aṭṭam (p. 9) --அஷ்டம், s. Eight, எட்டு. (p.) Wils. p. 92. ASHTAN. அட்டகணம்--அஷ்டகணம், s. [in poetry.] The eight kinds of feet with which the invocation of a poem may begin; four indicative of good, and four of evil. See கணம். அஷ்டகம், s. The eight super-human powers, எண்வ கைச்சித்தி. See சித்தி. அஷ்டசுபம்--அஷ்டமங்கலம், s. The eight auspicious objects, to meet which is thought a favorable omen. See மங்கலம். அஷ்டதந்திரவாதம், s. One of the eighty disorders from flatulency, combining eight bad symptoms. அஷ்டதனம், s. The eight special advantages; viz. 1. ரூபம், beauty. 2. சம்பத்து, acquisitions. 3. வித்தை, skill. 4. விவேகம், wit, ingenuity. 5. குணம், good disposition. 6. தனம், gold. 7. நல் லகுலம், good caste. 8. வயது, age. அஷ்டதானபரீட்சை, s. The eight symptoms of disease. See பரீட்சை. அஷ்டதிக்கயம், s. The eight elephants of the cardinal points, எட்டுத்திசை யானை. See திக்கயம். அஷ்டதிக்குப்பாலகர், s. The regents of the eight cardinal points, எண் டிசைப்பாலகர். See திக்குப்பாலகர். அஷ்டநாகம்--அஷ்டமாநாகம், s. The eight serpents, எண்வகைநாகம். See நாகம். அஷ்டபந்தனம், s. One of the eight forms of puja. 2. Binding the cardinal points by incantations, &c. See திக்குக்கட்டு. அஷ்டபந்தனஞ்சாத்த, inf. To put a mixture of wax, resin, vermilion, frankincense, butter, &c., in the niche around a stone idol. அஷ்டபோகம், s. The eight species of enjoyment. See போகம். அஷ்டப்பிரமாணம், s. The eight laws of evidence. See பிரமாணம். அஷ்டமணம், s. The eight kinds of marriage. See மணம். அஷ்டமச்சனி--அஷ்டமத்துச்சனி, s. Saturn situated in the eighth sign from that of one's birth, when his influence is deemed the most malignant, எட்டாமிடத்துச்சனி. அஷ்டமாந்தம், s. The eight kinds of disease in children. See மாந்தம். அஷ்டமி, s. The eighth day of the moon, either waxing or waning, எட் டாந்திதி. 2. The eighth of any series or number, எட்டாவது. அஷ்டமூர்த்தம், s. The eight forms assumed by Siva, spiritual and natural, regarded as his bodies. அஷ்டமூர்த்தி, s. Siva, சிவன். See the preceding. அஷ்டமூலம், s. The eight medicinal roots. A medicine composed of eight metals: 1. பொன், gold. 2. வெள்ளி, silver. 3. செம்பு, copper. 4. இரும்பு, iron. 5. வெண்கலம், white copper. 6. தரா, brass. 7. வங்கம், lead. 8. துத்தநாகம், zinc, with different salts and vegetable juices; the whole prepared by fire and reduced to powder to be used in various diseases. அஷ்டவசுக்கள், s. The eight வ சுக்கள், a class of தேவர் or gods. See வசுக்கள். அஷ்டவணிககுணம், s. The eight qualities of a good tradesman. See வ ணிககுணம். அஷ்டவருக்கம், s. iṭai (p. 45) s. Middle, midst, centre, நடு. 2. The middle of a body, the waist, மருங்குல். 3. As இடைச்சொல்--a particle. 4. Interval of time, &c., நடுநேரம். 5. (p.) Place, room, space, position, situation, இடம். 6. A form of the seventh or locative case, ஏழனுருபு. 7. The side of a thing, place, quarter, region, பக்கம். 8. An elephant, யானை. 9. Interim, opportunity, con venient season, season, சமயம். 1. The full moon, பௌரணை. 11. A measure of length, breadth, thickness, &c., நீட்டலளவையிலொ ன்று. 12. One of the three நாடி, or passages for the breath--that through the left nostril, the lunar nerve or vessel, திரிநாடி யிலொன்று. 13. One of the (நாடி) nerves or arteries, தசநாடியிலொன்று. (See நாடி.) 14. (misused for எடை) Weight, gravity நிறை. (See சுழிமுனை, and பிங்கலை.) நல்லாரிடைப்புக்கு. Associating with the good. இடைகலை, s. The breath of the left nostril--as சந்திரகலை. See பிங்கலை. இடைக்கட்டு, s. A girdle, sash. 2. The allowance made for the weight of a vessel before weighing any thing in it. இடைக்காடன், s. A Rishi or சித்தன்--one of the eighteen. இடைக்கிடை. Here and there, interspersed, நடுநடுவே. 2. Of like weight, even weight, equilibrium, நிறைக்குநிறை இடைக்குலநாதன், s. Vishnu as brought up by shepherds. இடைக்குறை, s. [in grammar.] A word shortened in the middle, syncope, elision; as ஓதி for ஓந்தி, camelion. (See விகாரம்.) 2. An island, blank space in a river, &c., ஆற்றிடைக்குறை. இடைக்கொள்ளை, s. Pillaging, plunder, free booty, plundering without regard to either party, நடுக்கொள்ளை. 2. (in Agastiar.) The ravages of an epidemic discase, கொள்ளைநோயான்வருமழிவு. இடைசுருங்குபறை, s. A small drum tapering in the middle, உடுக்கை. இடைசூரி, s. [prov.] Gold or silverbeads interspersed here and there between sacred or other beads, உருத்திராக்க முதலியவற்றிற்கிடையிற்கோத்திடுவது. இடைச்சனி--இடையெழுஞ்சனி, s. The eleventh lunar asterism, in which Saturn is considered very malignant. See கடையெழுஞ்சனி and முதலெழுஞ் சனி. இடைச்சன், s. The second child, இரண்டாம்பேறு. (c.) இடைச்சாதி, s. The second or middle tribe of வைசியர்--the third caste. இடைச்சேரி, s. A shepherd's village. இடைத்தட்டு, s. Getting profit indirectly by interposing between parties, &c. or by purchasing goods of one and selling them again from a distance. இடைநடு, s. The middle emphatically (a pleonasm in rhetoric.) இடைநரை, s. Hair or beard growing grey here and there. இடைநிலை, s. In verbs generally, the characteristics of tense, வினையிடைநிலை. 2. A neutral state, neutral or middle state, stagnation in business transactions, இருபுறத்திலுஞ்சாராமனிற்கை. 3. In some compound nouns, one of the component parts, பெயரிடைநிலை. இடைநிலைத்தீபகம், s. One of the beauties of poetry, விளக்கணிமூன்றிலொன்று. See தீபகம். இடைநிலைமயக்கு, s. [in orthography.] The proper combination of letters in the middle of a word, மொழியி லிரண்டெழுத்து மயங்கிநிற்கை--if the same consonant be repeated in the middle of a word, it is called, உடனிலைமெய்மயக்கு; if otherwise, it is called, வேற்றுநிலைமெய்ம யக்கு. இடைநீரினிற்க, inf. [prov.] To swim with the body erect and the water only up to the waist. இடைப்பட, inf. To interpose, happen in the interim, come in, between, among, &c., to happen, இடையிலுண்டாக. இடைப்படுதானம், s. Giving of a secondary order, bestowing through pity on the poor, the blind, மத்திமதானம். இடைப்பழம், s. Ripe fruits interspersed among the unripe. இடைப்பழம்பழுத்தல், v. noun. Ripening as fruits here and there. இடைப்பிறவரல், v. noun. Words intervening between any one word and another with which it makes sense--as between the noun and its attribute, &c., எழுவாய்முதலிய தொடரினுள் இடையிலேற்ற பிற சொல்வரல். இடைப்புழுதி, s. Land in a state for sowing, neither very moist nor very dry, காய்ந்துங்காயாதிருக்கிறபுழுதி. இடைப்புள்ளி, s. Marks scattered here and there--as in tobacco leaves, &c., fruits, &c. இடைப்பூட்டு, s. A truss, girdle, அரைப்பூட்டு. இடைப்போகம், s. An interior crop, out of season, இடையிற்புன்பயிர்விளைவு. இடைமடக்கு, s. Silencing one by vociferation, இடையிற்றடுக்கை. 2. Haughty speaking, இடக்குமடக்கானபேச்சு. 3. [in prosody.] The repetition of a word in the middle of a line with a varied meaning. See மடக்கு. இடைமுள், s. Small, new eruptions about a healing ulcer or bile, மறு முள்பாய்கை. 2. A disease, a kind of eruption, ஓர்கரப்பன். இடைமேடு, s. Rice-land of moderate height, நடுத்தரமானமேடு. இடையற, inf. To cease or terminate suddenly. இடையறாவன்பு, s. Never-ceasing love. இடையன், s. (fem. இடைச்சி.) A shepherd--as occupying a middle position. இடைப்புத்திபிடரியிலே. The shepherds have their wit in their nape; i. e. they have none. இடையன்கால்வெள்ளி, s. [prov.] The star Aldabaran in the constellation Aries, ஓர்விண்மீன். இடையாந்தரம், s. An intermediate space or time. அந்தவேலை யிடையாந்தரத்திலே கெட்டுப்போ யிற்று. The business was interrupted, spoiled in the interim. இடையாயர், s. Persons of a middling class in piety, excellence, &c. See தலை and கடை. இடையிட, inf. To intervene, be interspersed, to have intermediate spaces either of time or place, to intermit, happen intermediately, நடுவிற்றோன்ற. இடையிட்டுவந்தசெல்வம், s. Acquired wealth and prosperity, obtained during life, not derived from ancestors. இடையிட்டெதுகை, s. The எது கை or rhyming of the third letter in every other line. இடையிடை. From time to time, at intervals, intervening space. இடையிலேகொண்டுபோக, inf. To take by theft or force, to plunder fruits, furniture, &c. 2. To take off property at one's death--as persons who are not heirs. 3. To seize and carry off property from one who has stolen it--as a constable from a thief. (c.) இடையிலேவயிறுவளர்க்க, inf. To get a living at the expense of others, not reducing one's own stock. (c.) இடையினவெதுகை, s. One of the இனவெதுகை--that in which the second letter of each line is any of the medial letters. இடையீடு, s. Obstacle, impediment, frustration, விக்கினம். 2. Equivalent, equilibrium, ஈடு. இடையூறு, s. Frustration, interruption, disappointment, obstruction, hinderance, mishap, casualty, contingence, misfortune, disaster, இடர். (c.) இடையெண், s. A poem increasing and decreasing like the waves of the sea, அம்போதரங்கத்தொன்று. இடையொடுகடைமடக்கு, s. A figure in Rhetoric, repetition of a word or phrase in the middle and end of a line with different meanings, மடக்கணியி லொன்று. இடைவழக்கு, s. [prov.] A suit at law instituted by a new claimant while the previous one is going forward, கிளை வழக்கு. இடைவழக்காளி, s. An intervening party in a law-suit. இடைவழி, s. Midway. இடைவள்ளல், s. A term common to the second of the three classes of kings famed for liberality. (p.) இடைவாய், s. The degrees marked upon a steel-yard. இடைவிட, inf. To intermit, suspend, interrupt, leave intermissions, interstices, &c. இடைவிட்டுவிட்டு. Every other one. இடைவிடாமழை, s. Incessant rain. இடைவிடாமல், neg. v. part. Incessantly, constantly, without intermission. இடைவெட்டுப்பணம், s. A clipped or imperfectly stamped coin, மாறுமத் திரைவிழுந்தபணம். 2. [prov.] Profit made indirectly, பொறுக்கியெடுத்தபணம். இடைவெட்டுப்பேச்சு, s. Derision, ridicule. இடைவெளி, s. An intervening space, நடுவெளி. எட்கிடை--எள்ளிடை, s. The thickness of a rape-seed. irutu (p. 50) s. A season of two months. (See பருவம்.) 2. The monthly flowings of females, catamenia, மகளிர்சூதகம். Wils. p. 168. RUTU. 3. The first menstrual discharge, மகளிர்முதற்பூப்பு. 4. (தத்துவ-24.) Office, function, operation--as the evolving, carrying forward and reduction of nature by the deity, கடவுளின்முத்தொழில். இருதுசாந்தி--இருதுசாந்திக்கலியா ணம், s. The ceremony incident to a girl's arriving at puberty, when offerings are made to the moon to appease that malignant deity, that he may not injure her or attempt her chastity, சோபனகலியா ணம். இருதுவாக, inf. ūẕi (p. 71) s. The periodical termination of a great age, or the time of the universal deluge and destruction of all things, the end of the world, உகமுடிவு. 2. A very long time, நெடுங்காலம். 3. (p.) Lifetime, உறைகாலம். 4. The earth, பூமி. ஊழிபெயரினுங்கலங்காருரவோர். Though the world should come to an end, the sages will not deviate from their purposes. ஊழியுள்ளளவும். Through all eternity, lit. to the end of an age. உனக்கூழிவர. may you die--an imprecation. நீடுழிவாழ்க. May you live long. ஊழிகாலம், s. A very long time, ages without number, நெடுங்காலம். (சத. 2.) ஊழிக்காய்ச்சல், s. An epidemic fever, or pestilence supposed to be produced by a malignant demon, தொத்து சுரம். ஊழிக்காற்று, s. A destructive wind that prevails at the end of the world, யுகமுடிவிலுண்டாகுங்காற்று. 2. A demon, or bad vapor that causes epidemic diseases, pestilence, &c., விஷக்காற்று. ஊழித்தீ, s. The deluge, or submarine fire, usually described as a mare dwelling in the sea and breathing fire, by which, at the end of every quadruple age, the fire is consumed, வட வைத்தீ. ஊழிநீர், s. The water which prevails at the last deluge, described as rain poured down from the seven species of clouds united, also as the water of the circumfluent sea, உலகமுடிவிலுண்டாகுஞ்ச லப்பிரளயம். ஊழிநோய், s. A pestilence induced by a malignant demon, தொத்து வியாதி. ஊழியூழிகாலம், s. From age to age, eternity. 2)

Inferiority, baseness, meanness, lowness, the least, lowest, or worst kind, &c., கீழ்மை. 4. Way, வழி. 5. Termination of a particle, வினையெச்சவி குதி. 6. Place, room, இடம். 7. [vul.] An abandoned person, a wretch, முழுதுங்கெட் டவன். கடைக்கண், s. The outside corner of the eye, கட்கடை. 2. A benign look, கடாட்சம். கடைக்கண்கிடைக்கவேண்டும். I am anxious to get a propitious look, glance of your eye. கடைக்கண்ணாற்பார்க்க, inf. To glance, look sidewise. 2. To cast a propitious or benignant look. கடைக்கண்பார்வை, v. noun. A side look, a glance. 2. A propitious or benignant look, approbation, a token of favor. கடைக்கனல்--கடையனல், s. The final deluge-fire, ஊழித்தீ. கடைக்காப்பு, s. The last verse in the poem called பதிகம்--as an invocation, &c. கடைக்காரன், s. A shop-keeper. கடைக்குடல், s. The lower part of the bowels, கீழ்க்குடர். கடைக்குட்டி, s. The youngest child, a term of fondness, கடைப்பிள்ளை. கடைக்குறை, s. Elision in the termination of a word--as கோல், for கோ லம். கடைக்கூட்ட, inf. To effect, to produce a result--as the actions of a former birth are supposed to do, வினைப் பயனுறுவிக்க. 2. To unite man and wife, or a male and female of the brute creation, as former deeds are imagined to do. கடைக்கூழை, s. A species of rhyme, ஓர்தொடை. 2. The rear division of an army, படைப்பின்னணி. See கூழை. கடைக்கொள்ளி, s. A fire-brand burnt to the end, குறைக்கொள்ளி. கடைக்கோடி, s. [vul.] The very extremity, the utmost limit, ஈறு. கடைசால், s. [prov.] The finishing of a business, முடிவு. 2. Stern of a vessel--also written கடையால். கடைசாலொதுக்க, inf. To finish a business in hand. கடைச்சங்கம், s. The third and last of the ancient Madura colleges consisting of forty-nine literati, இறுதிச்சங் கம். கடைச்சரக்கு, s. Curry stuff, spices, &c., drugs, medicines, &c., sold in the bazaar, கடையில்விற்கப்படுஞ்சரக்கு. கடைச்சன், s. The youngest son, கடைப்பிள்ளை. கடைஞர், s. The laboring caste in agricultural districts, மருதநிலமாக்கள். கடைதலைப்பூட்டு, s. An inverted construction in poetry, by which the last word in a verse is connected with the first, விற்பூட்டுப்பொருள்கோள். கடைதிறப்பு, v. noun. Opening a door. In erotics, the section which relates to an application made for the opening of a door to a coming or expected lover; or in war poems, to a warrior returning in triumph after a victory, கதவுதிறக்கை. The outer gate, the outer court or yard, தலைவாயில். கடைத்தெரு, s. A market-street, a bazaar, கடைவீதி. கடைத்தேற, inf. [prop. கடத்தேற.] To be saved, to escape all afflictions. கடைத்தேற்றம், s. [prop. கடத்தேற் றம்.] Salvation. கடைநாள்--கடைமீன், s. The twenty-seventh lunar asterism, இரேவதி. (p.) கடைநிலை, s. A poem uttered by holy persons coming from a distance to the hero of the poem at the door of whose residence they stand and desire the door-keeper to inform his master of their arrival, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். A word at the end of a sentence understood in other parts--one of the தீவகம். கடைநிலையளபெடை, s. The rhyme in which the last letter of each verse is lengthened. கடைநிலையெழுத்து, s. [in grammar.] Letters proper to end a word, இறுதிநிலை. கடைபோக, inf. To end, terminate, conclude, முடிய. 2. To be fulfilled, நிறைவேற. கடைபோட--கடைவைக்க, inf. To set up a shop, open a shop. கடைப்பட, inf. To be inferior, below mediocrity, to be last in quality or estimation, degree or order, இழிவாக. 2. To be practicable, capable of completion, நிறைவேற. என்னாலிதுகடைப்படாது. This will not be completed by me. கடைப்பாடு, s. Determination, தீர் மானிப்பு. 2. Inferiority, baseness, இழிவு. கடைப்பந்தி, s. The lower end of a dining table or of a row of guests, கடைசிப்பந்தி. கடைப்பிடி, s. Bearing in mind, remembering, ஞாபகம். 2. Indelible impressions of gratitude for benefits received, of duties to be performed, of the importance of virtue and religion, மறவா மை. 3. Certainty, ascertainment, established truth, தேற்றம். 4. Firm belief in the essentials of religion serving as the hope and support of the mind in reference to a future state, the last grasp of the soul, உறுதி. 5. Firm determination, firm resolve, either for good or evil, கரும முடிக்குந்துணிவு. 6. Doctrines, truth firmly believed as necessary to salvation, உறுதி யானகொள்கை. கடைப்பிடிக்க, inf. To ascertain clearly, to know certainly, தெளிய. 2. To determine, resolve firmly, be decided in purpose either in a good or evil course, துணிய. 3. To remember, to bear in mind benefits, to be grateful, &c., to be deeply sensible of one's obligations for favor received, மறவாமலிருக்க. 4. To have an abiding sense of the importance of virtue and religion, சன்மார்க்கத்திலுறுதியாயி ருக்க. 5. To have an unwavering faith in the essentials of religion, to embrace or take firm hold of religious instructions, &c., தேவபத்தியிலுறுதியாயிருக்க. 6. To grasp, resort to--as the soul for its last refuge, பற்ற. 7. To provide, be provident, be economical, வீண்செலவுசெய்யாது வைக்க. (p.) கதவிலரேதற்சார்ந்தார்வண்ணங்கடைப்பிடியாதார். Unkind are they who are forgetful of the situation of their friends. (காரிகையுரை.) மற்றதன்கள்ளங்கடைப்பிடித்தனன்று. It is important to have an abiding sense of the wiles of Yama. வாழ்க்கைக்குவேண்டும்பொருளறிந்துகடைப்பிடி த்தலும். Knowing and duly providing all things necessary for her household-(குறளுரை.) நன்மைகடைப்பிடி. Persevere in good works. (ஔவை). கடைப்பிறப்பு, s. The meanest species of birth in any class of beings, இழிந்தபிறப்பு. கடைப்புணர்முரண்--கடைமுரண், s. A species of rhyme when the last foot of every line is of opposite meaning, ஓர்தொடை. கடைப்புணர்வு--கடைப்பூட்டு, s. [in jewelry.] Clasp, hasp, அணியின்கடைப் புணர்வு. கடைப்புத்தி, s. [prov.] Stupidity, இழிந்தபுத்தி. 2. A piece of folly, பின்புத்தி. கடைப்போக்கு, s. The flood-gate of tank. கடைமடக்கு, s. [in rhetoric.] Continued recurrence of the same words at the end of each line through a stanza, but with different meanings, சொல்லணி யிலொன்று. See மடக்கு. கடைமுறை, s. The last time, eventually, கடைசிமுறை. (நீதிநெறி. 48.) கடைமோனை--கடையாகுமோனை, s. (See மோனை.) A rhyme when the first letter of the last foot of every line is the same, ஓர்தொடை. (p.) கடையயல், s. [in grammar.] The penultimate, ஈற்றயல். (p.) கடையர், s. (fem. கடைசியர்--க டைச்சியர்.) Laboring classes in agricultural districts, மருதநிலமாக்கள். (p.) கடையழிய, inf. To be afflicted with a painful and lingering disease, to suffer extremely, வருந்த. 2. To be distressed with poverty, வறுமையுற. 3. To degenerate, கேடுற. கடையனல், s. The fire by which the world will finally be consumed. கடையன், s. A man of the lowest rank, இழிந்தோன். கடையாகெதுகை, s. A rhyme, ஓர்தொடை. (p.) கடையாட்டம், s. [prov.] Lingering in disease, excessive suffering from disease, வருத்தம். 2. Vexation, teasing, imminence, trouble, annoyance, உலைவு, lit. mean work. கடையாட்டப்பட, inf. To drudge, to be employed in mean work. 2. To linger in disease, suffer exceedingly, வ ருந்த. 3. To be vexed. harassed. &c.-as a nurse by troublesome children, உ லைய. கடையாணி, s. A linch-pin, அச் சாணி. 2. A peg or pin used to keep a tenon in a mortise, or for any similar purpose, பூட்டாணி. கடையாந்தரம்--கடையீறு, s. [vul.] The very last, the extremity, &c.--as கடைசி. கடையாயார், s. Persons of the lowest rank, இழிந்தோர். கடையால், s. Stern of a vessel, தோணியின்பிற்புறம். See கடைசால், usage. கடையிணைமுரண், s. A rhyme when the last two feet of a line are of opposite meanings, ஓர்தொடை. (p.) கடையிணைமோனை, s. A consonance of the first letters in the last two feet of each line in a verse. (p.) கடையீடு, s. Land of the poorest quality, கடைத்தரமானநிலம். கடையுணி, s. [prov.] A mean fellow who eats what he can beg or pick up-- a worthless being, இழிந்தோன். கடையுண்ண, inf. [prov.] To linger in disease, வருத்தப்பட. 2. To be stinted or weak in growth--as a child, நசுங்க. 3. To be neglected, abused, &c.-- as a book, a utensil, &c.; in this meaning it is a term of displeasure, இகழப்பட. கடையுவா, s. The full moon, பௌரணை. (p.) கடையெழுஞ்சனி, s. The twelfth asterism in which Saturn is considered malignant in his influence, உத்திரம். See சனி. கடைவழி, s. Final salvation, the last path. கடைவழிக்குதவும். It will avail for the salvation of the soul. காதற்றஊசியும்வாராதுகாணுங்கடைவழிக்கே. Be assured that even an eyeless needle will not accompany you in that sad hour. கடைவளர, inf. To be enlarged-said of the genitals of a cow, &c., before yeaning, ஈனுங்காலத்திற்குறிவிரிய. கடைவள்ளல், s. The last of the third class of liberal men--he who bestows charity from motives of ostentation, கேட்டபின்கொடுப்போன். கடைவாய், s. The corner or extremities of the mouth, வாயின்கடை. கடைவாய்நக்கி, s. A great miser, உலுத்தன், lit. he who licks the corners of his mouth. கடைவாய்ப்பல், s. The double teeth, the grinders, the back teeth. கடைவாய்வழிய, inf. To drivel at the corners of the mouth--as old people or persons asleep, வாய்நீரொழுக. கடைவிரிக்க, inf. To spread out goods for sale in a shop or market, கடைதிறக்க. கடைவீதி, s. A market-street. கடைவைக்க, inf. To place goods for sale in a shop or bazaar. 2. To open a shop on an auspicious day after the new-year, கடைதிறக்க. பலசரக்குக்கடை, s. A shop where commodities of various kinds are sold. மளிகைக்கடை, s. A wholesale ware-house. காசுக்கடை, s. An exchange. அடிக்கடை, s. The first shop in a market-street. மருந்துக்கடை, s. An apothecary's shop. கசாய்க்கடை, s. (Tel.) A butcher's shop. சாராயக்கடை, s. An arrack shop. கீரைக்கடை, s. A green-grocer's shop. சவுளிக்கடை, s. A cloth-merchant's shop. விரற்கடை, s. The breadth of a finger. மீன்கடை, s. Fish-market. 10)

kirakam (p. 109) s. A house, a mansion, or palace, வீடு, Wils. p. 295. GRUHA. 2. A planet, கோள். Wils. p. 34. GRAHA. The planets in the Hindu system are nine, called நவக் கிரகம், viz.: 1. ஆதித்தன் or ஞாயிறு, the sun. 2. சோமன் or திங்கள், the Moon. 3. அங்காரகன் or செவ்வாய், Mars. 4. புதன், Mercury. 5. பிரகற்பதி--பிரகஸ்பதி or வியாழன், Jupiter. 6. சுக்கிரன் or வெள்ளி, Venus. 7. சனி, Saturn. 8. இராகு, Caput draconis. 9. கேது, Cauda draconis. I am lost, ruined; I an undone. கெட்டுப்போனபார்ப்பானுக்குச் செத்துப்போனப சுவைத்தானங்கொடுத்தாற்போல. As if a dead cow be presented to a ruined brahman; said of an unprofitable pursuit by an incompetent person. கெட்டும்பட்டணஞ்சேர். Though to be ruined, go to the town. தரித்திரங்கெடும்படி. That the misery of poverty may cease. ஈற்றுயிர்மெய்கெடும். The final compound letter is dropped. கெடுகுடிசொற்கேளாது. A family given up to ruin will never listen to advice. கெட்டகுடியேகெடும். A ruined family will sink more and more. கெடுகாலம், s. A time of ruin, evil, drought, &c.; also used reference to retribution of evil deeds which is to come immediately. கெடுமதி, s. An offensive smell. கெட்டரூபம், s. A deformed, monstrous or horrid shape. கெட்டவியாதி, s. A bad, malignant, dangerous disease. 2. The venereal or other filthy disease. கெட்டகேடு, s. Utter ruin, uselessness, unworthiness, &c.--usually as an exclamation கெட்டுப்போனவள், s. A seduced woman, a bad woman. கெடுதலை, v. noun. Ruin, அழிவு. 2. Damage, loss, detriment, injury, நஷ்டம். 3. (See இலக்கி னம்.) 2. Good or evil from the influence of the planets, கிரகங்களின்கோளாறு. கோட்சொல்ல, inf. To calumniate, inform against. 2. To act the part of a tale-bearer, to slander, to divulge secrets injuriously. கோளன், s. A tale-bearer, கோளுரைப் போன். கோள்குண்டணி, s. Tale-bearing and calumny. (c.) கோள்முடிய, inf. [prov.] To fabricate or tell tales; to enrage another's mind by slanderous reports. காணுங்கோள், s. The visible planets. See கிரகம். கரந்துறைகோள், s. Phenomena of the heavens, sometimes invisible and fanciful, but most of them regarded as ominous-as இராகு, Caput draconis, or the ascending node; கேது, Cauda draconis or the descending node; சூரியப்பிரதிவிம்பம், a sundog or false appearance of a second sun; பரிவேடம், halo round the sun or moon; வால்வெள்ளி, comets; வானவில், rainbow; தூமம், meteor, indistinct smoky phenomena. Four other invisible கோள், (காணா க்கோள்.) are spoken of as being of special importance in casting nativities and in other astrological calculations; viz: 1. குளிகன். 2. யமகண்டன். 3. அத்தப் பிரகரன். 4. காலன். 5. அருக்கன். கோளினால்வருந்தீங்கு. canti (p. 159) s. A joining, junction, meeting, union, combination, இசைப்பு. 2. The meeting or junction of two or more roads, rivers, &c., or the place of such meeting, சந்திக்குமிடம். 3. The joining of words, and the changes of letters by elision, reduplication, and substitution in the coalescence of words with each other, or in the addition to a word of particles expressing case, or in the formation of derivatives from a primitive, விகுதிமுதலிய வற்றின்புணர்ச்சி. 4. The intervals of morning and evening twilight, especially the latter, regarded as the union of the day and night, மாலைநேரம்; thus அந்திசந்தி, morning and evening. (c.) 5. A period at the expiration of each yuga, connecting it with the following, and occupying 1/12 of each, during which a gradual change takes place in the world, introductory to the peculiarities of the succeeding yuga; also a period of the same length, as the Satya yuga at the end of each Manvantara and of each Kalpa, யுகசந்தி. W. p. 889. SANDHI. 6. Reconciliation, pacification, forming friendship, நட்பாதல். 7. The bamboo, so called from its knots, மூங்கில். 8. The stated worship for each individual, morning and evening, and with some in mid-day, சந்தியாவந்தனம். (p.) 9. Division of time in a day, especially meal time--as ஒருசந்தி, one meal, it being fast-day. (c.) 1. [loc.] Juncture, crisis, a critical point of time, தறுவாய். சந்திகாவலன், s. [prov.] As அந்திகாவ லன், which see. சந்திக்கரை, s. The place where several roads or rivers meet. (c.) சந்திபண்ண--சந்திமுடிக்க, inf. To perform he daily private worship, morning, noon and evening. (p.) சந்திப்பாடு, v. noun. A mishap supposed to be caused by a malignant spirit in a cross way, or other haunted place. சந்திமறிக்க, inf. [loc.] to avert the displeasure of malignant divinities, in time of epidemics, by presenting them cooling offerings at cross roads, and thus to stop their progress into the country. சந்திமிதிக்க, inf. [prov.] To pass across way at an auspicious time, as after recovering from sickness, especially from the small pox, on first going out. சந்திமிதிப்பிக்க, inf. To cause a child to walk the first time on the 6th month in places where two or more ways meet. சந்தியாகாலம், s. The period of evening twilight, மாலைநேரம். 2. The three seasons of stated worship. (See சந்தி.) 3. The interval between one yuga and another, யுகசந்தி; [ex Sa. Sandhya.] W. p. 89. சந்தியாகாலகருமம், s. Evening devotion. (R.) சந்தியாராகம், s. The redness of the sky at sun-set. (R.) சந்தியாவந்தனம்--சந்தியாவந்தனை, s. [prov. சந்திவந்தனை.] Worship at any of the three stated periods; [ex வந்தனை, worship.] சந்தியிலிருக்க, inf. [prov.] To be ruined, to be driven into the street. சந்தியில்வைக்க, inf. To ruin a person, (lit.) to drive him into the streets. சந்திவிக்கிரகம், s. Forming a friendship with enemies to compass their ruin; one of the modes recommended for dealing with enemies. (p.) சந்தியிற்கொண்டுவர, inf. [prov. fig.] To expose a person to ridicule and shame (lit.) to bring to the street. முச்சந்தி, s. The meeting of three roads. நாற்சந்தி, s. The meeting of four roads or streets. சொற்சந்தி, s. One word combining with another in sense. சந்திவழு, s. Impropriety in the use of grammatical sandhi. The three grammatical sandhis as applied to words of Sanscrit origin are, 1. தீர்க்கசந்தி. 2. குண சந்தி. 3. விருத்திசந்தி. To these a fourth, ஆ திவிருத்திசந்தி is added. (நன்.) சந்திகாரியம், s. caṉi (p. 173) s. The planet Saturn, the most, malignant, in astrological influence of all the planets, ஓர்கிரகம். 2. Saturday, சனிக்கி ழமை. W. p. 829. S'ANI. 3. (fig.) A person of ill omen whose company is dangerous, சனிபோன்றவன்.--Note. The different positions and influences of the planet are. (1.) அஷ்டமசனி. See under அஷ்டம். (2.) நாலாமிடத்துச்சனி, called also அர்த்தாஷ்டம சனி. Saturn in the fourth sign from that of one's birth, where his influence is less malignant. (3.) இரண்டாமிடத்துச்சனி, or பாதச் சனி. Saturn in the sign nest to that in the ascendant, where his influence is indicative of eloquence and oratory. (4.) ஏழ ரையாண்டுச்சனி. Saturn's 7?? years' evil influence called ஏழரை, and divided into three parts, மங்குசனி, பொங்குசனி, மரணச்சனி which see. As saturn is 2?? years in each sign of the zodiac, it occupies 7?? years for three signs, so that a man living ninety years would pass three times through all these periods. See ஏழரை. (5.) பன்னிரண்டாமிடத்துச் சனி. Saturn in the 12th sign from that in the ascendant. (6.) சன்மச்சனி. Saturn in the ascendant. (7.) மகத்துச்சனி. Saturn in the first lunar asterism of Leo called மகம், indicating great calamities. (8.) மீனச்சனி. Saturn in the Pices, considered unpropitious in its influence. இவனெனக்கு மகத்துச்சனிபோலிருக்கிறான். He is a great enemy to me. சனிகழிய--சனியன்றொலைய, inf. To expire or end as any period of saturn's malign influence on a person. 2. To terminate as a cause of calamity, evil, &c. சனிக்கிழமை--சனிவாரம், s. Saturday. சனிக்கிழமைவிரதம், s. [also சனிவிர தம்.] A fast on Saturdays, to avert the evil influences of Saturn, when, before eating, crows, emblems of Saturn, are fed. 2. A fast in honor of Vishnu. சனிபகவான்--சனீச்சுரன், s. The regent of Saturn. சனிபிடித்தல், v. noun. Being seized by Saturn, brought under his malignant influence. 2. (fig.) Being assailed by adverse circumstances, துன்புறுதல். சனிமுழுக்கு, v. noun. Bathing on Saturdays. சனிமூலை, s. The north east, (lit.) Saturn's quarter, வடகிழக்கு. சனியன், s. Saturn the planet. 2. An unlucky person, associating with whom may bring evil. 3. A troublesome person, animal, thing, circumstance, &c. இவன் எனக்குச் சனியனாய் வந்தான். He is a Saturn (an inauspicious person) to me. சனிவேதை, s. The influence of Saturn; pain, சனிதோஷம். (R.) சனிக்காசு, s. A small coin paid to the master, by the scholars, on Saturdays. சனிப்பாட்டு, s. [loc.] A song or poem sung by the boys of a school, near the end of a year, to obtain presents from their parents, and others, for the master. சனியெண்ணெய், s. The oil collected by scholars, from their parents, for their teacher, on Saturdays. 66) *
