nūl (p. 279) s. Thread, yarn, string, line, இழை. 2. A literary or scientific treatise, கல்விநூல். 3. Science, system, literature, சாஸ்திரம். 4. Deliberation, counsel, mature consideration, எண்ணம். (சது.) 5. The badge-string of the sacerdotal, the royal and of some mechanical tribes, பூணூல். 6. A string tied round an image in a Roman Catholic Church, in token of a vow, பொருத்தனைநூல். 7. A wedding-badge, தாலிநூல். 8. Carpenter's or mason's line, எற்றுநூல்.--In combination it takes grammatical changes like நால். Of நூல் or sacred learning there are நூ three: 1. முதனூல், an original scientific work regarded as divine, the Vedas; 2. வழிநூல், a work derived from and agreeing with the original, being an enlargement, as the Vedanta; 3. சார்புநூல், a work following the original, secondary, but differing in some particulars; collateral writings, as the Adwitta. நூற்பலகல். A widow; a woman divested of her wedding-badge, தாலியறுத்தவன். நூலிழை, s. A single thread. நூலிழைக்க, inf. To reel yarn, to disentangle yarn from the skein and wind it on the reel, to unwind yarn. நூலுண்டை, s. A ball of thread, yarn, cotton, &c., நூலுருண்டை. 2. A weaver's bobbin with the yarn, தார்க்கெண்டை. நூலுத்தி, s. The proper arrangement of words, as தந்திரவுத்தி. நூலுந்தாலியும். The wedding string and badge. நூலுரைப்போன், appel. n. A teacher. நூலுரையுணர்வோர், appel. n. [pl.] Learned men, கற்றோர். நூலுறிஞ்சி, appel. n. A weaver. (in contempt.) நூலுறுப்பு, s. The component parts of a treatise. See உறுப்பு. நூலெடுக்க, inf. The sentiments or theory of a work, நூலினேற்பாடு. நூல்வழிநிற்றல், v. noun. Acting up to the moral precepts of a book. நூல்விடுதல், v. noun. A skein of thread. நூற்குச்சு, s. A tassel of cotton thread. நூற்குஞ்சம், s. A number of threads composing the warp in a loom. See குஞ்சம். 2. A skein. நூற்குற்றம், s. See சார்பு. நூற்சுருள்--நூற்சுருணை, s. A skein or clew of thread. நூற்பகந்திரம், s. A venereal ulcer on the peritoneum. See பகந்திரம். நூற்படுகு, s. A weaver's warp. நூற்பந்து, s. A ball of thread. நூற்பயன், s. The general ends or objects of literature. See நாற்பொருள். நூற்பழக்கம், v. noun. Acquaintance with science, literature, &c. நூற்பா, s. A kind of அகவல் verse, commonly employed by lexicographers, சூத்திரப்பா. 2. Warp in weaving, தறியிற் பிணைக்கும்பா. நூற்பாவகவல், s. The நூற்பா verse. நூர்புலவர், s. [pl.] Persons of accomplished or distinguished learning. நூற்புறத்திணை, s. Proof from established authority; a term used by Beschi in Tonnool. நூற்புறனடை, s. maṇṭalam (p. 341) s. Circle, sphere, orbit, disc, வட்டம். 2. Disc of the sun or moon. 3. A great circle--as the equator or ecliptic, கிராந்திமண்டலம். 4. A region, world-as of the sun, moon, or clouds, as சத்த மண்டலம். 5. Any circular, or elliptical figure, வலயம். 6. Coil, as of a snake or rope, பாம்புச்சுற்று. W. p. 633. MAN'DALA. 7. These are; 1. அக்கினிமண்டலம், that of fire, in the lower abdomen; 2. ஆதித்த மண்டலம், of the sun, in the stomach and heart; 3. சந்திரமண்டலம், of the moon, in the head and shoulders. The second of the four attitudes in archery. See நிலை. மண்டலமழை, s. Rain extending through the country. மண்டலம்போட--மண்டலமிட, inf. To form into circles or coils, as a snake. 2. To pass round one another--as combatants, or as birds, &c., in a circle, சுற்றிச்சுற்றிவர. 3. To make ornamental, astrological or mystic diagrams, commonly of a circular figure, யந்திரம்வகுக்க. மண்டலவிதி, s. Directions for making diagrams, for worship, &c. மண்டலபுருடன், s. [also called வீரமண் டலவன்.] A Jaina ascetic equally eminent as a poet and lexicographer. His poetic lexicon சூடாமணிநிகண்டு, outshines all similar productions in Tamil. He also wrote an epic poem in honor of Argha, ஓர்நிகண்டாசிரியன். மண்டலாகாரம், s. A circular figure, course, &c., வட்டவடிவம். மண்டலாபிஷேகம், s.
