kūṭl (p. 133) s. A name of Madura, from the legend that large halls came into existence miraculously, to shelter the people collected there in a time of great rain, மதுரை. 2. A kind of divination, said to have been practised by females, making concentric circles on the ground, in the absence of their lovers, to ascertain as to their return, சுழிக்குங்கூடல். 3. nmpi (p. 270) s. A superior person, a young man, a gentleman, a poetic term of respect, ஆணிற்சிறந்தோன். 2. [also நம்பியான்.] The son of a brahman by a mother of the military race, married in the இராக்கதம் mode, and a worshipper of Vishnu, அரசர்மா தைப் பார்ப்பான் இராக்கதமணஞ்செய்யபிறந்து விட்டு ணுவையருச்சிப்போன். 3. A title of some Vaishnuva gurus. (c.) நம்பியாண்டார்நம்பி, s. A brahman poet in the Carnatic. He wrote the கலித்துறையந்தாதி, treating of the legends of அறுபத்துமூவர். nālu (p. 275) --நால், adj. Four, நான்கு. 2. (fig.) Many, general, multifold, universal, all, பல, as நாலுவித்தையும்.--Note. In combination before, க, ச, த, ப, the ல், becomes ற் and before ஞ, ந, ம, it is changed to ன்; sometimes to லா as நாலாகாரியமும், divers matters, various affairs, concerns, circumstances. நாலுகல்வியும். To be scattered in different directions. நாலுதெருவுந்திரிகிறான். He strolls, or wanders through all the streets. நாலுமுக்கிலுமெதிர்தார்கள். They faced him on all sides. நாலையும்பார்த்துச்செய்யவேண்டும். One should act with due consideration of the whole matter. ஆலும்வேலும்பல்லுக்குறுதிநாலுமிரண்டுஞ்சொல்லுக் குறுதி. As the splint of the banyan and வேல் trees gives strength to the teeth (by rubbing them), so நாலடியார், and குறள், give strength to the speech. நாலடி--நாலடியார், s. The title of a poetical book on morals having four lines to each verse, and four hundred verses; or the book which ascended, according to the legend, four feet against the stream of the river Veiga, at Madura. நாலாஞ்சடங்கு--நாலாநாட்சடங்கு, s. Bathing of the new married pair on the fourth day with the ends of their cloths tied together. நாலாமுறைக்காய்ச்சல், s. Quartan fever. நாலாம்வருணம், s. The Sudras; (lit.) the fourth caste, சூத்திரசாதி. நாலாயிரப்பிரபந்தம், s. Four thousand poems made by twelve ஆழ்வார்கள். நாலாவிதம், s. [probably a change of நானாவிதம்.] Various kinds, varieties, sundry modes, &c. நாலுபேருமறிய--நாலுபேர்அறிய, inf. (adverbially) Publicly, before all, generaly or universally known. நால்வகைத்தோற்றம், s. purāṇam (p. 325) s. Antiquity, பழமை. 2. Ancient story; a purana, a legendary tale containing accounts of gods, heroes, Rishis, &c., பழங்கதை. (c.) புராணம், 18. The eighteen principal puranas are; 1. சைவம், Saiva. 2. காந்தம், Skanda; 3. இலிங்கம், Linga; 4. கூர்மம், Kurma; 5. வாமனம், Vamana; 6. வராகம், Varaka; 7. பௌடிகம் or பவிஷியம், Bhavishyat or prophetic; 8. மச்சியம், Matsya; 9. மார்க்கண்டேயம், Markandeya; 1. பிர மாண்டம், Bra'hmanda or egg of Brahma. According to சதுரகராதி, these are Saiva puranas. 11. நாரதீயம், Naradiya; 12. பாகவதம்; Bagavat, describing the ten incarnations of Vishnu; 13. காரூடம், Garuda; 14. வைணவம், Vaishnava. These four are Vaishnava puranas. 15. பிரமம், Brahma; 16. பதுமம், Patma or the lotus. These two are Brahma puranas. 17. பிரமகைவர்த்தம்; Brahmakaivarta, or transformations of Brahma or Krishna; purana of the sun. 18. ஆக்கினேயம், Agneya, of the god of fire.--Note. The above were all written in Sanscrit and but few of them are yet translated into Tamil. There are also eighteen secondaries, called உபபுராணம், and many of an inferior order, called ஸ்தலபுராணம், written in praise of sacred places. புராணங்கேட்க, inf. To hear the puranas read. The name of a town on the Kâvery, from a whirlpool in the river; the subject of a legend. வலது, appel. n. That which is on the right; oppos. to இடது. 2. See வலம், Sa. வலதுகை, s. The right-hand. வலதுகைப்பாரிசம்--வலதுபாரிசம், s. The right-side. வலத்துமாடு--வலத்தெருது, s. The right-hand, ox, when yoked. வலத்தே. To the right-side, emphatic. வலப்பக்கம்--வலப்புறம்--வலதுகைப் பக்கம்--வலதுகைப்பாரிசம், s. The right-side. வலம்புரி, s. That which is turned to the right. 2. A chank turning to the right, being of great value, commonly வலம்புரிச்சங்கு. 3. The circumgyration of a temple, &c., to the right, பிரதட்சிணம். 4. A shrub, Helicteres Isora, L., ஒரு செடி. வலம்்புரிக்காய், s. The fruit of the above shrub, used medicinally. வலம்புரிப்புல், s. A grass, Andropogon contortum. 9) *
