aṭai (p. 8) s. Resort, attaining to, அ டுத்தல். 2. A kind of cake, wafer, ஓர்பணிகா ரம். 3. Cake or bread in general அப்பவருக் கம். 4. Incubation, அவயம். 5. A leaf, இலை. 6. Gravity, weight, கனம். 7. A slight support or prop, தாங்கி. 8. [in grammar.] A prefix, qualifying word, or clause, adjunct, accompaniment, அடைமொழி. In this meaning it includes உரிச்சொல் or adjectives and adverbs. (p.) 9. A pledge, கொதுவை. 1. Tribute, the king's proportion of the produce of the land whether one-sixth or one-tenth, or otherwise, நிலவிறை. (c.) அடைகாக்க--அடைகிடக்க, inf. To sit on eggs, incubate. அடைகாய், s. Betel and areca nut. அடைகொடுக்க, inf. To render the kings's share of the produce. அடைகோழி, s. A hen that sits on eggs. அடைக்காய், s. Areca nut. அடைக்குத்தகை, s. [prov.] Revenue from grain as farmed out by government. அடைச்சீட்டு, s. [prov.] Receipt for the payment of tithe or tax. அடைப்பை, s. A betel pouch, வெற் றிலைப்பை. அடைப்பைக்காரன், s. The servant who carries the betel pouch, &c. of a great person. அடையடுத்தவாகுபெயர், s. A species of metonymy, as, மருக்கொழுந்துநட் டான், he planted a twig of the absinthium, that is, the plant itself. 19)

atiru (p. 11) --அதிர், கிறேன், அதிர்ந் தேன், வேன், அதிர, v. n. To shake, quake, as by an earthquake, he fall of a tree, or the rolling of chariots, கம்பிக்க. 2. To be startled, alarmed as by the sound of a cannon, the report of thieves, the prevalence of an epidemic, &c., thrill, நடுங்க. 3. To resound attended with a shock, as by thunder, by an earthquake; to sound as a drum, &c., reverberate, vibrate, roar as beasts, tinckle as bells or ornaments, ஆர வாரிக்க. பூமியதிரநடவாதபுண்ணியவான். A good man, one who is careful not to give offence. அதிர்குரல்முரசம். The loud sounding drum. பூமியதிரல், v. noun. An earthquake, trembling of the earth. அதிர், v. noun. Commotion, shaking, trembling, fear, நடுக்கம், 2. s. Sound, ஒலி. அதிர்வெடி--அதிர்வேட்டு, s. The explosion or report of small cannons, &c., to excite alarm. 2. (prov.) The cannon itself. அதிர்ச்சி, v. noun. Quaking, shaking, trembling as of the earth by an earthquake, thunder, or the fall of a tree &c., அசைவு. 2. Resonance, repercussion, concussion, reverberation, எதிரொலி. 3. Agitation, stir, நடுக்கம். 4. A great noise, a loud report, an explosion, பேரொலி. அதிர்ப்பு, v. noun. aẕi (p. 32) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், அழிய, v. n. To decay, degenerate, perish, be corrupted, ruined, wasted, blighted, effaced, obliterated, abolished, demolished, annihilated, கெட. 2. To fail (as a promise), be frustrated as a hope, &c., be refuted, தவற. அழிகரு, s. Abortion, கருவழிவு. அழிகுட்டி, s. A miscarriage, an abortion applied chiefly to brutes--the casting of the young, வயிற்றில்மரித்தது. அழிந்தோரைநிறுத்தல், v. noun. One of the eight constituent parts of virtue, அறத்துறுப்பு. அழிபுண், s. A foul ulcer, ஆறாப் புண். (M. Dic.) அழிமதி, s. Waste, extravagance, malicious intention, கெடுபுத்தி. அழிமுதல், s. Waste of property, as of capital, principal, &c. முதலழிவு. அழிம்பு, s. [vul.] The nin-payment of a debt or the non-restoration of another's property from dishonest motives, புரட்டு. 2. Ruin, devastation, injury, damage, கேடு. என்னுடையமைக்கழிம்புபேசுகிறான். He talks of destroying my property. அழிம்புசெய்ய, inf. To damage a thing. 2. To debauch a woman. அழிம்பன், s. [vul.] A spendthrift, a profligate, ஊதாரி. 2. One who makes excuses for not paying debts, restoring property, &c., புரட்டன். அழியாதபத்தினி, s. A name of D'hurupary, the wife of the Pandu princes. அழியாமுதல், s. Property devoted or entailed in perpetuity to a temple or other charity, நிலையான ஆஸ்தி. 2. God, கடவுள். அழியாமை, neg. v. noun. Incorruption, immortality, imperishableness, கெடாமை. அழிவழக்கு, s. An unjust lawsuit, a groundless prosecution, a frivolous or groundless defence, a lost lawsuit, அநி யாயவழக்கு. கற்பழியாதபெண், s. A pure virgin. அழிகை, v. noun. Destruction, decay, ruin, சிதைவு. அழிவு, v. noun. Decay, injury, ruin, loss, desolation, the act of perishing. கேடு. 2. That which has perished of itself, கெட்டது. 3. Fault, immorality, (in a restricted sense,) deviation from rule, குற்றம். அன்றுகண்டமேனிக்கழிவில்லை. Just the same appearance as before. அழிவின்மை, neg. v. noun. Freedom from decay. அழிவுகாலம், s. The time of a universal deluge and destruction at the end of an age, யுகமுடிவு. கடையழிதல், v. noun. Suffering extremely. நிறையழிதல், v. noun. Being disheartened, dispirited, without hope. 7)

āl (p. 43) s. That species of banian tree which casts roots from its branches-deemed sacred to Vishnu, and commonly regarded as the abode of goblins. Its roots form one of the kinds of sacrificial fuel, ஆலமரம், Ficus indica, L. (c.) ஆல்போற்றழைத்து அறுகுபோல்வேரூன்றி மூங்கில் போற்சுற்ற முசியாமல் வாழ்ந்திருப்பீர். May you flourish as a banian tree, put forth roots and spread as the creeping stems of the arugu grass, and prosper being encircled by kinsmen as thickly crowded bamboos. ஆலமர்கடவுள், s. Siva, சிவன். (p.) ஆலம்விழுது, s. The roots growing down from the branches of the banian tree. ஆலின்மேற்புல்லுருவி or புல்லூரி, s. A mistletoe that destroys the tree on which it grows, even the ஆல், which otherwise is never known to die, as it throws down its roots and continues to spread itself. கல்லால்--குறுவால்--சிற்றால், s. The இத்தி tree, Ficus virens. (p.) 5)

iṭm (p. 45) . A common form of the seventh or locative case--expressing in, on, with, within, ஏழனுருபு. It also implies to, after verbs of motion. As a case, it is itself either declined or not.--Note. According to நன்னூல், the seventh case expresses the locality of things; it also indicates place, time, component parts, qualities and actions, the relation to the persons or things indicated, whether as naturally belonging to them, or as distinct. மணியிடத்தொளி. The lustre in or of the gem. கையினிடத்துக்கடகம். A bracelet on the hand. பனையினிடத்தன்றில். The அன்றில் bird on the palmyra. என்னிடத்து--என்னிடம். In or with me. 67)

iyai (p. 48) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. n. [The mere poetic form for இசை.] To join, unite, agree, be proper for, agreeable to &c., பொருந்த. இயைய, inf. Used also as a term of comparison, உவமையுருபு. இயைபு, v. noun. Union, agreement, இசைவு. 2. Fitness, worthiness, &c., for undertaking the study of religion or of a literary work, பொருத்தம். 3. [in poetry.] Constructing verses in such a way that they shall end in any of the consonants, ஞ், ண், ந், ம், ன், ய், ர், ல், வ், ழ், ள்.--One of the வனப்பு, or beauties of comparison, செய்யுள்வனப்பினொன்று. 4. The rhyming of the last feet or letters in the lines, அடிகளினிறுதிாயெழுத்தேனுஞ்சொ ல்லேனுமொத்துவருவது. See தொடை. (p.) இயைபின்மையணி, s. A figure in rhetoric--comparing a thing to itself-as பொதுநீங்குவமை. இயைபுவண்ணம், s. Poetry in which the medial letters abound, ஓர்வண் ணம். இயைபுளன், s. A worthy person, புகழாளன். இயைவு, v. noun. utṟu (p. 60) கிறேன், உதறினேன், வேன், உதற, v. a. To shake off, throw off by shaking, to shake a thing, especially a cloth; to shake the feet, hands, &c.; to shake itself --as an animal; to shake the head--as a dog having something in its mouth, உதறிப் போட. 2. To shake or thrust off a person, animal or thing that adheres to one; to extricate one's self from another in wrestling by shaking, pushing, &c., விதிர்க்க. 3. To shake off a business, affairs, office, &c., தள்ளிவிட. 4. To snatch or wrest one's self from the grasp of another. (See திமிற.) 5. (fig.) To renounce friends and social life for the desert--as an ascetic, நீக்க. 6. To strike--as the hands, feet, &c. through pain, grief, fear, anger, &c., துக்கமுதலியவற் றாற்கைவிதிர்க்க. 7. v. n. To shake with ague, fever, palsy, &c., நடுங்க. உதறிக்கொண்டுபோகிறான். He is refractory. இனஞ்சனம்யாவையுமுதறிவிட்டுப்போனான். He has utterly renounced his relations and friends--as a devotee, or to form other connections. என்வார்த்தையையுதறிவிடாதே. Do not reject what I say. உதறிமுறிப்பான், s. The விஷ்ணு காந்தை plant, Spharanthus Indicus. உதறுகாலி, s. A cow that kicks, or twitches away its leg and will not be milked, உதறுகாற்பசு. 2. A woman that shakes her feet in walking, உதறுகாற் பெண்--such a woman is supposed to bring evil upon her children and household. உள்ளதையுங்கெடுத்தாளுதறுகாலிவந்து. When this woman who shakes her feet in walking joined the family she destroyed all its wealth. கையையுதற, inf. To shake the hands when under the influence of strong emotion, especially grief. 4) *

uṟṭṭai (p. 67) s. [prov.] A bad smell, stench, offensive smell--as of a dead carcass, bugs, &c., துர்க்கந்தம். உறட்டைநாற்றம்--உறட்டைமண ம், s. Stench, stink, offensive effluvia. உறட்டையடிக்க--உறட்டைவீச, inf. To diffuse itself as an offensive, or disgusting fume, துர்க்கந்தம்வீச. 68)

uḷ (p. 67) --உள்ளு, உள்ளுகிறேன், உள் ளினேன், உள்ளுவேன், உள்ள, v. a. To think, think of, consider, bear in mind, to remember, நினைக்க--as one of the ten அவத் தை. 2. To revolve, intend, எண்ண. (p.) கயந்தன்னைவைததையுள்ளிவிடும். The mean person will think of the reproach cast on him. (குறள்.) உள்ளல், v. noun. Thinking. உள்ளார், s. Foes, enemies, பகை ஞர். (p.) உள்ளிய, rel. part. Esteemed. உள்ளியதெள்ளியராயினுமூழ்வினைபையநுழைந்துவி டும். Though he be a man held in esteem, his destiny will quietly insinuate itself into his circumstances. (ஔவைகுறள்.) 54)

ūṭu (p. 69) s. [as உள்.] The inside, that which is intermediate, between, நடு. (சத. 18.) 2. [vul.] Wool, thread woven across the warp, தார்நூல்.--Note. Commonly ஊடு as an affix governs the dative--as அவர்களுக்கூடேவந்தான், he came between them. இந்தஅலுவல்களுக்கூடேயிதையுமெப்படிச்செய்வே ன். How can I possibly do this in the midst of so much business? கனவூடும். Even in a dream-- (பார.) ஊடறுக்க, inf. To cut through, separate and pass through, cleave, to sunder--as an arrow; to force one's way through people, jungle, beasts, &c., உள்ளறுக்க. 2. To determine between two parties, to decide differences, settle amicably, வழக்குத்தீர்க்க. ஊடாட, inf. To go about--as a domestic in a house, அகத்திலுலாவித்திரிய. 2. To frequent, பலகாற்பயில. 3. To deal, or be familiar with, பழக. 4. To be conversant with a subject--as of science, art, &c., கல்விபயில. பாரைக்கூடாடாதபாறைபசுமரத்தின்வேருக்கூடாடி விடும். A rock that cannot be moved by a crow-bar gives way to the roots of a tree. முட்டரோடாடியநட்புக்கருங்காலிக்கட்டையூடா டியகால். Friendship with the base is like a hard block thrown against the knee. மயிரூடாடாநட்புச்சிறிதுபொருளுடாடக்கெடும்... Friendship so close as not to admit of even a hair-like interruption may be destroyed by pecuniary dealings. ஊடாடிப்பார்க்க, inf. To search, examine, &c., to look into, ஆராய்ந்துபார்க்க. கல்வியிலூடாடிப்பார். Look into learning, learn. ஊடாட்டம், v. noun. Familiarity, intercourse, intimacy, பழகுகை. ஊடாட்டம்பண்ண, inf. To be familiar, have intercourse, with, பயிற்சி பண்ண. ஊடுசெல்ல, inf. To pass through a crowd, a jungle, &c. ஊடுதாக்க, inf. To oppose with firmness, பின்னிடாமலெதிர்நிற்க. 2. To compare two things with each other with regard to their strength. ஒன்றோடொன்றூடுதாக்க, inf. To oppose each other. ஊடுபற்ற, inf. To burn within a lamp--as wick when the oil is out, உள்ளேபற்றியெரிய. ஊடுபோக்க, inf. To run through, cause to pass through, உருவச்செய்ய. 2. To decide between parties, settle amicably, வழக்குத்தீர்க்க. ஊடுருவ, inf. To penetrate--as rays, air, a weapon; to transpierce, உள் ளேயுருவ. 2. v. n. To take off, take away, extract, take out, remove a stain, dirt, humor, &c., or one body from another, chemically, or otherwise combined, ஒன்றிலிருந்தெடுக்க. 3. To undertake, take in hand, enter upon, தொடங்க. 4. To adopt--as a sentiment, &c., receive, take--as one's own, அங்கீகரிக்க. 5. [in combination.] To rise, extend itself, become spread, or liffused, to be attacked with pain, &c., மயக்கமெடுக்க. 13. To swell, heave, rise in billows, எழும்ப. 14. To keck, puke, vomit, வாந்தியெடுக்க. எடுக்கத்தொடுக்கவிடான். He will not let me begin; spoken figuratively in allusion to the discharge of arrows. எடுப்பாரும் பிடிப்பாருமுண்டானாலிளைப்புந்தவிப்பும் மெத்தத்தோன்றும். Where there are many attendants much trouble is experienced. பிள்ளைக்குமூக்கெடுக்க. To raise or force out the upper part of the nose of an infant--as a nurse by pressing with two fingers. அரசனாலயமெடுத்தான். The king has built a temple. இந்தப்பாரமெடுக்கமாட்டேன். I am unable to carry this load. அதையெடுத்துப்பேசினான். He took up the subject. யானைதும்பிக்கையினாலேபணத்தையெடுக்கும். The elephant will take up a small coin with his proboscis. ஏரியெடுத்துப்போகிறது. The water of the lake has carried away its embankment. இதினாலிலாகிரியெடுக்கும். This will cause intoxication. சோற்றிலிருக்கிறகல்லையெடுக்கமாட்டாதவன்மோக னக்கல்லைத்தாங்குவானா. Will he who cannot pick out a stone from rice be able to lift the stone architrave of a temple vestibule? i. e. he who is incapable of little matters must be incapable of great ones. விழுந்தவனையெடாமலுதைக்கலாமா. Is it proper to kick, instead of raising, a fallen man? இந்தச்சீலையையெந்தக்கடையிலெடுத்தாய். In what bazaar did you buy this cloth? புல்லெடுக்கிறதரை. Ground covered with an exuberant growth of grass. எடாதஎடுப்பு, s. Living above one's rank, circumstances, means, &c., engaging in an enterprise, beyond one's powers, &c. எடாதஎடுப்பெடுக்கலாகாது. It is improper to engage in an enterprise above one's circumstances. எடுகூலி, s. Porterage, hire for carrying burdens, சுமைக்கூலி. எடுத்தடிமடக்கு, s. Retort, turning a person's reasons or remarks against himself, confuting one by his own arguments, anticipating a person in word, or action, in order to check, or thwart him in his object; interrupting one in speaking, &c. 2. Temerity, rashness; speaking, answering, or acting rashly, துணிவு. எடுத்தடிவைக்க, inf. To begin to step--as a child, காலைப்பெயர்த்துவைக்க. எடுத்தபடி, adv. Suddenly, at once, promptly, extemporaneously. எடுத்தமொழியினெய்தவைத்தல், v. noun. An author's forming rules applicable to the examples he finds-one of the உத்தி. எடுத்தலளவையாகுபெயர், s. One of the four kinds of அளவையாகுபெயர், according to which, the weight of the article weighed is used for the scale. எடுத்தாட்சி, s. A thing much in use, வழக்கம். எடுத்தார்கைப்பிள்ளை, s. A haughty person, an upstart, one who lives above his rank or circumstances, மேட்டிமைக் காரன். எடுப்புச்சாய்ப்பு, Gentility, genteel and obliging behavior, united with display, pomp, grandeur, &c., உயர்வுதாழ்வு. எடுப்புண்டது, appel. n. That which is taken and carried away. எடுப்புத்தேர், s. A small portable shrine for the conveyance of an idol on men's shoulders--opp. to இழுப்புத்தேர். கல்லெடுப்பு, s. A funeral rite. எடை, v. noun. Taking up, தூக் குகை. 2. Weighing, நிறுக்குந்தொழில். 3. A weight, நிறையளவு. 4. Assumption, adoption, ஏற்றுக்கொள்கை. 5. [ex எடுப்பு, to rouse.] Rousing from sleep, &c., எழுப் புகை. ē (p. 76) . One of the seven long vowels, நெட்டுயிரிலொன்று. 2. An arrow, அம்பு. 3. A particle of emphasis, &c., இடைச்சொல். In நன்னூல், it is said to have six different uses: 1. பிரிநிலை, a distinguishing particle-as அவனேசொன்னான், it was he who said it. In some cases, it would be used for self or selves in the plural where the connection demanded it--as he himself said it. 2. வினா, interrogative: அவனேகொண் டான், was it he that bought it? 3. எண், enumeration or copulative--as சாத்தனே கொற்றனே இருவரும்வந்தார், Sattan and Kottan both came; கடலே, கரையே, மரமே, மலரே, வளையே, இவ்வைந்து, the sea, the land, the tree, the flower, the conch, these five. 4. ஈற்றசை or அசைநிலை, a terminate expletive --as மல்லலோங்கெழில்யானைமருமம்பாய்ந்தொளித்த தே, (the weapon) lodged itself in the breast of the beautiful and powerful elephant. 5. தேற்றம், certainty, confidence, appeal, emphasis--as இதுள்ளதே, this is really true; முயற்குக்கோடில்லையே, the hare has no horns. 6. இசைநிறை, a poetic expletive for completing the metre--as ஏஏ இவ ளொருத்திபேடி, she is a hermaphrodite; பேடியோவென்றாரே, he said, is she an hermaphrodite? To these the commentator adds 7. எதிர்மறை, negative as implied by the tones and inflections of the speaker rather than expressed by the particle--as அவன்வந்தானே, he came, did he? implying he did not come. Another may also be given. 8. இகழ்ச்சி, an interjection of contempt--as எஏ--வைத்தியகாரா, oh, oh, (or fie, fie), thou stupid fellow. (p.) 5) *

oṭungku (p. 81) கிறேன், ஒடுங்கினேன், வே ன், ஒடுங்க, v. n. To shrink, become reduced, compressed, closed, contracted, narrow, to lessen, to abate, crouch, lie within a small compass, diminish, grow less--as a globe from the centre to the poles, அடங்க. 2. To be restrained--as the senses, desires, &c., புலனொங்க. 3. To give place, recede, pass on one side--as in meeting a superior; to shrink within one's self, showing reverence, taking off the mantle, turban, sandals, &c.; to creep along sideways, ஒதுங்க. 4. To be reduced in circumstances, power, prosperity, in show, in expenditure, in the mental or bodily faculties, energies, &c., to grow lean, be reduced in size, whether by disease, want of food, or otherwise, குறைய. 5. To cease-as noise, bustle, stir, &c., அமைய. 6. To sink or retire--as the soul in sleep, fainting, or through the different stages at death, சோர. 7. To become dissolved or involved one within another--as the elements, worlds, &c., till all is absorbed in the deity, பூதங்களொடுங்க. 8. To end, terminate, cease, முடிய. 9. To obey, submit, கீழ்ப்படிய. 1. To be concealed, பதுங்க. 11. To be packed, stowed away, செறிய. 12. To be retrenched, சுருங்க. 13. To disappear, become absorbed, dissolved--as salt in water, &c., கரைய. 14. To grow dim-as a light, a heavenly body, &c., to become extinct--as light by passing into its previous elements or ether, ஒளிமழுங்க. மாடுநுகத்தைக்கண்டொடுங்குகிறது. The ox has assumed a sickly appearance; or it shrinks at the sight of the yoke. ஊணொடுங்கவீணொடுங்கும். If his food be reduced, his dissipation will cease. உலகுதோன்றினமுறையேயொடுங்கும். The world will be reduced to its primeval elements in the order in which it was educed. ஆளொடுங்கினவேளைபார்த்துவந்தான். He watched for an opportunity and came when all was still (for plunder, &c.). கலிமுதிரமுதிரப்பெரியவர்களொடுங்கிவிட்டார்கள்... As the iron age advances, the great are reduced. ஒடுங்கலில்பல்கலை. The various sciences which are unlimited. குளிராலொடுங்க, inf. To shrink with cold. ஒடுங்கி, s. A tortoise, ஆமை. ஒடுக்கம், v. noun. Narrowness, straitness, closeness, வழியொடுக்கம். 2. Contraction into itself--as the tortoise, an elastic substance, &c., சுருங்குகை. 3. Retirement within doors, abatement, concealment by stooping and creeping along--as a man to shoot, or a tiger to spring on its prey, &c., பதுங்குகை. 4. Suppression, contraction, reduction, நெருக்கம். 5. Reverence, self-restraint, modesty, அ டக்கம். 6. Involution--as of the elements one into another, absorption, dissolution, disappearance--as of salt in water, ஒன்றிலொன்றடங்குகை. 7. Cessation (of noise, bustle, stir--as by night in time of epidemics, &c.), quietude, calmness, stillness, அமைவு. 8. Sinking as the soul through its different stages at death, gradual reduction--as of circumstances, the powers of the body by age, &c., பலமுதலியவொடுங்குகை. 9. s. End, close, termination, முடிவு. ஒடுக்கத்திலேயொன்றுமில்லை. At the end nothing (of earth) will accompany us, remain, avail, &c. அவனுக்குச்சாப்பாடொடுக்கமாய்ப்போயிற்று. His food is diminished in quantity. காரியமொடுக்கத்தில்வந்தது. The matter has resolved itself into a narrow compass. காரியமொடுக்கமாயிருக்கின்றது. The business, provision, ceremony, &c., is on a small scale. ஒடுக்கநாள், s. A day of distress. ஒடுக்கமில்லாதவன், s. One who does not restrain himself, his passions, desires, &c. 2. One who does not pay proper respect to his superiors. ஒடுக்கம்பார்த்துவர, inf. To attack a house, a city, when in a defenceless state, or by night when all are asleep. ஒடுக்கவணக்கம், s. Modest deportment, reverence, veneration. பனியொடுக்கம், s. The fall of heavy dew when all is still. காற்றொடுக்கம், s. A calm, a lull, absence of wind. புலனொடுக்கம், s. Restraint of the senses. 2. Absorption of the senses by sleep, syncope, the approach of death, &c., unconsciousness, stupor. 49)
