accm (p. 7) s. The Agathy class of trees, அகத்தி, Coronilla, L. 2. Fear, dread, alarm, apprehension of danger, பயம். 3. Timidity, diffidence--as one of the fourfeminine qualities, மகளிர்நாற்குணத்திலொன்று. 4. Thinness--as in a metal plate, இலேசு. 5. A plate of metal, தகடு. (p.) 6. [vul.] Pureness, clearness, சரியொப்பு; as அவனச் சந்தந்தைபோலிருக்கிறான். He is the pure likeness of his father. அச்சக்குறிப்பு, s. The use of words which express by their sound, the emotions of fear, surprise, &c., பயப் பாட்டுக்குறி. அச்சுறுத்த, inf. To alarm, intimidate, frighten. 14)

aṉaiya (p. 33) --அன்ன. The crude form of a symbolic verb derived from the demonstrative அ, having two distinct uses. As a term of similitude, it is an affix but regularly conjugated in two forms, being complete in each, in all it persons, varieties and uses, as a verb, a participle, a noun, &c., the same as other symbolic verbs. It also expresses likeness to the person or thing indicated by the word to which it is affixed, உவம வுருபு. 2. It is sometimes equivalent to the simple pronoun; as, அன்னான். Such a man. (p.) Singular. அனையன்--அனையேன். I am like. அனையாய்--அனையை. Thou art like. அனையன்--அனையான். He is like. அன்னான். Such a man. அன்னாள். Such a matron. அன்னது. Such a thing. Plural. அனையெம்--அனையேம்--அனையோம். We are like. அனையிர்--அனையீர். Ye are like. அனையர்--அனையார். They are like. அன்னர்--அன்னார். Such persons. அனைய--அனையன--அன்ன. They (things) are like. அனையமன்னற்கழிவுமுண்டாங்கொலோ? Can such a prince ever be ruined? பவளமனையவாய். The coral-mouthed. எம்மனோர்க்கியம்புமாறரிதே. It is not possible for mortals like me to declare, &c. மயிலன்னாய். You who are (elegant) as a peacock, (addressed to a lady.) 128)

aḷvai (p. 33) s. Measure, a definite quantity, அளவு. 2. Bound, limit, எல்லை. 3. A measure, or thing to measure with, அளவுக்கருவி. 4. A medium of knowledge, காட்சிமுதலியபிரமாணங்கள். 5. The name of a logical work, அளவைநூல். 6. Day, நாள். There are eight ways of obtaining the true knowledge of a thing or occurrence; viz.: 1. காட்சி, by the senses, especially the sight--by experiments, பிரத்தியட்சப்பிர மாணம். 2. அனுமானம், by inference, by drawing conclusions from what has been admitted or is supposed true--as நெருப்பிற்கு வியாப்பியம் புகையென்றறிதல், where smoke is, there is fire. 3. ஆகமம், by the testimony or assertions of great men, either orally or in writing, பெரியோர்வாய்ச்சொல். 4. அரு த்தாபத்தி, by deduction established from premises, அந்நியதாவநுபபத்தி--as இரவிலுணவி ல்லாமற் பகலுண்ணாதவனுக்குப் பருத்தல்கூடாதென் னுமுணர்ச்சி. 5. உவமானம், by similarity or likeness, comparison, மரை பசுப்போலென்னுமு ணர்ச்சி. 6. அபாவம், proof of non-existence-as முன்னில்லை, பின்னில்லை, முழுதுமில்லை, ஒன்றி ன்மற்றொன்றில்லை. 7. ஐதீகம், by traditional testimony--as இம்மாத்திற்பேயுளதென்பது, this tree is haunted by the devil. 8. சம்பவம், proof of co-existence--as ஆயிரத்தினூறுண்டெ னல், where a thousand is, there is a hundred. (p.) அளவையாகுபெயர், s. A metonymy in reference to measure, weight, number, &c. In Nannool, four kinds are given, எண்ணலளவையாகுபெயர், எடுத்தல ளவையாகுபெயர், முகத்தலளவையாகுபெயர், and நீட்டலளவையாகுபெயர். 15) *

One disposed to maintain a course of conduct proper for a king. இயலுவமம், s. [in rhetoric.] A comparison of the properties of different things, பண்புவமை. இயற்சீர், s. The ஆசிரியவுரிச்சீர், verse--a metrical foot of four அசை. See சீர். இயற்சீர்வெண்டளை, s. Combination of two simple or ஆசிரியம் feet, or connection of an ஆசிரியம் foot, ending with a compound அசை, with another beginning with a simple one, or vice versa, மாமுன்னிரையும்விளமுன்னேருமொன்றிவருவது. இயற்சொல், s. A word in common use--in distinction from திரிசொல்-exclusively poetic usage--words understood both by the learned and unlearned. இயற்பெயர், s. Proper or arbitrary names, titles, terms of office, &c., இயல் பாயிடப்பட்டபெயர்; also names of things indicating a whole--as distinguished from parts. 2. Simple or original names --as distinguished from ஆகுபெயர் or derived names, செம்பொருளையுணர்த்தும்பெயர். இயற்றமிழ், s. Natural Tamil, whether common or poetic--as distinguished from இசைத்தமிழ், or Tamil adapted to music, and நாடகத்தமிழ் or dramatic Tamil, in both of which various changes occur in combination, construction, &c., முத்தமிழினொன்று. இயற்றளை, s. Connection of ஆசிரி யம் verse--as ஆசிரியத்தளை. See தளை. இயனூல், s. A system of grammatical rules. இயன்மொழிவாழ்த்து, s. A poem instructing children by the good disposition and behavior of their forefathers, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். 8)

uruvm (p. 65) s. Shape, form, figure, likeness, features, gestures, &c., வடிவம். 2. Beauty, symmetry, அழகு. 3. Image, idol, statue, சொரூபம். 4. Body, human or other, உடல். 5. (p.) Color, good color, நிறம். உருவத்தார்புனையவந்தவொண்டொடி. Adorned with bracelets, the damsel came to invest her lover with a beautiful garland. (நைட.) உருவங்காட்டி, s. A glass, mirror, looking glass. உருவசாத்திரம், s. The knowledge of the shape, feature, lines, &c., of the human body, including palmistry and physiognomy, considered as indicating the moral and mental characteristics of the individual. See கலைஞானம். உருவமாற, inf. To be transformed. உருவமெடுக்க, inf. To assume a form--as a deity, வடிவமெடுக்க. 35)

ēkam (p. 76) s. Unit in arithmetic, ஒன்று. 2. That which is unique, absolute, ஒப்பற் றது. 3. Solitariness, தனிமை. 4. Union, unison, உடன்பாடு. 5. The total, the whole, good and bad--great and small, altogether, மொத்தம். In this meaning it seems limited to the oblique cases. Wils. p. 17. EKA. ஏககாலத்திலே. At once, in a single act. 2. Coeval, contemporary, together. ஏகத்துக்கிருட்டு. It is very dark. என்ன, inter. What? what kind? what manner? why? யாது. 2. Participle third person plural, irrational class of the symbolic verb என், but used in common for the singular, also instead of என்னது or எற்று, குறிப்புப்பெயரெச்சம். என்னத்துக்காக. [prop. என்னதற்காக.] On what account, why? என்னத்தைக்கண்டாய். [prop. என்னதை.] What did you see? என்னென்ன. What--distributively. அதென்னவோ. What can that be? 2. I know not what. பாடல்பெறானேபலர்மெச்சவாழானே--நாடறியநன் மணங்ககணாட்டானே, பேடி--இவன்வாழும்வாழ்க்கை யிருங்கடல்சூழபாரிற்--கவிழ்ந்தென்னமல்காந்தென்கா ண். Of what utility in this sea-girt land is an hermaphrodite, whom no panegyrist has ever celebrated, and who has not obtained the praises of the multitude, nor sought fame by charitably aiding the indigent to marry? ஏ ஏகத்துக்குமூந்நூறு. Altogether three hundred. ஏகசகடு. [vul.] Altogether, in the gross, in the lump, மொத்தம். 2. Average, சரிசரிவிலை. ஏகசக்கரம், s. Sovereignty, monarchy exercised by a paramount king, ஓராழி. 2. Name of a city, ஏகச்சக்கரபுரம். Wils. p. 17. EKACHAKRA. ஏகசக்கரக்குடை, s. Independent sovereignty, monarchy, தனிக்குடை. ஏகசக்கரமாயாள, inf. To rule with supreme power. ஏகசக்கரவர்த்தி--ஏகசக்கராதிபதி, s. A paramount sovereign, a monarch, an emperor, இராசாதிராசன். 2. The Supreme Being, கடவுள். ஏகசக்கரவனம், s. A forest in which the Pandus retired for some time. ஏகசமன்--ஏகசமானம், s. Uniformity, likeness, smallness, ஒருநிகர். ஏகசரம், s. The rhinoceros, காண் டாமிருகம். Wils. p. 12. EKACHARA. ஏகசிந்தை, s. Unanimity, ஒரும னது. 2. Implicitness, singleness of purpose, undivided attention, ஒன்றிலேசெல் லுஞ்சிந்தை. ஏகசிந்தையாயிருக்க, inf. To be unanimous. 2. To be intent on, or wholly engaged in a thing. ஏகசுபாவம், s. Uniformity of disposition in a person, ஒரேதன்மை. 2. Similarity of nature in different persons, சமமானசுபாவம். ஏகதந்தன், s. Ganesa--the one tusked--the other having been broken off and cast at his foe கயமுகாசுரன் in combat, விநாயகன். Wils. p. 17. EKADANTA. (p.) ஏகதாளம், s. One of the seven kinds of தாளம், or modes of beating the drum, ஆதிதாளம். Wils. p. 17. EKATALA. எவனோவொருபேயனென்னவோபுலம்பிப்போனான். Some demoniac, who I cannot tell, has passed by, uttering his wailings--spoken in contempt; for என்னவோ, in colloquial style என்னமோ is sometimes used improperly. உனக்கவனென்னவேண்டும். oppṉai (p. 82) v. noun. Adorning, decorating, embellishing, attiring, அலங்கரிப்பு. 2. s. Simile, comparison, allegory, உவ மை. 3. Proof, evidence, parable, instance from history, exemplification, திருட்டாந்தம். 4. Representation, likeness, resemblance, imitation, symbol, emblem, effigy, பாவனை. 5. Levelness, evenness, smoothness, parallel, சமம். ஒப்பனைக்குச்சப்பாணிகொட்டுகிறார்கள். They clap their hands in feigned congratulation. ஒப்பனைகாட்ட, inf. To exhibit a likeness whether picture, or bust, ஒப்பு க்காட்ட. 2. To adduce proof or illustration by a parallel instance from history, திருட்டாந்தங்காட்ட. ஒப்பனைசொல்ல, inf. To use comparison, ஒப்புச்சொல்ல. ஒப்பனைபண்ண, inf. To decorate, adorn, அலங்கரிக்க. 2. To prove, demonstrate, திருட்டாந்தங்காட்ட. 3. To level, to smooth, சமனாக்க. ஒப்பனையிட, inf. To compare. 14)

oppāri (p. 82) s. Comparison, similarity, likeness, ஒத்தபாவனை. 2. A funeral elegy, lamentation or episode sung by women and abounding with comparisons between the deceased and other objects, அ ழுகையிலொப்பனையிடுகை. மக்களே போல்வர்கயவர்அவரன்னவொப்பாரியாங்க ண்டதில். The base among men are formed like others, we see no two classes of beings that so much resemble each other. (குறள்.) ஒப்பாரிகொள்ளுதல்--ஒப்பாரிபிடி த்தல், v. noun. Esteeming one as a near relation because of his resemblance to a deceased member of the family. ஒப்பாரிக்காரன், s. One so esteemed. ஒப்பாரிசொல்ல, inf. To sing a funeral elegy for a deceased relative. ஒப்பாரியிட்டழ, inf. To sing an elegy with wailing.--Note. This is frequently done with great pathos and the intensity of feeling is heightened by numerous references to the beauty and excellency of the deceased--as உன்பல் லழகின்பாவனையைப் பார்த்தநமன்விடானே, the regent of the dead, fascinated by the beauty of thy teeth, would not pass thee over. 15)

oru (p. 83) adj. [changed from ஒன்று, which is the root.] Before vowels and sometimes before consonants, the உ often is dropped and the ஒ lengthened--as ஓரிலை, a leaf. In some connexions and with appropriate emphasis, it means sameness, singularity, peculiarity, specialness, celebrity, &c. ஒருகூடுமுடைந்தவனொன்பதுகூடுமுடைவான். . . . . He who has fabricated one bird's cage may fabricate nine. [prov.] ஒருகண்டசீராக, adv. In one uninterrupted course, monotonously, invariably, constantly. ஒருகண்டசீராகமழைபெய்கிறது. It rains without intermission. ஒருகண்டசீராகக்கூப்பிடுகிறான். He continues calling. ஒருகண்டசீராய்நடக்க. To continue unchanged. ஒருகண்ணுக்குறங்க, inf. To enjoy a short nap. ஒருகண்மூடியொருகண்விழித்தல். Partiality, especially to children. ஒருகாரியம், s. [prov.] One thing, something, a term used in calling or diverting attention, or in stating a reason, &c., in discussion. ஒருகால், s. A foot or one foot, ஒற்றைக்கால். 2. adv. [improp. ஒருக்கால்.] Once, sometime or other, for once, sometimes, ஒருமுறை. ஒருகாலிலேநிற்கிறான். He insists on (going, having, &c.), he is firmly resolved. ஒருகாலும். Never. ஒருகாலுஞ்செய்யான். He never does it, he never will do it, he never can do it. ஒருகாலுமில்லை. Never, at no time, not once. ஒருகாலுமுன்னைக்கைவிடேன். I will never forsake thee. ஒருகாலும்பொய்சொல்லான். He will never tell a lie. ஒருகாலே, adv. In great abundance, greatly. 2. Once, at once, continuously. ஒருகாலேகூட்டமாய்ப்போக. To go together in one continuous company. ஒருகாலே தேடிக் குவித்துக்கொண்டான். He has laid up a vast quantity. ஒருகாலேபேசுகிறானொன்றும்விளங்கவில்லை. He speaks a great deal, but nothing is understood. ஒருகாலேயுறுக்கிக்கொண்டுவருகிறார். He is scolding much. ஒருகாலேயெல்லாங்கொடுக்கிறது. To give all at once. ஒருகாலேயெல்லாஞ்செய்ய. To do all at once, to finish the whole. ஒருகாலேயெல்லாம்வாங்க. To receive altogether. ஒருகாற்கண்டசீராயிருக்க. To be unchangeable. ஒருகாற்செய்தவனிருகாற்செய்வான். He who has done so once, may do it again. இன்னமொருகால். Again, once more. மாற்றானுமொருகாலிதஞ்சொல்லுகிறான். Even one's foe may sometimes speak to one's advantage. ஒருகிடை, v. noun. Being bedridden; confinement by sickness or grief to a recumbent posture, கிடந்தகிடை. ஒருகிடையாகக்கிடத்தல். Lying still, unable or unwilling to rise. ஒருகுடி, s. The relations of one family. ஒருகுடித்தமர், s. Persons of the same family, near relatives--commonly on the paternal side, தாயத்தார். ஒருகூட்டு, s. Close union, combination between two persons, taking another's part, ஒருசேர்க்கை. ஒருகை, s. (fig.) Party, union, conjunction, combination, ஒருவகுப்பு, lit. one hand. அவர்களொருகையாயிருக்கிறார்கள். They are in combination, united in a conspiracy. அவர்களொருகை இவர்களொருகை. They are opposite parties. ஒருகைபரிமாறுதல், v. noun. Dealing out one course at table. ஒருகைபார்த்தல், v. noun. A partial fast during which one meal only is taken in the day, on Sunday in reference to the sun, by persons with diseased eyes; on Monday to Siva to cure diseases generally, &c., ஒருபொழுதுண்டல். ஒருசந்திப்பானையைநாயறியுமா. Can a dog distinguish a sacred vessel? ஒருசந்தியிருக்க, inf. To make but one meal a day. ஒருசாயல், s. Being alike, ஒருவி தம். 2. Singularity, அபூர்வம். ஒருசாயலாயிருக்க, inf. To be of the same likeness. ஒருசாய்வு, v. noun. A leaning, of one party, ஒருபட்சம். 2. [prov.] At once, altogether, ஒருமிக்க. 3. Without intermisson, continuously, இடைவிடாமை. ஒருசார்--ஒருசார்பு, s. Absoluteness, positiveness, indispensableness, by all means, நிச்சயம். 2. One side of a case or question, favor to one party where two are concerned, ஒருசார்வு. ஒருதலையாகச்சொல்லுதல். Speaking positively. 2. Giving partial judgment. ஒருதலையாய்ச்சேருதல். All holding to one point steadfastly. இவ்விகாரமொருதலையன்று. This grammatical change is not absolute. ஒருதலைக்காமம், s. Love on one side not yet reciprocated, love-intrigue, கைக்கிளை. ஒருதலைதுணிதல், v. noun. [in literature.] An author's choice or decision between two different sentiments found in the writings of others, 32--உத்தியி லொன்று. ஒருதலைநோவு--ஒருதலைவலி, s. Pain on one side of the head. ஒருதலைப்பாக்கு, s. [prov.] An imperfect arecanut, defective on one side. ஒருதலைவழக்கு--ஒருதலைநியாயம், s. Partiality in giving judgment, statements, descriptions, &c., leaning to one side or party, an ex-party statement. ஒருதலைவழக்குநூலினுஞ்செம்மை. The statement made by only one party in a suit is straighter than a line; i. e. one tale is good till another is told. ஒருதன்மை, s. Being of one and the same kind, ஒருவிதம். 2. Incomparableness, ஒப்பற்றதன்மை. 3. Unchangeableness, மாறாமை. ஒருதாரை, s. One edge. 2. adv. [prov.] At once, altogether, without interruption, ஒருமிக்க. ஒருதாரைக்கத்தி, s. One edged sword. ஒருத்தன், s. (fem. ஒருத்தி.) One person, one man, one only, denoting speciality, either good or bad. ஒருத்தருமில்லை. There is nobody. ஒருத்தரும்வரவில்லை. Thou only art the Lord. அவனொருத்தன்வந்தான். He only is come. 2. That fellow is come. ஒருநெல்லுப்பெருவெள்ளை, s. [prov.] A kind of rice, ஓர்வகைநெல். ஒருநேரம், s. An unseasonable time. இவனிராத்திரியொருநேரத்தில்என்வீட்டுக்குவந் தான். He came last night to my house at an unseasonable hour. ஒருபடி, adv. Tolerably, ordinarily, ஒருவாறு. 2. In some degree, to some extent, ஒருவிதம். ஒருபடிசெய்துமுடித்தார்கள். They have done it, finished it, &c. with great labor. 2. They have done it defectively, exceptionably, not thoroughly. ஒருபடித்தாய். So and so, tolerably. ஒருபடியாக, inf. [used as an adverb.] In some sense, manner, degree, partly. 2. Tolerably, passably, in some way or other. 3. With great pains, with difficulty--as in escaping, &c. ஒருபவம், s. [as ஒருபிறப்பு.] One birth. ஒருபார்வை, s. Steadfast look, directing the eyes to one object, ஒருநோ க்கம். ஒருபாவொருபஃது. s. A பிரபந்தம் or poem of ten verses. ஒருபிடி, s. Firm determination, உறுதி. 2. Firm trust or dependence, ஒரேபற்று. 3. Stubbornness, persistence or perseverance, பிடிவாதம். ஒருபிரகாரம், adv. After a fashion, in a certain degree, to some extent. உன்முகமொருபிரகாரமாகத்தோன்றுகிறது. Your countenance appears strange. அவனொருபிரகாரமானவன். He is a singular kind of man. ஒருபுடை, s. In some respects, partly, to some extent. ஒருபுடைசெல்லல்--ஒருபுடைசே றல், v. noun. Going on one side, ஒருபக்க மாய்ப்போதல். ஒருபுடையொப்புமை, v. noun. Having an imperfect analogy. ஒருபொருட்டீவகம், [in rhetoric.] An ellipsis by which one word qualifies, or is qualified by a succession of dependent words, ஓரலங்காரம். ஒருபொருட்பன்மொழி, s. [in prosody.] A member of a certain verse, கொச்சகக்கலிப்பாவி னுளொன்று. ஒருபோக்கு, s. The same manner, ஒருவிதம். 2. v. noun. Going at one time, ஒருமுறைபோகுதல். ஒருபோக்காய்ப்போக, inf. Lukshmi, who art created as the model of women. கட்டளைகேட்க, inf. To obey an order, to execute a commission, to listen or to attend to the issuing of orders. கட்டளைகொடுக்க, inf. To give permission, to grant privileges, warrant. கட்டளைக்கல், s. A touchstone, உரைகல். 2. Weight, நிறைகல். கட்டளைக்குரு--கட்டளைச்சுவாமி, s. The principal priest for the time being--so used by the Romanists. கட்டளைசொல்ல, inf. To give or publish an order, to publish a notice. கட்டளைச்சட்டம், s. Regulations, enactments, edicts, statutes. கட்டளைத்தம்பிரான், s. One of a religious order who acts as an overseer or burser in a temple, or charitable institution, receiving the rents and dues, making disbursements and seeing that the services are properly conducted. வாரக்கட்டளைத்தம்பிரான், s. An overseer of a religious order who is gratuitously fed by the community, receiving food from the same family every seventh day. கட்டளைபண்ண, inf. To command, direct, order. கட்டளைபிடித்துவார, inf. [prov.] To cut ola by a rule. கட்டளைப்படிவர, inf. To come regularly. 2. To come according to order. கட்டளைமீற, inf. To break or violate an order. கட்டளையிட, inf. To order, command, direct, decree, prescribe, charge. 2. To grant, bestow. 3. To pass a law or edict, to utter a decision. நமக்கீசனிட்டகட்டளையிதுதான். This is just what God has allowed us. வாரக்கட்டளைமடம், s. An hotel where boiled rice is distributed weekly. 27)

kuḷvi (p. 130) s. A kind of hornet or wasp, வேட்டுவன். 2. The மலைப்பச்சை tree. 3. (Rott.) A shrub, the காட்டுமல்லிகை. குளவிபுழுவைத்தன்னிறமாக்குகிறதுபோல.
