A lewd woman, குடும்பத்தைவிட்டுவெளிப்பட்டவள். எடுபட்டுப்போக, inf. To be raised --as a siege. 2. To be abolished. 3. To be defeated. அங்கிருந்தபள்ளிக்கூடம்எடுபட்டுப்போயிற்று.... The school which existed there formerly has been abolished. உன்னால்நானெடுபட்டுப்போவேனா. Am I to be defeated by you? எடுபாடு, s. Celebrity, a high style of living, notoriety in a good or bad sense, உயர்ச்சி. 2. Abolition, அழிகை. 3. Gaiety, in dress, in a woman, a lax, or lascivious disposition, மேட்டிமை. எடுப்பிக்க, inf. To cause to raise, or lift up. மனிதவதாரமெடுக்க, inf. To assume the human form, to become incarnate. வெறியெடுக்க, inf. To be intoxicated. வெறியெடுத்தவன், s. One who is intoxicated. பெயரெடுக்க, inf. To assume an appearance, a name, a character, &c.; to acquire a name, celebrity. நூலெடுக்க, inf. To disentangle thread. வாயாலெடுக்க--வாயிலெடுக்க, inf. To vomit. தொழிலெடுக்க, inf. To enter upon an occupation. 2. To suspend one from office. பூவெடுக்க, inf. To gather flowers. கிணறெடுக்க, inf. To dig a well. 2. [prov.] To select a spot for a well in reference to the situation of the house and other surrounding objects that ill luck may not result, as also to the nature of a soil or the depth at which water may be found, judged of by the produce of the land, &c. வயிறெடுக்க--வயிறுகடுப்பெடுக்க, inf. To have a looseness. தானெடுத்துமொழிதல், v. noun. [in works of science.] The adoption of rules, or language from other authors. See உத்தி. எடுப்பு, v. noun. The act of taking off, taking up, தூக்குகை. 2. Elevation, உயரம். 3. Taking in hand, undertaking attempt, engagement, தொடங்குகை. 4. Insolence. arrogance, pride, haughtiness, superciliousness, இறுமாப்பு. 5. Elation, a style of living above one's rank, circumstances, மேட்டிமை. 6. Abusive words, நிந்தை. எடுத்தஎடுப்புவிடான். He will not desist from his purpose. வாயெடுப்பாய்ப்பேசுகிறவன். One who talks arrogantly. ஒருவன்மேலெடுப்பெடுத்தல். Publishing the faults of another. எடுப்பாயிருக்க, inf. To be high. எடுப்பானவன், s. A haughty person, an upstart, one who lives above his rank or circumstances, மேட்டிமைக் காரன். எடுப்புச்சாய்ப்பு, Gentility, genteel and obliging behavior, united with display, pomp, grandeur, &c., உயர்வுதாழ்வு. எடுப்புண்டது, appel. n. That which is taken and carried away. எடுப்புத்தேர், s. A small portable shrine for the conveyance of an idol on men's shoulders--opp. to இழுப்புத்தேர். கல்லெடுப்பு, s. A funeral rite. எடை, v. noun. eẕu (p. 75) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், எழ, v. n. To rise, ascend, get up, rise by one's own power, to rise as a thing by its own levity, rise as a heavenly body, a bird, a kite, &c., to soar, &c., எழும்ப. 2. To stir, be excited, roused, &c., மனங்கிளர. 3. To become resuscitated, rise to life, உயிரடைந்தெழும்ப. 4. To rise to eminence, தலைமைப்பட. 5. To rise and spread as a rumor, பரம்ப. 6. To rise as wind, clouds, &c., கிளம்ப. 7. To rise as a sound, singing, talking, clamor, &c., ஆரவாரமெழ. 8. To rise as a tree, grow larger, swell, to expand as breasts, increase in stature, rise as a building, shoot, sprout, spring up, உயர. 9. To happen, occur, arise, come on, சம்பவிக்க. 1. To become instrumental to, ஏதுவாக. 11. To remove from a dwelling, lodging, village, &c., குடியெழும்ப. 12. To rise in price, விலையேற. அவனுக்குக்கையெழவில்லை. His hand does not open to give any thing. அதைச்செய்யவெனக்குக்கைகாலெழவில்லை. My hands and feet would not stir (rise) to do such a thing. அதைச்சொல்லநாவெழாது. My tongue will not stir (rise) to speak so. கூரேயிறெழாதகுழவி. A babe that has not yet teethed. எழுஞாயிறு, s. The rising sun, உதயாதித்தன். 2. Quinsy, a mortal disease which begins with the rising sun; when it begins in the night it is termed படுஞாயிறு. (Mat. Ind. Opp.) எழுந்தபடி--எழுந்தமானம், s. At random, in an unpremeditated manner, carelessly, மனதிலேதோன்றியபடி. எழுந்தருள, inf. To rise, become present or manifest as the divinity in an idol on consecration; to be present as a great personage, &c., தோன்ற. 2. To repair to a place--as a sage, holy person, a king, &c., பெரியோர்வர. எழுந்தருளுநாயகர்--எழுந்தருளும் விக்கிரகம், s. The secondary idol in a temple, உச்சவவிக்கிரகம், representing the same deity as the first, carried about in processions while the other remains stationary--opp. to the மூலவிக்கிரகம். எழுந்தருள்படி, s. A procession of heathen gods. எழுந்திருக்க, inf. To rise, ascend, get up, &c., எழ, spoken chiefly of men. --Note. This is more full and expressive than எழ, alone. எழுந்துபோக, inf. To depart, to go to meet a person. எழுந்தேற்றம், s. A Roman catholic procession, உற்சவம். 2. Pride, selfconsequence, arrogance, பெருமை. 3. Rashness, presumptuousness, துணிவு. எழுமுகனை, s. The very beginning of a process, or period, தொடக்கம். எழுவான், s. The east, the place of sun-rising, oriens, கிழக்கு, eastern--opp. to படுவான். எழுவான்றொடங்கிப்படுவான்மட்டும். From east to west. என்வீட்டக்கெழுவானிலே. East of my house. எழல்--எழுகை, v. noun. Rising, ascent, எழுச்சி. எழுச்சி, v. noun. Rising, ascent, elevation, எழும்புகை. 2. Stir, excitement, activity, readiness, promptitude, முயற்சி. 3. Haughtiness, aspiring, ambition, resolution, இறுமாப்பு. 4. A disease, or soreness of the ears, காதிலெழும்புமோர்புண். 5. Inflammation of the eyes, கண்ணோயி லொன்று. எழுச்சிக்கொடி, s. Inflammation of the eyes causing red streaks, கண்ணிற் படருமோர்நோய். எழச்சிபாடுவோன், s. One who sings to rouse a prince, or a great man of a morning. துயிலெழுப்புதல்பாடுவோன். எழுச்சிமுரசம், s. A drum beaten to rouse a king, commandant, garrison, &c. of a morning, துயிலெழுப்புமுரசம். எழுச்சியிலை, s. A leaf to cure ophthalmia, கண்ணோய்மருந்திலை. படையெழுச்சி, s. A military expedition, marching to battle. பள்ளியெழுச்சி, s. A kind of poem sung to rouse princess, &c. from sleep. மேலெழுச்சி--மேலெழுந்தவாரி, [prov.] Superficiality. மேலெழுச்சியாய்ப்பேச, inf. eẕuppu (p. 75) கிறேன், எழுப்பினேன், வேன், எழுப்ப, v. a. To awake, rouse, start, துயிலெழுப்ப. 2. To raise one that is prostrate, or sitting, cause, or help to rise, தூக்க. 3. To raise from the dead, resuscitate, restore to life, உயிரோடெழுப்ப. 4. To raise from sickness, excite, rouse, stimulate, inspire, பலம்வருவிக்க. 5. To instigate, agitate, cause a stir, a quarrel, war, சண் டைமூட்ட. 6. To raise the voice in speaking or singing to a high pitch, இசையெழுப் ப. 7. To dislodge, or eject one, turn out, &c., கிளப்பிவிட. 8. To excite, or inflame the passions, stir up, கோபமுதலியனவெழுப்ப. 9. To raise a building, வீடெழுப்ப. முயலையுமெழுப்பிநாளையுமுச்சுக்காட்டுகிறது. Starting a hare and setting dogs after it; i. e., to excite one to an action and then injure him perfidiously. எழுப்பு, v. noun. Rousing, waking, எழுப்புகை. 18)

ē (p. 76) . One of the seven long vowels, நெட்டுயிரிலொன்று. 2. An arrow, அம்பு. 3. A particle of emphasis, &c., இடைச்சொல். In நன்னூல், it is said to have six different uses: 1. பிரிநிலை, a distinguishing particle-as அவனேசொன்னான், it was he who said it. In some cases, it would be used for self or selves in the plural where the connection demanded it--as he himself said it. 2. வினா, interrogative: அவனேகொண் டான், was it he that bought it? 3. எண், enumeration or copulative--as சாத்தனே கொற்றனே இருவரும்வந்தார், Sattan and Kottan both came; கடலே, கரையே, மரமே, மலரே, வளையே, இவ்வைந்து, the sea, the land, the tree, the flower, the conch, these five. 4. ஈற்றசை or அசைநிலை, a terminate expletive --as மல்லலோங்கெழில்யானைமருமம்பாய்ந்தொளித்த தே, (the weapon) lodged itself in the breast of the beautiful and powerful elephant. 5. தேற்றம், certainty, confidence, appeal, emphasis--as இதுள்ளதே, this is really true; முயற்குக்கோடில்லையே, the hare has no horns. 6. இசைநிறை, a poetic expletive for completing the metre--as ஏஏ இவ ளொருத்திபேடி, she is a hermaphrodite; பேடியோவென்றாரே, he said, is she an hermaphrodite? To these the commentator adds 7. எதிர்மறை, negative as implied by the tones and inflections of the speaker rather than expressed by the particle--as அவன்வந்தானே, he came, did he? implying he did not come. Another may also be given. 8. இகழ்ச்சி, an interjection of contempt--as எஏ--வைத்தியகாரா, oh, oh, (or fie, fie), thou stupid fellow. (p.) 5) *

oṭṭu (p. 81) கிறேன், ஒட்டினேன், வேன், ஒட்ட, v. a. and v. n. To stick on, to stick up, to glue on, cause to cleave or adhere, பொருத்த. 2. To apply, resort, betake one's self to a person for support, protection, to come or be near, or in contact with, to lean on or join one's self to a thing, சார. 3. To use qualifying terms, phrases, adjuncts, &c., அடைகொடுக்க. 4. To lay a wager, to gamble, பந்தயம்வைக்க. 5. To permit, suffer, allow, let, இடங்கொடுக்க. 6. To increase length or breath by addition, to add to, சேர்க்க. 7. To grow lean, be withered, shrunk, &c., to have the skin stick to the bones, be shrivelled as a fruit, &c., சுருங்க. 8. To stand near a wall, a pillar, &c., in order to over-hear, to way-lay, &c., விசேஷங்கேட்கவொளித்துநிற்க. சுட்டமண்ணும்பச்சைமண்ணுமொட்டாது. Burnt earth will not adhere to that which is fresh. ஒட்டி யுலர்வாருறவு. That is friendship which adheres to and suffers with one, lit. which dries with one as the flowers in the tank. இதுனக்கொட்டுமோ. Will this unjust gain, &c., abide with you? உலகத்தோடொட்டவொழுகல். Acting conformably to the world. (குறள்.) மரத்தோடொட்ட. To hide one's self behind a tree. தோலெல்லாமெலும்போடொட்டிப்போயிற்று..... The skin cleaves to the bones. ஒருவனையொட்டிப்பிழைக்க. To subsist by means of another. அவனைவரவொட்டும். [Contracted in colloquial use to அவன்வரட்டும்.] Let him come. சொல்லவொட்டான். He will not permit me to speak. ஒட்டஅறுக்க, inf. To cut off short or level with the ground--as corn; to cut off altogether, to sever--as an ear, a tail, &c. ஒட்டஇணைகக, inf. To nail in close. ஒட்டக்கட்ட, inf. To tie short. 2. To tuck or gather up the clothes well so that no part may hang down. 3. To tie a necklace close to the neck. ஒட்டப்பட்டினிபோட--ஒட்டப் போட, inf. To make a patient fast in order to cure his disease, or to put on short commons a disobedient person for disciplinary purposes. ஒட்டவடிக்க, inf. To drain quite off. ஒட்டவிட, inf. To let one join or have access to one. 2. To set cocks together preparatory for fighting. ஒட்டாக்கொற்றி, s. A cow cruel to its calf. 2. A woman unkind to her child or inattentive, unyielding, &c., to her husband. ஒட்டாமலடிக்க, inf. To neglect one who has sought protection. ஒட்டார்--ஒட்டலர், s. Foes, persons that will not unite, பகைவர். (p.) ஒட்டிக்கொள்ள, inf. To cleave, to adhere, &c. 2. To supply a word, &c., understood or wanting to complete the sense. இதனையெல்லாவிடங்களிலுமொட்டிக்கொள்க... Apply this word in every similar instance. ஒட்டித்தப்பியிருக்க, inf. To survive, be left, &c., after a general destruction, sacking clearing, to be out of sight, unnoticed. ஒட்டிப்போக, inf. To go jointly or together. 2. To wax lean, pine. ஒட்டியபுண், s. A contagious eruption. ஒட்டியமேளம், s. A kind of drum. ஒட்டுவியாதி, s. An infectious disease, தொத்துவியாதி. ஒட்டுறவு, s. Near relationship, great friendship. அறுந்தகாதொட்ட, inf. To join an ear that has been torn or cut. பந்தயமொட்ட, inf. To lay a wager. ஒட்டல், v. noun. Sticking, adhering, pasting, &c. 2. s. Shortness. ஒட்டல்வயிறு, s. A shrunk belly. ஒட்டற்காது, s. Short ears or ears with the lobes not hanging. ஒட்டு, v. noun. Adhesion, contact, attachment, conjunction, friendship, cement, சேர்க்கை. 2. Being close to a wall, tree, &c., generally for some bad purpose, lurking to over-hear, to ensnare birds, &c., பதிவிருக்கை. 3. Bidding more--as at a sale, விலையுயர்த்திக்கேட்கை. ஒட்டுக்கண், s. Inflamed eyes with the lids adhering. ஒட்டுக்காய்ச்சல், s. A contagious fever, தொத்துக்காய்ச்சல். ஒட்டுக்காய்ச்சலாய்க்காய, inf. To have a contagious fever. ஒட்டுக்குஞ்சு, s. A small young one of birds, சிறுகுஞ்சு. 2. [prov.] A small white louse, பேன்குஞ்சு. ஒட்டுக்குடி, s. A family or person, lodging or dwelling in another's house, garden, &c. ஒட்டுக்கும், adv. Wholly, entirely, முழுதும். ஒட்டுக்கேட்க, inf. [prop. ஒற்றுக் கேட்க.] To over-hear by listening in a hiding place, &c. ஒட்டுக்கொடுக்க, s. inf. To allow access, to be accessible. 2. To comply with, to yield, grant one's request, இடங் கொடுக்க. ஒட்டுடந்தை--ஒட்டுப்பற்று--ஒட் டுரிமை, s. A slight participation in an act, ஒட்டுடன்பாடு. 2. Distant relationship--as regards title to inheritance, சொற்பசம்பந்தம். ஒட்டுப்பற்றில்லாமற்போயிற்று. All friendship has ceased between us. ஒட்டுப்பற்ற, inf. [used adverbially.] Totally extinct, quite out, utterly exhausted. ஒட்டுத்தையல், s. Botching, mending, patching. ஒட்டுநர்--ஒட்டினர், s. Relations, friends, those connected with one, adherents, சினேகர். (p.) ஒட்டுநிற்க, inf. To lurk, wait in secret in order to over-hear. ஒட்டுப்புல், s. A kind of grass, ஓர்புல், Panicum verticillatum, L. ஒட்டுப்போட, inf. To stick on-as a piece, to insert by sticking, வட்டம் போ. 2. To lie in wait, சமயம்பார்க்க. ஒட்டுமயிர், s. Short hair in the margin, not gathered into the tie, குறுகி யமயிர். 2. Hair stuck together, or pasted--as by dancers, ஒட்டப்படுமயிர். ஒட்டுவிசேஷம், s. An ingrafted, patched up story, கட்டுக்கதை. 2. A story learned by stealth, ஒளித்துக்கேட்கும்வார்த்தை. ஒட்டுவிட, inf. To become loose, to separate as boards, &c., glued together, பொருத்தநீங்க. ஒட்டுவித்தை, s. The art of sticking persons together to the ground or otherwise by magical drugs, incantations, &c., ஓர்வித்தை. ஒட்டுவேலை, s. Joining, veneering, sticking on, patching, இணைக்கும்வேலை. 2. otukku (p. 82) s. Shelter, screen, defence, refuge, covering. மறைவு. 2. A retreat, recess, place of refuge or shelter, a secluded or retired place, a hiding place, மறைவிடம். உம்முடைய ஒதுக்கிலே வந்தேன். I am come under your protection, I take refuge with you. ஒதுக்கிடம், s. A retreat, a shelter, a place of retirement, &c., புகலிடம். ஒதுக்குக்கடல், s. A harbor, கு டாக்கடல். ஒதுக்குக்குடில், s. Hut or hovel used as a dwelling. ஒதுக்குப்படல், s. A shed to screen cattle from the wind. ஒதுக்குப்பாடு, s. [prov.] Land enclosed by trees which, not being open to the wind, is liable to have the crops on it scorched and destroyed by the sun. See பாடு. ஒதுக்குப்புறம், s. [also impr. ஒதுப் புறம்.] The side of a building, hedge, tree, &c., as affording shelter from wind or rain. ஒதுக்குப்பொதுக்குப்பண்ண, inf. [prov.] To embezzle. 2. To conceal property by omitting to insert it in the inventory of a person sued for debt. ஒதுக்குவயல், s. A sequestered place in a paddy field behind the lodging hut for penning cattle, &c. நிலொதுக்கு, s. A shady place to resort to. 4)
