Seven is regarded as the most lucky number, after which five and the other odd numbers have precedence. 8. Lowness in state or rank, inferiority, pitiableness, or despicableness, எளிமை. 9. Easiness of accomplishment, acquisition, access, &c.; what is not difficult, இலேசு. 1. A kind of rape, the plant or seed, எள்ளு. (p.) எண்ணுக்குள்ளடங்காதது. That which is innumerable. 2. That which is incomprehensible. எண்ணுமெழுத்துங்கண்ணெனத்தகும். Arithmetic and grammar may be regarded as eyes. எண்ணெழுத்திகழேல். Think not lightly of numbers and letters, do not neglect reading and cyphering. எண்பொருளவாகச்செலச்சொல்லி. Communicating your thoughts in language easy to be understood-எண்சாத்திரம், s. The science of numbers, arithmetic, mathematics, கணி தம். எண்கூட்டல், s. Addition. எண்சுவடி, s. The multiplication table either of whole numbers, or fractions, ஓர்சுவடி. 2. An account book, கணக்குப்புஸ்தகம். எண்செய்யுள், s. A poem celebrating the country, town, names, titles, &c. of a hero. It consists of any number of verses from ten to onethousand inclusive. and is named from the number of verses it contains, ஓர்பிர பந்தம். See பிரபந்தம். எண்ணர், s. Astronomers, கணிதர். ஏரணங்காணென்பரெண்ணர். Astronomers will call this a treatise of arithmetic. (கோவை.) எண்ணிட, inf. To count, reckon, calculate. எண்ணிடஇடமொன்றியின்றியெங்கணும்நிறைந்த தன்றே. cāttiram (p. 176) --சாஸ்திரம், s. Scripture, written works on science, philosophy, &c., கலைநூல். 2. Astrology, astronomy, சோதிடம். 3. Any of the mystical science for ascertaining and predicting future events, அதி நூல். 4. Divination, sooth-saying, prognostication by any of the mysterious arts, ஆரூடம். 5. Religious or other institutes as laid down in writings and considered, of divine origin or authority, including the Vedas, Agamas, Puranas, incantations, works on medicine, mathematics, law, mechanics, erotics, &c., வேதாகமமுதலி யன. 6. Any of the systems of philosophical theology--as the Sidhanta, the Vedanta, the Potanta, &c., வேதாங்கம். 7. Religious, ceremonial, or other rules, laws, precepts, &c., as laid down in the sacred writings, விதிப்பிரமாணம். W. p. 841. S'ASTRA.--Note. The three சாத்திரம் or systems of philosophical religion; are. 1. சாங்கியம், the Sankhya system, the founder of which was Kapila, maintaining that perfect bliss consists in the entire subjection of the three gunas, which proceeded from the threefold origin of the eternal, unoriginated Maya; 2. பாதஞ்சலியம், the Yoga philosophy, as taught by Pathanjali, distinguished from the ceremonial; 3. வே தாந்தம், the theological portion of the Vedas as contained in the Upanishads. The founder of this last school was Vyasa, and its most celebrated supporter was Sankaracharya. It makes the divine being the the soul of the Universe, and is a system of Pantheism. See வேதாந்தம். The six சாஸ்திரம் or philosophical systems are; 1. வேதாந்தம், theology, as the highest knowledge. (See above); 2. வைசே ஷிகம், the Vaiseshika doctrine, morality, or ethics, a branch of the Nyaya or logical school instituted by Kanada; 3. பாட் டம், the system of Bhatta'charya, in an epic poem containing narrations; 4. பிர பாகரம், ceremonial law; 5. பூருவமீமாஞ்சை, antiquity or works and actions of old times, elucidating the Karma-kanda of the Vedas, originating with the Muni Jaimini; 6. உத்தரமீமாஞ்சை, logic, the same as the Vedanta, founded on the Gnana-kanda, or theological portion of the Vedas, and treating of God as the soul of the Universe. It is ascribed to Vyasa. சாத்திரத்துக்குக் கொஞ்சங் கூட்டிக்கொள். Take a morsel for form's sake, (lit.) in order to conform to the shastra. சாத்திரக்காரன், s. An astrologer, a diviner, a soothsayer. 2. The author of a shastra, ஆக்கியோன். சாத்திரங்கேட்க, inf. To consult an astrologer or other diviner. சாஸ்திரக்கியன், s. A man of science, a learned man, a pundit, பண்டிதன். (R.) சாத்திரசாலை, s. A college. (R.) சாத்திரசித்தம், s. Sentiment, meaning, doctrine, &c., maintained in a shastra, நூலினாலுறுதிப்பட்டது. (p.) சாத்திரஞ்சொல்ல, inf. To foretell, prognosticate by astrology, augury, &c., to divine. 2. To assert authoritatively as the shastras, தீர்ப்பாயுரைக்க. சாத்திரதீட்சை--சாத்திரதீக்கை, s. Written instruction, the scriptures as one of the modes of enlightening the mind of a disciple. See தீட்சை. சாத்திரமுறை--சாத்திரவிதி, s. The precepts, injunctions, &c., of the shastras. சாத்திரம்பார்க்க, inf. To consult astrology, &c., at the birth of a child, for the site of a house, an undertaking, &c. சாத்திரம்பண்ண--சாத்திரஞ்செய்ய, inf. To make religious ceremonies prescribed in the shastras. சாத்திரி--சாத்திரவாதி, s. [com. சாஸ்திரி.] An astrologer, a soothsayer, a diviner, a prognosticator. 2. tīr (p. 243) கிறது, ந்தது, தீரும், தீர, v. n. To end, terminate, he consummated, completed, முடிய. 2. To cease as pain or disease; terminate as a curse or its effects, நீங்க. 3. To be determined, decided, settled, as a law-suit or quarrel; to be passed as a sentence, தீர்மானமாக. 4. To be performed or completed as a duty; to be perfected, finished, நிறைவேற. 5. To leave, quit, cease, pass way, ஓய. 6. To be long, remote, to extend, நீள. 7. To be exhausted, used up, consumed, அற. 8. To expire as the allotted punishment for past deeds by the suffering and enjoyment of the soul, to be expiated as sin; to end as transmigration by absorption in the deity, ஊழொழிய. 9. v. a. (கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், தீர.) To polish or grind gems, clean gems, சா ணைதீர. 1. To fire off a cannon or musket, வெடிதீர. 11. To dye, stain, tinge, imbue with color, சாயந்தீர. 12. To finish, as the interlude between the stanzas in singing, playing, dancing, beating time, &c., தாளந் தீர. 13. To levy duty, assess a tax, &c. சுங்கந்தீர. 14. I cannot come. அவர்கள் பலவந்தம்செய்ததனால் தீராதென்று கொடு டுக்கவேண்டியிருந்தது. By their pressing (he said) it will not cease; it is necessary to give--Note தீராது, in such cases has a peculiar meaning. தாளந்தீர்ந்தான். He finished a tune. அதற்குவர்ணந்தீர்ந்தான். He painted it. இவன்தீர்ந்தசாமி. He is a brave fellow; (lit.) a brave god. (In irony.) தீர்கடை, s. The last end of a thing, termination, conclusion, முடிவு. 2. Absoluteness, entireness, முழுமை. தீர்ந்தகணக்கு. A settled account. தீர்ந்தகள்ளன், s. A finished rogue, a thorough villain, desperate thief. தீர்ந்தசரக்கு, s. (neg. தீராதசரக்கு.) Goods on which duty is paid. 2. Goods bargained for. தீர்ந்தபட்சம், s. The final settlement of accounts, disputes, &c. தீர்ந்தவன், s. A skilful, experienced man; an adept. (Commonly in a bad sense.) தீர்ந்தவேலை, s. A finished work. பட்டைதீர, inf. To give sides to a gem, to a piece of timber, or to a stone, in cutting or polishing. சாயந்தீர்கிறவன், s. A dyer. நவைதீருமாகமம், s. The faultless Agamas. (p.) தீர, inf. [used adv.] Altogether, entirely, perfectly, absolutely, thoroughly, completely, முழுவதும். தீரப்படித்தவனொருவனுமில்லை. There is none perfect in his studies. தீரமறக்க, inf. To forget entirely, altogether. தீராமை, v. noun. (neg.) That which cannot be obviated. தீராநோய்--தீராவியாதி, s. An incurable disease. தீராப்பழி, s. An unpardonable injury. 2. Implacable enmity. தீராவழக்கு, s. A law-suit or dispute which cannot be settled easily. தீராவழக்குக்குத்தெய்வமேசாட்சி.
