சமயம்
camayam (p. 162) s. A convenient, suitable or proper time; leisure, convenience, opportunity, தருணம். 2. Time, season, occasion, juncture of time; emergency, extremity, காலம். 3. Any religious persuasion, faith or system, மார்க்கம். (c.) W. p. 894. SAMAYA. --Note.. There are twelve principal religious systems, of which six are approved and six rejected by the Saiva sect. 1. உட் சமையம், or the six systems considered orthodox by the Saivas are. 1. வைரவம், making Bhairava supreme. 2. வாமம், regarding the female principle in nature, as the primeval form of deity, and teaching the worship of the generative female organ. 3. காளாமுகம், similar to the வாமம். 4. மாவிரதம், teaching that the deity is a pure spirit. 5. பாசுபதம், similar to மாவிரதம். 6. சைவம், Saivism, which teaches that the deity is both spirit and matter; assuming forms for accomplishing his purposes. II. புறச்சமயம், or the six heterodox systems; viz.:-- 1. உலகாயதம். A species of Atheism regarding sensual gratifications as the chief good, as taught by the atheistical school of Charvaka. 2. புத் தம். Bhuddism, which rejects the notion of a Supreme being, maintains that all material existences proceed from a fortuitous combination of the four primitive elements, (earth, water, fire, and air,) and that mental phenomena are the mere results of organization. It regards Bhudd as a deified teacher and object of worship. 3. சமணம். The Jaina system which is a modification of Bhuddism, and regards Argha as the deified preceptor and object of worship. 4. மீமாஞ்சை. A system that regards Brahm as the soul of the universe. 5. பாஞ்சாரத்திரம். A system taught by Vishnu, during five successive nights. 6. பாட்டாசாரியம். The system of Battacharya whose followers regard the Vedas as god, and consider that virtuous actions of themselves result in felicity. III. Other systems derived from these twelve or in some respects similar to them are very numerous, some of them are கபாலம், சவுத்திராந்திகம், யோகசாரணம், ஆத்துமிகம், வைபாடிகம், நிகண்டவா தம், நையாயிகம், வைசேஷிகம், பதஞ்சலியம், சாங்கியம், சித்தாந்தம், வேதாந்தம், &c. The six orthodox systems among the Vaishnuvas are 1. யாதவம், that of Yádava Misra. 2. மாயாவாதம், that by Sankarachárya. 3. இரணியகர்ப்பம், that by Hiranyagarbha. 4. இராமானுசீயம், that by Rámánuja. 5. பாஸ்கரம், that by Bhaskara. 6. தத்துவவாதம், that by Mádhavácharya. சமயகருமம், s. Rites and duties of religion, மார்க்காசாரம். சமயகாரியம், s. Questions, matters, &c., of theology; religious concerns, subjects, &c. சமயக்கட்டு, s. Religious obligation. See கட்டு. சமயக்கொள்கை--சமயக்கோட்பாடு, s. Religious opinions, tenets, &c. சமயசாத்திரம், s. The theology of a sect. 2. Religious writings or shastras. சமயதீட்சை, s. The ceremony of initiating a disciple in the mantras, &c., peculiar to the sect. See தீட்சை. சமயத்தார், s. The followers of a religious system. சமயங்கடக்க, inf. To transcend all religions--as the supreme being. (p.) சமயநிந்தை, s. Scoffing at religion, profaneness, blasphemy, &c. சமயநிலை, s. The commands, tenets of a religion. 2. Religion as observed, believed, practised, &c., by its professors. சமயநூல், s. The religious writings of a sect. சமயப்பற்று, v. noun. Attachment to a religion. சமயபத்தி, s. Religious devotedness to a creed. சமயபேதம், s. Heresy, heterodoxy. 2. Diversity of religions. 3. Schism. 4. (c.) Unseasonableness. சமயபேதி, s. A heretic. 2. Schismatic. 3. One of another religion. சமயப்போலி, s. A spurious system of religion. (p.) சமயப்போக்கு, v. noun. The substance, scope, &c., of a religion. (Little used.) சமயமதம், s. Bigotry, enthusiasm, conceit in religion. சமயமதங்கொண்டாட, inf. To be enthusiastic, to act the bigot. சமயமானம், s. A natural regard to one's own religion. (c.) 2. (Rott.) Constancy or firmness in a religion. சந்நியாசிக்குஞ் சாதிமானஞ் சமயமானம்விடாது.... The ascetic who has relinquished every thing will not relinquish his caste or sect. சமயவாதம், s. Religious controversy. சமயவாதி, s. A disputant for religion. 2. A professor of religion. சமயாசாரம், s. The rites and ceremonies, of a religion according to a prescribed institute. 2. Religious practice, observance of rites. (c.) சமயாதீதன், s. The supreme Being-as transcending all religions, சமயங்கடந்த கடவுள். (p.) சமயி, s. [com. சமயத்தான்.] A religionist, a sectarian, the follower of any religion, sect, &c., a sectary. (p.) சமயமாயிருக்கையில், [adverbially.] At a particular juncture, in an emergency. சமயங்கடத்த, inf. [prov.] To while away time, to loiter. சமயங்கிடைக்க, inf. To obtain an opportunity. (c.) சமயங்கெட்டவேளை, s. An unseasonable time. (Limited usage.) சமயத்துக்குதவ, inf. To help in an emergency. சமயம்பார்க்க--சமயந்தேட, inf. To watch an opportunity. சமயாசமயம், s. Urgent or pressing occasion, unfavorable opportunity. (c.) தற்சமயம், s. The very juncture or moment. 2. A special opportunity. நற்சமயம், s. A good opportunity. சமயந்தப்பிவந்தான். He came unseasonably. சமயத்திலே கையைவிரித்தான். He refrained from helping in time of need. 2) *

cāttiram (p. 176) --சாஸ்திரம், s. Scripture, written works on science, philosophy, &c., கலைநூல். 2. Astrology, astronomy, சோதிடம். 3. Any of the mystical science for ascertaining and predicting future events, அதி நூல். 4. Divination, sooth-saying, prognostication by any of the mysterious arts, ஆரூடம். 5. Religious or other institutes as laid down in writings and considered, of divine origin or authority, including the Vedas, Agamas, Puranas, incantations, works on medicine, mathematics, law, mechanics, erotics, &c., வேதாகமமுதலி யன. 6. Any of the systems of philosophical theology--as the Sidhanta, the Vedanta, the Potanta, &c., வேதாங்கம். 7. Religious, ceremonial, or other rules, laws, precepts, &c., as laid down in the sacred writings, விதிப்பிரமாணம். W. p. 841. S'ASTRA.--Note. The three சாத்திரம் or systems of philosophical religion; are. 1. சாங்கியம், the Sankhya system, the founder of which was Kapila, maintaining that perfect bliss consists in the entire subjection of the three gunas, which proceeded from the threefold origin of the eternal, unoriginated Maya; 2. பாதஞ்சலியம், the Yoga philosophy, as taught by Pathanjali, distinguished from the ceremonial; 3. வே தாந்தம், the theological portion of the Vedas as contained in the Upanishads. The founder of this last school was Vyasa, and its most celebrated supporter was Sankaracharya. It makes the divine being the the soul of the Universe, and is a system of Pantheism. See வேதாந்தம். The six சாஸ்திரம் or philosophical systems are; 1. வேதாந்தம், theology, as the highest knowledge. (See above); 2. வைசே ஷிகம், the Vaiseshika doctrine, morality, or ethics, a branch of the Nyaya or logical school instituted by Kanada; 3. பாட் டம், the system of Bhatta'charya, in an epic poem containing narrations; 4. பிர பாகரம், ceremonial law; 5. பூருவமீமாஞ்சை, antiquity or works and actions of old times, elucidating the Karma-kanda of the Vedas, originating with the Muni Jaimini; 6. உத்தரமீமாஞ்சை, logic, the same as the Vedanta, founded on the Gnana-kanda, or theological portion of the Vedas, and treating of God as the soul of the Universe. It is ascribed to Vyasa. சாத்திரத்துக்குக் கொஞ்சங் கூட்டிக்கொள். Take a morsel for form's sake, (lit.) in order to conform to the shastra. சாத்திரக்காரன், s. An astrologer, a diviner, a soothsayer. 2. The author of a shastra, ஆக்கியோன். சாத்திரங்கேட்க, inf. To consult an astrologer or other diviner. சாஸ்திரக்கியன், s. A man of science, a learned man, a pundit, பண்டிதன். (R.) சாத்திரசாலை, s. A college. (R.) சாத்திரசித்தம், s. Sentiment, meaning, doctrine, &c., maintained in a shastra, நூலினாலுறுதிப்பட்டது. (p.) சாத்திரஞ்சொல்ல, inf. To foretell, prognosticate by astrology, augury, &c., to divine. 2. To assert authoritatively as the shastras, தீர்ப்பாயுரைக்க. சாத்திரதீட்சை--சாத்திரதீக்கை, s. Written instruction, the scriptures as one of the modes of enlightening the mind of a disciple. See தீட்சை. சாத்திரமுறை--சாத்திரவிதி, s. The precepts, injunctions, &c., of the shastras. சாத்திரம்பார்க்க, inf. To consult astrology, &c., at the birth of a child, for the site of a house, an undertaking, &c. சாத்திரம்பண்ண--சாத்திரஞ்செய்ய, inf. To make religious ceremonies prescribed in the shastras. சாத்திரி--சாத்திரவாதி, s. [com. சாஸ்திரி.] An astrologer, a soothsayer, a diviner, a prognosticator. 2. A doctor of Sanscrit literature. 35) *
மாயை
māyai (p. 350) s. Falsehood, vanity, ideality of the world, பொய். 2. A power or energy, as மாயாசத்தி. 3. Deceit, fraud, trick. வஞ்சம். 4. Tricks, jugglery, இந்திரசாலம். 5. Lukshmi. W. p. 657. MAYA. 6. Kali, காளி. 7. Rati, wife of Kaman. இரதி. 8. A town, as மாயாபுரி. 9. Matter, See வித்தியாதத்துவம்-Note. This word retains its Sanscrit pronunciation in combination. மாயை, 5. Five kinds of delusion, or evil, on the principles of Adwitas or followers of Sankaracharya. They are: 1. தமம், the tamasa disposition--darkness, or obscurity of mind; 2. மாயை, ideality, inherent evil, personified matter; 3. மோகம், depravity, error; 4. அவித்தை, ignorance, folly; 5. அநிர்தம், that which is without, or strange, opposed to God. அதோமாயை--அசுத்தமாயை, s. Subordinate or inferior illusion, or Maya. அதோமாயையிலிருந்துபிரகிருதிதோன்றும். The female principle in nature springs from the inferior Maya. சுத்தமாயை--மகாமாயை, s. Primitive or original Maya, as காரணமாயை. மாயாகாரியம், s. The effects of Maya, its various changes, and diversifications in nature. மாயாசங்கற்பம், s. Any remarkable effect of Maya by way of creation or destruction. மாயாசத்தி, s. A power, energy, or principle which contains the five kinds of மாயை, given above. See மாமாயை. மாயாசாலம்--மாயாசித்து, s. Dissimulation, treachery, imposture. மாயாதருமம், s. Transient or deceptive merit, பொய்ப்புண்ணியம். 2. Nature or peculiarity of Maya, மாயையின்றன்மை. மாயாதர்மம், 2. The two peculiarities of Maya are: 1. சங்கோசம், contracting; 2. விகாசம், expanding. மாயாதாரகம், s. That which has Maya for a principal cause. மாயாதாரணை, s. Things formed by Maya, the third of nine classes. See தாரணை. மாயாதேகம், s. A transitory body, நிலை யற்றசரீரம். மாயாதேவி, s. The mother of Buddha, புத்தன்றாய். மாயாதேவிசுதன், s. The son of Maya, Buddha. (சது.) மாயாபஞ்சகம், s. As மாயை, 5. மாயாபாசம், s. Being under the influence of Maya. மாயாபுரி, s. One of the seven famous towns. See புரி. 2. Brass, பித்தளை. மாயாப்பிரதிவிம்பர், s. [hon.] He whose glories, are reflected, in creation, &c., by means of Maya, மாயையாற்பிரதிபலிக்குமுருவு டையோர். (உபநி-124.) மாயாமலம், s. As மாயைமலம். மாயாரூபம், s. Feigned shapes, forms assumed, or caused by super-human powers. மாயாலட்சணம், s. The properties of Maya. They are five; 1. அசத்து, unreality; 2. சடம், matter; 3. அநித்தம், transientness; 4. துக்கம், distress; 5. கண்டம், division, a part. மாயாலீலை, s. Sportive illusions, as of Krishna, Siva, &c. See இலீலை. மாயாவல்லபம், s. The power or efficacy of Maya. மாயாவாதம், s. A religion whose doctrines are false, skepticism, ஓர்மதம். மாயாவாதி, s. Destroyer of Maya, and its evils. (பிரபுலிங்.) 2. One of the above religion, or sect; a skeptic. மயாவித்தை, s. Magic, as மாயவித்தை. மாயாவிமோசனம், s. Removal of Maya. மாயாவினோதம், s. Legerdemain, sportive deception, கண்கட்டுவித்தை. மாயைமலம், s. Confusion of mind, one of the three defilements. See மலம். மாயையுற்றாள், appel. n. Kali, காளி. மாயோபாதானம், s. That which is caused by Maya; [ex உபாதானம்.] 21)
வேதம்
vētam (p. 402) s. The holy books of the Hindus--said to have been revealed by Brahma, but compiled from tradition by vyasa. They are four in number; 1. இருக்கு, Rig Veda, chiefly relating to ritual worship; 2. எசுர், Yajur Veda, concerning the ceremonies observed in sacrifices; 3. சாமம், Sama Veda, containing odes, hymns and chants; 4. அதர்வ ணம், Atharvan'a, with mantras or magical formulas, the least esteemed of the four. உபவேதம், s. The four secondary sciences. These are அருத்தவேதம், commentary on the Vedas; ஆயுர்வேதம், Physic; காந்தருவவேதம், music; தனுர்வேதம், archery. வேதகலாபம், s. Religious persecution. வேதக்காரர், s. Brahmans skilled in one or more of the Vedas. (R.) 2. [Heathen usage.] Roman Catholics. வேதக்கொடியோன், s. An epithet of Dron'acharya as the Veda-bannered, துரோணாசாரியன். (சது.) வேதசாஸ்திரம், s. The four Vedas and six Shastras collectively. 2. [corrup. usage.] Theology. வேதசாஸ்திரி, s. One learned in the Vedas and Shastras. 2. [not authorized.] A theologian. வேதசாட்சி, s. [R, C, usage,] A martyr. வேதசாரம், s. [lit. the essence of religion.] The title of a book. 2. A reed, நாணற்புல். வேதநாயகன், s. The Deity as lord of the Vedas, பிரமன், கடவுள். வேதநூல், s. A religious system. வேதபாரகர், s. Brahmans, பார்ப்பார். 2. Those who are well versed in the Vedas, See பாரகர். 3. [Chris. usage.] Scribes, expounders of the Jewish law. வேதபாராயணம், s. Study of the Vedas. வேதபுஸ்தகம், s. [Christ. usage.] The Bible. வேதப்புரட்டு, v. noun. Perversion of the Vedas. 2. [in Christ. usage.] Corruption of the true religion, heresy. வேதமாயாவாதம், s. A religious sect. வேதமுதல்வி, s. An epithet of Sarasvati, Lukshmi and Parvati. வேதமோத, inf. To recite the Vedas; [ex ஓது.] வேதரஞ்சகன், s. Brahma, பிரமன். வேதவியாக்கியானம், s. [Chris. usage.] Expounding the Scriptures. வேதவியாசர், s. Vyasa, compiler of the Vedas. வேதன், s. God, கடவுள். 2. Jupiter, வியாழம். 3. Argha, அருகன். வேதா, s. God, கடவுள். 2. Brahma, பிரமன். (சது.) வேதாகமம், s. Authoritative books corresponding with the Vedas. 2. [Chris. usage.] The Bible. வேதாக்கிரேசர், s. Chief teachers of the Vedas. வேதாக்கினி, s. A sacrificial fire. See அக்கினி. வேதாங்கம், s. Sciences subordinate to the Vedas, of which there are six: 1. மந்திரம், mantras; 2. நிகண்டு, vocabulary; 3. வியாகரணம், grammar; 4. சந்தோபிசிதம், prosody; 5. நிருத்தம், explanation of mystic words; 6. சோதிடம், astronomy, astrology.--According to Wils. சிட்சை and கற்பம், are given for the first two. வேதாந்தம், s. [lit. the end of the Vedas.] A refined system of philosophy taught by Vyasa in the Uttara-mimamsa, and reduced by himself to 5 stanzas. It was commented on by Madevacharya, Sankaracharya, and Ramanujacharya, severally in the Dwaita, Adwaita, and Visishta--adwaita systems. The first and last allow a distinct existence of matter, but not its eternity. The second denies the real existence of matter, and resolves all existence into God. The Vedanta, simply stated, is a system of Pantheism. See அத்துவிதம் and துவிதம். 2. The thirty-two Upanishads, or appendixes, to the Vedas. See சாஸ்திரம். வேதாந்தசூடாமணி, s. A metaphysical treatise by சிவப்பிரகாசதேசிகர். வேதாந்தமதஸ்தாபனம், s. Establishing the doctrines of the Vedanta system. வேதாந்தன்--வேதார்த்தன், s. God as the object of the Vedas, கடவுள். வேதாந்தி, s. [pl. வேதாந்திகள்.] One skilled in the Vedanta. வேதோக்தம், s. That which is scriptural or declared in the Vedas. 24) *
