aṟi (p. 33) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. a. To know, understand, comprehend, recognize, be acquainted with; have a carnal knowledge of, தெரிய. (c.) புத்தியறிந்தபெண். A marriageable girl. வல்லமையறிவோம். We will find out which is the most competent, (by way of bravado.) தன்னையறியுமறிவேயறிவாகும் பின்னையறிவது பேயறி வாமே. To know one's self is knowledge, other knowledge is inferior. அறிகருவி, s. The organs of sense. அறிகுறி, s. A sign, mark, token, symbol. அறிஞன், s. A man of knowledge, especially of divine things, அறிவுடையோன். 2. A poet, புலவன். 3. A sage, முனிவன். 4. Mercury the planet, புதன். 5. Buddha, புத்தன். அறிதுயில், s. A kind of sleep or meditation, in which the person understands all that passes about him--an attribute supposed to belong to the gods and sages, especially to Vishnu. அறிதுயிலமர்ந்தமூர்த்தி, s. Vishnu, திருமால். அறிமடம், s. Indisposition to reduce to practice what is learned. 2. Inability to recall to memory, stupidity in learned persons from infatuation. 3. Feigned ignorance. அறிமுகம், s. Acquaintance with persons (and in vulgar use) with things, slight familiarity. அறியக்கொடுக்க, inf. To inform against one, indict, impeach. 2. To communicate information, instruction, &c. அறியாமை, neg. v. noun. Ignorance. அறியாவினா, s. One of the six forms of interrogation--as when one asks for information. அறியொண்ணாமை, neg. v. noun. The impossibility of knowing. அறிவினா, s. One of the six forms of interrogation; questioning in order to teach. அறிகை, v. noun. Knowing, understanding, knowledge, உணர்வு. 50)

iẕi (p. 55) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. n. To descend, dismount, sink, fall into, to be involved in, இறங்க. 2. To be degraded, disgraced, to degenerate, to be reduced in character, estimation, rank or circumstances, இழிவுபட. 3. To fall below mediocrity, to be inferior, to be below in comparison, தாழ. இழிகடை, s. [vul.] The meanest, lowest, most degraded, மிகவிழிந்தது. (Abusively.) அவனொரு இழிகடை. He is a low wretch. இழிகண், s. Inflammation of the eyes causing the lids to droop, இழிந்தகண். இழிகுலத்தோர், s. Low caste people, கீழ்மக்கள். இழிசனர், s. Persons of low caste, illiterate or ill-bred people, கீழ்மக்கள். இழிசனர்வார்த்தை, s. The vulgar dialect. இழிசொல், s. Disgraceful or improper language, பழிச்சொல், of which four kinds are enumerated, viz.: 1. கோள் --குறளை, an invidious or injurious report, tale bearing, aspersion, slander, backbiting. 2. பொய்மொழி, lying, falsehood. 3. கடுஞ்சொல், harsh expressions, irritating language, scolding. 4. பயனில்சொல், nonsense, idle talk, vain expressions. 2. A vulgar word, இழிவானசொல். இழிஞர், s. Low caste people, the vulgar, the wretched, the miserable, debased, ignoble persons, சண்டாளர். இழிதகவு, v. noun. Inferiority, baseness, disgrace, degradation, meanness, இழிவு. 2. s. Poverty, destitution, எளிமை. இழிதிணை, s. The inferior class. See திணை. இழிந்தோர், s. The vulgar, the illiterate, low-bred persons, தாழ்ந்தோர். இழிபு, v. noun. Lowness, inferiority, meanness, degradation, baseness, தாழ்வு. 2. A hollow or ditch, any hole or cavity, depressions in land, பள்ளம். வெள்ளைக்கிழிபு, s. The less or minor species of வெண்பா verse. இழிவு, v. noun. Inferiority, lowness in rank or character, meanness, baseness, தாழ்வு. 2. Contempt, disgrace, dishonor, ignominy, abjectness, wretchedness, abasement, நிந்தை. 3. Diminution, decrease, a diminished quantity, deficiency, குறைவு. 4. A hollow or cavity, பள்ளம். 5. Decay, ruin, destruction, கேடு. 6. Fault, blemish, deviation from rule, misdemeanor, குற்றம். இழிவறிந்துண்பான். One who eats knowing the advantages of a spare diet. இழிவுபட, inf. To grow mean, base, vile, to deteriorate, be in disgrace, to be degraded, ஈனப்பட. இழிவுபடுத்த, inf. v. a. To degrade, disgrace, deteriorate, debase, தாழ்வுபடுத்த. இழிவுபண்ண, inf. To treat with contempt, நிந்தைசெய்ய. தனதுமரபினிழிவுயர்ச்சியின்றி. (Choosing a wife) from a family neither above nor below his rank. 34)

ēmilāntu (p. 79) கிறேன், ஏமிலாந்தினே ன், வேன், ஏமிலாந்த, v. n. [prov.] To despond, despair, to stand aghast, be at one's wit's end, திகைத்துநிற்க. 2. To stare about, not knowing what to do--as when a great catastrophe has happened, மயங்கிநிற்க. 3. To be amazed, absent-minded, thinking of something else, நினைவுசிதற. ஏமிலாந்தி, s. Under, below, beneath. கீழாயிருக்க, inf. To be below, to be mean, to be inferior. கீழாலவத்தை, s. 'Descending states of the soul.' State and degree of consciousness, commencing with objective sensations and descending to subjective feeling and contemplation, the mind receding farther and farther from objective impressions and associations. Hindu physiologists fancy that the mind descends from its seat in the forehead to its other seats, the neck, breast, umbilicus and terminus rectum. (தத்துவக். சிவ. சி.) கீழிருக்க, inf. To lie under, to be under one's dominion or control. கீழாறு, s. A river under ground, பூமி யினுள்ளோடுமாறு. 2. A river in the Congu country, கொங்குதேசத்தாறு. கீழாறுகொண்டுபோயிற்று. The under ground river has carried it away--said of things lost without knowing how. கீழுக்குப்போக, inf. To be diminishes, to be reduced. அவன்புத்தியுங்கல்வியும்வரவரக்கீழுக்குப்போகி றது. His understanding and knowledge are more and more diminishing. கீழோங்கி, s. [prov.] An inferior class or fishermen--as distinguished from மே லோங்கி, a higher rank. கீழ்நோக்க, inf. To look downward, to tend downward, கீழ்ப்பார்க்க. 2. To be sensual, grovelling, to tend toward secularities, இழிவானதைவிரும்ப. 3. To be on the decline--as to wealth, &c.; to go to ruin, to come to naught, தாழ்வடைய. கீழ்நோக்கித்திட்ட--கீழ்நோக்கியேச inf. To use obscene language, to assail with very indecent speech. கீழ்நோக்கு--கீழ்நோக்கம் v. noun. Looking downward, downward tendency, கீழ்ப்பார்வை. 2. Low or grovelling pursuits, a base inclination; underhand, clandestine purpose. கீழ்மேலாக, adv. Upside down. கீழ்ப்பட, inf. To be subdued, to yield, to be submissive, to become inferior, கீழ்ப்படிய. 2. To be subject, to be subordinate, to submit to, அடங்க. 3. To be degraded, mean, base, இழிவுபட. கீழ்ப்படிய--கீழ்ப்பணிய inf. To submit, to yield, to obey. கீழ்ப்படியாத்தனம்--கீழ்ப்படியாமை, s. Disobedience, insubordination. கீழ்ப்படிவு, v. noun. Submission, obedience, subordination, subjection, கீழ்ப்ப ணிவு. 2. Docility, tractableness, அமைவு. கீழ்ப்படுத்த--கீழ்ப்படியப்பண்ண, inf. To subdue, to subject, to subordinate, to subjugate, to quell, அடக்க. 2. To lower, to bring down, to reduce, தாழ்வுபடு த்த. 3. To degrade, ஈனப்படுத்த. கீழ்நோக்கினநட்சத்திரம், s. [in astro.] A lunar mansion looking downward-opposed to மேனோக்கினநட்சத்திரம். They are twelve in number. (உள்ளமு.) கீழ்நோக்கினராசி, s. [in astrol.] A zodiacal sign which looks downward.-Note. These signs, as well as the கீழ்நோக் கினநட்சத்திரம், are favorable for planting esculent roots and digging wells. கீழ்மேற்றென்வடல், s. The east, west, north and south. 42)

kuruvi (p. 126) s. A small bird, சிறுபறவை. 2. The nineteenth lunar mansion, மூலநாள். See மூலம். குருவிக்கூட்டைக்கூட்டைக்கோலாலேகலைக்கலாமா. Is it right to destroy a nest with a stick; i.e. to ruin a family? குருவிக்குத்தக்கராமேசுரம். A Ramisseram suitable to a small bird; i. e. the poor do not need great houses, &.c. ஒருகுருவியுமறியாமல். Not a bird (soul) knowing; i. e. with the utmost secrecy. அங்கேஒருகுருவியுமில்லை. There is not a soul there. குரீஇ, s. A poetic form of குருவி. குருவிக்கூடு, s. A bird's nest. குருவியெச்சம், s. Bird's dung. குருவிவேட்டை, s. Fowling, birdcatching. குருவிக்குடல், s. A craving for food frequently, which some get by eating too little at a time, சிறுகுடல். குருவிக்கார், s. A small kind of black paddy, ஓர்நெல். குருவிவாலான், s. [local.] A large kind of paddy with a beard. ஓர்நெல். குருவித்தலைப்பாகல்--குருவிப்பாகல், s. [prov.] A kind of பாகல், with an edible, bitter fruit. குருவித்தலைப்பாக்கு--குருவிப்பாக்கு, s. [prov.] A peculiar species of arecanut, small but abundant. குருவிமீன், s. The name of a fish.

cittu (p. 183) s. Intellect, intelligence, the principle of knowledge or intellect in the deity, or human souls; spirit (as opposed to சடம் or அசித்து, matter or non-intelligence) in all its diversified forms in the various beings inhabiting the universe, whether supernal, infernal, human, brute or vegetable; all being capable of knowing and enjoying the deity, அறிவுப்பொருள். W. p. 325. CHIT. 2. (a change of சித்தி.) Illimitable and supernatural powers, obtained by abstract devotion, and exercised at pleasure; including the eight சித்தி, which see. 3. Legerdemain, sleight of hand, exhibition of supernatural appearances by means of magic, alchemy, &c., மாயாவித்தை. 4. The யாகம் sacrifice. சித்திலாதபோதுவேறுசீவனில்லையில்லையே. When there is no intelligence, there is no life. i. e. to deny intelligence [as a first cause.] is to deny that there is life. சித்தசித்து, s. Spirit and matter, or intelligence and non-intelligence--as eternal, uncreated principles in nature. சித்தசித்தீசுரன், s. Spirit, matter, and God--as constituting the world. (p.) சித்தாகாரம், s. Spirituality, incorporeality belonging to the spirit or intellect, as refined, purified and tending toward the deity; [ex ஆகாரம், form.] சித்துக்காரன், s. As சித்துவித்தைக்காரன். சித்துப்பறக்க, inf. To fly or pass through ether, as the சித்தர். 2. (fig.) To disappear, as a person; spoken in surprise or contempt. 3. (fig.) To carry one's self proudly, to take airs; to be supercilious. சித்துப்பொருள், s. An intelligent being, the faculty of intelligence, as in the deity or a soul--oppo. to சடப்பொருள். சித்துரூபம்--சிற்சொரூபம், s. Imbodied intelligence, a spiritual nature. 2. cērlṉ (p. 208) --சேரன், s. (pl. சேரர்.) Any king of the Séra race, that reigned on the Malabar coast and were said to be descended from the god of fire, பூழியன். சேரநாடு--சேரமண்டலம், s. The Séra country. வடக்குத்தலம்பழனிவாழ்கீழ்ச்செங்கோடு, குடக்குத்திசைக்கோழிக்கூடாம், கடற்கரையின் ஓரமதுதெற்காகுமோரெண்பதின்காதம், சேரநாட்டெல்லையெனச்செப்பு. The most northerly place is Palany, the most eastern Chengodu (Trichengodu), the most western Kolicodoo (Calicut), and on the south, is the sea--in all, eighty Kathams (eight hundred miles). This is called the boundary of the Séra country. சேரமான்--சேரமான்பெருமான், s. One of the sixty-three devotees of Siva, a king of the Séra race, an author and a universal linguist, knowing even the supposed language of animals, அறுபத்து மூவரிலொருவர். 34)

One who acts on his own responsibility. தன்மூப்புச்செலுத்த--தன்மூப்புப்பண் ண, inf. To act on one's own responsibility. தன்மேம்பாடு, v. noun. One's abilities, greatness, influence, தன்பெருமை. தன்மேம்பாட்டுரை, s. [a figure in rhetoric.] Declaration of one's greatness, abilities &c., ஓரலங்காரம், அஃது தற்பு கழ்ச்சி. தன்வசம், s. It will be just sufficient for his expenses. தன்னைக்கட்டிநடக்கிறவன், appel. n. A frugal person, one who keeps within his income. தன்னைத்தாழ்த்த, inf. To humble or to abase one's self. தன்னைப்புகழ்தல், v. noun. Praising one's self. தன்னைப்புகழ்தலுந்தகும்புலவோர்க்கே. It becomes a poet to praise himself. தன்னையறிதல், v. noun. A girl becoming marriageable, பருவம்வாய்புறல். 2. Knowing one's self; i. e. knowing the power of the soul--as the ascetic, ஆ ன்மநிலையையுணர்தல். தன்னையறியாதசன்னதமில்லை. There is no want of self-possession; spoken of one supposed to be possessed by an evil spirit, yet retaining his conning. தன்னையறிந்தவன்தலைவனைஅறிவான்.
