ēṟu (p. 79) கிறேன், ஏறினேன், வேன், ஏற. v. n. [also used with the impers. terminations.] To rise, rise--as the heavenly bodies-as a kite, &c.; to emerge, இவர. 2. To get upon, mount, to ride a horse, a vehicle, வாகனமேற. 3. To enter, to penetrate--as a nail, a probe, a thorn; as thoughts or advice into the mind, &c., தைக்க. 4. To embark, to get into a boat or vessel, to be laden--as cargo, கப்பலேற. 5. To be elevated, high, beyond, &c.; to exceed mediocrity, to be excessive, redundant, superfluous, உயர. 6. To exceed in number, weight, measure, to rise in price, quality, &c., தொகைமுதலியவதிகரிக்க. 7. To pervade, to be diffused through the blood--as poison, நஞ்சேற. ஏறுகாலிறங்குகால்பார்க்க. This is worth more. விலையேறப்பெற்றது. That which is obtained at a high price. 2. That which is valuable, precious. ஏறக்கட்ட, inf. To build up, to edify, உயரக்கட்ட. 2. To refuse selling that the price may be increased, தானிய மேறக்கட்ட. 3. To be restrained, or to withhold as the clouds from raining, or a cow from giving milk, மழைமுதலியபெய் யாதிருக்க. 4. [local.] To collect scattered grain in a heap, இறைந்ததானியத்தைக்கூட்டிச் சேர்க்க. வானம்மழையேறக்கட்டிவிட்டது. The heaven has withheld the rain. ஏறக்கட்டித்தூக்க, inf. To hang up a thing. 2. Like removing the ladder a person has ascended. ஏறவிறங்கப்பார்க்க, inf. To stare at one, to gaze at one from head to foot, கேசாதிபாதமீறாகப்பார்க்க. நடந்தேற, inf. To be accomplished, to succeed. கரையேற, inf. To land, disembark. 2. To attain the shores of final salvation. ஏறாங்கடைசி, s. [prop. ஏறுகடை.] The very end, அறமுடிவு. ஏறாமேடு, s. A height which one cannot reach, or to which water cannot rise, உயர்ந்தமேடு. 2. An enterprise above one's power, செய்யக்கூடாதகாரியம். 3. An inconvenient engagement, unsuitable contract, &c.--as an unequal marriage, ஒவ்வாமை-- in use, ஏறாங்கடை ஏறிக்கொள்ள, inf. To establish one's self in a high office, &c., to arrive at a high state or sanctity, or to attain a higher degree in religion. See நிலை or பாதம். சாதியிலேயேறிக்கொண்டான். [prov.] He has risen in caste by marrying in a higher family (spoken sarcastically). ஏறிட, inf. To stick into, to cause to enter, to pierce, புகப்பண்ண. 2. To place, set up, fix, ஏற்ற. வில்லைவளைத்துநாணேறிட்டு. Bending the bow and fixing on the bowstring. பருவிற்சலாகையையேறிட்டான். He introduced the probe into the sore. ஏறிட்டுப்பார்க்க, inf. To look up. 2. To attend to one when speaking. 3. To look or stare at a person. என்னையேறிட்டுப்பார்க்கவில்லை. He did not even cast a look at me, he took no notice of me. Amongst the Hindus it is not deemed respectful to look at a superior in the face; even when addressing him or receiving his directions. ஏறுகடை, s. The very end, the extremity, முடிவானகடை. ஏறுகுதிரை, s. A riding horse. ஏறுக்குமாறு--ஏறுமாறு, s. Improper, unruly, or vicious behavior, தாறுமாறு. ஏறுசலாகை, s. [prov.] In building, a large lath passing through the ends of rafters, கைமரங்கோக்குஞ்சலாகை. ஏறுதுறை, s. A port, place of embarkation, exportation, &c., துறைமுகம். ஏறுநெற்றி, s. A high forehead (regarded as a fortunate mark in a man, but unlucky in a female--as calculated to cause an untimely death to her husband), also a mark of a masculine, imperious and irrascible temper, அகன்ற நெற்றி. ஏறுபடி, s. An extra batta or allowance above the stated proportion, to a servant, for expenditure in the temple, for an entertainment, &c., அதிகப்படி. ஏறுபெட்டி, s. [prov.] A toddydrawer's basket for carrying toddy, கள் ளேறுபெட்டி. ஏறுபொழுது, s. The sun as it rises toward the meridian. ஏறுமிராசி, s. The constellation in the sun's path from the equator to the northern solstitial point, உச்சத்திற்கேறு மிராசி. See இறங்குமிராசி. ஏறுவட்டம், s. The difference, less or more than sixty Indian hours, in the passage of the moon through any of the asterisms, also the difference in the கர ணம் and யோகம் as affected thereby, நட் சத்திரமுதலியனநாழிகையேறுமுறை. 2. In the division of the inheritance of lands, trades, &c., the excess above or the deficiency in equal shares, பங்கினளவுக்கதிகமா னநிலமுதலியன. ஏறுவால், s. The capacity to see and comprehend all things alike; omniscience, சமானகாட்சி. சமதளம், s. A plane, an even surface, a level floor, ஒத்ததரை. 2. An equal army, சரிசேனை. 3. (Rott.) A crowd, a multitude, சனதளம். சமதாளம், s. One of the nine kinds of musical measure. See தாளம். சமநிலை, s. Equilibrium, equipoise, medium, mean, நடுநிலை. 2. [in pros.] Poetry composed of words having a due mixture of hard, soft and medial letters, ஓரலங்காரம். சமநிலைவெண்பா, s. A stanza composed of two குறள்வெண்பா, without an extra connective foot in the middle, சவலைவெண்பா. சமநிறை, s. Equipoise, equilibrium. (c.) சமபந்தி, s. Medial soil or tract, that which is neither வன்பால் or மென் பால்; hence, maritime soil or district, நெய்தநிலம். 2. Forest soil or district முல்லைநிலம்; [ex பால், soil.] (திவா.) சமப்பட--சமமாக, inf. To be in, or become reduced to, an equilibrium--as the humours of the body or otherwise. 2. To become tranquil, even, level, &c. சமப்படுத்த, inf. To make even, to equalize, balance, poise, level, tranquillize, moderate. சமமானமனம், s. A composed mind, equanimity. (Little used.) சமமின்மை, s. Partiality, bias, want of mental equilibrium, நடுநிலையின்மை. 2. Inequality. சமமுகம், s. One of the fourteen expressions of the countenance, that of the head erect and fixed--as in contemplation, deep thought, &c., தியானிப் பதுபோற்றலையசைவின்மை. See முகம். சமம்பாவிக்க, inf. [loc.] To attempt a similar act, pursuit, &c--as a rival; to emulate, vie, எதிர்பாவிக்க. சமயுத்தம், s. An equal contest, an engagement in which neither party is victorious. சமரசம், s. Peace, tranquillity, சமா தானம்; [ex சமம், calm, et ரசம், state.] 2. Reconciliation, agreement, the act of reconciling opinions, views. &c., seemingly repugnant, சமாதானஞ்சொல்லல். 3. Equality, ஒப்பு. 4. (Rott.) Fellowship, familiarity, ஐக்கம். (c.) சமரசர், s. Companious, familiar friends. (R.) சமரதம், s. A royal car or chariot of war of the third order, that next above, அத்தரதம், and next below மாரதம். See இரதம். சமரதர், s. Warriors fighting in a சமரதம் car, defending themselves and the army equally. (பார.) சமரவி, s. [in astron.] The sun's true longitude at the middle of an eclipse, கிரகணமத்தியகாலத்துக்குச்சூரியபுடம். சமராத்திரம், s. Equinox, equal night. --Note. The word does not seem to mean the equinoctial points. (Modern.) சமரேகை, s. The equatorial circle or line, as சமசக்கரம். (Modern.) சமவிருஷ்டி--சமவிருட்டி, s. Moderate rain, மத்திபமழை; [ex விருஷ்டி, rain.] சமவிலை, s. A moderate price. சமவணி--சமவுவமை, s. [in rhet.] Similitude, simile, ஓரலங்காரம்.

One who sucks up the brain by stroking the head i. e. deceives and embezzles. தலைதடுமாற்றந்தந்துபுணர்ந்துரைத்தல், v. noun. Treating of subjects out of the usual order for some particular purpose, one of the தந்திரவுத்தி. தலைதடுமாற்றம், s. Confusion, derangement, disorder. தலைதட்ட, inf. To mix, to be amalgamated, கலங்க. (p.) தலைமயிர், s. Hair of the head. தலைமயிர்வாங்க, inf. To shave off the hair for the first time. தலைமறையவிருக்க, inf. To remain concealed. தலைமாடு, s. (Gen. தலைமாட்டின்.) The head of a bed, place for the head when a person is lying down. See கால்மாடு. தலைமாடுகால்மாடாகக்கிடக்கிறான். He lies with his head where his feet should be. தலைமாணாக்கர், s. She has bathed, --that is, had a monthly course. தலைமுழுக்கு, v. noun. Bathing with oil. 2. A woman's monthly courses, catamenia, மகளிர்சூதகம். தலைமுறி, s. [prov.] Piece of a fish, yam, &c., near the head. தலைமுறை, s. Generation, lineal descent. தலைமுறைகண்டவன். An ancestor. தலைமுறைதலைமுறையாக. From generation to generation. தலைமுறையில்லாததாழ்வு. Extinction of a generation or family. (R.) தலைமுறைப்பட்டவன். A person of an ancient and high family. தலைமுறையிலில்லாதவழக்கம். A custom unknown to one's ancestors. தலைமூட்டை, s. A load for the head. See தலைச்சுமை. தலைமூட்டைக்காரன், s. A porter. தலைமூர்ச்சனை, s. Trouble, vexation, தீராதகலக்கம். தலைமூளை,s. Brain in the head in distinction from the marrow in the bones. தலைமேற்கொள்ள, inf. To take on the head; i. e. to obey implicitly. 2. To express submission. 3. To reverence. தலைமோதிக்கொண்டுதிரிய, inf. To walk about beating the head from sorrow or despair. தலையசைக்க, inf. To nod the head in approval, or shake it in displeasure. தலயடி--தலையடிப்பு, v. noun. Trouble, vexation, annoyance. 2. The first threshing of corn, by beating the head of the sheaf against the ground. தலையடிக்க, inf. To be troubled with, to be the cause of trouble to one. தலையணை, s. Pillow, bolster, cushion. தலையலங்காரம், s. A head-dress. See தலைக்கோலம். (c.) தலையழிதல், v. noun. Being ruined, perishing--used in cursing. தலையவதாரம்பண்ண, inf. [prov.] To behead. The topmost part of the trunk of a tree, commonly of a palm as unfit for use. தலையாட்டம்--தலைநடுக்கம், v. noun. Shaking of the head from age, palsy, &c. தலையாயார், s. (plu.) Cheif persons, the eminent, பெரியோர். (நீதிநெறி.) தலையாய்ச்சல், v. noun. [prov.] The first process, time, &c., the front part. தலையாரி, s. Bailiff, peon, a village watchman, or any native officer to execute the commands of a Magistrate. அதிகாரிவீட்டிலே திருடித் தலையாரிவீட்டிலே வைத்தான். He stole from the headman and placed what he stole in the watchman's house. தலையாரிவசம்பண்ண, inf. To commit to the watchmen. தலையாறு, s. The source of a river. தலையான, adj. Principal, chief. தலையானவன், appel. n. A chief. தலையிட, v. a. inf. To engage in, to ventrue on, to undertake, to take on one's self, to meddle with, to intermeddle, to concern one's self in. அதிலேயேன்தலையிட்டுக்கொள்ளுகிறாய். Why do you interfere in that business? தலையிடி, s. (inf. தலையிடிக்க.) A throbbing headache. தலையிலெடுத்துவிட--தலையில்தூக்கி விட, inf. To assist another to take up a load. தலையிலெழுத, inf. To write one's destiny in his head; ascribed to Brahma. தலையிலேறப்பார்க்க, inf. To endeavor to lord over others, or to treat them with disrespect. தலையிறக்கம், v. noun. Hanging the head through grief, chagri &c. தலையீற்று, v. noun. The first calving, yeaning, &c. 2. The firstling of cattle. தலையீற்றுப்பசு--தலையீற்றுக்கடாரி, s. A cow that has calved but once. தலையுடைக்க, inf. To break the head; i. e. to rack the brains and take great trouble in calculations, intricate business, &c. எவ்வளவாய்த்தலையுடைத்துக்கொண்டாலுங்கே ட்கிறானில்லை. Loftiness. eminence, superiority, distinction. 5. Holding the head erect. தலையெடுப்பாய்ப்பேசாதே. Don't be arrogant in your remarks. தலையெடுப்பானகோபுரம். A lofty tower. தலையெழுத்து, s. Destiny, fate, as supposed to be written in the head by Brahma, according to the actions of previous births, தலைவிதி. 2. Signature to a bond or instrument, inserted at the beginning. 3. The heading or title of a book. 4. The first or capital letter in a writing. தலையேறுதண்டம், s. [prov.] Punishment above what one is able to bear. 2. (fig.) Excessive trouble or labour; compulsory service, அநியாயதண்டம். தலையைக்கொடுக்க--தலைகொடுக்க, inf. To step forward in one's behalf, in a case of exigency. 2. To expose one's self to danger for another. தலையைச்சுற்றியெறிய, inf. To detest utterly; to reject with disgust, disdain and scorn. தலையைநடுக்க, inf. To feel dizziness, sickness, slight intoxication--as from betel, tobacco, spirits, &c. தலையோடு, s. The skull. தலைவணங்க, inf. To do homage. 2. To fall or bend down--as corn in the field. See தலைமடங்க. தலைவரி, s. Poll-tax. 2. Heading. தலைவலி--தலைநோ, s. Headache. இதுதலைவலிதான். This is a task uselessly imposed. தலைவலியுங்காய்ச்சலுந் தனக்குவந்தாலல்லோதெ ரியும். [prov.] A basket cap, as தலைப்பட்டை. தலைவாழையிலை, s. The top leaf of a plantain tree. தலைவி, s. (mas. தலைவன்.) A lady, a mistress, a matron. 2. A wife, மனைவி. தலைவிதி, s. Fate written in the head. See தலையெழுத்து. தலைவிரிகோலம், s. Dishevelled locks of persons in a fright, in sorrow, &c. தலைவிரிச்சான், appel. n. One with matted hair, தலைமயிர்முடியாதவன். 2. A plant, சாரணை. 3. The plant செருப்படை. தலைவிரிச்சான்கூட்டம், s. A nickname given to the female sex, ஸ்திரீசனம். தலைவிரிச்சான் கூட்டந் தடியெடுத்தாலோட்டம். An effeminate mob is routed with a staff. தலைவிலை, s. The first or harvest price of grain, when it is plentiful, &c. தலைவிழுவான், appel. n. He (his head) will lie low--an expression of ill will. தலைவெட்ட, inf. To strike off the measure. 2. To behead, to decapitate. 3. (fig.) To do a treacherous act. தலைவெட்டுகிறவன். A villain. தலைவெட்டுங்காரியமோ. Is it a capital crime? தலைவெட்டு, v. noun. The first cutting. தலைவைக்க, inf. mutir (p. 357) --முதிரு, கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், முதிர, v. n. To grow old, to have the qualities of age [as stiffness in trees, weakness in men], முற்ற. 2. To become mature, to grow ripe, பழுக்க. 3. To exceed, to rise above mediocrity, to excel, surpass, become satiated, தேற. முதிர்ந்தகல்வி. Mature knowledge. முதிர்ந்திருக்கிறபெண். An unmarried woman of more than twenty-years of age. வயதினாற்கிழவனாகிலுஞ்செய்கையினாலின்னம்முதிர்ந் தவனல்ல. Though he is old in years, he is not discreet. (Beschi.) முதிரவேக, inf. To be much dried, at the fire. முதிராப்பிண்டம், s. An embryo; a f&oe;tus. முதிர்காற்று, s. A gale, strong wind, கடுங்காற்று. முதிர்ந்தசொல்--முதிர்ந்தபேச்சு, s. Language above one's age, habits, or knowledge. முதிர்ந்தபுத்தி, s. Mature understanding. வாலிபத்திலேமுதிர்ந்தபுத்திகுறுகினவயசடையாள மாம். Precocity is an index of short life. முதிர்ந்திட, inf. To become of age; to be old, as முதிர. முதிர்பிறை, s. The second quarter of the increasing moon, வளர்பிறை. முதிர்வேனில், s. Season of greatest heat. See பருவம். முதிர்ச்சி, v. noun. Great age, old age, being of long standing, grown, வயதின்மு துமை. 2. Excellence; being above mediocrity, [as in learning, practice or habils], தேறுகை. 3. Maturity, excess, முதிர்வு. 4. As முதிர்ந்தபேச்சு. 5. [prov.] Arrogance. முதிர்ச்சிக்காரன், s. An arrogant man. முதிர்பு--முதிர்மை--முதிர்வு, v. noun. Maturity, ripeness. 9)
