uṇṭi (p. 59) s. Food, sustenance, eatables, உணவு. 2. Boiled rice, சோறு. 3. The food of carnivorous animals, இரை. (நிகண்டு and திவாகரம்.) 4. (பாரதிதீ.) The food of birds and beasts in general, பற வைவிலங்கிவற்றினுணவு. Four kinds of eating are enumerated, viz.: 1. உண்டல், eating without mastication--as boiled rice, &c. 2. தின்றல், masticating, chewing--as meat, curries, &c. 3. நக்கல், licking--as honey, molasses, lapping. 4. பருகல், drinking, sucking--as a child. Sometimes a fifth is added, viz.: மென்றல், chewing--as spices, pungents, leaves, &c. kept in the mouth. உண்டிசுருங்குதல்பெண்டிர்க்கழகு. It is becoming in a woman to eat little. பேருண்டி, s. A principal meal-as dinner, &c., போசனம். 2. Eating to excess, gluttony, gormandizing, பெருந் தீன். சிற்றுண்டி, s. A light meal--as luncheon, tiffin, பலகாரம். 2. Eating sparingly, சிறுதீன். 3. A kind of small cake, அப்பவருக்கத்தொன்று. 122)

url (p. 64) s. A mortar, large or small, நென்முதலியகுற்றுமுரல். 2. A mould for making pastry, இடியப்பவுரல். உரலாணி, s. A pestle, a ricepounder, உலக்கை. 2. [prov.] A piece of block inserted in a mortar, when the bottom is worn away, உரலடிக்கிடுமரவாணி. உரலிடித்தல், v. noun. Pounding in a mortar. அவலைநினைத்துரலையிடிக்கிறது. To beat the empty mortar, thinking of the flattened rice. [prov.] உரலுமுலக்கையும். The pestle and the mortar. 2. (fig.) The glottis and the uvula of the throat. உரற்கட்டை, s. A mortar formed of a block of wood--a term applied metaphorically to a stout short man. உரற்கட்டை--உரற்குற்றி, s. A wooden block for a mortar, உரற்கானமரத்து ண்டு. உரற்குழி, s. A hole in the floor in which a rice mortar is fixed. பாக்குரல், s. A small mortar made of wood, stone, or metal, in which betel and areca nut are bruised to facilitate mastication. 3)

kvṭṭu (p. 97) கிறேன், கவட்டினேன், வே ன், கவட்ட, v. a. To chew, masticate, மெல் ல. (கூர்ம.) (p.) கவட்டல், v. noun. The act of chewing, மெல்லல். 7)

cappu (p. 160) கிறேன், சப்பினேன், வேன், சப்ப, v. a. To chew, masticate, (commonly not rice) to champ, to chew--as betel or tobacco, மெல்ல. 2. To mumble in eating --as an old man; to suck, to smack, குதக்க. W. p. 32. CHARVA. (c.) சப்பித்தின்றுபோடுவான். He will eat me up. i. e. vent his rage on me. சப்பிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To chew food and give it to a child--as a mother. உதட்டைச்சப்ப, inf. To suck the lips. கையைச்சப்ப, inf. To suck the hand --as children after sucking the fruit. முலையைச்சப்ப, inf. To suck the breast. விரலைச்சப்ப, inf. To suck the fingers --as babes. வாயைச்சப்ப, inf. To smack the lips; to mutter or talk indistinctly. சப்பல், v. noun. [prov. substantively.] An old chew or cud, refuse of fruits, &c., cast from the mouth, சக்கை. 47)

cavaṭṭu (p. 171) கிறேன், சவட்டினேன், வேன், ச வட்ட, v. a. To destroy, subvert, அழிக்க. W. p. 833. S'ARVVA. (நிக.) 2. [a causative of சவள், v.] To bend, warp, make flexible; to distort, twist, sprain a limb, &c., வளைக்க. 3. W. p. 32. CHARVA. To chew, masticate, மெல்ல. 4. [in reproach.] To eat, munch, வாயைக்குதட்ட. 5. [prov.] To get the better of a thing, to swallow down, விழுங்க. 6. [loc.] To tread upon, மிதிக்க. (c.) அவன்காலைச்சவட்டிநடக்கிறான். He twists his leg in walking. சவட்டிப்பிடுங்கிப்போட்டார். [prov.] He has done cleverly. (Ironically.) 6)

tiṉ (p. 241) கிறேன், றேன் பேன், ன, v. a. To eat, to feed, to take a meal, உண்ண. 2. [in poetry.] To eat light food, pastries and relishes, &c., சிற்றுண்டிபுசிக்க. 3. To chew, to masticate, மெல்ல. 4. To devour--said of an animal, பட்சிக்க. 5. To eat away, consume, corrode--as white ants, ironmould, rust, &c., அரிக்க. (c.) தின்றதெல்லாஞ்சமித்துப்போயிற்று. What he has eaten is digested; i. e. he ahs forgotten the benefits I have done him. தின்றுகொழுத்துப்போனான். By eating (of my food) he is become fat and saucy. (In abuse.) செல்லுதின்றுவிடும். The white ants will eat away. தின்னாவீட்டில்தின்னி. One who eats with low families. [prov.] மண்தின்றுவிடும். The earth will corrode it. இந்தஎருதுஅந்தஎருதைத்தின்றுவிடும். This ox will surpass that. நேற்றுத்தின்றதீன்அல்லவோ. Is not the (work, &c.) for what ate yesterday; i. e. I want food to day. புல்லைத்தின்னும்மாடுஉதவுகிறதுபோலப்புலியைத்தின் னுஞ்சென்னாய்உதவுமோ. Will a wild dog which kills the tiger be as useful as an ox that eats grass; i e. will any one who lives luxuriously labor like one who takes plain food? யானைத்தின்றவிளாங்களிபோலே. Like the woodapple which the elephant had eaten (swallowed); i. e. hollow, the substance being absorbed through the unbroken shell. தின்பண்டம், s. (com. தீன்பண்டம்.) Eatables, including pastry and fruits. தின்பண்டநல்கல், v. noun. One of the thirty-two acts of charity. See அறம். தின்றல்---தின்னல்--தின்னுதல், v. noun. A eating. தின்றி, s. Eatables, தீன். தின்றிப்போத்து, s. (Tel. திிபோது.) A glutton; (lit.) a well-fed bull. தின்றுகழிக்க, inf. To loathe food from satiety. தின்னாச்சாதி, s. Low castes, with whom it is disgraceful to eat. See சாதி. 69)

mel (p. 363) --மெல்லு, கிறேன், மென்றேன், மெல்லுவேன், மெல்ல, v. a. To chew softly, as rice, grapes, &c., to masticate, சவட்ட. 2. (fig.) To taunt, to reproach, துஷிக்க. (c.) மென்றுதுப்பு. Chew and spit (it). இரவும்பகலுமென்னைமென்றுகொண்டிருக்கிறான்...... He chides me night and day. பாக்குமென்றடக்குதல். Keeping a cud of betel-leaf, in one cheek. மெல்லிலை, s. Betel-leaf, வெற்றிலை. (p.) 13)
