the rising sign at birth, having reference to fortune generally, according to the character and influence of the planets that may be in it. 2. வாக்குஸ்தானம், திரவியஸ் தானம், குடும்பஸ்தானம், the second sign at birth as applying to the powers of speech, influence, learning, wife, &c. 3. சகோதரஸ்தானம், the third, referring to brothers and sisters whether there will be any, the good or evil they will do to the person, or he to them. 4. மாதுருஸ்தானம், மித்துருஸ்தானம், வாகனஸ்தானம், the forth, referring to the life of the mother, or friends. 5. புத்திரஸ்தானம், the fifth regards future offspring. 6. சத்துருஸ்தானம், உரோகஸ்தானம், the sixth shows whether the person will have enemies, and the evils to which he will be liable. 7. களத்திரஸ்தானம், குடும்பஸ்தானம், the seventh, referring to a wife and settlement in life. 8. மிருத்துஸ்தானம், ஆ யுஸ்தானம், the eighth, the limit of life. 9. தருமஸ்தானம், புண்ணியஸ்தானம், the ninth, referring to the extent of the person's liberality, &c. 1. கருமஸ்தானம், the tenth, conduct, character good or bad, &c. 11. இலாபஸ்தானம், பாக்கியஸ்தானம், the eleventh income, acquisition, wealth prosperity. 12. செலவுஸ்தானம், வியஸ்தா னம், the twelfth, prodigality or penuriousness, &c. தானக்கை, s. [prov.] Any vital part of the body, உயிர்நிலை. 2. Favorable situation of a place, தகுந்தஇடம். தானத்தான், s. A pujari in a Saiva temple, ஸ்தானீகன். 2. A hereditary chief, தலைமைக்காரன். தானப்புழு, s. Worms in the anus, causing irritation or itching. See திமி ரிப்பூச்சி. தானப்புழுக்கிண்ட, inf. To gnaw as worms in the anus, &c. [prov.] தானப்பொருத்தம், s. The fourth of ten items to be regarded in the choice of the first word of a poem--being the correspondence of its initial letter, with any of the five arbitrary divisions in which the initial of the name of the hero falls. The five தானம் are, 1. பாலன். 2. குமரன். 3. அரசன். 4. விருத்தன். 5. மரணம். which denote the five stages of life. [ Gov. usage.] நீர்ப்பிடி-நீர்ப்பிடிப்பு, v. noun. Quantity of water. 2. Watery humors in the body, juiciness of some kinds of fruit or vegetables. See தண்ணீர்ப்பிடி. நீர்ப்பிரமியம், s. Strangury, especially of men. See நீர்ப்பாடு. நீர்ப்பிளவை, s. A kind of ulcer. See பிளவை. நீர்ப்பீனசம், s. A kind of inflammation in the head, with offensive discharges of mucus. See பீனசம். நீர்ப்படையன், s. A poisonous kind of water-snake, ஓர்பாம்பு. நீர்ப்பூ, s. One of the four kinds of flowers, a water-flower, நால்வகைபபூவி னொன்று. நீர்ப்பூலா--நீர்ப்பூல், s. A kind of shrub, a species of the பூல், Phyllanthus multiflorus. Willd. நீர்ப்பெருக்கு, v. noun Flow of tide, சலப்பெருக்கு. நீர்மட்டம், s. Water-level. நீர்மறிப்பு, v. noun. Stoppage of urine, நீரடைப்பு. நீர்மாங்காய், s. Managoes soaked in water, and dried, forming a kind of pickle, மாங்காயடைகாய். நீர்மீட்டான்--நீர்விட்டான், appel. n. A kind of medicinal creeper. See தண்ணீர் விட்டான். நீர்முகம், s. A ford, a place in a river for bathing, getting water, &c., இறங்கு துறை. 2. Head of the tide or current at the mouth of a river, where it flows into the sea, நீர்ப்பெருக்கின்முனை. (p.) நீர்முட்ட, inf. To make water (urine) சிறுநீர்முட்ட. (School usage.) 2. To be short of water. நீர்முட்டுகிறகண்கள். Watery eyes. நீர்முள்ளி, s. One of the முள்ளி plants, Barleria longifolia. L. நீர்மேலெழுத்து, s. An inscription on the water. See எழுத்து. நீர்மேல்நெருப்பு, s. A kind of herb, cool to the touch, but causing blisters afterwards, கல்லுருவி, Ammonia debilis, also used figuratively to persons. நீர்மோர், s. Thin watery butter-milk, with other ingredients, used as a beverage. நீர்வஞ்சி, s. A kind of ratan, ஓர்வகை ப்பிரம்பு. நீர்வண்டு, s. A water-fly. நீர்வல்லி, s. The betel-creeper, வெற் றிலைக்கொடி. நீர்வழுக்கை, s. A kind of water-plant, ஓர்நீர்ப்பூடு, Myriophyllum foliosum, L. நீர்வளம், s. Abundance of water, நீர் நிறைவு. நீர்வள்ளி, s. A medicinal creeper, தண் நீர்மீட்டான். 2. As நீர்வல்லி. நீர்வற்ற, inf. To dry up, as water, &c. நீர்வற்றம், v. noun. Ebb of tide. நீர்வற்றல், s. Any thing in which the juice is evaporated by drying, சாரம்வற்றி யது. நீர்வாத்து, s. A kind of fen-duck, or water-bird, ஓர்தாரா, Anas boschos. நீர்வாரம், s. Rice that grows by tanks or in marshy ground, குளநெல். Compare நீவாரம். நீர்வாழுஞ்சாதி, s. Aquatic creatures, நீர்வாழ்வன. 2. Fishermen, those who live by the sea, நெய்தனிலமாக்கள். நீர்வாழ்வன, appel. n. [pl.] Creatures that live in water, aquatics. நீர்விட்டான், s. See நீர்மீட்டான். நீர்விட்டுப்போக, inf. To become watery, thin, &c., by keeping too long, by fermentation, as honey, நீர்த்துப்போக. நீர்விழ, inf. To exist as water in a gem, giving it lustre; shade of color, ரத்னகாந்திதளம்ப. நீர்விளையாட, inf. To play in water. நீர்வேட்கை, v. noun. Thirst, நீர்த்தாகம். 266)
