akpporuḷ (p. 2) s. [ex. அகம், mind, et பொருள்.] Rules for amatory poems, அ கப்பொருள்விதி. 2. Rules for reasoning, தர்க் கவிதி. 3. mental enjoyments in love, இன் பம். 4. A book treating of mental delectation, ஓரிலக்கணம். அகப்பொருள் is developed in these three constituents, viz., 1. முதற்பொருள், primary arrangements of nature with regard to (a) நிலம், soil, in five varieties, and (b) பொழுது, time in two grand divisions. 2. கருப்பொருள், natural peculiarities incidental to each of the divisions of the soil under 14 heads viz., (a) ஆரணங்கு, peculiar gods belonging to a place, tutelary deities or penates, (b) உயர்ந் தோர், chiefs or lords of the district, (c) இழிந்தோர், subjects or inhabitants under them, (d) புள், birds, (e) விலங்கு, beasts, (f) ஊர், city or town, (g) நீர், water, (h) பூ, flowers, (i) மரம். trees, (j) உணா, food, (k) பறை, drum, (l) யாழ், musical instruments, (m) பண், tune, and (n) தொழில், occupation, trade or mode of earning a livelihood. 3. உரிப்பொருள், essential characteristics of lovers. The subject matter of this treatise, to which the two former are auxiliary or conducive, is developed in five dispositions or actions, either mental or coporal, viz., (a) புணர்தல், union or the state in which husbands and wives are together in their family, (b) பிரிதல், separation when for lawful purposes, (c) இருத்தல், the state in which they continue solitary, especially the bride, (d) ஊடல், love quarrels, (e) இ ரங்கல், weeping and lamentation in any period of their life for any cause. These five characteristics are respectively ascribed to the above five species of soil, as appropriately adapted to their nature, as புணர்தல் to குறிஞ்சி, பிரிதல் to பாலை, இருத்தல் to முல்லை, ஊடல் to மருதம், and இரங்கல் to நெய்தல். இந் த ஐந்து ஒழுக்கத்தையுங்குறித்துப் பாடும்பொழுது அத தற்குக்குறித்த திணையிலுள்ள கருப்பொருள்களையெடுத் துப் பாடுதன்முறையாம். iẕ (p. 55) க்கிறேன், ந்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To lose, forfeit, to be bereaved of, to suffer loss, இழந்துபோக. இழப்பு, v. noun. Loss, privation, forfeiture, இழந்துவிடுகை. இழப்புணி, s. One who has lost a child, a husband, property, &c. இழவு, v. noun. Loss, deprivation, forfeiture, bereavement, நஷ்டம். 2. Death, மரணம். அந்தவீட்டிலேயிழவுபட்டபாடாயிருக்கிறது...... There is affliction in that house, as if a death had occurred there. இழவுகாத்தல், v. noun. [vul.] Keeping close to the house--as mourners till after the eighth day of the funeral ceremony. இழவுகாரன்--இழவுக்குரியவன், s. The chief mourner at the funeral. இழவுகொடுக்க--இழவுக்கடிக்க, inf. To mourn at a funeral, to condole with, to bewail the dead--as women do, beating their breasts, &c. அப்படிச்செய்துபோட்டு அவனோடே இழவு கொடுக்கிறதார்? Who will expose himself to be troubled by him, for doing so? இழவுகொண்டாடுதல், v. noun. Mourning for the dead, accompained by external gestures, lamentations, beating the breast, &c., either at the funeral, or at stated periods afterwards. இழவுக்குப்போக, inf. To go to condole with. இழவுசொல்ல, inf. To invite to, or notify concerning a funeral. இழவுவிழுதல், v. noun. Dying-a word used in imprecations, &c. அவனுக்கிழவுவிழ. May death fall upon him. இழவுவினவ, inf. To condole with mourners, inquiring after the dead, embracing, &c. இழவுவீடு, s. A house where a death has taken place. இழவோலை, s. A funeral notice or invitation, a funeral letter or ola, சாவோலை. 33)

uṟu (p. 67) கிறேன், உற்றேன், வேன், உற, v. n. To be, to exist, உண்டாக. 2. To feel, experience, suffer, enjoy, experience sensations--as heat, cold, பரிசிக்க. 3. To be in contact, to join closely, unite with, combine, கூட. 4. To happen, occur, befall -- as a good, or evil, சம்பவிக்க. 5. To accrue--as riches, சேர. 6. To profit, turn to account, பயனுற. 7. To obtain, கிடைக்க. 8. To arrive at, reach, வர. 9. To belong to peculiarly, to be appropriate, பொருந்த. 1. To be situated at, or be in a place, இரு க்க. 11. To dwell, reside, தங்க. (p.)-Note. This word is often joined to verbals or verbal roots to form new verbs, and the infinitive and other parts are used adverbially to express intensity, entireness, &c.--as குழுற்றது, it surrounded; ஊடுறச்சென் றது, it pierced, or penetrated. உறச்சிவந்தது. It is become very red. உறவளைக்கும்வில். A bow bent to the utmost. சுகமுறுநித்திரை. Refreshing sleep. கிலேசமுற்றேன். I became sorrowful. விருப்பமுற்றேன். I have conceived a desire. இன்பமுற்றேன். I was rejoiced. பயமுற்றேன். I grew frightened. நோயுறும்போது. When sickness befalls-பாவியருறும்பழி. The evil endured by the wicked for their sins. (இராமா.) சொல்லலுற்றேன்--சொல்லுற்றேன். I said, I have treated on--a formal or dignified mode of expression among authors. மீகீழிதழுறப்பம்மப்பிறக்கும். The letters ப் and ம் are produced by the contact of the upper and lower lips. (நன்.) முந்தினார்பின்னுறக்கடுகவோடினான். He ran so swiftly that all who started before him were left behind. உறவற்ற, inf. To dry up entirely. உறுந்தருணம்--உறுந்தறுவாய், s. Emergency, exigency, particular juncture. உறுவதுகூறல், v. noun. Giving an indirect answer to a question, எண்வகை விடையிலொன்று. உற்ற, rel. part. Uncommonly devoted, trusty. உற்றசெய்தி, s. True report, true news. உற்றது, appel. n. The thing as it is, the whole of it. உற்றதுசொல்ல, inf. To speak the truth. உற்றதுசொல்லஅற்றதுபொருந்தும். By telling the truth, misunderstandings are adjusted; truth is the surest resource through life. உற்றபண்புரைப்போர், s. Messengers, தூதர். (p.) உற்றமனிதன், s. A fit or proper person to transact an affair, one who can be trusted. உற்றவன், s. A friend, a relation, உறவோன். உற்றவிசேஷம், s. A proper or suitable expression. உற்றளவு, s. An accurate, genuine, fair measure, சரியளவு. 2. Genuine state of things, real news, உள்ளதன்மை. உற்றறிய, inf. To feel by the touch, be sensible to touch--as plants, &c., பரிசித்துணர. 2. To experience, to know by experience, பயின்றறிய. உற்றாண்மை, s. [prov. prop. உற்ற வுரிமை.] Interest as among near relatives and friends. 2. Close or intimate friendship, attachment. உற்றாண்மைபேச, inf. To speak for--as a near relative, or friend interested in one's welfare. உற்றாராய, inf. To investigate deeply, attentively, minutely, &c. உற்றார்--உற்றோர், s. Relations, உறவோர். 2. Friends, சிநேகர். உற்றிடம், s. An emergency, exigency, ஆபத்து. (p.) 2. (Rott.) A refuge, அடைக்காலம். உற்றிடத்துதவ, inf. To help on an emergency. உற்றுக்கேட்க, inf. To listen attentively. உற்றுப்பார்க்க, inf. To look steadfastly. 2. To examine minutely. உற்றுழி, s. Emergency, exigency, time of expected evil, imminent danger, &c., வருத்தமானகாலம். புலம்புற, inf. To utter lamentation. பயமுற, inf. To be afraid. கையுறாப்பொருள், s. A thing which does not come near to hand; i. e. which is obtained with great difficulty. உரனுற, inf. To obtain strength or force. உறல், v. noun. Being near, coming, approaching. உறுபு, v. noun. Costiveness, thickness, narrowness, செறிவு. 2. Abundance, plenty, மிகுதி. உறுவிக்க, inf. oppāri (p. 82) s. Comparison, similarity, likeness, ஒத்தபாவனை. 2. A funeral elegy, lamentation or episode sung by women and abounding with comparisons between the deceased and other objects, அ ழுகையிலொப்பனையிடுகை. மக்களே போல்வர்கயவர்அவரன்னவொப்பாரியாங்க ண்டதில். The base among men are formed like others, we see no two classes of beings that so much resemble each other. (குறள்.) ஒப்பாரிகொள்ளுதல்--ஒப்பாரிபிடி த்தல், v. noun. Esteeming one as a near relation because of his resemblance to a deceased member of the family. ஒப்பாரிக்காரன், s. One so esteemed. ஒப்பாரிசொல்ல, inf. To sing a funeral elegy for a deceased relative. ஒப்பாரியிட்டழ, inf. To sing an elegy with wailing.--Note. This is frequently done with great pathos and the intensity of feeling is heightened by numerous references to the beauty and excellency of the deceased--as உன்பல் லழகின்பாவனையைப் பார்த்தநமன்விடானே, the regent of the dead, fascinated by the beauty of thy teeth, would not pass thee over. 15)

ōlm (p. 84) s. Sound, noise, roar, சத்தம். 2. A cry of lamentation, appeal to, or invocation of the deity, அபயக்குரல். 3. Snake, பாம்பு. (Rott.) 4. The sea, கடல். (p.) மூர்த்தியே--ஓலம்--ஓலம். Swamy, help, help (I cry to thee for aid). ஓலமிடுதல், v. noun. Calling on a deity, or superior for help. invoking audibly, அபயமிடுதல். 2. Calling or weeping aloud. ஓலமிட்டழுகிறாள். She weeps with a loud voice. ஒருத்தனேயுன்னையோலமிட்டலறியுலகெலாந் தேடியுங்காணேன். O thou the only God, I invoked thy aid in a weeping tone and sought for thee in vain the whole world over. kẕi (p. 98) s. A kind of thread, cotton, yarn, silk, &c., a hawk, a knot, a tie, நூற் சுருள். 2. Salt-pans, உப்பளம். 3. Shallow sea waters, salt rivers, salt marshes, உப் பாறு. 4. Lute-stick, stick for playing on the lute, a plectrum, யாழினையிசைக்குங்கருவி. 5. A rod, a cudgel, a staff, a branch, a twig, a switch, கொம்பு. 6. adj. and adv. kū (p. 133) A compound letter of க் and ஊ. 2. s. The earth--as கு, பூமி. 3. (Sans. Koo, sounding) Clamor, கூக்குரல். கூகூவென--கூகாவென, inf. To bawl out, to utter loud cries, lamentation, &c. 2. To complain. 3. To be constantly calling, whooping, scolding, driving to work. கூகூவென்றலறியழுதான். He cried with a loud screeching sound. கூக்குரல், s. To be choked, or stifled in the throat. நெஞ்சடைப்பு--நெஞ்சடைவாதம், s. Obstruction in the chest, ஓர்நோய். நெஞ்சழிதல், v. noun. Failing or being overwhelmed, as the heart with sorrow, or fear. 2. Loss of consciousness, through sorrow, fear, drunkenness, &c. 3. Being overcome with lust; losing self-control. நெஞ்சறிய, inf. [as an adverb.] Consciously. நெஞ்சறியப்பொய்சொல்லலாமோ. Can you knowingly lie? நெஞ்சறிவிளக்கம், s. A treatise. நெஞ்சன், s. [in combin.] A hard-hearted person. See கன்னெஞ்சகன், வன்னெஞ்சகன். 2. [prov.] A bold, daring person, துணி வுடையோன். 3. A person of self-importance, இடும்பன். நெஞ்சாங்கட்டை, s. The breast-bone, as நெஞ்செலும்பு. 2. You have put a stone in my breast, used in lamentation for the dead. நெஞ்சிலேதெண்டல், v. noun. [prov.] Affecting the breast--as wind, spasm, or cramp, நெஞ்சிற்றடுக்க. நெஞ்சிளைக்க, inf. To become fearful, timid, cowardly. நெஞ்சிற்பாரம், s. (fig.) Burden or weight of responsibility oppressing the heart. 2. Sorrow of heart. நெஞ்சுகரிப்பு--நெஞ்சுக்கரிப்பு, v. noun. A nausea in the throat. நெஞ்சுகாய, inf. To become dry, gnawing, &c., as the breast in disease, causing thirst, &c. 2. [prov.] To faint as the heart through sorrow, fear, &c. நெஞ்சுக்கட்டு-நெஞ்சுக்கோழை, s. Pectoral disease from phlegm, as asthma. நெஞ்சுக்குத்து--நெஞ்சுவலி, s. Pain in the chest. நெஞ்சுதட்ட, inf. To tap the breast in defiance, as a challenge. 2. To tap the breast with a boast of doing an exploit. நெஞ்சுதுடித்தல், v. noun. Throbbing of the heart from fear. 2. Sympathizing with one in affliction, பரிதாபப்படல். நெஞ்சுத்தடிமல், s. Catarrh seated in the breast, cold and cough. நெஞ்சுத்துணிகரம்--நெஞ்சுத்துணிவு, s. Boldness of heart, heroism, intrepidity. நெஞ்சுநெஞ்சென்றுகுத்துதல், v. noun. Striking the breast with the tips of the fingers, in bewailing the dead, &c. See மார்படித்தல். நெஞ்சுநோ, s. Pain in the breast. 2. (fig.) Grief of heart. நெஞ்சுபக்கிடுதல், v. noun. Being struck with sudden fear or sorrow. நெஞ்சுபதறுதல், v. noun. Fluttering of the heart at the sight of a distressed object, of unjust suffering in another, or of danger of injustice to one's self. நெஞ்சுபுண்ணாக--நெஞ்சம்புண்ணாக, inf. To be grieved, wounded at heart. நெஞ்சுப்பள்ளம், s. [prov.] Pit of the stomach. நெஞ்சுரம், s. Bold-heartedness. நெஞ்சுரப்பானவன், appel. n. A hardhearted man. See உரம். நெஞ்சுவறட்சி, s. Dryness of the chest when cough causes no expectoration. நெஞ்சுவிடுதூது, s. A poem in which the heart is personified as a messenger to a lover, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். 2. One of the fourteen treatises of the Agama philosophy. See சைவசித்தாந்தம், under சித்தாந் தம். நெஞ்சுறைப்பு, s. Boldness of heart, intrepidity. நெஞ்செரிதல், v. noun. Envying, பொ றாமைப்படுதல். நெஞ்செரிப்பு, v. noun. Nausea from eating to excess, or from eating acids, sweets, &c. 2. Pain in the stomach, heart-burn. 3. (fig.) Envy, பொறாமை. நெஞ்செலும்பு, s.
